Where to Watch: Hulu

Genre: Political Thriller

Starring: Jun Ji Hyun and Kang Dong Won

The Story

A former ambassador uncovers a political plot that could launch the world into a nuclear war. And when an unknown mercenary offers her his protection, the pair are thrown into a world of dangerous enemies, buried secrets and political power that could cost them everything.

Meeting the stars: Jun Ji Hyun and Kang Dong Won

Jun Ji Hyun as Seo Mun Ju

Seo Mun Ju is a diplomat who has been living and working abroad until her husband calls her home to help in his bid for president. But when her husband is assassinated shortly after her return, Mun Ju meets San Ho. He is a mercenary who volunteers his services as Mun Ju’s personal bodyguard.

As Mun Ju begins to dig into her husbands activities before his death, she learns that a dangerous politcal game is afoot, and those closest to her may be much more heavily involved than she could have ever imagined. With the world on the brink of nuclear war, Mun Ju will try to stop the sale of a secret nuclear submarine and expose those who planned to betray their own country for personal profit.

Seo Mun Ju is strong and intelligent. She also has a strong sense of responsibility to the people of both North and South Korea. But she has put aside her own political aspirations to support her husband. Jun Ji Hyun is a great actress. I am more used to seeing her in lighter roles, so I really enjoyed watching in her in this stronger, more serious role. I loved her in this role and hope she does more dramas in this style in the future.

Kang Dong Won as Baek San Ho

Baek San Ho is a mercenary who was born in North Korea. After escaping that country, he wandered the world making money and gaining a reputation as a skilled fighter and soldier. When he is offered a job watching Mun Ju, he agrees to take it. But he is more concerned with protecting her than reporting her actions back to his boss.

After San Ho saves Mun Ju’s life twice, she begins to finally trust him. Together they begin working to solve the mystery of the secret nuclear submarine and the web of political deceit threatening the world. And as San Ho and Mun Ju fight for their lives side by side, their bond grows stronger.

Baek San Ho is quiet and brave. He has been a loner his whole life, but when he meets Mun Ju he feels a connection he has never had before. But in the end, he will have to sacrifice his own happiness to save Mun Ju and the state of the world.  I am not familiar with Kang Dong Won, so it was fun to discover a new actor. I loved him in this role. This strong, silent bodyguard character fit him perfectly.

Supporting characters

Park Hae Joon as Jang Jun Ik

Jang Jun Ik is Mun Ju’s husband. He is a politician who has just started campaigning to become president. But when he discovers sectrets and conspiracies within his own family, he will be suddenly killed to keep him for exposing anything.

Lee Mi Sook as Im Ok Seon

Kim Hae Sook as Chae Gyeong Sin

Chae Gyeong Sin is the acting President. She has been a close ally and mentor to Mun Ju. When news of Mun Ju’s actions start to hit the news, President Chae isn’t sure she can still trust Mun Ju. But as Mun Ju explains the truth behind everything that has happened, the President slowly begins to come around to Mun Ju’s side again.

3 Things I Loved About ‘Tempest’

1.

3 Passion:

The leads in this drama have an intense and passionate love affair. Although they are only together for a very short time, their fiery chemistry is palpable. Though some felt that the romance was forced and unrealistic, I believe that both of these characters had been incredibly lonely. It makes sense to me that they could both fall quickly and hard in that adrenaline filled situation. And the leads really carried that chemistry off the charts. I loved watching them together. Every touch and gaze felt emotionally loaded.

2.

Strong Women:

The men are definitely not the stars of this drama. The strong female roles were fantastically portrayed. From the female President to the heartless villain, these women dominate the screen. I loved seeing Jun Ji Hyun in this kind of role. As former ambassador, speaking for peace and unity in Korea, I felt her character was an inspiration. And this drama avoided the stereotype that a strong woman has to act like an angry harpy. Mun Ju is reasonable and well-spoken, while refusing to be overlooked any longer.

3.

Villain:

Chae Gyoeng Sin has played her share of villain type roles, but I loved the way the writers developed this character. She wasn’t just some angry woman with a questionable motive. She had the justification and the means to be believable as a global arms dealer, flying under the radar at social and politcal functions.

3 Things I Didn’t Love About ‘Tempest’

1.

Jun Ik:

Poor Jun Ik! After his assassination, we are lead to believe that he is North Korean spy and a cheater. His reputation is dragged through the mud and it’s had to feel much sympathy for his character. But as we find out more of the truth, we find that he was actually trying to expose the real spy, who just happened to be his own mother. And while he did have a short affair with Han Na, she was obviously intentionally seducing him and forcing him to stay with her. His life couldn’t have been easy before Mun Ju came home, and although I wouldn’t say he was a totally innocent victim, he was also not the creep he originally was painted as.

2.

Peaches:

The role of Mun Ju and Jun Ik’s lost child is pivotal in this drama. Not only does it explain the strange distance between them as a couple, it provides the final clue to the evidence Jun Ik hid before his death. But the details about what actually happened were extremely vague. What actually happened to this baby/child? I assume it was no one was fault, but just a tragic accident. But I feel like a few more specifics would have helped me understand them better as a couple, and given more insight into Mun Ju’s past pain.

3.

More John Cho:

It’s great that Disney is using their big budget to actually find talented English speaking Korean actors. John Cho was a great addition to this cast and I really wish we had gotten to see more of Anderson’s character. But including him in this cast was definitely a step in the right direction.

The Conclusion of 'Tempest'

The Ending

‘Tempest’ ties up loose ends with the villains and gives Mun Ju a personal happy ending, while leaving San Ho’s fate open-ended. Mun Ju sends San Ho to get information to the president that will justify arresting Director Yoo. But while he is away, Mun Ju is kidnapped by Ok Seon and being held on a ship. Ok Seon is ready to fire the nuclear missles. But, of course, once San Ho finishes up with the president, he shows up to save Mun Ju.

In the end, Ok Seon triggers the missle launch before shooting herself and falling into the water, taking the cancellation code with her. Luckily, Mun Ju is able to use her politcal connections to get help from the King of Idishia. But Ok Seon has also used a pressure trigger similar to the one from the train in episode 3.

San Ho sends Mun Ju to get help from the explosives team, knowing that she won’t be able to return. As they escort her off the ship, Mun Ju has one last phone conversation with San Ho. He promises he will continue to watch over her. Mun Ju and the rest of the men get into life boats and reach a safe distance before the explosion. But just before the ship ignites, we get one last ray of hope, as they show the control room where San Ho was working is empty and the door is open. So did he survive?

Later, we see Mun Ju serving as an ambassador for the US/Idishia peace talks, where she finally meets Anderson in person. Mun Ju continues to pray for San Ho’s safe return. We see a scene of San Ho wandering the desert, presumably the Gobi, where he buries Mun Ju’s necklace in the sand. Whether this is real or just a dream sequence is unclear, and unless there is a season 2, I guess that is up to you.

The final scene shows Mun Ju finally announcing her bid in the next presidential election. I really thought San Ho would be there, as always, at a distance, ready to protect her. But maybe this is the final proof that her polaris now watches her from Heaven. Still, I like to believe he is alive and waiting for her to finally find him.

My Personal Thoughts and Ratings

‘Tempest’ is an exciting political spy thriller. These kinds of espionage style dramas are much less common than most other genres, which always make them a fun watch. The story is complex and unpredicatable. Jun Ji Hyun is great as the gutsy and graceful diplomat. And the leads have a sizzling chemistry.

For some, the mix of thriller and romance may feel uneven with fans wishing they had chosen one or the other. These kinds of dramas that dive into the dark and elite world of the political arena can often feel unrealistic. The drama does lose a bit of momentum in the second half. But I enjoyed the strong female characters and complex political stories.  I give ‘Tempest’ an 9 out of 10 ramen.
