The Story
A young man enters the military as a nervous recruit, still reeling from the sudden death of his beloved father. When his superiors hear that his mother runs a food truck, they assign him to the unit kitchen. But when his enlistment triggers a "video game" that prepares him to become a legendary kitchen solider, complete with quests and special skills, he begins focusing on his culinary abilities. And slowly he finds himself improving and even enjoying his new role.
The Leads
Park Ji Hoon as Kang Seong Jae
Kang Seong Jae joins the military shortly after the death of his father. As soon as he arrives at his base in Ganglim, a video game prompt pops up in front of him saying "Welcome, Warrior". At first, he assumes the people in the room are talking to him, but he quickly realizes no one hears it but him and that they all assume he is hallucinating. When his superiors learn that his mother runs a food truck, they assign him to work in the kitchen. Little do they know that, although his father ran a restaurant all of his life, Seong Jae never learned to cook himself. But when he enters the kitchen, he begins getting quests that unlock recipes and cooking skills. And as Seong Jae begins working through the daily missions, he gains confidence, cooking skills, and the gratitude of the soldiers, who are finally getting decent meals.
But with his new skills and attention to details, Seong Jae begins to uncover a web of secrets that involve using poor quality food for the soldiers and lining the pockets of those in charge with the profit. When the higher-ups see that Seong Jae is getting close to uncovering their secrets, they move to close down Ganglim for good before they are caught. Now Seong Jae is in a rush against time, as he fights to keep his new home open.
Kang Seong Jae is feeling the weight of responsibility after the death of his father. He enlists in the army as a way to begin caring for his family. But along the way, he gains a sense of purpose and a confidence he had never had before. I love Park Ji Hoon! He just continues to grow as an actor and I find his sweet screen presence to be so charming. It was fun to see him in such a fun, light-hearted role.
Lee Hong Nae as Yun Dong Hyeon
Yun Dong Hyeon is the head cook at Ganglim Outpost. He is a terrible cook who is more concerned with his own workout routine and protein intake than trying to make anything edible for his fellow soldiers. He only has three months of service left, and he is counting the days until he can get back to his own life. And because of his strength, no one has the courage to complain, no matter how terrible the food gets. When Seong Jae first shows up in the kitchen, Dong Hyeon is just focused on hazing him, but as Seong Jae's kitchen skills begin to improve, Dong Hyeon slowly starts to like and respect him.
When Seong Jae begins to realize how poor the food quality is, he and Dong Hyeon work together to figure out what happened. And while Dong Hyeon really isn't a good cook, he is encouraged to learn that it isn't entirely his fault. No one could make delicious food with the horrible supplies they were delivered. And he becomes inspired to learn from Seong Jae and try to improve his own skills now that he has someone to teach him.
Yun Dong Hyeon developed a tough guy persona when he entered the military, mostly for his own preservation. But it doesn't take long for Seong Jae's contagious optimism to win him over. And as he softens with Seong Jae, the bonds of friendship with all of the other soldiers begins to deepen. While Lee Hong Nae debuted in 2011, this is his first starring role, and I really hope it won't be his last. He was endearing and he played this tough guy with a heart of gold perfectly.
Supporting Characters
Yoon Kyung Ho as Park Jae Yeong
Park Jae Yeong is a supply officer for Ganglim. He is a free spirit who tends to try to stay under the radar, which often leads to unfortunate mishaps. But he cares about his young soldiers and does his best to defend them and the base itself.
Han Dong Hee as Cho Ye Rin
Cho Ye Rin is the Post Commander. She is constantly disrespected and looked down upon by the patriarchal superior officers. She is sent to Ganglim because it is a secluded outpost that no one else wants to be in charge of. She suspects that something is going on behind the scenes at the outpost, and she begins her own investigation.
Lee Sang Yi as Hwang Seok Ho
Hwang Seok Ho is the Captain stationed at Ganglim. He is a bit of a bumbling leader, but his perseverance has helped him climb the ranks. He does everything he can to stay in favor with those who rank above him, but that often leaves him at odds with the other officers who serve under him.
Things I Like
Real Skill
Seong Jae's father hints early in the drama that eventually Seong Jae will have to let his skills speak for themselves without the benefit of the "game prompts". And I love that that is exactly what he does. Having Seong Jae temporarily lose the game gave him the opportunity to show all he had learned and gain some confidence along the way. What an appropriate way to finish this final mission.
Bromance Chemistry
The friendships in this drama are really the heart of it. With an almost entirely male cast, they were able to focus on all that sweet male bonding and bromance. I especially loved the kitchen trio, and I was so happy when Dong Hyeon and Gwan Cheol were able to set aside their differences and become friends again.
Cho Ye Rin
I was so glad the writers resisted the urge to give Ye Rin a romance line with one of the other officers. So often in this kind of drama, the only purpose they give the female character is to be a love interest. I even saw someone bragging online that was obviously what was going to happen. I'm so glad they were wrong! Instead, Ye Rin had her own path and story, and her female character brought just enough diversity into the show.
Things I Didn't Like
Military Food?
I have to say, I love a good "food porn" drama and getting to see Korean dishes prepared well is always interesting. BUT...some of these dishes felt pretty fancy for military mess hall food. And I don't care how high your rank is. I don't think you are going to get away with gourmet chefs and luxury food items.
Romance
I don't really know what the point of having a girlfriend for Seong Jae was. Even when he was home on leave, we hardly saw Min A at all. I mean their final scene together was cute, but I don't feel like her presence did anything for the story. Their brief scenes felt out of place with the rest of the drama.
Minor Character Questions
Probably because it is based on a webtoon, this drama seemed to have a lot of minor characters and plenty of unanswered questions. What eventually happened to the North Korean defector? Who was the tteokbokki restaurant owner? Was he really a former game player like Seong Jae? I was happy that Ye Rin's former mentor, Im Seong Bin, was cleared of wrong-doing, but I feel like that would have been more impactful if we knew a bit more of his story and what he went through. And most importantly, what exactly is the connection between the game, Ganglim, and Seong Jae's dad?? There were lots of hints but no real answers.
The Ending
I've seen varying accounts about the ending of this drama, so I rewatched the last bit through again pretty carefully. I think there is some confusion between the drama and the original webtoon. But what I can say is that our leads save the day and expose the villains. The kitchen trio perform well in their cooking contest, but the original contest ends in a tie. The judges call for a cook-off, one on one, which triggers the game to declare a loss, since he didn't complete his mission within the assigned time frame, and take Seong Jae's game skills. But after a slow and nervous start, Seong Jae draws on everything he has learned so far and ends up winning. And the time they bought Jae Yeong and Seok Ho allows them, with the help of a jailed Min Gu, to gather the evidence from Colonel Baek's office. With that, Colonel Baek and his minions are exposed and arrested and Im Seong Bin's name is cleared.
And now that Seong Jae is center-stage, he takes the opportunity to plea their case with Major General Kim, and is able to save Ganglim. And that mean Seong Jae wins his quest! By the time the trio and their superiors make it back to Ganglim, everyone is there and waiting with a hero's welcome. Later we see everyone throwing a goodbye party for Dong Hyeon, who is finally being discharged. And Seong Jae is interviewed by Min A about his cooking victory. The last scene gives us a voiceover from Seong Jae as he stands in his kitchen talking about the gift cooking can be, especially to those struggling and away from home.
Should I Watch
'The Legend of Kitchen Soldier' is an action comedy based on a webtoon. I really enjoyed this quirky, out-of-the-box drama. It's silly without being irritating, the adventures in food give us some delicious looking dishes, and the character relationships are touching and fun. I found myself laughing along with the squad's crazy antics, and yet also appreciating some of the more heartwarming messages about friendship and family.
But this is definitely campy webtoon humor with a glaring lack of romance. So don't go in expecting a sweet rom-com style storyline. It's over-the-top silly, bordering on ridiculous for the majority of the show.There's your usual incompetent and power-hungry villains that seem pretty obvious from the start. But if you want a light comedy with some endearing characters and plenty of laughter, I highly recommend this one. I give 'The Legend of Kitchen Soldier' a 5 out of 5 ramen.
