The Story

In a fantasy world where Korea is still ruled by the monarchy, a handsome grand prince faces pressures from his step-mother to settle down and fade from the public eye. Desperate to control the situation in his own way, the Prince proposes a contractual marriage to a famous heiress, who is the illegitimate daughter of the Chairman of Castle Group. But the proposal is met with resistance on all sides. And as they face both social pressure and the very real threat of physical danger, the pair find their carefully constructed contract feeling more like a real-life romance.

The Leads

IU as Seong Hui Ju

Seong Hui Ju is the illegitimate daughter of Seong Hyeon Guk, the Chairman of Castle Group. She was born to his mistress and then left at her father's house at a young age. Hui Ju's arrival causes Hyeon Guk's wife so much stress that she dies that same day, causing Hyeon Guk to resent Hui Ju. She has spent her whole life competing with her older brother, Tae Ju for their father's love and approval. And although she has all the money and career success she could ever want, the one thing she has always lacked as an illegitimate child is status.

So, when Hui Ju crashes a gala at the royal palace and runs into Yi An while roaming the dark corridors of the palace, she hatches a plan to marry him with a three year contract. Once they have both secured what they need, they can divorce and go on with their separate lives. It takes some convincing, but he eventually agrees. But as she gets to know Yi An, she will come to realize that they share very similar wounds from their past hurts. And the more she comes to understand him, the less their marriage feels like a fake.

Hui Ju is ambitious and composed. To many, she seems stubborn and unyielding. But that sharp exterior hides her more intimate feelings of insecurity and resentment. She had to become self-reliant at a young age and until she married Yi An, she never had anyone she could really trust. I always love IU. This confident, slightly impish character reminded me of her performance in 'Hotel del Luna', and I enjoyed it. It's nice to see her get to play a more cheerful character once in a while.

Byeon Woo Seok as Grand Prince Yi An

Grand Prince Yi An is the younger brother of the late King. He lives in the royal palace with his sister-in-law, the Queen Dowager and his 8 year old nephew, King Yi Yun . As the Grand Prince, he lives with all the restrictions of being a part of the royal family with none of the power. But the Queen Dowager still worries that his popularity and age make him a constant challenge to her son's position. She encourages him to get married in order to move him out of the limelight.

After a chance encounter with the heiress at a royal gala, Hui Ju offers the prince a contractual marriage for 3 years. Yi An will be able to avoid being forced into a marriage with a woman he doesn't love and Hui Ju will receive the status and prestige she craves. After some feigned resistance, he signs the contract. But Yi An's choice of wives is not as random as it first seems. And as they face opposition and public scrutiny, Yi An will stick close to Hui Ju's side, hoping maybe she will choose to make their marriage a real one.

Yi An suffered severe trauma as a young person. From his abusive father to the loss of his brother, he carries the scars of pain and helplessness. And as he tries to be the shield that protects his nephew from a similar pain, he becomes convinced that abolishing the monarchy will be the best for everyone, including the citizens of Korea. This stoic and rigid role is quite the departure from Byeon Woo Seok's much more emotional character in 'Lovely Runner'. While many fans criticized him for his portrayal of Yi An as still and awkward, I found his nuanced expressions and subtle character development perfectly fitting for the role.

Supporting Characters

Steve Noh as Prime Minister Min Jeaong U

Min Jeong U is the handsome Prime Minister of Korea. He has had a crush on Hui Ju since they were all students at the Royal Academy. He has been Yi An's confidante and political partner. But when Yi An tells Jeong U he intends to marry Hui Ju, their relationship becomes strained. And when Yi An moves to abolish the monarchy, Jeong U gathers support to oppose him.

Gong Seung Yeon as Yun I Rang

Yun I Rang is the Queen Dowager. She was married to Yi An's older brother, the late King. She rules the palace with a fierce demand for decorum and royal tradition. She is the mother of Yi Yun, the young King. She and her father, Yun Seong Won, both push Yi Yun because they are greedy for the power he will yeild.

Yoo Soo Bin as Choi Hyeon

Choi Hyeon is Yi An's private aid. As a very young boy, Hyeon was abandoned by his mother and left at the palace. He and Yi An grew up together. Now he serves Yi An with absolute devotion and a fair amount of "sibling" bickering and grumbling. He falls in love with Hui Ju's secretary, Hye Jeong, which gives us a fun secondary romance.

Things I Like

Hui Ju's Emotional Growth

Throughout this drama, Hui Ju is shown as impulsive and lacking of empathy. From a young age, she is rebellious and unconcerned with anyone else's feelings. But as her relationship with Yi An deepens, we begin to see a softer side to her. This is best seen when Hui Ju first learns the truth about Jeong U and I Rang. Instead of exposing the truth callously and breaking Yi An's heart, she feels Yi An out for his thoughts and then waits to find out for sure. I think this shows a more mature and emotionally aware Hui Ju.

Queen's Redemption

For Yi Yun's sake, I was happy to see I Rang realize the error of her ways and the dangerous attitude of her father. I think she always suspected her father was much more evil than she actually knew, but she purposefully looked the other way and didn't dig too deep. But as everything is revealed, she makes the right choice, and that saves not only her relationship with her son but also with Yi An. Although I'm not sure I can forgive her for killing Yi Hwan!

Secretaries

The secretaries in this drama are both fun characters, and all the more fun because they seem like such an unlikely couple. Yoo Soo Bin had great chemistry with all of the cast, and I always looked forward to his scenes. I especially loved his bromance with Yi An and of course the budding romance with Hye Jeong.

Things I Didn't Like

Jeong U as Villain

From the beginning, Jeong U is down bad for Hui Ju. We see him acting jealous of Yi An right away, even though Jeong U has never even worked up the nerve to find out whether Hui Ju actually likes him. This fits the story and I can work with it. But if feels like a big stretch from unrequited lover to attempted murderer. It would have been easier to just stick to Seong Won as the villain we already know him to be, and leave Jeong U as the brokenhearted friend.

Family Development

There are a lot of interesting questions that are brought up in this drama and never addressed, particularly in regard to some of the secondary family members. Like what exactly happened to Yi An's older brother in the first place to make him want to abdicate the throne? Did Hui Ju's mom really just disappear, never to be heard from again? Did Yi An ever return I Rang's romantic feelings for him, before or after she married Yi Hwan? And maybe most importantly, was the fire that killed Yi Hwan set intentionally by I Rang or was it just a tragic accident?

 Cultural/Historical Criticism

Just a quick note on all the cultural/historical controversy surrounding this drama. I will admit, I didn't do much research into the specifics of these complaints. Something about Chinese tea service techniques and the wrong number of beads on the King's headpiece. For me, it comes down to this. This drama is fiction. Who knows how the royal headpiece may have evolved if the monarchy had continued. But this premise is fantasy from beginning to end. This never happened, and they should be allowed to imagine the scenario in any way they choose. Call me short-sighted, but I just don't think these things detract from the romantic fairytale they created.

The Ending

'Perfect Crown' gives us a happy ending for all our couples and some redemption for I Rang. Yi An convinces Yi Yun to abdicate the throne and give it to him, so Yi An can protect his nephew. At first, I Rang is furious, but as the truth about her father's crimes are uncovered and she finds out that Yi Yun heard her fight with his father the night Yi Hwan died, she realizes she also needs to protect her son. Seong Won and Jeong U are both arrested for their treasonous attacks on Yi An. And with their crimes revealed, Yu An, as the new King, presents the idea of abolishing the monarchy all together. It isn't an easy battle, but Yi An is persuasive and they win the national vote. Yi An and Hui Ju agree to stay married and live as commoners. And, in a sweet moment, Hui Ju calls Yi An by his given name, Lee Wan, for the first time.

Three years later, we find Hui Ju coming back to Castle Group to step in for her brother, who is taking paternity leave to help his pregnant wife. Hyeon and Hye Jeong are married and expecting their first child together. And Yi An pays a visit to I Rang, who now runs her own flower store. She and Yi Yun are doing well and enjoying the freedom of being commoners. The final scene takes us back to the baseball stadium, but this time Yi An is wearing his matching baseball jersey, and when the kiss-cam finds them again, he willingly participates!

Should I Watch

'Perfect Crown' is part fantasy fairytale and part romantic comedy. The drama is at its strongest when we are watching the bond between the leads grow over time. The glossy cinematography and stunning costumes bring the fairytale element alive perfectly. The dialogue and interactions between the leads are witty and sometimes refreshingly blunt. No royal drama is complete without a fun cast of palace servants and a fair bit of intrigue and conspiracy, and this one gave us just that.

But when all is said and done, this drama is all about the romance. If you are looking for well-developed secondary characters, plausible plot lines, and tight storytelling, you are likely to be disappointed. The ending leaves us with plenty of unanswered questions and cultural inaccuracies left history fans irate. But if you like dreamy fairytales and swoon-worthy love stories, I definitely recommend this one.  I give 'Perfect Crown' a 4 out of 5 ramen.
