Unspoiled Series Overview

'Love Scout'

A driven CEO of a headhunting agency has guided her small company to success. But her workaholic personality has a price.  She is chaotically disorganized, suffers chronic insomnia, and is often difficult to get along with on a personal level.  Which is why every secretary she has ever hired has quit.  But when her office manager and only real friend hires an efficient, well-tempered single dad as her newest secretary, everyone hopes for the best.  And although the CEO bristles in the beginning, he is determined to win her over with his thoughtful skills of office and personal management skills.

'Love Scout' is a Sweet, Slow-Burn Romance About a CEO and Her Secretary

My Thoughts on 'Love Scout'

Learning the Finer Points of Work/Life Balance

'Love Scout' is a slow-burn office romance drama.  Ths drama does a nice job of flipping the gender stereotypes by showing the struggle between work and raising a child from the side of a single father, while the woman is the workaholic CEO.  The mature romance steers away from unnecessary relationship drama and shallow miscommunication to give us a realistic love story with just enough real life bumps to keep the plot going.  The drama has a warm, comforting quality that feels like a pleasant cup of tea.

Let me repeat, this is a slow-burn.  The pacing feels inconsistent, with some definite drag in parts.  The plot is a bit predictable and the villains are one-dimensional and not well developed.  For an office romance, the business scenes feel strangely watered down and irrelevant.  These things may frustrate certain audiences, but I really did enjoy this drama and it's efforts to teach work/life balance and healing.  I give 'Love Scout' an 8 out of 10.

General Information

What You Need to Know About About 'Iron Family'

This family weekend drama originally appeared on KBS2 . It was directed by Sung Joon Hae, who also directed other popular dramas such as the 2022 drama 'Bravo My Life' and the 2020 drama 'No Matter What'.

Air Date:  September 28, 2024 - January 26, 2025

Episodes: 36

Where to Watch: Viki

Genre: Family Rom-Com

Starring: Kim Jung Hyun and Geum Sae Rok

Plot Summary

For the Love of Money

A 3 generational family owns and runs a neighborhood dry cleaners.  Though their business is well established and respected, money has always been tight.  And when they find out that the youngest daughter requires an expensive medical procedure to keep her eyesight, they become desperate to find a way to pay for it.

So when the grandparents stumbled upon a bag of money buried on the mountainside, they can't help being tempted to steal it.  Hiding the money under their bed, they resolve to only spend the money when necessary.  But as the local police dig deeper into the missing money, each family member will be forced to make difficult choices revolving around family and money.

Personal Reflection

My Personal Thoughts and Rating

'Iron Family' is a shortened form of the traditional weekend family drama.  At 36 episodes, the pace is better than many other family dramas while still following a whole family of characters.  The multi-generational cast is well-utilized to give a wide range of stories and characters.  The plot is silly and ridiculous, but the cast make it so fun.

For some, a 36 episode drama is still too much of a commitment.  This drama is obviously not for them.  It's also not really realistic or serious, if that is what you are looking for.  All the talk about money sometimes overshadows the actually characters, which can be disappointing at times.  But I thought the cast and story were fun and as a fan of the weekend dramas, I loved the 36 episode format.  I give "Iron Family' an 8 out of 10 ramen.

Plot Summary for 'Mr. Plankton'

A Tale of Self Discovery and Healing

A fatally ill young man goes on a final adventure to find his biological father.  And when he accidentally finds out that his ex is also going through her own struggles, he decides to "kidnap" her and take her along for the ride.  But with her fiance on their trail, they will have to think fast and keep moving.  And along the way, they will both dig deep to discover what true happiness actually means and how to live their lives to the fullest, even in the face of impending tragedy.

My Thoughts on 'Mr. Plankton'

My Personal Insights and Rating

'Mr. Plankton' almost defies categorization.  It is a romantic drama with a healthy dose of dark comedy.  It is chaotically funny, while at the same time, tragically deep and thought provoking.  The cast is fabulous and the story will run you through all the feels.

But this drama is not your average kdrama, and it is definitely not a rom-com.  Fans who go in expecting a quick, breezy love story will be surprised by the heavy themes and achingly honest character portrayals.  But if you are willing to ride this emotional rollercoaster, I think you will find this tearjerker worthwhile and even fun at times.  I give 'Mr. Plankton' a 9 out of 10 ramen.

A Safe Peek at What Comes After Love 2024

Story Summary of 'What Comes After Love'

The Cultural Gulf

A young Korean student follows her dreams by moving to Japan to go to university.  And while she is there, she meets and falls in love with a Japanese writing student.  But their busy lives and cultural difference tear their relationship apart and she returns to Korea brokenhearted.  5 years later, she is shocked when she goes to the airport as a translator for a Japanese author promoting his book and comes face to face with her first love.  And he isn't in Korea by coincidence.  But while he hopes to mend the scars of their past, she isn't sure she is willing to open her heart to him again.

Personal Reflection and Rating of 'what comes after love'

A Second Chance at True Love

My Impressions

'What Comes After Love' is a slow-paced romantic drama in a bite-sized 6 episode format.  The themes of cultural isolation and loneliness are poignant and realistic.  The emotional melodrama beautifully uses cultural differences and the miscommunication of young love to show the character's journey.  The leads are fabulous and their quiet, smoldering chemistry is undeniable.

But don't let the low episode count fool you.  This is not a short, breezy rom-com.  It is definitely slow moving and character driven.  The tone is muted and introspective.  And while there are a few supporting characters, there isn't much time for side plots.  Some fans may feel the unhurried storytelling drags at times, but I fell in love with these precious characters and their painful story.   I give 'What Comes After Love' an 8 out of 10.

Plot Summary for 'Brewing Love'

A Tale of Understanding and Healing

My Thoughts on 'Brewing Love'

My Personal Insights and Rating

'Brewing Love' is a feel-good romantic comedy about empathy and healing. This drama was a bit uneven, in my opinion. Although the story was rough at times, I loved these characters and the interesting perspective on the "gift" of empathy.  The secondary characters are a nice addition and the quirky local residents bring some silly comedy antics.

For me, the plot and dialogue often felt clumsy and unnatural.  And that made it hard to settle in and fully enjoy the story they were trying to tell, which was disappointing because the characters made me really want to like it more.    But if you are looking for a breezy rom-com with a positive message and likable characters, this one could be just the thing.  I give 'Brewing Love' an 7 out of 10 ramen.

Chae Yong Ju & Yun Min Ju

Exploring the Leads in 'Brewing Love'

Chae Yong Ju

Kim Se Jeong as Chae Yong Ju

A Comprehensive Look at Brewing Love 2024

Chae Yong Ju's Story

Chae Yong Ju served in the military as a special forces soldier before settling down to support her ailing grandmother while working for the alcohol distribution company Jisang Liquor.  She has worked hard to establish her reputation as a star employee and team manager.  So she and her co-workers are devastated to learn that the main office intends to close their small branch for good. But there is still hope.  Yong Ju is promised that if she can manage to recruit the small town brew master responsible for creating Naro Beer to their company, they will let her keep her branch open.

Unfortunately, a trip to the countryside shows her that this will not be an easy assignment.  The quiet, introvert crafter is not at all interested in her offer or the fame their big name company could give him.  But Yong Ju is never one to give up easily.  And as the unlikely pair begin working together, they find that they have more in common than they may have initially thought.

Chae Yong Ju's Character

Chae Yong Ju is cheerful and optimistic.  She is known for her fierce loyalty to her company and her determined attitude toward her job.  But under the surface, she hides the scars of guilt for letting down the person in her life who means the most to her; her grandmother, who raised her. When she meets Min Ju, she begins to understand that she needs to forgive herself if she is ever going to be happy.  And slowly she begins to take the important steps of understanding and loving herself as much as she does others.

I feel like Kim Se Jeong plays these overly cheerful, optimistic roles well.  She has a killer smile and a magnetic personality that can light up the screen.  She was a perfect fit in this role, and while the writing may have been weak in spots, her acting was spot on.

Yun Min Ju

Lee Jong Won as Yun Min Ju

A Comprehensive Look at Brewing Love 2024

Yun Min Ju's Story

After going abroad to study in Germany, Yun Min Ju left behind the high stress of his family to open a brewery in a small town in the middle of nowhere.  His inspiration brought stability and jobs to the tight-knit community.  And eventually the product they worked together to create also brings them some recognition.

Min Ju is less than pleased when Yong Ju shows up to disturb his peaceful life with promises of fame and fortune, both of which he has no interest in. But the more he gets to know her, the more he trusts her to promote their beer without disturbing the quiet balance he has created in his life.  And he soon learns that they share a fated connection from their past that makes him feel even closer to her.  But pressure from her boss to prioritize profit over quality will challenge their budding relationship and any future they hope to share.

Min Ju's Character

Yun Min Ju was a sentsitive child with an overbearing father who is a decorated military leader.  Min Ju's ability to feel the emotions of those around him is something his father can never understand.  And the weight of those feelings and the strained family relationships are a constant source of pain for Min Ju.  But when he gets to know Yong Ju, she shows him a different side of his father and helps Min Ju learn to balance his empathy with a deeper understanding of himself and his own emotions.

Secondary Characters

Exploring the Supporting Cast

Shin Do Hyun as Bang A Reum

Bang A Reum works out of the main office of Jisang Liquor as the manager of the planning team.  In the beginning, A Reum sees Yong Ju as her competition and works with her boss to sabotage Yong Ju's teams' efforts.  But slowly, she begins to see that they can all work as a team with a common goal.  A Reum also falls for Yong Ju's old friend Chan Hwi, but she has a hard time letting go of her long-term plans to marry a wealthy, successful husband.

A Comprehensive Look at Brewing Love 2024

Highlights and critiques

Strengths and Weaknesses

What I Loved About the Drama

Quick Resolutions

I liked the drama-free, mature way this drama approached the lead's relationship. They get together and then stay even and strong through the whole rest of the show, which is rare. For example, rather than have a long, drawn-out break-up, they wisely decide to take a pause until they are ready to deal with their differences.  Sometimes less "drama" makes a better drama!

Faces of Healing

I appreciated the way this drama weaved the theme of healing through all of its characters, instead of only including the leads.  From business relationships, to family, to guilt, many of the characters embarked on their own journeys to weed out the thorns in their hearts and move past the old scars.

View of Empathy

Too often empathy is viewed as having the same meaning as sympathy.  So I loved that this drama set out to present a unique perspective on what real empathy is, giving an interesting visual image of how it might feel and the double-edged sword it can be. And while it may seem like a great "superpower", it does come at a price.

What I Didn't Love About the Drama

Chan Hwi's Reunion

I really wanted to see a bit more about Chan Hwi's reunion with his lovely family and the their meeting A Reum.  Especially since we met them earlier in the drama, it would have been nice if they had brought the characters back so that we could enjoy their warm family vibe again.  It just felt like a waste to not revisit them in their time of healing,

Planning Director

The whole Yeom Jang Goon character didn't really work for me.  I couldn't understand his motivation. Somehow it seems like if you are trying to prove you are indispensible to the company, causing a financial crisis is a step in the wrong direction.  And honestly, even if I did understand, I didn't care about the character or his whole belated back story.

More Romance, Less Business

At points this drama seemed to bog down with the business side of things.  I mean, I doubt there are many fans who were there to learn how to make beer.  Boring team meetings and clandestine alliances weren't all that interesting.  That time could have been better spent fleshing out some of the more engaging side stories.

Conclusion of 'Brewing Love'

Unraveling the Ending

'Brewing Love' closes up its storyline with happy endings for most of our characters.  Yong Ju and Min Ju create a product they can be proud of and end their short relationship hiatus.  And with that, the Busan branch is saved from closure.  Beom returns and is given a promotion for all his hard work.  Ra Oh gets a new trainee who is almost as annoying as he was in the beginning.  And the evil Marketing Director is exposed and fired.

As for our two couples, Chan Hwi and A Reum finally get permission to marry and Chan Hwi takes her to his house to meet his family.  Min Ju and his father reconcile and his father begins to take more of an interest in all of his family members.  And after much soul searching, Yong Ju decides to leave the company and start her own beer house.  Of course, she and Min Ju are still going strong as they support each other on their continued journey of healing.

Personal Thoughts

My Review and Rating

I give 'Brewing Love' a 7 out of 10 ramen.

Personal Reflection

My Personal Thoughts and Rating

'Family By Choice' is a sweet romantic drama about love, friendship, and the bond of family.  Let me start by saying that I did not see the original Chinese version of this drama, which many fans seemed to prefer.  But I really loved this drama a lot.  It was funny, heart-warming, and well-told.  The chemistry with all of the cast was great, and while the romances were sweet, I loved it that all the other relationships were given equal screen time and weight.

This drama does take its time, focusing more on character development and emotional depth than action.  Some complained that it felt too slow.  This is not a breezy light rom-com.  The topics of parental neglect and deep emotional scars are central to the characters and their personal growth.  And you may find yourself crying right along with them.  But I loved these characters and the precious relationships they developed.   I give "Family By Choice' a 9 out of 10 ramen.

Story Summary

Plot Overview

A young woman leaves behind a successful job and a prestigious fiance and returns home to Korea after years of living in the United States.  But she is surprised to find that in the time that she has been gone, very little has changed.  Including the constant presence of her neighbor and childhood friend, who is now a handsome and talented architect with an office right in their old neighborhood.

And as she struggles to get a fresh start, despite the pressure from her family to go back to the U.S., she will find herself turning to her old friend for support and encouragement.  But his feelings for her have always gone deeper than the platonic friendship they share, and he soon realizes this may be his first and last chance to finally win her heart.

Personal Insights

My Thoughts on 'Love Next Door'

'Love Next Door' is a Netflix slice of life drama about two childhood friends who are reunited after 10 years of being apart.  The leads have great chemistry and verbal rapport and the secondary characters are well-developed.  The family dynamics give the drama heart without limiting the focus to entirely romantic, and the secondary couple is adorable.

But this drama is not the light-hearted rom-com that it might look like at first glance.  This one is a slow-burn romance, for those that enjoy an emotional rollercoaster.  The angst can be a bit heavy-handed and the characters feel kind of irrational and immature at times.  But these leads are two of my favorites and I enjoyed the touching journey.  I give 'Love Next Door' a 8 out of 10 ramen.

But things veer from her plan when her "husband" suddenly shows up as an intern at her office.  And as they are  forced to continue their marriage charade, they find themselves becoming much closer.  But a secret from his past threatens to split them apart.

Personal Reflection

My Personal Thoughts and Rating

'No Gain, No Love' is a light-hearted rom-com with plenty of fun humor.  At 12 episodes, the story never has time to get dull and there is enough emotional depth to keep it on track.   I find Shin Min Ah enchanting in everything she does, and this drama did not disappoint.  And I have to give a special shout-out to any second-lead couple who is so popular with fans, they decide to give them their own 2 episode "mini-drama".

I feel like I'm saying this a lot these days, but this drama does have a 12 year age gap between its leads.  I also felt like a couple of the side stories fizzled out disappointingly and the ending seemed a bit rushed.    But it is a nice, breezy watch with some nice, touching moments. I give "No Gain, No Love' an 8 out of 10 ramen.
