Personal Reflection and Rating

A Beautiful Love Story

My Impressions

'My Demon' is a fantasy romance with an interesting premise.  The theme focuses on the role of evil in humanity and  facing the consequences of our choices.  This drama has some light-hearted humor to keep it from getting too dark.  The camera work is gorgeous and Song Kang is charming as the arrogant Demon.

Unfortunately, the mythology they created for the story leaves the drama riddled with plot holes.  And while Song Kang and Kim You Jung are beautiful people, there is far too much time spent on overly long close-ups instead of story telling.  With the exception of a few, the side characters were one-dimensional and annoyingly over-the-top.   I give 'My Demon' a 7 out of 10.

Story Summary

'My Demon' : A Romantic Journey

A 200 year old demon keeps eternal life by making contracts for the souls of desperate humans.  Contracted by God, his powers are channeled through a cross tattoo on the inside of his wrist.  One night, he finds himself trying to save a beautiful, young stranger.  And in the process, his tattoo is mysteriously transferred to her. “Fake things are always sweeter. Salvation, love, happiness, and whatnot. Sweet things are bad for you. Do you know what’s the worst of all? Happiness. Humans end up unhappy because they try to be happy.” – Do Do Hee

Main Characters - Do Do Hee and Jung Koo Won

Lead Characters

Kim You Jung as Do Do Hee

Do Do Hee was 10 years old when her parents were killed in a car accident.  She was adopted by the Chairwoman of Mirae Group.  While her adopted "grandmother" seems to dote on her, she is seen as an outcast and threat by the rest of the family.  And when her grandmother is found dead, she suddenly finds her very life in danger from jealous enemies on all sides.

But one night, while running from a crazy killer, she is saved by a mysterious man.  And she is perplexed to find his tattoo somehow now on her wrist.  Determined to find a way to get his tattoo back, he vows to stick to her side.  And with her current family issues, she welcomes him as a body guard and eventually a husband.  But as their feelings for each other grow, they will discover a connection from their pasts that may threatens to split them apart.

Do Do Hee is independent and cynical.  She has no intention of falling in love with anyone.  In fact, she doesn't believe in love at all.  But Koo Won is able to get through her defenses and show her that true love really does exist.  I love Kim You Jung as an actress, and her long list of roles speaks for itself, but I didn't love her in this role.  The few times she got to show some sincere emotion were fine, but they were few and far between.  In my opinion, this character just wasn't complex enough to really let her shine.

A Comprehensive Look at My Demon 2023

Song Kang as Jung Koo Won

In his current life, Jung Koo Won is the owner of Sunwol Foundation; a company that promotes traditional Korean art.  But 200 years ago, we he a spoiled nobleman from a wealthy family.  After the tragic death of his girlfriend, he curses god and is employed by her to become the Devil.  He bears the mark of his position as a cross tattoo on the inside of his wrist.  His job is simple.  He roams the earth to find desperate people who are willing to trade their souls for 10 years of their greatest desire.

But one night, in a deal gone wrong, he ends up saving the life of a beautiful strangers named Do Hee.  And in some strange twist of fate, she ends up with his tattoo on her wrist.  Without the source of his power, he finds his supernatural capabilities slowly fading away.  The only way to "recharge" them is for him to hold onto Do Hee's wrist.

Now all he can do is stay at her side and protect her and his tattoo.  But that is no easy task because Do Hee's family seems set on causing her serious harm.  And the more she relies on him to keep her safe, the more he begins to feel his human emotions resurfacing; particularly love.

Jung Koo Won is arrogant and uninterested in the insignificant lives of humans.  However, when he meets Do Hee, he begins to feel all of that changing.  But he still has a job to do.  And he begins to worry that the kind of casual indifference required by his job might be too difficult for Do Hee to accept.  Song Kang is charming, as always, in this role.  He was at his best when he was showing his arrogant sarcasm.  But again, I feel like his talent is definitely bigger than this role.  He was fine in it, but he has much more to offer.

A Comprehensive Look at My Demon 2023

Secondary Characters

Key Supporting Roles

Lee Sang Yi as Joo Seok Hoon

Joo Seok Hoon is one of the Chairwoman's grandsons.  Seok Hoon is the CEO of Mirae Investment.  He and Do Hee are about the same age and have always been close.  Seok Hoon has romantic feelings for Do Hee, but she thinks of him more as a friend and ally.  Seok Hoon helps Do Hee and Koo Won fight the family and take charge of Mirae Group after the Chairwoman's death.  In the end, it is Seok Hoon who takes over the "Chairperson" job.

A Comprehensive Look at My Demon 2023

Kim Tae Hoon as Noh Suk Min

Noh Suk Min is the son of Mirae Group.  As the oldest son, he fully expects to inherit the company when his mother dies.  And he has plenty of allies in the company willing to help him.  So Suk Min is shocked and irate to hear that his mother left everything to Do Hee. Suk Min is abusive to his wife and daughter and not afraid to do whatever it takes to get what he wants.  But although he tries to get rid of Do Hee, Koo Won is determined to protect her from him.

A Comprehensive Look at My Demon 2023

Heo Jung Do as Park Bok Kyu

Park Bok Kyu is a director at Sunwol Foundation and Koo Won's right hand at the company.  He actually met Koo Won in his past life, where he made a deal with him.  But in this life, he prefers to work for his own success.  He falls in love with Do Hee's secretary, Shin Da Jeong, and the couple secretly start seeing each other.

Highlights

Three Things I Loved About 'My Demon'

Clock Imagery

I loved everything about the way this drama used clocks to demonstrate chance and their view of life and the universe.  Not only was the idea well used, but visually it was beautiful to look at.  Whether Koo Won was in his private tower of clocks or hanging out high above the city on the giant public clock, it provided a stricking and poignant backdrop.

God Concept

I loved Cha Chung Hwa as the homeless god character with a love of gambling and seedy clubs.  It was a unique take that served them well, in my opinion.  Her constant reminder that in this mythology, god is as much at the whims of fate and destiny as the humans she oversees, fit well with the general theme of the drama.

Not Villains

This drama did a nice job of presenting several "villains" that ended up being much better than that.  The obvious example is Seok Hoon, who I was so sure was up to no good.  But even the poor Seung Ho went from a diabolical villain to pitiful victim.  It made both these characters so much more interesting than they would have been as just another layer of villain.

critiques

Three Things I Didn't Love About 'My Demon'

1."Rebirth":

While I felt like Koo Won's return from the dead was unexplained and a bit frustrating, I also felt like it was the perfect way to give him a new future.  Whether his punishment had been to become a guardian and savior to the humans he is supposed to hate or just a human who gets to live out his natural life with his wife, it seemed like there should be some change or point to having it happen.

2. Empty Moments:

I think if you took out all the endless longing stares and dead screen time in this drama, it would barely qualify for 12 episodes.  I mean, I know that Song Kang has become known for his hot on-screen chemistry, but this one was over the top, in my opinion.  I would have preferred if they had either shortened the series length or used the time to develop stronger side stories.

3.  So Many Questions:

I couldn't possibly address all the questions this drama left me with in this small space.  But it really seemed like this drama created their own mythology and then just did whatever they wanted and pretended it all made sense.  My most burning questions revolve around Koo Won's inconsistencies.  Why did someone who hates humans give Bok Kyu a second chance?  Does the deal only involve a limited stay in Hell and not eternity?

Also, why did Do Hee suddenly just decide that it was all okay that her husband took people's lives, including her own parents.  Of course, I assumed she would eventually accept it.  But shouldn't she have wrestled with it all first?  How did Koo Won come back and where was he while he was gone?  How and why did the tattoo transfer in the first place?  The list goes on, I'm just saying...

The Conclusion of 'my demon'

Drama Ending Explained

This ending was a little rushed, but we do get a happy ever after for our leads.  Suk Min is finally caught and his wife helps expose him.  Nice job, Se Ra!  He goes to prison and gets a life sentence.  Bok Kyu and Da Jeong make the big announcement that they are a couple.  But, of course, everyone already knew!  After continually promising to leave and then never going anywere, Ga Young finally seems ready to really leave.  But then, she meets a young girl being abused by her father, and just like that, she realizes she has unfinished business in Korea.

And Koo Won disintegrates after breaking the "Demon Code" by saving Do Hee.  But after he has been gone for awhile, Do Hee goes to the sea where they first met, and he suddenly appears in front of her.  When Koo Won thanks god and asks why, she says that she heard Do Hee's wish for him to come back, and since she lost the bet with Koo Won earlier, she owed him one.  Now, Koo Won is obsessed with making Do Hee live as long as humanly possible.  Their future should be interesting!

Personal Insights

My Thoughts on Bad Prosecutor

'Romance in the House' is a family drama that explores themes of second chances and forgiveness. Thanks to its tone and pacing, this one falls more into the romantic drama category than rom-com.  But there are plenty of silly moments.  The cast is talented and the reunion of the leads, who starred together back in 2013, is a fun touch.

Unfortunately, the plot just felt kind of average.  The blend of romance, family melodrama, comedy, and mystery all crammed into 12 episodes made the plot feel like a lackluster hodgepodge of dramas we have seen before;  particularly last year's "Not Others". For me, the bottom line is, this is not a bad drama.  I enjoyed it enough in the moment to keep watching.  But there was nothing especially memorable about it.    I give 'Romance in the House' a 7 out of 10 ramen.

Plot Overview of 'romance in the house'

'Romance in the House': A Tale of Love and Redemption

After he suffers a series of disastrous business failures, a young mother divorces her husband and raises their two children on her own.  Now, 11 years later, the children are adults themselves, and they have all gone on with their lives.  So the woman is shocked to discover that the wealthy new landlord who bought their apartment building is actually her long lost husband.  And he seems determined to win back her trust.  But the family isn't ready to just forgive him and let him back into their hearts.

Meeting the leads

Lead Male Character: Ji Jin Hee as Byeon Mu Jin

Byeon Mu Jin was scammed out of all his money and his wife's business.  At the end of her rope, Ae Yeon divorces him and tells him to never contact her or their kids again.  But after 11 years of hunting down the swindler, Mu Jin returns with the money he lost, plus a healthy profit.  And the first thing he does with his new-found fortune is buy the apartment building his family has been living in.  But while he has dreamed of coming home to reconcile with them, his family isn't quite ready to welcome him with open arms.

And while Mu Jin is focused on winning back the love and trust of his family, his new tenants are fixated on a different problem.  They all know that Mu Jin left Korea as a man in serious debt.  So how does he return with enough money to buy an apartment building in cash?    And does their former landlords mysterious death have anything to do with Mu Jin showing up?

Byeon Mu Jin is kind and generous, which is what got him into trouble in the first place. He is surprised and disappointed to discover that in his absence, the daughter who had once adored him, has developed a lot of resentment toward him.  Perhaps, even more than his relationship with his wife, Mu Jin is desperate to repair the fractured relationship with his daughter.  Ji Jin Hee may be stronger in action style dramas.  The chemistry in this one felt a bit flat for me.  But he handled the character himself well enough.  The smooth, happy-go-lucky role is a good fit for him.

Meeting the lead characters: Geum ae yeon

Lead Female Character: Kim Jee Soo as Geum Ae Yeon

Geum Ae Yeon married Mu Jin when they were young. And although she loved him, she couldn't stand to watch him put their family in financial distress.  So she divorces him and works hard to raise their two kids on her own.  Now the kids are adults themselves, and her daughter, Mi Rae works a full time job to support the family, while Ae Yeon works part time as she can.  So Ae Yeon is shocked when the wealthy new landlord of their apartment building turns out to be her estranged ex-husband.

But the fact that he is financially well-off now does not immediately absolve him of the stress and misery his early actions caused them or what she has had to go through as a single mom for 11 years.  But what his reappearance does do is take some of the immediate pressure off her. And with her kids grown and living their own lives, she realizes for the first time she has an opportunity to explore her own dreams.

Geum Ae Yeon is a great reminder that it's never too late to achieve your dreams, even if they have been delayed by life and family.  She is hardworking and a devoted mother.  She is also a great friend to her neighbors in the apartment building.  I thought this role as a mature mother with flashes of fierce independence and youthful enthusiasm fit Kim Jee Soo well.  It's been a few years since we have seen her on the small screen, and it was great to have her back.  I liked her in this role.

A Complete Look at Romance in the House 2024

Choi Min Ho as Nam Tae Pyeong

Nam Tae Pyeong works as a security guard at the grocery store Mi Rae works for.  But what no one knows is that his father is actually the CEO of the company.  Tae Pyeong has no interest in taking over the family company, but his father keeps insisting that he try.  After a series of chance encounters, Tae Pyeong becomes interested in Mi Rae, but after she discovers who he really is, she assumes he is a rich, self-important jerk.

A Complete Look at Romance in the House 2024

Yoon San Ha as Byeon Hyeon Jae

Byeon Hyeon Jae is Mu Jin and Ae Yeon's son.  He is the youngest in the family, with few memories of what life had been like with a father.  Mi Rae has been paying Hyeon Jae's tuition for college, but secretly, Hyeon Jae has taken the money to research business opportunities.  And when the family finds out how closely he is following in his father's footsteps, everyone, including Mu Jin, jumps in to oppose him.

Highlights of 'ROmance in the House'

Three Things I Loved

Honest Characters

This drama gives us a cast of flawed, but realistic, characters.  Honestly, while we see character growth for each of them, their headstrong personalities all remain largely, unapologetically unchanged.  And they all, without exception, in my opinion, still have a long way to go.  While they all had moments that made me made to jump through my screen and scream at them, I appreciate the attempt to "keep it real".

Mi Rae and Tae Pyeong

While Mi Rae the daughter made me want to scream often, I really loved her relationship with Tae Pyeong.  They were cute without being sickeningly sweet.  And the fact that Mi Rae refused to help Tae Pyeong's father convince Tae Pyeong to do something he didn't want was heroic.  I wanted to stand up and cheer!  All in all, this couple was fun to watch, as they slowly grew closer and respected each other's life choices without question.

Social Norms

There is a lot to be said about kdramas that aren't afraid to step on some toes and challenge the existing social norms of the culture.  This drama has that in spades.  Whether it's Ae Yeon's role as a divorced, single mother or her fearless return to the work force as a mature woman, she is no weak, helpless housewife.  And that is not a "problem" she is looking to "fix".  Each of the other leads also have their own angle on breaking social modes.

critiques of 'ROmance in the House'

Areas for Improvement

1. Mi Rae:

I had very little patience for Mi Rae's relationship with her parents, especially in the beginning.  I found her actions to be selfish.  She kind of acted like a spoiled child, rather than the mature professional she posed as.  Regardless of her feelings toward her father, I didn't feel like it was her right to step in and interfere with their relationship.  And more than right, I couldn't understand why she would be so inconsiderate of her mother's feelings.  After all her mother did to raise her and her brother, I would think Mi Rae would want her mom to be happy, whatever that entailed.

2. Jeong In:

I thought the whole backstory of Jeong In's "history" with Mu Jin was overblown and uninteresting.  They made it seem like such a big deal, when, in the end, they were barely more than passing acquaintances.  It just seemed like kind of a wasted storyline to me.  If they had spent that time on the romance between her and Jae Geol, I would have been much happier.

3. Neglected Characters:

This drama had way too many side characters, and, for the most part, I found them all kind of annoying.  But then they neglected to develop characters who deserved a better storyline; particularly Jae Geol and Hyeon Jae. A few more well-thought-out secondary stories would have been much better than the delusional novelist and crazy neighbors.

The Conclusion of 'Romance in the HOuse'

Drama Ending Explained

'Romance in the House' ends with Mu Jin's story finally being discovered by all the residents.  And with that mystery solved, the group can finally move on with their own lives.  Mi Rae and Tae Pyeong have their relationship exposed, but Mi Rae's team members gather around to defend her from the vicious rumors of jealous co-workers.  In the end, she gets a promotion for all her hard work.

The apartment novelist publishes a successful web novel and his wife announces her pregancy.  Jae Geol and Jeong In finally start a romance of their own.  The family insist on sending Hyeon Jae back to finish college.  Tae Pyeong goes back to teaching taekwondo, and he and Mu Jin, who is coaching full-time, fight for students.  And Ae Yeon finally lives out her dream to be a model by working for the home-shopping network at Mi Rae's company.  And with the exception of Mu Jin and Hyeon Jae, who are making up for lost time as roommates, everyone else is living alone, while happily pursuing their casual romances in their spare time.

Personal Insights

My Review and Rating

'Serendipity's Embrace' is a short, 8 episode romantic drama that tells the story of first love and second chances.  It is sweet and binge-worthy.  The leads have a nice chemistry, there is a fair share of warmth and comedy, and the drama manages to fit an awful lot into 8 episodes.  We get some nice secondary characters and a relatively drama-free tale of romance.

Unfortunately, the multiple storylines are also its biggest weakness.  By trying to pack so much in, we lose some of the focus on the lead couple and their growth together.  All in all, this drama makes a nice, quick watch, the characters are likable and the story is pleasant.  But I wouldn't say there is anything exceptional about it. The pieces were there, but it just came off feeling a bit ordinary and rushed for me. I give 'Serendipity's Embrace' a 7 out 10 ramen.

story summary

First Love & Second Chances

After moving to the United States 10 years ago, while he was still a high school student, a genius businessman finally returns to Korea.  And on his first day back, he runs into his former classmate and first love, in a cafe.  But she runs away before he can reintroduce himself.  Luckily for him, fate seems to be on his side when he discovers that she lives and works in the same buildings as him.  Determined to take advantage of this second chance, he hopes to win her heart.  But the scars of her own first love and a traumatic childhood will prove a difficult hurdle to overcome.

Kim So Hyun as Lee Hong Ju and Chae Jong Hyeop as Kang Hu Yeong

Meet the Leads

A Complete Look at Serendipity's Embrace 2024

Lee Hong Ju's Story

Lee Hong Ju is an animation producer who joined a company based on her passion for the art.  After her first love broke her heart, she gave up on romance.  But a chance encounter with her former classmate, Hu Yeong, begins to thaw her cold heart for the first time in a long time.

But just when she starts to think that she might be interested in dating him, her ex shows up and says he wants to get back together. And Hu Yeong's mother is insisting he leave Korea and come back to the U.S.  Now Hong Ju will face some difficult choices as she tries to understand what her heart really wants and what fate has in store for her future.

Hong Ju's Character Analysis

Lee Hong Ju has a deep fear of abandonment that stems from a childhood trauma.  So when her first love, Jun Ho, leaves her with no explanation, it hurts even more deeply.  But Hu Yeong's unconditional love for her will help her see that it isn't her fault and has nothing to do with her own worth.

Kim So Hyun's bright personality was a nice match for this character.  The role played well into her strengths as an actress.  While I don't think it was a stand-out performance for someone as talented as her, she played the part well.

A Complete Look at Serendipity's Embrace 2024

Kang Hu Yeong's Story

Kang Hu Yeong's mom moved him to the U.S. while he was a high school student.  But he never forgot his first love, Hong Ju.  So he is thrilled when he runs into Hong Ju in a cafe on his first day back in Korea.  And even more thrilled to find that she lives in the rooftop apartment above his uncle's house, where he will be staying.

Now Hu Yeong is determined to make the most of the second chance fate has given him to win Hong Ju's heart.  But although Hu Yeong is making plans to open his own business in Korea and stay there, his mother has other ideas.

Hu Yeong's Character Analysis

Hu Yeong was a talented student who has become a genius businessman for his family company.  He is also a dutiful son who has always done whatever his mother wanted.  But through his feelings for Hong Ju, Hu Yeong begins to realize that it is time for him to start living his own life.

Chae Jong Hyeop is a charming young actor.  He tends to play these reserved, shy parts well.  Although we don't see a lot of development with this character, I enjoyed watching Chae Jong Hyeop in this role.

Secondary Characters

Key Secondary Figures in 'Serendipity's Embrace

Yun Ji On as Bang Jun Ho

A Complete Look at Serendipity's Embrace 2024

Bang Jun Ho is an author who was Hong Ju's first love.  But the sudden success of his first novel led to intense stress and writer's block.  Ashasmed of his weakness, he runs away without ever telling Hong Ju why.  Now he is back in Korea, and he has offered to work with Hong Ju's company as an excuse to try to get her back.

Kim Da Som as Kim Hye Ji

A Complete Look at Serendipity's Embrace 2024

Kim Hye Ji has been Hong Ju's best friend since high school.  It is Hye Ji's crush on Hu Yeong that has Hong Ju delivering love letters to Hu Yeong.  Now Hye Ji works as a teacher at their old school.  When she first hears that he is back in Korea, Hye Ji dreams of finally dating Hu Yeong.  But she soon realizes Hong Ju already has his heart.

Choi Dae Chul as Baek Wook

A Complete Look at Serendipity's Embrace 2024

Baek Wook is Hu Yeong's uncle.  He runs the Korea division of the family business.  He is close friends with Hong Ju, and rents the apartment above his house to her.  He also works in the same building as Hong Ju.  And Hong Ju's boss is Baek Wook's first love, although no one at either of their companys' knows that.

3 Things I Loved in 'Serendipity's Embrace'

Not All First Loves are Meant to Be

So often in kdramas, we see the romanticizing of the first love.  And for Hu Yeong, that was true.  But we also get to see through Hong Ju and Jun Ho that just because it's first love, does not mean it's better.  I do think Hong Ju was attracted to Hu Yeong from the beginning. But she was too busy fantasizing about her favorite author to realize it.  But regardless, although Jun Ho is considered her first love, he is not her fate.  In the same way that Hu Yeong is not Hye Ji's fate.

Second Lead Couple

While Hye Ji's crush on Hu Yeong was obviously one-sided and not meant to be, I really enjoyed her relationship with Gyeong Tak.  The two of them were really cute together, and the fact that Hye Ji's father finally got the son-in-law he had always dreamed of was just icing on the cake!  Their shy, awkward interactions were endearing and I was definitely rooting for them from the beginning.

Closure With Jun Ho

I thought this drama did a nice job of resolving what happened between Jun Ho and Hong Ju.  And while it's easy to sympathize with Jun Ho's emotional challenges, the drama doesn't brush off what he did or expect Hong Ju to just forgive it all.  In the end, the fault for their relationship falling apart is his.  And expecting to just show up years later and have everything be forgiven is unreasonable.  But it's also important that Hong Ju has grown from it and she no longer carries the pain.

3 Things I Didn't Care For in 'Serendipity's Embrace'

No Guilt?

Obviously, it has been 10 years since high school and it's not like Hye Ji and Hu Yeong ever dated.  But still, you would think that, at least initially, Hong Ju would feel some guilt for liking a guy her best friend had a mad crush on.  It just would have been nice if they had made it seem like Hong Ju felt bad about the way it all turned out.  They seemed to breeze by that a little too fast for my liking.

Hu Yeong's Mom

Hu Yeong is such a bitter, selfish character.  I really couldn't understand her. She yelled at Hu Yeong and Hong Ju for ruining Hu Yeong's life, while at the same time suing her own son to make him do something he didn't want to do. And although I'm glad Hu Yeong and Hong Ju found a way to stay together in the end, I really hate it that once again, Hu Yeong is letting his mom dictate his life.

Too Much

This drama set out to do an awful lot.  The range of characters and storylines could have easily filled at least 12 episodes.  On one hand, it's nice to have bingeable shows that are meant to be light and breezy.  But I felt like they introduced too much and then didn't do a complete job with with any of the characters or their stories.

The Conclusion of 'serendipity's Embrace'

Drama Ending Explained

'Serendipity's Embrace' ends with happy endings for most of our characters.  Jun Ho has finally made his peace with Hong Ju by telling her the truth.  And now it's time for him to move on with his own life.   Gyeong Tak finally confesses his feelings to Hye Ji and she and her dad could not be happier.

Hu Yeong's mom goes to Hong Ju and begs her to come to the U.S. with them, so that Hu Yeong will do what she wants.  At first, Hong Ju refuses and Hong Ju and Hu Yeong plan to just continue their relationship long distance.  But later, Hong Ju shows up at the airport with her luggage and tells Hu Yeong that she has some vacation time from her job, so she is coming with him after all, at least for the time being.

Final Impressions and Rating

'In a world where memories can be eternal, what would you choose to remember?'

Plot Summary

A Glimpse into 'Yonder'

In the 2030's, shortly after assisted suicide becomes legal in Korea, a man helps his wife to die with dignity at her request.  When he receives a mysterious message from his deceased wife shortly after her death, inviting him to a place called Yonder, he assumes it is some sick mistake.

But when he meets others who visit Yonder, he discovers an alternate world  created by a famous "doctor",  that exists from the memories of loved ones we have lost.  And as questions about the ethicality of Yonder surface in the media, he will be forced to make a choice about what defines life and what he is willing to give up to be with his wife again.

Final Thoughts

'Yonder': A Journey Beyond

'Yonder' is a slow, thought-provoking drama that delves into the complexities of life, death, and what lies beyond. At 6 short episodes, it feels more like an extended movie than a full drama of developed characters.  But the concept is fresh and I found myself thinking about it long after I had finished the drama itself.  The cinematography is sweeping and beautiful.  I give 'Yonder' a 7 out of 10 ramen.

Plot Summary

An Overview of the Storyline

In the 2030's, shortly after assisted suicide becomes legal in Korea, a man helps his wife to die with dignity at her request.  When he receives a mysterious message from his deceased wife shortly after her death, inviting him to a company building called By and By, he assumes it is some sick mistake. But when he meets others who visit By and By, he discovers an alternate world, called Yonder.

Yonder is created by a famous "doctor" as a place that exists from the memories of loved ones we have lost.  And as questions about the ethicality of Yonder surface in the media, he will be forced to make a choice about what defines life and what he is willing to give up to be with his wife again.

Exploring the Leads

Shin Ha Kyun as Kim Jae Hyun

A Startling Look Beyond 7/24/24

Kim Jae Hyun's Story

Kim Jae Hyun is heartbroken that his wife's cancer is taking its toll on her life and happiness.  He agrees to help her end her life legally, to end her suffering.  But after her death, he begins getting mysterious messages that say they are from her, asking him to come and see her in By and By.  At first he ignores it, but eventually he gives in and finds an AI generated world created from her memories.

And when the AI invites him to leave his life in the real world behind and join her in this new "reality" called Yonder, he agrees.  But what seems like paradise in the beginning starts to show its limitations.  Will he be able to say goodbye to his wife again, knowing that it is forever, to go back to the "real world"?

Kim Jae Hyun's Character

Kim Jae Hyun is logical and loyal.  His love for his wife makes it impossible to ignore her messages, even when they seem like some cruel joke.  And that same loyalty makes it harder for him to leave Yonder once he goes there.  But even his love can't stop him from wondering if this alternate reality is really life at all.

Shin Ha Kyun is a talented actor and I love that he isn't afraid to take such a wide range of roles.  This character allowed him to explore a softer, more introspective role, and I enjoyed watching him show so much emotion.

Han Ji Min as Cha Yi Hoo

A Startling Look Beyond 7/24/24

Cha Yi Hoo's Story

Cha Yi Hoo was living a blessed life with a husband she loved, dreaming of having their first child.  But a shocking cancer diagnosis changed all of that.  As the illness begins to take its toll, she decides to end her life.  But first, she contacts an organization that promises to save her chosen moments on a chip that will create an alternate world where she will live on through the memories.

When her husband finally comes to join her in Yonder, he finds not only his wife but also their daughter, alive and well.  Their days fall into an easy, carefree rhythm until Yi Hoo starts to feel the emptiness of living the same day over and over.  And when she realizes her daughter has not grown a single inch, the futility of their new life becomes overwhelming.  Yi Hoo talks with Jae Hyun and they decide to end it all by drinking a potion Yi Hoo got from Dr. K.

Cha Yi Hoo's Character

Cha Yi Hoo is thoughtful and full of a contagious joy.  But all of that changes after her illness.  And even the "perfect" world of Yonder can't bring her any real happiness.  Her realization that Yonder has no "future" for them or their daughter is the final straw for her.

Han Ji Min plays this kind of role well.  She seems slightly ethereal as the perfect memory of herself and her life with Jae Hyun.  There is a quiet grace to her that made Yi Hoo's struggle and sacrifice feel genuine.

“If you can’t forget about what you’ve lost, then it’s not losing”

Supporting Cast Insights

Lee Jung Eun as Seiren

A Startling Look Beyond 7/24/24

Seiren is the bridge that helps those still alive connect to their loved ones in Yonder.  She is the wife of Doctor K and handles the practical parts of their endeavor by visiting their clients to retrieve their memories and bringing their loved ones to them.

Jung Jin Young as Doctor K

A Startling Look Beyond 7/24/24

Dr. K is the scientist behind the idea of Yonder.  He first created it after the death of his young daughter.  Now his face is seen in adds promoting Yonder and promising people "death is no longer something to be feared."

Yoon Yi Reh as Peach

A Startling Look Beyond 7/24/24

Peach is the first person Jae Hyun meets on his visit to Yonder.  She goes there regularly to visit her father.  She also introduces him to others like them who go to Yonder to see loved ones.

Highlights of 'Yonder'

What I Loved About the Drama

Thought-Provoking

'Yonder' is the kind of drama that gives you plenty to think about.  It asks some big life questions.  What is life?  What is death?  Can you have a happy ending with no "ending"?  Is it immoral to make money off the pain and suffering of others?  The list goes on... I appreicate a series that tackles difficult ideas and reminds me to live each moment.

Cinematography

'Yonder does some interesting things with stunning, dreamlike sequences.  The views and colors shift and change with what is happening in the story in ways that give a full immersion kind of feeling.  As Seiren rockets the sports car down the road toward Yonder, we feel catapulted into the new world with Jae Hyun.  No shot feels wasted and all of it seems ripe with meaning.

"Peach"

Peach's story was really intersting.  The idea of Yi Hoo and her memories makes sense.  But Peach's whole memory world is founded on her own delusion. That takes the idea of Yonder to a whole new levels where people can create and live in whatever fantasy they want.  This is also a nice intro into the idea of Yi Hoo's baby, who never actually existed.

Critiques of 'Yonder'

Investigation

This drama tried to do a whole lot in 6 short episodes.  One of the elements that never quite came together for me was Jae Hyun's investigation of By and By.  The characters introduced for that subplot, like the organ transplant officer and the hacker, never really take shape.  And honestly, Jae Hyun's sudden choice to go to Yonder regardless of what he has discovered makes the whole storyline kind of pointless.

Questions

I don't necessarily hate short dramas or open-endings.  But this one seemed to leave way too much vaguely unanswered.  If Jae Hyun can be brought back into his body from Yonder, than what is happening to the bodies of everyone else who stay there.  Do they slowly age and die in some kind of coma?  Who actually has the "agency" to decide the memories?  In Yi Hoo's case, it's the one who has died but in Peach's case she, as the "surviving" family member, created her father out of her imagination.

The Psychology

I want to understand the characters in this drama, but it's a hard one for me.  I can't imagine being selfish enough to expect my loved ones to die just because I am no longer with them.  To ask the living to willingly walk away from the world they exist in just for me seems entirely unfair.  Likewise, I can't imagine packaging an alternate reality as a heavenly religion that obviously takes advantage of someone in the midst of their suffering.

The Conclusion of 'Yonder'

Drama Ending Explained

'Yonder' ends with Yi Hoo and Jae Hyun deciding to share the potion given to Yi Hoo to help her "leave Yonder".  Jae Hyun is saved by his hacker buddy and his new side-kick Eun.  He wakes up sometime later to find the world fully embracing Dr. K and Yonder.  He confronts Seiren, who tells him she can't give up on the idea and that some day it will be perfect.  The final scene shows Jae Hyun leaving By and By, looking like he is ready for a fight!

Personal Insights

Reflecting on 'Yonder'

'Yonder' is a slow, thought-provoking drama that delves into the complexities of life, death, and what lies beyond. At 6 short episodes, it feels more like an extended movie than a full drama of developed characters.  But the concept is fresh and I found myself thinking about it long after I had finished the drama itself.  The cinematography is sweeping and beautiful.  I give 'Yonder' a 7 out of 10 ramen.

'Wedding Impossible' is a Sweet Drama With Unexpected Charm

Personal Insights

Saved by Good Chemistry

'Wedding Impossible' is a romantic comedy about a contractual marriage between an actress and her gay best friend.  To be honest, I really expected this one to be a hot mess. And I was pleasantly surprised.  In my opinion,  it's nowhere close to perfect, but it has some very sweet moments.  There are too many ridiculous side characters for a 12 episode drama.  The acting is a bit rough in spots and the story gets more flat and inconsistent as it goes. But what kept me invested was the chemistry between the lead couple. Their bickering and interactions just really worked for me, even when the rest of the drama didn't.  If you are a fan of rom-coms, this one has some nice moments and is a fun, easy watch.   I give "Wedding Impossible a 7 out of 10 ramen.
