The Story

Two identical twin sisters may look exactly the same, but their lives have taken very different paths. While one works the demanding schedule of an officer worker in Seoul, her sister has given up on her dreams of life in the city to live at home, doing odd jobs while she takes care of their mother and ailing grandmother. When the office worker suffers a devastating workplace trauma, her sister steps in to suggest that the pair switch places until her sister can rest and heal. And as they walk in each others' shoes, they begin a journey of self-discovery, but also gain a new understanding of the person they thought they knew best in their lives.

“I realized after going through a few chapters that life isn’t a book with an ending. It’s a notebook I have to fill in myself. Even if I’m confronted by a blank page, it’s not the end, but a beginning. It’s the unwritten first page of my story. There will surely be unexpected twists and turns along the way, but I’ll keep searching for a line of happiness and keep writing until I’ve filled every page.”

My Personal Thoughts and Ratings

'Our Unwritten Seoul' is a romantic drama about healing and being true to yourself. The complex characters are well-written and Park Bo Young plays the dual role well. The drama examines complicated family relationships and the misunderstandings that can drive relationships apart.

But the tone of this drama is quiet and introspective, leaving some to complain that it felt boring. It's true that there isn't much action to the story. It is much more about the characters and their development and interactions. Although these elements are included in the story, this is much more a slow-burn romance than a "body-swap" drama or a business drama. But I enjoyed the thoughtful plot and the wonderful acting. I give 'Our Unwritten Seoul' a 9 out of 10 ramen.

Meeting the stars: Park Bo Young and Park Jin Young

Park Bo Young as Yoo Mi Ji / Yoo Mi Rae

Yoo Mi Ji is the youngest of identical twins. Though she had once dreamed of becoming an Olympic runner, a career-ending injury caused her to alter paths. She gave up her own personal dreams, choosing instead to stay in their small hometown, doing odd jobs to help support her mother and acting as her grandmother's primary care giver. But when she makes a visit to her sister in the city, she learns that she has suffered from excessive workplace bullying and is emotionally unstable. So Mi Ji suggests they repeat their favorite childhood prank by changing places, so that her sister can have some time to to rest and heal.

And so Mi Ji moves into her sister's apartment in Seoul and does her best to tackle the challenges of her job.  When she runs into her childhood friend, Lee Ho Su, it seems their secret may be exposed after all.  But instead, Ho Su becomes her greatest support. And as the pair clear up a misunderstanding from their youth, they rediscover the affection and attraction they have always shared.

Yoo Mi Ji is outspoken and a free spirit.  She embraces life with gusto. But things haven't always been easy for her. She suffered her own trauma after her running accident, and she lives in fear that something bad could drive her back into that dark and hopeless time.  Park Bo Young did an amazing job with this dual role, but I especially felt her skill shine through in the role of Mi Ji.  Her spunky personality fit the role perfectly.

A Safe Peek at Our Unwritten Seoul 2025
A Safe Peek at Our Unwritten Seoul 2025

Park Jin Young as Lee Ho Su

Lee Ho Su grew up with Mi Ji and Mi Rae in their hometown. But it was always Mi Ji who had his heart. But a misunderstanding caused Mi Ji to believe it was Mi Rae that he liked, and Ho Su never had the opportunity to declare his true feelings.

As an adult, Ho Su has become a successful lawyer. But when he meets Mi Rae in a sexual harassment case that is later dropped, he is concerned about her. Little does he know that when he seeks her out again, the twins have traded places.  And it doesn't take Ho Su very long to realize something is different about this Mi Rae.  Now Ho Su will use the opportunity to finally clear the air with Mi Ji and find out if he still has a chance to win her heart.

Lee Ho Su is shy and quiet.  And his carefully guarded secret that he is hard of hearing due to an accident he suffered as a young person makes him the perfect legal champion for those in need.  He understands the challenges people can face because they are different.  I have loved watching Park Jin Young blossom as an actor. For someone with such a big personality on the music stage, I love to see him play these calm, gentle characters. He played this role with just the right amount of reserve and I really enjoyed his portrayal of this character.

Supporting characters

Ryu Kyung Soo as Han Se Jin

Han Se Jin was a successful businessman and CIO of a hedge fund. But after the death of his grandfather, Se Jin gives up city life to take over his grandfather's strawberry farm.  When he puts out an ad for an assistant, Mi Ji applies.  But it is Mi Rae who shows up on day one.

A Comprehensive Look at Our Unwritten Seoul 2025

Jang Young Nam as Kim Ok Hui

Kim Ok Hui is Mi Rae and Mi Ji's mother. After the death of her husband, Ok Hui has been responsible for raising the twins and looking after her own mother in her old age.  But her desire to save her daughters from the same difficult life she has led often makes her seem cold.

A Comprehensive Look at Our Unwritten Seoul 2025

Won Mi Kyung as Kim Ro Sa

Kim Ro Sa is the owner of a small restaurant in Seoul. She is the first person Mi Ji meets in her new job, and although they start as opponents, they develop a close relationship. Later Ho Su steps forward to help Ro Sa with a legal issue she has.

A Comprehensive Look at Our Unwritten Seoul 2025

3 things i loved about 'Our Unwritten Seoul'

1.

Warm Tones:

I really just appreciated the heartwarming themes of growth, healing, and empathy in this drama.  Each new plot seemed to introduce a new bias and offer a fresh approach at finding healing and acceptance from those around you. It felt like one, big warm hug.

2.

Ro Sa:

I loved what an interesting and surprising character Ro Sa was.  At first, she seemed like the very sterotypical cantankerous old person set in her ways. But I was delighted when she not only moved beyond that point, but then  got a whole story of her own. And her bond with Mi Ji and Ho Su was a delight to watch.

3.

Kim Tae I:

I thought it was really interesting that they brought in Su Yeon's brother to give us a fresh perspective of her story.  Because, while it is true that Mi Rae suffered personally in the aftermath, the backstory is much more powerful through the eyes of those more directly affected.

3 things i didn't love about 'Our Unwritten Seoul'

1.

Mi Rae's Development:

While this story originally sets up as the story of two twins who switched places, it is really focused on Mi Ji. I was disappointed by the lack of story for Mi Rae.  There was definitely potential to show more of her growth and her romance with Se Jin.  But in the end, I didn't feel like she showed much development at all.

2.

Real-Life Implications:

Okay, I just have to say this.  In reality, committing fraud by impersonating anyone on the job (even your sister) could carry some serious consequences.  And the fact that we just skated by that fact without acknowledging how far-fetched that is is a little funny.

3.

Back to School:

I was a little disappointed that in the end they had Mi Ji choose to study for college. I get the irony of the fact that the sisters almost traded lives in the end. But school is not all in Mi Ji's area of strengths, which is backed up by the fact it took her three attempts.  I wish she had embraced something that felt more like our fiesty, out of the box Mi Ji.  For example, I would have loved to see her take Ro Sa up on her offer to run the restaurant.  I think Mi Ji could have used her knack for advertising to turn it into a thriving hot spot.

The Conclusion of 'Our Unwritten Seoul'

The Ending

'Our Unwritten Seoul' ends with a happy but realistic ending. First, those responsible for bullying both Su Yeon and Mi Rae finally receive the punishment they deserve.  We do have a heartbreaking goodbye with Wol Sun, but in the course of her physical decline, Ok Hui finds out that her mom really did love her and try to protect her. And this generational healing is likely to trickle down into her relationship with the twins, which is wonderful news.

After learning he may be losing his hearing, Ho Su makes an ill-advised decision to break up with Mi Ji "for her sake". Luckily the other women in his life knock some sense into him and he goes back to beg forgiveness. But we do get one funny moment when the mothers are both shocked to learn Mi Ji and Ho Su are dating, especially since Ho Su's mom had always been sure it was Mi Rae he liked.

Se Jin decides to go back to his company and leave the farm in the capable hands of Mi Rae, who has given up on city life for good. They never actually define their relationship, but it seems obvious they hope to take their "romance" to the next level.

One year later, we get a nice catch up.  Mi Rae is thriving at her new job as strawberry farmer and is thrilled when Se Jin pops in for a surprise visit.  After several failed attempts, Mi Ji got into college and is studying to be a therapist. Ho Su is learning sign language both to help his clients and in the event that he may need it at some point down the road.

And Mi Ji and Ho Su are living together while Ho Su waits for perfect time to finally propose. The final scene shows the couple going to watch a poetry reading by Ro Sa of the "real Ro Sa's" poems and the trio are all smiles as they pose for a picture together, with Mi Ji's powerful voiceover about every end being a new beginning.

My Personal Thoughts and Ratings

'Tastefully Yours' is a short rom-com about love and food. This is another drama that focuses on the healing powers of cooking. Kang Ha Neul gives a great performance and the supporting cast do a wonderful job. The friendships of the kitchen crew are almost more rewarding than the actual romance. The story is simple, with some nice emotional side plots

Unfortunately, I didn't find the writing for this drama very strong. There is an absolutely pointless side plot in the middle that wastes too much valuable time. And because of this, we lose some of the time that could have been devoted to character development.  In the end, the drama just left me a bit underwhelmed. But Kang Ha Neul is always a delight and if you're looking for a short, simple rom-com, this one isn't bad. I give 'Tastefully Yours' an 7 out of 10.

Meeting the stars: Kang Ha Neul and Go Min Si

Kang Ha Neul as Han Beom U

Han Beom U is the executive director of Hansang foods.  He is also the founder's younger son. His mother has promised to leave the business to the first son who can get a 3-star Michelin rating for their restaurant. Beom U has made a career of buying out small restaurants and stealing their recipes.

But when he sets his sights on Jeongje, a small restaurant outside of the city, he underestimates the stubbornness of the restaurant's talented chef.  And just as Beom U begins to learn the true beauty of great food prepared from the heart, his mother, Chairman Han, threatens to destroy Jeongje and anyone associated with it. And he will have to step in to try to protect the restaurant and the people he has come to care about.

Han Beom U is greedy and determined to win both the family company and his mother's approval. But over the course of the show, he learns that the best foods come from the heart. Kang Ha Neul is always a great lead. He handles this role with his usual competent charm, although I didn't always like his character very much.

A Safe Peek at Tastefully Yours 2025
A Safe Peek at Tastefully Yours 2025

Go Min Si as Mo Yeon Ju

Mo Yeon Ju grew up as an orphan in a buddhist temple before going away to Paris to study cooking. After a short and painful stint in Sapporo working and improving her skills, she returns to Korea and buys an old restaurant in the countryside named Jeongje.

Although Jeongje lacks any proper advertisement, Yeon Ju's amazing cooking speaks for itself. And word of mouth eventually reaches Beom U, an executive director for Hansang Foods, who would love to turn Yeon Ju's talent into a profit. And the future of her restaurant and her budding relationship with Beom U will come down to a "heated" cook-off  between Jeongje and Beom U's former restaurant, now being run by his brother, Seon U.

Yeon Ju is passionate about cooking authentic meals from premium, natural ingredients.  But sadly, her stance from the beginning never really grows or develops.  I think Go Min Si is very talented, but this character didn't give her much chance to stand out. She played the part she was given, but it all felt kind of flat.

Supporting characters

Kim Shin Rok as Jin Myeong Suk

Jin Myeong Suk is a star cook at a neighboring gimbap restaurant. After devoting years of her skills without being properly appreciated, Myeong Suk shows up at Jeongje and begs Yeon Ju to let her work there. And Myeong Suk's experience in cooking traditional Korean fare adds a new dimension to Jeonje's menu.

A Comprehensive Look at Tastefully Yours 2025

Yoo Soo Bin as Sin Chun Seung

Sin Chun Seong is the son of the owner of the gimbap restaurant Myeong Suk used to work at.  After accidentally causing a fire at Jeongje, Chun Seong shows up to help repair the restaurant and ends up staying to help them run it.

A Comprehensive Look at Tastefully Yours 2025

Bae Na Ra as Han Seon U

Han Seon U is Beom U's older brother. He runs La Lecel, a gourmet restaurant that he hopes can get a 3-star rating before Beom U, so he can take over Hansang Foods.

A Comprehensive Look at Tastefully Yours 2025

3 things i loved about 'Tastefully yours'

1.

Food as Medicine:

This drama was at it's best when it focused on the way food can bring people together. From our rag-tag restaurant crew to guests like the pre-wedding party, we see food warm the soul and build bridges. And although Beom U's mom is a particularly tough case, making her sit down to a meal with her sons at the end was a nice touch.

2.

Brothers:

Beom U and Seon U's mom did quite a number on them. Rather than a medicine, she weaponized food and food preparation to drive a wedge between the brothers. So I was thrilled to see that in the end, they moved beyond her ill intentions, and began taking steps to rebuild their relationship.

3.

Weak Hero Crossover:

With all of the overlap, how could they not sneak some kind of reference to 'Weak Hero'. And the fact that they kept it subtle made it all the more fun. For those who didn't see 'Weak Hero',  the reference is to Chun Seung's line to Myeong Suk's favorite actor, "Where did you go to high school?" The dramas share 3 cast members in common.

3 things i didn't love about 'Tastefully Yours'

1.

Ex and Sapporo:

I have no idea what they were thinking to throw this pointless sideplot into an already very short drama. The Japan trip and the ex-boyfriend it introduces have no real purpose on the overall plot and feels like a total waste of screen time. This time would have been better spent focusing on Yeon Ju herself instead of her pointless past.

2.

Yeon Ju's Choices:

Not only does Yeon Ju's character lack any depth, in my opinion, but her decisons often feel inconsistent and non-sensical. The lengths she goes to to protect her ex-boyfriend make no sense to me, her conceding the cook-off victory felt strangely anti-climatic, and her instant forgiveness of Beom U's lies seemed premature.

3.

Beom U's Future:

For me, the family business always seemed to bring out the worst in Beom U.  His scars are evident and he never seems to find any joy in it.  So I was hoping that Beom U would finally get his chance to break away and pursue a career he is passionate about, while staying by Yeon Ju's side to help.  There are mentions of him studying architecture in college. I wish they had revived that interest and given him a fresh, new start.

The Conclusion of 'Tastefully Yours'

The Ending

\'Tastefully Yours" gives us the nice, happy ending that fits the drama's easy-going style. And what would a cooking drama be without a final cook-off? After La Lecel and Jeongje both recieve 3 stars, Chairman Han suggests a televised contest, because, of course, there can really only be one best restaurant in Korea.

Minus Yeon Ju for the time being, Beom U is able to get the rest of the crew back together. And Myeong Suk finally gets her chance to shine, combining Yeon Ju's recipes with her own special touch. Yeon Ju finally comes back and forgives Beom U. And even though the results are rigged by Chairman Han, Yeon Ju admits defeat, and Beom U's mom decides to let her keep running her restaurant anyway, now that she has been declared the winner.

In the end, Jeongje lives on, with Myeong Suk now an official main chef. Chun Seung finally gets his dad's approval and takes over their family restaurant, with his own touches, of course. Chairman Han continues to spin the media to her advantage. Yeong Hye has left gourmet dining to open her own food truck. And Beom U and Seon U have taken some small steps to restore their relationship.

And our lead couple? The final scene shows Yeon Ju and Beom U, back in the garden where they first met as Yeon Ju tells him that she decided to forgive him "because she likes him". He says he loves her and the couple share a kiss.

My Personal Thoughts and Ratings

'Tastefully Yours' is a short rom-com about love and food. This is another drama that focuses on the healing powers of cooking. The Story

A young woman decides to pursue her dreams of marrying a rich "prince" by taking a job at a prestigious social club. But she is surprised to find that while none of the clients hold her attention, the only one she is attracted to is the handsome, young owner who doesn't believe in love or fairytales. But while he swears that he isn't interested in being anyone's Prince Charming, she can't help but feel that there is more going on behind his callous shell than he will admit. And even though she should take him at his word and turn her affections elsewhere, she can't shake her growing feelings for him.

'Dreaming of a Freaking Fairytale' is a modern twist on an age old Story.

My Personal Thoughts and Ratings

'Dreaming of a Freaking Fairytale' is a simple, breezy rom-com that puts a modern lens on the story of Cinderella. It is fun and silly and the leads have great chemistry. Besides romantic love, the drama has positive messages of self and family love.  The drama twists some traditional rom-com tropes for comedic effect and the tongue-in-cheek narrative takes some humorous shots at modern society.

But this drama is definitely cheesy and troupe-heavy. The humor is ridiculously over the top and the story is meant to feel more like a fairytale than a realistic plot. If easy rom-com that requires you to disconnect your brain is not your thing, you should probably do yourself a favor and just skip this one. On the other hand, if you are looking for a quick, short drama that is an easy watch, this one has some adorable moments. And I always love watching Lee Jun Young! I give 'Dreaming of a Freaking Fairytale' a 7 out of 10.

And even though she should take him at his word and turn her affections elsewhere, she can't shake her growing feelings for him.

'Dreaming of a Freaking Fairytale' is a modern twist on an age old Story.

Meeting the stars: Pyo Ye Jin and Lee Jun Young

Pyo Ye Jin as Sin Jae Rim

Following the death of her father, Sin Jae Rim decides to follow her dad's final advice to marry someone rich. She takes a job working at Cheongdam Heaven, an elite social club. Her dream is to win the heart of one of the handsome bachelors that frequents the club. Instead, she finds herself falling for Moon Cha Min, the jaded head of the club, who sees all women as dull, lifeless rocks. But when she confesses that her reason for taking this job was to become a modern day Cinderella, Cha Min vows to keep his walls up around her.

As she learns how to stand on her own feet, Jae Rim finds out that she isn't dependent on a Prince Charming for her own happiness and she can have love and success on her own terms. Now if she can just get Cha Min to give her a chance.

Sin Jae Rim is cheerful and outgoing. But she carries the scars of having her mother abandon her. And although her step mom and sisters did their best to make her feel supported, Jae Rim has never felt like she had a place she truly belonged. Romantic comedies are not usually Pyo Ye Jin's genre, but I always enjoy her acting. She carried this role well and it was fun to see her in such a fun, silly drama.

A Safe Peek at Dreaming of a Freaking Fairytale 2024
A Safe Peek at Dreaming of a Freaking Fairytale 2024

Lee Jun Young as Moon Cha Min

Moon Cha Min is an eighth generation chaebol. He runs Cheongdam Heaven, but his father is the owner. Cha Min skates through life and his motto is "Follow Your Joy". Because Cha Min's mother broke his father's heart, his father has forbid him from ever marrying for love. Which is why Cha Min is engaged to the daughter of a business associate of his father's.

So when Cha Min meets Jae Rim, he is shocked to find he is interested in her. And when he learns of her motive for taking the job, he refuses to let himself be swayed by his feelings. But the more time he spends around her, the harder that proves to be.

Cha Min is aloof and clueless in most interpersonal situations. But the hurt that he suffered when his mother ran away, leaving him bleeding in the street, has caused him to guard his heart carefully. And his father's attitudes toward love and marriage have done nothing to help that. Lee Jun Young has had a crazy year, and it is fun to watch how much he continues to grow as an actor. I thought he fit this charming yet reserved character well and I loved his playful chemistry with Pyo Ye Jin.

Supporting characters

Kim Hyun Jin as Baek Do Hong

Baek Do Hong is a famous movie director who is Jae Rim's first client in her new job.  Do Hong agrees to help Jae Rim by trying to make Cha Min jealous. And Do Hong is hiding a secret of his own that could jeopardize his whole career

A Comprehensive Look at Dreaming of a Freaking Fairytale 2024

Song Ji Woo as Ban Dan A

Ban Dan A is Cha Min's fiancee. She is rich and spoiled, and is used to getting everything she wants. But when she realizes that Cha Min is interested in Jae Rim, she does everything she can to break them up, including blackmailing him.

A Comprehensive Look at Dreaming of a Freaking Fairytale 2024

Baek Joo Hee as Hwang So Ra

Hwang So Ra is Jae Rim's step mom. She finds out shortly after Jae Rim's father's death that she is pregnant. Although she has tried to love and support Jae Rim, Jae Rim has always assumed that her step mom doesn't really love her as much as she loves her other daughters.

A Comprehensive Look at Dreaming of a Freaking Fairytale 2024

3 things i loved about 'Dreaming of a Freaking Fairytale'

1.

Step Family:

I liked that this drama decided to break with the original story to make the step mother and step sisters good characters with pure intentions. It would have been easy to paint them as stereotypical villains. But instead, they chose to give them a way to resolve their misunderstandings and grown closer after Jae Rim's dad's death.

2.

Narrator:

Every fairytale needs a good narrator, and I love that they decided to utilize that. This sassy and brutally honest storyteller adds a nice outside perspective to the story and allows for some fun jabs as modern society.

3.

Lighthearted:

This drama never promises to be profound or a theatrical masterpiece. But it is a silly flight of fancy with simple themes and cute relationships. I love that they committed fully to this casual tone and had fun with it.

3 things i didn't love about 'Dreaming of a Freaking Fairytale'

1.

Ban Dan A:

Usually the secondary leads get a chance to redeem themselves and admit defeat graciously. But Ban Dan A was a spoiled and selfish brat from start to finish. I really hoped that she would at least show a tiny bit of class by the end, but instead she just came off as an annoying character who never gives us any redeeming qualities.

2.

Hit or Miss Humor:

I've said this a million times. I am not a fan of overdone comedy. So maybe I'm not the perfect audience for this kind of drama. But for the most part, while I enjoyed the cute interactions and silly antics, I found the heavy handed humor to not really be very funny.

3.

Secondary Development:

I didn't feel like this drama had any secondary characters with any stories of their own or character development. A few had some fun potential, and Do Hong and Dan A both had hints of backstory. But neither of them ever did more than scratch the surface.

The Conclusion of 'Dreaming of a Freaking Fairytale'

The Ending

Well, what would a fairytale be, modern or otherwise, without a happily ever after? Jae Rim is able to reconcile Cha Min with his mother. And he carries it a step further by helping his mother get back together with his dad. With that, his dad hands over the reins of the business to Cha Min, so he and and Cha Min's mom can make up for lost time. Cha Min and Jae Rim both finally admit that they love each other. Cha Min gives her the ring he bought her earlier and proposes. And to make it all official, Jae Rim takes him home to meet her family.

A jump forward shows the couple happily married. Jae Rim's family finally welcomes their new sibling. Cha Min is back working for his father and Jae Rim is pursing her dream career in some kind of illustration. And Cha Min brings her hot drinks and massages her sore muscles as she works.. They have their own kind of fairytale and that is true happiness.

My Personal Thoughts and Ratings

'The Potato Lab' is a breezy romantic comedy.  The quirky cast of country researchers is amusing and Kang Tae Oh is absolutely charming as the company executive known for his ability to cut costs without letting his personal feelings interfere.  The romance is sweet and the story is engaging and simple.

I found the humor a bit obvious and cringy, particlarly at the beginning. Parts of the plot felt underdeveloped and too cliche, and the characters' action sometimes lacked consistency. It's not a complex plot with deep character development, but this is a fun drama if you are looking for a sweet, uncomplicated love story. I give 'The Potato Lab' a 7 out of 10.

'The Potato Lab' is a Quirky Romantic comedy about love and community.

Meeting the stars: Lee Sun Bin and Kim Tae Oh

Lead Female Character: Lee Sun Bin as Kim Mi Gyeong

Kim Mi Gyeong had her life turned upside down when she found out her fiance was engaged to another woman and she was fired from her job at Wonhan Retail. Nursing a broken heart, she escapes to the countryside and becomes a researcher at a potato lab. For the past several years, she has put her all into the lab and their mission to grown quality potatoes.  But when their small lab is taken over by her former employer, Mi Gyeong finds the past sneaking into her peaceful life. And when a new director, So Baek Ho, shows up with the mission of cutting costs, Mi Gyeong finds her job and her pride on the line.

But when Baek Ho rents out a room at the guest house she lives in, it is impossible to avoid him.  And she soon discovers that the stiff, serious director she sees in the office is not the only side of Baek Ho. As they work together to improve the company, their relationship quickly begins to blur between professional and personal. But any future they have may be jeopardized when Mi Gyeong finds out that Baek Ho may have played a part in her heartbreak 6 years ago.

Kim Mi Gyeong is hard-working and energetic.  Her role at the lab involves jumping in wherever there is a need, and working hard to find solutions. Although at first she appears to be an employee who is easily replaceable, since she has no unique skills, it is her fiery spirit that has held their team together over the years. Lee Sun Bin has a natural comedic timing and handles this kind of slapstick humor well.  I enjoyed her in this role.

A Safe Peek at The Potato Lab 2025
A Safe Peek at The Potato Lab 2025

Lead Male Character: Kim Tae Oh as So Baek Ho

So Baek Ho started as a scholarship recipient with the Yoon family before working his way up to his present role as Wonhan Retail's innovation director. For years he has handled the company's difficult tasks and lay-offs. So he is not happy to learn that he is being sent into the countryside, by Gi Se, who sees him as competition, to reorganize a small potato lab.

Baek Ho takes a room at the local guest house before he finds out the owner is the brother of the first person he intends to fire. Neither he nor Mi Gyeong is happy with the situation, but they agree to try to keep their professional life separate from what happens at home. And they soon find themselves working together as they make a plan to save the lab and ensure its profitablility. But just as the couple start to fall in love, Baek Ho finds out that he unknowingly caused the events 6 years ago that had brought her so much pain.  And he isn't sure he can forgive himself.

Baek Ho has had to work his way up from the bottom and he has adopted a cold, distant professionalism that has allowed him to make difficult decisions without letting his emotions interfere.  But in his personal life, Baek Ho is not the unfeeling monster he pretends.  And when he finds he hurt Mi Gyeong, he begins to reevaluate how his disregard may hurt innocent people.  This is Kim Tae Oh's first role back since his military service, and I was thrilled to have him back on my screen.  He is swoon-worthy in this role and I think he played it perfectly.

Supporting characters

Lee Hak Joo as Park Gi Se

Park Gi Se is Mi Gyeong's ex-fiance. But he broke up with her to marry the rich daughter of the Wonhan (Yoon) family. When his wife realizes that he never really loved her, she disappears and he hasn't been able to reach her at all. But he has continued to work at the company while he waits for her. And he is shocked when he sees Mi Gyeong again and finds out she works at the lab.

A Comprehensive Look at The Potato Lab 2025

Kim Ga Eun as Lee Ong Ju

Lee Ong Ju is Mi Gyeong's best friend and roommate. She is a romance novelist with an active imagination.  But when she decides to start dating Mi Gyeong's younger brother, Hwan Gyeong, she fears that her new relationship could interfere with her friendship.

A Comprehensive Look at The Potato Lab 2025

Shin Hyun Seung as Kim Hwan Gyeong

Kim Hwan Gyeong is Mi Gyeong's younger brother. Hwan Gyeong runs a country guest house to make a living, and allows Mi Gyeong and Ong Ju to live with him in the main house.  Hwan Gyeong has always had a crush on Ong Ju, but every time he has confessed his feelings for her, she has turned him down.  But when she suddenly shows her interest, he is quick to make their relationship official, even if he has to hide it from his sister.

A Comprehensive Look at The Potato Lab 2025

3 things i loved about the potato Lab

1.

Mi Gyeong's Dad:

We didn't get to see him nearly enough, but I enjoyed Mi Gyeong's dad's character.  Interesting to show a parent who followed his own heart, even if it was difficult for his children to understand.  I wish we could have seen a bit more of how that situation came about.

2.

Baek Ho's Growth:

While I felt like Mi Gyeong didn't grow or change much during the course of this drama, I loved how Baek Ho really reflected on himself and his professional choices.  His character growth made the whole show worthwhile.

3.

Ong Ju:

Ong Ju was so cute as the dirty-minded writer. Her character was silly but strangely endearing. And I liked how she interacted with Mi Gyeong.  They really felt like the kind of old friends who you adore one minute and want to kill in the next!

3 things i didn't love about the potato Lab

1.

Gi Se:

Honestly, Gi Se deserved way worse than he got.  I'm not sure why the show would even try to redeem his character toward the end.  What he did to Mi Gyeong seems pretty unforgiveable to me. And he hasn't exactly treated Baek Ho well either, for someone who is supposed to be his friend.

2.

Hui Jin:

Hui Jin had so many important roles in this drama.  She was Baek Ho's best friend, Ki Se's wife, and the woman who purposely stole Mi Gyeong's fiance.  Yet half the time, you barely remember she exists. I mean, she is supposed to be staying with Baek Ho, and yet with all those scenes in his room, we never see her.  What a waste of a potentially great character.

3.

Baek Ho's Past:

I would have liked to see more about Baek Ho's past.  How did he go from scholarship recipient to Hee Jin's best friend and the Chairwoman's favorite?  It felt like part of Baek Ho's motivation for doing that thankless job was that he felt indebted to the family, but they never showed us enough to understand that.

The Conclusion of 'The Potato Lab'

The Ending

'The Potato Lab' gives us a happy ending all around. There is a potato shortage crisis that allows our lab team to pull together and shine. It also gives Baek Ho and Mi Gyeong the excuse to work together and talk out their feelings. In the end, crisis is averted and our happy couple have made the first steps in reconciliation. And we find out Hui Dong is actually agriculture royalty, so our team should be just fine without Mi Gyeong. Hee Jin finally goes to Gi Se with divorce papers and the pair agree to divorce. And Baek Ho decides to quit his job and strike out on his own with Mi Gyeong by his side.

Three years later, we find our happy couples still together.  Ong Ju and Hwan Gyeong are well, although Ong Ju is suffering from a fatty liver. Mi Gyeong has succeeded in cultivating her own potato variety, and she is giving her old lab team a run for their money.  And she is back in college taking classes.  Baek Ho is working several jobs, including the CFO of the guest house. The final scene shows the lab team making a presentation to the local farmers before Baek Ho and Mi Gyeong come in to help haggle over the price of potatoes.

Plot Summary for 'Melo Movie'

When Movie Meets Reality

A life-long movie enthusiast has worked his way up from acting extra to jaded film critic.  When he is reunited with a young director he had a brief relationship with five years ago, he gets an opportunity to finally explain to her why he was forced to disappear before without a word.  But each of them carry their own scars of love, lonliness, and abandonment.  Now they will be left to decide if they can forgive the mistakes of their pasts and rekindle their relationship.

My Thoughts on 'Melo Movie'

My Personal Insights and Rating

'Melo Movie' is another emotionally intense, slow-burn romance drama. There are some giggles along the way.  The characters are realistically flawed and complex and the themes of childhood fears, trauma and struggling artists are relatable.  The dialogues are well written and natural and the cast does a wonderful job of delivering them with just the right touch of emotional weight.  Also, Kim Jae Wook fans will not want to miss his outstanding performance as the lead's older brother!

But this drama is not the light-hearted rom-com that some may assume at first glance.  For some the pace will seem too slow and heavily based on dialogue rather than action.  While the love story is at the center of this plot, the drama is more about the story of these characters, through their pains and disappointments, finding healing.    I give 'Melo Movie' a 9 out of 10 ramen.
