The Story

A 30 year old supervisor at the Financial Supervisory Service is sent undercover at a securities company where they have detected a suspicious slush fund and a hidden ledger. In her new disguise, she will pose as a 20 year old, fresh high school graduate, hired as a brand new employee. And as she moves into the company dorm and gets to know the other members of her small department, she will form lasting friendships. While also inching her way toward uncovering the truth about the company CEO and his illegal activities.

The Leads

Park Shin Hye as Hong Geum Bo

Hong Geum Bo is a hard-working supervisor at Financial Supervisory Service (FSS). Her job is to find companies committing financial crimes. But when she goes up against a powerful enemy at Hanmin Securities Office, her informant ends up dead and the evidence goes missing. So she goes undercover, as a 20 year old entry-level, recent high school graduate at Hanmin. Not only does her mission require her  to work as a rookie responsible fore all the department grunt work, but also to live in the company dorms with three roommates.

As Geum Bo bonds with her new roommates and co-workers, she begins to put together a team of co-conspirators who are willing to help her get justice. But her cover is blown when her former college boyfriend shows up as the new CEO. Now she will have to convince him to join her cause if she is going to redeem her reputation and expose the truth.

Hong Geum Bo is nicknamed the Witch of Yeouido. At FSS, she is feared and disliked by her co-workers and unconcerned with having any private relationships with them. But when she is given a fresh start at Hanmin, she learns that friendship is a lot more important than she had ever realized. Park Shin Hye is a great actress who has really come into her own recently. She handled the duality of Geum Bo's cut-throat work mentality and her supposed 20 year old naivete with a smooth skill that gave this series it's backbone.

Go Kyung Pyo as Sin Jeong U

Sin Jeong U dated Geum Bo throughout college and they started their careers working at the same company. But when Geum Bo put justice in front of her own career success, Jeong U turned his back on her. After their break up,  he moved overseas and becomes a  corporate raider. He is hired by the owner of Hanmin to be the new CEO, partly so that if something goes wrong, the company would have a scapegoat.

When Jeong U first meets Geum Bo, he is sure that he is his old girlfriend, but she insists that she is just a young, high school graduate who has never met him in her life. And at first, Jeong U grudgingly believes her. But as time goes on, he becomes more convinced that she is his first love. Eventually, Geum Bo confesses and talks Jeong U into joining their cause for justice.

Sin Jeong U is a businessman who lives his life by the numbers. He is more concerned with the bottom line and making money than justice. But as he watches Geum Bo and her new friends take a stand against economic crime and abuse, he begins to change his perspective. I always love Go Kyung Pyo, and this role was no real challenge for him. He did great with the character, but I wish they had spent more time developing Jeong U. Maybe if they had given into the temptation to throw in a bit of romance, we would have gotten to see him shape the role more.

The Supporting Characters

Ha Yoong Kyoung as Ko Bok Hui

Ko Bok Hui is a senior office staff member who is the assistant to the CEO. In the dorms, she is known as the Queen Bee because she has been there the longest and insists on having everything her way. In the beginning, she dislikes Geum Bo and helps her boss spy on her, but over time, Geum Bo wins her over. And her questionable background becomes a real asset for their team.

 Cho Han Gyeol as Albert

Cho Han Gyeol is the grandson of Hanmin's owner, Chairman Kang. While Albert's father dreams of seeing his son inherit the company, Albert has no real interest in it all. He runs the small Risk Management division where Geum Bo is assigned. But he spends his days watching old VHS tapes and dreaming of being a director. Albert develops a crush on Geum Bo, but Geum Bo is far to busy to bother with romance, besides the fact that their age difference is much bigger than he realizes, thanks to her secret identity.

Kim Won Hae as Yun Jae Beom

Yun Jae Beom is Geum Bo's mentor and boss at FSS. He has known Geum Bo since she was younger and he often acts like a father-figure to her. It is his idea to put Geum Bo at Hanmin, and Jae Beom meets with her regularly through clandestine appointments and ridiculous disguises. He has his own tragic backstory that comes to light toward the end of the show.

Things I Like

The Roommates

The whole roommate scenario in this drama is well done. Each roommate has a distinct and interesting personality, and each one goes through moments of growth and redemption. I also loved the interactions with each of the roommates and Bom. Again, none of their relationships with her were the same, but they all offered bits of humor and warmth.

Spy Comedy

This is certainly not the only comic spy drama I have seen, but it is a relatively uncommon genre. I also appreciated that they stayed away from over the top, slap stick humor for more subtle laughs. The jokes about Geum Bo looking too tired for a 20 year old never got old. Also, the meeting between Geum Bo and Jae Beom were always good for a little laugh.

90's Vibe

Like its Netflix predecessor 'Typhoon Family', this drama managed to bring in the 90's vibe without wearing out the schtick. Oversized cell phones and VHS tapes make an appropriate appearance, so it almost feels like an easter egg hung to play spot the nostalgia.

Series Details

Jeong U

Honestly, Go Kyung Pyo just felt wasted in this drama. His character never really has an opportunity to take shape and help us get to know him. It almost feels wrong to even call him a lead. His significance as Geum Bo's ex is important, but his place in the current story seems like an afterthought.

Mi Suk

Mi Suk kind of fades from view once Bom is discovered and the rest of the team spends time bonding at work. Mi Suk is the only one who works at a branch instead of the main headquarters. Luckily she doesn't totally disappear, but her role is much less, the closer they get to exposing the truth.

 Abacus

Ok, this is another silly observation,, but was I the only one wondering if an abacus is the only heavy, psuedo-weapon type thing in their apartment. There are at least a few times where the roommates fear an intruder, and they always reach for that dumb abacus. It just made me chuckle after the first time.

The Ending

'Undercover Miss Hong' gives us happy ending for the whole team. Chairman Kang and his right hand Ju Ran have their crimes exposed and go to prison. Albert's father Jung Il takes over as the new CEO. While Albert has gone back to his dreams of writing a screenplay and living with Yong Gi, who started a video game company.

Geum Bo clears her name and returns to her job at FSS, while still keeping in contact with all of her new friends. But before leaving Hanmin, she makes sure to get closure with both Albert and Jeong U.

Bok Hui does spend some time in jail, but when she is released, she opens a private investigation firm out of the back of a hair salon run by Geum Bo's sister, the real Jang Mi. Nora goes to France and studies pastry making, while Mi Suk works her way up to assistant branch manager. And Jeong U leaves Korea to work in the US, doing what he loves best.

The drama finishes as the 90s come to a close and the new millenium looms. The roommates get together to break into their old apartment for one last trip down memory lane before the dorm is demolished. And just as it seems like Geum Bo is settled back in her original job, we find out that Jae Bom has another undercover assignment for her. It appears she may have finally discovered her true skills and I suspect Bok Hui's agency will come in quite handy.

Should I Watch

I really loved this drama.  It has a great cast with amazing chemistry.  So much so that fans have had a hard time moving on now that it is finished.  This drama is strong all around.  There is plenty of romance, some political conspiracy, and lots of comical moments that lighten the mood and give depth to the characters.  The cinematography provides some beautiful scenery, from North Korea and Switzerland.  I guess it does ask you to suspend your disbelief from time to time, but the charm of the story makes it worthwhile.  Definitely give this one a try.  I think you'll be happy you did.  I give Crash Landing On You a 5 out of 5 ramen.
