The Story

This drama surprised me. I hadn't heard much about it going in, so my expectations weren't very high. But I was surprised at how much I enjoyed it. Melo is My Nature is a romantic drama about three thirty year old women who have been friends since college. They are roommates who all work in some form of the entertainment industry. Through these women we experience success, love, and loss, with an overarching theme that being thirty is just a weird age. At thirty, we are too old to be considered a young person and not experienced enough in life to be wise and mature.
The script is smart and character driven. The dialogue itself is more important than any of the events. The characters are realistically flawed, and therefore relatable as a whole. The storylines are modern and down to earth and the relationships are complex. It's not meant to be light and fluffy but it also isn't over exaggerated drama. I liked the subtlety of the stories and the way their relationships impacted their lives.

Should I Watch

I would definitely say this one isn't for everyone, but I would also say it has been severely underrated. It's made for people who enjoy analyzing deep conversations and aren't put off by a slower moving plot without a lot of action. From friendship to careers to love, it's all understated. I personally love relatable characters in sincere relationships, so it worked well for me. If character driven dialogue is your thing, this one is a gem. I give it 3 ramen out of 5

Air Dates: July 22 - September 10, 2019

Episodes: 16

Where to Watch: Viki

Genre: Romantic Drama

Starring: Ong Seong Wu and Kim Hyang Gi

The Story

Moment of Eighteen is a high school coming-of-age story about first love and the challenges of life at eighteen.  The story follows a group of students who are in the same homeroom class of a local high school.  This is not the cute rom-com variety of school dramas.  While there are some sweet moments, this show tackles some serious issues like bullying, gender identity, academic cheating, and abuse, both physical and emotional.  The stories revolve around the many kinds of relationship that are a part of life for teenagers; peers, teachers, parents, and romantic.

A couple personal notes from me.  Firstly, every time I watch a high school drama like this, I am so thankful that I am not a mom in Korea.  Seriously, the mean mom culture is like living the nightmare of middle school all over again!  Peer pressure is as hard on the moms as is it is on the students.  Scary stuff!  Secondly, this series showcases some very dysfunctional relationships.  About halfway through the episodes, I found myself wondering if any of them had any healthy relationships in their lives.  Of course, I know that a drama is not a drama without…well, drama, but I feel like this one went above and beyond.     It just made me a little sad.

The Leads

Yoo Soo-Bin, played by Kim Hyang-Gi (Revenge Note) is an average student whose mom has ambitious goals for her future.  While Soo-Bin excels in certain areas, she is not as ambitious or successful as her mom would hope.  When a shy, quiet boy shows up in her class, she is instantly drawn to him.  As the two of them begin to develop a relationship, they support each other through the difficult situations they each face.

Soo-Bin is surprisingly independent for someone with an overprotective mother.  She sees her mom’s constant striving on her behalf, but she also has plans of her own.  Up until this point, she has always kept that spirit of rebellion to herself, but when her mom finds out about her new relationship, and forbids them from seeing each other, Soo-Bin finally begins to learn how to speak up for herself.  It’s fun to watch her grow through the process, and she handles it with compassion and grace, instead of being defiant and rude.

Choi Joon-Woo, played by Ong Seong-Wu (Singer, debut actor), is a student who is forced to tranfer to a new school after getting into trouble at his old school.  He is an awkward loner who lives alone because his single mom has a job in another town. As he builds relationships with his classmates, Joon-Woo gains the confidence to explore who he really is and what his dreams are.

Ong Seong-Wu won both the Best New Actor and Hallyu Star Award at the 2019 Korea Drama Awards.  I love the idea of giving new actors more reserved characters.  It gives them a chance to develop their acting skills and helps them avoid the pitfall of many new actors to overact.  Don’t get me wrong.  He did an excellent job playing this role and I was happy to see him get recognized.  I think this has given him a jumpstart to many more tv roles, and I look forward to seeing him again.

Ma Hwi-Young, played by Shin Seung-Ho (Love Alarm, A-Teen) is technically the second lead, although I think it was pretty obvious from the very start that he didn’t really stand a chance.  He and Soo-Bin have been friends since they were children and everyone considers him her boyfriend.  Well, everyone except Soo-Bin.  He is the class president and the number one student in the school.  At first, he seems like a model student who is smart and helpful.  As the series continues, we find out that there are issues of control and insecurity that drive him to act that way.  As opposed to Soo-Bin who isn’t interested in the success her mom tries to push on her, Hwi- Young is determined to be at the top at any cost.  While we watch Joon-Woo grow and soar through self-discovery, Hwi-Young sinks deeper and deeper into the mistakes he makes.

The Supporting Characters

Kang Ki-Young (What’s Wrong with Secretary Kim, I’m Not a Robot) plays the interim homeroom teacher, Oh Han-Kyeol.  I love this actor and it’s always fun to see him, but this role was great for him.  He is believable and genuine as the new teacher who just wants to develop relationships and see his students grow.  He has a small side story involving a love interest, but they don’t get enough screen time together to see much real growth.  It’s in his interactions with the students that he really excels.  He takes Joon-Woo in from the very beginning and works hard to bring him out of his shell.  And even though Hwi-Young challenges his authority and belittles him, Mr. Oh is the only adult who is there for him when his mistakes finally come back to haunt him.

Shim Yi-Young (Thirty But Seventeen, Five Enough) wins the best parent award, although unfortunately the competition was not stiff.  I find this actress to be so cute and quirky, and she brought a great sweetness to this role.  She plays Joon-Woo’s single mom.  She is supportive and positive, even though their life has been far from easy.  For all of her easy-going nature, she is no door mat, and isn’t afraid to challenge the mean moms when pushed into a corner.

The Ending

The ending was only alright for me.  I didn’t feel like any of the storylines got tied up well.  I guess if this is about a “Moment of Eighteen”, it does what it promised.  We get a good picture of a day in the life of a group of teenagers, but I would like to have known how at least some of the stories ended up.  Do Joon-Woo and Soo-Bin manage to stay together, even through the summer?  Does Soo-Bin’s mom ever accept their relationship?  Does Hwi-Young manage to get his life back on track?  Does Jung O-Je come to terms with his sexuality?  For me, there was too much unanswered.  It made the drama feel unfinished.  I enjoyed watching, but the ending left me wanting more.

Should I Watch

If you like high school dramas, this one does a good job of breaking the usual mold.  The young cast captured the essence of teenage life.  If you are someone who doesn’t like incomplete storylines, you might not get the closure you would hope for.  But if you are a Ong Seong-Wu fan, this is a performance you shouldn’t miss.  He portrays all the awkward sweetness of first love with quiet honesty.  I give this one a 2 out of 5 ramen.

Hotel del Luna Full Review

Hotel del Luna Full Review

Series Details

Air Dates: July 13 - September 1, 2019

Episodes: 16

Where to Watch: Netflix

Genre: Romantic Fantasy

Starring: IU and Yeo Jin Goo

The Story

For me, this one has everything. Hotel Del Luna is the perfect, spooky, fall show. First of all, I don’t know how you can take about this show without talking about the costuming and cinematography. It is just gorgeous to look at. The soundtrack is hauntingly beautiful, with plenty of familiar names, and even includes a surprise unreleased song by IU herself. The cast has a strong chemistry, not just with the romantic leads, but on all levels of relationships. The plot is a sweeping story of love and revenge that travels through centuries.

Hotel Del Luna is a hotel for the dead, who are unable to move on to the afterlife because of unfinished business here on earth. As new “guests” check in to the hotel, the hotel staff, who are also ghosts in limbo, try to help them take care of their issue so that, with the help of the Grim Reaper, they can send them on their way. The stories cover many motives and emotions. Hotel Del Luna is ultimately a place of bittersweet goodbyes, as problems resolve and death becomes final.

The Leads

Jang Man-Wol, played by IU (Scarlet Heart Ryeo, My Mister) unwittingly became the hotel owner 1000 years ago, by drinking a potion given to her by one of the twelve faces of God. Since that time, her life has been suspended between life and death. Her unfinished business involves the man she loved, who betrayed her all those years ago. She is bitter and temperamental. She doesn’t get involved with the hotel guests and their stories unless the guest is rich and she can gain some profit by stepping in. Her hobbies are buying expensive clothes and jewelry and drinking champagne. Then one day, a new, human manager arrives on the scene. He helps her to learn how to feel again, and eventually leads her to the end of her long-awaited story.

Man-Wol has allowed greed to cover up the hurt she has carried through time. It is easy to pity what she has been through, and how it made her into the woman she is. As her full story begins to unfold, the others who were part of her past begin to appear before her in their new lives. With a little help from the hotel bartender, their memories reveal pieces of the story that had been unknown to Man-Wol until now.

The new manager breaks down the walls that Mal-Wol has spent centuries building up. Slowly she begin to trust him, and eventually love him. He also encourages her to open her heart more to her guests and help them, not just when there is personal gain. As she moves closer to her own final death she learns what is like to live again.

Koo Chan-Sung, played by Yeo Jin-Goo (The Crowned Clown, Absolute Boyfriend) is the man who becomes the manager at Hotel Del Luna because his father sold him to Man-Wol in a negotiation for his own life. The hotel has always had a human manager to handle earthly business matters, so Chan-Sung is one in a chain of many, but he is also very unique. He has been sent specifically as the one whose final duty is to send Man-Wol herself on her journey to the afterlife and close the doors of Hotel Del Luna forever.

Chan-Sung’s calm and loyal personality is the perfect foil to Man-Wol’s distrustful tantrums. I often found myself laughing out loud at their lively conversations, which helped to balance out their awareness of how their story would eventually need to play out. Despite his initial hesitation, Chan-Sung’s feelings for her develop quickly and deeply. His truest desire is for her to find her final peace, even knowing it will cost him his own happiness.

The Supporting Characters

This cast has a large group of great secondary characters, which is part of why I loved this cast so much. So many of them deserve mention here. Within the hotel staff, we get to know three characters. There is the bartender, the room manager, and the bell hop. Each one of them have their own stories, which unfold slowly through the course of the show. Kim Sun-Bi is the bartender, played by Shin Jung-Keun (Encounter, Mr. Sunshine). He was an unfairly disgraced scholar looking to redeem his damaged reputation. Choi Se-Hee is the room manager, played by Bae Hae-Sun (Wok of Love, While You Were Sleeping) whose baby daughter was killed by her selfish in-laws. She is waiting to witness the death of the final living heir to their family line. The bellhop, Ji Hyun-Joong played by P.O. died trying to take care of his blind sister. He is now waiting to be the one who escorts her to the afterlife. He also has a cute love story with Kim Yoo-Na, who is played by Kang Mi-Na. She is the ghost in the body of a human who is also the manager in training. Her role in the hotel is mostly to remind Chan-Sung that if he steps out of line, he can be replaced

Chan-Sung has a group of friends who give the cast a bit of humanness. Sanchez, played by Cho Hyun-Chul, is as devoted a friend as Chan-Sung himself, even after losing the love of his life. And Park Yoo-Na (SKY Castle and The Package) as Lee Mi-Ra and Lee Tae-Sun (Suits, Prison Playbook) asYeon-Woo both played a major part to the story during their past lives.

And representing from the supernatural realms are Seo Yi-Sook (The Banker, My Secret, Terrius) as God Mago and Kang Hong-Suk (Doctor Prisoner, What's Wrong with Secretary Kim)  as the Grim Reaper. We are told God Mago has twelve faces. We don’t meet them all, but we get a good taste of about six. Each one is over the top and it’s fun to see the quirkiness she brings to them. The Grim Reaper is a man of few words, but his dark, benevolent presence gives a good gravity to his scenes.

The Ending

I’ve already said that Hotel Del Luna is a place of bittersweet goodbyes, so the ending really shouldn’t be a surprise to any of us. Having said that, I am a sucker for a happy ending so I did have one created in my active imagination. (Attention Hong sisters, in case you need help with your next one.) Since Man-Wol wasn’t actually dead, I thought they may just turn her “human clock” back on and let her live out her days with Chan-Sung, but no one consulted me and that is not the ending we got. Even so, it was tragic and well-done. In the big picture, their sad ending is better suited. Chan-Sung completes his mission of seeing Man-Wol off and closes the Hotel Del Luna forever. But not before making sure that all of the hotel guests and staff also find their own endings.

The only piece of the story that seemed a little off for me was the final story of Man-Wol and her revenge story with Ko Choeng-Myung. Of course, in the end, we never have the full picture without getting all sides of the story. It turns out that he only betrayed her to save her life and as a promise to her adopted brother, Yeon-Woo. While Man-Wol has waited for him to show up at the hotel, he has been there by her side the whole time, as a firefly, watching over her and waiting for her forgiveness. You would think that after waiting 1000 years for him, there would be more to the conclusion than a short scene that lacks any of the unfulfilled love they felt. She tells him that she is finally empty, and you can feel that she mean it. I mean, sure it’s been 1000 years and she has finally found love again with Chan-Sung but doesn’t the man at least deserve a hug? I did like the finality of their scene on the bridge. Choeng-Myung holds his hand out to her and she is face to face with the choice of just going with him, since she knows she will be going soon anyway, or keeping her promise and going back to Chan-Sung and the Hotel Del Luna. In the choice between Choeng-Myung and Chan-Sung she still picks Chan-Sung.

The last two scenes have gotten a lot of attention. First is the scene at the park with Chan-Sung, Man-Wol and our three hotel staffers. For those who need your happy ending, this is it. I have read a lot of debate about whether it was actually happening or just Chan-Sung’s imagination, but really does it make a difference? Even if it isn’t happening right this second, it is obvious that these people are tied together by fate. At some point, a scene like this will happen. Isn’t that enough? And then in the last seconds we see The Hotel Blue Moon with a cameo from the new owner, Kim Soo-Hyun. People were sure this was a clue to a promise for a second season, but the Hong sisters have denied any such plans. At any rate, this scene tells us that the story does go on and the dead continue to hang out and seek closure.

Should I Watch

As I already said, I feel like Hotel Del Luna has a bit of everything. It’s well produced and the stories are fun. It has just enough spooky ghostness to put us in the mood for fall. There is romance and revenge. There are crimes to be solved and adventures to be had. It does have its share of bittersweet moments, so I guess if you are the kind of person who absolutely needs everyone to live happily ever after, this might not be the one for you. But other than that, this one is well worth the time.  As I said, I loved it, so I'm giving it 5 out of 5 ramen.

My Personal Thoughts and Ratings

'Love Me' is a slice of life romantic drama.  It focuses on a family that is forced to pick up the pieces after a severe trauma. The family relationships are complex and raw. This drama manages to be heartwarming and gentle while also being  painfully honest and realistic. The message is that life and love are messy, but there is joy in the moments. I enjoyed the way the love stories were spread across all three family members, giving us great pictures of love at different life stages.

But this drama is not everyone's cup of tea. It is slow moving and tackles some difficult and painful issues. At times it is emotionally heavy and the characters are not always likable or relatable. This is not the sunshine and rainbows of the rom-com world. But I liked the emotional rollercoaster of these troubled characters and their journey to acceptance.  I give 'Love Me' an 8 out of 10 ramen.

Meeting the stars: Seo Hyun Jin and Chang Ryul

Seo Hyun Jin as Seo Jun Gyeong

Seo Jun Gyeong is a successful OBGYN who runs a practice with her best friend. But, although her professional life looks perfect and put together, her personal life is complicated and dysfunctional. Her family's struggles revolve around an accident that happened seven years ago, causing their mother to lose one of her legs. Jun Gyeong feels responsible for the accident, since their mother was on her way to see Jun Gyeong when it happened. And her mother's anger and resentment toward the world after the accident only make Jun Gyeong's guilt worse.

But when her mother suddenly passes away, the whole family is left struggling between grief and relief. In the midst of this turmoil, Jun Gyeong meets a handsome neighbor who she is attracted to, even though he is not all like her ideal type. And the more she gets to know him, the more conflicted she feels. But as she begins to heal from her loss, Jun Gyeong begins to learn the value of living life to the fullest and embracing happiness over expectations.

Seo Jun Gyeong is emotionally guarded and cautious. She has channeled all her energy into professional success so that she can avoid difficult personal relationships. But meeting Do Hyeon will help her to break down some of those walls and learn to be vulnerable. Seo Hyun Jin  is great in these emotionally complex roles. She has a quiet grace that can easily seem distant and cold. But she also connects well to deep emotion and can portray those feelings to the audience. I thought she was a perfect fit for this role.

A Safe Peek at Love Me 2026
A Safe Peek at Love Me 2026

Chang Ryul as Ju Do Hyeon

Ju Do Hyeon is a musician who writes music for commercial purposes. His erratic working hours give him an unconventional life style, which can make him seem lazy or professionally unsuccessful. Do Hyeon notices Jun Gyeong in his neighborhood and finally gets the nerve to approach her. He sees her sadness and lonliness, and it makes him feel a connection to her. And as they spend time together, he will continue to fall for her.

But Ju Do Hyeon has a secret that he doesn't like to share. He has a son with an ex-girlfriend. Although they are not still together as a couple, Do Hyeon is eager to be a father to his son. And when his son, Daniel, comes to stay with Do Hyeon, Do Hyeon will be pulled between his jealous son and the woman he has come to love.

Ju Do Hyeon has been hurt in the past, and this has made him nervous about romantic relationships. He also knows that being a single dad is seen as a flaw by many. Because of this, Do Hyeon doesn't often share how he is really feeling, and this will be a constant cause of friction between he and Jun Gyeong.  I'm not very familiar with Chang Ryul's past works, so I was surprised by how much I enjoyed his performance in this drama. I loved his calm stability and the warmth he portrayed. I hope to see him as the leading man in more dramas to come.

Supporting characters

Yoo Jae Myung as Seo Jin Ho

Seo Jin Ho is Jun Gyeong's father. He spent the last seven years as the caretaker for their mother, who lost a leg in an accident. But following her death, Jin Ho is lonely and aimless, until he meets Ja Yeong, who is the tour guide on his trip to Jeju. And slowly, he will give himself permission to live the rest of his life to the fullest, as his wife would have wanted.

A Comprehensive Look at Love Me 2026

Lee Si Woo as Seo Jun Seo

Seo Jun Seo is Jun Gyeong's younger brother. He is a graduate student who is studying to become a lecturer. But he is drifting through his life without really knowing what he wants. When his best friend finally confesses her feelings to him, he suddenly begins to gain confidence. And with her by his side, his life starts to find meaning and purpose.

A Comprehensive Look at Love Me 2026

Yoon Se Ah as Jin Ja Yeong

Jin Ja Yeong is a tour guide who meets Jin Ho when he takes the trip that would have been his anniversary present to his wife. As a widow herself, she understands his pain better than anyone, and the pair bond as she helps him find healing.

A Comprehensive Look at Love Me 2026

3 Things I Loved About 'Love Me'

1.

3 Love Stories:

I really liked the multi-generational love stories in this drama. We get three love stories all wrapped up into one 12-episode drama. And each story offers its own charms and frustrations. It was nice to see each family member face their struggles and take steps toward healing.

2.

Jin Ja Yeong:

Even though she isn't one of the direct family members, I really enjoyed Jin Ja Yeong's character. Her sunny disposition in the face of struggles, past and present, was beautifully portrayed. I loved how open and direct she was with Jin Ho. After all he had been through, I really think this approach is the only way someone could have gotten through to him.

3.

Su Jin and Hyeong Jun:

I loved Jun Gyeong's best friends, Su Jin and Hyeong Jun. Each of them brought their own wisdom and support to her. I especially loved the big brother relationship Jun Gyeong had with Hyeong Jun. Their heart to hearts were touching, and I enjoyed their sincere affection and comraderie.

3 Things I Didn't Love About 'Love Me'

1.

Poor Daniel:

Seriously, this poor kid. He is used as a weapon by his parents, mostly his mother. And when everything hits the fan, everyone is so worried about their own feelings that no one spares a thought for what this could do to their son. The only one he can really talk to is Jun Gyeong. If he was going to be stuck living far away with just his mom, I wish we could have seen her at least make an attempt to become the loving parent he deserves.

2.

No Emotional Resolution:

It would have been nice to see some growth and self-reflection from them. In the end, Jun Gyeong and Do Hyeon are looking at adoption, but we haven't seen them make any progress in their communication issues. Jin Ho, who suffered the emotional toll of caring from his sick wife, is now responsible for another sick partner. Of course, he loves her, but how is he going to keep himself from suffering a similar burnout? And Jun Seo is still so immature that he can't make his own apology without being fed the lines. For a show about healing, I would have liked to see more actual progress.

3.

The Same Roller Coaster:

It was weird how this drama gave every character the same high points and low points. As if life is some formula, with evenly paced ups and downs. All three of them fall in love at the same time, share a beautiful honeymoon period, and then they all get slammed down by the realities of life. to which they all seem to rally.

The Conclusion of 'Love Me'

The Ending

'Love Me' gives us a happy ending where the family members are all still working on themselves and their relationships. Jun Seo finally reads Hye On's book and realizes that he was the only one putting pressure on himself to be something he isn't. Ja Yeong is diagnosed with early-onset dimensia. Although at first, she decides to put herself into a healthcare facility, Jun Seo finds her and convinces her to come home so they can live out their lives together.

The fact that Daniel is not really Do Hyeon's son finally comes to light for everyone, including Daniel himself. And once Yun Ju realizes she has lost Do Hyeon, she decides to take Daniel back to Germany. Luckily Daniel and Do Hyeon get a chance to talk and Do Hyeon makes it clear that Daniel is his son, regardless of what a paternity test says.

After a period apart, Do Hyeon picks up Jun Gyeong and Su Jin after a night of drinking. Do Hyeon begins to understand how much he has hurt Jun Gyeong, and he sleeps on the floor by her side all night. In the morning, they talk out their problems and agree to move forward with their wedding. They also decide to move into the family home instead of letting Jun Ho sell it.

The final scene is a birthday party for Ja Yeong. And we get a little update on each family member. Jin Ho tells the family about Ja Yeong's illness and they all gather around her to offer their love and support. She and Jin Ho continue to live at the campsite, enjoying the slow tempo of country life. Hye On has become a successful author and Jun Seo has become a metereologist. And Jun Gyeong and Do Hyeon are preparing for their wedding and looking into adoption.

My Personal Thoughts and Ratings

'Can This Love be Translated' is a romantic drama with suprisingly dark themes of trauma and mental health. The filming of this drama is beautiful and the characters are interesting. The leads have a cute chemistry and the Hong sisters deliver their usual complex dialogue. Go Youn Jung does a nice job of portraying this dual role and Sota Fukushi is adorable.

Although this drama starts as a sweet rom-com, it takes a much darker, unexpected turn. The story can be confusing at times and the plot does get repetitive. Unfortunately, both actors become almost inconseqential in the second half as Go Youn Jung's journey takes over the plotline. And some fans felt that the actress' mental health struggles were not realistically conveyed. But I liked the interesting story and the complex characters.  I give 'Can This Love be Translated' an 8 out of 10 ramen.

Meeting the stars: Kim Seon Ho and Go Youn Jung

Kim Seon Ho as Ju Ho Jin

Ju Ho Jin is an interpretor who speaks eight languages. He meets a struggling actress named Cha Mu Hui, by chance in Japan, and the pair spend a day together before parting ways suddenly. Later he learns that the actress suffered a serious accident while filming a movie and is in a coma. He goes to see her in the hospital a few times, but stops visiting when he hears she has woken up.

So, when Ho Jin agrees to work as a translator for an upcoming reality dating show, he is shocked to find out Cha Mu Hui is the star. Working closely with her, he begins to develop a deep affection for the actress. He becomes torn between professionalism and his desire to protect Mu Hui. And when he discovers that she is suffering from a serious mental health issue following her last role and the accident, he becomes even more determined to help her keep her secret and shield her from any pain or embarrassment.

Ju Ho Jin is cynical and distant. His distrust of love stems from a difficult relationship with his own parents and the fact that the one woman he loved, Sin Ji Seon, ended up engaged to his own brother. But despite his own misgivings, he can't help falling for Mu Hui. Kim Seon Ho has a bright, kind smile that lends itself to these more sensitive, sincere roles. I would have liked to see a bit more character growth from Ho Jin, but Kim Seon Ho played the part well and I think he fit the role.

Go Youn Jung as Cha Mu Hui

Cha Mu Hui was an aspiring actress when she traveled to Japan to meet her cheating ex-boyfriend. By chance, she meets Ho Jin, and asks him to help translate a conversation between her and her ex's new wife. When they finish, Ho Jin sticks around to make sure she is okay. But just before dinner, he suddenly runs off, leaving her alone. Once she returns home, she lands a role as a zombie in a horror movie. But on the last day of filming, she is seriously hurt doing a stunt and falls into a coma. And when she wakes up, she suddenly finds she has become famous.

Although physically, she makes a full recovery, Mu Hui suffers from hallucinations about her character, Do Ra Mi. But she ignores her mental health and hides it from everyone. When she agrees to appear on a reality dating show, she is surprised to see Ho Jin there as the series translator.

As she begins filming, her mental health worsens, and Ho Jin learns about what is happening. And while Mu Hui is uncomfortable with Ho Jin knowing her secret, he promises not to tell anyone. As he supports her , she begins to rely more and more on his kindness. And eventually she finds herself in love with him. But Ra Mi will start taking control of Mu Hui's life, and Ra Mi hopes to keep her and Ho Jin apart.

Cha Mu Hui's problems don't actually start with her accident. We soon learn that she has carried a dark secret about the death of her father at the hands of her mother since childhood. And the pain of that secret has left her fractured and unstable. Go Youn Jung is really growing as an actress and this role allowed her to stretch her skills. I thought she did a fantastic job with this role.

Supporting characters

Fukushi Sota as Kurosawa Hiro

Kurosawa Hiro is a Japanese actor. He is originally cast on the reality series and Mu Hui is chosen as his co-star because they seem like an unlikely pair. At first Hiro doesn't like Mu Hui and he does things to make it difficult for her. But he soon finds himself falling for her charms, although Mu Hui doesn't return his feelings.

Lee Yi Dam as Sin Ji Seon

Sin Ji Seon is a tv producer who was Ho Jin's first love. She was engaged to Ho Jin's brother. But when they have a falling out, Ji Seon breaks up with him and shows up on location for the show Ho Jin is working on. At first, she is determined to win Ho Jin back, but when she realizes Ho Jin has moved on, she falls for Mu Hui's manager, Yong U.

Choi Woo Sung as Kim Yong U

Kim Yong U is Mu Hui's manager. He is good at his job, and does his best to keep Mu Hui going. When Ji Seon shows up on set, Yong U is immediately attracting her. And even though he can tell she is interested in Ho Jin, Yong U sets out to win her heart.

3 Things I Loved About 'Can This Love be Translated'

1.

Do Ra Mi:

I really enjoyed Go Youn Jung in this dual role. And I loved the chaotic energy of her "alter-ego" Ra Mi.  While the issue of Mu Hui's mental health is obviously no laughing matter, it was fun that Ra Mi's character gave us a bit of silly levity. And it was interesting the way that Ho Jin ended up establishing a very different relationship with both parts of Mu Hui's personality.

2.

Scenery:

The on-site locations for this drama were just breathtaking. It was nice that we got to do a bit of globe-hopping along with the characters, and I enjoyed taking it all in. It gave a unique dimension to the series. And there was something about the laid back feel of the Canadian half of the series contrasted with the drama of Italy that seemed to fit the scenery around them.

3.

Kim Jeong Hwan:

Kim Won Hae is one of those actors it's always fun to see. And I loved his role as the supportive but absent-minded "uncle". His scenes with Mu Hui were  sweet and funny. And the banter between him and Ho Jin took some of the distant coolness from Ho Jin's character.

3 Things I Didn't Love About 'Can This Love be Translated'

1.

Kurosawa Hiro:

I'm not super familiar with Fukushi Sota, but I thought his character in this drama was so cute. I really wish we had seen more of him in his own capacity, instead of just a third wheel for the lead couple. In the beginning it seemed like we might get to know him better, but he factored in less and less as the series progressed.

2.

Mu Hui's Family:

I understand that we need a villain, but wow, Mu Hui's family are really something. The fact that they blamed Mu Hui for something that was in no way her fault was cruel. And instead of sitting down and talking it out with Mu Hui, they go to Ho Jin to expose Mu Hui's past, with no consideration of her feelings.

3.

Ji Seon:

I'm always irritated by ex-girlfriends that just show up expecting their ex to take them back. After years of parading her relationship with Ho Jin's brother in front of him, did she really think he would just start dating her again? Honestly I thought Yong U deserved better than her!

The Conclusion of 'Can This Love be Translated'

The Ending

'Can This Love be Translated' gets to a happy ending eventually. But first, Ho Jin gets some closure to his feelings for Ji Seon by confessing that he had liked her back when they first met. They leave their talk happy and comfortable with each other. Yong U proposes to Ji Seon and they decide to move to the UK together.

Hiro and Mu Hui finish filming, and although he confesses to liking her at the end of the show, they are both content to stay as friend. Hiro goes home to Japan where he breaks free of his rom-com mold to take on some other kinds of roles he has always wanted to try.

Mu Hui finally remembers everything that happened while she was Ra Mi and that Ho Jin stayed with her through it all. At first she is embarassed, but Ho Jin confesses his love for her and she understands that it is okay. Ra Mi seems to disappear for good, and Mu Hui realizes that she was actually a representation of her mother.

And things could have ended there. But instead, Ho Jin finds out from Mu Hui's family that her mother is still alive and living abroad. When Mu Hui finds out, she decides to go meet her. And she wants to break up with Ho Jin until she has dealt with her past. But they both understand this break up is just temporary. And sure enough, in the final scene, Mu Hui returns to Korea, after having talked to her mom, and meets Ho Jin at an observatory. Mu Hui uses her phone translator to tell Ho Jin how much she missed him in other language and they kiss as the roof above opens to the starry sky.
