The Story

Let Me Be Your Knight - Full Review

A lead singer of a famous band begins sleepwalking due to a troubled relationship with his father and the day to day pressure of living in the lime light.  His agency hires a private live-in doctor to treat his condition and keep him safe.  But a crazy case of mistaken identity leads them to hire the doctor's twin sister, who lies about who she is because she needs the money.  But as she gets to know not just Yoon Tae In, but all the members of the band, she is torn between her desire to stay with them and her need to tell the truth.

Let Me Be Your Knight - Full Review

Jung In Sun as In Yoon Joo/Kang Sun Jun

In Yoon Joo has lost her life savings and is being chased down by loan sharks.  Things are pretty dire until she is offered a large sum of money to work as a live in therapist for a famous idol who has started sleepwalking.  The only problem is they think she is actually her twin sister, who is a well-known doctor specializing in sleep issues.  If she can keep her identity secret for one month, she can pay off her debt and no one needs to ever know the truth.  But as she spends time getting to know Yoon Tae In, she can't help but be attracted to him.  Will he ever be able to forgive her if he finds out that she has been lying to him this whole time?

Let Me Be Your Knight - Full Review

In Yoon Joo is enthusiastic and optimistic.  Her dream is to buy the house she grew up in and be reunited with her twin sister, who was adopted by an American family. She never set out to pretend to be someone she wasn't and she sincerely wants to help Tae In.  Jung In Sun did a fine job acting in this drama, but I'm not sure she was a good fit for the character.  She seemed more like a house mother than the kind of person two band members would fall in love with.  I know that Jung In Sun is capable of romantic chemistry, but I just didn't feel it much with this drama.

Lee Jun Young as Yoon Tae In

As the lead singer of the famous pop group Luna, Yoon Tae In lives under constant pressure.  Because of this stress, he has started sleepwalking.  He is totally against the idea of having a live-in doctor, but his agency insists.  But to his surprise, the treatments begin to work.  And even more surpising, he begins to develop feelings for "Dr. Kang".  Eager to keep her with him, he begins to embrace their sessions together.  But the more he tries to draw her closer, the farther away the doctor becomes.

Let Me Be Your Knight - Full Review

Yoon Tae In carries the weight of the world on his shoulders, between his troubled relationship with his father and his need to make sure that Luna succeeds.  All of this has made him cold and withdrawn.  He doesn't have anyone he can lean on, until he meets Dr. Kang.  She becomes a much-needed life-line that he never wants to live without.  Lee Jun Young continues to grow as an actor, but his last two roles have been very similar.  I worry that he will get type casted as a cold, unfeeling idol.  I hope he can break out into some more challenging and mature roles as time goes on.

Jang Dong Joo as Seo Woo Yeon

Seo Woo Yeon is the guitarist for Luna.  He meets Yoon Joo by chance in a bookstore before she moves into the house.  He is immediately attracted to her and can't believe his luck when she shows up at their dorm.  Even though he notices the connection between her and Tae In, he tries to win her heart.

JR as Lee Shin

Lee Shin plays the bass for Luna.  He has been secretly dating a divorced actress, who he met while appearing on her radio program.  But when word gets out, he is forced to make some difficult choices.  He is young and naive enough to think that he can still have it all, but his fans and band mates are not as thrilled with the idea.

Shin He Young as Chae Ji Yeon

Chae Ji Yeon is the former actress that Shin has been dating.  Since her divorce, her career has been on hold.  Her fans and agency all treat her like a has-been, but she still hopes to work her way back into the industry.  She is older than Shin and their age difference only complicates their desire to date.

Things I Liked

♥ Fun Music

There is something fun about taking musicians from different bands and letting them work together, both acting and making new music.  These idol dramas usually have fun, upbeat soundtracks that fit the mood of the shows.  The song "Beautiful Breakup" has been recorded as a single by the drama actors, making Luna at least a semi-real band!

♥ Side Stories

One of the strong elements of this drama was the time they took to give each band member their own story.  It's easy for these characters to all get lumped into the same story, so there is just the lead singer and everyone else.  It was a welcome change to have the chance to get to know each of them individually.

 ♥ Ga  On

So, I am familiar with AB6IX as a group, but I don't know the individual band memebers.  But Kim Dong Hyun as Ga On was such a wonderfully sweet character.  His sunny disposition and fierce loyalty made him a highlight of this drama.  He felt like the emotional anchor who held everyone together.

Things I Didn't Like

Posing as a Doctor

I don't seem to be alone in feeling some general discomfort with the whole premise of this drama.  For Yoon Joo to pretend to be a doctor is not just a small white lie or harmless case of mistaken identity.  This is playing around with someone's health and welfare.  And the fact that she succeeded in "curing" him seems to belittle the seriousness of the problem.

Stalker Story

While we did see a couple scenes with PR team member Hong Jae Eun that hinted something might be off with her, the whole sudden kidnapping plot seemed to come out of thin air.  A few extra scenes to build this storyline would have made it seem much smoother and given it more context.  It would have made more sense to me if there was a more obvious build up.

Band Interaction

Although we hear them talk about a time when the band members were close and spent time together, this drama really starts with them so distant that it's hard to imagine them as friends.  A slower drifting apart might have made this element more believable and interesting.  If they hadn't said anything, I would have assumed they had never really gotten along that well.  And when Dr. Kang asks how they get along, the managers seem to gloss over it as if there was some secret there.  That only added to my general impression that their relationships had always been rocky.

Let Me Be Your Knight - Full Review

The Ending

"Let Me Be Your Knight" ends on a happy, upbeat note.  After Yoon Joo saves Tae In from the crazy PR stalker lady, he realizes her feelings for him were sincere and forgives her for lying.  But then Yoon Joo breaks it to him that she is going to go back to America with her sister for awhile, and figure out what she wants to do with her life.  While she doesn't make any promises, Tae In says he will wait for her.  And he uses that time to put his energy into the band.  Luna works together to make a new album with input from everybody.  They go back to their roots and play smaller more intimate concerts that help them remember why they became musicians in the first place.  They also each take time to pursue their own personal goals.  Dong Joo opens his own music studio, Ga On goes to college, Shin creates his own radio show, and Ji Sung takes an acting role.  The final scene shows Yoon Joo back in Korea, when she gets a call that her family home is under new ownership and looking for a renter.  She rushes there and finds Tae In with the keys.  And I'm pretty sure they will live happily ever after!

Let Me Be Your Knight - Unspoiled Review

"Let Me Be Your Knight" is similar to last year's idol drama "Imitation", and even has the same lead.  This style of drama is becoming popular and they provide a great bridge between K-Pop and Kdrama as well as some nice OSTs.  And because they are idols playing idols, they also give these young musicians a chance to branch into acting without going too far outside of their comfort zones.  The stories are light, simple, and entertaining, if  you're in the mood for something that is fun without being overly unique or complex. It's sweet and predictable and not afraid to rest on time honored tropes. I give "Let Me Be Your Knight" an 7 out of 10 ramen.

Our Beloved Summer - Unspoiled Review

"Our Beloved Summer" is a nostalgic slow-burn romance.  I really love this kind of drama that takes its time and concentrates on character development.  If slow moving plots frustrate you, then this one probably isn't what you're looking for.  The mood of this series is light but the storylines have a depth that draws you in and the chemistry between the leads and secondary cast is fun and touching. If you are looking for a slow-paced, warm romantic drama with sincere characters, this is a great choice.  I give "Our Beloved Summer" a 10 out of 10 ramen.

Choi Wook Shik as Choi Woong

As a high school student, Choi Woong had the lowest grades in the school, but he loved reading and drawing.  As an adult, he turned his love of drawing into a stable, successful career as an architectural artist.  His break up with Yeon Soo was the darkest time in his life and he has no wish to relive that horrible experience.  But when his best friend comes to him with the idea of a sequel to their high school documentary, he is forced to at least consider the idea for his friend's sake.  And knowing that Yeon Soo would hate the idea of a reunion even more than him makes him support it.  Spending time with Yeon Soo again, Woong quickly realizes that he is still in love with her, and the question that has haunted him for 5 years may be the key to whether they should try again; why did she break up with him in the first place?

Our Beloved Summer - Full Review

Choi Woong hides his abandonment issues by spending time alone so that he has nothing to lose.  He has never told anyone that he remembers being left by his birth father or that the nightmares from that trauma keep him from sleeping at night.  Yeon Soo is the only person he was ever willing to take a risk with, and when she left him with no explanation, the pain was almost unbearable.  Choi Wook Shik was perfect for this role as a sensitive artist with deep feelings about love and loss.  This was his first starring role since 2017 and the part was exactly right for him.  The emotional depth he was able to convey made me love and understand this character.

Kim Da Mi as Gook Yeon Soo

Gook Yeon Soo was the driven top student in high school.  Now she works as a publicist for a small company.  She isn't at all interested in spending time with Woong again or filming another documentary.  But when Woong offers to participate in her next big event if she does the film, she is left with no choice but to give in.  In the beginning, she hopes to get the sequel done quickly without letting Woong know she still has feelings for him.  The more time she spends with him, the harder it is for her to hide the truth. And when he suggests they just try to be friends, she knows she wants more.  If she can be honest and put aside her pride, she is sure she will be able to win him back.

Our Beloved Summer - Full Review

Gook Yeon Soo grew up poor and alone, with only her grandmother to support her.  She learned early that pride was her best defense.  When she found out that her grandmother was sick, she broke up with Woong because she was too proud to tell him about her troubles or lean on him for help.  But Woong was the only one who ever understood that under that cold, confident exterior was a vulnerable girl who just wanted to be loved and accepted.  Kim Da Mi captured Yeon Soo's brash confidence while giving us glimpses into the gentle sensitivity that hid behind her eyes.  I enjoyed her in this role and felt like she was able to show good character development.

Kim Sung Chul as Kim Ji Woong

Kim Ji Woong is Woong's best friend and adopted "brother".  The two of them grew up together and Woong's parents took Ji Woong under their wing when his mother was absent.  Ji Woong has always had a crush on Yeon Soo, but he had never told anyone.  Watching the filming of the documentary when he was in high school inspired Ji Woong to go into a filming career because he was drawn to the idea of being a professional observer.  He is in charge of producing the sequel his friends are starring in.

Roh Jeong Eui as NJ

NJ is a famous idol who meets Woong when  she becomes interested in his art work.  She develops a crush on him and makes excuses to see him whenever she gets a chance.  She and Ji Woong bond over their unrequited loves and become friends.  NJ is candidly self-aware which makes her character endearing and relateable.

Park Jin Joo as Lee Sol Yi

Lee Sol Yi is best friends with Yeon Soo. Sol Yi made enough money to open her own cafe, but business is slow and she is struggling to stay open.  She becomes friends with Woong's manager, Eun Ho, and the two commiserate together about their friends' problems.  Eventually, there are some romantic sparks between them.

Things I Liked

♥ "Parents"

I love this subtle theme that parents are made through love not blood.  Both of the biological parents we see in this series, Ji Woong's mom and Woong's birth dad, walked away from their responsibility as parents and hurt their children terribly by their actions.  But on the other side of that, we have Woong's "adopted" parents and Yeon Soo's grandmother, who chose to be loving and supportive to the children given to them.  Woong and Yeon Soo both have such special relationships with their caretakers and I enjoyed watching their sweet interactions.

♥ Chae Ran's Confession

I really felt bad at the very end that Ji Woong never got to make his confession and tell Yeon Soo how he felt.  So it seemed somehow appropriate that Chae Ran made a point of being completely honest about her feelings for him.  It seemed to even the scale in some funny cosmic way.  And I prefer to believe that her confession was just the start of a wonderful relationship for the two of them, free from the ghosts of the past that had haunted Ji Woong all this time.

 ♥ Time Shifts

Sometime time shifts can get messy and confusing, but I really felt like they worked well in this drama.  I enjoyed going back and seeing how everything started, and I never had to figure out which time we were in.  It was clear and the background gave the stories good foundation without feeling disjointed from the main plot.

Our Beloved Summer - Full Review

Things I Didn't Like

Ji Woong's Story

Ji Woong had a couple great storylines.  It almost seems like a waste that so much time was spent on the anti-climatic love triangle that never really has much impact on the story as a whole.  He and Woong have a week or so of awkward discomfort and then everything goes back to how it was.  I would have much rather seen more exploration of his relationships with his mother and Woong's parents.  There was more that could have been done with those plots to make Ji Woong more of a central character than he was.

Clueless Yeon Soo

Ok.  So Ji Woong was in love with Yeon Soo in high school and followed her around with a love sick puppy look on his face and Yeon Soo never even got a hint of it?  I know that Yeon Soo has her insecurities, but that seems like a stretch.  And 5 years later he is still yearning after her.  I would have liked it better if Yeon Soo had at least figured it out at the end so they could have taken a moment to appreciate each other.  It feels kind of wrong that she is still the only one in the dark on this one.

More Noo Ah

The story of Woong's rival artist, Noo Ah felt rushed and a bit incomplete.  I think his confession at the end that he actually did steal Woong's work would have had more impact if we had seen more about the evolution of their relationship.  Were they ever friends?  Did Noo Ah really have cause for his jealousy or was he just being overly sensitive?  Kwak Dong Yeon is such a great actor.  It seems like they should have given him a few more scenes to tell the full story.

Our Beloved Summer - Full Review

The Ending

Well, we get our happy ending with this one, and a couple tentative hopeful ones.  Eun Ho is working at the cafe with Sol Yi while Woong is studying in Paris.  Sol Yi has completely fallen for Eun Ho but she can't tell for sure if he is just pretending not to notice or if he isn't interested.  But their last scene together, Eun Ho takes the straightforward approach and asks her on a date.  Love is definitely in the air for these two.  Chae Ran finally tells Ji Woong that she likes him.  He seems surprised at first and then a bit embarrassed, but there is also a glint of interest that hints at a future for them as well.  As for our leads, the writers play with us a little bit with the whole Paris story.  But in the end, Woong goes away, which he needs to do for his own growth, and Yeon Soo stays home to be with her grandmother and wait for Woong to finish.  They show some quick ups and downs of distance relationships before Woong surprises Yeon Soo and shows up to tell her in person that he loves her.  The final scene shows them sitting on the couch, filming the end of their documentary, and with big smiles, they share the news that they are married.  This ending is a perfect warm and comfortable wrap up that fits the tone of the drama well and ties everything up neatly.

"Nevertheless" is a modern romantic drama that is provocative and, at times, frustrating.  This is not a sweet love story full of cute, couple moments.  Instead it focuses on two young people who are on a crash course to disaster with a toxic, unhealthy relationship.  That doesn't mean there is no chemistry, or even potential, but it's not always easy to watch.  If you dislike manipulative male leads, you should probably just skip this one all together.  But if you are looking for a mature romantic drama with annoyingly flawed yet realistic characters, you might give it a try.   I give "Nevertheless" a 7 out of 10 ramen.

The Story

Nevertheless - Full Review

A university art student, who had her heart broken by the art teacher she was dating, is no longer interested in dating or falling in love.  But one day she meets a handsome fellow student known as the campus flirt.  He is a player who is kind and friendly to everyone, but keeps a safe emotional distance.  Despite herself, Yoo Na Bi finds she is drawn to him, but how will she ever know if his feelings towards her are sincere or all just part of a game?

Han So Hee as Yoo Na Bi

Being betrayed by her mentor and first love, Yoo Na Bi no longer believes in true love or idealic realtionships.  She is an art student at the local university who creates beautiful sculptures and dreams of using her talents to study abroad.  But when she meets a handsome and mysterious fellow student, she can't help but be drawn in by his charm and seductive style.  They begin a casual, undefined relationship, but Na Bi has no way of knowing if he really likes her or is just looking for a short-term fling.  And Jae Eon's ex-girlfriend, who always seems close-at-hand isn't making things any easier.  Now she will have to decide whether she is willing to risk following her heart and having it broken again.

Nevertheless - Full Review

Yoo Na Bi is a jaded yet surprisingly naive character.  Despite her best intentions, she falls for Jae Eon quickly and completely.  Even the safe devotion of her childhood friend, Do Hyuk, isn't enough to sway her wandering heart.  Han So Hee plays this role well.  As the big-eyed, hopeless romantic, it's easy to see how she got herself into this predicament.  But I found her inability to understand and be honest with herself frustrating at times.

Song Kang as Park Jae Eon

Park Jae Eon is an art student who specializes in metal sculpture.  He also has a strange obsession with butterflies.  So when he meets a beautiful fellow art student whose name literally means butterfly, he is intrigued by her.  What starts out for him as just another casual fling brings up new feelings that he isn't used to. Emotional commitment is something he has never been good at so he is suprised when he finds himself suddenly  wanting to give it a try.  But old habits die hard and he has a long way to go if he is going to convince Na Bi that his feelings for her are sincere.

Nevertheless - Full Review

Park Jae Eon grew up as the son of an absentee mother who is a weatlthy and famous actress.  While he likely inherited his love and talent for art from her, he never got the love and support that would make him emotionally stable and mature.  As a result, Jae Eon is cold and closed off  He is popular and surrounded by friends, as long as they don't try to get too close.  I think it is Na Bi's vulnerability that is most attractive to him.  This was an unusal role for Song Kang and it was good to see him try something new.  But I missed his more heartfelt acting.  This character, while tragic, lacked the emotional dimension to feel relatable or generate sympathy.

Chae Jong Hyeop as Yang Do Hyuk

Yang Do Hyuk is Na Bi's oldest friend.  They grew up together before losing contact when she moved to Seoul.  The two meet up again by chance and Do Hyuk, who never got over his first childhood crush, is hoping they can start dating.  He is a chef who is famous on Youtube and plans to reopen his family restaurant in the small seaside town where he and Na Bi were raised.

Lee Yeol Eum as Yoon Seol Ah

Yoon Seol Ah has just returned from studying abroad.  She and Jae Eon dated at one time and she has never really gotten over him.  She isn't all pleased when she notices Jae Eon's interest in Na Bi and she does everything she can to keep them apart.

Yang Hye Ji as Oh Bit Na

Oh Bit Na is also an art student at the university where Jae Eon and Na Bi study.  She is fiercely independant and free-spirited but she is surprised when a drunken mistake reveals her attraction to one of her closest friends.

Things I Liked

♥ Art

Using a university art school as a setting provides a great opportunity to show some beautiful and interesting art pieces.  All of the sculptures were great to look at, and even the bracelet Jae Eon made for Na Bi was unique and noteworthy.  I love when dramas use the setting to promote certain scenery and this was a perfect example of that.  I want to cry right along with Na Bi when her amazing sculpture is crushed into pieces.

♥ Nam Kyu Hyun

The character of Nam Kyu Hyun was such a great addition to this drama and I loved his relationship with Bit Na.  So I was extremely disappointed when a personal scandal halfway through the drama caused the production to team to edit his parts out.  I am not commenting on the scandal itself but only the fact that his honest and down to earth character was a welcome contrast to Jae Eon and I would have enjoyed seeing more of he and Bit Na together.

♥  Mom Backstories

I really enjoyed the way both Jae Eon and Na Bi had mothers with backstories that gave some understanding into their own emotional development.  To show glimpses of their personalities and fears through the stories of their moms made it more interesting than if they had just told us about them with no context.

Nevertheless - Full Review

Things I Didn't Like

Yoon Seol Ah

Yoon Seol Ah was a mysterious character.  It is easy to see that she and Jae Eon had dated at one time and that she still has feelings for him.  But I couldn't understand Jae Eon's lingering attachment to her.  Why was he the one to take her to her doctor's appointments?  And why does he rush to her side and put up with her obsessive personality even though there is no romantic interest in her at all?  I wanted a little more back story about how they got to where they are and what were Jae Eon's real feelings about her.

Yang Do Hyuk

Na Bi's treatment of Do Hyuk really bothered me.  It's not just that she chose Jae Eon over him, although I know lots of people questioned that choice.  But this is her oldest friends who she obviously cares a lot about.  And she knew that while he is a great friend, he never made her heart flutter.  I understand that a part of her really wanted him to be the answer, but deep down she knew he wasn't.  He was an adorable guy who deserved better.  And for those who are interested, I did hear that the original webtoon does give him a better ending.

Butterflies

Maybe this one is just me but I swear, I heard so much about those dumb butterflies that I was expecting something really spectacular.  Don't get me wrong.  Having a whole room in your house full of trees and free-roaming butterflies is definitely eccentric, but I was expected at least a couple shots of stunning butterflies or something.  The reality was much more mundane than I had anticipated.

The Ending

So...this ending.  There are a lot of disagreements about whether or not this is a happy ending, so I will skip any classification.  Let's just break it down.  After some panic about having to recreate Na Bi's project we come to the end of the semester.  Sol and Ji Wan are an official campus couple and seem happier than ever.   Bit Na and Kyun Hyun are also still together and all smiles.  Later at dinner, Kyun Hyun confesses that he has liked Bit Na for years.  At the art show, everyone admires Sol and Na Bi's art, and even the professor praises Na Bi.  Do Hyuk shows up with flowers to show his support but Na Bi keeps waiting for Jae Eon to show up.  It seems like Na Bi's classmates are the only ones excited to see poor Do Hyuk.  When Jae Eon finally comes, he sees Do Hyuk there and tries to leave.  Na Bi pushes the flowers back into Do Hyuk's arms to chase after him, basically making her choice obvious.  But Jae Eon is already gone.  Everyone goes out to dinner but the overwhelming couple vibe depresses Na Bi, so she ducks out and heads back to see her piece one more time.  Jae Eon is there and asks her for one more chance and after telling him how much she hates him, she agrees, even though she says she knows she will regret it.  They kiss while Jae Eon sheds tears of relief.  The final scene shows them together and smiling.  Some girls try to give Jae Eon their number but he politely refuses.  Na Bi joins him and as they walk, Na Bi spots Do Hyuk through a window.  She hesitates for just a second before walking away with Jae Eon.  And that's the end, folks.

Kim Yoo Jung  as Hong Chun Ki

As a child, Hong Chun Ki was blind, but she still dreamed of becoming a famous painter like her father.  So when she miraculously gains her eyesight, she immediately enrolls at the local art academy.  Now, after years of study, she is a talented artist who cares for her mentally ill father.  But those close to her worry that painting will destroy her mental health the same way it did her father.  A request from the King to recreate her father's greatest piece of art and help capture the evil spirit, Ma Wang, only adds to their concern.  But when Chun Ki realizes that this project could not only save the stability of their country but also the life of the man she has loved since she was a child, she can't refuse.

Lovers of the Red Sky - Full Review

Hong Chun Ki is passionate and determined.  Her father's health and her own blindness left her very lonely as a child.  But one stranger's kindness left an unforgettable mark on her heart.  When she meets him again as adults, she understands that they must be fated to to be together.  Kim Yoo Jung is well-suited for this character.  Her lively charm shines through as Chun Ki and we see the most character development in the series as Chun Ki grows as an artist and as a woman.

Ahn Hyo Seop as Ha Ram

Ha Ram comes from a family blessed by the water god.  He is chosen to take part in the royal rain ritual used to stop drought.  But when the ritual errupts into chaos, Ha Ram ends up losing his sight and being possessed by the evil spirit, Ma Wang.  While the spirit lies dormant for years, no one realizes he is there, but attempts to capture him in a divine vessel make his situation more urgent.  Now the spirit plans to fully take over Ha Ram's mind and body so that he can rule the kingdom.  The only thing missing are his eyes, which have been given to Chun Ki.  As Ha Ram finds out about the evil that lives inside him, he is ready to sacrifice himself for the good of the kingdom.  But Chun Ki insists on finding a way to trap the spirit and free Ha Ram to live a life with her.

Lovers of the Red Sky - Full Review

Ha Ram is reserved and intelligent.  Believing that his father died at the hands of the royal family, he has lived his life waiting for a chance to take revenge on them.  But his plans falter when he discovers that the king was as much of a victim as his father.  Ha Ram has always loved Chun Ki, but he knows that his revenge will end in his own death so he tries to keep her at a distance, for her own sake.  Lucky for him, Chun Ki doesn't give up easily.  Ahn Hyo Seop is a good actor, but I found this particular role very flat.  There is very little character development and even the chemistry he shares with Kim Yoo Jung early in the drama seems to fizzle out as the series goes on.

Prince Lee Yul is the youngest of the King's sons.  He loves art and culture and has a warm personality.  He has grown up with Ha Ram, and the two are friends.  Lee Yul falls in love with Chun Ki, but it doesn't take him long to realize that her heart already belongs to Ha Ram.

Kwak Shi Yang as Prince Yi Hoo

Prince Yi Hoo is the middle son of the King.  His older brother, the Crown Prince, has been ill for years and Yi Hoo hopes to inherit the crown from his father.  Yi Hoo is responsible for helping release Ma Wang and he bears a scar from the fire that is the evil spirits mark.  Yi Hoo plans to use his connection with Ma Wang to take power and feed his greed.

Kim Kwang Gyu as Choi Won Ho

Choi Won Ho runs the art academy where Chun Ki studies.  He was friends with her father and now takes care of her, since he friend is no longer capable.  He tries to protect Chun Ki so she won't lose her sanity to art in the same way as her father.  But his paternal instincts are no match for the stubborn young woman Chun Ki has become.

Things I Liked

♥ Guardian Spirits

I loved the character of Sam Shin and Ho Ryung.  The costumes and graphics surrounding these two characters were the strongest in the drama and their magical presence gave a good break from the main storyline.  It was also fun to watch Ho Ryung and Chun Ki form an awkward and slightly tenuous friendship.  And while Sam Shin was involved in the story from the very beginning, it was sweet to watch Ho Ryung get swept up in the human love story and try to protect the two of them.

♥ Folklore

The fantasy concept for this drama was very interesting and I liked how they were able to incorporate real traditional folklore into the story.  Each of the stories brought a new dimension to the overall plot and it was fun to learn some of the lesser known tales, like Hwacha.  I never felt like these stories were out of place within the context of the drama as a whole.

♥ Baekgyu Institute "Family"

Another friendship I enjoyed was the interaction between Chun Ki and her art academy "family", especially Young Wook and Painter Jung.  Their familiar camaraderie was touching, and seeing how protective all of them were of Chun Ki seemed very natural.  I looked forward to the scenes where the group of them interacted together.  And the lengths that Chun Ki went to to save them from Prince Yi Hoo made perfect sense.

Lovers of the Red Sky - Full Review

Things I Didn't Like

Woman Artist

I don't know a lot about artists during this time period, but it doesn't take much to imagine that women artists were incredibly rare, if not unheard of.  And that would be proven by the fact that Chun Ki is the only woman in the academy or the art competition.  And yet I only heard one passing comment that anyone found it noteworthy.  That seems strange to me.  It seems like more should have been made about how rare it was for a woman to be a painter at all, let alone a "divine" painter.

Crown Prince

Okay, I really don't understand the point of the Crown Prince in this drama at all.  We hear about him a few times and know that he is very ill.  But we never see him once they all grow up, and his place in the overall story is pretty non-existent.  The two younger princes would have been vying for the throne whether he was in the picture or not.  Actually having Lee Yul named Crown Prince earlier would have only fueled Yi Hoo's jealousy more.  I just really hate unnecessary characters who we never really see anyway.

Blindness

The blindness element of this drama is not handled well at all.  First of all, for someone who spent some of the formative years of her life blind, Chun Ki seems strangely clumsy at dealing with Ha Ram's lack of sight.  In both speech and actions, she seems to forget that sight isn't something to be taken for granted.  But maybe that is partly because Ha Ram didn't really act like someone who couldn't see.  Wandering the town alone and moonlight horseback riding were treated as normal occurences.  While he would have learned to live without sight, there should have still been times when certain tasks would have required some extra effort.

Lovers of the Red Sky - Full Review

The Ending

"Lovers of the Red Sky" ends with a hard-fought happily ever after.  Ha Ram shows up at the sealing ceremony but Ma Wang has managed to take full power over him.  As Chun Ki rushes to put the finishing touches on the painting, the demon confronts her and takes back his eyes, leaving her blind once again.  With the help of Hwacha and her father, she finishes the painting, but Ma Wang seems impossible to beat, now that he has his eyes again.  In the end, the spirit is defeated, but it cost the lives of both Mi Soo the shaman and Sam Shin.  Flash forward five years, to Ha Ram and Chun Ki's birthday.  They are living in the country with their young son.  The Baekgyu artists and the now Crown Prince, Lee Yul, make the trip to visit.  Everyone is pretty much the same with the exception of Lee Yul and Painter Jung's promotions.  Ha Ram and Chun Ki make a trip back to the peach orchard for a romantic birthday date, which ends once again with them running away from the angry owner.  In a strange last scene, we see Prince Yi Hoo, who is still alive and in prison, leading a coup against Lee Yul and his supporters.  The final credits roll as we see a bloody fight breaking out in the palace.

Lovers of the Red Sky - Unspoiled Review

"Lovers of the Red Sky" is a fantasy historical romance with a unique concept.  This series leans heavily into the magical fairytale style elements, so if you like your historical dramas to be full of true historical events and famous figures, you may be looking in the wrong place.   The plot is largely predictable, so don't expect any huge surprises.  The love story is sweet and the supporting cast is strong.  As is often the case with fantasy dramas, there are points where the storyline defies logic or the rules suddenly change without explanation.  Repetition and flashbacks also drag down the tempo at times.  But if you are looking for a fun tale of good vs. evil and true love in a historical setting,  this one is not without it's charms. I give "Lovers of the Red Sky" a 7 out of 10 ramen.

Monthly Magazine Home - Unspoiled Review

"Monthly Magazine Home" is a sweet romantic comedy about first love and the importance of having a home.  Unlike the norm for the genre,  this one leans much more heavily toward the comedy.  Exaggerated humor and acting combine with a simple and fairly predictable plot to make this a great drama if you are looking for something light as a filler.  But don't expect anything particularly deep or unique.  And if you don't enjoy over the top comedy and acting, I would skip this one.    I give "Monthly Magazine Home" an 6 out of 10 ramen.

Monthly Magazine Home - Full Review

A rich CEO of a monthly magazine hires a struggling writer to be his personal PR representative.  Yoo Ja Sung is rude, arrogant and impossible to work for.  As a real estate mogul who has made his fortune buying and selling houses, he knows everything about the practical aspects of the market, but he knows nothing about how to make a house into a home.  Na Young Won dreams of owning her own home some day, where she can find comfort and security.  But she has a hard time seeing a house as simply a way to make a profit.  Now the two of them must learn to work together and hopefully,  teach each other something in the process

Kim Ji Suk  as Yoo Ja Sung

Yoo Ja Sung worked his way up from nothing to become a wealthy and famous real estate mogul.  But in such a busy career, he has never taken the time to date or settle down and build a real home.  When he hires a new personal PR writer who dreams of the warmth of hearth and home, he is challenged to see life from a new, more personal, perspective.

Monthly Magazine Home - Full Review

Yoo Ja Sung is selfish and rude, but he also has an innocent charm that becomes more appararant as the drama goes along.  Glimpses into his long-time relationship with Shin Gyeom shows that he is loyal and affectionate with those he is close to.  Kim Ji Suk has excellent comedic timing and does this kind of exagerated humor well.  This role is perfect for his style of acting and he handled it well, but I would have liked to see more serious character development, as well.  Both the  character of Ja Sung and the actor Kim Ji Suk had the potential for more depth and emotion.

Jung So Min as Na Young Won

Na Young Won is a struggling writer looking for work until a former co-worker calls her about a job at her magazine.  What she doesn't tell her is that her new boss is an unreasonable perfectionist who is impossible to work with.  He is also the one who evicted her from her last apartment.  But Young Won is determined to make this job work, no matter how difficult her boss is.  And the more time she spends with him, the more she realizes that Ja Sung is kinder than most people think. While she hopes to learn from his real estate expertise, she is hoping to show him there is more to owning a home than making a profit.

Monthly Magazine Home - Full Review

Na Young Won's life fell apart when her parents got scammed and lost the chance to finally own a home of their own.  Carrying that scar through life, she writes a blog about the value of making a home where you can find comfort and security.   Although Ja Sung's methods lack warmth and emotion, she understands that his knowledge is valuable and she appreciates him for that.  Jung So Min is one of my favorite actresses, and part of why I was so excited to watch this drama, but I don't feel like this role fit her style.  As an actress, her strength lies in emotion and deep character development, and she seemed almost out of place in this silly, over the top style of comedy.

Supporting Characters

Monthly Magazine Home - Full Review

Jung Gun Joo as Shin Gyeom

Shin Gyeom has known Ja Sung since Ja Sung tutored him in high school.  He is a talented photographer from a rich family who is trying to find his own path through life.  Ja Sung hires him to take pictures for the magazine and Gyeom agrees to work for him until he decides to take off on his next adventure.  Gyeom has a crush on Young Won and is heart-broken when he finds out that she and Ja Sung have feelings for each other.

Kim Won Hae as Choi Go

Choi Go is the editor-in-chief at Monthly House.  He has worked for the company for years and helps the business run smoothly.  He is married and spends his life catering to the needs of his kids and his demanding wife.  He lives in an apartment that is supposed to be redeveloped, but the project keeps getting put on hold while the residents are stuck waiting for better living conditions.

Chae Jung An as Yeo Eui Joo

Yeo Eui Joo is an editor at Mothly House.  She has a rich father who abandoned her for a younger wife, which makes her distrustful of all men.  She has vowed that she will never get married.  But when she discovers she has feelings for her co-worker, Nam Sang Soon, she begins to re-examine her life decisions.

Things I Liked

♥ Voiceovers

Though a bit out of place for the tone of the rest of the drama, I enjoyed the voiceovers that reflected on the idea of the value of a home from Young Won's perspective.  These gave a warm, personal touch to the episodes and gave a heart-warming message.  The contrast between a house and a home is an interesting over-arching theme for this drama, and the voiceovers did a nice job of highlighting this.

♥ Yeo Eui Joo

Yeo Eui Joon probably had the best character development in this whole drama.  In the beginning, she is portrayed as obsessed with money and having an affair with an older rich man, who actually turns out to be her father.  As the story goes on, and the truth is revealed, we learn that there is much more to her story than the quick conclusion we are led to believe.  I admit that I strongly disliked her character through the first half and was pleasantly surprised to find her much more endearing as it went on.

♥ Ja Sung and Gyeom

I enjoyed the sweet, brother-like affection between Gyeom and Ja Sung.  Their quiet support for each other is touching with just enough awkwardness to make it realistic.  Maybe the fact that this is the only understated relationship in the whole drama made it stand out even more, but I looked forward to their heart to heart moments.

Things I Didn't Like

Over the Top

Pretty much everthing about this drama was over the top and a bit tiresome at times.  From the acting, to the humor, and even the more serious emotional scenes; all of them were taken to the extreme.  As someone who embraces subtlety in my dramas, this definitely got irritating.  Maybe comedy fans liked these moments more than me, but I think it could have been toned way down.

STOP

Okay, I just have to say, please stop with the "STOP".  This ridiculous tagline was silly from the beginning, but by the end, I really wanted to scream anytime anyone used it.  Again, a little restraint would have made it only vaguely frustrating, but the repetitive use of it was enough to drive me crazy.

Kye Joo Hee

Has there even been a more invisible character than Kye Joo Hee?  The masked intern drifts through this drama with no real character development.  The only thing we find out about her personally is that she lives in a basement apartment.  While she wanders around delivering gifts and messages for her shy co-worker, we see no trace of a personality or storyline.  It just seems a shame to introduce a character that has no real purpose or role.  At least she finally becomes an editor in the end.  I guess that is something.

The Ending

"Monthly Magazine Home" comes in for a messy and unsatifying ending that left many viewers frustrated.  Young Won finally finds her father, which is great, until she realizes he is the one who scammed Ja Sung out of all his money years before.  So she plans a final date for them, and when the date is finished she confesses everything to Ja Sung and breaks up with him.  Then she disappears for 3 years.   Though most of the supporting characters did get their happy ever afters.  After a 3 month time jump, Sang Soon and Eui Joo got their dream wedding. And Eui Joo even got to invite her father, so their relationship seems to be on the mend.  Gyeom is finally moving on to pursue his dream of studying Fine Arts, although he has given up studying abroad to stay close to home.  Chan will be taking his place as head photographer, and he and Mi Ra seem to be heading toward a romantic relationship.  A final 3 year jump shows us that Editor Choi's son has graduated and their home is finally going to be re-developed.  And now back to our leads.  Ja Sung sees a Youtuber who he suspects is Young Won.  He goes to find her and is disappointed when it turns out to be someone else.  But after forgetting his keys, he goes back to discover Young Won there after all.  The two take a walk, talking casually as she shows him the home she had built.  The drama ends on a voice-over asking viewers how they like their home.  There is no clear indication of what the future holds for our leads.  Whether friends or lovers, I guess the ending is up to your imagination.

Should I Watch

Monthly Magazine Home - Unspoiled Review

"Monthly Magazine Home" is a sweet romantic comedy about first love and the importance of having a home.  Unlike the norm for the genre,  this one leans much more heavily toward the comedy.  Exagerrated humor and acting combine with a simple and fairly predictable plot to make this a great drama if you are looking for something light as a filler.  But don't expect anything particularly deep or unique.  And if you don't enjoy over the top comedy and acting, I would skip this one.    I give "Monthly Magazine Home" an 6 out of 10 ramen.

Should I Watch

Imitation - Unspoiled Review

"Imitation" is a simple romantic comedy that tackles some of the serious questions about idol life and the music industry.  While the problems about obsessive fans and corrupt management are real-life issues, this drama is more concerned with shedding light on them than offering any realistic solutions.  But as long as you are tuning in for the entertainment value, this shouldn't present a problem.  The story of idols trying to date isn't exactly unique or unpredicatable, but the love stories are cute and the music is fun, especially if you are familiar with any of the all-star idol cast.      I give "Imitation" a 7 out of 10 ramen.
