The Story

May I Help You - Full Review

A new funeral director has magical hands that will bring her clients back to life long enough to ask one final favor before they leave their loved ones.  If she can grant 21 wishes, she will fulfill her task and her hands will lose their magical ability.  When a young man who runs an errand company with his uncle accidentally finds out about her secret ability, she enlists his help in granting wishes.  Along the way, they will each find healing for their own personal loss and purpose for their futures.

May I Help You - Full Review

Lee Hye Ri as Baek Dong Joo

Baek Dong Joo wants a job that doesn't require any special skills, so she applies to be a Funeral Director.  But when she touches her first corpse, the boy comes to life and begs her to help him.  Her uncle, who is a priest, explains that she has the homework of helping fulfill the final wishes of 21 people before this special magic power will go away.  The only problem is that her dad still thinks she is studying for the civil service exam.  So the secret remains between her and her uncle, until a young man who owns an errand business accidentally finds out.  Thankful for someone to help her, she begins to lean on him more and more.  But when she finds out there is a connection between him and her first funeral, she worries that he may never forgive her.

May I Help You - Full Review

Baek Dong Joo is bright and optimistic.  Once she gets over the fear, she loves creating a happy and healing atmosphere for the people she will be meeting in the coffin room.  Lee Hye Ri has a hilarious way of adding silly over-exuberance to her roles.  While it is true that many of her characters have the same, silly edge, I think she continues to grow as an actress.  There is something to be said for the fact that her loud clumsiness makes me smile every time.

Lee Jun Young as Kim Tae Hee

Kim Tae Hee was a successful doctor before his little brother, Jun Ho, was killed in a tragic traffic accident.  After that, he decides to help his uncle run his errand business.  The stress-free environment of doing small daily jobs gives him time to heal and process his loss.  But when he meets Dong Joo and learns about what she is doing for people, he jumps in to help her.  And slowly he begins to remember how healing it can be to help others heal.  And as his feelings for Dong Joo grow, he begins to allow himself to be happy again and starts to dream of a future.

May I Help You - Full Review

Kim Tae Hee begins this drama as someone who has lost the ability to feel anything at all.  His days go on with no emotion or desire.  But meeting Dong Joo changes all that.  Now he has to let go of his guilt and allow himself to live a full life, as his brother would have wanted him to.  I recently said that I was concerned Lee Jun Young was being boxed into playing the same idol character in all his dramas.  So I was thrilled to see him tackle a more complex, mature role.  While his acting is still developing, I can see his improvement and I hope he will continue to grow and challenge himself.

Supporting Characters

May I Help You - Full Review

Song Deok Ho as Seo Hae Ahn

Seo Hae Ahn is a young police officer who lives in Vincent's building.  He moved to Seoul from a small town and has no other friends or family.  At least that is what he says.  But Hae Ahn ends up being the hidden "villain" of this drama.  His brother was responsible for Tae Hee's brother's death, and Hae Ahn leaves him there to die instead of trying to save Jun Ho.  Hae Ahn has a crush on Dong Joo, but she only sees him as a friend.

Lee Kyu Han as Vincent

Vincent is Dong Joo's uncle.  He is a priest who was raised by Dong Joo's father, who is his brother-in-law.  He is the only one who knows about Dong Joo's "homework" at the Funeral Home.  He keeps her secret and offers his support whenever Dong Joo needs it, whether that entails a strong shoulder to lean on or just a strong can of soju.

Oh Dae Hwan as Michael

Michael or Hyang Bok is Tae Hee's uncle.  He is the one who started the errand business, and acts as the business manager, sending his nephew to do most of the hands-on work.  He rents out rooms in his building to both Dong Joo and Hae Ahn.

Things I Liked

 ♥ SamSam

The uncles in this drama brought just the right amount of cute comic relief.  I never felt like it was too slapstick, but the scenes with them were always fun; especially when it was both of them together.  I also liked their relationships with Dong Joo and Tae Hee.  It felt like they truly wanted the best for them, which was a refreshing apporoach.  These two actors are both so talented and their partnership in this drama was very enjoyable.

 ♥ Coffin Room

I loved what a bright and beautiful room the coffin room turned into when Dong Joo was helping people.  The comparison between the dark and sterile coffin room, and the elegant and warm makeup room was well done.  The message this room conveyed to me was the idea that death can also be calm and beautiful for those who are moving on to a better place.  I really appreciated this concept.

♥ Baek Dal Shik

Bael Dal Shik is an amazing character.  His relationship with Dong Joo was so natural and healthy.  He always listened to what she wanted and never pushed her against her will.  His patient approach to parenting was inspiring.  It was so sad that he had to be Dong Joo's last case.  It really served no purpose, except to throw in a little last minute heartbreak.  But I certainly wouldn't have been so upset if he wasn't such a great character to begin with.

Things I Didn't Like

Fire Story Tie-In

This drama had a really interesting tie-in between Dong Joo's job at the Funeral Hall and the fire she and Tae Hee were both involved in when they were young (Or, in Dong Joo's case, in the womb).  But the writers didn't do enough to introduce the back story into the series as it went along.  Then they just threw it in as a rushed story at the end.  If it had been better paced and there had been a few more clues along the way, it would have made the story so much more meaningful.

Chung Ha

I don't really feel like Chung Ha's character was needed in this drama.  If Tae Hee had carried some anger and blamed her for Jun Ho's death, it might have made more sense.  But in the end, he said he didn't blame her, he just didn't have feelings for her anymore.  And after her mother's death, she seems to disappear as quickly as she showed up.  Her story felt weak and unneccessary. And what was the point of the other doctor who liked her?  He was a totally pointless character with no significance.

Wishes

There was a strange unevenness to the people that Dong Joo helped.  While some had very interesting stories and I felt like we got to know the characters well, others had very few scenes and short backstories.  It seemed like the writers just didn't have enough material to tell all the stories that they chose.  Maybe showing fewer characters with more complete stories would have made the series stronger.  We didn't even see some of the characters walk down the path, as they moved on to the afterlife.  Some consistancy in the way these wishes were told would have made more sense.

The Ending

The last couple episodes of this drama were a let down for me.  What started as such a nice, interesting story, turned into a tragic tale where the whole purpose is buried in a rush to finish.   Hae Ahn is exposed as the villain who broke several crimes to keep the truth of Jun Ho's death hidden.  I really hate that they ruined this character, who was always so sweet and sincere.  Nothing is achieved by finding out that he is the brother of the actual killer, who has already died.  Dong Joo's dad ends up being her last wisher, which is also sad and pointless.  But once she spends her final moments with him, she is freed of her magical power.  And in a sudden voice over, we later learn that all of the people Dong Joo helped were in a fire with her mom, while her mom was still pregnant with Dong Joo.  Thanks to their help, Dong Joo's mom made it out long enough to give birth to Dong Joo before her death.  And young Tae Hee was also there, which explains the burn on his wrist.  That's a lot to take in for the final 10 minutes, but there it is.  Chung Ha comes to say goodbye to Tae Hee before moving to the US.  Vincent gets an investor to help expand the company.  Dong Joo quits the work at the funeral hall, but finds she can't stay away.  In the end, Dong Joo continues her job, but takes on a different role, while a new "student" gets her old special ability.  And Tae Hee goes back to being a doctor.  And their relationship is going strong!

May I Help You - Unspoiled Review

"May I Help You" is an emotional, supernatural drama.  It deals with themes like death, final goodbyes, and healing for those who go on after losing their loved ones.  The stories are meant to pull at our heartstrings and possibly require a tissue or two along the way.  So if you aren't up to bittersweet and heartbreaking farewells, this one is probably not for you.  The pacing of this one is definitely an issue and the last couple episodes are rushed and a bit of a disappointment.  But the stories of the people she helps are unique and interesting, and the leads have a sweet chemistry.   I give "May I Help You" a 7 out of 10 ramen.

Love in Contract - Unspoiled Review

As a rom-com, "Love in Contract" checks all the boxes.  A love triangle, marriage contract, and birth secret all have the potential to be romantic comedy gold.  But this one veered a little too far into the land of melodrama to be the playful romp I had expected.  I wouldn't go so far as to say I didn't like this drama, but I didn't love it.  The chemistry and pacing just felt a bit off.  If you are a die-hard rom-com fan, there is enough here for you to enjoy, as long as you don't raise your expectations too high.  But if romance is not your genre, I doubt there is anything here that will change your mind. I give "Love in Contract" a 7 out of 10 ramen.

Love in Contract - Full Review

Park Min Young as Choi Sang Eun

After working for years as a single-life helper, Choi Sang Eun is finally ready to retire and live her life for herself.  But for the last 5 years, she has been married to a special long-term client. And ending that contract has been more difficult than she expected. At the same time, a new client with a connection to her secret past requests her help.  Now as her time is divided between these 2 men, she will need to examine her heart to find out what her true feelings are. And as she looks into her heart, she will be faced with other buried family relationships from her difficult past.

Love in Contract - Full Review

Choi Sang Eun was adopted by a greedy family whose only purpose was to marry her into a family that would help their own social standing.  But Sang Eun ruined their plan and ran away from their toxic influence.  Unfortunately, the scars from that experience still haunt her.  Park Min Young plays this kind of arrogantly elegant role well, but there isn't much new that she brings to this performance.  For a character with so much emotional baggage, I felt like there was very little development.  As a long-time fan of Park Min Young, I know she has much more to offer than she showed in this limited role.

Go Kyung Pyo as Jung Ji Ho

For the past 5 years, Jung Ji Ho has been "married" to Sang Eun.  As his wife, she works 3 days a week, coming over and eating dinner with him in his apartment.  As someone who doesn't relate well to other people, this is the perfect situation for him. But when Sang Eun announces that she will be retiring and ending their contract, he is devastated at the thought of losing her.  Now he will try to convince her to turn their professional relationship into something more personal.  But a new client shows up to offer him some competition and showing his feelings has never been Ji Ho's strong suit.

Love in Contract - Full Review

Jung Ji Ho is a successful judge who keeps to himself.  His ex-wife left him to find her own success and riches, but also because he always felt so emotionally distant.  At the thought of losing Sang Eun, he decides to really put some effort into learning to be more social, not just with her, but with all the people in his life. I love Go Kyung Pyo, and I felt like he brought this sweetly awkward character to life in a way lesser actors would never have been able to.  His character's growth was rewarding to watch and I really loved him in this role.

Supporting Characters

Love in Contract - Full Review

Kim Jae Young as Kang Hae Jin

Kang Hae Jin is a famous actor but he is also the son of a rich family.  At one time, his brother was supposed to marry Sang Eun to unite their families.  Hae Jin was a young student at the time, but he fell for Sang Eun immediately.  When he runs into her again by chance, he knows who she is, but she doesn't recognize him.  Eager to have the chance to win her heart, he hires her to pose as his fiancee.

Kang Hyung Suk as Woo Gwang Nam

Woo Gwang Nam was one of Sang Eun's first clients.  Now he is her best friend, roommate, and confidante.  After losing his job as a martial arts teacher, he becomes a body guard for Hae Jin.  Both his fake marriage to Sang Eun and his losing his job were because he is gay.  Now he is determined to be open and honest about who he is and not act as if his sexual orientation is something to be ashamed of.

Love in Contract - Full Review

Jin Kyung as Yoo Mi Ho

Yoo Mi Ho is the one who came to the orphanage to find Sang Eun after pitching the idea of grooming her as the perfect bride to a wealthy family.  Sang Eun's adopted family paid to send Sang Eun and Mi Ho abroad where Mi Ho could train her.  No one suspected that Mi Ho was actually Sang Eun's birth mother until much later.  After years of acting as Sang Eun's nanny and teacher, she now has a chance to develop a real relationship with her daughter.

Things I Liked

 ♥ Ji Ho

Ji Ho's character was the most interesting in this drama, by far.  I loved to watch the way his character developed from someone who couldn't even carry on a conversation with his co-workers to one who attended team dinners and hosted dinner parties.  At the same time, they kept his growth realistic.  He still has a tendency to be a bit awkward in social situations and often misses social cues.  But he has come a long way from where he began, and with Sang Eun at his side, we can expect that he will continue to improve and learn.

♥ Senior Manager

While the Senior Manager did get a bit over the top at times, there were two things that I really appreciated about his character.  First, is that he saw Ji Ho as a good person with a lot of potential.  It would have been easy to give up on him as a lost cause, but the Senior Manager continued to push and encourage him.  He believed in Ji Ho when Ji Ho couldn't believe in himself.  Second, his unending devotion to his wife was adorable.  I was also glad that it wasn't just lip-service to stay in her good graces.  He really treasured her and her opinions.

 ♥ Interesting Job

Sang Eun took the most painful experience of her life and turned it into a creative and rewarding job.  The company that she created is unique and interesting.  I enjoyed the brief glimpses into the way she used the business to help her clients in remarkable ways, and I could have used even more scenes like that.  I think we could have seen more depth and character growth from Sang Eun if we had seen more of her interactions with her clients.

Things I Didn't Like

Lead Chemistry

I think I am not alone in assuming that with two talented leads like this drama had, and Park Min Young's reputation for making great romantic dramas, that the chemistry in this show would have been amazing.  Unfortunately, the result was much less inspiring.  Maybe it can be blamed on the fact that so many of their scenes took places sitting across from each other at the dinner table.  There were moments where a spark glimmered but much of it felt flat and very matter of fact.

Heartless Parents

Okay, I know this is just a drama, and that means it needs, well, drama.  But I can't ignore the awful human beings who are Sang Eun's adopted parents.  And after all of this abhorrent  behavior, her father pretty much weasels out of any punishment or self-reflection.  Aside from the financial support they provided, they had absolutely no ties to Sang Eun's life.  I really would have liked to see him receive some kind of comeuppance for his years of neglect and heartlessness.

 Gwang Nam

While I loved Gwang Nam's character, his growth and ending were a bit disappointing for me.  With such great charm and potential, I would like to see his character find love for himself and break free from his demanding family's clutches.  Instead, he is encouraged to become a celebrity so that his family won't have to feel ashamed of him anymore.  Gwang Nam deserves to be loved and accepted for who he is, and becoming famous seems like a step in the wrong direction for this gentle soul.

The Ending

Luckily, "Love in Contract" sets aside it's melodrama alter-ego for a nice happily ever after.  Sang Eun shows up at the board meeting for Kangjin Group and exposes Hae Jin's brother for the creep he is.  After the obligatory pre-ending break-up, Sang Eun proposes to Ji Ho with a big romantic gesture, and Ji Ho responds in kind with his own intimate proposal.  After a few days of hectic planning and endless errands, the couple find out neither one of them is interested in the big wedding they have been working on.  They decide to have a small gathering of their friends and loved ones and leave it at that.  Hae Jin goes back to acting with the blessing of his mother.  And there may be romance on the horizon for him and Ji Eun.  And Gwang Nam decides to become a singer with Jung Hwan as his manager.  The final scene shows Ji Ho and Sang Eun waking up after their wedding party.  They eat ramen at the dinner table, side by side this time instead of distantly facing each other.  Sang Eun realizes that it's Sunday, which is her favorite day, and declares this one to be perfect.  And hopefully this is the first of many for the happily married couple.

Jinxed at First - Unspoiled Review

"Jinxed at First" is a romantic comedy that gets progressively darker as the series goes on.  The concept of a lucky shaman who foretells the future was interesting and showed a lot of potential in the beginning.  But unfortunately the writing and plot development were kind of a mess. It was at once too heavy to be considered a sweet, light-hearted rom-com and too random and all over the place to be a good romantic drama.  Of course, this drama does have some bright spots with a unique storyline and a large cast of familiar faces.    I give "Jinxed at First" a 6 out of 10 ramen.

The Leads

Jinxed at First - Full Review
Jinxed at First - Full Review

Seo Hyun as Lee Seul Bi

Lee Seul Bi was born in the secret room of a hotel, where she has lived her whole life with her mother.  The 2 women are female shaman with the ability to see the future and therefore bring good luck.  Before she was even born, a young boy named Go Myung Sung reached out to touch her mother's stomach and bound them by fate.  So, when Seul Bi escaptes her room and runs into Myung Sung "by accident", she feels an instant connection.  They spend a day together before Seul Bi is captured and returned to her "prison".  Seul Bi dreams of being able to live a norm life, free from her isolated existence.  So when she runs away again, she goes looking for Myung Sung one more time.  And when she finds him working in his mother's fish shop, she settles in, determined to stay by his side. She befriends the people he works with at the market and stays in his house.  But Seon Sam Joong and Min Joon need her too much to let her go.  Luckily, Myung Sung will do everything he can to help her find her own happiness.

Jinxed at First - Full Review

Lee Seul Bi grew up sheltered, with only her mother and books to keep her company.  Because of this, she is innocent and naive.  Truthfully, at first, I wasn't sure I apppreciated her abundance of immature enthusiasm.  But just like Myung Sung, I found myself slowly charmed by her sincerity.  Seo Hyun was endearing in this pure role and her character growth was one of the few highlights for me.  I wish they had spent more time exploring her relationship with Myung Sung and less time on the whole cousin/ business story.

Na In Woo as Go Myung Sung/ Gong Soo Kwang

Go Myung Sung just recieved a highly coveted position as an intern working for Geumhwa Hotel.  But while celebrating with his best friends, he runs into Seul Bi and helps her run away.  When they find Seul Bi and bring her back, Myung Sung is with her, and from that moment his life begins to fall apart.  He loses his internship, his mother is killed, and he barely escapes his own death with the help of a kind "stranger".  He creates a new identity and tries to put his life back together while running the fish shop his mother had owned.  So 2 years later, when Seul Bi shows up again, Myung Sung is less than thrilled.  But no matter how much he tries, he can't ignore his feelings for her or his desire to help her.

Jinxed at First - Full Review

Go Myung Sung is intelligent and hard working.  Even when he is treated like a harbinger of bad luck, he smiles and continues to treat those around him with kindness and generosity.  Myung Sung never realizes that Seul Bi's mother is the woman who came to stay with his mother when he was just a young boy, even though that event sealed his destiny with Seul Bi.  Na In Woo played this character well enough, but unfortunately the role was rather flat, with nothing very unique or interesting about it.  I think more time interacting with Seul Bi might have given his character the depth he seemed to be missing.

Supporting Characters

Jinxed at First - Full Review
Jinxed at First - Full Review

Jeon Kwang Ryul as Seon Sam Joong

Seom Sang Joong is the CEO of Geumhwa Hotel.  Like his father before him, he has taken a female shaman captive to help him succeed in his business.  He is also the father of Min Joon and Seul Bi, although he thinks Seul Bi's father is someone else.  He truly loves Seul Bi's mother but his guilt over using her talent for his own greed causes him to put up an emotional wall between them.

Yoon Ji Hye as Mi Soo

Mi Soo is Seul Bi's mother.  She fell in love with Seon Sam Joong when she was young, but like Seul Bi, she has always wanted to live a normal life with the man she loves.  Even though she doesn't think she will ever be able to have that, she hopes Seul Bi will find happiness with Myung Sung.

Jinxed at First - Full Review
Jinxed at First - Full Review

Ki Do Hoon as Seon Min Joon

Seon Min Joon is the son of Seon Sam Joong and the heir of Geumhwa Hotel.  He was best friends with Myung Sung before Myung Sung's disappearance 2 years ago.  His father has arranged his marriage to Jo Jang Kyung as a way to help the business.  But Min Joon falls in love with Seul Bi and wants to marry her.  His father is against it because he doesn't want news of Seul Bi's past to get out.  But little do either of them know she is also his half-sister.

Things I Liked

 ♥ Jo Jang Kyung

I liked Jo Jang Kyung as the second female lead.  She was honest and straightforward about her feelings for Min Joon, but she never treated Seul Bi as competition.  And when her parents threaten to break off the engagement,  she leaves home.  Because for her it was never about a business arrangement.  She never sulks, and sets out to win Min Joon's heart with positivity and sincerity.

♥ Modern Fairy Tale

The concept of this drama was very interesting and I liked how, in the beginning, Seul Bi felt like kind of a modern day Rapunzel.  Everything about her first trip out with Myung Sung felt like a fairy tale, complete with the Prince in a crown.  And while any true fan knows that fairy tales have their dark side, the last half of the show lost it's magic for me.  I wish they had focused more on the actual fairy tale, and less on the strange sub-plots.

♥ Wang Yoon Ho

I always love a gangster with a heart of gold.  It was great how once Seul Bi helped Yoon Ho with his son, he was absolutely devoted to her.  He never wavered, even when his own life was at stake.  His bond with both Seul Bi and Myung Sung was sweet, and having him on their side really gave them the edge they needed.  And I was thankful that they didn't try to use him for comic relief, which they like to do with gangster types.

Jinxed at First - Full Review

Things I Didn't Like

Secondary Characters

This drama was packed with so many characters, and yet I didn't feel like any of them had a decent storyline of their own.  Even Min Joon, who is supposed to be part of the main cast had very little substance apart from pining for Seul Bi.  It felt like this drama tried to create too many characters with all the marketplace people, instead of focusing on a couple more detailed secondary stories.  I especially think they should have shown more of Min Joon and Jang Kyung's story.  They had a nice chemistry, but we didn't get to see their relationship develop at all.

Min Joon's Uncle

I don't really know why we needed the story about Min Joon's uncle and cousin trying to steal the company.  The storyline wasn't that interesting and felt like a waste of good screen time that could have built more interesting side plots.  It didn't have that much bearing on the primary storyline anyway, and they could have achieved the same result without going into so much detail about the business side of things.

Curse Story

The whole curse story from this drama seemed randomly constructed and made up as they went along.  We never really hear how Seul Bi's aunt managed to break her pendant and live an ordinary life.  How come Min Joon's grandfather lived with the curse for years, but when his father took it from him, he ended up on his deathbed almost immediately?  Why did the curse skip Min Joon anyway?  And why did his cousin end up with it in the end?  It all felt slapped together with no cohesiveness.

The Ending

"Jinxed at First" has one of the weirdest endings I have ever seen in a kdrama.  First we see Seul Bi's mom take the curse from Sam Joong and die.  Sam Joong is left alone in the countryside somewhere.  From Mi Soo, the curse is passed to Dong Shik, who has joined his father in prison for trying to kill Seul Bi and Myung Sung.  Min Joon and Jang Kyung are doing well together and preparing a wedding date.  Seul Bi saves Myung Sung's life, but then disappears.  Myung Sung and all Seul Bi's friends spend their time searching for her.  They finally find her in some small town, but she has no memory of her previous life or any of her friends.  It takes some time, but Myung Sung finally convinces her that they knew each other and she should come home to try to regain her memories.  But Myung Sung realizes that Seul Bi has a lot of painful memories that may be best left forgotten.  So he suggests that they just marry now and start life over. And she agrees.  So they get married and have a baby, and their life seems full of joy.  5 years later, Seul Bi takes their son to the church Myung Sung likes to visit.  When Myung Sung arrives, their son tells him Seul Bi has been showing him the rocks that say "I love you".  Myung  Sung looks at Seul Bi with a question in his eyes, and she smiles and nods her head gently.  It would seem that her memory has finally returned.  And with that, it appears that the couple will live happily ever after.  It's a strange start to a marriage, and a weird way to end a love story, but all is well that ends well, I guess.

Yumi's Cells - Seasons 1 & 2 - Unspoiled Review

"Yumi's Cells" is a romantic comedy that takes a realistic look at some of the struggles and pitfalls of dating.  Half of the story is told through animated cells that dictate Yumi's choices and feelings.  And while this concept is unique and entertaining at first, it can get a bit silly and redundant as the series goes on. The realistically flawed characters left me disliking each of the leads at some point, which surprised me.  And the inconclusive ending was a disappointment to me, since there is no concrete plan to make a third season.  That being said, I would be surprised if they don't announce one soon, given the fan-based interest.  I give "Yumi's Cells" a 7 out of 10 ramen.

Yumi's Cells Seasons 1 & 2 - Full Review

Kim Go Eun as Kim Yu Mi

After suffering a broken heart, Yu Mi settles into the accounting department at Daehan Noodles and decides to focus on her career.  But a blind date wakes up her sleeping love cell and leads to a new relationship with Ku Woong, the game programmer.  Things seem to be going well for the happy couple until Woong's career begins to fall apart and his Pride Cell refuses to admit his struggles to Yu Mi.  This eventually leads to their breakup and the end of Season 1.  But a supportive co-worker is waiting in the wings to take Woong's spot.  Yu Babi sees Yu Mi's writing talent and recruits her for the marketing department.  Babi quickly suggests that they begin dating and Yu Mi agrees.  His support helps Yu Mi transfer to a department that will utilize her skills and later to quit her job to pursue writing full time.  But as her career becomes her priority, things with Babi become strained.  Now she will have to decide if she still wants to save their relationship.

Yumi's Cells Seasons 1 & 2 - Full Review

Yu Mi is idealistic and hard-working.  Until she begins her writing career, her prime cell is Love.  It is the emotion that drives her.  But when she rediscovers her passion for writing, love is forced to take a backseat.  And this brings about a maturity to her character that builds her confidence and helps her succeed.  Kim Go Eun embraced this role with her usual enthusiasm and I thought she was perfect for the character.  Her interactions with both male leads was natural and charming, and she managed to convey a very different relationship with each of them, which gave the series a unique touch.

Ahn Bo Hyun as Ku Woong

Ku Woong is a video game programmer who has started his own struggling company.  His friend, Chae Woo Ki, works with Yu Mi at Daehan Noodles, and sets the two up on a blind date.  While Yumi isn't too sure about the awkward nerd, Woong immediately falls for her.  And eventually he charms his way into her heart in the guise of a cute frog.  But as Woong's company struggles financially, he becomes more and more distant with Yu Mi because he doesn't want her to see his failure.  There is also tension in their relationship because one of Woong's business partners has feelings for him and is constantly trying to drive a wedge between the couple.  In the end, both of these elements lead to their break up.  When Yu Mi finally sees Woong again later, he has become a successful CEO of a new company.  He still has feelings for her, but Yu Mi is never interested in getting back together.

Yumi's Cells Seasons 1 & 2 - Full Review

Park Jin Young as Yoo Babi

Yoo Babi works in the Marketing Department at Daehan Noodles.  When he first runs into Yu Mi, who lives in his neighborhood, he has a girlfriend and Yu Mi is dating Woong.  They strike up a friendship, although it is obvious from the beginning that Babi is interested in Yu Mi romantically.  After stalking her on social media, he encourages her to transfer into the Marketing Department, where she can use her writing skills for the company.  After he and his girlfriend break up, Babi seeks Yu Mi out more often, but still keeps his distance until he realizes that she and Woong have broken up.  Once she is free, Babi makes a speedy confession and they begin dating.  While Babi is emotionally honest in a way Woong never was, that is also his downfall.  When his emotions cause him to momentarily be swayed by a co-worker, Yu Mi breaks up with him.  They do get back together briefly, but they are never able to go back to the way their relationship was before.

Yumi's Cells Seasons 1 & 2 - Full Review

Ahn Soy as Love Cell

Love is Yu Mi's primary cell and often the star of the show.  After each of Yu Mi's breakups, Love disappears for a while, but she always returns, full of hope and ready to help Yu Mi find true love.  Maybe because Yu Mi has been alone for awhile, Love likes Woong almost immediately and encourages their relationship.  Because of this, it takes her longer to warm up to Babi, but peer pressure from the other cells and Babi's warm personality eventually win her over.  After Yu Mi and Babi's break up, Love loses her primary status to Writer, but Love makes a triumphant return at the end of the drama to promise there is more love in Yu Mi's future.

Lee Yoo Bi as Ruby

Ruby works with Yu Mi in the Accounting Department at Daehan Noodles.  She is immature and irritatingly cute.  At first, Yu Mi is frustrated by Ruby's competitive nature and endless flirting.  But as she gets to know her, she develops a soft spot for her silly antics.  Later in the series, Ruby meets and falls in love with Yu Mi's web novel illustrator, Control Z.

Mi Ram as Kang Yi Da

Kang Yi Da is Yu Mi's best friend and co-worker in the Marketing Department at Daehan Noodles.  Before Yu Mi starts dating, the two of them spend a lot of time together, including traveling to Thailand.  Yi Da is calm and even tempered.  She supports Yu Mi through all her ups and downs.  Toward the end of the drama, she meets Yu Mi's publisher and they end up getting married in the final episode.

Things I Liked

 ♥ Control Z

It was such a delight to see P.O in this drama.  First of all, because by the time I watched this, he was already away in the military.  But also because Control Z was a really fun character.  He was funny and unexpected in all the right ways.  And the fact that he ended up dating Ruby, of all people, was great.  I loved how in the beginning he seemed kind of heartless and rude, but as you get to know his character, you learn to appreciate his simple, straightforward personality.

♥ Yumi and Babi

Kim Go Eun has great chemistry with whoever she works with, but I found her interactions with Babi's character very natural and realistic.  It's not only about sizzling kisses but the casual looks and body language seemed sincere.  From the brush of a hand to a close stance on the street, they looked like a real couple in every scene where they were together, rather than someone just following a script.  I often find this kind of consistant chemistry missing in rom-coms, but I really felt it here.

♥ Cell Concept

I  have to hand it to the webtoon writers for coming up with such an interesting concept.  The cells as their own characters, with stories and personalities to go with them, were very intersting.  Yes, there were points where I really just wanted to get back to the Yu Mi story, but that doesn't take away from the unique and engaging concept this drama is formed around.

Yumi's Cells Seasons 1 & 2 - Full Review

Things I Didn't Like

Yu Mi

I know that this is Yu Mi's story and we are supposed to want a happy ending for her above all, but there were times I really didn't like her character very much.  I found myself feeling like both Woong and Babi deserved better.  Certainly her character has plenty of development throughout the series, and by the end it is easy to see that she has matured, so maybe if they did a third season I would have the opportunity to like her a bit more.  But for now, I can say I found some of her actions and attitudes frustrating and selfish.

Section Chief Nam

Maybe it was just me, but it always seemed like Section Chief Nam's character was on the verge of having his own background story, but it never materialized.  In the beginning, I thought he was interested in Yu Mi, but that didn't seem to be the case later.  They always seemed to hint that there was something else going on with his character, like maybe a secret crush or a controlling mother who dictated all his free time.  It seemed like they made us curious about his story but never revealed anything personal about him.

.

Ending

Okay, so I'm not even talking about the idea that a rom-com ends without her choosing either love interest, which I find ridiculous.  But why would the producers plan only 2 seasons of a webtoon that has 3 seasons, and doesn't have any real closure for Yu Mi until the final season?  It makes no sense to me.  Due to it's popularity, I certainly expect a third season will happen, but that doesn't take away the fact that they chose to only plan 2 seasons in the beginning.

Yumi's Cells Seasons 1 & 2 -Full Review

The Ending

There isn't a whole lot to say about this ending.  Yu Mi's two work friends both find love.  Ruby is still dating Control Z and in a surprise twist, we see Yi Da marry Ahn Dae Young, Yu Mi's editor at Julie Literature.  Yu Mi's writing career has taken off with her webnovel and sequel.  While both Woong and Babi are still in love with her, Yu Mi isn't interested in dating either of them.  Woong is still making efforts to see her and Yu Mi agrees to get together for a meal later, but there is obviously no romance on her side.  Babi has transfered to the Singapore branch where he can lick his wounds in private and try to forget about her.  And the final scene shows Yu Mi getting a text from a new supervisor at Julie Literature who she met the night before but doesn't remember.  Since we see Love finally make it back to the cell's village, it seems like this new guy will be Yu Mi's next boyfriend, although that is left open to interpretation.  At the time of writing, the production team has refused to commit to a third season until they can recover from the first two but they haven't ruled it out all together.  I expect it will happen eventually.

Our Blues - Unspoiled Review

"Our Blues" is another slow-burn deep dive (pun intended) into character development and slice of life stories.  As always with this style, you shouldn't expect lots of action or fast-paced plots.  The realistic tone of this series refuses to paint life in a warm, rosy picture.  Instead, we are pulled into the bittersweet emotions of characters who struggle and do their best, even when they fall short.  The beauty of this drama is in the humanness of the characters and the raw emotion this amazing cast brings to life.  The "omnibus" style means that the focus isn't  limited to a few lead characters, but instead fans out over a whole group of interconnecting life stories.   I give "Our Blues" a 10 out of 10 ramen.

Lee Jung Eun as Jung Eun Hee

Jung Eun Hee is a pillar of this small community.  She gave up on the idea of marriage to build a successful business and gain her own financial stability.  Because she doesn't have any family close by, she has given all her love and support to the people around her.  The drama begins with her first love coming back to town.  But while Eun Hee thinks they may be rekindling their past romance, Han Soo is more interested in borrowing money so he can put his struggling family back together.  Her other main storyline revolves around her best friend, who is treated like a star while Eun Hee is taken for granted by all of their friends.  Years of unspoken resentment finally bubble over and put their friendship to the test.

Lee Byung Hun as Lee Dong Seok

Lee Dong Seok grew up as the illegitimate son whose mother favored his step brothers over him.  Now as an adult, he refuses to acknowledge his mother at all, even though he sees her frequently in the market where they both work.  But when he finds out she is terminally ill, he has to make some heavy life choices about what he is willing to forgive and how he will say goodbye to her.  Dong Seok's first love is Min Seon Ah.  They met when they were young and he has always loved her, even though she turned him down years ago.  When she shows up back in town, he can't help feeling drawn to her.  But she will need some time to heal the scars of her past if their relationship has any chance of developing beyond an old friendship.

Shin Min Ah as Min Seon Ah

Min Seon Ah ran away from Jeju years ago and never planned to come back.  But her difficult childhood left her battling severe depression.  Even after marrying and having a son who is the light of her life, she is still plagued by an incessant darkness that threatens to overwhelm her.  When her husband gets sick of dealing with her mental struggles, he divorces her and takes their son.  Feeling devastated, Seon Ah returns to the small house she grew up in, and works to rebuild both the house and her life.  Dong Seok is one of the only people who knows her from that time, and he offers her his support, friendship, and love, and with his help, she finds the courage to pick herself back up and go on trying.

Kim Woo Bin  as Park Jung Joon

Park Jung Joon is a fishing boat captain who lives in a bus by the sea.  He is in charge of taking the women divers out for work and he also help Eun Hee sell fish in the market when he isn't out at sea.  He is charming and responsible and all the older residents in town treat him like a son.  He falls in love with Lee Young Ok, who is an outsider in their community.  They begin dating, but she insists that they keep their relationship light and that she doesn't believe in marriage.  But Jung Joon is willing to be patient and try to change her mind.  He also develops a special friendship with Young Ok's twin sister, Young Hee that helps to put some of Young Ok's fears to rest.

Han Ji Min as  Lee Young Ok

Lee Young Ok moved to Jeju recently and studies at the school for women divers.  She is confident and cheerful, even though the other divers still consider her an outcast and leave her out whenever they can.  When she was young, Young Ok's parents were killed in a car accident, leaving her to take care of a twin sister who has Down Syndrome.  Though she supports her sister financially, she has left her in a care facility and avoids going to visit.  But when her sister suddenly shows up to stay for a while, Young Ok is forced to acknowledge that her sister deserves more than just her monetary support.  Young Ok begins dating Jung Joon but she continues to put up emotional walls between them.  But she may have met her match in the kind and loving "Captain".

Things I Liked

♥ "Picture" of Depression

Seon Ah's battle with depression was realistic and insightful.  I loved the visual effects they used to show the darkness that she felt.  It was important that they emphasized the idea that neither her desire to be well or her deep love for her son were enough to instantly cure her illness.  Shin Min Ah's ability to show deep, raw emotions brought this role to life

♥ Dong Seok and Ok Dong

This mother/son relationship was at once heartbreaking and achingly honest. And it was fitting that even their reconcilliation in the end was tenuous and unsteady.  Ok Dong's stoic stubbornness even until the end felt completely true to her character.  And Dong Seok's monologue after she died gave such an accurate account of their relationship and the understanding that his feelings for her and her unspoken love for him were the only closure he really needed.

♥ Young Hee

I appreciated the normalcy  they brought to Young Hee's character.  She wasn't defined by her limitations, and she wasn't  just a prop for Young Ok's story.  She was her own person with her own ordinary struggles and dreams.  I was so curious about what her art would look like, and I was so happy that it was neither something childish and clumsy nor something picture perfect.  Instead it showed a fair representation of Young Hee's feelings and perspectives on those around her, just as a true artist should.

Things I Didn't Like

More Ki Joon and So Byul

Baek Seung Do is adorable and I loved the character of Ki Joon.  His crush on So Byul was so fun.  I really would have liked to see more of their romance.  So Byul's playing hard to get was fun, but who could resist Ki Joon indefinitely?  It was obvious that he was wearing her down and I would have like to see at least a couple scenes of them as a couple.

Han Soo

Even though Han Soo was included as one of the leads, his story just kind of disappeared.  We see him go back to his family and never hear from him again until he shows up for Sports Day.  To me, his character felt a bit incomplete.  I would have liked to see at least one more scene of he and Eun Hee sitting down to drinks together, so we could see that their friendship was back on track.  That would have given some closure to his Jeju story and his role in the lives of the rest of the cast.

Eun Hee and Ho Shik

It was pretty obvious that although Han Soo had fond memories of Eun Hee, he never really entertained the idea of leaving his family for her.  And because of that I didn't ship them much.  But it was also obvious that Ho Shik still had strong feelings for her.  And she even admitted that he made her heart flutter.  Now that they are both financial stable adults, I wish Eun Hee would have given him another chance.  I think they could have had a very sweet relationship if she had just shown a bit of interest.  I kept hoping they would finally get there, but unfortunately it never happened.

The Ending

"Our Blues" ends the way many slice of life dramas do;  lots of happy endings with a few bittersweet moments and some dangling loose ends.  So let's just run down our leads. Lee Dong Seok has time to say goodbye to Ok Dong before her heartbreaking death.  Seon Ah is working through her issues.  She is allowed to see Yeol for visits.  She has finally admitted that she has feelings for Dong Seok and he is spending time with her and Yeol on Jeju.  Young Ok has finally been accepted by the other divers.  Her relationship with her sister has become stronger and more consistent.  She no longer sees her as a burden to her own happiness.  And this freedom has allowed her to get more serious about her relationship with Jung Joon.  He still has a way to go before he will actually propose, but they seem to be on the road to happiness together.  And Eun Hee and Mi Ran have patched up their friendship.  Young Joo has the baby, and Ho Shik and In Kwon have made their peace as co-grandfathers.  Everyone including Han Soo, is on hand to help the crew compete for Sports Day with lots of fun and laughs.
