The Story

A woman who stopped talking after a childhood trauma, finds healing from an unexpected stranger.  And when she hears that he has been involved in a near-fatal car accident, she drops everything to be at his side.  But while she waits for him to regain consciousness, she develops a strong connection to the man's brother.  And when he finally wakes up and can't remember anything from his recent past, she begins to lean even more heavily on her new friend.  The more time she spends with the two brothers, the more confused she is about her own feelings.  And choosing one of them means putting an insurmountable rift between them.

Spring Day - Unspoiled Review

"Spring Day" is the third drama in the seasonal series "Endless Love".  It is a classic melodrama with some dysfunctional sibling rivalry.   Maybe it's because I loved the handsome, brooding Zo In Sung in "That Winter, the Wind Blows", but this drama just didn't do it for me.  The characters were immature and overplayed.  The couples all seemed to lack any real chemistry.  The whole thing felt flat and forced.  Even if you are a die-hard Zo In Sung fan, I don't know that I would recommend it, when he is so good in so many other dramas.   I give "Spring Day" an 6 out of 10 ramen.

Spring Day - Full Review

Zo In Sung as Go Eun Sup

Go Eun Sup moved out of his family home because of his parent's endless pressures to become a doctor.  After a traumatic childhood experience, he can't even stand the sight of blood, let alone treat bleeding patients.  Instead he prefers his life as a jazz musician. But when his brother calls to tell him he is leaving the hospital and their parent's in Eun Sup's hands, he is forced to move home and start working at the hospital again.  And when his brother is almost killed in a car accident, he stays close by to care for him.  But one day a mysterious woman shows up to help with the caretaking.  And as the two of them help care for Eun Ho together, they form a deep connection.  But as both brothers reveal their feelings for Jung Eun, Eun Sup will be caught between his own happiness and the well-being of his only brother.

Spring Day - Full Review

Go Eun Sup is childish and deeply wounded.  His overbearing mother has put terrible pressures on him while driving a wedge between him and his brother.  But in Jung Eun he finds a kindred spirit who helps him to finally begin taking steps toward healing from his painful past.  I love Zo In Sung, but this was definitely not the best role I have seen him play.  All of the intense emotional depth he usually plays so well was covered up in immature tantrums and overacting.  But to be fair, this was very early in his career, so maybe we should just look at it as a measure of how far he has come as an actor.

Go Hyun Jung as Seo Jung Eun

Seo Jung Eun was abandoned by her mother as a child and raised by her grandfather.  Years later, she finds her mother, who is not at all pleased to see her long-lost daughter.  The hurt of that incident causes Jung Eun to quit speaking entirely.  Until a stranger shows up at her grandfather's clinic and teaches her how to open both her heart and her mouth again.  One day he leaves on a trip and is almost killed in a car accident.  When Jung Eun hears he is sick, she rushes to be by his side in Seoul.  But when he finally wakes up, Eun Ho thinks he is still a 13 year old and doesn't remember her at all.  As she patiently waits for him to regain his memory, she spends time with Eun Ho's brother, Eun Sup, and the pair end up falling in love.  Torn between the two men, Jung Eun will have to honestly examine her heart if she is going to find a happy future for herself.

Spring Day - Full Review

Seo Jung Eun is quiet and meek.  She was raised on a secluded island of Jeju, where she seldom encountered strangers.  Adjusting to life in Seoul is challenging for her, but she begins to make friends and build a life there, teaching piano lessons to children.  Go Hyun Jung is a fine actress, but this character lacked any kind of depth or sparkle.  The role felt very flat and wooden, with no real range of emotion.  I wish we had seen Jung Eun find more peace and joy in her life, so we could celebrate her journey.  But instead, she remains sullen and withdrawn until the very end.

Spring Day - Full Review

Ji Jin Hee as Go Eun Ho

Go Eun Ho is Eun Sup's older stepbrother.  He is a successful doctor at the hospital run by their father.  He runs off to find his mother and the pair get into a serious car accident that leaves Eun Ho with no memory of his life beyond when he was 13.  This includes not remembering the woman he recently fell in love with, even though she has rushed to his side to care for him.  But by the time Eun Ho starts to regain his memories, Jung Eun has developed feelings for Eun Sup.  And Eun Ho's childhood crush, Min Jung is doing everything she can to win Eun Ho back.

Han Go Eun as Kim Min Jung

Kim Min Jung has been best friends with Eun Ho since they were kids.  As they grew up, their relationship turned into a beautiful first love, until Min Jung ruined it all by cheating on Eun Ho.  Years later, Min Jung regrets her actions.  So when she hears that Eun Ho has lost all his memories and is looking for her, she hopes that she can have a second chance with Eun Ho.  She is disappointed to find that Eun Ho is already in a relationship with Jung Eun. But that isn't enough to make her give up.

Jo Eun Sook as Yoon Suk

Yoon Suk is a widow living on Biyang Island.  She lives with her mother-in-law and brother-in-law, who help her raise her son.  But she longs for life in the city.  So one day, she runs away to Seoul and becomes a hostess at a bar.  When she runs into Jung Eun in Seoul, the women immediately recognize each other.  While each of them are struggling to survive, they offer each other support.

Things I Liked

 ♥ Eun Ho Conclusion

I was happy that in the end Eun Ho acknowleged that Jung Eun and Eun Sup belonged together. Rather than stubbornly trying to hang onto her and putting a permanent rift in his relationship with his brother, he bowed out gracefully and even encouraged Eun Sup to go to her.  This may be the only example of mature thinking I saw in the whole drama, but I think it was a good ending for Eun Ho.  I'm also glad that he didn't just rush into Min Jung's arms out of convenience.  They may still end up together, but at least he is giving himself some time away to get his thoughts and feeling organized.

♥ Grandfather

Seo Dal Ho is a great character in this drama.  He is an encouraging mentor, dedicated doctor, and loving grandfather.  He is patient and supportive of everyone he meets.  I loved that he gets a chance to go out and live his dreams in Africa.  What a fitting way for a successful country doctor to finish out his long career.  And I am happy that when he finally decides to come back, he will have Eun Sup and Jung Eun to help him run his clinic.  While he expected it to be Eun Ho, I'm sure that he will grow to love Eun Sup as much as Jung Eun does.

 ♥ Yoon Suk's Son

I enjoyed the story of Yoon Suk's son, Jong.  I especially liked his interactions with Eun Sup and Jung Eun.  Watching them play house together was cute.  I can't imagine how sad it would have been for him to lose his mother after his father had already died, but I was happy that they gave him his own happy ending.  I am sure that life in Seoul will not be easy for he and Yoon Suk, but I am glad they will be together.

Things I Didn't Like

Eun Ho's Mom

I kept waiting for more information on the backstory of Eun Ho's mom.  She seemed like a pleasant, down-to-earth lady, so I assume the blame rests with Hyung Jin.  But since the whole story is set in motion because of Eun Ho's desire to see his mother, and since it is obvious that his father has regrets, you would think they would eventually unveil the whole sordid history.  My money is on the fact that Eun Sup's mother had something to do with it.  I just felt like her story should have been told.

Age Appropriate

One of my biggest gripe with this drama is how immature the characters are.  After Eun Ho's amnesia he is supposed to think he is 13, but he acts like a rude, obnoxious 6 year old.  Seriously pushing and taking toys away from other kids just doesn't seem like a teenager to me.  Actually, the times they are supposed to be adults, they seem more like they are 13.  Meanwhile, Jong acts like a world-weary adult, hanging out with his uncle all day.

Unlikable Women

With the exception of a couple scenes of Eun Ho's mom, the women in this drama are largely uninteresting and unlikable.  And most of their stories lacked any real closure.  What was up with Eun Sup's mom anyway.  After the affair ends, we just see her depressed and moping around.  But how thick are her ties with the thugs who keep showing up and will Hyung Jin really love her?  Will she find a way to win Eun Sup's forgiveness, not that she deserves it?  Speaking of not deserving, do we think Eun Ho will ever take Min Jung back.  She apologized for cheating on him and then turned around and lied to Jung Eun about the whole John Hopkins thing, so she is obviously never going to actually change.  And what was the point of the jazz band leader's crush on her?  That was a pointless little diversion.  Yoon Sook gets a little redemption in the end when she sends for Jong, but the fact that she ran away and left him in the first place is hard to forgive.

Spring Day - Full Review

The Ending

Well, the one thing I can say is at least we get a happy ending with this one.  Yoon Suk and Jong are reunited in Seoul and seem to be doing well.  Eun Sup finds out that Min Jung lied to Jung Eun and sets the record straight with Eun Ho.  Eun Ho finally accepts the fact that Jung Eun loves Eun Sup and that what he felt for her was probably not the kind of love to build a marriage on anyway.  He tells Eun Sup that he has taken a job at John Hopkins for real so he is going to go away and take some time to heal. Eun Ho contacts Eun Sup from the states to let him know that Jung Eun is managing the hospital in Biyang by herself, knowing Eun Sup will go to help her.  Later Eun Ho calls Jung Eun to give her a heads up that Eun Sup is on the way and encourages her to run to the dock now.  And he is only a little sad when she hangs up on him without a proper goodbye.  Meanwhile, Min Jung is still waiting for Eun Ho to come back and accept her heart.  And who knows, her perserverence just may pay off.

Summer Scent - Unspoiled Review

"Summer Scent" is a classic emotional rollercoaster melodrama.  It is the third installment of the popular drama series "Endless Love".  I really enjoyed the first half of this drama, but it definitely suffered from a super slow plot development over an unnecessary amount of episodes.  On the plus side, the leads are both strong actors who paint a beautiful picture of fated love.  As with all the "Endless Love" dramas, the scenery is breathtaking and the landscape is used to help create the appropriate mood.   I give "Winter Sonata" an 7 out of 10 ramen.

Summer Scent - Full Review

Song Seung Heon as Yoo Min Woo

After losing his first love, Yoo Min Woo has spent the last 3 years in Italy, studying construction and architecture.  When he finally returns to Korea, he is once again bombarded with memories of Eun Hye.  But a trip to the mountains to clear his head only leads to further confusion when he meets a young woman who reminds him of his lost love.  And when he continues to have random chance encounters with this woman, he can't help but be drawn to her.  Even after finding out that Hye Won is engaged to his new boss, he can't stop his heart from beating excitedly in her presence.  But when he learns that Hye Won actually has Eun Hye's heart, he is left wondering where his memories of his college sweetheart end and where his feelings for Hye Won begins.

Summer Scent - Full Review

Yoo Min Woo has spent 3 years throwing himself into work as a way to distract him from the painful memories of his first love.  And he can hardly believe it when he feels himself falling for Hye Won.  But while he faces some doubts and confusion about Hye Won carrying Eun Hye's heart, deep inside he really believes that it is Hye Won who he loves.  I think Song Seung Heon is a talented actor and I loved this hot, younger version of him, with his hip clothes and his floppy hair.  This role gave him a chance to show some raw emotions that I don't see from him very often and I really enjoyed that.

Son Ye Jin as Shim Hye Won

Shim Hye Won grew up a sick child before she was able to get a heart transplant 3 years ago.  That surgery gave her a fresh healthy life.  One of her favorite hobbies these days is to go places and take pictures of wild flowers.  Which is exactly what she is doing before she gets lost and runs into Yoo Min Woo on the mountainside.  And she is surprised to find herself relaxing and enjoying his company.  But she can't believe it when she finds out that he has been hired to work on the same resort project as her.  Especially since she kept their meeting a secret from her childhood friend and fiance, Jung Jae.  And she quickly realizes that she never felt her heart race for Jung Jae the way it does for this handsome stranger.

Summer Scent - Full Review

Shim Hye Won is warm, cheerful, and optimistic.  But when she finds out that she has Eun Hye's heart, she suddenly begins to believe that those traits, which Min Woo says he loves so much, are not actually her own.  Confused about whether Min Woo really loves her and not just the memory of Eun Hye, Hye Won breaks up with him, but she never stops loving or missing him.  Son Ye Jin has grown a lot as an actress since this role.  This character is rather simplistic and her overly emotional responses are often frustrating.  But I think that says more about the character than the actress herself.

Ryu Jin as Park Jung Jae

Park Jung Jae is a family childhood friend of Hye Won.  As they grew up, they naturally started dating and Jung Jae recently proposed to her.  But their affection for one another lacks any real passion, and this becomes abundantly clear to both of them when Hye Won meets Min Woo.  But Jung Jae refuses to "lose" to Min Woo and he does everything he can to keep Hye Won at his side.

Han Ji Hye as Park Jung Ah

Park Jung Ah is Jung Jae's younger sister and Hye Won's best friend.  She meets Min Woo while studying abroad and follows him home when he leaves suddenly without telling her.  She has a crush on Min Woo, but he has always told her he wasn't over his first love.  When she finds out that Min Woo is falling for Hye Won, she tries every trick in the book to try to keep them apart.

Summer Scent - Full Review

Shin Ae as So Eun Hye

So Eun Hye is Min Woo's first love.  The couple met while they were in college together.  After graduating, the couple are on the verge of getting married, but she dies on the way to the wedding.  Her parents donate her heart without telling Min Woo.  And Hye Won ends up being the recipient.  But although Hye Won takes on some of Eun Hye's characteristics after the surgery, Min Woo is quick to point out that Eun Hye tended to be selfish and unconcerned about others, which is not at all like Hye Won.

Things I Liked

 ♥ Genetic Memory

While a story about a transplant recipient and the loved one of their donor is nothing new to kdrama, I still find the concept intersting and somehow beautiful.  This idea of genetic memory is fascinating.  And in some ways, I can appreciate why the writers chose to give Hye Won a new heart in the end, just to prove that the love they shared was not based on Eun Hye's heart. But I still love the fact that through meeting Hye Won, Min Woo was able to find peace with his memories.

♥ Lush Landscape

This drama, like its predecessors in the "Endless Love" series revolves around a season and the familiar landscapes of that season.  I particularly loved the rainy days, lush green scenery, and gorgeous flowers that were used to depict the feeling of summer in this show.  It felt vibrant and alive, while at the same time, it made you think of lazy summer days.  I feel like the vibe was well captured and the beauty of their surroundings heightened the emotions of the story.

 ♥ Romance

I have heard some people complain about the chemistry and lack of skinship in this drama.  And it is true that these older melodramas do have a tendency to keep those kinds of interactions to a minimum, partly because I think that it adds to the emotional angst and feelings of longings.  But I thought the scene of Min Woo and Hye Won dancing in the field was one of the most romantic scenes I have seen in a kdrama.  The intimacy of her standing on his feet and him finally getting to hold her close was poignant.  For me it was that breathtakingly subtle form of romance that is all together swoon-worthy.

Summer Scent - Full Review

Things I Didn't Like

Selfish Siblings

If I had to pick one, I definitely hated Jung Jae more than Jung Ah, but seriously these two were both horrible.  Jung Ah was just immature and manipulative, but she never really upped her game, and it got old by the end.  Jung Jae's attitude that he could tell Hye Won what to do and think, including kidnapping her when she didn't do what he said, was infuriating.  I don't very often want to thrown my remote at the television, but this one had me coming close.

Pacing

As I have said, I felt like this drama started strong.  But it never should have been 20 episodes.  The plot dragged in the middle and it felt like both lead characters lost their way a bit. While in the beginning, some of the long and introspective scenes seemed to fit the drama, by the end those dead spaces started to feel wasted.  I actually wish they had used that time to give us a stronger ending.

Ending Questions

Even though I have already complained that I thought this drama was longer than it needed to be, I wish they had done one more time jump at the very end.  Here's why.  First of all,  if the person I loved led me to believe that they were dead for 3 years, I might need a little time to come to terms with that and forgive them.  Also, even though Hye Won no longer has Eun Hye's heart, she did at one time.  I feel like some people might still be hesitant about them being together.  I would have like to see them a bit more in the future after they had conquered those obstacles.

The Ending

"Summer Scent" gives us a fair hint at a happy ending, even if it has to occur in our imaginations.  Hye Won collapses before her wedding to Jung Jae.  Later at the hospital, we learn that she is in serious condition and needs at least one surgery and possibly another heart transplant.  But Hye Won refuses treatment because she doesn't want to be tethered to a hospital bed again.  In the end, Min Woo convinces her to have the surgery, but only on the condition that he not stay around to see her at her worst.  So Min Woo leaves for Italy.  This section ends with an email from Jung Jae to Min Woo saying that she has passed away.  But 3 years later, we see a healthy Hye Won at Jung Ah's wedding.  When Jung Jae pushes her about why she doesn't just tell Min Woo the truth, she says she is scared that her heart will no longer flutter for Min Woo like it did when she had Eun Hye's heart.  We see Min Woo come home.  Dae Poong picks him up from the airport and we hear that he and Jang Mi are still together.  After a couple close encounters with each other, the final scene shows Min Woo and Hye Won both walking on a crowded stairway where everyone is holding umbrellas.  As they brush past each other, they both feel their hearts begin to beat fast.  Stopping in their tracks, they look up to find themselves face to face.  And the rest is up to you!

I give "Summer Scent" a 7 out of 10 ramen.

Delivery Man - Unspoiled Review

"Delivery Man" is a crime mystery/ghost drama crossover.  Despite those 2 genre, which can be a bit dark or heavy, this one stays pretty light.  Of course, like other dramas that depict granting final wishes, some of the side stories are touching and bit heartbreaking, but not extremely emotional.  It's a bittersweet kind of sad that is to be expected when you're dealing with ghosts who are already dead.  The characters are simple and straight-forward and the over-arcing mystery is a bit predictable as it goes, but the story is fun and it all pulls together well in the end. I give "Delivery Man" a 7 out of 10 ramen.

The Leads

Delivery Man - Full Review
Delivery Man - Full Review

Yoon Chan Young as Seo Yeong Min

After the sudden death of his mother, Seo Yeong Min is forced to give up his own dreams of becoming a police officer to support him and his grandmother.  The easiest way to do that is to drive the taxi his mother drove before she died.  But when he accidentally picks up a ghost who can't leave his taxi for some unexplainable reason, all of his customers feel ill when they ride with him.  Desperate to find a way to make enough money to keep them from losing their home, he and his new ghost friend, Ji Hyeon decide to start a wish fulfilling service for ghosts.  And in their free time, he is hoping to solve the mystery of who Ji Hyeon is and how she can peacefully pass over into death.  But the longer he spends with her, the more he wishes she could find some way to stay.

Delivery Man - Full Review

Seo Yeong Min has been left with a heavy responsibility to provide for his grandmother, which makes him seem overly focused on money.  But in reality, this very attitude is the proof that he is a caring and generous person, who is willing to sacrifice his own dreams and happiness to take care of the people he cares about.  The character of Yeong Min is pretty straightforward, and there isn't much complexity to it.  But that has nothing to do with Yoon Chan Young's acting ability.  He played the role as it was written well enough, I think.  This may not be his strongest performance, but it was a pleasant watch.

Bang Min Ah as Kang Ji Hyeon

Kang Ji Hyeon is a detective who is killed in the line of duty and loses all of her memories.  Now as a ghost, all she knows is that, besides other ghosts, Yeong Min is the only person who can see her, and she is tethered to his taxi.  Luckily, the question of who she is gets answered fairly quickly, but she still has no idea how she died or where she is supposed to go now.  And since she is stuck in Yeong Min's taxi and causing him to lose any income he would be able to make, she comes up with the idea to cater to ghosts.  And that stroke of inspiration will eventually lead them down the correct path to answering all of her questions about her own life.

Delivery Man - Full Review

Kang Ji Hyeon is bright and cheerful.  She has a strong determination and sense of justice.  These qualities are what lead her to personally confront a serial killer.  But her biggest regret is that decision unintentionally leads to the death of Yeong Min's mother.  As the layers of her identity unfold, she is only more driven to catch the person responsible and see him punished so she can leave this world.  Little does she know, her biggest surprise is yet to be revealed.  That she isn't actually dead, but just in a coma!  Bang Min Ah has an outgoing personality that translates well with this kind of character.  Her enthusiasm felt sincere and infectious.  I think she was a nice fit for this role.

Supporting Characters

Delivery Man - Full Review

Kim Min Seok as Do Kyu Jin

Do Kyu Jin is the charming doctor who tried to save Yeong Min's mom after her accident.  He is well liked and respected.  But behind his facade, he is actually a cold blooded serial killer who gets joy out of seeing other people in misery.  He is behind the deaths of pretty much every ghost we see in this drama, whether directly or indirectly.  His own childhood trauma has made him.a psychopath who thinks he is unstoppable.

Park Hye Jin as Park Bun Ja

Park Bun Ja is Yeong Min's grandmother.  She spends a lot of time at home with Ji Hyeon. Even though she can't actually see her,  she seems to sense her presence, so she carries on one-sided conversations with her.  Bun Ja loves her grandson and does her best to care for him.  Whether that is cooking him meals or trying to find him a girlfriend, she puts in her best efforts.

Delivery Man - Full Review

Park Jung Hak as Kang Hyeong Soo

Kang Hyeong Soo is a police officer who is Ji Hyeon's father.  After hearing that Yeong Min is trying to solve his mother's case, which obviously ties into Yeong Min's accident, he begins to team up with Yeong Min in a private investigation of their own.  He has kept the fact that Ji Yeon is not dead to himself, for her safety.  But after meeting Yeong Min, he begins to wonder if he can trust him with his secret.

Things I Liked

 ♥ Do Kyu Jin

Kim Min Seok is really the best part of this drama, in my opinion.  He can go from smooth, charming hero to cold, calculating villain in the blink of an eye.  And it's all totally believable.  It was easy to see how eveyone could be fooled by him, and I thought the character was written well.  I appreciated the fact that they drew us in first, before they started to hint that there was more going on under the surface.  That made him feel more diabolical to me, that he could be so nice to people's faces and a stone-cold killer behind their backs.

 ♥ Balanced Genres

It would have been easy for this drama to get into a darker, more heavy tone.  But it was kind of nice that this one shied away from spooky CGI and violence.  Those things did exist to a degree, but it never became the defining tone.  This one stayed true to it's rom-com roots and even managed to fit in some moments of comedy, without ever feeling disjointed.  That kind of blend can easily come off as akward and ill-timed.  I think this one was true to their advertising, and managed to keep things pretty upbeat for a drama about helping dead people.

♥ Connecting the Dots

Although I definitely feel like the whole serial killer thing has become a bit overused recently, especially in rom-com style settings, I did appreciate how this drama managed to connect all the stories together in the end.  Even early cases that didn't seem to be connected at all, fit into Kyu Jin's reign of terror.  As far as the ghosts and their role in the overall story, everything fit very tidily into the main storyline.

Delivery Man - Full Review

Things I Didn't Like

Taxi Drivers

I really enjoyed the taxi driver side characers, but I wish they had found a way to make them more central to the overall story.  It would have been fun if their taxis could have run back-up for helping the ghosts.  I'm sure there is some comedy missed there, with them driving ghosts they can't actually see.  It just felt like they tried to establish each drivers individual character and then they didn't do anything with them.  For me, it just felt like another case of missed story and character potential.

Kyu Jin and Nurse Heo

Maybe this was just me, but I found the whole relationship between Kyu Jin and Nurse Heo to be rather creepy!  First of all, I am sure they played around with the age thing a bit.  In the first scene where Nurse Heo shows up at Kyu Jin's grandfather's house, she is already at least in her 20's while he is a young boy.  But with each scene, the age gap seems to get smaller.  In the present age, she still seems a bit older but not too much.  But knowing that she met Kyu Jin when he was just a child, and that she obviously has some weird romantic connection with him now,  albeit obviously one-sided, doesn't sit well with me.

Phone Tether

I'm not sure that I ever got a clear idea of how or why the phone tether idea works.  Is it only because Ji Hyeon isn't actually dead that she needs a source of power?  And how does the phone allow Yeong Min and later Kyu Jin to see her?  The whole search for the battery bit made a fun distraction, but after making it through the entire series, I still don't really understand the rules of how this tether thing goes.

The Ending

Delivery Man - Full Review

"Delivery Man" connects all the dots to give us the happy ending we were all hoping for.  Nurse Hee Yeon confesses to everything and then kills herself in jail.  It's sad to say that her death was as pointless as the whole life that she lived devoted to Kyu Jin, since Kyu Jin is still caught in the end, with the evidence to keep him behind bars for a very long time.  Yeong Min finally finds out that Ji Hyeon is really alive, just in time for her to wake up.  Although they tease us into thinking she might not remember her time as a ghost, she does remember everything, including her feelings for Yeong Min.  Yeong Min gets to see his mom one last time before she passes on.  And although Ji Hyeon can no longer see ghosts, Yeong Min still has his ability.  Ji Hyeon gives a very heartfelt apology to his mom, and she tells Ji Hyeon that she is happy to know someone will be at Yeong Min's side.  In the final scene, we learn that Ji Hyeon has transferred to the violent crimes unit and Yeong Min has decided to continue running his ghost taxi service, while helping Ji Hyeon with her cases on their off hours.

Kiss Sixth Sense - Unspoiled Review

"Kiss Sixth Sense" is a fantasy rom-com with some mystery thriller thrown in on the side.  This drama starts out very strong.  For me there were a lot of pluses, like great lead chemistry, fun office setting, and an interesting "magic powers" meets fate  concept.  But as it goes, it seems to lose its focus.  The mystery plot gets a rushed ending and the theme of destiny suddenly seems to lose all meaning.   If you're looking for a mature supernatural romance drama, this one isn't all bad.  I just wish they would have ended as strongly as they started out.  I give "Kiss Sixth Sense" a 7 out of 10 ramen.

Cha Min Hoo appears prickly and arrogant to those who work with him.  He is a demanding boss who does not tolerate laziness or mistakes.  The only ones who know about his secret condition are his doctor and his two closest friends.  But when Ye Sul shares her ability to see the future, he finally finds someone who can understand the struggles he has faced.  Yoon Kye Sang is a great actor and I loved his chemistry with Seo Ji Hye.  But I found the abrupt change in his character during the course of this drama to be too sudden and not very believable.  He seemed uncomfortable playing the smiley, light-hearted character in the second half of this series.

Seo Ji Hye as Hong Ye Sul

Hong Ye Sul is an advertising executive who is mentored by her boss, Cha Min Hoo.  She has lost her memories of when she was young, but just before her father's death, she mysteriously gained the power to see someone's future by touching any part of them with her lips.  When she trips on the job and lands on top of Min Hoo, her lips accidentally touch his and she sees their future together as a couple.  Eager to see where this could be leading, she suggests that they start to date.  But just when her life is starting to look up, her ex-boyfriend shows up, and he shows her that her gift is not as accurate as she assumes and that maybe destiny is more complicated than she had believed.

Kiss Sixth Sense - Full Review

Hong Ye Sul has always dreamed of following in her father's footsteps as an advertising agent.  And when Pil Yo broke her heart, she threw herself whole-heartedly into her work.  Now, with her dream job around the corner, her life is really starting to look up.  I liked Seo Ji Hye in this role, and it was fun to watch her grow and mature through her ability.  This role didn't seem like much of a stretch for her as an actress, but she sat comfortably in the character and played the part quite naturally.

Kiss Sixth Sense - Full Review

Kim Ji Suk as Lee Pil Yo

Lee Pil Yo is Ye Sul's first love.  They met in college and were in a serious relationship, until Ye Sul saw Pil Yo's future with another woman.  Broken hearted, she breaks up with him without ever telling him why.  Pil Yo went away, but after achieving his goal, he is back to try to win Ye Sul's heart again.  But he soon finds out that he may be too late.

Lee Joo Yeon as Oh Ji Young

Oh Ji Young is the daughter of Min Hoo's doctor.  She has known him since they were young, and she has always loved him.  Unfortunately for her, Min Hoo thinks of her as a younger sister and has no romantic interest in her.  He has always been honest with her about his feelings, but Ji Young refuses to believe him.  Now she is a famous actress who is starring in the car advertisement being produced by Min Hoo and Se Yul.

Tae In Ho as Oh Seung Taek

Oh Seung Taek is Min Hoo's best friend.  He is a doctor at a nearby hospital who tends to Min Hoo's medication and any side effects he suffers from.  He meets Ye Sul's cousin, Ho Woo, by coincidence.  The pair agree to date for one week at Ho Woo's suggestion.  But when a week is over, Seung Taek isn't ready to let her go, but she cuts ties with him anyway.  So he is shocked when she shows up as a new intern at his hospital.

Things I Liked

 ♥ Super Power Concept

I found the idea of two children who developed unexplainable powers as a result of a shared trauma to be interesting and original.  Having them both be particularly susceptible to kissing added an extra layer of depth, as if maybe the CPR created some kind of cosmic bond between the two.  I was sad to see them lose these abilities in the end of the series, and I wish the magic had been used more in the plot, but the small bit that we got was sure fun while it lasted.

 ♥ Ban Ho Woo

I loved the spunky enthusiasm of Ban Ho Woo.  And the misdirection about why she was living on limited time was clever.  Here I was thinking that maybe she had a terminal illness or had been soured on the idea of love after watching Se Yul suffer for years.  But it turns out, she was just entering medical school.  And her push and pull relationship with Seung Taek was fun to watch.  She definitely made him work for it, but it kept things interesting.

♥ Interpretations of Visions

This storyline dives into some deep philosophical waters with the question of what makes fate and whether it is unchangeable.  I thought they did a nice job of showing how Ye Sul saw a vision that she thought she understood from her perspective.  But when the event actually takes place, we see that things can be very different from what they seem.  And we are left questioning whether Ye Sul and Pil Yo could have shared a destiny, if she hadn't pushed him away for a simple misunderstanding on her part.

Things I Didn't Like

Final Episodes

I was really disappointed in the final couple of episodes.  I hardly know where to start with this one.  First of all, we didn't just sit through endless flashbacks and cosmic connections to have the lead couple end up in a toxic bickering relationship just because Ye Sul can no longer see the future. I wanted to finally see them matured and happy together. Second, why squeeze 2 mystery stories into the series, and then just rush through their conclusions.  And lastly, if the leads were not each other's destiny, then why did they have those powers in the first place.  I just felt like they ripped apart every element of the plots they had so carefully constructed.  Also, Pil Yo and Ji Young?

Flashbacks

I often hear people complain about kdramas wasting too much time with flashbacks.  And to be honest, I usually don't mind.  I can sometimes use a reminder of some small detail that happened episodes before.  But this drama spent a lot of time showing us the same event again and again, often without any new information to hold our interest.  I know that it was supposed to show how the character is remembering it each time, but they could at least abbreviate it to show just the new parts that are revealed.  I think that the scenes lost some of their meaning from being shown so many times.

Mystery Storyline

As this concept of mixing genre into one drama is becoming more popular, I kind of feel like a broken record.  Here's the deal.  The writers want to add some elements of a thriller to these dramas.  But they also understand that in the end, people come to a rom-com for the romance. The way they just suddenly solve the whole mystery and then move on with no effect to the character's lives is frustrating.  Also, the office politics and espionage story was a non-starter that didn't flow with the rest of the story.  It's not that I don't want these elements added, I just wish they would give the villains and plots they set up the respect they deserve in the context of the overall story.

The Ending

So, I have already said that I didn't love this ending, so I'll keep this short and simple.  Hae Jin is finally exposed as a stalker of Ye Sul and her mother.  Ye Sul and Min Hoo both get injured before the police show up.  And when it is all over, they have both lost their special abilities.  Now that things have changed for them, there relationship becomes rocky and volatile as they fight and break up constantly.  This makes work a tense environment. It finally comes out that Kyung Seok is the one releasing company secrets and trying to make trouble for Ye Sul and Min Hoo. Seung Taek and Ho Woo announce that they are getting married since Ho Woo is expecting a baby.  And Ji Young confesses to Pil Yo that she likes him in the middle of a press conference for their new film. He is shocked but obviously pleased. In the final scene, we see Ye Sul and Min Hoo fighting.    Ye Sul runs off and he chases after her.  And after some minor cajoling, they make up and decide to forget about what might happen in the future and just love each other in the present, living for today.

Kiss Sixth Sense - Unspoiled Review

"Kiss Sixth Sense" is a fantasy rom-com with some mystery thriller thrown in on the side.  This drama starts out pretty strong.

May I Help You - Unspoiled Review

"May I Help You" is an emotional, supernatural drama.  It deals with themes like death, final goodbyes, and healing for those who go on after losing their loved ones.  The stories are meant to pull at our heartstrings and possibly require a tissue or two along the way.  So if you aren't up to bittersweet and heartbreaking farewells, this one is probably not for you.  The pacing of this one is definitely an issue and the last couple episodes are rushed and a bit of a disappointment.  But the stories of the people she helps are unique and interesting, and the leads have a sweet chemistry.   I give "May I Help You" a 7 out of 10 ramen.
