The Story

Rainbow Transportation Company offers luxury taxi services to it’s customers. But in the basement, the group operates a vigilante organization that helps those in need take revenge on those who have hurt or taken advantage of them. And together they bring vengence for those who been abandoned by a corrupt legal system.

Meeting the stars: Lee Je Hoon and Pyo Ye Jin

Lee Je Hoon as Kim Do Gi

Kim Do Gi is the primary taxi driver for Rainbow Transportation. He also serves as the undercover specialist and special forces trained fighter on missions. His own personal experience having his mother murdered by a serial killer makes him a determined advocate for those in need, who have exhausted all legal means to find justice. But this season will hit close to home for him when a close friend from his military days is killed and accused of treason. And when Do Gi disappears back into the military to find out what really happened to her, the team will have to pull out all the stops to find him and join in his personal mission.

In the beginning of this series, Kim Do Gi was a person with a personal vendetta who was trying to relieve his own grief. But as the series has gone on, he has become the loyal protector of his team and their moral compass. His ability to go undercover in any capacity has also taught him how to mask his own feelings. But over time, he has learned to be vulnerable with those he cares about. Lee Je Hoon is such an outstanding actor. Watching him in all his undercover characters is one of the highlights of this series.

Pyo Ye Jin as An Go Eun

An Go Eun is the dispatcher for Rainbow Transportation. She is also the team hacker, easily breaking codes for security systems and computer networks. As the only female on the team. she is also required to go undercover from time to time. She joined the group because her sister was driven to kill herself after being targeted by bullies. For her, the desire to help those who have been hurt by a lacking and corrupt justice system is the thing that motivates her to do what they do. This season, she doesn’t have her own personal storyline, but she is deeply affected by the suffering of her teammates, especially Do Gi, who she shares a special bond with.

An Go Eun is intelligent and empathetic. She acts as the emotional support for the team and for their clients. After losing her older sister, Go Eun was angry and alone, but over time the Rainbow team has become her new family. Pyo Ye Jin is a good actress and I love her in this strong but sensitive role. She offers a great balance between hard-edged justice against criminals and quiet love and support for those around her.

Supporting characters

Kim Eui Sung as Jang Seong Cheol

Jang Sang Cheol is the CEO of Rainbow Transportation. He runs the company alongside his non-profit organization Bluebird Foundation. His main responsibility in the team is supplying the financial backing they need for their missions. Sang Cheol started Rainbow Transportation after his parents were killed by the same serial killer who killed Do Gi’s mother.

Jang Hyuk Jin as Choi Gyeong Gu

Choi Gyeong Gu is one of the mechanics for Rainbow Transportation. Unlike the other members, Gyeong Gu experienced injustice first-hand when he was unjustly accused of a crime and sent to prison. But when Seong Cheol helped him to prove his innocence, Gyeong Gu became fiercely loyal to him and joined the team to help others find justice.

Bae Yoo Ram as Park Jin Eon

Park Jin Eon is the other team mechanic. Unlike all the other members, Jin Eon has no direct personal experience with injustice. But he believes in the cause of Rainbow Transportation and the team members he works with. His quirky, out-of -the-box inventions have saved them on multiple occassions, and the team is often in turn amused and grateful to him.

3 Things I Loved About ‘Taxi Driver 3’

1.

Cameos:

This series always manages to give us some great cameos, and this season was no exception. From Jang Nara to the reappearance of Shim So Young, there were some great stories with lots of familiar faces. The ‘Taxi Driver’ franchise continues to draw big names with solid performances.

2.

Lee Je Hoon:

I swear there is no role Lee Je Hoon can’t convincingly play. From seasoned yakuza to geeky fanboy, he brings a smile to my face every time. I was so glad that he finally won best actor for this role because he certainly deserved it.

3.

An Go Eun’s Missions:

I love to see how Go Eun has grown through this series. She is no pampered computer princess. And I think it’s great that Do Gi has shown his faith that she can hold her own on missions. I feel liked that faith has helped Go Eun blossom into a stronger fighter and more confident vigilante.

3 Things I Didn’t Love About ‘Taxi Driver 3’

1.

Romance or Not?:

After two seasons of dropping subtle hints, I felt like the romance between Do Gi and Go Eun was totally dropped this season. Yet they still had some private moments that made it seem like they had skipped the newlywed phase to go straight to old married couple. So what is really going on? And what exactly was Do Gi’s relationship with his old military friend? It felt like there was some unrequited love going on but it was never addressed. I had hoped that whatever happened between them would be resolved through the final mission to open the way for something between Do Gi and Go Eun. But it ended with no obvious closure.

2.

Do Gi’s Disappearance:

I felt like Do Gi just dropping his phone and running away was too out of character. This team has worked side by side to bring justice to so many over the years. Yet when Do Gi really needs their help, he disappears with no explanation. I think Do Gi has too much love and respect for his teammates to do that to them.

3.

Villain Endings :

I thought the end of the prisoner cages from season one made a lot of sense. And it showed that the team believed in their ability to see justice served in other ways. But too many of the villains from this season seemed to have unclear endings that didn’t feel especially satisfying. That felt especially glaring with the sudden end to Do Gi’s final mission. I mean, I love the cast dance party, but what happened to those corrupt men?

The Conclusion of 'Taxi Driver 3'

The Ending

‘Taxi Driver 3’ ends with Do Gi finishing his personal mission and exposing the plot against his friend Seon A. The bombs meant to start war and unrest were turned into fireworks that lit a concert for Elements, attended by all their former clients from this season. But a final fight between former commander O and Do Gi shows the pair falling off a cliff and into the water below.

They string us along for a bit, showing the Rainbow crew grieving the loss of Do Gi. Go Eun has a dream where the team is all together sharing a meal before waking up and wiping away the tears. But then we suddenly see a new case unfolding with Lim Bok Sun, the younger sister of fan favorite Lim Bok Ja.

She encounters Do Gi at a cabin in the woods, and just when we start to wonder if Do Gi is living alone (Possibly with amnesia because, face it, this is a kdrama) we see Gyeong Gu and Jin Eon hiding in the back room.  So not only is Do Gi alive, but there are hints to a season 4. And that may be the best possible happy ending we could hope for.

My Personal Thoughts and Ratings

‘Taxi Driver 3’ is a great addition to this popular series. After three seasons, the cast has gelled as the cases have gotten increasingly complex. Lee Je Hoon continues to entertain with his undercover magic. And the humor still makes me giggle. If you’ve never seen any of the seasons, I definitely recommend going back and starting at the beginning, because they are just that fun. But it’s not at all necessary. The stories can stand on their own and the roles of each crew member becomes obvious pretty quickly.

But as a revenge drama, you should expect some gray moral ground. You should also be prepared for a certain level of action fighting and blood.  For the fans of this series, I did feel like this season was a bit weaker than the first two. The cases overshadowed the character relationships and left me wanting more personal interaction from a third season. And I missed having an overarching story that connected all the cases. But even so, I still loved seeing this crew and I enjoyed the stories. I give ‘Taxi Driver 3’ a 9 out of 10 ramen.
