The Story

A shy high school student has her life turned upside down when she is asked to model on the street for an art club. Later she receives an invitation to join their small group, Spirit Fingers. And as she meets new friends in the club and explores the wonders of drawing, she will also begin to make discoveries about herself and the things that make her feel happy and confident.

The Leads

Park Ji Hu as Song U Yeon/Baby Blue Finger

Song U Yeon is an average high school student who continually falls short of the academic expectations set by her brothers. One day, U Yeon is approached on the street by a handsome college student named Seon Ho, who asks her to model for their drawing club. In an uncharacteristic moment of bravery U Yeon accepts. Later she receives an invitation to join the group, called Spirit Fingers at their next meetings. U Yeon is thrilled with a chance to see Seon Ho again and to pick up an old hobby.

At the first meeting, U Yeon meets all the Spirit Fingers and learns that each member has chosen a color that represents them. When U Yeon struggles to choose her own color, the group dubbs her Baby Blue Finger. U Yeon is surprised that the members are all different ages. The only other high school student is Gi Jeong, the younger brother of Geu Rin, who comes in only to model. And U Yeon is surprised to find that she met Gi Jeong once before, when he saved her from a group of bullies. As U Yeon continues attending the group, she forms a friendship with all of them, but she and Gi Jeong have a special bond. And with the help of all the members, U Yeon learns about self-confidence, self-expression, and first love.

U Yeon has lived her life flying under the radar and hoping no one notices her. So accepting the first invitation to stand as a model was not easy for her. And if her parents find out U Yeon is "wasting" her time doing art instead of studying, her time at Spirit Fingers will be over. Park Ji Hu is so cute in this role. U Yeon feels like a perfect role for her and I really enjoyed watching her.

Cho Jun Young as Nam Gi Jeong/Red Finger

Nam Gi Jeong lives in an apartment with his two best friend while his college-aged sister, Geu Rin lives upstairs. He and his friends attend a low-ranking high school, but Gi Jeong's focus is more on his side job as a model. Geu Rin makes Gi Jeong come to her art club when they need a model, but he doesn't actually participate in the group. But one day, he shows up to find a new member. She is a high schooler like himself, and that isn't all they have in common. Gi Jeong quickly recognizes her as the student he met at a public bathroom recently when she was being bullied. Gi Jeong immediately falls for U Yeon and decides to join the group to spend more time with her.

As Gi Jeong gets to know U Yeon he starts to take his life and his future more seriously. And every time U Yeon is in trouble, Gi Jeong seems to know and come running. He also takes the time to get to know U Yeon's younger brother, U Dol, although the young boy puts up a lot of resistance. Slowly U Yeon begins to trust and depend on him, but she still has trouble believing a popular model like Gi Jeong could like a normal girl like her, even though Gi Jeong keeps trying to convince her.

Nam Gi Jeong is brash and reckless. But when he meets U Yeon, the pair form a perfect balance. And as she helps him find stability and focus, he helps her let go of some of her anxiety and fear. And the other members of the club easily sense their chemistry, trying to give them nudges along the way. Cho Jun Young has become so popular in these young leading roles and I can see why. He has an easy charm that makes him fun to watch and he felt like a perfect Gi Jeong.

Supporting Characters

Choi Bo Min as Koo Seon Ho/Blue Finger

Koo Seon Ho is a college student who is the Vice President of Spirit Fingers. He has been best friends who Geu Rin since they were young. Seon Ho has secretly been in love with her for years, but Geu Rin has never seemed to notice.

Park You Na as Nam Geu Rin/Mint Finger

Nam Geu Rin is a college student who is the President of Spirit Fingers. She is also Gi Jeong's older sister. She is popular in her university department and loves to go drinking with her classmates. But she is hesitant to date after her first college boyfriend broke her heart.

Ki Eun Yoo as Song U Dol

Song U Dol is U Yeon's younger brother. He is a genius and their mother dotes on him. But U Dol is starting to get tired of the constant pressure and expectation from his parents. And when he finds out his mom lied about her famous ballet career, he starts to rebel.

Things I Like

Club Time

I loved everything about the Spirit Finger meetings. I enjoyed all the wacky character, the fact that most of them couldn't even draw, and the over-the-top themes. It felt like such a fun atmosphere and I couldn't get enough of their quiet comraderie. And I liked the way the older members dealt with the drama; nudging when they needed to but also knowing when to pull back and let the younger members learn on their own.

Whimsy

I came into this drama without reading up on it much. But judging from the title, I expected some element of fantasy. That didn't actually happen. But there was still a charming bit of whimsy. The mystery of their club rooms added just enough whimsical magic without venturing too far into the land of the supernatural. The glowing aura behind each door, the amazing locations, and the sheer, unpredictable number of mystery doors all gave the set a special touch.  I appreciated that the drama doesn't bother to explain these magical moments. Just like the members, we are asked to just let go and enjoy them.

Gi Jeong and U Dol

Gi Jeong is such a fun character in this drama and I loved all of his interactions. But I think my favorite was his unlikely friendship with U Dol and his adorable, but overly moist sidekick, Bong Gu. Gi Jeong could have easily given up on ever gaining U Dol's approval, but instead he wore him down with patience and some elementary school energy. It proved to be a touching testament to Gi Jeong's sincerity.

Things I Didn't Like

Spirit Fingers

After spending so much time with the Spirit Finger members, I couldn't help but be disappointed that we didn't get to find out more about them and their backstories. Even Seon Ho, whose romance with Geu Rin is a focus of the series, doesn't get much backstory outside of his relationship with her. I would have been happy to take an episode to explore each of these fascinating characters.

Bully

In the beginning, Ye Rim has such an integral role, both as the leader of the bullies who attacked U Yeon and the girl who has a crush on Gi Jeong. She is the only non-sibling to pierce the walls of Spirit Fingers. So I was surprised when she just gave up and disappeared. I thought for sure she would at least make one final appearance, but the story just moved on without her. It just felt too sudden and easy.

Barista

I really did love all the mysterious whimsy in this drama, but I couldn't quiet my constant curiosity about the handsome barista, Jonathon and his constant companion Bigfoot. He was so interesting and it felt like he was always there, just standing in the corner. Is it his magic that keeps the art rooms "enchanted" or is he just a bystander?

The Ending

'Spirit Fingers' wraps everything up with a nice happy ending. U Yeon finally challenges her parents, and while the outcome isn't great at first, it eventually leads to better family communication and more relaxed rules for all of them. And once her parents acknowledged U Yeon's love and talent for drawing, she was able to step more confidently into her dreams of becoming an artist. She and Gi Jeong finally get over their misunderstandings and start dating officially. He even gets the meet the parents! Geu Rin also finally accepts Seon Ho's feelings, and even though their romance may be on hold for a bit while he is in the military, she has promised to wait for him.

And with all the business taken care of, the final scene shows one last meeting of Spirit Fingers. This will be the final one for U Yeon, at least for awhile. She is going to need the extra time to study for her college entrance exams. Meanwhile, Gi Jeong is working hard on his modeling career and branching out into acting. As U Yeon looks around at this ragtag bunch who were her lifeline at a time when she really needed it, she reflects on her own growth and how much she has changed.

Should I Watch

'Spirit Fingers' is a quirky romantic comedy about first love and coming of age. And as all good coming of age stories do, it also focuses on self-discovery and esteem. I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed this sweet series. The whole cast is unique and interesting. While the leads are both high school students, I love the way this drama revolves around characters of varying ages and backgrounds. The art club meetings and wacky themes are delightful and I looked forward to each new episode.

But this drama is not aiming for complex stories or mature problems. At its heart, this is a series about a high school student, in the process of growing up, and friends she meets who help her navigate the rough spots. It would have been great if they could have taken the time to fill in the backstories of the other group members. But I thought the whimsical story was fun and uplifting. I give 'Spirit Fingers' a 3 out of 5 ramen.
