The Story
After the palace is overrun by evil spirits and deadly misfortune, the king calls on a mysterious stranger to restore order and save the crown prince by entering the spirit realm and slaying the ghost. Once he enters the palace, he meets a court lady who can hear and talk to spirits. Now they will work together to expose the dark secrets hidden within the walls of the palace and confront those who brought the evil there in the first place.
The Leads
Nam Joo Hyuk as Gu Cheon
As a child,Gu Cheon survived a drowning incident that left his mother dead. Since that time, he has been able to enter the spirit world and kill unruly spirits. He lives life in a secluded monastery, avoiding people whenever possible. But when Cheon is summonsed by the King himself, to fight a ghostly curse in the palace, Cheon has no choice but to agree. And once he gets to the palace, he learns that his own survival depends on finding the evil pond spirit and killing it.
When he gets to the palace, Cheon meets Gang, a palace maid assigned to help him with his mission. Like Cheon, Gang also possesses a spiritual gift that makes her a valuable ally in their battle. But more than that, she is also someone who understands Cheon and helps him let down his emotional walls. And with each session in the spirit world, they discover that the true threat to the palace and the royal family is actually more human that spiritual.
Gu Cheon is emotionally detached and completely uninterested in human interaction. His battles in the spirit world have taught him that human emotion usually leads to resentment and suffering. But when he meets Gang, he becomes interested in another person for the first time in his life. Nam Joo Hyuk has been on a break for the last three years, so it is especially great to see him in this role. He plays a troubled hero well, and I thought this role was a good fit for him.
Roh Yoon Seo as Saeng Gang
Saeng Gang is a palace maid assigned by the King to help Cheon and also monitor his actions. She has the ability to hear spirits. She is actually the illegitimate daughter of the King, but she is not acknowledged by him. Gang considers her ability a curse that makes her feel alienated from the "normal" people around her. She agrees to keep an eye on Cheon, even though she resents her father for his neglect.
At first, Gang is more of a passive observer in Cheon's mission. But as time goes on, she becomes a willing participant in helping him. And she soon finds out that the mystery of the palace curse is much more personal than she ever knew. And her talent for hearing spirits helps her piece together the truth about the past and her family's real role in the mysterious royal deaths.
Saeng Gang is quiet and introspective. Following the mysterious death of her mother, her grandmother was the only one she could count on. But as she learns the truth from the spirits, she finds that her mother and grandmother were both involved in the deaths of the princes. Luckily she finds a new person she can trust in Cheon. Roh Yoon Seo is an up and coming actress and it's fun to see her taking lots of diverse roles. She played this role well and her quiet vibe was a good match with Nam Joo Hyuk.
Supporting Characters
Cho Seung Woo as King Ju Sang
King Ju Sang was born to a royal concubine. His role as King is built on the tragic deaths of all the princes before him. He calls for Cheon to come and break the curse that is over the palace. But in reality, he knows that the person responsible for those deaths is actually his own mother. While the King is not directly responsible for those deaths, he did benefit from them and keep the real cause a secret.
Jang Young Nam as Queen Dowager
The Queen Dowager is the step mother of the King. She doesn't approve of the current King or his lack of pure royal blood. But despite her disregard for the King, the Queen Dowager dotes on Gang, who is her granddaughter. The root of the spiritual presence in the palace stems from the Queen Dowager framing an innocent woman out of jealousy. That woman, in her resentful state, became the Pond Spirit who does haunt the palace, but did not kill the princes.
Kwak Dong Yeon as Crown Prince Se Ja
Crown Prince Se Ja is the King's heir. When he finds out that his grandmother killed the other princes to put his father on the throne, it sparks a horrible obsession in Se Ja. If his father could take the throne through murder, why shouldn't he. Se Ja ends up killing 3 of his brothers, and letting everyone believe it was part of the royal curse, before the King steps in and kills Se Ja himself. In the end, Se Ja is the final monster Cheon will need to defeat to break the spiritual hold on the palace.
Things I Like
Cinematography
Everything about the way this drama was filmed is great. The monsters are uniquely different and interesting. The use of a blue filter for the real world and a red filter for the spirit realm gives a nice distinction between the two. The twitchy camera angles during the action scenes give a heightened scenes of excitement. Everything felt careful and deliberate and I appreciated the drama for that.
Traditional Lore
This drama really dug into some great traditional spiritual lore. Each spirit and concept had a root in a long standing spiritual belief. We meet a pond spirit, some vengeful spirits, and the big baddie, the Ak Gwi. Each of these come straight out of the Korean ghost stories. And a special shout out to the adorable gwi mae! What a cute depiction for such a terrifying entity.
Well Matched Leads
I love that Cheon and Gang are such complex mirror images of each other. There is so much they share. They both lost their mothers at a young age. They both possess a supernatural skill that makes them feel set apart from others. And they have both lived their lives more as observers than participants. They are able to find strength and healing when they band together to use their gifts for good.
Things I Didn't Like
Cheon's Backstory
I know that in an 8 episode drama, there isn't much time for character development, but I wish we had learned more about Cheon's life between the death of his mother and the King's summons. What made him into the person we meet at the beginning of the story? How did he come to live with the monks? His set up was so interesting that I found myself wanting to know a bit more.
Crown Prince Se Ja
As the Ak Gwi, Prince Se Ja is one of the most important characters in this drama. Yet we barely hear anything about him until he shows up as the evil spirit. I wish we had more build up into his character. As it was, when he showed up, I found myself going' "Wait. Who is he?" It wouldn't have been that hard to throw him into a couple early flashbacks to help prepare us for what is to come.
Twisted Family
Wow! I just have to say this is one messed up royal family. You really have to feel bad for Gang, who seems to be the only one with an ounce of human decency. This is a great example of how greed only feeds on itself to create more greed. And it must have been especially painful for Gang to find out that even her mother had been in on it before her death.
The Ending
'The East Palace' ends with a final showdown in the spiritual realm. Cheon defeats the Pond Spirits, but then he finds out she isn't the one who killed the current day princes. Enter Se Ja, the power hungry prince turned ak gwi. Gang drugs Cheon hoping to fight the final battle herself, but Cheon wakes up and follows her. In the end, the only way to beat Se Ja is to get the help of the very adorable yet deadly gwi mae. Accepting his help means that Cheon himself will turn into an ak gwi, which is his greatest fear. But to protect Gang, Cheon sacrifices himself and does what he needs to do to defeat Se Ja. Meanwhile, the King finally admits his own guilt, which appeases the anger of the spirits standing at Se Ja's side. And with that, Se Ja is killed and the palace curse is lifted.
With the fate Cheon has chosen, he should be chained firmly in the world of the ak gwi. He gives the last of his own energy to Gang to ensure she gets back safely. But then Cheon continues to fight his way out. Later we find him back in the world of the living, although he is unconscious and close to death. Gang sits at his side. Eventually he wakes up and Gang begs the King to finally let Cheon go. The final scene shows Cheon and Gang leaving the palace together, but the happy moment is made more somber as Gang sees the chain that is still wrapped around Cheon's wrist, tethering him to the spiritual realm.
Should I Watch
'The East Palace' is a spooky historical action thriller about ghostly battles and human evil. It's short and fast paced. The cast is great, and it's so nice to see Nam Joo Hyuk back on the screen. This drama excels at creating a stunning visual landscape and incorporating traditional ghost stories from Shamanism, Buddhism, and confucianism.
But the idea of a ghostly other realm feels remarkably similar to the popular American series, 'Stranger Things'. Even the subtle use of color changes between the two worlds seems borrowed. At only 8 episodes, the drama doesn't get a lot of time to develop the characters or their backstories. But I loved the exploration of supernatural lore and the gorgeous cinematography. I give 'The East Palace' a 5 out of 5 ramen.
