The Story

A grieving crown prince meets a spunky merchant who looks exactly like his deceased wife. Although her presence is a sad reminder of all he has lost, he can’t help but be drawn to her. And when she takes a job working in the palace, their lives become increasingly intertwined by a fate that trascends our human realm. But they are shocked when that connection causes them to swap bodies. Now they will need to stay close together until they can figure out how to return to their own lives in their own bodies.

Meeting the stars: Kim Tae Oh and Kim Se Jeong

Kang Tae Oh as Crown Prince Yi Gang

Crown Prince Yi Gang grew up in the palace, surrounded by suspicion and betrayal. He is devasted by the death of his mother when he is young, and more recently the suicide or his wife, the Crown Princess. And he is sure that his wife’s death was not the suicide they are claiming.

When Yi Gang meets a peddlar in town who looks exactly like his late wife, he is shocked and confused. And he is secretly thrilled when she takes a job posing as a eunuch in the palace. And when an accident causes them to swap bodies, they are both desparate to return to their own lives. But fate has another lesson in mind that will allow them to see life through each others’ eyes and find a new perspective and respect.

Crown Prince Yi Gang is cautious and distant. He has very few people in the palace he can actually trust. And losing his wife only made that loneliness more pronounced. But swapping bodies with Dal I forces him to open up in ways he might have never done otherwise. And slowly he learns that she is trustworthy. Kang Tae Oh has such a magnetic screen presence, and I enjoyed the way this role let him move between serious and sullen and silly and joyful. I loved him in this role and I thought he was a great fit for the character.

Kim Se Jeong as Park Dal I

Park Dal I is a traveling merchant before a chance encounter with a mysterious stranger takes her on an unexpected adventure. She soon finds out the stranger is actually the Crown Prince, and she ends up following him back to the capital to work as his eunuch. But a random accident leaves her waking up in the Prince’s body, and he in hers.

Now she spends her days doing the job of a Prince, and getting to know the dangers and frustrations he faces on a normal day. And as she helps him investigate the deaths of his mother and his wife, she finds out that she has a much more personal connection to life at the palace than she had ever imagined. And together they begin to reveal the thread of fate that has bound them together and brought them to this point.

Park Dal I  is bright and cheerful. She works hard and maintains a positive outlook on her life and family. But she has no idea that she was once the Crown Princess, married to Yi Gang. And that most of her early memories are built on lies told to her by her family in an effort to protect her royal identity. Kim Se Jeong is a fun actress with a gift for exaggerated movements and gestures that make her great in comedic roles. Whether she is playing the quirky peddler or the woman trapped in a Prince’s body, she was a great fit for this part.

Supporting characters

Lee Shin Young as Yi Un

Yi Un is a cousin of the Crown Prince. At one time he had stood as an heir to the throne. But after his mother is accused of treason and “killed”, he is forced to leave the palace and fend for himself. But rather than compete or act jealous toward Yi Gang, Yi Un acts as a friend and ally in the Prince’s quest to root out the corruption at work within the palace walls.

Jin Goo as Kim Han Cheol

Kim Han Cheol is a minister and advisor to the King. But he has gathered secrets against all the most powerful men in the palace, including the King himself. And Han Cheol uses those secrets to blackmail his competitors and garner more power for himself. Han Cheol is driven by his greed and the need to avenge the mistreatment of his first love, Yi Un’s mother.

3 Things I Loved About ‘Moon River’

1.

Team Yi Gang:

This drama bypassed the whole jealous lesser Prince storyline to give Yi Gang a great support system of fun secondary characters. Yi Un treats him like a brother. And I fell in love with yet another eunuch/body guard team in Se Dol and Sin Won. What Yi Gang lacked in family support he made up for by surrounding himself with loyal allies.

2.

Queen Dowager Han:

I love the way they handled the ending for the Queen Dowager. Yi Gang didn’t stoop to the level of his enemies by killing her off. Instead he left her to stew in the fact that she had failed to maintain control and had alienated anyone who might have once supported her. This was a fitting ending to a bitter woman with a lack of empathy.

3.

Jin Goo:

I didn’t get the memo on when Jin Goo transitioned from handsome young lead to fatherly villain, but he embraced the role well. It was fun to see him flexing those evil acting chops and I really like him as Kim Han Cheol. And while he definitely got what was coming to him in the end, I enjoyed learning his backstory and motive. It made him much more complex and human than the average evil royal minister.

3 Things I Didn’t Love About ‘Moon River’

1.

Body Swap:

I’ve seen a lot of people arguing about whether the body swap was even necessary in this drama. I’m not going to jump into that fray, but if they were going to use it, I wish they hadn’t waited until so late to spring it on us. The drama had already built a foundation that seemed to be working fine without the fantasy element. So to suddenly throw body-swapping into the mix felt sudden and random.

2.

The Bird:

I felt like there was a lot of screen and story time devoted to the poison bird. So I was pretty disappointed when it finally showed up and they just killed it. Really? All of that for nothing? They could have at least milked the effect for a few scenes. It all seemed pretty pointless.

3.

U Hui:

It seems like there were a lot of fans of the second lead couple. And I loved Yi Un. But I just couldn’t get behind U Hui’s character at all. I wasn’t thrilled with the performance and I couldn’t stand her character. She just seemed to do whatever she wanted at any given time, and Yi Un was just supposed to pick up the emotional pieces. She just didn’t work for me.

The Conclusion of 'Moon River'

The Ending

‘Moon River’ gives us a dramatic and ulitmately happy ending. Yi Gang and Han Cheol finally have their showdown in the middle of the palace. But Han Cheol brings Dal I along as a hostage and stabs her in the stomach. As it starts to rain, Yi Gang sees Dal I’s blood flowing and realizes he can take her place. Before Dal I knows what is happening, she finds herself in the Prince’s body, as her own body lies dying on the ground. Han Cheol is killed by the royal guards and Dal I’s body is carried inside to be tended to by the physicians.

The doctors say that it is too late, but as Dal I’s tears fall on their connected hands, her body and their flower of fate are magically healed. I don’t know that it makes much sense, but the rules have always been murky at best, and it gives us the happily ever after we were rooting for, so I give it a pass.

Five years later, we find Yi Gang ruling the country successfully. And he does away with the family punishment system so that Yi Un and U Hui can finally get married as well. Yi Gang and Dal I are happily married and have a son. And romance is blooming throughout the peaceful palace. The final scene shows the couple under a shower of cherry blossoms as they look out over the water where he had once thought he lost her forever.

My Personal Thoughts and Ratings

‘Moon River’ is a historical body-swap drama. That fantasy element gave the drama a unique touch and a fair dose of comic relief. The leads have great chemistry and the pace stays fairly consistent without dragging too much in the middle. The sets and costuming are beautifully filmed and there are some great supporting actors.

But the body swapping comes out of nowhere halfway through the series, which felt too late. It felt very confusing at times and the way the conversations are directed actually made it more confusing than it needed to be. The rules for the swap were murky at times, and felt too random. But the story is interesting and I enjoyed the playful relationship of the leads.  I give ‘Moon River’ an 8 out of 10 ramen.
