The Story
A reclusive college student is visited by a Grim Reaper who was once her first love. Now, with just a week left to live, he asks her to write a bucket list of things he can help her achieve before her death. And as he stays by her side, he will try to help her overcome the grief and guilt she has carried about his death. But as her time draws near, she begins to realize how much she actually has to live for and all the things she will miss.
Meeting the stars: Gong Myung and Kim Min Ha
Gong Myung as Kim Ram U
Kim Ram U was a transfer student at Jung Hui Wan’s high school. And she becomes his best friend after an April Fool’s Day prank has them trading names for the day. Over time his feelings for her deepen into something much stronger. He is hesitant to confess how he feels because he is afraid of damaging their amazing friendship. When a group of them decide to go on a trip together, Ram U decides he is ready to tell her how he feels. But Ram U’s plans are ruined when he is killed in a tragic accident.
After his death, Ram U becomes a grim reaper, and while he has spotted Hui Wan on occassion, he hasn’t seen her since his death. But when he sees her name on the upcoming list of deaths, as a suicide, he abandons his post to try to save her. Now he has shown up on Hui Wan’s doorstep to help her complete a bucket list. But secretly, he is hoping that by doing her list, she will learn everything she has to live for and will make a different choice.
Partly because Kim Ram U and his mom have moved from place to place, Ram U is quiet and introverted. So he is immediately drawn to Hui Wan because of her exuberance and joy for life. She helps to bring him out of his shell and shows him how to laugh and find happiness. Gyong Myung is a talented actor with great emotional depth. I think he was a great fit for this shy, sensitive character.
Kim Min Ha as Jung Hui Wan
Jung Hui Wan is popular student in her school, known for her lively behavior. So when her class decides to have everyone change names for April Fools, she purposefully targets the new transfer student, Ram U. But the prank eventually leads to a long friendship and a continued use of her “borrowed” name. And when Ram U’s mom becomes Hui Wan’s mentor and art teacher, their friendship blossoms even more. But when Ram U is suddenly killed in a tragic accident, while using Hui Wan’s name, Hui Wan is overcome with guilt and shame.
Since that time, Hui Wan has changed into a very serious and depressed college student. She has lost her will to do anything, including live. But one night, she answers her door to find Ram U on her doorstep as a grim reaper. He tells her she only has 5 days until her death. And suggests that they spend that time checking items off her bucket list together. At first, Hui Wan doesn’t have much enthusiams for the project, but spending time with Ram U helps her slowly rediscover her blessings and find healing from her guilt.
Jung Hui Wan is a free spirit who draws people to her with her crazy antics and fun attitude. But she also has a serious side that loves art and is willing to put in the work to improve. But Ram U’s death weighs on her and takes all the joy from her life. Kim Min Ha is a wonderful actress and I love how expressive she can be. It is fun to see her play one character who is both happy and cheerful in the begininning and then serious and distant in later episodes. She captured both extremes well and I really enjoyed her in this role.
Supporting characters
Jung Gun Joo as Lee Hong Seok
Lee Hong Seok is Ram U’s other best friend. He also has a crush on Hui Wan, although at first he doesn’t realize Ram U’s feelings. When he does, Hong Seok gives up on her. But after Ram U’s death, Hong Seok ends up dating Hui Wan for a little while. Unfortunately, Ram U’s death stands between them and they eventually break up.
Shim Eun Kyung as Ko Yeong Hyeon
Ko Yeong Hyeon is a fellow art major at Hui Wan’s school. She also lost someone she loved and because of this, she can somehow see grim reapers. So when she sees Ram U hanging around Hui Wan, Yeong Hyeon realizes Hui Wan’s life is in trouble, and she sets out to try to save her
Seo Young Hee as Kim Jeong Suk
Kim Jeong Suk is Ram U’s mother. She had Ram U out of wedlock, after finding out her boyfriend was actually a married man. Jeong Suk is an artist, and she agrees to give Hui Wan art lessons to try to help her get into art college. But after Ram U’s death, Jeong Suk moves away and Hui Wan loses contact with her.
3 things i loved about ‘Way Back Love’
1.
A Story that Sticks:
For me, this story was so powerful and touching. The themes of healing and grief stuck with me long after I finished watching it. I appreciated the honest, raw emotions and the heartwarming relationships.
2.
Short but Meaty:
This drama did an incredible job of putting so much substance in just 6 episodes. Both the characters and their stories are complex and interesting. I feel like the pacing is consistent and the characters are relatable. The drama also delivers a message of hope without sugarcoating the effects of grief and loss.
3.
Kim Min Ha:
Kim Min Ha is amazing in this drama. Her abilitiy to portray such a full range of emotions with just one character is admirable and I really feel like this is a standout performance for this talented actress.
3 things i didn’t love about ‘Way Back Love’
1.
Ko Yeong Hyeon:
Ko Yeong Hyeon’s character didn’t feel very clear to me. There is mention of the fact that she also lost someone. So does that mean Hui Wan will also see grim reapers from now on? Some thought Yeong Hyeon might be the daughter of the reaper the others were talking about that disappeared, and that she was the one he broke the rules to help. But there was nothing to prove that theory. I wish we knew just a little more about how and why she could see Ram U and supposedly other reapers.
2.
Hong Seok:
I don’t really think they should have had Hong Seok date Hui Wan after Ram U’s death. It doesn’t really fit in with the rest of the story, in my opinion, and it doesn’t have any impact on the story of Ram U and Hui Wan. Having Hong Seok get his heart broken twice over Hui Wan’s feelings for Ram U seems harsh and unnecessary.
3.
Ram U’s Fate:
I was so sad when they showed us the scene of the reapers talking about the punishment for reapers getting involved in worldly affairs. We know that Ram U is obviously breaking the rules to help Hui Wan, but surely his success in saving her life should count for something. Are we really to assume that Ram U just evaporates into nothingness for his rule breaking? I would hate to think that is true. Having to leave Hui Wan again must have been painful enough. I can only hope he goes on with his duty as a compassionate and caring reaper.
The Conclusion of 'Way Back Love'
The Ending
‘Way Back Love’ gives us the bittersweet ending we had to expect. There is no magic spell that brings Ram U back to life, but he does manage to convince Hui Wan that her life is worth living. He comes back for one final goodbye on the rooftop where she had considered jumping. And then he is gone again. But Hui Wan has grown strong enough and healed enough to continue on without him and find happiness in herself.
A year later, we see that Hui Wan seems more like her old self. She has reconnected with her old friends and continued her friendship with Yeong Hyeon. She also finally finished her senior exhibit, using Ram U’s handwriting as the basis for her typography project. In a voiceover, she promises Ram U that she will remember him and keep on living, because she now understands that loving herself is also loving him.
My Personal Thoughts and Ratings
‘Way Back Love’ is a heartbreaking fantasy romance about overcoming grief and guilt. This series is short, yet surprisingly full of hearty topics and complex characters. In my opinion, this gem is seriously underrated. The story is touching and the message of healing is powerful and poignant.
But even for a short 6 episode drama, this one is slow moving and the darker themes of grief and death may not be for everyone. Also, if you don’t enjoy fantasy drama, the Grim Reaper element may not be for you. But I enjoyed the thought-provoking series and it has lingered with me long after the final credits. I give ‘Way Back Love’ a 10 out of 10 ramen.
