The Story

A hard working single mom is shocked when her young adult daughter suddenly quits her job and runs away. But when she tracks her down in a sleepy country community, she is shocked to find not only her daughter but also her first love. At her daughter’s request, the woman decides to put down roots there. And as they adjust to life in a small town, they will find new friends and new dreams. But her daughter’s disappearance was more than just a momentary rebellion, and she will soon find that her daughter is hiding a heartbreaking secret.

Meeting the stars: Yeom Jung Ah and Park Hae Joon

Yeom Jung Ah as Lee Ji An

Lee Ji An was a young women when her childhood friend died, leaving Ji An as the mother to her friend’s infant daughter, Hyo Ri. Ji An has spent her adult life working hard and trying to be the best mother and role model possible. Now, with Hyo Ri on the brink of adulthood herself, the pair find themselves starting fresh in the small town of Cheonghae. And Ji An is shocked to find that her long lost first love also lives there.

After years of living only for Hyo Ri, Ji An may get a chance to experience love and romance for herself, with a second chance at first love. But their idyllic country life is shaken when Ji An learns that Hyo Ri has a serious and potentially fatal health condition. And her new community family will rally around them to offer their love and support.

Lee Ji An is hard-working and fiercely loyal. And although her persistence often feels more like needless nagging to Hyo Ri, she is a loving mother. But at this point in their lives, Hyo Ri wants to see her mother happy and living her own life. Yeom Jung Ah is a veteran actress with a long history, and I thought she was quirky and charming as this determined mother.

Park Hae Joon as Ryu Jeong Seok

Ryu Jeong Seok became a single dad when his wife left him and their young son, Bo Hyeon, to pursue her own career goals. Despite his shock at raising a son on his own, Jeong Seok has found success running his own architectural company and helping  Bo Hyeon become a hard-working and well-adjusted adult. Jeong Seok is surprised to learn that the newest resident in town is a woman who used to follow him around in high school, professing her love to him. Jeong Seok had been too shy then to confess that he was interested then, but fate may have given him a second chance.

Ryu Jeong Seok is quiet and reserved. He has a good relationship with his son, but it isn’t always easy for him to express his thought and feelings clearly. But when he begins spending time with Ji An, she helps him get more in touch with his emotions. Park Hae Joon is a wonderful actor and I always enjoy his quiet, mature presence. I thought he was a great fit for this role.

Supporting characters

Choi Yun Ji as Lee Hyo Ri

Lee Hyo Ri is Ji An’s daughter. She was a medical student because that is what Ji An wanted her to be. But when she is diagnosed with a serious illness, she worries about what her mother will do without her. So she quits her job and goes in search of her mother’s first love.

Bo Hyeon is the first person in town to find out that Hyo Ri is sick, which only deepens his feelings for her.

3 things i loved about ‘Love Take Two’

1.

Relationships:

There are so many great relationships and characters in this drama that it was impossible to pick a favorite. The parent/child relationship, both biological and found, the friendship of Ji An and Seon Yeong, the quirky romances, and the community bond; this drama had it all.And the slow, easy pace of the drama made these relationships bloom in a beautiful and natural way that I really enjoyed.

2.

Mansion:

I thought the way this drama used the transformation of the broken down old mansion as a symbol of the lead’s emotional healing was a nice touch. If anything, I wish they had put more emphasis on this idea and let us see more of the gradual process.

3.

Family Tree:

As a long-time kdrama fan, I know the heartbreaking result of complicating a family registry. So I was so thankful to this drama that they had the town residents make a cheeky joke about it and then it was never mentioned again!

3 things i didn’t love about ‘Love Take Two’

1.

The Ex-Wife:

I’m always happy to see Oh Na Ra, but I’m not really sure why we needed the whole ex-wife story. It didn’t really do anything to further the Ji An love story or effect Bo Hyeon’s future much at all. I would have rather had that time to further some of the characters we already had instead of introducing a new one.

2.

Dementia Story:

I loved Jung Mun Hui’s character and her surrogate mother relationship with Ji An was really precious. But it seemed like her symptoms of dementia were so serious in the beginning and then they just kind of disappeared. I didn’t feel like the Mun Hui from the last half of the drama was anything like the struggling retired doctor we met in the beginning.

3.

Time Jump:

We all know how much kdramas love their time jumps. But this one didn’t prove very satisfying to me. Of course, it was good to see that Hyo Ri was recovered and doing well. But once the surgery was sucessful, I think we could have all imagined she was healthy and fine. In fact, none of the follow-up stories felt that important or surprising. Maybe too much closure is not always a good thing.

The Conclusion of 'Love Take Two'

The Ending

‘Love Take Two’ ends with a warm, happy ending for everyone. Hyo Ri has her surgery, and although her recovery is rough at times, with her losing some of her verbal ability, the town rallies around her to help her heal. And as she takes the time to get better, she makes plans for her own future. Having seen medicine from the other side, she is ready to jump back into medical school.

A year later, we catch up with everyone. Not only are our two couples doing well, but the adults have also bonded with each others’ children. Cheonghae and its residents continue to move on together, with Ji An and Seon Yeong firmly part of their community. New love is on the horizon for Seon Yeong and Tae O. Hyo Ri is killing it this time around in her medical program and Bo Hyeon has decided to do a two year program in Berlin. But their relationship is strong and they will be reunited once they each complete their educations. The final scene shows Ji An and Hyo Ri traveling together as they enjoy each others company.

My Personal Thoughts and Ratings

‘Love Take Two’ is a warm romantic drama about a single mom and her relationship with her daughter. It is a story of love, friendship, and community. The small town setting gives us a fun array of secondary characters, and the dual generation love stories are a sweet touch. This is a slice of life drama with a classic kdrama feel.

But the pace is slow and steady, which may not be everyone’s cup of tea. This is a drama that is concerned more with people and relationships than action. This kind of life in a small town drama has been done plenty, and so the characters can feel cliche. But I loved the leads and the emphasis on finding healing through everyday life. I give ‘Love Take Two’ an 8 out of 10 ramen.
