The Story

A young director who has been in a 5 year slump decides to make his comeback by remaking his famous father’s most well known masterpiece. And instead of casting a famous actress to play the role of the terminally ill heroine, he goes against all advice to hire a rookie actress who is actually dying. In the beginning, he sees his choice as the perfect future publicity stunt, but as he works with her, the lines between acting and real life become blurred.

Meeting the stars: Namkoong Min and Jeon Yeo Been

Namkoong Min as Lee Je Ha

Lee Je Ha is the son of a famous melodrama film director. While Je Ha’s first major film was heralded as a huge success, some attributed his popularity more to his father’s well-respected career than his own talent. But now, five years later, he hasn’t been able to get over a directing slump. He is desperate for another box-office hit, so when an old friend and producer comes to him with a proposition to remake his father’s greatest melodrama about a terminally ill woman he can’t resist.

And as the project gets underway, a star actress from Je Ha’s past steps forward to audition for the leading role. But it is an unknown rookie, Lee Da Eum, that manages to gain Je Ha’s interest. And that is, in large part, because Da Eum is actually suffering from her own fatal illness. In the beginning, Je Ha sees Da Eum as a way to gain extra attention when the actress does eventually pass away. But as the pair spend time preparing and working together, they bond over similar childhood traumas and a love of cinema. And slowly the movie, written in secret by Je Ha’s sick mother shortly before her death, becomes a love letter that tells his own painful romantic story.

Lee Je Ha has never believed in true love. So when he originally decides to make his father’s film, he plans to make it a tragedy instead of a romance. But when he finds out that the movie was not written by his father after all, but by his dying mother, he begins to see the story and the idea of real love from a new perspective. I love Namkoong Min. He is such a talented and versatile actor, and I thought he was great in this role. He has an ability to portray such deep emotions and his quiet intensity fit this role perfectly.

Jeon Yeo Been as Lee Da Eum

Lee Da Eum watched her mother suffer through a rare disease before dying at an early age. And she learned as a child that genetics can be both a blessing and a curse. Having a father who is a doctor has meant that she has always received the best care. But now, at 25, her time has run short.

So, when she hears that her favorite movie, that tells the story of a dying woman, is being re-made, she dreams of finally getting the chance to live her life-long dream of being an actress. And while she decides to keep her personal health a secret from the other cast and crew, she confides in Je Ha, who is understandably nervous about casting a lead who could die any day.

In the end, Je Ha sees the value in letting someone who has really lived the experience play the part. And as she lives out her final dream, Je Ha will step in to make sure his actress lives long enough to finish their masterpiece. And when she finds herself falling in love with the cynical Je Ha, she gets the chance to live out another dream, to experience love first hand.

Lee Da Eum is caring and optimistic. Since she was a child, she has understood the need to  live every day to the fullest and never take the blessings of life for granted. But with Je Ha, she also gets a chance to share her more painful emotions and fears as well. I have seen Jeon Yeo Been in several dramas, but her emotional performance in this drama was a pleasant surprise. I was so moved by her beautiful portrayal of this brave and tender character.

Supporting characters

Seo Hyeon Woo as Bu Seung Won

Bu Seung Won is a producer who has known Je Ha for years. It is his idea to re-make ‘Love in White’ and he gets the investors that make the project possible. But while Seung Won wants to help his old friend out of his slump, he is more concerned about the success of the film than any of the people involved.

Lee Seol Chae as Seo Yeong

Seo Yeong is a star actress who played the lead in Je Ha’s first movie. She is newly divorced and hoping for a role to rekindle her career. But while she expects to be cast as the lead, Je Ha gives her a supporting role.

Oh Kyung Hwa as Kwak Gyo Yeong

Kwak Gyo Yeong is Da Eum’s childhood best friend. Da Eum lives with Gyo Yeong and her mother, who have been like a family to her since she and Gyo Yeong were in elementary school.

A Comprehensive Look at Our Movie 2025

3 things i loved about ‘Our Movie’

1.

Losing Friends:

I think one of the hardest things for long-term terminally ill patients must be to watch people they have met slowly succomb to their illnesses. I liked that the drama included this element with Kim Min Jeong. Her friendship with Da Eum and her mother’s presence following Min Jeong’s death were a very nice touch.

2.

Managing Emotions:

Let’s face it.  This drama could have easily been an emotional bloodbath. But I really appreciated the fact that they handled this difficult subject with grace and restraint in all the right places.  For me, this was not a drama about death so much as about life, and while the sad emotions are all a part of the process, there were plenty of sweet moments along the way.

3.

Behind the Scenes:

It’s always fun when a drama takes you behind the scenes of a film or series. They added some interesting details about what it looks like on set, the process of scouting and creating sets, and the down time that is inevitable.

3 things i didn’t love about ‘Our Movie’

1.

Chef or Manager:

So I understand that Jun Byeong’s dream is to be a chef in his own restaurant. But whereas he seems to lack any real cooking skills, I felt like he made an excellent manager. So I was kind of disappointed when he gave up his manager job to go back to his kitchen.

2.

Don’t Change the Ending:

This drama warned us all of where things were heading, but they also included the mention of clinical trials which left me with the tiniest sliver of hope. But at the point that Je Ha wants to change the ending so the heroine can live and Da Eum tells him not to, I knew there was no miracle cure waiting on the horizon. The moment felt so heavy with meaning, but I couldn’t help being a little disappointed.

3.

Je Ha’s Dad:

The mostly invisible presence of Je Ha’s dad hangs heavy throughout this drama. It left me wondering if he was really as terrible as he seemed. I wish we had seen a bit more of Je Ha’s relationship with him before his death and how Je Ha ended up hating him so much.

The Conclusion of 'Our Movie'

The Ending

There’s no miracle or happily ever after for our leads in ‘Our Movie’. The movie finishes filming and it’s emotional for cast and crew alike as they see Da Eum act out the final goodbye to her onscreen love. We see some dates and sweet scenes between Da Eum and Je Ha, but when ‘Love in White” finally premieres Da Eum’s seat remains empty, although her name is there as one of the story contributors. And with that, we know that Da Eum is actually gone. Thankfully we are spared any gut-wrenching death scene, which I appreciate.

A year later, we catch up with everyone. We hear that Je Ha has been on hiatus for a year, as he takes the time to heal and reflect. Jae In and Gyo Yeong have become friends and spend time hanging out at Jun Byeong’s restaurant. Hong has written her own script and follows in her mentor’s footsteps, casting a rookie, much to PD Bu’s dismay. And in her spare time, Hong is dating Jun Byeong. And while the couple stops in to visit Je Ha at his family home, Jun Byeong gives him a gift Da Eum left for him. It is a recording on her camcorder with Da Eum’s goodbye message, telling Je Ha that she will always be near by whenever he thinks of her.

The final scene shows Je Ha back at work. And as a young actor questions his character’s feelings of love, Je Ha carefully explains how love works with an authority that shows he finally believes that there is such a thing as true love, and that he plans to use that kind of love in his movies from now on.

My Personal Thoughts and Ratings

‘Our Movie’ is a beautiful, slow-burn romance. The visually stunning cinematography and the poignant dialogue give this drama a stirring, dreamlike quality. The cast is amazing and the story’s realistic balance between hope and tragedy keep the plot engaging from start to finish.

But this is not meant to be a quirky rom-com. The subject matter is heavy and the character’s journeys are heartbreaking. For those who are sensitive to topics of terminal illness and death, this drama may offer a little too much realism. But if you are looking for an emotional love story that gives a moving perspective of love and loss, this one is definitely a winner! I give ‘Our Movie’ a 9 out of 10 ramen.
