The Story
An NIS agent goes undercover at an elite local high school to locate a rumored fortune in gold, buried somewhere on campus by the founder of the school. As he researches the urban legends surrounding the school in search of clues, he finds an unlikely ally in his compassionate homeroom teacher. And he is surprised to find that high school is a lot more fun the second time around. But the plot thickens when he discovers a surprising connection between the gold and a tragedy from his own past.
” If you think about it, treasures aren’t that far away. My treasure are these people. “
Jung Si Hyeon
Meeting the stars: Seo Kang Jun and Jin Ki Joo
Seo Kang Jun as Jung Hae Seong / Jung Si Hyeon
Jung Si Hyeon grew up as the son of an NIS agent. But when his father disappeared while undercover on a case, he is adopted by the family of his father’s former partner. Now as an adult, Si Hyeon has followed in both of his “fathers'” footsteps. But when Si Hyeon messes up a mission his team is working on, his director gives him two choices: either resign or go undercover as a high school student.
And so, Si Hyeon enters the elite Byeongmun High School. His goal is simple. He is to find Emperor Gojong’s fortune in gold bars, which is rumored to be buried somewhere on the campus .With the help of a new friend, Dong Min, Si Hyeon learns about the 4 urban legends of Byeongmun and how each legend contains a clue to finding the treasure.
But this case strikes close to home when he finds out that this was also his father’s last mission before he disappeared. And almost as surprising is his realization that his homeroom teacher is his long-lost first crush from second grade. So, Si Hyeon will try to find the gold, solve the mystery of his father’s disappearance, and win back the heart of his first love.
Si Hyeon is smooth and a natural born leader. His success as an agent has given him the confidence he lacked when he was younger. And although his first experience with high school had been horrible, he finds that a fresh perspective and maturity can make all the difference. I think Seo Kang Jun is a great actor and his natural charisma made this role perfect for him.
Jin Ki Joo as O Su A / O Bong Ja
O Su A is a contract teacher at Byeongnum High School. Her dream is to become a full-time teacher and to be able to help struggling students. But being a temporary worker isn’t easy and she is taken advantage of often.
When a new student transfers into her homeroom, she is surprised to find herself inexplicably drawn to him. So it is a relief when she learns he is not actually a student, but an NIS agent working undercover. Always one for a good mystery, Su A jumps in to help Si Hyeon with the case. And as the pair spend time working together, they continue to grow closer. But little does she know that her connection to him goes back much further than his appearance in her classroom.
O Su A is optimistic and encouraging to her students. She has a sincere desire to be a support to her students and that makes her a wonderful teacher. Jin Ki Joo’s bubbly personality fit well with this character and I felt like the role was a great fit for her.
Supporting characters
Kim Shin Rok as Seo Myeong Ju
Soe Myeong Ju is the Chairwoman of both Byeongnum Foundation and High School. She is also the mother of Byeongnum’s star student, Ye Na. Myeong Ju has a dream to find the gold and use it to build “Education City” as a place for only the most elite students.
Jeon Bae Soo as An Seok Ho
An Seok Ho is Si Hyeon’s father’s former partner with the NIS. He has raised Si Hyeon since his father’s disappearance and is now Si Hyeon’s team leader. While Si Hyeon is undercover, Seok Ho stays close by posing as an innocent Quizno’s owner.
Lee Seo Hwan as Kim Hyeong Bae
Kim Hyeong Bae is the Director of the Domestic Division of the NIS. He is Seok Ho’s direct supervisor and worked with both Seok Ho and Si Hyeon’s father before his disappearance.
3 things i loved about ‘Undercover High School’
1.
Seo Myeong Ju:
Kim Shin Rok is chilling as the unhinged Chairwoman. Seo Myeong Ju is delusional and psychopathic, and Kim Shin Rok portrays those characteristics in every movement and facial expression.
2.
Student Characters:
I really liked the character development we got to see from Si Hyeon’s classmates, especially Ye Na and Dong Min. It was touching to see the way they came into their own as the drama progessed. I also loved that in the end, the students were able to come together and do their part to expose Myeong Ju.
3.
Bloody Chicken Gang:
It was silly and unexpected but I couldn’t help giggling at the revelation that Su A’s mom was a former “gang” member. Maybe it was her edgy past that made her feel drawn to Si Hyeon!!
3 things i didn’t love about ‘Undercover High School’
1.
Si Hyeon’s Disguise:
In the beginning, the team’s biggest concern was how to convince everyone that Si Hyeon was actually a teenage student. So I was kind of disappointed that once he got to the school, no one even questioned it. It seemed like there should have at least been a bit of suspicion at the start to justify their concerns.
2.
Si Hyeon’s Father:
The way this case blended into Si Hyeon’s father’s final case seemed so important to the overall plot. Yet, I felt like we didn’t get much development into his story or his relationship with his son. I wish we had seen a bit more of them together to carry the required emotional punch of finding his body.
3.
Ghost Stories:
I really liked the four urban legends, and showing them as spooky ghost stories was a nice touch. So, I kind of wish they had leaned a little harder into each of them, rather than the stories being more about the clues than the stories themselves.
The Conclusion of 'Undercover High School'
The Ending
‘Undercover High School’ ends with a nice resolution for most of the characters. Director Kim is killed and Si Hyeon is framed for the murder. But the principal is finally convinced to tell the truth about Myeong Ju’s illegal activities. In the end, she is sentenced to life in prison for the three murders she committed including Si Hyeon’s father.
Si Hyeon makes one more visit back to homeroom, and while the initial greeting is more lukewarm than he expected, they eventually give him a warm farewell back into the world of adulthood. And then he goes home and finds the clue his dad left on the floorboards of his house. Under the board, Si Hyeon finally finds the missing gold bars. They had been under his feet the whole time. And with that, his mission is now entirely complete.
Five years later, we find Su A has achieved her dream to become a full-time teacher. Dong Min has written a successful webtoon about an undercover NIS agent. Yu Jeong is on her way to becoming an NIS agent herself, like her dad and “brother”. And Ye Na is studying art on her own terms. In a fun addition, there is a hint that Yu Jeong and Ye Na may actually be dating, judging by Yu Jeong’s title in Ye Na’s phone; “my Love”. With the death of Director Kim, Seok Ho is the new Director at the NIS. Yeong Hun and Mi Jeong have finally made their relationship official and our expecting a new addition to their family.
And our leads? They are going strong. And in a star-studded proposal, he finally “puts a ring on it”. And just in case they decide to do a season 2, they left a tiny opening by showing Si Hyeon in his next case. And this time he gets to be a teacher instead of a student!
My Personal Thoughts and Ratings
‘Undercover High School’ is a simple mystery crime drama with an interesting story. The romance is cute but subtle. Seo Kang Jun is charming as the undercover agent reliving his high school days and Kim Shin Rok is absolutely convincing as the maniacal chairwoman. This drama isn’t meant to be especially deep or realistic, but it’s a fun, casual watch. The action scenes give it a bit of spice and the mystery has some nice twists along the way.
If you are looking for a gritty true crime feel, I suggest you check out Hulu and skip this one. The mystery is far-fetched, the comedy can be a bit ham-handed, and the drama relies too heavily on over-used kdrama tropes. But if you enjoy a rom-com adjacent drama with a fun twist of mystery, this one is an enjoyable ride. I give ‘Undercover High School’ an 8 out of 10 ramen.
