The Story
After being cursed by an evil spirit, a young crown prince is forced to live a double life. While his true self is a shy, sensitive man who would rather design and create beautiful clothing than train to be a king, his “alter-ego” is brash and egotistical, and excels at activities like fighting and hunting. Each time the prince falls asleep, he wakes up as the other personality.
But when a beautiful assassin shows up, both personalities take an interest in her, and each personality begins to devise ways to eliminate the other so they can be with her forever. And amid this personal strife, following the death of the King, a heated political battle for the throne heats up between the crown prince, his half brother, and the political factions that support each side. With battles raging, both inside and out, the crown prince will need to figure out who his true allies are.
'Love Song for Illusion' is a tale of trauma and splintered identity.
Meeting the stars: Park Ji Hoon and Hong Ye Ji
Park Ji Hoon as Sajo Hyun / Ak Hee
Sajo Hyun is the Crown Prince who would much rather spend his days at the local boutique designing clothes than learning to be a good King. All his life, his father has ridiculed and abused him in the hopes of turning him into a monster similar to himself.
But after subjecting Hyun to the murder of countless innocent people, Hyun develops Disassociative Identity Disorder (DID) that manifested for him as the possession of an evil spirit. His new personality, known as Ak Hee, is everything Hyun’s father wants in a son. Now, each time Hyun falls asleep, he wakes up as Ak Hee, and returns when Ak Hee finally sleeps.
When a beautiful assassin named Yeon Wol, with no memories of her past, ends up as the Crown Prince’s concubine, both personalities fall in love with her. Unfortunately for Ak Hee, he can’t touch Yeon Wol without experiencing intense pain. But this doesn’t stop him from trying to steal Yeon Wol from Hyun. And when Hyun’s father suddenly dies, the competition for the throne heats up between Hyun and his half-brother Sajo Yoong. As Hyun is attacked from all sides, he needs to learn who he really is and have the courage to embrace his whole self.
Sajo Hyun is kind and quiet. His dream is to design and create luxury clothes. It is in his time at a local boutique that he first meets Yeon Wol, although she doesn’t remember the encounter. Park Ji Hoon is such a charming young actor. I have really enjoyed watching him take on such interesting roles. I thought he did a nice job of drawing subtle differences between these two complex and very different characters.
Hong Ye Ji as Yeon Wol
Yeon Wol is a royal descendent from the Yeon dynasty that was wiped out by Hyun’s father, the King. Wol was only a child, but she was able to escape unnoticed and taken in by a group of Yeon soldiers who have formed a group of assassins to take back their rightful throne for Yeon Wol. Under their tutelage, Yeon Wol becomes a dangerous assassin set on revenge against the King and his whole family.
But when Yeon Wol wakes up from a failed assassination attempt, she has no memory of her past. And when Ak Hee tells her she is his woman, she assumes it must be true. This leads to Yeon Wol being established as the prince’s concubine. But as she spends time with the prince, she falls for Hyun and not Ak Hee. And as her memory begins to return, and she remembers her vendetta against the royal family, she is torn between loyalty for her family and love for Hyun.
Yeon Wol is strong and brave. She has had to take care of herself her whole life, and that has made it impossible to forget how much she hates the King. But, despite the warnings from her followers, she quickly begins to understand that Hyun was a victim just like her. Hong Ye Ji has a fun, spunky personality that matches well with this character’s energy and I liked her in the part.
Supporting characters
Hwang Hee as Sajo Yoong
Sajo Yoong is the son of the King and his consort. He is Hyun’s half-brother. The King uses Yoong to try to bring out the competitive spirit in Hyun. But his actions only backfire by giving Yoong unrealistic expectations of his place in the royal family. After the King’s death, Yoong begins making plans to try to steal the throne from Hyun.
Ji Woo as Geum Hwa / Jin Chae Ryun
Geum Hwa is Hyun’s wife and the crown princess. But the crown prince has never loved his wife and avoids her whenever possible. She is greedy and power-hungry and will stop at nothing to maintain her position.
Hwang Seok Jeong as Choong Ta
Choong Ta is a shaman who is aware of Hyun’s DID and tries to help whichever personality will get the most for him in any given situation. Choong Ta also has multiple personalities known as the Male Choong Ta and the Female Choong Ta. But the female is often swayed by her attraction to the handsome men she meets, which causes her to be a liablility to the male half.
3 things i loved about ‘Love Song for Illusion’
1.
Hyun/Ak Hee:
I really enjoyed watching Park Ji Hoon in such a challenging role. And I loved how Ak Hee was the perfect alter-ego for Hyun. He represents all the things Hyun felt like he needed protection from, as he battles to find his true self. And it seemed perfect that by the end of this drama, with Yeon Wol by his side, Hyun is finally ready to face his struggles head on, after uniting the fracture within his own psyche.
2.
Sajo Yoong:
Sajo Yoong is truly a detestable character and this made him the perfect villain for this drama. With the King’s death, they needed someone else who was just as bad or worse than him. In this case, none of the cowardly officials could fit the bill. But Yoong has it all. A man who tries to steal Hyun’s throne and “his woman” and is willing to sacrifice his own mother for a final bit of revenge.
3.
Eunuch:
I always love a good eunuch side-kick, and this one is no exception. He is even more important than most, because he protects the body of Hyun when Hyun isn’t in control of it himself. Under the eunuch’s watchful eye, Ak Hee at least has someone to answer to.
3 things i didn’t love about ‘Love Song for Illusion’
1.
Plot Trajectory:
Maybe because it is based on a webtoon, this drama made a lot of plot jumps over the episodes. It felt more like a series of side plots than an overall, cohesive story. And that also left many stories feeling out of place or incomplete. The backstory between Geum Hwa and Jeon Seo is a perfect example of this.
2.
Choong Ta:
Choong Ta’s relevance to the story needed more focus. There is no exploration of the similarities between Hyun’s situation and Choong Ta’s own multiple personalities. Also, the bomb at the end, that Choong Ha was just pretending Ak Hee was an evil spirit, came out of the blue. And the whole Shaman Association story was weird. This character needed more development to really make sense.
3.
Assassin Group:
It’s hard to respect an assassin group when you only see one failed attempt at an assassination. First of all, I would have liked a bit more explanation as to why the daughter of a general was a royal descendant. But the group itself felt like a waste of plot line. And how did Yeon Wol give up a years long vendetta without a second thought? The whole story felt weak and disjointed.
The Conclusion of 'Love Song for Illusion'
The Ending
‘Love Song for Illusion’ gives us a nice, happy ending. At first, it seems like Ak Hee has actually killed Hyun in the mind space. But later we learn Hyun is only pretending to be Ak Hee. And it doesn’t take Yeon Wol long to figure it out either. The two devise a plan to get rid of Yoong once and for all. Hyun agrees to hand over control of the kingdom to Yoong so he can run away with Yeon Wol. And he tricks Yoong into confessing to killing the former King with the ministers listening outside. So he is thrown in prison and scheduled for execution.
Hyun sends Ji Jeon Seo off with the Queen to live together in hiding. Yoong tries one last attempt to hurt Hyun by trying to kill Yeon Wol with another poison dart thrown by his mother. After the attack, Hyun kills Yoong on the spot. Yeon Wol is hit by the dart and in the midst of the chaos, Ak Hee escapes the mind space and tries to take Yeon Wol back with him to trap her there. But Hyun finally gains the strength to stand up against Ak Hee and send him away for good. And somehow, Yeon Wol recovers just fine.
In the end, Hyun and Yeon Wol marry and we hear Ak Hee’s last words as he wishes the couple a happy future. And Choong Ta runs away, vowing to go somewhere new where they can take advantage of more human greed.
My Personal Thoughts and Ratings
‘Love Song for Illusion’ is a fascinating historical drama that blends supernatural shamanism with psychological themes. Park Ji Hoon does a nice job of portraying this dual role. The female lead is strong and independent and her backstory goes well with the overall plot. The story is unique and uses interesting visual scenes to represent mental health.
But the story can feel a bit slow at points. Also, in an effort to distinguish two very different personalities, Park Ji Hoon’s portrayals can feel a bit over the top at times. The plot often veres off the main story, making the drama feel a bit meandering at time. But I enjoyed the fun historical setting and the complex characters. I give ‘Love Song for Illusion’ an 8 out of 10.
