The Story

A man from a humble background spends his life working to become a valued employee of Daesan Group. Now as an executive who has earned the favor of the aging CEO, he dreams of becoming the company president. As the CEO prepares plans to name a successor in the face of failing health, rivals will spring up from within the family and outside. With stakes this high, the competition could be costly and dangerous. And the keys to power may lie in the secrets behind a two trillion won political slush fund.

'Buried Heart' is a tale of revenge and bittersweet family connections.

Meeting the stars: Park Hyung Sik and Hong Hwa Yeon

Park Hyung Sik as Seo Dong Ju

Seo Dong Ju grew up as an orphan who dreamed of riches and success. And his determined attitude helped him get a good job and rise through the ranks of Daesan Group. Now with a top job in the company, the favor of the CEO, and a wonderful girlfriend at his side, life seems almost perfect. As Chairman Cha prepares to name a successor, Dong Ju’s ultimate hope of becoming the President of Daesan is beginning to feel attainable.

But everything changes when his girlfriend turns out to be Chairman Cha’s newly married daughter. Not only that but the benefactor who has helped Dong Ju rise to power, Yeom Jang Seon, suddenly turns on him. As the race for Daesan heats up, Dong Ju will find enemies on all sides and his life in serious danger. And Dong Ju will be forced to make a risky decision when he hacks into Jang Seon’s political slush fund as a means of insuring his life.

Seo Dong Ju never imagined that he was actually the son of his sworn enemy Heo Il Do. And the circumstances of his supposed death will rock the foundation of the entire Cha family. I have always been a fan of Park Hyung Sik, but this role really elevated his acting. The emotional depth of his character and the facades he is forced to create to stay alive show a remarkable growth and Dong Ju is really the heart and focus of this whole series.

Hong Hwa Yeon as Yeo Eun Nam

Yeo Eun Nam has been dating and living with Dong Ju. Her feelings for Dong Ju are sincere, but what she hasn’t told him is that Chairman Cha is her grandfather and that she is engaged to Dong Ju’s high school rival, Yeom Hwi Cheol. When Dong Ju shows up at her wedding to help serve the chairman, he is shocked. Eun Nam admits that she loves Dong Ju but she is desperate to be acknowledged by her grandfather, and this marriage of powerful families is her ticket to success.

Unfortunately, Eun Nam’s marriage of convenience isn’t an easy one and having Dong Ju constantly in the family home makes it impossible for her to move on. Eun Nam serves as a confidante  for Dong Ju through the ensuing power struggle for Daesan and eventually divorces Hwi Cheol. But in the course of discovering his own birth secret, Dong Ju learns some things about Eun Nam’s family that he keeps from her. And those secrets, along with everything they have been through make it hard for them to go back to the innocent love they once shared.

Yeo Eun Nam has grown up being undervalued and underestimated because she is a woman. And the need to prove her value motivates her to put the desire for success above her feelings for Dong Ju. This is my first drama with Hong Hwa Yeon and I thought she played the part well. The little bit of chemistry we did see between she and Park Hyung Sik was good. But I wish we had seen more development for her as a character and her relationship with Dong Ju.

Supporting characters

Huh Joon Ho as Yeom Jang Seon

Yeom Jang Seon is the former Director of the NIS. He retired from public service to teach law. But behind the scenes, he has the power and influence to pull strings in the business and corporate world. He has been secretly working with Dong Ju to make sure that Daesan Group will eventually be his. But when Dong Ju is no longer useful to him, he tries to have Dong Ju killed.

Lee Hae Young as Heo Il Do

Heo Il Do was best friends with Eun Nam’s father, Yeo Sun Ho. After Sun Ho’s death, Il Do marries his friend’s widow, Cha Deok Hui. Il Do is desperate to inherit Daesan Group to hand down to his son, Tae Yun. Later Il Do finds out that he is actually Dong Ju’s father, although he had never known. This further complicates his rivalry with Dong Ju and Il Do’s guilt for actions in the past.

And the family is shocked when he brings home an illegitimate son as a candidate for his successor.

3 things i loved about ‘Buried Hearts’

1.

Jang Seon’s Wife:

Watching the scenes of Jang Seon with his wife made me feel a little sick. The way he just quietly asserted his opinion until she gave up and agreed felt emotionally abusive. So I loved that in the end she turned her husband’s fortress and symbol of power into a kindergarten. Good for you, Bo Yeon!

2.

Tae Yun:

I loved Tae Yun’s character. He is one of the only supporting characters who has any character development. And I enjoyed watching his interactions with Dong Ju, which makes it even better when we find out they are brothers. He was too good to live in such a corrupt family and his ending really did break my heart, but I’m glad we had him through the whole drama.

3.

Dong Ju’s Journey:

I get that many people were unhappy with Dong Ju’s ending. But I loved how they made him a cautionary tale. Plenty of people spend their whole lives trying to become something they are not, only to discover when they succeed, it isn’t all they had hoped. Dong Ju beats Jang Seon and attains his dream. But in the end, all he is left with is tears and regret.

3 things i didn’t love about ‘Buried Hearts’

1.

The Neurologist:

Maybe this was just me. But considering all they had been through, I really thought Dong Ju and Eun Nam were done. So I assumed when they introduced the pretty female neurologist, she would be Dong Ju’s love interest. They seemed to have some nice sparks and I thought her treatment of him would be more important to the overall story. Not going to lie, I was a bit disappointed this didn’t pan out.

2.

Ji Yeong Su and Seon U:

I felt like Yeong Su and Seon U’s characters were strangely inconsistent. They went from living a happy, quiet life owning a bakery to money hungry fiends capable of murder in the blink of an eye with no real development. It seemed too sudden and different from their original charcters.

3.

Eun Nam:

Okay, let me start by saying, I didn’t like Eun Nam’s character. I felt like she made her selfish decisions and then expected everyone to just understand and forgive her. But as the lead actress, I still expected to see some kind of character development from her. Instead, this actress was almost as overlooked as her character. She had no story or purpose of her own.

The Conclusion of 'Buried Hearts'

The Ending

‘Buried Hearts’ definitely doesn’t give us a happy, rosy ending.  In fact, it hints at something much more dark and tragic. But the good news is that Dong Ju does accomplish his dreams of becoming President of Daesan and getting his revenge on Jang Seon. So, here is how it all plays out.

Dong Ju holds Jang Seon captive and steals his fortune. When he finally frees him, Jang Seon finds his home has been converted to a kindergarten by his wife and later we see him arrested and sent back to prison. After getting his revenge and achieving his dream of becoming president, Dong Ju leaves it all behind to find his own peace.

Yeong Su and Seon U have established control of the family assets, even taking a family portrait with the Chairman. And then Seon U ruthlessly kills Tae Yun to eliminate any competition. His death sends Deok Hui into a mental tail spin that leaves her hospitalized. And although Dong Ju left Eun Nam the keys to the business, she has retreated to their old apartment to paint and wait for Dong Ju.

The final scene shows Dong Ju carrying out Il Do’s final wishes to spread his ashes. Dong Ju takes out his violin and the two guns belonging to his father as he gets lost in memories of the past. We are left to wonder if the presence of the guns mean that Dong Ju intends to take his life or is just looking for healing from the painful memories.

My Personal Thoughts and Ratings

‘Buried Hearts’ is a revenge melodrama with familiar tropes like birth secrets and family jealousies. It is emotional and exciting. The characters are extreme and the all-star cast is sold out for the story. Park Hyung Sik gives one of his best performances to date. Unlike many popular revenge dramas that seem to glorify the experience, this drama does a nice job of also presenting the pain and disillusionment of finally getting that thing that you always thought you wanted.

These characters are almost all entirely unlikable, with a few refreshing exceptions. Their wealth and power often make them seem unrealistic and overblown, and that made it hard for me to sympathize with them, even when the events are somewhat tragic. The personalities are inconsistent and the lead male is the only character who seems to have a believable story development and arc. The romance is “buried” under a deep layer of makjang that is not everyone’s cup of tea. But I enjoyed the ride and seeing Park Hyung Sik shine in this totally new kind of role was worth the watch. I give ‘Buried Hearts’ an 8 out of 10.
