The Story

A runaway slave takes the identity of a noble woman and lies out the noble woman’s dream to become a legal expert and represent those who can’t stick up for themselves.  But even as she tries to live a normal life, her secret follows closely behind her.  Her former owner would love nothing better than to find her and punish her for the mess she left behind the night she ran away.  And when she meets a handsome young storyteller, she becomes more determine than ever to escape her dangerous past and live her life as a caring and upstanding citizen.

'The Tale of Lady Ok' is a love story about freedom and equality.

Meeting the stars: Im Ji Yeon and Choo Young Woo

Im JI Yeon as Ok Tae Yeong / Koo Deok I

Koo Deok I lives with her father as slaves for a wealthy and abusive politician. One night, she and her father run away, in search of freedom. But their plans go awry when the pair are separated in the forest. Deok I ends up living and working at a small Inn in the woods. And when a band of villains set the Inn on fire, Deok I is mistaken for a noble woman who died in the blaze.

Deok I begins a new chapter in her life as Ok Tae Yeong, a woman from a wealthy family who dreams of becoming a legal advocate. Deok I vows to care for Tae Yeong’s family as if it were her own, and to achieve Tae Yeong’s dream of providing legal representation to those who can’t defend themselves.  But when her former owner shows up in town with revenge on her mind, Deok I’s new life and those she has come to love are all in danger.

Koo Deok I is strong and independent.  She is also fiercely loyal. She marries Yun Gyeom even though he will never love her romantically, and defends him even after he abandons his family and leaves her to take care of it all. And she is determined to sacrifice her own happiness with Seung Hwi so Seungn Hwi can’t be harmed. Im Ji Yeon is a talented actress and she played both extremes of this “dual” character role well.  She went from gritty servant to elegant noble woman with an ease that is enviable and I loved her in this drama.

A Safe Peek at The Tale of Lady Ok 2025
A Safe Peek at The Tale of Lady Ok 2025

Choo Young Woo as Cheon Seung Hwi / Song Seo In | Seong Yun Gyeom

Cheon Seung Hwi is the illegitimate son of a noble family. He real mother was a concubine and his step mother hates him.  Seung Hwi lives in separate quarters with his servant and best friend, Man Seok. He meets Deok I selling snacks at a festival and falls instantly in love. But things fall apart when Seung Hwi finds out his father has promised him in marriage to Deok I’s cruel owner, Kim So Hye.

In the chaos that follows, Deok I and her father run away and Seung Hwi and Man Seok strike out on their own. They start a storytelling troupe, with Seung Hwi as their star storyteller. Years later, he meets Deok I living as a noblewoman who is about to marry a man who looks exactly like him. And later, when that man disappears without a trace, Seung Hwi agrees to step into his place, so that he can finally live with Deok I in her new identity. But when Deok I’s secrets begin to surface, he will find both their lives at risk for the lies they have told.

Cheon Seung Hwi is a sensitive artist and true romantic. He risks everything to be with the woman he loves, and even as he awaits execution, his mind is set on how to raise Deok I’s spirits. He is naive and often unprepared for the harshness of the world, but he makes up for it with his unwavering devotion. Choo Young Woo is really growing as an actor. Unlike Im Ji Yeon’s role, where she is still the same character with different identities, Choo Young Woo played two completely different men with very different personalities, and I thought he gave each their own clear voice. I look forward to seeing him in his next 2 dramas starting in June.

Supporting characters

Yeon Woo as Cha Mi Ryeong

Cha Mi Ryeong shows up to study law under Tae Yeong. But we soon find out that she is the daughter of Lady Song, who is responsible for the death of Baek I. At first, Mi Ryeong is there to help her mother get revenge on Tae Yeong, but later she realizes her mother is actually the one in the wrong. Later, Mi Ryeong marries Do Gyeom.

3 things i loved about ‘The Tale of Lady Ok’

1.

Human Rights:

This drama did a beautiful job of taking the theme of equality and applying it to various societal issues. We got stories of unfair treatment to women, slaves, and the LGBTQ community. Each story felt relevant and nicely represented.

2.

Found Family:

The idea of found family is a popular one in kdramas, but I really loved the way this drama showed these relationships. Tae Yeong’s relationships with Mi Ryeong and Do Gyeom were so special. And I loved to see the people who lived with her spending time as a family.

3.

No Royals:

It’s rare for a historical drama to totally ignore the royals. While local political intrigue does play a role in the events of this series, I enjoyed the focus on the common people and life outside of the capital.

3 things i didn’t love about ‘The Tale of Lady Ok’

1.

Yun Gyeom’s Development:

While I loved Choo Young Woo’s performance, I didn’t feel like the writers did justice to Yun Gyeom’s character. He comes off as just a convenient plot tool rather than an important character with development. I would have loved to have seen more of what he went through during his time away from home. He had such an amazing story and we never got to see any of it. In the end, all we saw of him along the way made him seem selfish and irresponsible. I was glad he gained some redemption through his final sacrifice.

2.

Side Kicks:

The body count for this drama was pretty staggering and there was no exception for the devoted servant side kicks. It was heartbreaking enough to lose Baek I so early on. And I see how Man Seok had to die to get Seung Hwi out safely. But Man Seok’s bright warmth was sorely missed. I kept hoping by some miracle he would wake up.

3.

“Plague” Story:

There were a few points in this drama where a problem was solved so suddenly, it almost gave me whiplash. One example of this was the mysterious disease story. It took several episodes to set the stage and get all the necessary characters there at the right time. It felt like it all ended way too abruptly.

The Conclusion of 'The Tale of Lady Ok'

The Ending

‘The Tale of Lady Ok’ gives us a much needed happy ending, though things definitely looked bleak going into the final episode. Tae Yeong finds out she is pregnant, but then she is arrested, and Seung Hwi and Man Seok soon follow.

Man Seok dies in prison after being tortured. Deok I is reunited with her father, who is alive and in good health. Tae Yeong is cleared of criminal charges but sent back to Kim So Hye to live out her life as a slave. Seung Hwi confesses to killing Yun Gyeom in order to save Tae Yeong, so he remains alone in prison, writing his final masterpiece, ‘The Tale of Lady Ok’.

When Tae Yeong learns that a disease has broken out in the city and that it’s actually being caused somehow by So Hye’s husband, she fakes her own illness to get sent there. And when she arrives, she meets Yun Gyeom, who is dying of heart disease, treating the vicims.

Together, the group of doctors and nurses solve the mystery of what has caused the illness, who was responsible, and how to cure it. And with that our villains all recieve their proper commeuppance. Once it all resolves, Yun Gyeom shows up at the prison and tells Seung Hwi that he is dying anyway and he will take his place in the cell. At first, Seung Hwi resists, but eventually he agrees.

3 years later, Do Gyeom and Mi Ryeong come to visit Seung Hwi and Deok I. They are living at the sea with Deok I’s father and their son, named after Man Seok, as he wished. Deok I is still doing legal work and Seung Hwi has just finished his book about the story of her life. And everyone still alive lived happily ever after.

My Personal Thoughts and Ratings

‘The Tale of Lady Ok’ is a beautiful, sweeping historical romance that focuses on issues of inequality during the Joseon Era. The brisk pace resists the temptation to draw this out past the average 16 episode format. They do a nice job of keeping the plot moving without feeling rushed. The cast is terrific and the characters are genuine and inspiring. It deals with poignant and heartfelt themes without coming across as heavy or preachy. The move to only offer this drama through Kocowa seems to have put it at a bit of a disadvantage, especially with oversees markets and because of that, I feel it has been extremely underrated.

There are points where this drama is a bit unrealistic and relies too heavily on convenience and coincidence. And there are some scenes of the mistreatment of slaves and women that were difficult to watch. Some violence is necessary to tell the story properly, although I felt it was done tastefully. If you aren’t interested in the more human elements and social issues of history and law, the story may lack a hook for you. But I found the themes surprisingly relevant and the story heartfelt and unique. I give ‘The Tale of Lady Ok’ a 9 out of 10.
