The Story
A researcher who has dedicated years to studying potatoes is challenged when her small country reasearch lab is purchased by a major corporation she used to work for. And when the company brings in a new director tasked with cutting costs, her future seems bleak. But when her new boss rents a room in her family guesthouse, the pair are forced to at least try to keep the peace and work together for the good of the lab.
'The Potato Lab' is a Quirky Romantic comedy about love and community.
Meeting the stars: Lee Sun Bin and Kim Tae Oh
Lead Female Character: Lee Sun Bin as Kim Mi Gyeong
Kim Mi Gyeong had her life turned upside down when she found out her fiance was engaged to another woman and she was fired from her job at Wonhan Retail. Nursing a broken heart, she escapes to the countryside and becomes a researcher at a potato lab. For the past several years, she has put her all into the lab and their mission to grown quality potatoes. But when their small lab is taken over by her former employer, Mi Gyeong finds the past sneaking into her peaceful life. And when a new director, So Baek Ho, shows up with the mission of cutting costs, Mi Gyeong finds her job and her pride on the line.
But when Baek Ho rents out a room at the guest house she lives in, it is impossible to avoid him. And she soon discovers that the stiff, serious director she sees in the office is not the only side of Baek Ho. As they work together to improve the company, their relationship quickly begins to blur between professional and personal. But any future they have may be jeopardized when Mi Gyeong finds out that Baek Ho may have played a part in her heartbreak 6 years ago.
Kim Mi Gyeong is hard-working and energetic. Her role at the lab involves jumping in wherever there is a need, and working hard to find solutions. Although at first she appears to be an employee who is easily replaceable, since she has no unique skills, it is her fiery spirit that has held their team together over the years. Lee Sun Bin has a natural comedic timing and handles this kind of slapstick humor well. I enjoyed her in this role.
Lead Male Character: Kim Tae Oh as So Baek Ho
So Baek Ho started as a scholarship recipient with the Yoon family before working his way up to his present role as Wonhan Retail’s innovation director. For years he has handled the company’s difficult tasks and lay-offs. So he is not happy to learn that he is being sent into the countryside, by Gi Se, who sees him as competition, to reorganize a small potato lab.
Baek Ho takes a room at the local guest house before he finds out the owner is the brother of the first person he intends to fire. Neither he nor Mi Gyeong is happy with the situation, but they agree to try to keep their professional life separate from what happens at home. And they soon find themselves working together as they make a plan to save the lab and ensure its profitablility. But just as the couple start to fall in love, Baek Ho finds out that he unknowingly caused the events 6 years ago that had brought her so much pain. And he isn’t sure he can forgive himself.
Baek Ho has had to work his way up from the bottom and he has adopted a cold, distant professionalism that has allowed him to make difficult decisions without letting his emotions interfere. But in his personal life, Baek Ho is not the unfeeling monster he pretends. And when he finds he hurt Mi Gyeong, he begins to reevaluate how his disregard may hurt innocent people. This is Kim Tae Oh’s first role back since his military service, and I was thrilled to have him back on my screen. He is swoon-worthy in this role and I think he played it perfectly.
Supporting characters
Lee Hak Joo as Park Gi Se
Park Gi Se is Mi Gyeong’s ex-fiance. But he broke up with her to marry the rich daughter of the Wonhan (Yoon) family. When his wife realizes that he never really loved her, she disappears and he hasn’t been able to reach her at all. But he has continued to work at the company while he waits for her. And he is shocked when he sees Mi Gyeong again and finds out she works at the lab.
Kim Ga Eun as Lee Ong Ju
Lee Ong Ju is Mi Gyeong’s best friend and roommate. She is a romance novelist with an active imagination. But when she decides to start dating Mi Gyeong’s younger brother, Hwan Gyeong, she fears that her new relationship could interfere with her friendship.
Shin Hyun Seung as Kim Hwan Gyeong
Kim Hwan Gyeong is Mi Gyeong’s younger brother. Hwan Gyeong runs a country guest house to make a living, and allows Mi Gyeong and Ong Ju to live with him in the main house. Hwan Gyeong has always had a crush on Ong Ju, but every time he has confessed his feelings for her, she has turned him down. But when she suddenly shows her interest, he is quick to make their relationship official, even if he has to hide it from his sister.
3 things i loved about the potato Lab
1.
Mi Gyeong’s Dad:
We didn’t get to see him nearly enough, but I enjoyed Mi Gyeong’s dad’s character. Interesting to show a parent who followed his own heart, even if it was difficult for his children to understand. I wish we could have seen a bit more of how that situation came about.
2.
Baek Ho’s Growth:
While I felt like Mi Gyeong didn’t grow or change much during the course of this drama, I loved how Baek Ho really reflected on himself and his professional choices. His character growth made the whole show worthwhile.
3.
Ong Ju:
Ong Ju was so cute as the dirty-minded writer. Her character was silly but strangely endearing. And I liked how she interacted with Mi Gyeong. They really felt like the kind of old friends who you adore one minute and want to kill in the next!
3 things i didn’t love about the potato Lab
1.
Gi Se:
Honestly, Gi Se deserved way worse than he got. I’m not sure why the show would even try to redeem his character toward the end. What he did to Mi Gyeong seems pretty unforgiveable to me. And he hasn’t exactly treated Baek Ho well either, for someone who is supposed to be his friend.
2.
Hui Jin:
Hui Jin had so many important roles in this drama. She was Baek Ho’s best friend, Ki Se’s wife, and the woman who purposely stole Mi Gyeong’s fiance. Yet half the time, you barely remember she exists. I mean, she is supposed to be staying with Baek Ho, and yet with all those scenes in his room, we never see her. What a waste of a potentially great character.
3.
Baek Ho’s Past:
I would have liked to see more about Baek Ho’s past. How did he go from scholarship recipient to Hee Jin’s best friend and the Chairwoman’s favorite? It felt like part of Baek Ho’s motivation for doing that thankless job was that he felt indebted to the family, but they never showed us enough to understand that.
The Conclusion of 'The Potato Lab'
The Ending
‘The Potato Lab’ gives us a happy ending all around. There is a potato shortage crisis that allows our lab team to pull together and shine. It also gives Baek Ho and Mi Gyeong the excuse to work together and talk out their feelings. In the end, crisis is averted and our happy couple have made the first steps in reconciliation. And we find out Hui Dong is actually agriculture royalty, so our team should be just fine without Mi Gyeong. Hee Jin finally goes to Gi Se with divorce papers and the pair agree to divorce. And Baek Ho decides to quit his job and strike out on his own with Mi Gyeong by his side.
Three years later, we find our happy couples still together. Ong Ju and Hwan Gyeong are well, although Ong Ju is suffering from a fatty liver. Mi Gyeong has succeeded in cultivating her own potato variety, and she is giving her old lab team a run for their money. And she is back in college taking classes. Baek Ho is working several jobs, including the CFO of the guest house. The final scene shows the lab team making a presentation to the local farmers before Baek Ho and Mi Gyeong come in to help haggle over the price of potatoes.
My Personal Thoughts and Ratings
‘The Potato Lab’ is a breezy romantic comedy. The quirky cast of country researchers is amusing and Kang Tae Oh is absolutely charming as the company executive known for his ability to cut costs without letting his personal feelings interfere. The romance is sweet and the story is engaging and simple.
I found the humor a bit obvious and cringy, particlarly at the beginning. Parts of the plot felt underdeveloped and too cliche, and the characters’ action sometimes lacked consistency. It’s not a complex plot with deep character development, but this is a fun drama if you are looking for a sweet, uncomplicated love story. I give ‘The Potato Lab’ a 7 out of 10.
