Plot Overview of 'When the Phone Rings'

'When the Phone Rings': The Mysterious Caller

A handsome Presidential Spokesman and a non-verbial sign language interpreter share a marriage of convenience.  And although their union has profited both families, after three year the couple’s relationship is still strained and distant.  But when a mysterious blackmailer enters the scene, they find themselves unexpectedly drawn together.  And as secrets are revealed, they find their relationship runs much deeper than they ever imagined.

Meet the leads

Yoo Yeon Seok as Baek Sa Eon

A Comprehensive Look at When the Phone Rings 2024

Baek Sa Eon worked his way up from war correspondent and television announcer to become the youngest Presidential Spokesman.  But behind his smooth charisma and polished personality is a child with a dark secret and an aching need for love and affirmation. When his parents plan to marry him off to the most prestigious bidder, he uses the situation to strike a bargain and marry the woman’s younger sister, Hong Hui Ju, who he has been secretly in love with since his childhood.  In order to protect her, he has hidden her face and identity from the public.

But when she is kidnapped by a man with a grudge against Sa Eon and his family, Sa Eon is forced to reveal pieces of the truth in order to keep her safe.  And the more he reveals, the closer it brings him to his beautiful wife.  Suddenly, Sa Eon allows himself to dream of a future removed from the shackles of his family and position, with her at his side.

Baek Sa Eon is respected and admired.  His one true job in life is to make his parents look good no matter what.  But the weight of pretending to be someone he is not has plagued him most of his life, and he would love nothing more than to escape his demanding parents and their suffocating wealth and life style.  Despite some negative press, I have always really loved Yoo Yeon Seok and I always enjoy watching him.  I loved the emotional vulnerability he brought to this role and I think he played the part perfectly as the dotingly shy husband.

Chae Soo Bin as Hong Hui Ju

A Comprehensive Look at When the Phone Rings 2024

Hong Hui Ju lost her father and brother to a tragic car accident when she was just a child.  Desperate for financial security, her mother sets her sights on a new husband; a wealthy owner of a newspaper with a deaf daughter.  To win his sympathy, Hui Ju’s mom devises a plan to tell everyone that the shock of the accident left Hui Ju unable to speak.  Having daughters with similar health struggles accomplishes exactly what her mother had hoped, landing her a rich husband, and leaving Hui Ju in a silent prison she can never leave.

Hui Ju ends up married to Sa Eon for the good of their families.  So when she is kidnapped and ends up with the kidnappers high tech phone, she decides to pose as the kidnapper herself in order to escape her unhappy marriage.  But as the situation unfolds, she begins to see a new side to her cold and distant husband and she soon realizes that her marriage was never as “fake” as she believed.

Hong Hui Ju is sensitive and cautious, but behind her calm exterior is a will of steel and a determination.  And when she sees a chance to escape the prison of her unhappy marriage, she is all in.  Her fearless resolve is only shaken when she realizes that she and Sa Eon actually love each other.  Chae Soo Bin is a great actress and the chemistry she has with Yoo Yeon Seok is one of the things that made this drama so enjoyable to watch.  She also did a beautiful job of using sign language to express her emotions clearly and realistically.

What I Loved About the Drama

Hui Ju

Everyone talks about Hui Ju’s character development like she started out as a wilting flower.  But I love her spunk from the very beginning.  I mean, she went toe to toe with her kidnapper, stole his phone, and then used it to demand a divorce.  True, she has been a quiet dutiful wife and daughter up until now. But that strength has obviously always been there, just looking for an avenue to assert itself.  Also major kudos to Chae Soo Bin for learning sign language to play this role!

Do Jae's full redemption Arc

I really liked the development of Do Jae in this drama.  In the very beginning, I thought he was adorable.  But then we learn he is in on the plan to hurt Sa Eon and he becomes a villain, although still slightly pitiable.  But then he learns the truth, repents for his mistake, and helps Sa Eon bring the true villain to justice.  And in the end, we come full circle, with him next to Sa Eon, once again his trusted side-kick.  This is exactly how a full range redemption arc should look and I loved it.

Cinematography

This drama uses the camera work to full advantage, to really help bring out the emotions of the scenes.  One of my favorite techniques was the overemphasis of both Sa Eon’s wedding ring and the phones.  These two inanimate objects are center stage for so many scenes, as a constant reminder of the bond of our leads and their struggle to communicate honestly.  The lighting, the angles, and the perspective all played a part in telling the story and heightening our emotional responses to it.

critiques of 'When the Phone Rings'

Weakest Points of the Drama

I Na

I Na is a strange character for me.  I’m not really sure what her purose was for most of the drama.  Besides being the original fiance of Sa Eon, she didn’t make much sense to me.  The whole, “I’m healed, so now you should talk too” thing was really weird.  I thought she might be an interesting roadblock to Hui Ju and Sa Eon’s relationship, but in the end, all she did was give Hui Ju some bad advice, which Hui Ju ignored.  Her character felt illogical and unnecessary to me.

Secondary Romance

I liked the characters of Sang U and Yu Ri well enough.  Their role in investigating the fire was a fun side story.  And their crushes on Hui Ju and Sa Eon fit the plot fine.  But I never really felt like I got to know their characters that much and their romance felt too flat to me.  It’s nice that they decided to get married in the end, but I didn’t really feel invested in their relationship at all.

Bizarre Ending

I don’t even know what to say about this ending.  First they jerk us around and make it look like Sa Eon is dead.  And then suddenly we are in the jungles of the Argan Republic, with Sa Eon single handedly fighting rebels.  Yes, there is some vague mention of Sa Eon’s military career, but nothing that would indicate he intended to go back.  This whole sequence left me shaking my head and trying to figure out how we got here and what I missed.  It definitely is not how I thought we would be spending our final episode with this lovely couple.

Conclusion of 'When the Phone Rings'

Unraveling the Ending

‘When the Phone Rings’  dives deep into the unknown before bringing us in for this hard fought happy ending.  First, we find out that rather than being shot like it first appeared, the kidnapper shared a chilling secret before being killed by the police; Sa Eon’s adopted parents are the ones responsible for Hui Ju’s father and brother’s deaths.  This sends Sa Eon into a guilty spiral that causes him to disappear as soon as he knows Hui Ju is safe from her injuries.

But rather than wait for him to find her again, as Sa Eon had always promised, Hui Ju tracks him to the Argan Republic after a donation is given to a sign language school there in her name.  The couple have a happy jungle reunion and decide to remarry.

With the full story of the real Sa Eon made public, Sa Eon’s adopted mother has been sent to prison and his father lost the election and all the power and prestige he has worked for.  In light of all that, Sa Eon decides to start fresh with a new name and career path.

Hui Ju becomes a sign language announcer, as she has always dreamed.  She reached out to tell her mother about her marraige and it seems like it’s not too late for them to fix their relationship.  Sa Eon becomes an international hostage negotiator.  And the couple invite their friends over for a nice party at their perfectly average new home.  Sang U and Yu Ri announce their engagement and Hui Ju and Sa Eon seem like happy little love birds. It seems like all is well.

Personal Reflections and Rating

Final Thoughts and Overall Rating

‘When the Phone Rings’ is a romantic mystery thriller.  The leads play their roles perfectly and their chemistry is great.  The twists and turns are exciting and the story and characters are well developed and interesting.  I enjoyed watching the sign language and loved how it emphasized the importance of honest communication.  The balance between romance and mystery is good and the cinematography really help enhance the moods and emotions.

But as is often the case with mystery thrillers, the plot can be pretty far-fetched.  Be prepared to suspend your disbelief if you are going to enjoy this one.  Also, no spoilers here, but this drama has one of the weirdest final episodes I have ever seen in a Korean drama.  I definitely enjoyed watching it, and would have probably rated it higher before watching the ending.  But if you want a suspenseful romance, I would absolutely recommend this one.  ‘When the Phone Rings’ an 8 out of 10 ramen.
