Plot Overview

'My Sweet Mobster': A Love Story About Love and Second Chances

A bright children’s video creator called Mini meets a prickly CEO who is a former mob boss.  And when she suddenly finds herself both jobless and homeless, he invites her to stay in a room at his house, along with a group of his ex-con employees.  As their romance begins to bloom, pieces of his past will threaten both of their lives. And to make matters worse, a rival, who has secretly admired Mini for years through her “WeTube” channel, hopes to come between them.  But the key to winning Mini’s heart may lie in her search to find her childhood first love.

Meet the leads

Uhm Tae Goo as Seo Ji Wan

A Comprehensive Look at My Sweet Mobster 2024

Seo Ji Wan is the CEO of a food distributing company called Thirsty Deer. He is the son of a gang boss, but Ji Won left criminal activity to run his business.  He employs and lives with a group of ex-cons who want to turn their lives around.

Ji Wan meets, Eun Ha, a bright children’s programming creator, and is unexpectedly drawn to her.  And as he finds himself falling for her, he realizes that they share a surprising connection from their past.  But when his gangster father is released from prison, Ji Wan suddenly fears that he could lose all of the people that he loves, and he worries that he doesn’t have any way to protect them.

Seo Ji Wan was traumatized by his violent father.  Because of this, he has become a quiet loner who has a difficult time opening up to people.  But Eun Ha manages to break through those walls and help Ji Wan see that he is a good person who is deserving of love, support, and friendship.  Uhm Tae Goo was so fun as this awkward, sweet character.  He fit the role well and I loved to see Ji Wan develop through the series.

Han Sun Hwa as Go Eun Ha (Mini)

A Comprehensive Look at My Sweet Mobster 2024

Go Eun Ha grew up as a lonely child, but one special friend helped her through some of her darkest times.  And although she lost contact with him, she has spent her whole life looking for him.  But his friendship shaped her decision to become a friend to lonely children through her internet channel.

So when she loses her job and her home because of a misunderstanding at work, she is devastated.  But after she meets a bristly CEO and ends up staying with him and his ex-con employees, they help her keep her dreams alive and accept her as part of their close-knit family.

Go Eun Ha is cheerful and loving.  And her positive personality is just what Ji Wan and his merry band of misfits need in their lives.  She sees the good, not just in Ji Wan, but in all the Thirsty Deer members.  I liked Han Sun Hwa in this role, and I felt like it was a good match for her.   But I feel like her character doesn’t have much growth.  She is pretty much the exact same character at the end that she was in the beginning.

Secondary Characters

Exploring the Supporting Cast

Kwon Yul as Jang Hyeon U

Jang Hyeon U is a prosecutor who has been a long-time fan of Eun Ha through her channel.  So when he has the opportunity to meet her through a case, he is thrilled.  And when he finds out that she is involved with the ex-criminal Seo Ji Wan, he vows to win her heart and protect her from him.  So when Eun Ha mistakes him from her old childhood friend, he is reluctant to correct her mistake.

Kim Hyun Jin as Ju Il Yeong

Ju Il Yeong is a young lawyer who was raised by Ji Wan like a younger brother.  He works for the Thirsty Deer and is devoted to his boss and the company.  He also lives in the employee house.  When Il Yeong meets Eun Ha’s best friend, Mi Ho, the pair have a one night stand.  But although the guys see Il Yeong as a “lady’s man”, he has never been in a relationship before and he isn’t sure how to handle it.

Moon Ji In as Koo Mi Ho

Koo Mi Ho has been Eun Ha’s best friend since they were young.  Mi Ho’s family took Eun Ha in and has always treated her like one of their own.  But Mi Ho spends a night with Il Yeong and ends up pregnant, she isn’t sure how to tell her friend.  And when Il Yeong says their night together was a mistake, she wonders what to do next.

Highlights of 'My Sweet Mobster'

What I Loved About the Drama

Penguin Theme

The whole emperor penguin theme in this drama was cute and original without being overdone.  It could have easily gone cheesy, but instead I found it endearing and sweet.  It showed Ji Wan’s willingness to try to find ways to relate to people, even if it came through nature documentaries.

Dad Resolution

I thought this drama handled Ji Wan’s closure with his dad well.  It wouldn’t have made sense for his dad to just suddenly accept his son’s choices with open arms.  Instead, we see him grudgingly let him go, because it is the most he can give him.

Ju Il Yeong

I really fell for Kim Hyun Jin in this drama.  The character of Il Yeong was a great addition to the story.    I loved his interactions with both Ji Wan and Mi Ho.  He showed interesting character growth and looked adorable doing it.

Weakest Points of the Drama

Tone Shift

This drama stayed light and fun through most of the series, but seemed to take a sudden shift into the dark and violent for the last couple episodes.  It’s not that I mind a bit of dark drama, but it didn’t seem to fit well with the rest of this one.  Maybe if the shift had felt a bit more gradual, it would have been more consistent, but as it was, it seemed jarring.

Gang Story

There were enough side stories in this series that I don’t really think the gang rivalry story was necessary.  The rivalry between Ji Wan and Go Yang Hui would have existed even without the Meow Group fights.  What was happening between the gangs themselves just isn’t really that interesting.

Jang Hyeon U

I felt like Jang Hyeon U didn’t get a decent closure for his story.  Instead, we see him still pining for Eun Ha.  His character journey was decent but then he just kind of fades into the woodwork without any promise of a happy future.  I would have liked some little hint that he has good things ahead as well.

Conclusion of 'My Sweet Mobster'

Unraveling the Ending

‘My Sweet Mobster’ concludes with a happy ending for our Thirsty Deer crew. But first, we get the anticipated showdown between Ji Wan and his dad.  And when Yang Hui shows up to kill the boss, Ji Wan is stabbed trying to save him. He falls into a coma, but luckily he wakes up soon after.  Once he wakes up, his father confesses to his crimes, thankful his son is still alive.  And he takes Yang Hui down with him.

Hyeon U wraps up the case and continues to watch and support Eun Ha through her show.  Mi Ho and Il Yeong decide to get married and raise the baby together.  A jump ahead shows them as a happy little family, living with Mi Ho’s parents.  Ji Wan finally proposes to Eun Ha, and of course, she accepts.  The ending scene shows Eun Ha, with all the guys, on their way to an event for Eun Ha’s show.

Personal Reflections and Rating

Final Thoughts and Overall Rating

‘My Sweet Mobster’ is a cute rom-com that explores second chances and the possibility of rehabilitating criminals.  I was pleasantly surprised that this depth of theme made the drama more than just a fluffy modern Snow White tale.  The characters work through some complicated issues while mostly keeping the story light and fun.  The all-star cast did a wonderful job of creating believable relationships and touching interactions.  I especially enjoyed Uhm Tae Goo as the Male Lead.

Of course, as a classic rom-com, you can say that the plot was pretty predictable and the humor did get a bit over the top for me at times.  But even so, I found myself laughing along with the ex-con employees and rooting for their character’s future success.   I give ‘My Sweet Mobster’ an 8 out of 10 ramen.
