The Story
A criminal profiler is pulled back into his painful past when he is called to work on a serial killer case he investigated 33 years ago. The case rocked his small town community and tore apart his family. Now he has a chance to cleanse his conscience and clear an innocent man's name. But it will require him to work with the real killer and his childhood nemesis, and there are those who don't want to see the truth come to light.
Should I Watch
'The Scarecrow' is a chillingly realistic crime thriller based on the real-life Hwaseong serial murders. The story is told largely through vintage 1980's flashbacks in a rural farming community. The veteran cast, led by Park Hae Soo and Lee Hee Jun, is fabulous. The writers strike a nice balance between honest storytelling and somber respect for the true victims and their families. And as the actual cases did back in 1986 - 1991, the drama will lead you to draw false assumptions and fall for tempting red herrings before the true events are actually revealed.Β
But this is more psychological thriller than action drama. If you are looking for daring fight scenes and brutal on-screen murders, you may be bored by this more subtle approach. It's much more focused on showing the greed and corruption of those behind the scenes then the murders themselves. Although there isn't much violence actually shown, I did find the murder scenes hauntingly creepy. For the faint of heart, this may leave you avoiding farm roads for a long time to come. For me, the story and it's complex characters left a lasting impression. I give 'The Scarecrow' a 5 out of 5 ramen.
