The Story

A young man from a poor family rises through the ranks of the legal system and finds himself siding with the corrupt and greedy to get ahead. But one day he is killed by a powerful enemy and finds himself  transported 10 years into the past, with all of his past memories intact. Now he will have a chance to go back and become the person he had always hoped to be. And this time, maybe he can bring some justice back into the world of law and politics.

The Leads

Ji Sung as Lee Han Yeong

Lee Han Yeong originally studied law because he believed in justice and the merits of the legal system. As he works his way through the system, he quickly learns that the law is more about power and corruption than justice. Slowly he leaves behind his naive ideals for privilege and success. When Han Yeong is framed for murder and then killed, he realizes in his final moments, the many mistakes he made. But when he wakes up a short time later and finds he has been taken back 10 years into the past, he decides to right the many wrongs he committed the first time around.

Armed with the knowledge he has from his first life, Han Yeong sets out to overturn impactful court cases and cut the roots out from under Kang Sin Jin and the powerful organization Suojae, who were responsible for Han Yeong's death and many of the crimes Han Yeong was complicit in. And as Han Yeong progresses in his efforts to rebalance the scales in favor of truth and justice, he will gather a team of friends and colleagues who share his passion for the law and the need to protect the powerless.

Lee Han Yeong does not start out as a moral or overly-likable character. He has used his connections and  position to take care of his own needs, without any thought for the victims who may be hurt in the process. But after he is given a second chance, his priorities shift. However, many of his actions are still morally gray. He is not a perfect hero, but his effort to improve make him admirable. I always love Ji Sung. And honestly, this kind of smug, cheeky character is perfect for him.

Won Jin A as Kim Jin A

Kim Jin A grew up with a single father who willing framed Han Yeong's father for a crime his father didn't commit, with the help of Kang Sin Jin. Watching that situation, and what it did to her father over time, Jin A became determined to root out corruption and work for justice. She becomes a struggling public prosecutor who proves herself to have skill and moral integrity. But she is also distrustful of the people within the system, especially those who have gained success.

When Jin A first meets Han Yeong, she treats him as an enemy. But as he convinces her to work with him and his other friends, she sees that they share a common motive to bring down Kang Sin Jin. And meeting like-minded people who want to do the right thing helps Jin A heal from some of the wounds of her past and believe that she is not alone in her desire to restore justice to the legal system.

Kim Jin A is driven and morally rigid. She tends to be analytical and emotionally reserved, mostly due to her difficult childhood and her first-hand experience with legal corruption. But as she grows closer to Han Yeong and the others who are helping him, we see her gain confidence in herself and others. The guilt she has carried because of her father's action is slowly replaced with a renewed sense of purpose in her job. Won Jin A tends to play these kinds of quiet, reserved characters. She is a competent actress, but I seldom find myself blown away by her performances. And for me this role was no different.

The Supporting Characters

Park Hee Soon as Kang Sin Jin

Kang Sin Jin is a veteran Judge of the Seoul Central District Court. He is a power-hungry judge who secretly hopes to one day take over Suojae. He is the one responsible for having Han Yeong's father put in prison and many of the other crimes Han Yeong is trying to expose.

Tae Won Seok as Seok Jeong Ho

Seok Jeong Ho is Han Yeong's childhood best friend. He is the owner of Dajul Cash, and although he always tries to do what is morally right, he is not concerned about how lawful his means are. Before Han Yeong's "death", they had drifted apart, but he will become his right-hand man on his road to redemption.

Kim Tae Woo as Baek I Seok

Baek I Seok is the Chief Judge at the South Chungcheong District Court, where Han Yeong also works. He is a mentor to Han Yeong, and his seniority in the system makes him a powerful ally. He is known for his integrity and his efforts not to get tangled up in the corruption and power-games of many of his superiors.

Things I Like

Yoo Se Hui

As much as I didn't love Han Yeong's ex, Se Hui through the majority of this drama, I liked what they did with her redemption arc. They didn't try to put her and Han Yeong back together, and they didn't miraculously turn her into some virtuous heroine, but she did show us, and Han Yeong, that she was making an effort to become a better person. That, I can get behind.

Seok Jeong Ho

I loved the chemistry between Jeong Ho and Han Yeong. Jeong Ho brings equal amounts of charisma and humor to this line up, and I really enjoyed watching his antics. Also, the subtle romantic chemistry between he and Na Yeon was fun to watch develop.

Han Yeong's Parents

Han Yeong's parents are also great characters. Surely with all that had happened to them in the past, they could have been bitter and angry. But instead they were loving and accepting of anyone Han Yeong brought over. I was so happy when Han Yeong was able to save his mom the second time around. Who even cares about the butterfly effect!

Things I Didn't Like

Why and How

It's become common in time travel dramas to totally avoid explaining how or why they actually got sent back into the past. In this case, it would be easy to assume it was Han Yeong's second chance to make the right choices. But at least 'Again My Life' gave us a vengeful Grim Reaper to explain his "rebirth". This one gives us nothing.

Kang Sin Jin Eating

By the end of this drama, I was really sick of watching Kang Sin Jin greedily devour any food in sight. I get the bit. He has a voracious appetite for all things; power, money, and even food. And the psychological mind games were interesting. But I just don't want to have to watch it over and over again.

 The Cycle of Evil

This drama is keeping it real. And in reality, the depths of greed and corruption in most legal and political arenas isn't going to be eradicated by one zealous judge. But it is kind of a bummer to watch Han Yeong go through all of that, only to have a whole new group back together in short order. It makes it all feel so hopeless. And don't even get me started on that plot twist that included Baek I Seok at the table. What a disappointment!

The Ending

'The Judge Returns' gives us lots of open endings with a bittersweet tone. But first the good news. Working together as a team, Han Yeong and his allies are able to expose Suojae and S Group for all of their crimes, with the ring leaders ending up in prison. After a live broadcast trial, Sin Jin receives the death penalty. Kwak Soon Won stays loyal to Sin Jin, even after he hears Sin Jin order his murder. But in the end, he is caught and arrested as well.

Jin A goes to dinner at Han Yeong's and finally confesses to his family that her father was the one who framed Han Yeong's dad. And of course, they put her at ease, offering their forgiveness and acceptance. Could this be the start of a romantic spark? We may never know, but she and Han Yeoung have definitely built a partnership that isn't likely to end any time soon. Se Hui does betray Han Yeong, but once S Group is saved, she decides to go back to school so that she can take over one day, hopefully on a more moral grounding. Han Yeong watches her from afar, and it seems all is forgiven from his perspective. Na Yeon quits her job to work as an independent journalist. And she strikes up a new partnership with Jeong Ho that definitely feels like the start of something romantic.

Han Yeong goes to visit Sin Jin in prison and brings him a batch of his mom's dumplings. Han Yeong doesn't seem to take much pleasure in seeing him behind bars. In the end, he has come to realizes that if the system is corrupt, there will always be those who are lured in by the promise of power and money. And one final scene puts the period on that sentiment, as we see Suojae back in session. While many of the faces are new, nothing much has really changed. And as the camera moves around the table to the end seat, we see Baek I Seok sitting comfortable with the figureheads of corruption.

Should I Watch

'The Judge Returns' is a time-travel legal drama that focuses on corruption and justice. Ji Sung gives another impassioned performance that gives us great courtroom scenes with a nice amount of revenge. The secondary cast has some memorable characters and the pace is fairly fast and steady. I appreciated the balance between interesting legal cases and personal character development.

But this plot concept is certainly not new. If you found this summary sounding like a mash up between the 2022 dramas "Again My Life' and 'Reborn Rich' you would be absolutely right. The villains feel one-dimensional and fairly predictable. And the vague nod to romance seemed unsatisfactory and forced. But if you like a good second-chance revenge story, Ji Sung never disappoints.    I give 'The Judge Returns' a 3 out of 5 ramen.
