After being cursed by an evil spirit, a young crown prince is forced to live a double life. While his true self is a shy, sensitive man who would rather design and create beautiful clothing than train to be a king, his “alter-ego” is brash and egotistical, and excels at activities like fighting and hunting. Each time the prince falls asleep, he wakes up as the other personality.

But when a beautiful assassin shows up, both personalities take an interest in her, and each personality begins to devise ways to eliminate the other so they can be with her forever. And amid this personal strife, following the death of the King, a heated political battle for the throne heats up between the crown prince, his half brother, and the political factions that support each side. With battles raging, both inside and out, the crown prince will need to figure out who his true allies are.

‘Love Song for Illusion’ is a fascinating historical drama that blends supernatural shamanism with psychological themes. Park Ji Hoon does a nice job of portraying this dual role. The female lead is strong and independent and her backstory goes well with the overall plot. The story is unique and uses interesting visual scenes to represent mental health.

But the story can feel a bit slow at points. Also, in an effort to distinguish two very different personalities, Park Ji Hoon’s portrayals can feel a bit over the top at times. The plot often veres off the main story, making the drama feel a bit meandering at time. But I enjoyed the fun historical setting and the complex characters. I give ‘Love Song for Illusion’ an 8 out of 10.
