Personal Insights

My Thoughts on 'Oasis'

‘Oasis’ is a historical romantic drama about fated love and enduring friendships.  1980’s and 90’s dramas have become popular lately, and this one does a nice job of capturing the political unrest of the time.  There is a gritty, noir feel that fits well with the themes.  There is some action, some romance, and plenty of emotional moments.  And the injustice suffered by the leads is touchingly gut-wrenching.

But unlike similar dramas like “Youth of May’ or ‘Snowdrop, this drama chooses the tropes of melodrama and birth secrets over any fresh perspective.  At times, the heavy emotions overshadow the gritty politics and action, turning the historical drama into more of a timeless melodrama.  And the choices by some of the characters are likely to make you want to throw things at the screen.  Be warned!  But I enjoyed the drama for its engaging story and characters, and I do love a good emotional rollercoaster. I give ‘Oasis’ a 7 out of 10 ramen.
