Personal Insights

My Thoughts on Bad Prosecutor

‘Bad Prosecutor’ is a fun, high-adrenaline crime action drama. They let Doh Kyung Soo (D.O from the K-Pop group EXO) do his own stunts, and the fact that he is having the time of his life doing it is absolutely obvious. The drama takes a while to set up, but the fight scenes keep things entertaining through some of the slower sections.  I enjoyed the chaotic antics of the lead and the interactions between him and the other characters had a casual chemistry that worked well.

The drama wisely avoided all but the most subtle of romantic sparks between the leads, which kept the story focus on the main investigation plot.  But if you are familiar with this style of political corruption drama, you won’t find much new or unexpected in this story.  The character development is weak and the story is often implausible, but it’s a fun watch that doesn’t require much deep thought.  And D.O’s charm is definitely infectious.   I give ‘Bad Prosecutor’ an 8 out of 10 ramen.

Story Summary

Plot Overview

After 3 years of marriage, a couple find themselves on the verge of divorce.  Their extremely opposite personalities have made their relationship increasingly difficult to bear, and they just aren’t sure it is worth it anymore.  As they wrestle with this new stage in their relationship, the husband meets his first love and her “husband’.  And the two couples develop an unusual and unlikely friendship that gives them each a sounding board, as they spend their time together talking about love, family, and marriage.  Each one will face important choices about their wants and needs, and what they hope for their own futures.

Personal Insights

My Review and Rating

‘Matrimonial Chaos’ is a refreshing romantic drama about the complexities of modern relationships.  This drama is not the casual rom-com it may appear at first glance.   It is a realistic portrayal of complicated characters and the struggles of marriage. It does a nice job of combining quirky humor with indepth conversations that tackled emotional issues and thoughts.  The characters are well-developed, and the dialogue is extremely well-written.

But for some, this focus on conversations may not hold your interest.  The story is very slow moving and prefers talking about situations rather than actually showing them.  At times, the action itself is almost non-existent.  But this cast is excellent, so if you enjoy slow-paced, realistic, character driven stories, this one is definitely worth a watch.  I give ‘Matrimonial Chaos’ an 8 out 10 ramen.

General Information

All You Need to Know About 'Korea-Khitan War'

Air Date: 11/11/23 – 3/10/24

Episodes: 32

Where to Watch: Viki

Genre: Historical Military Drama

Starring: Kim Dong Jun and Choi Soo Jong

Plot Summary

A Tale of Valor and Strategy

A young man rises from humble beginnings to become the King of Goryeo during a tumultuous time of war with the Khitans of the Liao Dynasty.  With the help of one honest and out-spoken official, he will try to find a way to free his country from foreign rule and protect his people at the same time.  But the price of war will sit heavily on his conscious and he will learn the difficulties of leadership and the burden of sacrifice.  Together, the King and his military commander will devise a strategy in the hopes of bringing peace to their tired nation and ending a 26 year old war.

Personal Insights and Rating

‘Korea-Khitan War’ is a historical drama created to commemorate the 50th anniversary of KBS Network. It is based off a novel by Gil Seung Soo called  “Goryeo-Khitan War: Sweet Rain in The Winter”.  It focuses on the King and his close relationship with his military commander. These anniversary dramas are known for their large budgets, epic style, and all-star cast, and this one is no exception.  With 32 total episodes, the characters and the story are well-developed and engaging, and the battle scenes are impressive in scale and cinematic style.  The drama not only showcases the strategic military maneuvers but also delves into the personal lives and struggles of the characters. This duality makes the series both entertaining and thought-provoking.

But the warning at the beginning of the drama should be a red flag for all history buffs.  While based on historical fact, there is plenty of artistic license taken.  The author himself has expressed adamant concern that, especially in the second half of this drama, the departure from both the historical facts and the original text are glaring.  But if you don’t mind your historical entertainment laced with a considerable amount of “fiction”, this one is a touching story about love, friendship, and the price of leadership.  I give ‘Korea Khitan War’ an 8 out of 10 ramen.

The Secret Romance in Hagwon 7/31/24

Drama Story Summary

A Tale of Love and Judgment

An influential cram school academy teacher is reunited with her first student when he comes to teach alongside her.  And as they work together, their close bond deepens.  But when the instructor becomes the target of a ruthless rival, they will face judgment and opposition from co-workers and parents that may threaten the very existence of the school she has worked so hard to build.  Now they will have to tread carefully as they try to find a way to protect all the things they love the most to them, including each other.

“If you’re able to read, you think. If you’re able to think, you get curious. If you get curious, you’ll end up studying on your own.” – Lee Jun Ho

My Personal Insights and Rating

‘The Midnight Romance in Hagwon’ is a slow-paced romantic drama that focuses on the world of after-school education.  It paints an interesting picture of the politics and cut-throat competitiveness of cram academies and their place in the educational system in Korea that I found fascinating.  I also appreciated the mature relationship and slow-burn chemistry between the leads, and the idea of being willing to stand up for something you really believe in, even if it challenges long-standing social stigmas.

But the teacher student relationship does brings up questions of the misuse of authority for some, even if he is now an adult.  And, this slice of life tempo isn’t for everyone. So, if this slow burn, noona-style romance bothers you, then I would skip this one.  I give ‘The Midnight Romance in Hagwon’ a 8 out of 10 ramen.

The Fascinating Land of Memories 7/24/24

‘In a world where memories can be eternal, what would you choose to remember?’

Plot Summary

A Glimpse into 'Yonder'

In the 2030’s, shortly after assisted suicide becomes legal in Korea, a man helps his wife to die with dignity at her request.  When he receives a mysterious message from his deceased wife shortly after her death, inviting him to a place called Yonder, he assumes it is some sick mistake.

But when he meets others who visit Yonder, he discovers an alternate world  created by a famous “doctor”,  that exists from the memories of loved ones we have lost.  And as questions about the ethicality of Yonder surface in the media, he will be forced to make a choice about what defines life and what he is willing to give up to be with his wife again.

Final Thoughts

'Yonder': A Journey Beyond

‘Yonder’ is a slow, thought-provoking drama that delves into the complexities of life, death, and what lies beyond. At 6 short episodes, it feels more like an extended movie than a full drama of developed characters.  But the concept is fresh and I found myself thinking about it long after I had finished the drama itself.  The cinematography is sweeping and beautiful.  I give ‘Yonder’ a 7 out of 10 ramen.

Unraveling 'Chief Detective 1958'

Story Summary

Rooting Out Corruption One Villain at a Time

In 1958, a passionate detective known for having the highest arrest rate for cattle thieves in his small town, transfers to Seoul.  But crime fighting in the big city is not exactly what he expects.  And if he is going to put a stop to the wide-spread corruption the police force has become known for, he will have to put together a team of like-minded individuals who aren’t afraid to row against the tide.

'Chief Detective 1958' is zany comedy and action crime fighting at their finest.

Personal Reflection and Rating

My Impressions

‘Chief Detective 1958’ is the prequel to the crime drama ‘Chief Detective’ that ran in Korea from 1971- 1989.  The drama draws on wacky, over the top humor and good, old-fashion crime fighting.  The rag-tag team of detective have great chemistry together and the short 10 episode format keeps the pace moving nicely.  Rather than focus on the mystery of “whodunnit” this drama is more concerned with the how of it all.

Watching the detectives find ways to expose the criminals with indisputable evidence is the real key. Lee Je Hoon has a knack for cheesy drama, and this does get extremely silly at times.  It also has some pretty far-fetched storylines.  But rather than give us a smooth, modern style prequel with fancy sets and solid, realistic storylines, this one embraces the retro, and has a lot of fun with it.   I give ‘Chief Detective 1958’  a solid 9 out of 10.

‘The Aytpical Family’ is a quirky fantasy romance drama that explores family and social dysfunction.  The fantasy superpower element is important to the story, but the relationships are at the real core of the message.  I really enjoyed the realistically flawed characters and their clumsy attempts to find healing in the midst of what can be a cold and uncaring world.  The constant leaps back in time did get confusing at points and all of the characters have the potential to be very unlikeable.  But I found the social commentary and the journey each character takes to grow interesting and rewarding. I give ‘The Atypical Family’ a 9 out of 10 ramen.

Personal Reflection

My Thoughts on Missing Crown Prince

Missing Crown Prince is a romantic historical drama that is a spin-off of the drama ‘Bossam: Steal the Fate”. It has a unique story and characters that I enjoyed, and the leads did a nice job.  The focus on family relationships and the royal family themselves, rather than only using them as instruments of palace intrigue, gave it a more human emphasis that was interesting.  Although I felt like the drama would have been better with fewer episodes and the chemistry between the leads was a bit flat.  I give “Missing Crown Prince’ an 8 out of 10 ramen.

Personal Impressions

Review of 'Lovely Runner'

‘Lovely Runner’ is a time-travel romance that follows one couple through multiple timescapes.  This drama has heart and personality plus, which has made it a fan favorite this year.  The love story is well-told and the leads’ chemistry was swoon-worthy.  Of course, it isn’t perfect.  In my opinion, the series could have been shorter, as I felt the story wandered a bit aimlessly in the middle.  And honestly the time loop rules were all over the place and full of holes.

But none of that seemed to matter, because the weaving of time jumps is so interesting and the story is absolutely engaging.  If you enjoy whimsical fantasy love stories, this one is a delight to watch.  I give ‘Lovely Runner’ a 10 out of 10 ramen.
