Story Summary

The Unlikely Demon Bodyguard

A 200 year old demon keeps eternal life by making contracts for the souls of desperate humans.  Contracted by God, his powers are channeled through a cross tattoo on the inside of his wrist.  One night, he finds himself trying to save a beautiful, young stranger.  And in the process, his tattoo is mysteriously transferred to her. Now he vows to stay by her side and keep her and his tattoo safe until he can find a way to get it back.  And luckily for her, a bodyguard is just what she needs as she deals with her greedy and dangerous family

“While it is true that external forces can lead people astray, all evil ultimately stems from human desires. So the fault cannot lie in the evil spirits alone.” – Jung Koo Won

Personal Reflection and Rating

A Beautiful Love Story

My Impressions

‘My Demon’ is a fantasy romance with an interesting premise.  The theme focuses on the role of evil in humanity and  facing the consequences of our choices.  This drama has some light-hearted humor to keep it from getting too dark.  The camera work is gorgeous and Song Kang is charming as the arrogant Demon.

Unfortunately, the mythology they created for the story leaves the drama riddled with plot holes.  And while Song Kang and Kim You Jung are beautiful people, there is far too much time spent on overly long close-ups instead of story telling.  With the exception of a few, the side characters were one-dimensional and annoyingly over-the-top.   I give ‘My Demon’ a 7 out of 10.

Personal Insights

My Thoughts on Bad Prosecutor

‘Romance in the House’ is a family drama that explores themes of second chances and forgiveness. Thanks to its tone and pacing, this one falls more into the romantic drama category than rom-com.  But there are plenty of silly moments.  The cast is talented and the reunion of the leads, who starred together back in 2013, is a fun touch.

Unfortunately, the plot just felt kind of average.  The blend of romance, family melodrama, comedy, and mystery all crammed into 12 episodes made the plot feel like a lackluster hodgepodge of dramas we have seen before;  particularly last year’s “Not Others”. For me, the bottom line is, this is not a bad drama.  I enjoyed it enough in the moment to keep watching.  But there was nothing especially memorable about it.    I give ‘Romance in the House’ a 7 out of 10 ramen.

Plot Summary

Personal Insights and Rating

Rating: 9/10

‘Jewel in the Palace’ is a classic historical drama based on the true story of a famous woman known as “The Great Jang Geum”.  This sweeping saga of her life story is beautifully told, and the extended scenes of traditional Korean cooking will leave your mouth watering.  It also offers some fascinating examples of traditional medicine and healing practices.

But at 54 full episodes, this is a drama that requires you to get comfortable and settle in for the long haul.  The story is slow and carefully told, and the romance is so slow-burn that by the time they get around to it, there isn’t much time left.  Also, the extended political intrigues and endless royal meetings can be a bit wearing after a while.  For me, the story was enjoyable and I loved the themes.  But don’t enter into this one thinking it’s a quick, easy watch.    I give ‘Jewel in the Palace’ an 9 out of 10 ramen.

What You Need to Know About About 'Gaus Electronics'

This zany business comedy originally appeared on ENA Genie TV. It was directed by Park Joon Soo, who also directed several documentaries about the K-Pop super group BTS, such as ‘Break the Silence: The Movie’ in 2020.

Air Date: September 30 – November 5, 2022

Episodes: 12

Where to Watch: Viki

Genre: Business Rom-Com

Starring: Kwak Dong Yeon and Go Sung Hee

Plot Summary

Chaos in the Work Place

Marketing Team 3 in the appliance department of Gaus Electronics is known more for their clumsy missteps than their career success.  In fact, joining this department is seen as a kind of company dead end.  But even so, the member’s continue to do their best.  So they are devastated when a rumor begins circulating that the company intends to dissolve the team for poor performance ratings.

With one last chance, the crew bands together in a desperate attempt to save their team and prove their worth to the company.  But when they begin to suspect someone within the company is leaking sensitive information to their biggest rival, Power Group, they realize there could be more at stake than just their small department.

Personal Reflection

My Personal Thoughts and Rating

‘Gaus Electronics’ is a business sit-com with a heavy dose of romance.  It offers a zany look at the life and career of an average office worker.  The cast chemistry is silly and good for some very funny moments.  The romance is surprisingly well done, without being the main focus. While there is an over-all story arc, the storyline is not overly complex, since this drama is more about the day to day life of the team members.  Some have compared it to a Korean version of ‘The Office’, minus the mockumentary style.

The humor is definitely over-the-top and a bit cheesy at times, but the cast pulls it off in a way that made me invested in their crazy hi-jinx.  For me, the charm of this drama is in the fact that it never takes itself too seriously.     I give “Gaus Electronics’ an 8 out of 10 ramen.

Story Summary

Plot Overview

After moving to the United States 10 years ago, while he was still a high school student, a genius businessman finally returns to Korea.  And on his first day back, he runs into his former classmate and first love, in a cafe.  But she runs away before he can reintroduce himself.  Luckily for him, fate seems to be on his side when he discovers that she lives and works in the same buildings as him.  Determined to take advantage of this second chance, he hopes to win her heart.  But the scars of her own first love and a traumatic childhood will prove a difficult hurdle to overcome.

Personal Insights

My Review and Rating

‘Serendipity’s Embrace’ is a short, 8 episode romantic drama that tells the story of first love and second chances.  It is sweet and binge-worthy.  The leads have a nice chemistry, there is a fair share of warmth and comedy, and the drama manages to fit an awful lot into 8 episodes.  We get some nice secondary characters and a relatively drama-free tale of romance.

Unfortunately, the multiple storylines are also its biggest weakness.  By trying to pack so much in, we lose some of the focus on the lead couple and their growth together.  All in all, this drama makes a nice, quick watch, the characters are likable and the story is pleasant.  But I wouldn’t say there is anything exceptional about it. The pieces were there, but it just came off feeling a bit ordinary and rushed for me. I give ‘Serendipity’s Embrace’ a 7 out 10 ramen.

Air Date: May 24 – July 6, 2024

Episodes: 14

Where to Watch: Viki

Genre: Crime Action Drama

Starring: Ji Sung and Jeon Mi Do

Story Summary

Plot Overview

A hard-working detective is suddenly kidnapped on his way home from a work party.  But when he wakes up 3 days later in a subway station, he finds his life has been turned upside-down.  He has become addicted to a dangerous new drug known as “lemon meth”, and one of his best friends from high school is dead from an apparent suicide.  And the more he investigates both circumstances, the more sure he becomes that both are related, and stem from an incident from his high school days.

But if he is going to keep his job, he is going to need to cover up his addiction until he can solve the mystery of what really happened to him and why.  Luckily, two other friends from his past will reconnect with him and come alongside him, to help bring the truth to light.

Personal Insights

My Thoughts on 'Connection'

‘Connection’ is a fast-moving crime drama with a tight plot and engaging story.  All 14 episodes keep a consistent, succinct pace that uses the most of every minute.   It has plenty of twists and turns on the way, and Ji Sung gives a stellar performance as the righteous detective trapped in a moral and professional dilemma.  The whole cast do a fabulous job of creating incredibly flawed, but very human, characters

This series commits to its themes from the very beginning, and does not ever swerve or lose its course.  This means that if you are a fan of criminal investigation dramas, this is a perfect choice.  For those who like their crime dramas speckled with a bit of levity, do not expect moments of romance or comedy to get thrown into this one to relieve the tension or give you a moment to process what’s happening.

But that is not to say this isn’t a relational drama.  The themes of friendship and loyalty are deeply explored in an intriguing and illuminating way.  I do wish the female characters would have been written with the same depth as the rest, thus my slightly lower rating.  But all in all, I found this to be an amazing watch.   I  give ‘Connection’ a 9 out of 10 ramen.

Personal Insights and Rating

Rating: 9/10

‘My Lovely Boxer’ is a romantic sports drama.  I really appreciated the complex characters, the unique theme, and the heartwarming story.  This is a charming, slow-burn drama that takes its characters through an intense emotional journey that highlights redemption and new beginnings.  Lee Sang Yeob gives an amazing performance as the shifty agent with a heart of gold.

But this drama isn’t for everyone.  It is purposefully slow paced and the trauma experienced by the leads isn’t always easy to watch, with subjects like emotional abuse and suicide.  There is a small amount of violence, both in and out of the ring, although it is not extreme. Also, the leads are 16 years apart as well as being in an agent/athlete relationship.  And while the romance and skinship is subtle, some people seem to have an issue with that.  But for me, it was an enjoyable series with genuine characters and a talented cast.  I give ‘My Lovely Boxer’ an 9 out of 10 ramen.

My Thoughts on 'My Sweet mobster'

My Personal Insights and Rating

‘My Sweet Mobster’ is a cute rom-com that explores second chances and the possibility of rehabilitating criminals.  I was pleasantly surprised that this depth of theme made the drama more than just a fluffy modern Snow White tale.  The characters work through some complicated issues while mostly keeping the story light and fun.  The all-star cast did a wonderful job of creating believable relationships and touching interactions.  I especially enjoyed Uhm Tae Goo as the Male Lead.

Of course, as a classic rom-com, you can say that the plot was pretty predictable and the humor did get a bit over the top for me at times.  But even so, I found myself laughing along with the ex-con employees and rooting for their character’s future success.   I give ‘My Sweet Mobster’ an 8 out of 10 ramen.

Personal Reflection and Rating

A Riveting Journey Through a Post-Apocalyptic World

My Impressions

‘Sweet Home’ Seasons 1-3 is a post-apocolyptic sci-fi action series that offers an interesting premise, a terrific cast, and an exciting, fast-paced story.  The series is at its best when it remembers to slow down and let us get to know the characters and their complex backstories.  The drama creates a universe that is immersive and strangely relatable.

You should expect plenty of blood and violence with this one.  I definitely would not recommend it if you are squeamish.  And while I enjoyed binging all 3 seasons, I enjoyed some seasons more than others.  I suspect the gap between season 1 and the other 2 seasons may have effected the continuity of the story and its casting choices.   I give ‘Sweet Home’ Seasons 1-3 a solid 8 out of 10.
