Plot Summary for 'Study Group'

If You Can't Join Them, Beat Them!

A struggling student dreams of starting a study group at his new technical high school, so he can improve his grades and get into college.  And when he finds out that his new homeroom teacher is his former beloved tutor, who agrees to be the club advisor, he thinks things are finally looking up.  But the group is quickly targeted by the school bully, putting all of them in danger.  And now their new leader will be forced to step forward and protect their group and its members if he is going to make his dreams come true.  And it’s a fight he has been training for his whole life.

Personal Reflection

My Personal Thoughts and Rating

‘Study Group’ is a short youth action drama with plenty of great fighting scenes and an exciting storyline.  But unlike other bullying dramas, this one isn’t focused on the emotional pain of the experience but on the ability to overcome it.  It’s bullying through a manhwa lens.  Themes of protecting those you care about and finding true friendships make a heartwarming balance to the violence of the action scenes.  There is also plenty of humor along the way!

Having said that, this is a bullying drama, and while the fighting is well choreographed it is still violent.  In an effort to tone down the violence and mirror the feeling of the webtoon it was based on,  the drama is purposely a bit campy and definitely requires a suspension of disbelief.  For some, the over-the-top feeling of the series was not their cup of tea.  But the story and characters are fun and I really enjoyed the watch.  I give “Study Group’ a 9 out of 10 ramen.

General Information

What You Need to Know About About 'Rooftop Prince'

This classic historical romantic comedy originally appeared on SBS TV. It was directed by Ahn Gil Ho, who went on to direct popular dramas such as ‘Stranger’ in 2017 and ‘The Glory’ in 2022 and Shin Yoon Sub who also directed ‘Catch the Ghost’ in 2019.

Air Date: March 21 – May 24, 2012

Episodes: 20

Where to Watch: Viki

Genre: Historical Rom-Com

Starring: Park Yoo Chun and Han Ji Min

Plot Summary

A Trip to the Present

While still reeling from the murder of his wife, a Joseon Crown Prince suddenly finds himself and three of his officials transported to a rooftop apartment in modern day Korea.  And as he begins to meet the present day doppelgangers from his past, including a very much alive, modern version of the Crown Princess, he is sure he has been brought to the future to solve the mystery of who killed his wife and why.

But that isn’t the only mystery he needs to solve.  It seems his own modern day doppelganger has mysteriously disappeared under suspicious circumstances.  Now he hopes to find out the truth of what happened to both victims and return everything to its proper place.   But things become complicated when the Prince finds himself developing feelings for another present day woman.  And they will both be surprised to discover that they also have a connection in the past.

Personal Reflection

My Personal Thoughts and Rating

‘Rooftop Prince’ is a time-travel rom-com with a touch of murder mystery.  To say this one is a historical drama seems a bit misleading since very little of the drama actually occurs in the Joseon period.  The secondary cast has a fun chemistry and although the drama is 20 episodes, it is a pretty light, easy watch.

I feel like it’s important to remember that this drama is from 2012, and it does show its age at times.  Don’t expect the smooth camera angles and complex plots of modern dramas.  It does get pretty melodramatic at times, with some fairly ridiculous story elements.  It also gave us with an open ending that left way more to my imagination than I would have liked.     I give “Rooftop Prince’ a 7 out of 10 ramen.

What You Need to Know About About 'Light Shop'

This supernatural mystery drama originally appeared on Disney + . It was the debut director project for Kim Hee Won, who is better known as a veteran actor.  He starred in popular dramas such as the 2016 romantic comedy ‘My Wife’s Having An Affair This Week’ and the 2023 superhero thriller ‘Moving’.

Air Date: December 4 – 18, 2024

Episodes: 8

Where to Watch: Hulu

Genre: Supernatural Mystery

Starring:  Ju Ji Hoon and Park Bo Young

Plot Summary

A Way Out of the Dark

As a group of strangers wander through the streets of a rundown neighborhood, each person seems to be living their day to day lives.  But one by one, they are drawn to the only visible source of light in the area, a dazzling light shop.  Inside the shop sits a mysterious owner who seems to understands what is happening.  And his shop appears to hold the key to each of their fates.  As the wanderers struggle to make sense of the dark world around them, they will be forced to make choices that will have dramatic consequences.

Personal Reflection

My Personal Thoughts and Rating

‘Light Shop’ is a supernatural horror thriller.  It is beautifully filmed and the large cast is amazing.  The stories are heartfelt and honest and each character has their own unique plot and backstory.  The drama is intricate and surprising, as seemingly unrelated stories are slowly weaved together to form an enchanting tapestry of love and precious memories.

But this is one of those dramas where you are expected to feel a bit lost in the beginning.  We are thrown into the dark with the characters, and the light is revealed gradually and painstakingly.  The plot is presented in fragmented pieces that very slowly fit together.  And in the beginning, those fragments will seem confusing and totally unrelated.  That seemed to frustrate some fans.  And while the horror elements are tame, there are a few jump scares and a bit of blood.   But I found the visual effects mesmerizing and the character development “moving”.  I give ‘Light Shop’ a 10 out of 10 ramen.

Plot Summary for 'Melo Movie'

When Movie Meets Reality

A life-long movie enthusiast has worked his way up from acting extra to jaded film critic.  When he is reunited with a young director he had a brief relationship with five years ago, he gets an opportunity to finally explain to her why he was forced to disappear before without a word.  But each of them carry their own scars of love, lonliness, and abandonment.  Now they will be left to decide if they can forgive the mistakes of their pasts and rekindle their relationship.

My Thoughts on 'Melo Movie'

My Personal Insights and Rating

‘Melo Movie’ is another emotionally intense, slow-burn romance drama. There are some giggles along the way.  The characters are realistically flawed and complex and the themes of childhood fears, trauma and struggling artists are relatable.  The dialogues are well written and natural and the cast does a wonderful job of delivering them with just the right touch of emotional weight.  Also, Kim Jae Wook fans will not want to miss his outstanding performance as the lead’s older brother!

But this drama is not the light-hearted rom-com that some may assume at first glance.  For some the pace will seem too slow and heavily based on dialogue rather than action.  While the love story is at the center of this plot, the drama is more about the story of these characters, through their pains and disappointments, finding healing.    I give ‘Melo Movie’ a 9 out of 10 ramen.

Unspoiled Series Overview

'Love Scout'

A driven CEO of a headhunting agency has guided her small company to success. But her workaholic personality has a price.  She is chaotically disorganized, suffers chronic insomnia, and is often difficult to get along with on a personal level.  Which is why every secretary she has ever hired has quit.  But when her office manager and only real friend hires an efficient, well-tempered single dad as her newest secretary, everyone hopes for the best.  And although the CEO bristles in the beginning, he is determined to win her over with his thoughtful skills of office and personal management skills.

'Love Scout' is a Sweet, Slow-Burn Romance About a CEO and Her Secretary

My Thoughts on 'Love Scout'

Learning the Finer Points of Work/Life Balance

‘Love Scout’ is a slow-burn office romance drama.  Ths drama does a nice job of flipping the gender stereotypes by showing the struggle between work and raising a child from the side of a single father, while the woman is the workaholic CEO.  The mature romance steers away from unnecessary relationship drama and shallow miscommunication to give us a realistic love story with just enough real life bumps to keep the plot going.  The drama has a warm, comforting quality that feels like a pleasant cup of tea.

Let me repeat, this is a slow-burn.  The pacing feels inconsistent, with some definite drag in parts.  The plot is a bit predictable and the villains are one-dimensional and not well developed.  For an office romance, the business scenes feel strangely watered down and irrelevant.  These things may frustrate certain audiences, but I really did enjoy this drama and it’s efforts to teach work/life balance and healing.  I give ‘Love Scout’ an 8 out of 10.

Plot Summary for 'Missing: The Other Side'

A Tale of Goodbyes

A man finds himself in a mysterious village that is home to people who have passed away but never been found.  While the village is invisible to most of the living, he and one other resident seem to be the only ones who can see the “ghosts” of the missing.  And since the two of them, unlike the unlucky towns’ people, are able to come and go from the village, they decide to help the people move on peacefully to the next life by gathering clues that can lead the police to the residents’ missing bodies.

My Thoughts on 'Missing: The Other Side'

My Personal Insights and Rating

‘Missing: The Other Side’ is a touching and emotional supernatural crime drama. The plot is unique and the individual stories are well-written.  Don’t let the description fool you.  This is not a spooky ghost story so much as a look at human loss and the ability to find closure.  The crime cases do involve some violence but the scenes are not gory or scary.

As a drama that deals with the dead, this is a story of saying goodbye, and that can be sad and bittersweet.  Also, the second season focuses primarily on children, which can be harder to watch.  But I appreciated the fact that it doesn’t milk those emotions unnecessarily. On a strangely technical note, this series is currently only available if you have both Viki and Netflix. But if you have access to both, I highly recommend this interested and well-developed drama. I give ‘Missing: The Other Side’ a 9 out of 10 ramen.

General Information

What You Need to Know About About 'Iron Family'

This family weekend drama originally appeared on KBS2 . It was directed by Sung Joon Hae, who also directed other popular dramas such as the 2022 drama ‘Bravo My Life’ and the 2020 drama ‘No Matter What’.

Air Date:  September 28, 2024 – January 26, 2025

Episodes: 36

Where to Watch: Viki

Genre: Family Rom-Com

Starring: Kim Jung Hyun and Geum Sae Rok

Plot Summary

For the Love of Money

A 3 generational family owns and runs a neighborhood dry cleaners.  Though their business is well established and respected, money has always been tight.  And when they find out that the youngest daughter requires an expensive medical procedure to keep her eyesight, they become desperate to find a way to pay for it.

So when the grandparents stumbled upon a bag of money buried on the mountainside, they can’t help being tempted to steal it.  Hiding the money under their bed, they resolve to only spend the money when necessary.  But as the local police dig deeper into the missing money, each family member will be forced to make difficult choices revolving around family and money.

Personal Reflection

My Personal Thoughts and Rating

‘Iron Family’ is a shortened form of the traditional weekend family drama.  At 36 episodes, the pace is better than many other family dramas while still following a whole family of characters.  The multi-generational cast is well-utilized to give a wide range of stories and characters.  The plot is silly and ridiculous, but the cast make it so fun.

For some, a 36 episode drama is still too much of a commitment.  This drama is obviously not for them.  It’s also not really realistic or serious, if that is what you are looking for.  All the talk about money sometimes overshadows the actually characters, which can be disappointing at times.  But I thought the cast and story were fun and as a fan of the weekend dramas, I loved the 36 episode format.  I give “Iron Family’ an 8 out of 10 ramen.

Plot Summary for 'The Trauma Code: Heroes on Call'

The Heart of a Trauma Surgeon

A trauma specialist who has trained internationally in war zones with elite medical teams takes a job running a struggling trauma department in a university hospital.  But those charged with running the hospital and its budget are not thrilled with the new surgeon’s techniques or expensive treatment options.  Now as he tries to create a top-tier trauma center with the help of his team of handpicked misfits, those in charge will look for ways to close the whole thing down and get rid of the arrogant new team leader.

My Thoughts on 'The Trauma Code: Heroes on Call'

My Personal Insights and Rating

‘The Trauma Code: Heroes on Call’ is an intense, fast-paced medical drama. This one has bits of humor and a healthy dose of bromance.  The story is well-written and balances interesting medical cases with an over-arching story that pits the new trauma team against established hospital politics.  I loved this cast and I appreciate that even though this drama was written with the intention of having mulitple seasons, it manages to both put a nice finish on this season while still leaving space for potential upcoming seasons.

On the down side, this isn’t just a medical series;  it’s a trauma medicine series.  Read here, extremely bloody.  While I personally am not overly squeamish, I have heard plenty of fans complain that they spent large amounts of time with their eyes covered.  So, just go in expecting lots of emergency and surgery scenes with plenty of bloody camera shots.  With their eyes on other seasons, I did feel like there were a few story threads that they left hanging to pick up later.  But I absolutely enjoyed this one!   I give ‘The Trauma Code: Heroes on Call’ a 9 out of 10 ramen.

Personal Insights

My Thoughts on 'When the Phone Rings'

‘When the Phone Rings’ is a romantic mystery thriller.  The leads play their roles perfectly and their chemistry is great.  The twists and turns are exciting and the story and characters are well developed and interesting.  I enjoyed watching the sign language and loved how it emphasized the importance of honest communication.  The balance between romance and mystery is good and the cinematography really helps enhance the moods and emotions.

But as is often the case with mystery thrillers, the plot can be pretty far-fetched.  Be prepared to suspend your disbelief if you are going to enjoy this one.  Also, no spoilers here, but this drama has one of the weirdest final episodes I have ever seen in a Korean drama.  I definitely enjoyed watching it, and would have probably rated it higher before watching the ending.  But if you want a suspenseful romance, I would absolutely recommend this one.  ‘When the Phone Rings’ an 8 out of 10 ramen.
