Personal Reflection

My Personal Thoughts and Rating

‘Family By Choice’ is a sweet romantic drama about love, friendship, and the bond of family.  Let me start by saying that I did not see the original Chinese version of this drama, which many fans seemed to prefer.  But I really loved this drama a lot.  It was funny, heart-warming, and well-told.  The chemistry with all of the cast was great, and while the romances were sweet, I loved it that all the other relationships were given equal screen time and weight.

This drama does take its time, focusing more on character development and emotional depth than action.  Some complained that it felt too slow.  This is not a breezy light rom-com.  The topics of parental neglect and deep emotional scars are central to the characters and their personal growth.  And you may find yourself crying right along with them.  But I loved these characters and the precious relationships they developed.   I give “Family By Choice’ a 9 out of 10 ramen.

Story Summary

But her questionable verdicts become the target of public outrage. And when she meets a handsome, young detective who has made it his mission to arrest these villains and get justice for the victims and their families, he threatens to uncover her true identity and see her punished for her role in the recent deaths of some of the criminals who have come through her court.

Personal Reflection and Rating

Hell Hath No Fury Like a Demon Judge

My Impressions

‘The Judge from Hell’ is a dark fantasy revenge thriller.  This drama is a wild ride that keeps the action coming unti the end.  The story itself is unique and interesting and Park Shin Hye does an amazing job as the devilishly charming demon.  The drama gives us a bit of romance, a bit of legal drama, and a whole lot of crime drama.  The vigilante angle of this drama gives us a demon anti-hero who, at times, gives us more humanity than those she seeks to punish.

While I enjoyed the thrilling tone of this drama, the violence can be gruesome and a bit gratitous.  There are times the plot is a bit all over the place and there are some obvious plot holes.  This is the kind of series that is meant to be enjoyed in the moment , but not analyzed too carefully.  But the parts that are good, are well-done, and it was a fun distraction that held my interest all the way through.  I give ‘The Judge From Hell’ an 8 out of 10.

Story Summary

Plot Overview

A young woman leaves behind a successful job and a prestigious fiance and returns home to Korea after years of living in the United States.  But she is surprised to find that in the time that she has been gone, very little has changed.  Including the constant presence of her neighbor and childhood friend, who is now a handsome and talented architect with an office right in their old neighborhood.

And as she struggles to get a fresh start, despite the pressure from her family to go back to the U.S., she will find herself turning to her old friend for support and encouragement.  But his feelings for her have always gone deeper than the platonic friendship they share, and he soon realizes this may be his first and last chance to finally win her heart.

Personal Insights

My Thoughts on 'Love Next Door'

‘Love Next Door’ is a Netflix slice of life drama about two childhood friends who are reunited after 10 years of being apart.  The leads have great chemistry and verbal rapport and the secondary characters are well-developed.  The family dynamics give the drama heart without limiting the focus to entirely romantic, and the secondary couple is adorable.

But this drama is not the light-hearted rom-com that it might look like at first glance.  This one is a slow-burn romance, for those that enjoy an emotional rollercoaster.  The angst can be a bit heavy-handed and the characters feel kind of irrational and immature at times.  But these leads are two of my favorites and I enjoyed the touching journey.  I give ‘Love Next Door’ a 8 out of 10 ramen.

Plot Summary for gyeongseong creature

A Tale of Love and Second Chances

In the spring of 1945, in Japanese occupied Korea, a young man has carved out a successful life running the “House of Golden Treasure” pawn shop.  One day he is visited by a mysterious young woman.  She has spent her life traveling throughout Asia with her father searching for missing persons.  But beyond her job, she is also searching for the mother who went missing 10 years ago.  She is hoping he can use his connections to help her with her current case.  And as he is pulled deeper into her search, the pair of them will make a shocking discovery about medical experiments being performed in a secluded hospital and a monstrous parasite that may threaten them all.

My Thoughts on 'gyeongseong creature'

My Personal Insights and Rating

‘Gyeongseong Creature’ is a fated love story against the backdrop of an intense action thriller.  The cast is star studded and the cinematography is striking and beautiful.  While season 1 takes place in 1945, the writers bring us into the current times for season 2.  This split in time keeps both seasons relatively short and to the point.

On the other hand, the drama is violent and bloody, and the monsters are scary enough to startle the faint of heart.  I definitely felt like the storyline was stronger in the first season, but season 2 gives us a nice closure to the overall plot.   I give ‘Gyeongseong Creature’ an 8 out of 10 ramen.

Plot Summary

A Tale of Contract Marriage

But things veer from her plan when her “husband” suddenly shows up as an intern at her office.  And as they are  forced to continue their marriage charade, they find themselves becoming much closer.  But a secret from his past threatens to split them apart.

Personal Reflection

My Personal Thoughts and Rating

‘No Gain, No Love’ is a light-hearted rom-com with plenty of fun humor.  At 12 episodes, the story never has time to get dull and there is enough emotional depth to keep it on track.   I find Shin Min Ah enchanting in everything she does, and this drama did not disappoint.  And I have to give a special shout-out to any second-lead couple who is so popular with fans, they decide to give them their own 2 episode “mini-drama”.

I feel like I’m saying this a lot these days, but this drama does have a 12 year age gap between its leads.  I also felt like a couple of the side stories fizzled out disappointingly and the ending seemed a bit rushed.    But it is a nice, breezy watch with some nice, touching moments. I give “No Gain, No Love’ an 8 out of 10 ramen.

The Story

As a child, Moon Cha Young stumbled into a restaurant in a small seaside town.  She met the owner’s son, Lee Kang, who gave her a free meal and promised to make her his favorite dessert tomorrow.  He was her first love and her happiest memory.  And his kindness inspired her to pursue a career in cooking when she grew up.  Years later, she runs into a doctor with the same name.

He doesn’t remember her, but she knows immediately that it is him.  Embarrassed, she flees.  But when she begins cooking at a local hospice he shows up again, as the new doctor assigned to work there.  Work ing together  to heal the hearts of the hospice patients and their families, they also begin to find healing for their own scars.

Should I Watch

This is a really beautiful drama, both visually and emotionally.  But be warned that this is not for anyone looking for fast paced, exciting shows.  It is also heartbreaking at times, as we get to know and say goodbye to various hospice patients.  Chocolate is a story driven by the characters and their emotions.  If you enjoy a good drama that celebrates the bittersweet flavors of love and life, this one is definitely worth your time.  I give it 8/10 ramen.

Story Summary

The Business of Divorce

A rookie lawyer is disappointed when she shows up at her first job to find out she has been placed on the Divorce Team, rather than the Corporate Law Division, as she had requested.  And she is even more disappointed to learn that her new boss is a 17 year veteran with a reputation for chasing away every new employee that shows up.

But as she begins to get involved with her clients, she finds that divorce cases are not the depressing open and shut events she had feared.  And when her new boss finds herself at the center of a high-profile divorce and custody battle, her boss turns to her to fight at her side.

Personal Reflection and Rating

A Story About the Lessons of Divorce

My Impressions

‘Good Partner’ is a realistic episodic law drama, written by a practicing lawyer,  that looks at divorce from different perspectives.  But the stories are so much more than your average greedy, contentious divorce cases.  Each case is complex and unique, and the outcomes are surprisingly unpredictable.  The plot is driven by complex, nuanced characters and the strong female leads have great chemistry.

Divorce in itself can be a difficult topic, and this drama does cover some other sensitive themes like abuse and marital infidelity.  Things do drag a bit toward the end and may have been better as a 12 episode drama.  But all in all, I thoroughly enjoyed this one.   I give ‘Good Partner’ a 9 out of 10.

But a run in with a handsome military officer threatens to expose her true identity.  Although she tries to avoid any further contract with the astute young man, fate continues to bring them together.  And she soon finds that he just may have a secret of his own that connects their pasts in surprising ways.

Personal Insights

My Thoughts on 'Knight Flower'

‘Knight Flower’ is a historical rom-com with an upbeat vibe.  There is a bit of family drama and political intrigue, but it’s not as heavy as other historical dramas.  At 12 episodes, its a pretty light, easy watch and Lee Han Nee 1s entertaining as always.  The fight scenes are fun and the romance is sweet.  It’s really just what you want in a simple period romance.

This is another drama with a significant age gap;  Lee Han Nee is 11 years older than her co-star.  Although its not really addressed in the plot itself, some fans were put off by it.  If you aren’t a rom-com fan, the lack of significant substance and silly humor might be a bit light-weight for you.  But I thought it was fun and charming.  I give ‘Knight Flower’ a 8 out of 10 ramen.

General Information

All You Need to Know About 'Black Out'

This gripping crime drama originally appeared on MBC.  Although both Byun Young Joo and Lee Kyoo Man have directed a handful of movies, this is their first shot at directing a drama series.  And if you liked this one, look for Byun Young Joo to direct the psychological thriller ‘The Mantis’, scheduled to come out some time next year.

Air Date: August 16 – October 4, 2024

Episodes: 16

Where to Watch: Hulu

Genre: Psychological Crime Thriller

Starring: Byun Yo Han and Go Jun

Story Summary

Plot Overview

10 years ago, a star student from a small town woke up from a drinking binge to find two of his classmates murdered.  And although he doesn’t remember anything about what happened the night before, the evidence says that he killed them.

Now, after serving 10 years in prison as a minor, he has returned to town.  And no one is happy to see him back;  even those who were once his closest friends.  But as information about that night begin to come to life, the details start to seem more and more suspicious.  And with the help of a detective who has only just arrived in town himself, he intends to reveal the truth about the killings, both to prove his own innocence and to get justice for his friends.

Personal Insights

My Thoughts on 'Black Out'

‘Black Out’ is a masterfully told psychological thriller that deals with themes of redemption and betrayal.  It is dark  and chilling, as it slowly unravels an intriguing story full of complex characters and shocking plot twists.  The cast is outstanding and the cinematography is visually engaging, as the story pulls you into its web of stunning revelations.

This drama is unaplogetically intense, without any attempts at levity through things like romance or comedy.   It is a psychological thriller, not an action drama.  So expect the plot to be revealed very gradually, especially at the beginning.  This drama is not overly bloody or gory but the psychololgical trauma can be difficult to watch at times.  If you like this genre, this is definitely not one to miss!  I would put it up there with dramas like ‘Beyond Evil’ and ‘Flower of Evil’.  I loved it!  I  give ‘Black Out’ a 10 out of 10 ramen.
