The Story

Navillera - Full Review

Shim Deok Chool has always dreamed of becoming a ballet dancer.  Now at the age of 70, as a retired postal worker who has raised his children, he is finally ready to pursue that goal, even if his family is against it.  When Deok Chool shows up at a private ballet studio and begs the owner to teach him, the owner volunteers one of his students, Lee Chae Rok, to become his instructor.  In exchange, he asks Deok Chool to be Chae Rok’s manager as he prepares for an important audition.  This unlikely pairing will bring it’s share of joys and struggles, and each will learn some very important life lessons along the way;  including some that have nothing to do with ballet.

Song Kang as Lee Chae Rok

Song Kang got a late start as a ballet dancer.  Growing up, he was forced to play soccer on a team that his abusive father coached.  But when his father is arrested for beating his other players and his mother dies, he is left alone and aimless.  In the void, he turns to ballet at the age of 19.  Now, 4 years later, he is training to audition for a professional company.  The last thing in the world he has time for is teaching a 70 year old how to dance.  But as he spends time with Deok Chul, his own wounds begin to heal and he learns the power of forgiveness and second chances.

Navillera - Full Review

Lee Chae Rok is a young man with a painful past that has made him cautious and reserved.  But his aloof  attitude is no match for Deok Chul’s incessant cheerfulness.  In their friendship, he finds the strength to forgive his father and fight through his injuries for the chance to become a ballerino.  Song Kang is a rising star, and this role is just another star in his ever-growing list of accomplishments.  His ability to learn some of the easier dance moves and carry himself like a dancer, even when he wasn’t dancing, are wonderful.  And his portrayal of a growing affection for not only Deok Chul, but his entire family, was genuine and warm.  Although this is my first Song Kang drama, I am sure it will not be my last.

Park In Hwan as Shim Deok Chul

Shim Deok Chul is a 70 year old retired postal carrier who has lived his whole life working to support his family.  As a young boy he peeked through the windows of a local ballet studio and began to dream of being a dancer, but his father refused to allow it.  After a recent Alzheimer’s diagnosis plus the urging of a dying friend, Deok Chul realizes that his time is running short.  Fueled with a fresh determination, he decides to take dance lessons.  Finding an unlikely teacher in a young dancer at a nearby studio, he begins lessons.  At first, it is physically challenging, but he perseveres and begins to see progress.  He also gains a new friend in Chae Rok.  Even when his wife and children try to persuade him to give up, Deok Chul continues to follow his dream in the hopes of getting to appear on stage at least once and having the chance to “soar”.

Navillera - Full Review

Shim Deok Chul is wise and caring.  His quiet determination in the face of a life-changing medical diagnosis is inspiring.  As a character, he proves that it’s never too late to chase your dreams and do the things you love, despite what anyone else may try to tell you.   It’s hard not to root for someone who has given his whole heart to a goal that seems impossible.  Park In Hwa does an amazing job in this role.  The way his body language changes over the course of his training and the wealth of emotions he conveys with his facial expressions are the work of a seasoned actor. I loved everything about this performance and I love the fact that this drama gave the chance for an older actor to take center stage.

Na Moon Hee as Choi Hae Nam

Choi Hae Nam is Deok Chul’s wife.  At first, she is angry at him for starting ballet, but she is eventually won over by his passion.  In the end, she becomes one of his staunchest supporters and loudest cheerleaders.  She defends Deok Chul’s choices to their children when they try to make him give up.

Hong Seung Hee as Shim Eun Ho

Shim Eun Ho is Deok Chul’s only grandchild.  Her father is Deok Chul’s oldest son, and he has spent his whole life striving for financial success.  Now he is demanding the same from Eun Ho.  But when Eun Ho’s intern job fails to turn into the full-time position her father expected, she begins to explore her own dreams and goals, like her grandfather.

Kim Kwon as Yang Ho Beom

Yang Ho Beom was one of Chae Rok’s high school teammates, who Chae Rok’s father beat.  Because of Chae Rok’s father’s arrest, the team was disbanded and Ho Beom lost the opportunity to be scouted as a professional soccer player.  Since then, he has lived as a thug, hanging out at the local billard hall and fighting with anyone who gets in his way.  After meeting up with Chae Rok again by coincidence, he begins taking revenge on  Chae Rok because of his father’s actions.

Things I Liked

♥ May-December Friendship

Typically, when a drama stars an older actor, the best friend/side kick is a character about the same age.  So, I loved the idea of Deok Chul and Chae Rok developing a geniune friendship with each other.  Like true friends, it wasn’t always smooth sailing and Chae Rok had a habit of venting his frustrations on his poor student. But as their friendship grew, their respect and love for each other were very sweet.

♥ Chae Rok’s Dad

So often we get the kdrama story where the innocent person is put in jail and the child tries to clear their name.  I appreciated the honesty of this drama showing a father who was clearly guilty for what he had been accused and a son trying to make peace with that.  There is no sugarcoating to this story and that matched the bittersweet tone of the rest of the stories so well.

♥Beautiful Dance Scenes

The dance sequences for this drama were beautifully performed and visually stunning.  I loved the chance to watch real dancers as they jumped, glided, and spun across the floor with real grace and skill.  These scenes gave “Navillera” something special that was a pleasure to watch.

Things I Didn’t Like

Only 12 Episodes

I hate to be that person who complains just because it ended, but this is one I would have gladly watched for the standard 16 episodes.  It’s not really a critcism, but it’s still my biggest complaint!   But I guess leaving the fans wanting more is never a bad strategy.  At any rate, I feel like they could have extended it out to the full 16 episodes and gone more in depth with some of the storylines that were already introduced.

Alzheimers

If kdramas are to be believed these days, every older person in South Korea has Alzheimers.  Don’t get me wrong.  This is an important topic that should be discussed, but it is feeling a bit overused currently.  This story had plenty of root for the underdog power without Alzheimers coming into the equation.  It’s not that I thought it was bad.  I’m just not sure it was needed.

Teaser Romance

This is another drama where they set the stage for a romance that never quite takes off.  It’s not the all dramas need romance, and honestly there were plenty of other stories to keep this one going without it.   But the undeniable connection between Chae Rok and Eun Ho is shown right from the beginning, so it would have been nice to see at least a hint that their romance is going somewhere.

Navillera - Full Review

The Ending

The last episode of “Navillera” ties up lots of loose ends.  Even though Deok Chul wakes up on the morning of his big performance without any memory of his choreography, Chae Rok gently encourages him to take his opportunity and helps jar his memory.  The pair put on an emotional performance of Swan Lake for a weepy audience.  Seung Joo gathers the family to show everyone the documentary that he has put together about Deok Chul’s journey and everyone is touched seeing his hard work.  Once the performance is done, Chae Rok is ready to start his training abroad.  At home, Eun Ho is making her way at the radio station, her dad is working for a local baseball team, and her mom is the head consultant.  Seong Gwan has returned to medicine and Seung Joo and So Ri are back together as a couple, and running a ballet school.  And Ho Beom and Se Jong are playing on the same soccer team. Deok Chul’s Alzheimer’s is progressing, which is heartbreaking, but they give us a cute scene where he sneaks out to “deliver the mail”.  And then, after 3 years, we see the last beautiful reunion between Deok Chul and Chae Rok.  Not only does Deok Chul remember his teacher, but he stands in the snow and dances, still remembering their choreography and the movements.  What a wonderful way to end a sweet journey.

Should I Watch

Navillera - Unspoiled Review

“Navillera’ is another Netflix gem.  This drama is heartfelt and sincere, and the message is that it’s never to late to follow your dreams, at any age or any stage of your career.  Both the story and characters are engaging and inspiring.  There is very little romance or comic relief, so if you’re looking for a rom-com, this is probably not the one to watch.  But honestly, this is  the kind of drama that appeals to fans across all ages and all genres, so if you haven’t seen it yet, I definitely recommend you give it a try.  I doubt you will be disappointed!  I give “Navillera” a 9 out of 10 ramen.

Royal Secret Agent - Full Review

Following rumors about those who are using their positions to take advantage of the people, the secret royal agent travels to those towns in disguise and attempts to uncover their crimes.  His team consists of himself, his servant, and a female police officer who travels dressed as a man.  Together they will fight to bring justice for those who have been mistreated.

The Leads

Secret Royal Agent - Full Review
Royal Secret Agent - Full Review

Kim Myung Soo as Sung Yi Gyum

Sung Yi Gyum is coasting through life as a royal administrator until he gets caught gambling.  Once the top-rated recruit from his testing cycle, Yi Gyum lost all interest in making a real difference in people’s lives afer he was betrayed by his fiancee and his brother.  Royal Secretary Jang remembers his potential, and “punishes” his gambling by sending him out as the royal secret agent.  Yi Gyum travels to several towns and stays in disguise until he has the proof to capture the corrupt officials.  Along the way, his passion for justice and a more fair society are rekindled.  His passion for his female traveling companion is also kindled.

Secret Royal Agent - Full Review

Like many who have suffered a traumatic betrayal, Yi Gyum is purposely detached and unconcerned about much of anything.  He has given up on his political ideals and is living just to have fun.  But as he begins to get a taste for how good it feels to make a difference in people’s lives, he finds himself wanting to do more and work for real justice.  Kim Myung Soo is a charming actor, but there isn’t enough depth to this role for him to express much character development.  His relationship with his brother and ex-fiancee felt akward all the way up until their final goodbye, and they never seemed to reach any kind of closure. Since that love triangle is the root of his disillusionment, the lack-luster way this story finished left his character rather bland.

Kwon Nara as Hong Da In

Hong Da In is the daughter of Prince Hwiyeong, who killed himself after being accused as a traitor.  Now working as a police officer, she is trying to find evidence to prove that her father was innocent.  Sent as part of the royal investigation team by her adopted father, Da In is supposed to be keeping an eye on Yi Gyum to make sure everything goes smoothly.  For the purpose of disguise, Da In always travels dressed as a man, although undercover missions often require her to use her “feminine charms”.  When she first meets Yi Gyum they don’t start off on the best footing but as she gets to know him, she finds him to be kind and just.

Secret Royal Agent - Full Review

Da In is bold and determined, especially for a woman at that time.  Proving her father’s innocence has been her life’s focus, so she doesn’t have many relationships outside of her love for the Royal Secretary, who raised her after her father’s death.  Good with disguise and quick on her feet, her contributions to the investigation team help them out of several tight spots.  Kwon Nara was a good choice for this role, although she also seemed to struggle with the stilted dialogue and sometimes akward scene timing.  Her chemistry with Kim Myung Soo never seemed to hit the smooth groove you would hope for in this kind of romantic comedy.

Supporting Characters

Lee Yi Kyung as Park Chun Sam

Park Chun Sam is Yi Gyum’s servant and best friend.  Wherever Yi Gyum goes, Chun Sam follows along, although he isn’t crazy about carrying out the dangerous missions they receive as secret royal agents.  He provides the comic relief in the drama as he bumbles along hiding from any confrontation he can avoid and falling in love with a woman in every town.

Lee Tae Hwan as Sung Yi Beom

Sung Yi Beom is Yi Gyum’s estranged brother.  A misunderstanding over Yi Gyum’s former fiancee left the brothers out of touch and Yi Beom to live life on the run.  Determined to use the circumstance for good, Yi Beom became a Korean Robin Hood, stealing money from the corrupt and giving it back to those it belonged to.  After years of being together, he is in love with Soon Ae, but he refuses to act on it out of respect for his brother.

Secret Royal Agent - Full Review
Secret Royal Agent - Full Review

Jo Soo Min as Kang Soon Ae

Kang Soon Ae grew up as the daughter of a courtesan.  When she refuses the unwanted advances of the local magistrate, he throws her in prison.  Yi Beom breaks her out and runs away with her.  Travelling for years as the only female in a group of bandits, she has become a mother figure who cooks and tends to their wounds.  She has tried to encourage a romantic relationship with Yi Beom, but he continues to resist her efforts.

Things I Liked

♥ Several Mini-Cases

Having Yi Gyum investigating several different cases that took place in various towns with new characters made this drama more interesting than if they had focused on one big case for the whole time.  This change of scene kept the plot moving and gave us lots of characters.  For this kind of drama, the structure gives it a less intense feel and creates a consistant fast-moving pace.

♥ Embracing Adventure

Especially for Da In, it would have been so easy to be swayed by the life of royalty and luxury, but she wasn’t in the least bit tempted.  Rather than wasting time on a “will she stay or go” storyline, they allowed her to stay true to her adventurous spirit.  To a lesser degree, the same could be said for both Yi Gyum and Chun Sam.  I love it that in the end they were all there because they had chosen the life of adventure.

♥ Not Focused on Palace

It’s hard to have a drama that takes place in the Joseon period without focusing on the palace and royals.  This drama does a nice job of shifting the focus out to the people.  Yes, there is still political intrigue going on at the palace, but it doesn’t dominate the story in the same way as most period dramas.

Secret Royal Agent - Full Review

Things I Didn’t Like

Yi Beom

Yi Beom’s character and storyline didn’t really work for me.  First of all, the whole Robin Hood idea seemed cliche and underdeveloped.  Since he was already in hiding, he decided to commit crimes so they would plaster his picture everywhere?  Does that make sense?  And second, what did Yi Gyum do to his brother to make him act so cold?  Yi Gyum misundersood the situation, but under the circumstances he has a right to be mad.  But what did he do to Yi Beom?  And third, there wasn’t enough chemistry or interaction between Yi Beom and Soon Ae to really care whether they fall in love or not.  His plot line just seemed randomly thrown in with no rhyme or reason.

Spur of the Moment Rebellion?

Okay, so I understand that Yi Beom was broken-hearted over the death of his mentor. But throwing together a last minute revolution and hoping back-up comes  doesn’t seem like an air-tight plan.  In the end, they failed and lost valuable men in the process.  It seemed like a really spontaneous decision with far-reaching consequences.  And the only reason Yi Beom even lived to face his defeat was because Yi Gyum found a way to bail him out.  It felt like wasted space in the final episodes that could have been better used to address already-existing plots.

Da In’s “Disguise”

Women dressed as men is a pretty common trope for historical dramas, but Da In never really seemed very “secret”.  Kwon Nara is a beauty and rosy lips and accentuated eyes didn’t help make her look more masculine.  Neither did her traveling companions running after her calling her “miss” constantly.  Aside from getting thrown into a couple sleeping rooms together, there really wasn’t much point in her pretending to be a man anyway.

Secret Royal Agent - Full Review

The Ending

“Secret Royal Agent” has a pretty straight-forward ending. All of the cases were solved, the corrupt officials were punished, and the town’s people were compensated.  After a failed revolution, Yi Beom is captured and he and Yi Gyum fake his death.  Later the gang takes him to meet Soon Ae on the outskirts of town and the couple head into hiding together again.  Da In finds out that her father really was innocent and brings the proof home with her.  Yi Gyum frees Chun Sam so that he is no longer a slave.  And then, even though Yi Gyum swore this would be his final mission, he gets persuaded to take another case when he hears that people are enpersonating him and tarnishing his reputation.  Initially, Da In and Chun Sam tell Yi Gyum that they are done, but when Yi Gyum reaches the gate to head out of the city, they are both there waiting for them.  The trio walk off together creating a perfect open door for a Season 2 and yet still offering a kind of happily ever after.

Secret Royal Agent - Full Review

Should I Watch

Secret Royal Agent - Unspoiled Review

I really wanted to like “Secret Royal Agent”.  It has a fantastic cast and I love historical dramas.  But this one left me disappointed.  With a cliché plot that fell apart as the drama went on, dialogue that didn’t give the cast much to work with, and comic moments that felt random and out of place, this drama just fell flat, particularly when compared to other historical comedies such as “Mr. Queen”.  Having said all that, this drama was not without it’s moments. Kim Myung Soo’s charm does peek out from time to time and the travelling trio have moments where their chemistry shines through. For those who like historical dramas but don’t like their heavy plot lines or beginners looking for a historical drama that isn’t too complicated, you may appreciate this one.  If you are just looking for an easy distraction, this drama can be fun. But there are definitely a lot of other dramas I would watch first.   I give “Secret Royal Agent” a 6 out of 10 ramen.

Lee Sun Kyun as Choi Hyun Wook/Chef

Choi Hyun Wook is an Italian trained chef who gets a new job as head chef for La Sfera Restaurant.  Even after bringing a team of chefs he has trained himself, there is plenty of chaos in their kitchen.  A war breaks out between the team Hyun Wook recruited and the one that was already working there.  On top of that, a new female chef refuses to leave, even when he tries to fire her.  And despite telling her that she is ugly on a regular basis, he finds himself developing feelings for her. But after making such a big deal about no dating in his kitchen, they have to keep their feelings hidden.   A cooking competition becomes the perfect platform for building teamwork and sharpening everyone’s skills.

Dear My Friends - Full Review

Chef Hyun Wook is outspoken, opinionated, and rude to everyone.  Demanding perfection from everything that comes out of his kitchen, he is fiercely passionate about his job and the training of those who work under him.  A painful past with a fellow chef has made him refuse to work with women in his kitchen;  at least until he meets Yoo Kyung.  Lee Sun Kyun is a great actor and I love everything I see him in.  Having him as the star was a major draw for me watching “Pasta”.  His ability to be so arrogant and yet overwhelmingly charming was perfect for the character of Chef.

Gong Hyo Jin as Seo Yoo Kyung

Seo Yoo Kyung has worked as a kitchen assistant at La Sfera for 3 years and has finally been promoted to chef.  But a new head chef shows up suddenly and tries to fire all the women, including her.  But the new chef is no match for her stubborn desire to finally get a chance to cook pasta.  Over time, she falls in love with Hyun Wook and they agree to date in secret.  When La Sfera puts together a team to compete in a cooking contest, Yoo Kyung is made their substitute.  When Ho Nam suffers an injury during the competition, Yoo Kyung steps in and saves the day.

Pasta - Full Review

Seo Yoo Kyung is quiet and eager to please.  For 3 years, she has worked tirelessly and never complained.  Her skills as a peacekeeper are exactly what Hyun Wook needs to hold everything together.  Yoo Kyung is able to see a softer side to Hyun Wook and she understands that his critical attitude is because of his desire to see them all succeed.  No one plays the meek female protragonist with a nerve of steel quite like Gong Hyo Jin.  This role is perfect for her and even though I sometimes wanted to scream at Yoo Kyung for not sticking up for herself more, Gong Hyo Jin was able to show her strength in other ways.

Things I Liked

♥ Lead Chemistry

Hyun Wook and Yoo Kyung have an irresistable chemistry that I really enjoyed.  From the moment they first meet in the crosswalk, there is a romantic tension that feels real.  True chemistry is best, not just in the romantic moments and kiss scenes, but in every exchange, and I felt like these two had that.  Whether he was giving her a cooking lesson or yelling at her for making a mistake, they had a connection that was apparent in their timing and body language.

♥ Jung Eun Soo

With such a big cast to talk about, there is one character that I still want to recognize.  Jung Eun Soo is Yoo Kyung’s replacement as Kitchen Assistant.  As someone who helps everyone in the kitchen, Eun Soo didn’t have to take sides in the staff rivalry and everyone seemed to like him.  But I especially loved his friendship with Chef and Yoo Kyung.  The scene where they sleep at Eun Soo’s apartment with Hyun Wook between them was so cute!

♥ Food as Eye Candy

Food and cooking scenes make up a large portion of this drama, and I really enjoyed seeing all the amazing dishes they made.  The colors and beauty of the food arranged on the plates were fun to look at it and admire.  Also, getting to see some of the techniques they used, like binding up the meat, was interesting.  I just wish I could go to La Sfera and try some of them!

Things I Didn’t Like

Treatment of Women

Poor treatment of women is a big part of the plot of this drama and I understand that it was done to make the story interesting and the Hyun Wook does come around quite a bit by the end, but sometimes it got to be a bit much episode after episode. Playing to those kinds of stereotypes is a trope I don’t really love and it seems like all of the ladies in “Pasta” deserved better treatment than they got.

Dating Wasn’t the Issue

I spent a huge amount of time screaming at my screen about this issue before someone finally brings it up.  Everyone kept saying that Chef Choi fired Mi Hee because she was dating a co-worker.  But making out in the refigeration room is much more severe than just dating.  Yes, Chef Choi went too far in saying their should be absolutely no dating, but that wasn’t the reason she was fired.  It took everyone forever to realize this distinction and it drove me crazy!

Philip and Byun Jung Soo

Byun Jung Soo’s crush on Philip was kind of cute and they played with it a little bit.  It seemed like they were going to put them together eventually, but then they just kind of dropped the storyline.  Because both characters were so eccentric, I think it could have been an interesting pairing, so I was disappointed they didn’t pursue it more.

The Ending

Dramas like “Pasta” are great because it’s pretty much happy endings all around.  There are no villains awaiting punishment and no characters left to deal with their bad choices.  San and Chef have come to an agreement that they will run the restaurant together, making all the decisions as a team.  The home La Sfera team who won the competition are on their way to study in Italy, including Ho Nam, who is back in his rightful position.  The Italy team are here to stay and went out for a drink with Sae Young to apologize for being so hard on her.  San and Sae Young have decided to continue as friends, even as San encourages her to settle down and have some kids.  With half of their kitchen team heading to Italy, Chef visits the female chefs he had fired and invites them to come back and be a part of La Sfera again.  Our love birds also got their happy ending.  After watching several food related dramas in the past, I was prepared for Yoo Kyung to take the opportunity in Italy and leave Chef waiting for her.  I even thought that he might take the job offer to go with her.  But in the end, Yoo Kyung decides to stay and asks Hyun Wook to get an apartment with her.  With this couple, nothing happens without a bit of contention.  Now that she is staying, Yoo Kyung wants to know which stove will be hers.  In other words, will she get to go back to the pasta line that she loves.  Hyun Wook refuses to get her a straight answer, but honestly it seems like he is just trying to get a rise out of her.  In a huff, Yoo Kyung storms out of the kitchen with Hyun Wook following.  And then it ends, right where it started, in the middle of their crosswalk, in a replay of their initially meeting; minus the goldfish and ending in a playful kiss!

Pasta - Unspoiled Review

“Pasta” is a pretty straight-forward rom-com.  The love story is cute and the leads have great chemistry.  And there is plenty of delicious food to drool over if you are a dedicated foodie. But “Pasta” doesn’t offer anything too complicated or unique with it’s plot line.  If you are looking for a simple, light-hearted love story, this is an entertaining choice.  I give “Pasta” a 7 out of 10 ramen.

Dear My Friends - Full Review

Welcome to my Dear My Friends – Unspoiled Review.  A young writer and translator has spent her life looking after her mother and her mother’s tight-knit group of friends.  Now, as the group approaches their twilight years, she considers turning their lives into a novel.  Proving that age is just a number, these friends are determined to live life to it’s fullest, finding love and fulfillment through their relationships.

Dear My Friends - Full Review

Go Hyun Jung as Park Wan

Park Wan is a single 40 year old translator and writer.  Growing up as the only daughter of a single mom, she has had her hands full taking care of her mother and her mother’s friends.  Contemplating her mom’s dream of turning her mom’s life and the lives of her friends into a book, she begins researching each of their personal stories.  The more she learns about each of their struggles, the more she realizes that even though she has know them as her “aunties” her whole life, she has never really known them.  Wan has a man who she loves, but due to an accident that caused him to lose the use of his legs, she cannot marry him because her mother doesn’t approve.

Dear My Friends - Full Review

Go Hyun Jung gives a wonderful performance as the grunging daughter who can’t help but love this crazy group of women.  Just like the woman who raised her, Wan is stubborn and strong, but she also has a nurturing heart.  No matter how much she wants something for herself, Wan can’t go against her mother’s wishes, which has been very difficult for her.  As she delves into the histories of the women who have been her mother’s life-long friends, she is overwhelmed by all they have endured in the past, but she is also surprised by the current realities they continue to face as they age.  She begins to understand that life and love do not last forever and should be savored while you can.

Go Doo Shim as Jang Nan Hee

Jang Nan Hee is Wan’s mother.  She operates her own restaurant and has worked hard her whole life.  As she and her friends grow older, they begin encountering new challenges.  Their minds and bodies have grown weaker and their children have grown up and found their own lives.  During these struggles, they realize that their friends are their greatest assets.  Nan Hee meets a younger man who frequents her restaurant and she wonders if it’s too late for her to find love.  But then a sudden cancer diagnosis causes her to put the rest of her life on hold as she fights the biggest battle of her life.

Dear My Friends - Full Review

Nan Hee has lived her life as a devoted daughter, sister, mother, and friend.  Selflessly, she pours herself out into the lives of those around her.  But sometimes those efforts drive her to be short-tempered and stubborn.  Usually those fits of ill-temper are aimed at her daughter, who gives at good as she gets!  During the course of the drama, we watch Nan Hee learn that we can’t control everything or everyone, and that sometimes we just need to let go and let other’s live their own lives; whether that is her daughter’s love life, her disabled brother’s marriage, or her friend’s dementia.  Go Doo Shim is an amazing actress and she brings such grace and beauty to this role.  I have enjoyed in several roles over the years, but this one gave her a chance to really shine and be the star she deserves to be.

Na Moon Hee as Moon Jung Ah

Things I Liked

♥ Seo Yeon Ha

Wow!  Where do I even begin.  I loved everything about Yeon Ha from the acting, to the character, to the beautiful love story.  Some of my favorite moments were of Yeon Ha and Wan just gazing at each other through their computer screens.  It feels so quietly intimate and the way that they can talk about difficult topics in such a transparent way is engaging.  The depth of Yeon Ha’s love for Wan in spite of his own struggles in life shows commitment and understanding.  I could have watched a whole drama with these two characters as the leads but they made every scene together count.

♥ Cast

This cast of veteran actors is so unique and talented.  There seriously is not a single, weak link in the whole group.  And it was such a pleasure to see each of them as leads getting the credit and screen-time they deserve.  Even though the focus of this drama is on the women, I would like to add that the men also did an outstanding job. I am so impressed with the heart and soul that this cast put into these memorable characters!

♥ Min Ho and Hee Ja

The mother/son relationship between Min Ho and Hee Ja was just so precious.  You could really feel the love between these characters.  While Hee Ja’s other sons were off flaunting their wealth and independence, Min Ho stays by his mom’s side while working hard to support his pregnant wife.  It’s in the quiet moments when he lets her sleep on his shoulder at the movie theater or lies down next to her on the floor that the raw emotion is almost overwhelming. Every scene they had together brought joy to my heart.

Things I Didn’t Like

Need More Mark Smith

It was so sad to see the photographer, Mark Smith, quietly bow out so early.  Even though his interactions with the group were limited, I enjoyed watching them together and initially thought some deeper friendships might for with time.  It seems a shame to waste such an interesting character when there was still plenty of potential for storyline.  Not that this drama was lacking for interesting characters, but I wouldn’t have minded Mark sticking around awhile.

Hee Ja in a Nursing Home

As I mentioned above, I loved the relationship between Min Ho and his mom, so it made me sad that she decided to live in a nursing home instead of staying with him and his family.  I wish that Min Ho could have convinced Hee Ja that he never saw her as a burden.  And it was heartbreaking to hear Hee Ja say she didn’t want to die in some tiny room, even if she is getting out with her friends on occassion.

Han Dong Jin

Shin Sung Woo did a fine job of acting the role of Han Dong Jin, but I didn’t really like the character.  There wasn’t enough character development for me to feel any real sympathy for him and didn’t feel like his relationship with Wan did anything to further her storyline.  We did get to see Nan Hee beat him up, which was fun, but really the drama would have been fine without him and his cheating.

Dear My Friends - Full Review

The Ending

There are a lot of storylines to tie up for the end of “Dear My Friends” and they did a pretty thorough job of it. Here is a quick run-through of where everyone is.  Maybe because she is the youngest, Choong Nam’s life is mostly the same.  She is continuing to study and run her coffee shop.  Young Won finds out that Dae Chul has been divorced for years and though he is sick, he is receiving treatment, so she makes plans to go to the US and see him.  Jung Ah and her husband continue to live apart, but they spend most of their time together and have finally found a compromise in their relationship.  Nan Hee finds out that her cancer was not as bad as the doctors had feared.  She is receiving chemo and doing well.  She finally let go of Wan and is allowing her to come and go between Slovinia and Korea.  And since Wan is gone, Nan Hee has started dating Lee Il Woo.  Wan is writing her book, “My Old Friends” and spending time with Yeon Ha.  And while each of those ending are important in themselves, the real finale moment comes as we see the group, finally taking a trip together, driving down the road in an RV.  Coming to a beach, they walk and talk in the sand before taking a seat to enjoy a scenic sunset.  Wan watches them with a smile because she finally understands that they are not “continuously walking toward death”, they are simply “living this moment fiercely and confidently”.

Should I Watch

Dear My Friends - Unspoiled Review

This is a beautiful drama about aging and the challenges both for those growing old and those who love and care for them.  The heavier realities of those struggles are generously interspersed with moments of joy and humor that remind us that life doesn’t end just because our bodies are slowing down.   Don’t be fooled into thinking that this story only applies to an older audience.  There is so much to learn from this inspiring group of older actors and the daughter has an amazing romantic storyline to bring some diversity to the aging theme.  “Dear My Friends” is not a light-hearted rom-com and the stories are sometimes sad to watch.  But if you are looking for a drama that will touch your heart and remind you to embrace life and those around you, this drama is a must-see.   I give “Dear My Friends” a 9 out of 10 ramen.

Mad Dog - Full Review

Welcome to my Mad Dog – Full Review.  After his wife and son are killed in a plane crash, an insurance investigator forms his own private investigation company called Mad Dog.  When the brother of the pilot who was responsible for the crash tries to take over his business, he vows to get his revenge.  But as they try to find the truth of what really happened that day, it seems like there is much more to the story than anyone has been told.

Mad Dog - Full Review

Yoo Ji Tae as Choi Kang Woo (Mad Dog)

Choi Kang Woo was an insurance investigator for Taeyang Insurance who was also a happy husband, and proud father until a plane crash killed his family.  Leaving the company, he struck out on his own to build a private investigation business.  Now he is the leader of a team of social misfits with a talent for disguise and detective work.  Following a group of cases, the group begins to uncover the truth about the tragic crash and those who are really responsible.

Mad Dog - Full Review

Choi Kang Woo is a man who lives surrounded by the pain of his loss.  Even after two years, his apartment is filled with the belongings of his wife and son.  His love for his team seems to be the one thing that gives him the strength to hang on.  He is loving, loyal, and protective of the other members of Mad Dog.  Yoo Ji Tae was great in this role, as a man living in a shadow, who has to fight hard for each moment of joy.  Kang Woo is quietly tragic and stubbornly stoic.  And in his darker moments, it’s his need for revenge that fuels him.

Woo Do Hwan as Kim Min Joon ( Jan Gebauer / Doctor Kim)

Kim Min Joon is the brother of the pilot who was responsible for the crash that killed Kang Woo’s family.  He worms his way into the Mad Dog team so that he can use them to clear his brother’s name.  Bringing in related cases, he slowly convinces Kang Woo and his team that his brother did not commit suicide by purposely crashing the plane that day.  Together, they just might be able to find out who was really responsible and see them punished for their actions.

Mad Dog - Full Review

Kim Min Joon is cold and calculating as a conman who has spent his whole life with only himself to rely on.  He has a dry sense of humor and a quick wit.  In the beginning, all he really cares about is using the team for his own purposes.  But as the drama goes on, his character grows and develops into someone who can be a team player and really cares about the people he is working with.  Woo Do Hwan is the standout performer of this drama.  He portrays the changes in Min Joon’s personality in a natural way that never seems forced or beyond the scope of reality.  It is impossible not to be won over by this charming character.

Ryu Hwa Young as Jang Ha Ri (Player Jang)

Jang Ha Ri is a former competitive gymnast who is more like a younger sister to Kang Woo than a teammate.  Her skills in jumping and climbing come in handy during undercover investigations.  She is also the only woman, so her beauty and charm are also used to win over or distract their targets.  She and Min Joon are attracted to each other.

Jo Jae Yoon as Park Soon Jung (Cheetah)

Park Soon Jung is an ex-convict with a criminal record.  His years as a thug make him well-connected and tough.  While he has a rough exterior, his dream is to become a pediatric nurse.  During his time pursuing nursing, he met and fell in love with Nurse Oh, who helps them when they need medical information.

Kim Hye Sung as On Noo Ri (Pentium)

On Noo Ri is the team hacker and IT specialist.  From a wealthy family, he suffered years of abuse from his father before running away to join the Mad Dog team.  Noo Ri is allergic to the sun and never leaves the office unless it is absolutely necessary.

Things I Liked

♥ Group Chemistry

Character development and chemistry are the best part of this drama.  There are so many great relationships between the team members.  The bromance of Kang Woo and Min Joon is so sweet.  The romance between Min Joon and Ha Ri is full of sparks.  The team as a whole is like one big family, who even live together in the office.  Watching this crew grow and develop makes this drama special and it really makes you root for them.

♥ Plot Web

All of the individual cases that Mad Dog investigated were interesting and I loved the way they all seemed totally unrelated in the beginning.  And then slowly, the connections start to form and we find out that the whole thing is one big web that tells the whole story.  “Mad Dog” takes it’s time to develop the plot piece by piece, rather than showing us everything from the start.

♥ Worthy Adversaries

The villains in “Mad Dog” are not your typical one-dimensional bad guys.  They are smart and subtle, and every time you think Mad Dog has their number, they manage to turn it around and get away.  This epic battle of wits kept the plot entertaining and unpredictable.  Though greed was their most obvious motive, there was much more going on with their characters.  Even as villains, there was interesting character development.

Mad Dog - Full Review

Things I Didn’t Like

 Romance

I’ve said this before, but I don’t need romance in every drama I watch.  I understand that sometimes it doesn’t fit into the plot.  Maybe it is just that the chemistry between Min Joon and Ha Ri was so good that it left me wanting more.  So, why introduce such a cute couple without letting them have at least one romantic scene at the end?  Just one nice scene between the two of them would have been enough for me, but I was disappointed that they left us hanging.

Dialog Heavy

There are times when this drama gets very dialog heavy, which means that it can get confusing if you aren’t paying close attention.  This happens less often as the plot starts to pick up, but the complex storylines do require your full attention to understand everything that is going on.

Team Backstories

The writers gave us just enough backstories about the supporting characters to make us care about them.  I would have liked to know more about each of their pasts.  And I feel like they could have traded out some of the dialog-heavy insurance explanations for more background on the team members.  There was plenty that went unsaid, and I think more scenes of them before they joined Mad Dog would have made the drama even more enjoyable.

Mad Dog - Full Review

The Ending

“Mad Dog” gives us a decently satisfactory ending.  The bad guys have all been put in prison, including Noo Ri’s father, Prosecutor On.  All of Chairman Cha’s efforts to make sure his daughter would remain untouched and in control of the company were wasted, although Hong Joo only received a 5 year sentence for her part in the crime.  Unfortunately the bad guys weren’t the only ones serving time.  Kang Woo is arrested for wire-tapping and serves one year in prison.  10 months later, Kang Woo is released and picked up by his mentor Professor Byeon.  The professor gives Kang Woo an ear piece so he can catch up with his friends, who are in the middle of an investigation.  Nurse Oh has become a part-time member of “Mad Dog” and she and Soon Jung are a couple.  Ha Ri and Min Joon also seem to be getting along as a couple.  And Min Joon has accepted Kang Woo as his “hyung” and is a full time member of the team.  It looks like this team will be together for many years to come.

Prison Playbook - Full Review

Should I Watch

Mad Dog - Unspoiled Review

“Mad Dog” is an exciting action drama, with a complex plot.  The best part of this drama is the chemistry between the Mad Dog team members.  There is a bit of romance, although not much, so if you are looking for kiss scenes and grand confessions, this is not the drama.  The pace can get bogged down at times in insurance crime theories and explanations, especially in the first half of the drama.  But their undercover investigations are entertaining and there are plenty of plot twists to hold your interest.  If you like crime action, this one is definitely worth a watch. I give Mad Dog an 8 out of 10 ramen.

Park Hae Soo as Kim Je Hyuk

Kim Je Hyuk is a minor league baseball player on his way up to the majors.  But his dream is derailed when he finds an intruder sexually assaulting his younger sister.  In a fit of anger, he chases the man down and beats him until the man is unconscious.  Leading up to the trial, everyone, including Je Hyuk and his lawyer, assumed it would be a simple case of self-defense with probation.  Unfortunately, the judge sentenced him to 1 years in prison for excessive force, and their appeal efforts are unsuccessful.  Je Hyuk is forced to adjust to the difficulties and inconveniences of life in prison.  With the help of some seasoned cellmates, Je Hyuk doesn’t just adjust, but seems to thrive and grow through the hardships.  He uses his time to continue training, so his skills won’t become rusty.

Run On - Full Review

Kim Je Hyuk is a wonderful character.  He is a simple person who is incredibly good at baseball, but not much else.  Interestingly, this is one of his greatest charms and the thing that wins over the people around him.  From the warden to the guards;  people can’t seem to help but want to see him succeed.  Because his life has been focused primarily on baseball, his social skills have always been limited. But his time in prison teaches him to appreciate human interaction, as a friend and a boyfriend.  Park Hae Soo’s ability to keep an expressionless face through the most ridiculous scenes is admirable.  The subtleties in Je Hyuk’s character give it charm and flair.  I really loved watching this character blossom and change over the course of his years’ imprisonment.

Jung Kyung Ho as Lee Joon Ho

Lee Joon Ho was Je Hyuk’s childhood friend.  The two of them had played baseball together and both lived with the coach’s family.  After suffering a traumatic car accident, Joon Ho quit baseball and they lost contact.  But Joon Ho always remained Je Hyuk’s greatest fan.  Transferring from his current post as a Detention Officer, Joon Ho transfers to Je Hyuk’s prison in order to protect him and help him train.  Joon Ho also begins a romantic relationship with Je Hyuk’s sister, but he keeps it a secret from his friend, in case he will be angry.

Prison Playbook - Full Review

Lee Joon Ho is a steadfast and devoted friend.  Even though he was a better player than Je Hyuk in high school, he’s never competitive or petty about his own skills.  Joon Ho is smart and driven, but his need to be challenged has left behind a string of jobs that never hold his interest for long.  Jung Kyung Ho played this role so well.  In the beginning, he is mystified by how close Je Hyuk is to the guards and inmates but he slowly warms up to them and establishes his own friendships.  Joon Ho is reserved and careful, which makes him the perfect advisor to his friend.

Krystal as Kim Ji Ho

Kim Ji Ho is the daughter of Je Hyuk and Joon Ho’s high school coach.  She and Je Hyuk have been dating for 5 years, but she broke up with him because he continually neglected their relationship because of baseball.  But despite their break up, Ji Ho still loves Je Hyuk and visits him in prison.

Jung Woong In as Paeng Se Yoon

Guard Paeng has been a guard at the penitentiary for years and is nearing the end of his career.  At first glance, it seems like he doesn’t really care about the job or the inmates.  He is loud and verbally abusive most of the time.  But as we get to know him, we find out that the tough exterior covers over a heart of gold.  His greatest goal is to see the inmates rehabilitated and set free to live their lives on the right road.

Things I Liked

♥ All that Bromance

I love a good bromance, and “Prison Playbook” is full of them.  Each individual relationship has it’s own feel and chemistry, which I really appreciated.  Watching the group knit itself together in a way that offered each of them the support and love they needed was heartwarming and interesting.  They created a family dynamic complete with a protective father and sibling rivalry.  It’s hard to even pick a favorite, but the main storyline between Je Hyuk and Joon Ho is an obvious one, because there is so much time spent developing it.  And the loyalty that “Jailbird” gives Je Hyuk is also a highlight for me.

♥ Humor

Comedy is not really my thing; especially the obvious slat-stick style that seems to be so popular in Kdrama.  So I was particularly pleased with the understated humor throughout “Prison Playbook”.  I found myself laughing out loud at least a couple times each episode.  The cast was hilarious and the humor was delivered perfectly.  Every time they moved their table out of the way before a fight broke out, I would chuckle again.  It never seemed to get old.

♥ Staggered Storylines

Unlike the average kdrama, “Prison Playbook” introduces new characters and has characters leave at a staggered pace throughout the drama.  This keeps the storylines moving with fresh topics.  Inmates come and go, and each one brings their own backstory.  Arranging the stories this way also keeps the drama from being overly predictable from Episode 1, which was really nice.

Things I Didn’t Like

“Loony’s” Ending

Loony’s character was a favorite of mine.  Lee Kyu Hyung played the role perfectly, and I always enjoyed his scenes.  Of course, I understand that the life of an addict is a neverending battle, but after struggling through withdrawals and staying strong during his whole incarceration, I was brokenhearted to see him fall right back into that life.  And it was even more sad that we never hear anything about him again.  Without the love of his cellmates, it is doubtful that he will ever be able to break free from his addiction again, and that is so disapppointing.

Long Episodes

Plenty of kdramas run episodes that are about an hour and 20 minutes, which seems a bit long, but “Prison Playbook” goes one step further, with the average episode being about 90 minutes long.  To be fair, they never seemed too long or boring to me;  that’s not the problem.  Personally, I have no trouble sitting down to an episode that is so long, but I know many fans who are looking to grab a quick episode in the midst of their busy schedules.  For some, long episodes like this may make it harder for them to watch.

No Reunion Ending

I really expected to have one scene of Je Hyuk pitching while a group of his friends cheered him on from the stands.  A scene like this could have provided some closure to many of the characters.  It seemed like the perfect setup for something like this, so I was surprised when it didn’t happen.  There are just so many great characters that I would like to have caught up with one more time.  But let’s be honest here.  “Prison Playbook” never takes the easy way out, and my dream ending wouldn’t have done justice to the dose of realism that the writers tried to stay true to.

True Beauty - Full Review

The Ending

Well, I already complained about not getting the full closure that I wanted, but “Prison Playbook” ends as steadily as it began, and we do get some happy endings.  Guard Paeng is shown giving a presentation about his job for his daughter’s class at school.  He seems happy and more at peace with his life and work now that he has overcome some of his guilt for the fire.  Min Chul finally receives an early release.  He is sent of by Officer Paeng and greeted by his daughter and his former cellmate, Lee Joo Hyung.  Captain Yoo gets the approval for an appeal to his case, so even though the cell is looking pretty empty these days, hopefully he will also be leaving soon.  Jailbird is released and takes a job as Je Hyuk’s new agent, so it looks like they will continue their relationship.  Joon Ho admits to Je Hyuk that he is dating Je Hee, so he doesn’t have to hide that from him anymore.  And lastly, our lead finishes his sentence and greets Ji Ho with a big kiss, ignoring the reporters and cameras.  And the final scene shows Je Hyuk back on the pitching mound.  The team loses the game but it’s still a win for Je Hyuk and he is confident that he will still succeed.  I was sad to see this one end, but I really enjoyed the story.

Should I Watch

Prison Playbook - Unspoiled Review

This is a gem of a drama and I can’t believe I waited so long to watch it myself.  The stories of love and friendship are rich and rewarding.  Surprisingly, each episode is a full 90 minutes, at least, so if you are looking for quick and light, this isn’t a good choice.  Also, while there is a bit of romance, it is definitely not the focus, so don’t expect a traditional love story here.  But if you love a vast array of interesting characters with plenty of understated humor, you are definitely in for a treat.  The stories are well-paced and revolving throughout the drama and these guys will make you fall in love with each of them for totally different reasons.   I give Prison Playbook an 9 out of 10 ramen.

Run On - Full Review

Ji Chang Wook as Park Jae Won

Park Jae Won is a successful architect who works for his father’s company.  Using some much needed vacation time, he rents a camping car and books a reservation to live on the beach for a month.  He meets a waitress who works on the beach, and they fall in love and even have their own private “wedding”ceremony.  When he is suddenly called back to Seoul, they make plans to meet on the last day of the month, but she never shows up and ignores his calls and texts.  But rather than moving on with his life, Jae Won continues to pine away for the woman he loves and wonders what went wrong.  He spends his days wallowing in alchohol and depression and then one day, he  her runs into her again by coincidence.  Even though she tells him that their relationship is over, he is determined to find out what really happened and win her heart again.

Run On - Full Review

Jae Won is a sensitive and caring character.  He doesn’t take his feelings or his relationships lightly.  Ji Chang Wook really played this role well, and it was fun to see him in a more mature and serious role.  Jae Won’s desperation to find closure in a shattered relationship made his character relateable and full of raw emotion, but it can also be seen as a bit obsessive and emotionally unstable.  Many fans were indignant at the amount of emotional pain he suffered because of Eun Oh, but I believe his character was also strong enough to forgive.

Kim Ji Won as Lee Eun Oh/Yoon Sun Ah

Lee Eun Oh reached a point in her life where all she wanted to do was run away.  So she bought a bus ticket to a small beach town, found a job as a waitress, and created a whole new identity for herself.  Sun Ah was everything Eun Oh had always wanted to be but couldn’t;  she was fun, free-spirited, and confident.  And when she met a handsome surfer who was there on vacation, she fell madly in love and decided to embrace her new found freedom.  But when he makes plans to see her back in Seoul, she realizes that fake identity is about to be discovered, not just by him but also her best friends.  Embarassed by the whole situation, she heartlessly breaks up with him with no explanation, even though her feelings haven’t changed at all.  So, when he finds her again and begs her to tell him why she is torn between her own pride and her love.

Run On - Full Review

Lee Eun Oh is a complicated and insecure character.  She has a dream about the kind of person she would like to be, but never had the confidence to act on it, until she became Sun Ah.  Kim Ji Won did a wonderful job with this role.  Her ability to personify the almost manic personality of Eun Oh was believable and genuine.  While Eun Oh’s behavior was excessive at times and her character seemed full of human flaws, it was a realistic portrayal of someone who struggles with fear and self-esteem.  And it was rewarding to watch her grow and eventually come to a point where she could accept that her true self was a combination of Sun Ah and Eun Oh and that she was deserving of love.

Kim Min Seok as Choi Kyung Joon

Choi Kyung Joon is Jae Won’s cousin, who works with him as an architect.  He has been dating Rin Yi for years and is a devoted and attentive boyfriend.  At this point in their relationship, things between them are stable and comfortable, although he would like to get married and give Rin Yi a more secure life.

So Ju Yeon as Seo Rin Yi

Rin Yi is childhood friends with Eun On and Gun.  The three of them have been close since elementary school.  Rin Yi likes to live simply and isn’t interested in material possessions or social status, which is a frustration to her long-time boyfriend, Kyung Joon.  She goes from one part-time job to the next without much thought; as long as she has the money to pay her bills she is fine.

Kang Gu is an author who lives in Eun Oh’s house with her.  He hasn’t been in a romantic relationship in three years, and still carries a torch for the last girl he dated, Sun Young.  Part of his problem with finding a girlfriend is that everyone believes he must be in love with either Eun Oh or Rin Yi.  While he isn’t in love with them, he isn’t willing to give up his best friends for anyone.

Han Ji Eun as Oh Sun Young

Oh Sun Young is a high school PE teacher with a bold and confident personality.  She has a long history of one-night stands but never dates anyone for long.  Though she tries to make this seem like a carefree life-style choice, the truth is that she is still in love with Gun, who she dated and broke up with.

Things I Liked

♥ Interview Style

The “mockumentary” approach to this drama was fresh and unique.  Listening to the characters tell parts of the story in their own words was an interesting way to get to know them and their perspectives.  This method also allowed the web of characters and their connections to be unveiled piece by piece.  It’s the first time I have seen this technique used in a kdrama, and I enjoyed the feeling of intimacy it created between the characters and the audience.

♥ Extra Episode

I really loved that they added an extra episode to the end of this series.  There was a feeling of getting to see what happened next, with each of the 6 characters.  And if that wasn’t reward enough, I certainly loved seeing more of Officer Oh Dong Shik and his story.  I had read that this is the first segment in a multi-part series, so maybe we will see more of Officer Oh, although nothing has been confirmed yet.  Either way, his sweet little love story was really fun to watch and so were the scenes of Jae Won and Eun Oh happy and comfortable together once again.

♥ Realistic View

It would be easy to write off the characters in this drama as immature and unlikeable.  They are not the perfect rom-com leads whose biggest struggle is a misunderstanding that can be easily cleared up.  These characters are deeply flawed and the mistakes they make are real and deliberate.  But those elements give them a humanness that is often missing in kdrama, particularly in romantic drama.  Yes, sometimes it’s nice to disappear into a drama where everything is happy and perfect, but sometimes it’s equally nice to be reminded that we all have imperfections and room to grown.

Things I Didn’t Like

Jae Won’s Dad

Jae Won’s Dad, CEO Park, was a weird character for me. We got to see just enough of him for him to criticize everything his son did and destroy his nephews long-term romantic relationship.  What a guy!  Also, I think it would be natural to ask the question, what will he do in the future if Jae Won decides to marry Eun Oh (again)?  His disapproval would definitely cause problems for this happy couple, and after all they have already been through, that is just sad to think about.  There wasn’t enough storyline for CEO Park to have anything but disdain for his character.

Seo Rin Yi

Okay, I really loves Rin Yi in the beginning, but I felt like she was really inconsiderate to Kyung Joon and unwilling to compromise.  It’s not that she shouldn’t be able to choose how she wants to live, but it seems like they should have been having some serious conversations about their future, rather than pretending everything was fine.  And the fact that she could just walk away without any effort to reach an understanding also seemed unfair to Kyung Joon.  Obviously he held expectations of her that she wasn’t interested in fulfilling, but I don’t think leaving him with no warning was fair to him or their relationship.

Sun Young as an Outsider

This drama is built around a complex web of characters that are all inter-related in an interesting way.  But I felt like Sun Young’s character was the only one that didn’t fit into the inner circle of leads.  Yes, she dated Gun and she knew Eun Oh and Rin Yi through him, but it would have been nice if she were more involved in some of the group interactions.  I didn’t feel like we got to know her quite as well as the rest of them and that was unfortunate because her character was so interesting and different from the others,

True Beauty - Full Review

The Ending

This is another drama where it’s not easy to determine whether it was a happy ending or not.  I would say there was one happy ending, a to be determined ending, a sad ending and a surprise ending.  Let’s start with the sad.  Kyung Joon and Rin Yi broke up and there doesn’t seem to be any reconciliation in their future.  Kyung Joon is devasted, but Rin Yi seems to be resolute in her decision.  The surprise ending is the bonus love story of Dong Shik and the actress Ha Nae.  They spend her birthday together and she surprises him with a kiss before going back to work.  It’s their very own one-act play and it was very sweet.  The to be determined ending is for Gun and Sun Young.  They meet for drinks and he tells her that she should come back when she is ready to finally settle down.  The sub-text is that he will be waiting for her, so there is hope that they still have a happy ending ahead of them.  And for our leads, they are finally back together and happy.  The journey was trecherous, but for me, the conclusion was rewarding.

Should I Watch

Lovestruck in the City

“Lovestruck in the City” is unusual for a kdrama, which was frustrating for some fans.  It is a more realistic look at love and life, full of characters who are far from the ideal romantic heroes.  The story is also told partially through documentary interviews rather than visual scenes, which some didn’t enjoy.   If you can’t embrace characters full of human flaws, then skip this one.  The characters can be frustrating and unlikeable at times.  But it you like a story that shows the challenges and failures that we face in our relationships, and the struggle to find love despite our imperfections, this is an interesting drama with a strong cast.   I give “Lovestruck in the City” an 8 out of 10 ramen.

Shin Hye Sun as Kim So Yong/ Jang Bong Hwan

Jang Bong Hwan is a master chef for the Blue House, until he is framed for a crime he didn’t commit.  While trying to escape the police, he falls into a swimming pool and wakes up in the Joseon Period, in the body of the Queen So Yong.  Initially, his only goal is finding a way to return to his own time and his own body.  But as the days go by, and the memories and feelings of So Yong begin to invade his heart and mind, he begins to grow attached to the people he is with.  His limited knowledge of history tells him that the current king, Cheoljong, is remembered as a failure, but what if he and those who believe in the king could work together to change that?

Mr. Queen - Full Review

Shin Hye Sun is truly an amazing actress and she positively shines in this role.  Playing a man trapped in a woman’s body required some physical actions to convey the point;  every action had to be exaggerated to portray maleness and she embraced that challenge completely.  Jang Bong Hwan is not a great guy in the beginning.  He is a conceited womanizer who only cares about his own success.  But his attachment to the servants he is surrounded by and the king that So Yong loves, begins to thaw his cold heart.  Bong Hwan is quick on his feet and determined to win.  And through his time in Joseon, he also becomes loyal and devoted to those he loves.

Kim Jung Hyun as King Cheoljong

King Cheoljong is a king in a palace full of people who want him dead.  Both the Queen Dowager and the Grand Queen Dowager have plans to replace him with someone loyal to their cause.  He is in love with the Royal Concubine, who he has know since she befriended him and saved his life when they were children.  Knowing that Queen So Yong was chosen because of her family connection to the Grand Queen Dowager, he distrusts her, and even tries to kill her.  But slowly he notices that she seems to have changed and is actually trying to help him.  Little by little, he begins to trust her and slowly falls in love with her.  Now his dream is to become a powerful and righteous King who can rule the country with his Queen at his side.

Mr. Queen - Full Review

Due to the difficult situation he finds himself in as King, Cheoljong is cold and distrustful of everyone except those in his closest inner circle.  But his true goal has always been to make a Joseon that is fair and just for it’s people.  Secretly he has trained to become a strong warrior and a wise King.  Kim Jung Hyun played the role well and his chemistry with Shin Hye Sun was fantastic.  Watching their scenes together was a highlight for me.

Mr. Queen manages to hold a great balance between the dramatic moments and the comic relief.  Many kdramas start with some comedy, but it tends to fizzle out as the episodes go on.  But not so with this drama.  They continued to add humor into all the episodes right up until the end, and those scenes never felt forced or out of place.  I have seen few dramas that have been able to attain this kind of perfect balance throughout.

♥ Supporting Cast

It seems impossible to talk about this drama without giving credit to the amazing supporting cast.  Narrowing it down to just a few was difficult because there were so many more great ones.  From family and friends to the palace staff, they all gave unique performances that caused all of their characters to stand out and be remembered.  I especially loved Prince Yeongpyeon, Hong Byul Gam, Man Bok, and Court Lady Choi.

♥ Hong Byul Gam

Hong Byul Gam played such an interesting role as the guy who knew everything that was happening in the palace.  He seemed lazy and happy-go-lucky but he was always the first person to make connections and understand what was actually happening.  Every time he would figure out something before everyone else, it would make me smile.  And so I loved it when they made him the official Royal Investigator.  It was obviously the job he was born to do.

Things I Didn’t Like

More So Yong

It seems like if they were going to have So Yong come back in the end, it would have been nice to have seen more glimpses of her throughout the drama.  As it is, all the things that Cheoljong fell in love with seem to come from Bong Hwan;  the idioms, the crazy stories, the bold unpredictableness.  They could have shown more scenes where So Yong is obviously in control and interacting with the King, to give both the audience and Cheoljong a chance to fall in love with her too.  I think this would have made a smoother ending for those who were unhappy with it.

Isn’t That the Same Thing?

Both of the second leads have moments where they are cast into a bad light for things that the leads do later.  First Hwa Jin is villainized for lying about her true identity and taking credit for something that she didn’t do.  But in the end, this is exactly what the Queen ends up doing, since we must assume that she never admits that it was Bong Hwan who really helped the King keep the throne, otherwise he wouldn’t still be wondering why things feel a little different.  And then we have Bong Hwan criticizing Byung In for not recognizing that the Queen wasn’t really the Queen.  While the King does feel some sort of change, he doesn’t seem to realize that the person he came to love is now gone either.  It just seems ironic how closely these scenes mirror each other, and the second leads are bad because of it, while the leads are not.

Poor Bong Hwan

On the opposite end of the above spectrum, I would have liked to have seen a little more of Bong Hwan at the end. Something showing how he carried the friends and memories of the past with him in his modern life would have been fun.  That would have also reflected how much his time there had helped him to change and grow as a person.

The Ending

Well whether or not “Mr. Queen” had a happy ending is not an easy question and has been heavily contested by fans.  First let’s talk about the easy stuff.  The bady guys were removed from power and influence.  Jwa Geun is sent into exile to live out his life in disgrace.  The Queen Dowagers have been sent to the West Palace, where they will also live in isolation, removed of all their power.  The only obviously sad ending is for  Kim Byung In who is killed protecting the Queen’s life.  On the King’s side, Hwa Jin is finally seeing Yeongpyeong as more than just a friend.  Man Bok and Court Lady Choi seem to be happy together, and now that the Queen has lifted the ban on palace staff marrying, I hear wedding bells in their future.  So now onto the more difficult topic;  our lead couple.  Bong Hwan has been shot back through time, into his own body.  Rather than being wanted for a crime, he is now being rewarded for his contribution as a whistle blower.  He reads in a history book that he and Cheoljong did manage to make the King into a successful ruler.  And So Yong is now back in her own body, and happy with the King.  Their relationship seems to be going well, although the King does confess that sometimes he feels like he has lost something.  While many fans felt that separating Bong Hwan from the King was not a happy ending, I was satisfied that he needed to return to his own time.  But it was not without a bittersweet feeling that these 2 who had loved each other so much would never be together again.  What about you?  Did you like the ending?

Mr. Queen - Unspoiled Review

Mr. Queen is one of those rare dramas that manages to cover a multitude of genres.  It is historical, comedy, romance and plenty of drama.  It also manages to use comedy to advance the story without being heavy-handed or over-the-top, which I seldom find. The chemistry between the leads is amazing and so fun to watch. If you don’t enjoy sci-fi premises or body switch humor, you may not enjoy this.  But honestly, I think this drama has something for everyone.  I definitely recommend you give it a try.    I give Mr. Queen an 10 out of 10 ramen.

The Leads

Run On - Full Review

Shin Se Kyung as Oh Mi Joo

Oh Mi Joo works privately, writing Korean subtitles for movies.   Life for her is unconventional, as she usually works from her bedroom and often writes through the night and sleeps during the day.  When she is recruited to work as a translator for a national sprinter, she jumps at the chance for some easy income.  But instead, she finds herself becoming tangled in the complicated life and relationships of the runner.  Despite the fact that he doesn’t even like movies and has lived a strictly regimented life that is the absolute opposite of her own, she feels an undeniable connection to this handsome athlete.

Run On - Full Review

Shin Se Kyung is perfect as this quirky writer who is straightforward to a fault.  Oh Mi Joo has struggled through life without a family or financial stability.  These struggles have given her a confidence and toughness that cover some deep scars due to those who hurt her and took advantage of her along the way.  Love and happily-ever-afters have never been a part of her experience, so she is distrustful of romance and relationships.  Oh Mi Joo’s only enduring relationship is with her mentor and roommate, Mae.

Im Shi Wan as Ki Seon Gyeom

Ki Seon Gyeom became a national athlete because his politician father insisted that all of his family members needed to help him raise his public image.  But when he finds out that a younger team mate is being abused by older team members he refuses to sit back and do nothing.  Unfortunately his actions get him kicked off the team.  Left to his own devices he moves into Mi Joo’s living room and decides to use his personal sports knowledge to work as an agent for other athletes, starting with his bullied friend on his old team.

Run On - Full Review

Ki Seon Gyeom is adorably blunt and socially awkward.  Because of his own sheltered and dysfunctional family, he doesn’t really understand the feelings of the people around him.  But he is also kind and generous at heart, even if he doesn’t know how to show it.  Seon Gyeom is willing to stand up for the people he cares about, even when he knows it will cost him.  Im Shi Wan has the perfect cool exterior to play this part.  Watching Mi Joo help  him raise his emotional intelligence was cute and inspiring.

Supporting Characters

Run On - Full Review

Choi Soo Young as Seo Dan Ah

Seo Dan Ah is Seon Gyeom’s agent.  Rude and selfish, she always gets things done her way.  Dan Ah has no time for personal relationships of any kind, whether romantic or family.  Her longtime work relationship with Seon Gyeom is the closest thing she has to emotional ties.  Until she meets Lee Young Hwa, and the handsome painter begins breaking down her walls.

Kang Tae Oh as Lee Young Hwa

Lee Young Hwa is a young art student.  He is honest and hard-working.  When Dan Ah shows an interest in his painting, he instantly likes her and begins pursing her romantically.  Young Hwa also meets Seon Gyeom by coincidence and the 2 become friends and eventually roommates.

Lee Bong Ryun as Park Mae Yi

Mae Yi is the owner of the house Mi Joo lives in.  She has been Mi Joo’s best friend and mentor for years.  Mae is introverted and quiet.  She owns her own company that does subtitling for movies, and hires Mi Joo whenever she can.  When Seon Gyeom needs a place to live, she agrees to let him stay in her living room and acts as advisor for both Mi Joo and Seon Gyeom.

Things I Liked

♥ Movie Cut-Scenes

Because Mi Joo is a subtitle writer and movie fanatic, it fit perfectly to use the “Run On” characters in movie cut scenes.  It allowed for fun costuming and a little creativity in the storyline.  Seeing them dressed in classic Hollywood styles was really cute and must have been a great opportunity for the cast to act in different genres.

♥ More Than Similarities

One of the strengths of “Run On” is that it is a realistic love story.  There is no ideal romance;  it’s just a guy and girl with their own scars and baggage learning to be in a relationship.  Even in the end, they can both admit that they still don’t really understand each other.  But  that doesn’t really matter if they love each other and do their best to be considerate of the others’ feelings.  In other words, love is deeper than just having things in common or sharing certain personality traits.  Love is equal parts emotion and effort.

♥ Confession Scene

Okay.  I have to say that the confession scene between Young Hwa and his long time bestie Kwon Young Il was one of the sweetest scenes I have ever seen.  To watch Young Il agonize over his feelings and finally work up the courage was great, but it was Young Hwa’s reaction that really moved me.  Without missing a beat or making his friend feel awkward, he hugged him and cried with him and told him how unfair it was for him to love someone who didn’t love him back in that way.  It was such a beautiful picture of real friendship and empathy.  Really well done!

Things I Didn’t Like

No Family Resolution

It was a little sad to me that even on his deathbed, Dan Ah’s father never really apologized for the mess he had made of their family.  Sure, he did give a half hearted “I love you” to his grieving daughter, but that really did nothing to bring about any kind of resolution for his relationships or the relationships of those he was leaving behind.  At lease, Dan Ah and her younger brother were working to establish some kind of relationship, but I would have liked to see more.

Dan Ah’s Illness

I felt like the storyline involving Dan Ah being sick was handled strangely.  It was almost like they had originally planned to do more with it and then they either just forgot or changed their minds.  She brought it up several times on her own and then we see both her and her brother faint from it, and then it’s never mentioned again.  It just seemed like there was supposed to be more there.

Poor Ki Eun Bi

The writers really had no love for the poor daughters in this drama.  How can you not feel sorry for Ki Eun Bi.  She spent her life doing her father’s bidding at the risk of losing the one man she had ever loved.  Luckily her boyfriend was understanding, but it could have been much worse.  Her career suffered from the stress of it all.  And after all that sacrifice, her father still threw her to the wolves to save his own career.  She really deserved so much more.

True Beauty - Full Review

The Ending

It’s pretty much a happy ending for everyone, including a happy divorce for Seon Gyeum’s mom.  Seom Gyeum’s dad fails to gain the sympathy vote by using Eun Bi and loses the election.  Luckily, Eun Bi’s boyfriend choses to believe her side of the story, so they are still together.  Young Il’s family goes on a camping trip where they bond and Young Il’s mother  finally seems ready to accept the fact that he is gay.  Mae and Je Wook have started dating.  Dan Ah has taken over her father’s business and Young Hwa has his paintings displayed in an art show.  So when he finds Dan Ah in a gallery admiring his latest piece Dan Ah finally decides to quit running away and give their relationship a try.  And our lead couple are happy together and Seon Gyeum is learning how to communicate his feelings.  The final scene shows the cast in a theater at Seon Gyeum’s mom’s movie premiere.  Her ex-husband shows up with flowers so maybe things aren’t really over for them after all.  And that’s a wrap, ya’all.

Run On - Unspoiled Review

Run on is an interesting drama with slow moving plot that relies on the characters themselves more than actions and events.  If you are looking for an action-packed story full of excitement and humor, this drama is probably not a good choice.  But if you enjoy the slow-burn romance that digs deep into character development and emotional growth, this drama is definitely worth checking out.   I give Run On an 8 out of 10 ramen.
