Kim Myung Min as Yang Jong Hoon

Yang Jong Hoon is a strict, no-nonsense law professor at an elite law school.  As a former prosecutor, he has has managed to make a lot of enemies, including Seo Byung Joo, who is also a former prosecutor.  Professor Yang and Byung Joo worked together closely until Byung Joo got then-prosecutor Yang fired to cover up his own criminal actions.  So, when Byung Hoon suddenly turns up dead in his office on campus, Professor Yang is a natural suspect.  He is arrested and there is just enough circumstantial evidence to make him look guilty.  Luckily for him, he has some amazing students who are willing to lay everything on the line to make sure that an innocent man doesn’t take the blame for a crime he didn’t commit.

Law School - Full Review

Professor Yang is careful and deliberate in all he does.  For him life is just like the puzzles he likes to complete in his free time; every piece fits somewhere if you take your time and work with it.  In the beginning, Professor Yang doesn’t seem like a very likeable character, but with time we learn that his aloofness is an attempt to hide his true heart, which really cares about those he teaches.  What he really wants most is to to see his students succeed, both for their own sake and the sake of the system they will represent.  Kim Myung Min is great in this role.  He portrays the polished role with  finesse, while still managing to hint at just a bit of parental tough love.

Kim Bum as  Han Joon Hwi

Han Joon Hwi is the nephew of Seo Byung Joo, the murdered professor.  As a law student at the school where his uncle and Jong Hoon teach, he finds himself quickly pulled into the middle of the case and even allows enough suspicion to make himself a suspect early on.  As a star pupil who never believes that Joon Hoon is guilty, Joon Hwi puts all of his skills and connections to the test as he works with his classmates to discover the truth.

Law School - Full Review

Han Joon Hwi is smart and even-tempered.  He is also handsome and a natural leader, which has helped make him a very successful law student.  To insure that he doesn’t receive any special treatment, he keeps the fact that Seo Byung Joo is his uncle a secret from even his closest classmates, until the murder brings it all out in the open.  Although he is a strong student who excels well on his own, he puts together a study group to help the other students in his class and to make friends.  In the beginning, Joon Hwi does come across as cold and arrogant, much like his role model, Professor Yang.  This is great because it really leaves the audience wondering who we are supposed to trust in all this, and that keeps the mystery interesting.  Kim Bum is making a name for himself these days playing enigmatic roles like this that leave us guessing if he is good or evel.  That wicked glint in his eyes gives us just enough pause to wonder if we are being conned by his flawless charm.  I love him taking on such complex roles and making them work.

Ryu Hye Young as Kang Sol (A)/Kang Dan

Kang Sol A is a student from a poor family who attends school on scholarship. When she was a high school student, she was accused of school bullying and met Professor Yang, who was the prosecutor in charge of the case.  Because of being unfairly accused, Sol A becomes determined to be a lawyer.  Sol A is especially close to Joon Hwi and attends his study group.  There is obvious romantic chemistry there, but it never goes any farther that that.  She and Joon Hwi take the lead in Professor Yang’s case and as she investigates, Sol A finds out that her twin sister, who mysteriously moved away to the US several years ago, may play an important role in finding a motive to Byung Joo’s murder.

Law School - Full Review

Sol A is hard-working and driven.  Her sister, Dan was the smart one in the family who always wanted to be a lawyer, but when Dan picked up suddenly and moved to the US without any explanation to her family, Sol A uses Dan’s study materials to try it herself.  Because of this, Sol A isn’t confident in her abilities and never really believes she deserves to be there.  But that also gives her the determination to study around the clock and push herself to the breaking point to succeed.  Ryu Hye Young is perfect for this role of the quirky, slightly frantic student with an unexplainable charm that makes her endearing.  When you see Joon Hwi smile at her indulgingly you totally get where he’s coming from.

Kim Eun Sook is another law professor who teaches at the school.  She is the teacher with heart, who takes on the boring subject of civil law and tries to make it fun and exciting for her students.  She is also the only colleague that Professor Yang can really confide in and trust.

Lee Soo Kyung as Kang Sol (B)

Kang Sol B’s also has a family connection among school administration that she keeps secret.  Her dad is the Vice Dean.  From a wealthy family of judges, Sol B’s mother has spent her whole life pushing Sol B to be the best law student, even when that meant submitting plagerized work.  But after years of being pushed to the brink, Sol B may be a the end of her rope.

Lee David as Seo Ji Ho

Seo Ji Ho is another law student who is Joon Hwi’s roommate.  Like everyone else in this group, Seo Ji Ho has a secret in his past.  Seo Ji Ho’s father was framed for selling dangerous toys in his company, that resulted in the death of some children.  His father’s guilt caused him to kill himself.  But Ji Ho finds out that Byung Joo, who was the prosecutor at the time, was actually the one responsible for framing his father.  Now he wants to expose the truth and clear his father’s name.

Things I Liked

♥ Lots of Backstories

Though it may have left us wanting more about certain characters, “Law School” gives us a large group of diverse students who all get a decent amount of screen time.  Male and female characters are equally represented and supporting characters are allowed their own chances to shine and grow.  I really loved that they didn’t just focus on the lead characters and how the supporting characters interacted with them.  Each character had their own story to tell.

♥ Powerful Message

Professor Yang’s lasting message in “Law School” is that the law itself is neither good or bad, it’s the people who represent it that give it direction.  As a teacher, he is determined to produce students who will become just lawyers who aim to protect the legal system and all those who struggle because of it.  Of course, greed and self-interest can sneak in on even those with the best intentions, but it is a noble goal and a worthwhile endeavor anyway.

♥ Not Simple Stereotypes

It’s common, especially in school dramas, for the characters to become very stereotypical and one-dimensional; this one is the rich one, or the smart one, or the funny one.  But “Law School” created complex characters who were realistic and represented by more than one personality trait.  This also allowed for an element of mystery as we got to know each one, because it was never obvious whether the character was good or evil, and in many cases, once you knew them better, you found they were neither  black or white, but some hazy shade of gray.

Things I Didn’t Like

Cheating

I felt like Seung Jae’s cheating storyline was a bit far-fetched.  For an institution that obviously takes their exams very seriously, the idea that one student could repeatedly break into various teacher’s laptop just doesn’t make sense.  Really, even the first time, no matter how much shock she is in, I can’t see Professor Kim just handing a student her computer and password when she knows the test is inside.  But then to turn around and get Professor Yang’s computer as well was really just too much.  It was an interesting twist to his character, which I appreciated, but not very realistic.

Not Really About Murder

“Law School” is one of those funny dramas that starts out as a murder crime story but then the murder gets solved and it moves on to the bigger picture.  In the end, Byung Joo’s death wasn’t really that important to the theme of the show.  The focus is really Assemblyman Ko and the corrupt prosecutors who covered for his many crimes.  It’s a classic case of the bait and switch, which isn’t necessarily bad.  It keeps the plot from becoming too predictable.  But it is funny when what was supposed to be the main mystery gets solved before the end of the show.

Sol A and Dan

Erica Shin’s character was a weird one for me.  Having Sol A have a mysterious twin sister was a fun twist, and having her involved in a scandal with Assemblyman Ko was interesting, if not a bit too convenient.  But the way that Erica just ran away and broke all contact with her family was extreme.  It would have been nice to see some kind of resolution to their family story, at least.  Instead, Erica leaves Korea again without even taking the time to meet with her twin privately.  It’s not like her family did anything to her and they really didn’t deserve to be treated with such disrespect.

The Scholar Who Walks the Night - Full Review

The Ending

“Law School” does a nice job of trying to tie up all the loose threads for the many plots and sub-plots they have introduced.  Our team of teachers and students finally gets their revenge on Assemblyman Ko and he is arrested and put in jail.  It was a little disappointing that all of his underlings walked away to continue their shady dealings, but you can’t take them all down at once, I guess.  And in case you think Prosecutor Jin has changed, he is already trying to make a deal with Ji Ho over his father’s case.  Luckily, Ji Ho isn’t interested in settling for anthing less than full justice.  The final mock trials happen, with Ji Ho, Bok Gi, and Ye Bum winning their round.  Sol A, Sol B, and Joon Hwi, technically lose, although their loss is caused by a penalty that proves their integrity is more important than the victory.  So that’s actually a win!  The whole group gets together to celebrate all they have achieved.  After a small time jump, we are back to see Sol A and Joon Hwi using their degrees to help an elderly man with his legal troubles.  Ye Seul is providing legal counseling for victims of sexual and domestic abuse.  And Sol B and her parents are receiving some much-needed counseling of their own.  Seung Jae has asked for the maximum amount of punishment for his crimes, so it is possible that he may spend some time in prison, although we don’t see what actually happens with his case.  The show ends with Sol A, Joon Hwi, and Professor Yang meeting in the school entryway, with the statue of Justice looming in the background, as the trio powerwalks down the hallway.  It seems like this team will be together for a long time to come.

Should I Watch

Law School - Unspoiled Review

“Law School”  is a suspenseful murder mystery told through the eyes of a group of law students who work together to investigate the case.  As with many law dramas, “Law School” can get overwhelming with all the lingo and indepth dialogue, so it’s not an easy, fast watch.  Also, because many characters have their own sub-plots, there are a lot of storylines to keep track of and many of the stories are complex and confusing.  The drama doesn’t even include romance in the list of genres it might be considered, so don’t watch this expecting a romantic love story.  But what “Law School” does do is present an interesting story full of unpredictable twists and turns that will keep you on your toes and engaged. The cast is amazing and character development isn’t isolated to only the main roles.    I found it smart, insighful, and intriguing.  I give “Law School” a 8 out of 10 ramen.

The Story

The Scholar Who Walks the Night - Full Review

Kim Sung Yeol is a guardian vampire who has spent the last 120 years trying to avenge the death of his first love, which was caused by the evil vampire, Gwi.  During that 120 years, Gwi has been ruling the Joseon Empire from behind the scenes, by controlling the king and all his decisions.  Sung Yeol finds an unlikely ally in a struggling male book seller who turns out to be a female in disguise.  With her help, Sung Yeol hopes to find a missing book, written by the deceased Crown Prince, that gives a detailed strategy of how to defeat Gwi once and for all.  But Gwi is not going down without a fight!

Lee Joon Gi as Kim Sung Yeol

Kim Sung Yeol has a happy life as a scholar who is best friends with the Crown Prince, and is engaged to marry the woman he loves.  But that all changes when his fiancé’s death is caused by an evil vampire, Gwi, and Sung Yeol is chosen as the next guardian vampire.  Fast forward to the present;  for the last 120 years, Sung Yeol has been looking for  a way to get revenge for the loss of his first love.  Gwi is hidden safely in a lair under the palace, where he has controlled the country through his power over the king for over 100 years.  But while the Crown Prince was alive, he wrote a strategy for how Gwi could be defeated, and hid it in a book that Sung Yeol is searching for.  If he can find the book and get rid of Gwi, his job as guardian would be complete.

The Scholar Who Walks the Night - Full Review

Kim Sung Yeol lives his life hiding his true identity.  For that reason, he pretends to be cold and uninterested in the people around him.  In reality, he has lived his life in guilt about the death of his first love and anger at Gui for everything that has happened since.  Because of this guilt, even though he falls in love with Yang Seon, he denies his feelings because he doesn’t think he has the right to be happy.  Lee Joon Gi is convincing as the self-refective loner who carries the burden of the world on his shoulders.  I don’t think it’s his best role, but that has more to do with the script than his acting ability.

Lee Yoo Bi as  Jo Yang Seon

Jo Yang Seon’s father is framed for treason, which causes her family to lose everything.  To protect her from an unfortunate female lineage, her father has made her dress and act like a boy since she was young.  As a boy, she runs errands for her father and helps him sell books around the city.  When a  rich, private book buyer comes to her looking for an old manuscript, she is determined to succeed.  But as she gets to know the mysterious man, she begins to believe he could be the famous “Night Scholar” who is one of her favorite book heroes.  By the time she learns Sung Yeol’s true identity, her feelings have become too  strong to make her alter her course, no matter what dangers she may face because of him.

The Scholar Who Walks the Night - Full Review

Yang Seon has lived her life with the freedom of a male, while never being able to reveal her true identity, so she understands Sung Yeol’s feelings of having to live in hiding.  She is bold and adventurous, although that often gets her into more trouble than she can actually handle.  Lee Yoo Bi is okay in this role, although the character is a bit non-descript. The romantic storyline gets moved to the back burner about halfway through and that doesn’t leave much for Yang Seon to do.  There are still some sweet moments but they are less frequent as time goes on.

Shim Chang Min as Lee Yoon

Lee Yoon is the current Crown Prince, while his grandfather sits on the throne.  Resentful of the hold Gwi has on the country and specifically the royal court, he is also determined to find a way to defeat Gwi and remove him once and for all.  Eventually he teams up with Sung Yeol to try to get rid of Gwi and bring honor back to his family.

Lee Soo Hyuk as Gwi

Gwi is the evil, greedy vampire who hopes to one day do away with royal family all together, so that the kingdom will be his alone.  He will stop at nothing to maintain his power, including creating armies of vampires just so that he can play the hero by killing them.

Kim So Eun as Choi Hye Ryung

Choi Hye Ryung is one of Gwi’s secret weapons.  Her father is an official of the royal court who is helping Gwi.  Hye Ryung looks exactly like Sung Yeol’s dead fiancé, which Gwi plans to use to his advantage when the time comes.  But in the end, Hye Ryung marries the Crown Prince to gain her own power.

Things I Liked

♥ Lee Soo Hyuk as Gwi

For Lee Soo Hyuk’s character, they kept the dialogue to a minimum, which definitely worked in his favor.  Gwi’s facials expressions and body language were a highlight of this drama, and his lines, when he had them were few and sincere.  His absolute disdain for humankind was hilariously clear in every scene.  From bored eye rolls to fits of pure rage, Gwi’s feelings and motivations were always clear, and he never had to rely on internal monologues or over-the-top acting to make his point.

♥ Gwi and Sung Yeol

Some of the later interactions between Gwi and Sung Yeol were quite profound, as they wrestled with their regrets and purposes.  Though they were sworn enemies, in the end they weren’t so different.  Both craved love and acceptance and both resented the painful destiny they had been handed.  But Sung Yeol put all that aside to serve a larger purpose, which is what makes him the hero and Gwi the villain.

♥ Vampire Saeguk

Combining any horror element with historical dramas creates an interesting platform, as evidenced by other dramas like “Kingdom”.  It worked particularly well for vampires.  The flowing costumes and dark lighting really set an appropriate mood.  In concept, I really enjoyed the premise of this drama.  Visually  the whole series was well-designed and fun to watch.

The Scholar Who Walks the Night - Full Review

Things I Didn’t Like

Lost Chemistry

Lee Joon Gi and Lee Yoo Bi had some good report in the beginning of this drama.  Their scenes together had chemistry and suspense.  But once they both came to terms with their feelings for each other, I felt like the chemistry fizzled out.  Without any conflict, their relationship just wasn’t very interesting.  And how many times can they argue about who gets to die for the other?

The Middle

For me, “The Scholar Who Walks the Night” started off pretty good.  The characters were interesting, the love story was smoldery, and the concept grabbed my interest.  And really, the last couple episodes ended things on a high note for me.  But that middle section got bogged down.  The plot became chaotic and non-sensible at times and the characters lost their clarity.  I heard that the show was forced to bring in new writers partway through, which is probably why it struggled, but struggle it did.

Who Needs a Book?

Ok, this was one of my biggest pet peeves with this storyline.  They make such a big deal over finding the hidden book with the amazing secret plan. But in the end, Sung Yeol discovers the power of Yang Seon’s blood on his own, when she uses some to save him.  And then the rest of the plan was, let’s go blow things up?  I just expected something with a little more finesse than bite the girl and blow the lair to smithereens.  The book was just a distraction with no real purpose, except to provide some temporary misunderstanding about Yang Seon being offered as a sacrifice.

The Scholar Who Walks the Night - Full Review

The Ending

So, this is another one of those dramas that seems like it’s a happy ending, but still leaves some doubt, which as I’ve said before, are not my favorite.  Gwi and Sung Yeol have their epic battle and the lair comes crashing down on top of them just as the sun rises, burying them both.  Though the crew waits outside, neither vampire comes out alive.  Fast forward a year.  Su Hyang is back to running her gibang and Ho Jin uses the backroom to sell rare books until Sung Yeol “returns”.  Yoon has taken over as king but he still mourns Hye Ryung.  In his room, he proudly displays the sword he gave to Sung Yeol before the battle, which causes the first glimmer of hope in fans who are still hoping Sung Yeol is alive and well.  Yang Seon has gone back to teaching and writing, which is nice to see.  She walks home thinking of Sung Yeol and glances around her in hopes that he will be there.  And then, as if her thoughts conjured him, Sung Yeol is there in front of her.  He apologizes for being late and she answers that she was prepared to wait another 50 years.  They kiss and then the two of them seem to vanish into thin air.  So was this a dream?  Was he really there?  I guess that is up to you to decide.

The Scholar Who Walks the Night - Full Review

Should I Watch

The Scholar Who Walks the Night

“The Scholar Who Walks the Night” is a great option for all you vampire drama fans out there.  Sexy vampires are in abundance in this interesting take on Joseon history.  The drawback is that the script can be kind of a mess at times.  If you are someone who looks for a tight plot line with no glaring holes, you should skip this one.  While the cast boasts a lot of familiar faces, with obvious acting skills, the script can be ackward and unnecessarily wordy.  Dramas have come a long way since 2015, so the effects can seem a bit cheesy given their age. But if you want a vampire adventure story with a sweet romance and some amazing sageuk costumes,  this is a good choice.  And did I mention hot vampires?     I give “The Scholar Who Walks the Night” a 7 out of 10 ramen.

Beyond Evil - Full Review

Two skilled police detectives go to extreme measures to solve a series of serial killings in a small, otherwise quiet, town.  For Lee Dong Sik, the case is very personal, as it seems to connect back to the mysterious disappearance of his twin sister 20 years ago.  Han Joo Won recently transfered from Seoul and is partnered with Lee Dong Sik, who is hot headed and impulsive.  If they are going to succeed in catching the murderer, they will have to set aside any pre-conceived ideas about the killings and examine the hearts and minds of everyone involved in the case, including their own.

Shin Ha Kyun as Lee Dong Sik

Lee Dong Sik is a police officer in the small town where he grew up.  20 years ago, he was the prime suspect in the disappearance and presumed murder of his twin sister, Lee Yu Yeon.  Although Dong Sik was released due to lack of evidence, many in the community still suspect that he was responsible.  So when a current murder case leads police back to a string of cold cases, ending with Yu Yeon’s disappearance, Dong Sik will stop at nothing to find out the truth about what happened 20 years ago.  But investigating these cases will cause him to doubt all those he is closest to, and the truth may prove just as painful as the loss of his sister.

Beyond Evil - Full Review

Lee Dong Sik is an impulsive hot-head, but he also knows the members of his community well, which gives him insight and empathy.  He has spent his life trying to solve the mystery of what happened to his sister and who was really responsible.  Shin Ha Kyun is amazing in this role.  Shifting between crazed madman and calculating investigator at the drop of a hat, his facial expressions and body language convey a wealth of emotions.  For Lee Dong Sik, the focus of his character rests in his interactions with the people around him.  Whether he is acting like the rebellious son or the sullen childhood friend, his character development revolves around his relationships.

Yeo Jin Goo as  Han Joo Won

Han Joo Won’s father is about to be named the Commissioner of the National Police Agency.  Hoping to avoid his father as much as possible, Joo Won applies for a transfer to the small Munju Police Department.  Upon his arrival, he is not thrilled when he is assigned to be Dong Sik’s partner.  Together, the two of them throw themselves into solving the murders and trying to bring the truth to light, but Joo Won still wonders whether he can trust Dong Sik.  He also wonders whether his father, who was at Munju Station around the time of the original cases, knows more than he is letting on.

Beyond Evil - Full Review

Due to his troubled relationship with his parents, Han Joo Wan is cold and socially distant.  As an outsider, he offers the audience a fresh perspective on each of the potential suspects without any personal history to cloud his judgement.  He has a firm view of right and wrong and an unwavering desire for justice.  Yeo Jin Goo has become one of my favorite actors, and I love the unique twist he brings to each of the roles he plays.  With this character, Yeo Jin Goo portrays Joo Wan’s detached personality without seeming flat and emotionless.  Whereas Dong Sik’s character development is relational, for Joo Wan it is all about personal growth and self-reflection.

Park Jung Je has been Dong Sik’s best friends since they were in school.  His overbearing mother is a local congresswoman.  Jung Je works at the Manju Police Department as an investigative lieutenant.  Although he grew up in the community, Jung Je seems to be hiding some secrets about his past.  20 years ago, Jung Je lied about being with Dong Sik the night of his sister’s disappearance so that he could be his alibi.

Kim Shin Rok as Oh Ji Hwa

Oh Ji Hwa also grew up as friends with Dong Sik and Jung Je.  She is the team leader of the Dangerous Crimes Division.  She was married to Lee Chang Jin, who is the former gangster turned CEO of JL Construction.  She is straightforward and brutely honest, but she is also a loyal friend who believes unswervingly that Dong Sik is not the one responsible for the crimes.

Choi Sung Eun as Yoo Jae Yi

Yoo Jae Yi is the owner of the local restaurant and butcher shop.  Her restaurant is the place where all of the local police gather after hours for food and meals.  She and Dong Sik share a bond because like Dong Sik’s sister, Jae Yi’s mom also disappeared without a trace and she isn’t sure whether she is still alive or another victim in the murder case.

Things I Liked

♥ Misleading Scenes

The writing on this drama is so tight and everything is done with purpose.  Using misleading scenes taken out of context as a method to enhance the twists and turns is a fascinating technique.  No character is free from doubt and suspicion, as we slowly watch each piece of the puzzle drop into place.  I loved trying to guess how a certain scene might be interpreted from a different perspective.

♥ Push and Pull Chemistry

We’ve all seen the infamous rom-com push and pull used to keep the chemistry of a lead couple alive, but I have never seen it used so well in a non-romantic relationship.  The chemistry between Dong Sik and Joo Won was so well done.  I looked forward to every minute the two shared the screen.  The energy and emotion that flowed between the two of them was palpable and very believable.

♥ OST

Wow!  The music for “Beyond Evil” was unique and fit beautifully with the cinematography to weave a spell of mystery and suspense.  This background soundtrack managed to heighten the emotions of the scenes without detracting from the overall intensity.  The jazzy songs infused with a kind of classic film noir feel was the perfect backdrop for this psychological thriller.

Things I Didn’t Like

Dating Story

Because Yu Yeon’s whole disappearance hinges around the fact that she and Jung Je were secretly dating, I would have liked to see Jung Je and Dong Sik have a heart to heart about their relationship.  Just a chance for Jung Je to confess that he may have loved her and that if life had been different, they could have been brothers-in-law, would have been a nice closure to that part of the story.

Joo Wan’s Motivation

While I feel like we got to know plenty about Joo Wan’s character and motivations through the course of the drama, I still don’t know that I understood what brought him to Munju in the first place.  He seemed convinced that Dong Sik was guilty from the beginning, so did he come to investigate that hunch?  Or was he suspicious from the start that his father had more to do with it than he let on?  Or was his placement just an attempt to get away from his dad, no matter where he ended up, and the connections were all random?  It just left me curious.

Lee Chang Jin

Lee Chang Jin’s character was probably the weakest from my perspective.  I’m not sure that he was really needed.  It seems like Congresswoman Do and Chief Han could have pulled it all off without his help.  Also, his connection as Ji Hwa’s ex-husband was a bit weird.  She seems too smart and independant to have fallen for such a con man, and there didn’t seem to be any romantic chemistry from her side.

The Ending

“Beyond Evil” ends on a high note, bringing all the storylines to a neat finish.  The “trifecta of doom”, Lee Chang Jin, Congresswoman Do, and Police Chief Han, finally turn on each other, and all of them end up serving prison time for their individual crimes.  Jung Je asks Dong Sik to arrest him, and for the first time in a very long time he isn’t forced to live with the weight of the lies he told or the crimes he committed.  He will also be serving some time in prison, but his sentence is less than the others.  Dong Sik and Joo Won finally close the long and difficult case of Yu Yeon’s disappearance, and in an emotional scene, Dong Sik says he is finally ready to accept his punishment for the wrongs he committed during the investigation.  Joo Won’s eyes fill with tears as he handcuffs him and bows with deep respect.  Unlike Joo Won’s father, Dong Sik is willing to admit his mistake and repent for his actions.  The drama ends with a short time jump of one year.  Dong Sik has served his time and been released and the gang is gathered at the Butcher Shop, as usual.  Joo Won has left the department but he joins everyone for the first time since the case ended to welcome Dong Sik back.  Everyone is happy to see him and they laugh and eat together.  The closing scene is a perfect mirror to the end of episode 1, with Dong Sik and Joo Won face to face, but the smile that once masked their distrust and anger is now full of respect and affection.  An amazing ending to an amazing drama!

Beyond Evil - Unspoiled Review

“Beyond Evil” is a smart, slow-burn  crime drama, so if any of those words scare you, you should probably just skip this one. Similar in style to other crime dramas like “Stranger”, “Beyond Evil” depends more on the psychological elements of detective work, rather than the action, so if you are looking for something fast-paced and exciting, this is not your drama.  The plot is complex and purposefully misleading at times, so you should be prepared to spend at least a little time going “Wait.  What just happened?”.  It’s all part of the ride!  The cast of “Beyond Evil” is amazing. The chemistry between the leads and strong character development were the drama’s greatest strengths.    Although the theme revolves around a series of murders, the drama manages  to be thrilling without being overly dark or violent.   I give “Beyond Evil” a 10 out of 10 ramen.

The Leads

Hello, Me! - Full Review
Hello, Me! - Full Review

Choi Kang Hee as Ban Han Ni

Ban Han Ni’s life seems to be in a downward spiral.  At 37, she is still single and just got fired from her temporary job selling food specials at the grocery store.  Just when she thinks things couldn’t get worse, her 17 year old self appears in front of her, somehow trapped in the present.  Until they can find a way to return her to her own time, Han Ni brings her younger self home and tells everyone she is her daughter.  At the same time, she also becomes friends with a handsome young man who becomes her biggest supporter.

Hello, Me! - Full Review

Ban Han Ni is shy and insecure.  Causing the death of her father when she was 17 has left a huge scar on her heart that makes her feel like she doesn’t deserve to be happy.  Her lack of confidence makes it easier for her  to just give up or grovel, rather than trying to stick up for herself. Choi Kang Hee plays this role well, accentuating her unique cuteness and quirky personality. After meeting her younger self, Han Ni begins to remember how bright and optismistic she was 20 years ago.  And slowly she learns to forgive herself for the mistakes that she made and starts to live again.

Kim Young Kwang as  Han Yoo Hyun

Han Yoo Hyun is the son of Han Ji Man, the CEO of Joa Confectionary.  Much to his father’s displeasure, he has no interest in being involved in the company, choosing to pursue trade certificates in a whole range of skills instead.  When his father gets sick of him drifting aimlessly, he kicks him out to fend for himself.  Out of desperation, Yoo Hyun applies to work in the cafeteria of his father’s company without revealing his relationship to the CEO.  But when he finds out his father’s eyes are failing and his aunt intends to take over the company and kick them out, he puts aside his own feelings to help his father save the company.

Hello, Me! - Full Review

Han Yoo Hyun has lived the spoiled life of a chaebol.  He is self-centered and arrogant.  But once he is thrown out on his own, he begins to reveal a more charming personality that is gentle and caring.  He wins over his fellow cafeteria staff and stays by Han Ni’s side when she needs him.  I love Kim Young Kwang as an actor, but I didn’t feel like this role gave him a lot to work with.  The character had some interesting potential but the storyline showed very little of that development and the romantic chemistry felt flat.

Lee Re as (Young) Ban Han Ni

The young Ban Han Ni is the 17 year old version of Han Ni.  After being involved in a traffic accident, she faints and wakes up in a hospital 20 years in the future, next to a stranger she later finds out is actually her in the future.  While waiting for a chance to go back to her own time, she hangs out with the older Han Ni and continues to pursue her dream of becoming an idol.

Eum Moon Suk as Anthony

Anthony is a famous actor who was in love with Han Ni when she was in high school, and he has never gotten over his first love.  Due to excessive plastic surgery and a recreated past  to hide his real identity, no one knows who he really is.  His last several acting projects have been flops, so he is hoping for a role that will revive his career.

Hello, Me! - Full Review

Ji Seung Hyun as Yang Do Yoon

Yang Do Yoon is Yoo Hyun’s cousin.  Raised by his single mom, he sees Yoo Hyun’s dad as a father figure.  Because of this, he has taken the role of leadership at the company.  He and his wife are expecting their first child together.  His mother has always thought she should have been the one to become president of the company and hopes to still take her place as the head of Joa Confectionary with her son at her side.

Things I Liked

♥ Addressing Bullying

Past bullying charges against idols and actors is increasingly common in Korea these days.  It’s a sensitive topic, and I respect the fact that this drama touched on it.  While I am not necessarily condoning the solution for Anthony’s behavior, it’s noteworthy that they took on the storyline at all.  Real life cases are often not as clear-cut as this fictional one, but I felt like they were careful to portray the character as remorseful and sincere in dealing with it.

♥ Han Ni Chemistry

Strangely, for a romantic comedy, the romance in this drama was pretty lackluster.  But where it lacked any romantic chemistry, it made up for in the chemistry between Han Ni the present and Han Ni the younger.  Their interactions were sweet and fun to watch.  The dance outside the company is a perfect example.  The actresses played well off each other and their affection seemed very genuine.

♥Yang Do Yoon

One of the things I really enjoyed about this drama was the heartwarming interaction between Yoo Hyun, his father, and his cousin.  They weren’t competitive and it painted a nice family picture.  So I was very disappointed when it seemed like Do Yoon had joined his mother’s efforts to oust the other men.  I breathed a sigh of relief when it became clear that it was all just an act to stop his mother from destroying the company.  I’m thankful that Do Yoon was still on the good side and that the men can continue to be a loving family.

Hello, Me! - Full Review

Things I Didn’t Like

Anthony’s Milk Problem

Bathroom humor is never my favorite, so this is almost a given at this point.  But seriously, this schtick wasn’t funny the first time, and it definitely wasn’t funny the third or fourth time!  How many times should we have to see him somehow get milk in his food?  In this case, it was way overdone.

Aunt/Nephew Romance

Another storyline that seemed kind of pointless and weird was the nephew, Seong Woo, having a crush on the younger version of his aunt.  Almost incest stories are just a little creepy, so to have one that doesn’t really have any importance to the overall plot seemed like a strange choice.  Yes, they played it off as cute and awkwardly funny, but it seemed unnecessary to me.

Plot Holes

Really the whole time travel premise of this drama is one big plot hole.  In the end, neither the grandma nor the shaman had anything to do with how the younger Han Ni got to the present or how to send her back.   And nothing she learned in the present was enough to save her dad’s life.  It’s true that the younger Han Ni’s presence taught the present Han Ni how to love herself again, which is the most important message from “Hello, Me!”,  but the methods and explanations for her time travel were messy and full of holes.

Hello, Me! - Full Review

The Ending

If we can overlook the plot holes, “Hello, Me!” ends on it’s strongest point, focusing back on the idea of self-love and forgiveness.  Anthony goes back to being Choon Shik, and pursues a love of cooking by opening a food cart, while also acting as a guardian to any kids that are being bullied in the neigborhood.  Anthony’s manager steps up to fill his shoes by becoming an actor himself, and Jung Man takes over as his representative.  Yoo Hyun’s aunt ends up in prison for her crimes and Do Yoon takes over running the company. Yoo Hyun gets promoted from cafeteria duty and goes to work in Han Ni’s department at Joa Confectionary.  Han Ni the younger figures out how to get back home after her father comes to her in a dream.  After an emotional goodbye, the two Han Ni’s walk together through a magic tunnel until the younger disappears.  The two go back to living their indivdual lives, although their experience has definitely left a positive mark, especially on the present day Han Ni.  She has finally forgiven herself for everything that happened 20 years ago and is ready to start embracing her life again.  The drama ends with Yoo Hyun giving Han Ni flowers and her returning the gift with a kiss, so their romance appears to be in full bloom in this happy ending.

Should I Watch

Hello, Me! - Unspoiled Review

“Hello, Me!” is a weird one for me.  It has goofy humor mixed with some serious and painful life lessons about regret and forgiveness.  In all honesty, I think I liked the concepts more than the actual execution, but “Hello, Me!” had it’s moments.  It is a sweet, cute story that focuses more on the relationship between the past and present main character than the romantic story.  In truth, I didn’t feel much chemistry at all between the leads.  The plot does seem to drag a bit toward the end, so if you want something fast-paced and exciting this probably isn’t it.   This drama works as a simple rom-com with a postive message.    I give “Hello, Me!” a 7 out of 10 ramen.

Lee Je Hoon as Yoo So Joon

Yoo So Joon is a successful CEO of a real estate company, who should have died in a subway accident.  But instead, his life was miraculously saved by a random stranger. After the accident, he finds that he can use the subway to travel through time.  But knowing the future isn’t always a blessing.  So Joon learns that he will die in a car accident in 2 years.  Hoping to prevent his death, he begins investigating the accident.  When he finds out that a woman also dies at the scene, he becomes curious about her and wonders if she holds the key to stopping it.  On a whim, he decides to marry her in the hopes of changing both of their futures.  Now he is determined to save both of them, but fate is hard to alter and he has twice as much to lose.

Tomorrow with You - Full Review

Yoo So Joon is emotionally detached and more caught up in the future than he is in living in the present.  In the beginning, his relationship with Ma Rin was just a means to changing his own fate.  But once she wins his heart, his whole perspective in life starts to shifts.  Every drama I watch with Lee Je Hoon makes me respect him more as an actor.  As So Joon, he is likeable and vulnerable, even as he wrestles with his natural inclination to act out of selfishness. The transformation from someone who only looks out for his own well-being to a man determined to save his marriage and the woman he loves is gradual and believable.

Shin Min Ah as  Song Ma Rin

Song Ma Rin is a washed up child actress, who is more famous for the disaster her life has become, than the one role that originally got her recognized.  Ma Rin’s mother still lives vicariously through her daughter’s short-lived success.  Dreaming of becoming a professional photographer, Ma Rin works with a friend for an online clothing company, while hoping to be discovered.  When she first meets So Joon, she believes that destiny brought them together and she is thrilled when he proposes to her quickly.  But after the wedding, So Joon’s secretive attitude and regular disappearances make her wonder if she has made a mistake in marrying him so soon.  And as she begins to learn his secrets, things only become more complicated.

Tomorrow with You - Full Review

Song Ma Rin is quirkly and outgoing.  Her brash personlity hides the deep insecurities of having lived life in the lime light as a young person who never had the skill to succeed past that one role.  Shin Min Ah has a contagious smile and energy that makes her characters come to life.  I can’t imagine a better actress to place this role.  She was able to portray Ma Rin as goofy and random, without overplaying it.  Ma Rin is the kind of character I would love to hang out with in real life.  Full of confidence and transparent about her feelings, she is also vulnerable and eager to find someone who will accept her just as she is.

Tomorrow with You - Full Review

Baek Hyun Jin as Kim Yong Jin

Kim Yong Jin is the villain for this drama.  He has a presence in both lead character’s lives as the new husband of Ma Rin’s long-time “friend” and an executive at So Joon’s company.  Out of greed, he begins skimming money from the company, but he continuously over-extends himself and ends up in deep financial trouble.  Desperate for a way out, he discovers So Joon’s secret and tries to use it against him.

Jo Han Chul as Doo Shik

Doo Shik is a mystery man who becomes friends with So Joon as a fellow time traveller.  Acting as friend and counsilor, he is the one who encourages So Joon to marry Ma Rin.  Eventually, So Joon finds out that Doo Shik is actually Ma Rin’s estranged father.  Although he wasn’t honest with him from the start, Doo Shik shares So Joon’s goal of saving both So Joon and Ma Rin from the fatal accident they have both seen in the future.

Kang Gi Doong as Kang Gi Doong

Kang Gi Doong is So Joon’s best friend.  While So Joon is the CEO of their company, Gi Doong is behind all of the day to day details that help it’s success.  In the beginning, besides Doo Shik, Gi Doong is the only person who know So Joon’s secret about being a time traveller.  Gi Doong is in love with his and So Joon’s other childhood friend, Shin Se Young, although she only has eyes for So Joon.

Things I Liked

♥ Lee Jung Eun as Mom

No one plays the eccentric, emotionally unstable mom like Lee Jung Eun.  She brings her own special flair to the role of Cha Boo Shim.  Behind every great childhood actress is a desperate “momanger” and I loved Lee Jung Eun for this part.  Cha Boo Shim’s character gives us great insight into where Ma Rin’s insecurities stem from and why, after all this time, she still hasn’t been able to put them behind her.

♥ Second Lead Couple

Kang Gi Doong is adorable and watching him pine for Shin Se Young while So Joon barely even notices is just sad.  So, I was thrilled when Se Young finally wakes up to the fact that she had a great guy who had been waiting for her the whole time.  They are a cute couple and I was glad we got to see them together in the end.

♥Relationship Development

The relationship story arc in “Tomorrow With You” is one of my favorites.  It is realistic and hard-fought from beginning to end.  Especially for So Joon, who begins their relationship as a means to an end rather than having any emotional attachment.  Neither character is perfect, and neither is their relationship, and that makes their story so much more interesting to watch.

Tomorrow with You - Full Review

Things I Didn’t Like

Why Can’t Ma Rin Time Travel?

Maybe I’m missing some famous time travel lore here, but I don’t understand why both So Joon and Doo Shik can time travel but Ma Rin can’t.  I guess she could be the catalyst that enables them, but it still seems a little weird to me.  I have heard a fan theory that it could somehow have something to do with gender, but that seems even more far-fetched to me.  But then,  I guess if you keep the rules vague, you can get away with the subtle inconsistancies.

Confusing Time Lines

Time travel stories have a tendancy to be a bit challenging at times, and “Tomorrow With You” may have been more confusing because the rules weren’t always clearly defined.  Whatever the reason, there were times when the past, future, and present blurred into a confusing mix..  In my opinion, it was never impossible to follow, but it did take some focus to remember what had already happened and what was still to come.

The Villain

This actually has nothing to do with Baek Hyun Jin’s portrayal of Kim Yong Jin.  I think he did a fine job as a villain who we could intensely dislike.  It’s just that, I think the real villains in this drama were time and destiny.  Having a human villain seemed kind of pointless, and this was further proven when Yong Jin gets caught, yet our lead couple’s situation is as dire as ever. In the grand scheme of things, the character just seemed a bit pointless.

Tomorrow with You - Full Review

The Ending

Fans couldn’t help but doubt, right up until the final minutes whether we would see a happy ending or whether we would have to watch So Joon die to protect his love.  But in the end, all was well.  Kim Yong Jin is caught by the police and punished for his crimes.  After many failed attempts, So Joon finally makes it back to the present before March 25, 2019.  Gi Doong and Se Young have become a happy couple.  Doo Shik and Ma Rin’s mom are spending time together again, which is unfortunately short-lived.  On the fated day, So Joon attempts to save Ma Rin’s life, but it is Doo Shik who comes to the rescue at the last minute and dies instead. The drama ends on a time jump to March 2022, where So Joon and Ma Rin are still together, even though they spend breakfast bickering about So Joon’s time travel and Ma Rin’s refusal to learn to cook.  So Joon leaves for work in a huff, but in the car he gets one of the e-mails Ma Rin sent to him from the past and he is reminded of how important each day is.  He calls Ma Rin to apologize and asks her on a date.  And that’s it.  Life still isn’t perfect for this quirky, stubborn couple but their love is as strong as ever.

Tomorrow with You - Unspoiled Review

“Tomorrow with You” is my perfect kind of drama.  It offers a beautiful slow-burn romance that is genuine and realistic to keep you emotionally satisfied, while also giving you an intricate time travel plot to keep your mind engaged.   But even with the mysterious time travel element, this drama is never rushed , so if you aren’t in the mood to settle in while this one takes it’s time unfolding, you should probably skip it.  While the plot is tight and well-done, the bending of time and space does get complicated, so if confusing plot scenarios frustrate you, this one isn’t a great choice.  But if you are looking for an unusal story that will keep you guessing right up until the end with an amazing lead couple, I would definitely give this one a try.  I give “Tomorrow with You” a 9 out of 10 ramen.

The Story

Move to Heaven - Full Review

“Move to Heaven” tells the story of a young autistic boy, Geu Roo, and his uncle, Sang Gu, who run a business as “trauma cleaners”.  Their job is to clear out the belongings of people who have died.  While cleaning, they look for clues as to what final wishes the person might have and try to carry out those wishes as best they can.  The drama also follows the story of Geu Roo’s relationship with the uncle he had never met, until he is appointed as Geu Roo’s “temporary” guardian following the sudden death of Geu Roo’s father .

Lee Je Hoon as Cho Sang Gu

Cho Sang Gu is released from prison to find that the older brother who had abandoned him as a child died and left him guardianship of his autistic nephew.  Initially, Sang Gu is not at all interested in carrying out his brother’s final wishes, until he finds out that guardianship also gives him ownership of the house and business.  Now all he needs to do is wait out the three month trial period and he can sell off his brother’s assets, repay his debt, and move on with his life.  But first he has to convince Geu Roo and those around him that he is dedicated to and qualified for his role as guardian.

Move to Heaven - Full Review

Cho Sang Gu has lived his life as a loner.  He channeled his anger into a “career” as an underground MMA fighter.  He is rude, arrogant, and selfish. but he has been shaped by the emotional scars and misunderstandings of his past.  As he gets to know his brother through the surroundings and people he left behind, Sang Gu begins to find healing and forgiveness.  Lee Je Hoon is such an incredible actor.  No two roles are ever the same and he is credible in all of them.  I loved seeing this prickly, rough side of him, and I felt the pain and burden that Sang Gu carried on his shoulders.  Sang Gu is messy and real, and we love him all the more for it.

Tang Jun Sang as  Han Geu Roo

Han Geu Roo is a 20 year old man with Aspergers syndrome.  Life hasn’t been easy for him, but his father has always been there to root for and support him.  When his father suddenly dies, he is left alone with an uncle he has never met before and a business only he can run.  As he teaches Sang Gu the ropes of their company “Move to Heaven”, he also learns how to cope with life now that his father is gone.  Luckily the lessons he learned from his father while he was alive continue to guide him through the most difficult situations.  And although his uncle is rough around the edges, Geu Roo begins to see other positive qualities that are hidden under the surface.

Move to Heaven - Full Review

Due to his Aspergers, Han Geu Roo faces plenty of challenges in his life.  But he is not a character that the audience should find lacking or pitiful.  He handles every situation with a single-minded determination and a logical attitude that leaves no room for anything but success.  What I loved about Geu Roo’s character is that, although it was difficult, he found ways to understand the thoughts and feelings of his clients.  From my limited experience, Tang Jun Sang did a remarkable job in this role, and played Geu Ru’s character sincerely, without overplaying his struggles.

Hong Seung Hee as Yoon Na Mu

Yoon Na Mu has been Geu Roo’s next door neighbor and best friend for years.  She also secretly has a crush on him.  During Sang Gu’s probationary period as guardian, she is asked to keep a close eye on the situation to make sure that Geu Roo is happy and safe.  She volunteers to work for Move to Heaven with Sang Gu and Geu Roo so she can watch over them more closely.

Jung Ae Yun as Madame Jeong

Madame Jeong is the “villain” of this drama.  She runs an illegal fighting ring and has been blackmailing Sang Gu to keep him fighting for her for years.  She is heartless and greedy.  Madame Jeong appears to have no conscience, even though her actions have caused Sang Gu to lose the student he loved like a brother and serve time in prison.

Things I Liked

♥ Social Commentary

“Move to Heaven” does a great job of bringing up important social issue without ever sounding preachy.  From homophobia to neglect of the elderly, and plenty in between, “Move to Heaven” gently reminds us that we all have scars and weaknesses. And in a society where self-righteous greed is prevelant, it never hurts to be kind.  It also reminds us that kindness doesn’t have to end with life;  if we listen carefully, the dead can still speak.

♥ Based on a True Story

Knowing that this series is based off of a non-fiction essay called “Ddeonan Hooe Namgyeojin Geotdeul” by Kim Shae-Byeol gives me a special joy.  This is not just some idealized story that sounds sweet on tv.  There is really a man who worked as a “trauma cleaner” and brought their stories into one place for others to enjoy and learn from.  What an amazing testimony of human kindness!

♥Interesting Sub-Plots

One of the strengths of this drama is the diverse sub-plots that venture into many different topics and genre.  While the main story is great on it’s own, the lessons learned through the people they help are also valuable and interesting. Each story gives us food for thought and each character adds their own unique richness to the drama as a whole.

Things I Didn’t Like

Season 2?

This drama definitely opened the door for a season 2 in the final scenes, even though nothing has been confirmed by Netflix yet.  While no existing storylines left us hanging for an ending, introducing a new character in the last minutes was an interesting teaser.  Without a second season, this scene could just be a sign that life and work go on, but it left me curious enough to hope for a chance to see what happens next.

Romance??

So, I admit this is another thing I complain about on the regular, but “Move to Heaven” teased us with not just one but two potential romances and even hinted at a love triangle!  All, while not following through on a single one.  I think I earned the right to whine a little.  IF there is a season 2, it seems like these relationships could make up the foundation for the sequel’s main storylines.

Na Mu’s Mom

I’m sure for the Aspergers community, Na Mu’s mom represents a whole group of people who never try to understand or accept them as they are, but I found her very unlikeable.  While Na Mu had such a sincere relationship with Geu Roo, it was difficult to watch her mother devalue and criticize him.  I’m sure many people like her exist in real life, but it didn’t make her character any less distasteful.

Move to Heaven - Full Review

The Ending

Because “Move to Heaven” finished each sub-plot as the series went along, there isn’t a lot to break down for the ending.  For our leads, I think it was a happy ending.  Sang Gu is forced to fight for Madame Jeong again.  Geu Roo and Na Mu find out about it and get the police involved.  While the raid errupts into chaos, they sneak an injured Sang Gu out the back door.  Lawyer Oh meets with Sang Gu and tells him that he doesn’t think Sang Gu is qualified to act as Geu Roo’s guardian and the illegal fighting is just one example of why.  Defeated, Sang Gu turns to leave, but Lawyer Oh continues that his opinion isn’t really that important.  Geu Roo wants Sang Gu to continue on in his role, so he will finish the paperwork to make it official.  The final scene shows Geu Ru in front of the Move to Heaven van when a young woman approaches him.  She says that she would like to hire them and the client is herself.  Geu Roo seems flustered and interested in her, but also confused.  And that’s a wrap.  So our Move to Heaven team are still together, with Na Mu finally telling her parents that she intends to work with them full-time, and ready to take on their next job.

Should I Watch

Move to Heaven - Unspoiled Review

“Move to Heaven is slow paced and emotional.  It tells the stories of those who can no longer speak for themselves in a way that is respectful and not overdone.  Due to the nature of their job as trauma cleaners, many of the stories are bittersweet.  This isn’t a happy, light drama and it doesn’t provide an intense or exciting storyline.  It’s strength lies in the quiet unfolding of beautiful stories that will tug at your heart.  This show is much more episodic than the average kdrama, focusing on various sub-plots more than the main characters. This gave the drama as a whole a balanced variety of themes while still allowing us to get to know the leads through their reactions to each story. I have heard mixed reviews among the Aspergers community about the  accuracy of the main characters portrayal, so if you are looking at it as a way to learn more about this condition, this may not be the best source. If you are looking for a drama that has great writing, an amazing cast, and strong character development that will touch your heart, I definitely recommend “Move to Heaven”.  I give “Move to Heaven” an 9 out of 10 ramen.

King2Hearts - Full Review

When peace between North and South Korea is the main goal, a royal wedding seems to be the best method of bringing them together.  But can a carefree prince and a military-trained sniper put aside their differences for the common good of both their countries?  Together, they will have to fight against a powerful and influential enemy who is more interested in his own financial stability then the peace of two warring nations.

Lee Seung Gi as Prince Lee Jae Ha

Prince Lee Jae Ha is well-known as the royal trouble-maker and has no interest in his brother’s position as King.  But royal responsibility can’t be avoided forever.  He finds himself participating in a joint military competition, known as the WCO, with a group of North Korean soldiers. Following the competition, the King arranges a royal engagement with a female trainer for the elite special forces.  When his brother is suddenly murdered, Jae Ha is suddenly thrown into the position he never wanted.  Now as King, he will continue his brother’s legacy by seeking peace with North Korea, through the marriage his brother arranged.  And over time, what started as a political alliance will become the great love his brother hoped he would find.

King2Hearts - Full Review

Lee Jae Ha is brash, reckless, and a known playboy, but life as a royal has not been as easy as he tries to make it seem.  His position has left him distrustful of the motives of those around him.  As the drama progresses, we watch Jae Ha mature and grow as he gains a support system of people he can rely on.  All of the energy he once put into living a carefree lifestyle becomes the determination he uses to become a strong and dependable leader and to protect those he loves and the Korean people as a whole.  Lee Seung Gi is a wonderful actor, and this role does not disappoint.  He portrays the progression of Jae Ha’s character, from lazy drifter to confident leader with appealing sincerity.

Ha Ji Won as Kim Hang Ah

Kim Hang Ah has risen through the ranks as a soldier of the North Korean Elite Forces.  But what she really wants is to find love, get married, and settle down.  But when her father sets up an arranged marriage between her and the handsome prince of South Korea, she isn’t sure what to think.  She is attracted to him but it’s impossible to tell how he really feels about her.  But for the sake of her father and her country, she packs up and moves to South Korea to begin training as a princess.  After the King is murdered, and her intended takes his place on the throne, she decides to throw caution to the wind and devote herself to her new job as the future Queen.

King2Hearts - Full Review

Kim Hang Ah is a wonderfully complex character from the very beginning.  A highly trained soldier with nerves of steel when life and death are on the line, she is innocent and naive in terms of men and relationships.  Her innocence allows her to wear her heart on her sleeve for everyone to see. This proves to be an advantage in the end, because Jae Ha can easily read her true feelings and that allows him to trust her and open his heart to her.  Ha Ji Won is perfectly suited to this kind of role as a tough warrior with a sensitive and compassionate heart.  Her eyes can go from steely and determined to soft and vulnerable in a matter of seconds and her facial expressions convey a depth of feelings.

Jo Jung Suk as Eun Shi Kyung

Eun Shi Kyung is a military officer who leads South Korea’s team at the WCO.  His father is the Royal Chief Secretary who is one of the King’s most trusted advisors.  After the Princess’ accident, Shi Kyung is assigned as her private bodyguard.  While spending time with the princess, Shi Kyung falls in love with her and helps her heal from the trauma of her accident and her brother’s death.

Lee Jae Shin is the independant and free-spirited princess who is also the lead singer of a rock band.  When she shows up without warning to the scene of her brother’s murder, the villains try to kill her too, but she jumps from the cliff to avoid it.  The fall leads to her being paralysed as well as suffering from PTSD.  Thanks to her friendship with Shi Kyung, she is able to regain her memory and work hard on her physical rehabilitation.

Things I Liked

♥ Royalty as People

Rather than relying on the overly dramatic royal traits that many dramas use, “King2Hearts” chose to make their royals much more down to earth and realistic.  Before their deaths, the King and Queen are shown as a loving and well-grounded couple.  And the Queen mother, while initially unsure about her son marrying a North Korean sniper, eventually becomes one of her staunchest supporters.  She doesn’t throw a tantrum or resort to sneaky and underhanded methods to get rid of her, which tends to be the norm for kdrama Queen Mothers.  This is the kind of royal family that feels like real people and I really appreciated the balanced portrayal of them.

♥ Cute with Substance

Jae Ha and Hang Ah have a great chemistry and I love the way their relationship develops over time.  “King2Hearts” manages to show us a sweet side to this couple without making it so cutesy that it loses the the substance  and severity of the other storylines.  The balance lends to the consistancy of the drama as a whole and still gives us a beautiful love story.

♥Creepy Villains

The villains in this drama are strangely terrifying.  They are maniacal in the most calm and unsettling way imaginable.  I often find myself feeling disgust or extreme dislike for kdrama villains, but these villains instilled fear in me.  I never felt like they overacted or pushed things too far.  And maybe it was that firm control that gave them their sharp edge.  All I know is they left an impression on me that felt more real than drama.

King2Hearts - Full Review

Things I Didn’t Like

Foreign Cast

Every once in a while, a kdrama will use English speakers who don’t seem to have much acting experience, and I try not to be too critical.  But “King2Hearts” isn’t just one or two actors.  There is a large cast of non-Korean actors whose acting distracts from the overall story and was just uncomfortable to watch.  I’m sure it’s hard to find actors in Korea to fill these roles, but I wish they would at least keep their speaking to a minimum.

I Am King

We kind of lose sight of John Mayer in the end.  It’s almost like his character wasn’t that important, even though he drove the story up until the last episode.  The villains go on without him, as if they never really needed him in the first place.  That definitely serves him right but makes it seem like he wasn’t such a strong enemy in the first place.  And I really would have loved to hear Jae Ha finally get to say “No.  Actually, I am King”. After reminding us of that line so many times, it seems like a missed opportunity.

Shi Kyung’s Death

Ok, I admit it.  I hate when great supporting characters die.  But this one was another heart-breaker for me.  After all he had done for the royal family, I thought he would get his happily ever after with the princess.  Up until the very end, I kept hoping his death was some ploy to throw off the villains. I also would have like to see more of Jae Ha’s reaction to losing his closest friend and ally.  The 10 seconds spent discussing Shi Kyung’s inability to hold alcohol didn’t seem like enough.  Everybody loves Jo Jung Suk, so I can’t be the only one who felt this way.

King2Hearts - Full Review

The Ending

“King2Hearts” brings everything to a nice closure with mostly happy endings.  The exception, of course, is the death of Shi Kyung, and the Princess’ loneliness because of it.  The final episode gives us a great good vs. evil showdown, where the good guys win, and the bad guys mostly get what they deserve. Although there is always a feeling that John Mayer will still get out of it somehow, which makes it a bit less satisfying.  War is averted and our happy couple finally get married.  Our final scenes show a 4 year time jump.  It’s time for the WCO again and the former team is in Seoul to help train the new group.  They take a minute out of their happy reunion to pay tribute to Shi Kyung.  Meanwhile Jae Shin also remembers him, while imaging the 2 of them back up at the wall talking.  She is still in the wheelchair, but both her mind and body seem to be healing slowly.  Jae Ha and Hang Ah, together with their adorable son, face the press, smiling for the cameras.  Until their toddler makes the mistake of using North Korean pronunciation while calling his mother.  The press go crazy but the King and Queen Mother laugh it off lovingly. Jae Ha and Hang Ah stand strong and united in the face of political opposition and seem to live happily ever after.

King2Hearts - Full Review

Should I Watch

King2Hearts - Unspoiled Review

I went into this drama expecting a sweet, fluffy romance, and was shocked to find it full of action and political drama.  For me,”King2Hearts” was really a pleasant surprise all the way around.  The plot concept is unique and interesting and the villains are truly terrifying.  If you are looking for something light and fun, this wouldn’t be at the top of my list.  And since the drama takes place in a hypothetical political world, fans looking for realistic storylines may find “King2Hearts” too much of a stretch.   But it did offer great character development and an exciting story, full of love and intrigue.  The star-studded cast is full of lots of familiar faces.  I give “King2Hearts” an 8 out of 10 ramen.

Song Joong Ki as Vincenzo Cassano

Vincenzo Cassano is a Korean who was adopted by a mafia boss and emigrated to Italy.  But after his adopted father is killed, Vincenzo’s brother goes after him.  Fleeing Italy, he returns to his homeland to retrieve a buried treasure of gold that is in a hidden basement of a retail building.  Upon his arrival, he finds out that the building has been slated for demolition by Babel Corporation, who hopes to use the property to build a skyscraper for the company. Joining forces with the store owners of Geumga Plaza, Vincenzo is hoping to block the demolition, at least long enough to remove the gold.  Luckily he finds a reliable partner in Hong Cha Young, a lawyer with an office in the same building.  As Vincenzo becomes invested in the lives of the those at Geumga Plaza, he learns that the only thing more important than revenge is protecting the people you love.

Vincenzo - Full Review

Vincenzo is an intelligent, cold-blooded mobster who can out-think even the most depraved mind.  But his time at Geumga Plaza also reveals another side of him as a caring and charismatic leader who inspires people to trust him, even when the odds seem against them.  Song Joong Ki did a fabulous job of portraying the duality and complexity of this character.  Like the people of Geumga Plaza, I found myself knowing I should disapprove of the brutality and violence, and yet won over by his boyish charm.  It would have been easy to overplay this role, but Song Joong Ki managed to strike a perfect balance that was neither too good or too evil.

Jeon Yeo Bin as Hong Cha Young

Hong Cha Young was working as a lawyer for Woosang Law Firm until her father, who had a private law practice, is killed by Babel for defending Geumga Plaza.  Cha Young resigns her position with Woosang and takes over at her father’s office in Geumga.  Vincenzo becomes her advisor as they work together in t, aking down Babel.  As the pair work side by side, their friendship grows into something deeper, even though their focus needs to stay on the legal battle.

Vincenzo - Full Review

Hong Cha Young is a cut throat lawyer who will do anything to win, but she refuses to resort to violence.  Though she cares for the people at Geumga Plaza and wants to help them, her true motivation in taking their case is revenge for the death of her father.  She is quick on her feet and unafraid to face any challenge head on.  Jeon Yeo Bin did a great job in this role and I especially enjoyed the scenes of her and Song Joong Ki together.  Their natural chemistry was obvious and fun to watch.

Jang Jun Woo is working as a lawyer for Woosang, although he is actually the CEO of Babel Corporation.  By hiding in the background, Jun Woo has someone else to take the fall if things go badly for them.  Jun Woo is the key villain with a dark past full of psychopathic episodes that his rich father covered up.

Kim Yeo Jin as Choi Myung Hee

Choi Myung Hee is a lawyer at Woosang Law Firm and becomes the primary advisor for Jang Jun Woo and Babel Corporation.  She is ruthless and greedy, and will stop at nothing to succeed, even taking out those who are closest to her.  Lawyer Choi is bold and unconventional and has been working in the political sphere long enough to have some very powerful connections.

Kwak Dong Yeon as Jang Han Seo

Jang Han Seo is Jun Woo’s younger half brother and the puppet CEO of Babel.  Knowing what Jun Woo is truly capable of, including killing their father to take over the company, Han Seo is terrified of doing anything that will upset him.  Eventually he joins forces with Vincenzo to work against Babel and his brother.

Things I Liked

♥ Taec Yeon

Taec Yeon was a highlight for me in this drama.  The transformation from bumbling law clerk to diablic villain was seamless and believable.  From  facial expressions to body language, he portrayed the role perfectly.  And the random English expressions thrown in made me chuckle every time!  I don’t think I could love a villain more!!

♥ Geumga Plaza

One of the strengths of this drama is a huge and talented cast.  This is showcased at Geumga Plaza, where a whole squad of interesting characters work and interact.  With so many strong cast members, none of them get a huge storyline, but each one is memorable and makes the most of the time they have.

♥Vincenzo’s Mom

I really enjoyed the storyline with Vincenzo and his mom.  First of all, in a story full of villains, it’s nice to have a redemption story.  And second, it gives great insight into Vincenzo’s more sensitive and compassionate side.  An added bonus is that it gives him and Cha Young a common bond to further solidify their connection.  Hong Yoo Chan is a wonderful actress and I loved her in this role.

Things I Didn’t Like

Violence is Suddenly Ok?

So, I get the end game for this drama was always revenge, and I was glad to see the villains get exactly what they deserved.  But in the beginning, Cha Young made Vincenzo promise not to kill anyone, and Vincenzo spent the whole show finding more creative ways to beat their opponents.  All the while, his new friends were helping to heal some of the wounds caused by his mother and mafia life.  It seemed like that time had made him a better, happier person, and then suddenly he was back to gruesome murder and extreme violence.  For me, it felt like a major shift in direction that didn’t fit the character we had come to know.

Birds and Surgeons

“Vincenzo” really embraced the whole “go big or go home” approach to drama and for the most part, I loved it.  But there were a few points where even my suspended disbelief was pushed to the limits.  First of all, the birds on the roof.  I fully expected them to come back later and show how Cha Young or someone had actually chased the birds and they just let Vincenzo think the birds did it on their own. It just seemed a little silly to me.  And second, I got used to the marvel comic concept where all the Geumga Plaza owners had some special talent.  So, they are all some form of amazing athlete or fighter that just happens to be able to take on the bad guys.  But then Seok Do announces that not only is he a mediocre neighborhood boss but he used to be a surgical nurse who can save Cheol Wook, the pawn shop owner.  Through the many silly stunts and gags, these two incidents are just examples of how, at times,  it pushed the scale into the ridiculous for me.

What About the Gold??

For Vincenzo, this all started because of the buried gold.  But in the end, the gold is just left hiding at Cha Young’s house.  After going through all the work of smuggling it out of the basement, no one is using it for anything.  It just seems rather anti-climatic that it’s only use is a very uncomfortable bed.

The Ending

There is a lot that happens in the last couple episodes of “Vincenzo” but the breakdown is surprisingly easy.  Those who fought against him are all dead, and those that helped him have gone back to doing what they did before.  Jun Woo, Myung Hee, Seung Hyuk, and several of their lackeys have all been killed, in unique and personalized ways.  Unfortunately, Han Seo is also collateral damage, which was unfortunate.  I would have liked to see him blossom under the positive attention he could get from Vincenzo and the crew.  The gang at Geumga Plaza are back in their shops, although their connection to each other is stronger now than when it all started.  And Young Woon and Ki Seok are both back to working as agents.  So what about our leads?  Well, Vincenzo has bought a small island off of Malta, but continues to stay in touch with Cha Young through anonymous postcards.  And Cha Young is still working out of her father’s office.  But our final scene sees Vincenzo back in Korea for the evening on business.  He and Cha Young meet and share a kiss, and he tells her that he has a room for her on his island, whenever she wants to come.  It’s the kind of inconclusive love story that makes me a bit frustrated, but I guess you can consider it a happy ending.  Neither of the leads are dead, so that is always a plus!

Should I Watch

Vincenzo - Unspoiled Review

“Vincenzo” follows the common kdrama trend of trying to give fans a multi-genre experience.  Complete with crime, dark comedy, political corruption, revenge, and just a touch of romance, it is popular with a whole range of viewers.  Unfortunately, at times this wide range of variety is also it’s downfall, as the story swings suddenly from violent murder to silly humor.  If you love your crime dramas intense and realistic, you may find these attempts to lighten the mood irritating.  By contrast, if you are put off by too much darkness and violence, “Vincenzo” does get pretty intense at points, especially in the last few episodes.  Also, romance takes a back seat to the other genres in this drama, so if you are looking for a full-blown love story, you could be disappointed.    But for the majority of fans who aren’t devoted to a single genre or style, there is plenty to enjoy about this drama.  “Vincenzo” has an amazing cast with great chemistry, the story is exciting and full of twists and turns, and the idea of adding the mafia into the Korean law and political scene is unique and fascinating.   I give “Vincenzo” a 9 out of 10 ramen.

She Would Never Know - Full Review

Won Jin Ah as Yoon Song Ah

Yoon Song Ah loves her job as a marketer for KLAR Cosmetics and dreams of having her own brand one day.  Her life has revolved around work and her company.  But secretly she is also dating her director.  Until the young man she is training finds out that not only is she dating, but her boyfriend is actually engaged to the Chairman’s daughter.  Hyun Seung forces Song Ah to confront the situation and promises to pretend to be her new boyfriend as a way of getting revenge and moving on.  Of course, in the midst of this “fake” relationship, Song Ah develops real feelings for her apprentice and the two begin dating, also in secret.  Or so they think!

She Would Never Know - Full Review

Yoon Song Ah is driven and mature.  She has a complicated relationship with her mother due to the death of her father when she was young, which makes her emotionally guarded.  Won Jin Ah is a quirky and charming actress, but I didn’t love her in this role.  The character felt flat and there seemed to be a lack of chemistry on her part.  It was hard to develop any kind of emotional connection to Song Ah because there wasn’t a lot of depth to her character.

Rowoon as Chae Hyun Seung

Chae Hyun Seung met Song Ah at a job fair at his university, and chose to work at KLAR because he was instantly intrigued by her.  Although he is only 1 year younger than her, Song Ah has never considered him romantically because she is his superior at work.  When Hyun Seung finds out Song Ah is in a relationship with their director, he is disappointed.  But after learning the whole truth about the director’s engagement, Hyun Seung decides to use the situation as a way to spend more time with Song Ah, and hopefully finally get her attention.

She Would Never Know - Full Review

Chae Hyun Seung is a sweet and optimistic character, even if that makes him a bit naive at times. It also makes him honest and straight-forward in a way that is admirable and endearing.   Some felt that his actions toward Song Ah felt stalkerish and opportunistic, which I guess could be true.  His determination to take care of her does go above and beyond at times, even to his own detriment.  But once Song Ah makes it clear that his actions are inappropriate and make her uncomfortable, Hyun Seung takes a step back and alters his behavior.  Seeing Rowoon take on a more mature role was really fun and I thought he handled it well.  You can see how he has grown as an actor and I found the role to be genuine and charismatic.

Lee Joo Bin as Lee Hyo Joo

Lee Hyo Joo has had an unrequited crush on Jae Shin since they were young.  When he refused to return her feelings, she tries to kill herself in a desperate attempt to hold on to him.  This almost leads to their marriage, until Lee Jae Shin calls off the wedding just weeks before the ceremony.  Now Hyo Joo must learn to live life without the one thing she wanted most.

Lee Kyu Han as Lee Jae Woon

Lee Jae Woon is the president of KLAR cosmetics, but his grandfather holds all the real control.  With Jae Shin’s help, he hopes to prove himself as a strong leader and good business man.  One day he meets a beautiful woman in one of his stores and falls instantly in love.  Little does he know, the mystery woman is Hyun Seung’s sister!

Things I Liked

♥ The Sisters

To be honest, there were points where the main storyline of this drama dragged a bit and the secondary plots became more interesting.  Hyun Seung’s sisters, Ji Seung and Yun Seung, are great characters.  They are smart and complex, and they help drive the episodes when it is needed.  Both actresses did an amazing job of creating characters that the audience could understand and appreciate, even with limited screen time.

♥ Park So Yi as Kang Ha Eun

This little actress is one precocious power house.  I loved all her scenes with Rowoon, her mom, and her aunt.  These kinds of characters can get unrealistic in a hurry if the concept is pushed too far, but in the case of Ha Eun, I felt her elemetary school insecurities mixed into the adult conversations. Her sense of timing and depth of emotion are well beyond her years, and I look forward to seeing her in many  more dramas in the future.

♥Turning the Tables

Song Ah’s admission that she has never had to pursue a guy she was interested in was a bit arrogant for me.  So I was thrilled when she came home from her work abroad and suddenly had to be the one to win Hyun Seung back.  Hyun Seung deserved to be shown some appreciation after all he had gone through for her, and I liked that they finally turned the tables in their relationship.

She Would Never Know - Full Review

Things I Didn’t Like

Ha Eun Never Ages

Okay, this may seem a bit petty but at that age, after three years, Ha Eun would have aged quite a bit.  I love this young actress and so a part of me was glad they didn’t change her out. But still, it is not at all realistic to think she would look the same after that amount of time.  Even Song Ah had a longer, more mature, hair style.  But for Ha Eun to look exactly the same after all that time just isn’t realistic.

More Information, Please

Because this drama makes such great use of their secondary roles, there are a few stories that I would have liked to see more of.  For Ji Seung, I would have liked a little more backstory.  What exactly happened with her ex-fiance, that led to her years of solitiude.  We see a bit, but I didn’t get the feeling I really understood how she got to the place she did.  The opposite is true for Yun Seung’s husband, Woo Hyeon.  We get plenty of backstory, so that we become invested in it and then we never get any closure.  Does he finally admit his feelings for Chef Ryu?  Does he at least admit that maybe he is “like him” after all?  There was a lot more they could have explored with these characters and I found myself wanting more.

Serious Problems

Kdramas often have characters whose pyschological problems border on the extreme, but I found the characters of both Hyo Joo and Song Ah’s mother, Wol Sun, to be a bit disturbing in their severity.  These women have some very serious issues that need to be dealt with more than just by self-reflection.  There is a fortune’s worth of therapy in these two roles.

She Would Never Know - Full Review

The Ending

“She Would Never Know” does an okay job wrapping up the stories.  Ji Sueng and Jae Woon are in the process of getting married, although they still have some communication issues to work through.  Yun Seung and Woo Hyeon, in contrast are on their way out of their marriage.  Ha Eun isn’t taking it well, but the couple have promised to work together to make it as smooth as they can for her. Hyo Joo and Jae Shin are both learning to stand on their own.  They were even able to meet and have a friendly conversation with no lingering attachments.  Song Ah’s mother is spending time with friends and focusing on her own life, instead of Song Ah’s .  And after working hard to convince Hyun Seung that she still loved him, Song Ah pops the question while randomly standing in a crosswalk.  The series ends with the happy couple posing for wedding photos.

She Would Never Know - Full Review

Should I Watch

She Would Never Know - Unspoiled Review

“She Would Never Know’ is a typical office romance.  The slow-paced love story makes it feel a bit more “real life”, but there isn’t anything distinctly unique about the plot.  Rowoon fans may be happy to see him in a more mature role, although his character still has the kind of dreamy optimism he portrays so well.  If you are looking for a more melodramatic love story this one may be a good choice.  The main storyline drags a bit at times, but the supporting cast does a nice job of taking up the slack.   I give “She Would Never Know” a 7 out of 10 ramen.
