The Story

Bossam: Steal the Fate - Full Review

Bossam was the Joseon practice of kidnapping young widows, either by choice or force, for the purpose of remarriage.  Ba Woo is a single dad struggling to make enough money to raise his family.  When he is approached with an opportunity to make a large sum of money performing a bossam, he can’t resist.  But when he kidnaps the wrong widow, things take a turn for the worst.  Especially when he finds out that the widow is actually the Joseon princess and the daughter and daughter-in-law of his worst enemies.  As Ba Woo and the princess begin piecing together the ill-fated histories of their families, they find the truth may effect not just them but the country as a whole.

Jung Il Woo as Ba Woo

When Ba Woo was young, his father was executed for treason, leaving him alone to take care of his mother and sister. He hid the women away where they would be safe and lived apart from them, doing odd jobs to make ends meet.  Ba Woo has raised his son alone since his wife ran away in the middle of the night and abandoned them.  When he is pressured into taking on a well-paying job as a bossam he plans to do it once and walk away.  But when he ends up kidnapping the princess by mistake and his son takes a liking to her as his new mom, things get complicated in a hurry.  As he learns about her struggles, he tries to help her, out of pity.  And that pity grows into something deeper as he spends time with her.  When they both become targets in the Left State Councillor’s plans to overthrow the King and place the official’s nephew on the throne, they work together to find a solution that will save all of their lives and protect the welfare of the country as a whole.

Bossam: Steal the Fate - Full Review

Ba Woo has seen the worst in palace politics and only wants to live quietly, keeping his family safe.  He has a strong sense of responsibility.  But when he is given the opportunity to get revenge on those who destroyed his family, he jumps at the chance.  The situation is more difficult due to his feelings for Hwa In and her father’s role in his past.  Jung Il Woo is great in this role as the troubled rogue with the heart and background of a gentleman.  He has the ability to convey a quiet authority that is sincere and believable.  I also enjoyed him as the single father who tends to error on the side of tough love, even though his devotion to his son is unquestionable.  Their interactions were heartwarming and sweet.

,Kwon Yu Ri as Soo Kyung/ Princess Hwa In

Princess Hwa In has had a difficult life.  First, her father gave her hand in marriage to the brother of the man she actually loved, then her groom killed himself the day before the wedding, leaving her as a virgin widow left to serve in her father-in-law’s household.  Pursing her own happiness is a dream she only hopes for.  Until one day, she is kidnapped by a handsome stranger and falls in love with his adorable son.  But this event only serves to kick off a new chain of bad luck, as her father and father-in-law declare her dead and continue to use her as a pawn in their own struggle against each other for power.  Fighting side by side with the new family she has formed, the princess will try to find the best way to keep the peace and save the lives of those she cares about.

Bossam: Steal the Fate - Full Review

Hwa In is strong and independant.  Even though she has never had to take care of herself, she tries her best to adjust to life as a commoner.  Her determination to thrive in such a difficult situation without self-pity or whining, makes her a very likeable character.  Kwon Yu Ri has really grown as an actress and I enjoyed her performance in this role.  The princess is soft spoken and graceful without seeming weak, and Kwon Yu Ri’s acting really brought this character to life.

Shin Hyun Soo as Lee Dae Yeop

Lee Dae Yeop has been raised as the youngest son of the Left State Councillor, Lee Yi Cheom.  In truth, he is Lee Yi Cheom’s nephew and the illegitimate son of the deceased prince, Prince Imhae.  He is also the first love of princess Hwa In.  He and the princess grew up together and fell in love, but Lee Yi Cheom blocked the marriage and married her to his older son instead.  Lee Dae Yeop continues to love and protect Hwa In, hoping one day they can be together.

Lee Joon Hyuk as Chun Bae

Chun Bae is Ba Woo’s best friend and “business” partner.  They have lived and travelled together for years and have become a family.  Even when Chun Bae is captured and held prisoner, he refuses to betray Ba Woo and believes he will eventually come to save him.  Chun Bae falls in love with princess Hwa In’s personal servant, Court Lady Jo.

Shin Dong Mi as Court Lady Jo

Court Lady Jo has raised princess Hwa In since she was an infant and loves her like her own child.  After the kidnapping, the two are separated, and Court Lady Jo believes the princess is dead.  But eventually Chun Bae brings them back together, and Court Lady Jo joins the makeshift family, with Ba Woo and Hwa In. Along the way, she develops feelings for the rough and clumsy Chun Bae.

Things I Liked

♥ Bossam Concept

Even though it was only relevant for the first couple episodes, I found the idea of bossaming to be really interesting.  It’s great when we can get a good history lesson mixed in with our drama, and I felt like I learned something new by watching “Bossam: Steal the Fate”.  Don’t get me wrong; I’m not supporting the idea of kidnapping poor unsuspecting widows, but the practice did exist and that is fascinating.  Good on the writers for finding a unique niche for this series.

♥ Family and Forgiveness

This drama has some wonderful messages about what it means to be a family.  Fathers who use their children for their own political means show us that blood is no guarantee of good parenting, while others step in to love and protect those with no biological relationship.  Mothers who are forced by society to hide quietly in the background, continue to sacrifice for their children from afar.  And through it all, these children respect and forgive because they are family.  All of these connections and more serve to remind us that families are about more than blood and even in families, forgiveness is always a choice.

♥ Music

“Bossam: Steal the Fate” did an amazing job with their music selection.  A unique blend of traditional music and instruments created  the perfect setting for this story.  It was easy to get swept away in the atsmosphere that was created by background music and sounds.

Things I Didn’t Like

Hwa In’s Husband

There seemed to be more to the story of Hwa In’s husband, and I was disappointed that we didn’t learn anything new.  Why did he kill himself the night before the wedding?  I was sure that his father actually killed him for some political reason, but I guess not.  And why did Lee Yi Cheom push his older son to marry the princess instead of Dae Yeop?  There seems to be several possible reasons for it, but I would have liked an explanation within the story.

No Kiss

Plenty of dramas leave us with just a hint of romance and no kiss, but those dramas are usually more crime or law centered.  This drama is supposed to be a romance.  And the chemistry between the leads was obvious from the beginning.  Those steamy, longing gazes were a great warm. up but I would have enjoyed at least one beautiful kiss.  Even Court Lady Jo and Chun Bae get a little smooching.  That hardly seems fair!

Prince Neungyang

It’s common in historical dramas to bring a new guy in at the very end to become King, while our hero rides into the sunset to enjoy his freedom.  But it would be nice to know that he left the country in good hands, at least.  Where did Prince Neungyang even come from?  I was somehow under the impression that all potential princes had been properly dispensed with.  But surprise!  Here comes a prince out of nowhere.  Will he be a decent and honest ruler or is he just another face in the long line of corrupt leaders? We do get to see him promise to clean up the mess the former King left behind and reinstate those who were falsely accused, so we know he is at least off to a good start.  But still,  enquiring minds want more information!

The Ending

“Bossam: Steal the Fate” offers us a happy ending for our fabulous couple, but leaves a lot of outcomes vague.  Unfortunately the one character who’s ending was clear is Dae Yeop.  In the end, his love and loyalty to his uncle cost him his life.  After heartlessly killing his nephew, Lee Yi Cheom goes back home, where Ba Woo and the soldiers come to arrest him.  Ba Woo resists the urge to kill him on the spot, out of respect for his departed friend, Dae Yeop.  Court Lady Kim is arrested by Kim Ja Jeom, and he is finally out from under her evil thumb.  The rebellion is successful in placing Prince Neungyang on the throne.  Commander Jung Yeong is killed, defending the King until the very end.  King Gwanghae is dethroned. Although we don’t find out any more about his fate, history tells us he was sent into exile after the rebellion.  Ba Woo makes sure that Soo Kyung’s mother, the Royal Consort, is safely hidden away somewhere.  Soo Kyung, convinced that she has no future as the daughter of a deposed king, prepares to become a nun while the monk, Court Lady Jo and Chun Bae sadly look on.  But in a beautiful full-circle moment, Ba Woo shows up, complete with mask and sack, to bossam his bride safely away, while Cha Dol rushes him along.  “Bossam: Steal the Fate” ends with Ba Woo and Soo Kyung together on the beach, as they happily hold hands and walk off into the sunset, leaving the palace and it’s drama far behind.

Should I Watch

Bossam: Steal the Fate - Unspoiled Review

“Bossam: Steal the Fate” is a typical period drama that mixes life of the common people with palace intrigue to tell a story of love, family and betrayal.  The first half of the story is used to lay the ground work for the political battle that is to come, and with 20 episodes, they are in no hurry to rush the story along.   So expect a slow story that picks up momentum as it goes.  The leads have great chemistry, even though the romance is subtle and understated.   But don’t expect a passionate love story.  This is a good historical drama with interesting characters played by a talented cast, and a storyline that takes enough interesting turns to hold your interest.  I give “Bossam: Steal the Fate” an 8 out of 10 ramen.

The Story

I Remember You - Full Review

Lured by a string of serial murders and an anonymous e-mail, an intelligent profiler comes back to Korea after years abroad.  But hoping to find an answer to the current mysterious deaths is not his only motivation.   There seems to be some connection to his own past and a killer who left an indelible mark on his life.  Teaming up with local police detectives, they will do their best to find justice for the many people who have lost their lives because of one deranged criminal.

Seo In Guk as Lee Hyun

When Lee Hyun was young, his father became convinced that he was a psychopath.  That misunderstanding changes the course of all their lives and leaves Hyun alone.  Since then, Hyun has become a successful criminal profiler and American professor with an instinct as sharp as a modern day Sherlock. An anonymous e-mail brings him back to Korea to help with a current investigation. Though he begins working with local detectives on the current cases, he doesn’t tell them about any connection they might have to his father’s murder or his brother’s disappearance.  But when he finds out that one of the detectives has been following his movements for the last 20 years, he realizes that he has gained an ally who might be able to help him recover his past memories, find his brother, and finally capture the psychopath who set it all in motion.

I Remember You - Full Review

Lee Hyun has lived a traumatic life that leaves him aloof and guarded.  The only thing he has ever been able to trust is his own intellect.  Many of the memories he had of his life with his family have been erased by time and trauma.  But he still yearns for the brother he lost.  Seo In Guk is wonderful in this role.  He is prickly and unemotional in the beginning but also vulnerable and caring later on. I love his exasperated expression when he is dealing with Ji Ahn in the beginning.  As the truth is revealed, he has so many emotions to sort through, but he stays grounded as he wrestles with all the implications of what has happened to him and what his brother has done.

Jang Na Ra as Cha Ji Ahn

Cha Ji Ahn has had a crush on Hyun since they were kids, even though he doesn’t remember her.  She has her own connections to Hyun’s family tragedy because her father was a prison guard at the time who was unfairly accused of letting a prisoner escape on purpose.  She has been secretly following him since that time, hoping to find the escaped murderer and clear her father’s name.  She is shocked when Hyun shows up at the scene of the most recent murder but she is thrilled with the opportunity to finally find Lee Jun Ho.  But controlling her own personal feelings gets more difficult, the more time she spends with him.

I Remember You - Full Review

Cha Ji Ahn balances her tenacious sense of justice with a quirky clumsiness that is vintage Jang Na Ra.  She became a detective with the hope of finding justice for her father and also closure for herself.  She has been drawn to Hyun since she found out that they both suffered at the hands of Lee Jun Ho.  But as they investigate together those feelings grow and intensify.  Jang Na Ra brings her usual charm to this role, and I found Detective Cha to be determined and tough without having to have all the answers.

Park Bo Gum as Jung Sun Ho/Lee Min

Jung Sun Ho is a lawyer to the rich and powerful and also Lee Hyun’s long-lost brother.  He is also a psychopathic serial killer responsible for several murders involving missing bodies.  He was raised by Lee Jun Ho and believes that his brother abandoned him and left him with Jung Sun Ho.

Choi Won Young as Lee Jun Ho

Lee Jun Ho is the local police coroner who handles the bodies for their investigations.  As we later learn, he is also the one responsible for killing at least several of them.  He is the grown up Lee Jun Yung, who raised Min and taught him everything he knows about how to be a psychopath.

Do Kyung Soo as Lee Jun Yung

Things I Liked

♥ Villains

I just have to give a shout out to Park Bo Gum and Do Kyung Soo for their amazing portrayal as troubled villains.  Neither of these sweet looking young actors are generally thought of as villains, and that just made it all the more chilling.  They both handled with roles with a subtleness that gave me just the right amount of the “creeps” without overdoing it.

♥ Eun Bok

While it was a bummer that Eun Bok ended up in prsion for his part in helping Jun Ho, he is a cop who committed crimes.  They couldn’t exactly just sweep it all under the rug.  But what I loved was the teams response to it all.  Rather than being angry and abandoning him they rallied around him to show love and understanding.  Even after the time jump, Seung Joo is still visiting Eun Bok and offer his support.  Letting Eun Bok know that he is not alone is the the first step to helping him find healing.

♥ Brothers

Because of the early death of their mother, Hyun was responsible for taking care of Min when they were younger.  So once Hyun learns Min’s true identity, it is only natural that he would go back to acting like a parent toward him.  It was cute to see the way Min obviously wanted that kind of attention and pretended not to.  Their brotherly interactions were very sweet and sincere and I loved the few scenes where we got to see them together as brothers.  The plot twist that Hyun killed their mother’s murderer was a great one.  While Hyun repressed the entire incident, Min lived with the trauma and it helped to shape his innocent psyche.  And through it all, Min tried to protect Hyun’s feelings by saying he was just born this way.  What a sweet tribute to brotherly love.

I Remember You - Full Review

Things I Didn’t Like

Min’s Childhood

So many questions remain about what Min’s life was like growing up with Jung Ho.  I wish we had gotten a bit more insight into their relationship and what it all looked like.  Jung Ho obviously had some affection for Min, since, even until the end, he kept begging Min to run away with him.  Also, the coroner just happens to miss the kill shot with the knife in his final struggle with Min?  I find that hard to believe.   And Min seemed to feel a lingering responsiblity to Jung Ho.  How did they survive on the run, and what happened after Min was kidnapped to solidify his psychopathic tendancies?

Ha Yoon Ji

Ha Yoon Ji was a servant for Jun Young’s family and she helped the boy escape his abusive situation.  I can understand that.  But when Jun Young kills the whole household except for her, she chooses to stay in touch with him years later?  What is her motivation to continue helping him?  Is she part of the solution or the problem?  Especially since she is the one who ends up saving him from Hyun.  I don’t feel like we got a clear explanation of her relationship with Jun Ho and why she would remain involved with him.

Gullible Detective

At points, Ji Ahn’s character seemed a bit too naive and gullible.  Sure, she is dealing with genius profilers and psychopaths, but still, she is a detective.  Shouldn’t her police senses have noticed something unsettling about the crazy coroner who is calling his shots before some of the victims even showed up?  And Hyun just always seemed to be several steps ahead of her from the very beginning.  Again, I know, genius.  But really?  She should have been able to at least give him a run for his money once or twice.

I Remember You - Full Review

The Ending

“I Remember You” gives us a quiet happy ending with some open ended stories that left some fans dissatisfied.  So, let’s jump in.  First off, Eun Bok is arrested for his part in helping Jun Ho and being his mole.  Min goes to kill Jun Ho but ends up getting stabbed himself and his body disappears.  Later, Hyun meets up with Jun Ho to ask him to at least return Min’s body to him.  Then he meets with Ji Ahn and tells her that he may need to go away for a while but can’t tell her anything else.  Fast forward a year.  Thanks to Team Leader Kang, the special investigation team has survived.  Seung Joo is still visiting Eun Bok in prison, where he seems to be doing well.  Ji Ahn is still missing Hyun, who still hasn’t returned.    Surprise!  Min is still alive.  Hyun visits him in the hospital and gives him a choice to either stay and pay for his crimes as Hyun’s brother or assume a new idenitity with paperwork that he gives him.  The team gets called to a crime scene.  Just like the begininng, they arrive to find someone already there.  He turns and it’s Hyun.  Everyone welcomes him back, although he pretends to be aloof to them all.  Later, he and Ji Ahn take a walk and he tells her that he is back to stay.  They kiss and plan to live happily ever after.  Back at the hospital, Min dresses and leaves but the envelop with his new identity is left on the bed.  He made the choice to stay!  The final scene has Hyun and Ji Ahn walking hand in hand.  Jun Ho walks by and there is a flash of recognition as Hyun promises that he will find Jun ho and punish him for his crimes.  The end.

I Remember You - Unspoiled Review

With an abundance of darker crime dramas these days, you don’t need to dig into past dramas to get your fix, but I was drawn by this talented cast and I’m glad I was.   As a crime drama with a psychological twist that also offers a bit of romance and even hints of humor, this drama is great for those who appreciated a wide range of genres.  Putting an emphasis on the psychological aspects of serial killers means that you shouldn’t expect a fast moving, high energy kind of show.  “I Remember You” moves along slowly but digs deep.  This drama may be 6 years old, but it is chock full of familiar faces that drama fans will immediately recognize and the chemistry between these characters is great from bromance to sweet love. Taking the time to dive into some complex theories on ideas like nature vs. nurture make this drama thought-provoking and intriguing.  I give “I Remember You” an 8 out of 10 ramen.

At a Distance, Spring is Green - Full Review

Park Ji Hoon as Yeo Joon

Yeo Joon shows up at his first year of university as a wealthy and popular student who is liked by everyone.  Until he meets a quiet upperclassman who keeps to himself and doesn’t seem to like anyone.  But a group project brings Joon into contact with the prickly senior and a female student who he develops romantic feelings for.  Getting to know these two classmates will mark one of the biggest events in Joon’s life as he learns much more than just academic lessons from his new mentors.  Joon’s family life has played an important role in his development.  His parents are distant and a tragic incident with his older brother has made Joon hate them all.  But as certain memories begin to become more clear, Joon finds out that not everything happened the way he thought and maybe his brother is not the villain he has always believed.

At a Distance, Spring is Green - Full Review

Yeo Joon seems to have everything, but the truth is that he is terribly lonely and insecure.  He smiles in front of people but he uses it as a defense to hide his true feelings.  His family life has been difficult and traumatic, with a physically abusive father and a mother who is more concerned about her own financial stability than the health of her or her children. Joon has never had a real family experience until he meets Soo Hyun, who treats him like a treasured, and sometimes annoying, younger brother.  Park Ji Hoon was irresistible in this role that catered to his shiny personality, but also drew you in to the delicate personality he hid inside.

Kang Min Ah as Kim So Bin

Kim So Bin is a motivated student who lives in the dorms and tries to balance her school and social life.  Her best friend is a guy she has known since childhood.  She has a crush on him but has never gotten the nerve to confess her feelings to him.  She approaches Joon because she needs him to give her his student job to pad her resume.  Joon ends up liking her but So Bin has a hard time believing his feelings are sincere, since he is a popular student who seems to have everything, while she is just an average girl.  So Bin finds herself in a group project with Joon and the unfriendly senior who has disregarded her work in the past.  But as the trio makes up the strongest part of their work group, they find themselves forming an unlikely friendship, and she is eventually won over by Joon’s puppy dog-like charms.

At a Distance, Spring is Green

So Bin’s character development is definitely not as strong as the two male characters, but she is a sweet love interest and friend who rounds the trio out nicely.  She is honest and sincere in her relationships and expectations.  Kang Min Ah gives this character a down-to-earth feeling that is likeable and relatable.  While she shares a difficult childhood with the other leads, the story of her parent’s divorce and her mother abandoning her doesn’t factor into the overall story much.  It would have been nice if we could have gotten more insight into her history and personality.

Wang Young Ran is a PE major who is Soo Hyun’s only friend.  Young Ran would like her relationship with Soo Hyun to be more than friends, but he is too overwhelmed with everything else in his life to think of dating.  She lives in the dorm with So Bin and acts tough and reckless, even though she is dealing with her own struggles.  She comes from a wealthy family and tries to use her connections to help Soo Hyun, even though he refuses her efforts.

Things I Liked

♥ Joon and Soo Hyun

It’s great to have a drama where the friendship is at least as important as the romance, and plenty would argue it’s more important.  These two young men form a brotherly bond that is so sweet.  Watching Joon slowly win Soo Hyun over despite Soo Hyun’s stubborn resistance is rewarding and fun.

♥ Filming

This drama was just pleasant to look at.  The bright colors portrayed youth and growth in a beautiful way.  The camera angles were crisp and clean and the facial shots showed moments of raw emotion.  The visual aspects of this drama makes it easy to see how it was based off a webtoon.

♥ Cast Chemistry

From all the behind-the-scenes articles and pictures I saw of this drama, it seems like the cast, especially the leads, were extremely close.  I feel like that friendship really came through the screen and made their acting so sincere.  This drama could have easily fallen flat without this kind of natural interaction between the cast, but I was happy to feel their friendship and respect coming through their roles.

At a Distance, Spring is Green

Things I Didn’t Like

What Happened to the Brother?

After introducing an issue that will have catastrophic impact on the family, it felt like a let-down to not hear what happened to Joon Wan.  Did he lose his teaching job?  Did he take over the family business.  There seem to be several realistic guesses, and I hate that.  I would have liked to see him settled, with a chance to finally enjoy his life after years of living in such a toxic family.

Teacher Love

The relationship between Professor Park and Professor Song was a classic “some” relationship.  Professor Park, for all his sappy sentimentality, obviously had feelings for Professor Song.  But for such a smart woman, she really seemed to be clueless.  Did they finally stop dancing around the subject and try dating?  I sure would like to think so.

Advanced Classes

Did I miss the part about why Joon just got to take all the upper division classes with his seniors?  I know that his family was well connected and had power, but I feel like they never really addressed why he was there or what would have made him want to take the advanced classes instead of being with his peers.  For a culture that puts so much emphasis on age and rank, it seemed weird that Joon just took all the classes meant for third year and no one batted an eye.

At a Distance, Spring is Green - Full Review

The Ending

As the voice over at the end of “At a Distance, Spring is Green” tell us, the end is really just the beginning for all of our characters.  And that is the overarching feeling as things draw to a close.  There aren’t many endings or resolutions.  The one exception is Joon’s family.  His father is finally arrested, although we don’t find out what kind of repercussions that has on the rest of the family.  But Joon and Joon Wan have finally cleared the air and are working to restore their realtionship.  While Soo Hyun still maintains that he has no time for dating, he does find time to drop by the library and leave a note and drink for Young Ran, so maybe there is still hope for them somewhere down the road.  So Bin and Joon are still happily dating, although she isn’t so thrilled with her new role as judge and peace keeper between Joon and Soo Hyun who have progressed to bickering like true brothers, although obviously with real brotherly affection.

Should I Watch

At a Distance, Spring is Green - Unspoiled Review

“At a Distance, Spring is Green” is a beautiful coming of age story about healing and acceptance.  It is poignant and thought-provoking, but if you don’t enjoy slow-moving plots that focus on character development and relationships, you should probably skip this one.  This is a story about 20-somethings who are college student with difficult pasts.  If you find physical and emotional abuse difficult to watch, there are a few troubling scenes.  The plot here is fairly simple and largely predictable, but it’s the beauty of the character interactions that make this drama special.  If you are looking for a feel-good drama that highlights the beauty of youth and  self-discovery, this one will touch your heart.  I give “At a Distance, Spring is Green” an 8 out of 10 ramen.

The Story

Zombie Detective - Full Review

A man wakes up as a zombie with no memory of how he got there, although completely self-aware that he used to be human.  After witnessing a murder in the desolate mountain area where he woke up, he assumes the identity of the victim and becomes Kim Moo Young, a local private detective.  Using the detectives name and resources, he begins to investigate what happened to him, hoping to find a way to return to being human again.  Gong Sun Ji is an investigative journalist who becomes indebted to Moo Young and decides to work as his assistant to repay him, even though he adamantly tries to refuse her help. Now Moo Young must be careful so Sun Ji doesn’t find out that he isn’t even human.

Zombie Detective - Full Review

Choi Jin Hyuk as Kim Moo Young/Kang Min Ho

A man wakes up on a dark mountain-side, with no memory of who he is or how he got there.  What he does know is that he is no longer human, but a zombie.  He picks up the wallet of a man who has been murdered and decides to use his identity as Kim Moo Young, private detective.  His goal is to avoid contact with humans as much as possible, because they are scary and mean, while trying to discover who he really is.  But his plans to hide in his office are foiled when he meets Gong Sun Ji and she insists on working with him.  As they work together, Sun Ji eventually figures out that he is a zombie, but rather than being afraid of him, she wants to help him live safely among humans and solve the mystery of his own murder.

Zombie Detective - Full Review

Kim Moo Young is vulnerable and afraid of life among humans.  In his mind, the humans are the true monsters.  Even knowing this, Moo Young puts an amazing effort into making sure that he never hurts anyone or loses control.  Choi Jin Hyuk is a highlight of this drama and his buff muscles provide some pretty great eye candy.  He conveys the emotional innocence so perfectly while adding a dry sense of humor to the whole situation.  And when he finds something that makes him happy, his giddiness is contagious.  His droll sense of timing gave the character a charming earnestness that I loved.  Who knew Choi Jin Hyuk would find his calling in comedy?

Park Joo Hyun as Gong Sun Ji

Gong Sun Ji meets Moo Young through a misunderstanding, when she throws a helmet at him and puts him in the hospital.  When she realizes her mistake, she goes to him and proposes that rather than settling with money she doesn’t have, she work with him solving cases at his detective agency.  Moo Young tries to refuse, but Sun Ji insists.  As they work together, Sun Ji starts to realize that something is going on.  Using her investigative skills, she eventually discovers that he is a zombie.  But rather than scaring her, she promises to help him on his journey to try to become human again.

Zombie Detective - Full Review

Gong Sun Ji is persistant and nosy.  She has worked hard as an investigative reporter but it isn’t until she joins Moo Young’s detective agency that she really feels fulfilled in her work.  Park Joo Hyun does a good job of playing the well-meaning but impulsive female lead.  Though she handles the role fine, the character herself was a bit non-descript and not especially memorable.  She definitely paled in comparison to such a strong and entertaining male lead.

Kwon Hwa Woon as Cha Do Hyun

Cha Do Hyun is Sun Ji’s long-time friend.  He is a successful police detective who has a crush on Sun Ji.  But he has never confessed his feelings, and Sun Ji has never realized his feelings.  Once Moo Young shows up, Do Hyun gets jealous and tries to figure out who Moo Young is so he can keep him away from Sun Ji.

Tae Hang Ho and Lee Joong Ok as Lee Sung Rok and Wang Wey

Lee Sung Rok and Wang Wey are also private detectives.  They run the World King Agency, across the street from Moo Young’s office.  Their goal is to chase Moo Young out of the neighborhood, so they will be the only detectives.  But in the end, the two agencies combine efforts to solve the Santa Murder cases.

Zombie Detective - Full Review

Ahn Se Ha and Hwang Bo Ra as Lee Tae Gyun and Gong Sun Young

Lee Tae Gyun and Gong Sun Young are Sun Ji’s brother-in-law and sister.  She lives with them.  Sun Young is over-bearing and opinionated about everything Sun Ji does.  Tae Gyun, on the other hand, is a gentle character who writes zombie movies as a profession.

Things I Liked

♥ Make-up and costuming

While many aspects of this drama were heavy on cheesiness, no expense was spared in realistic make-up and cool costumes. They did a great job in bringing the zombie characters to “life”.  And Moo Young’s clothing screamed 1940’s private detective.  It would have been easy to over-due the whole zombie look with jagged clothing and washed out skin tones, but they struck a nice balance here that doesn’t overreach.

♥ Sun Ji’s Family

Ahn Se Ha and Hwang Bo Ra are hilarious and I really enjoyed their roles as Sun Ji’s family.  Hwang Bo Ra with her toilet paper roll curlers and bold personality was very well-done.  And the comeraderie between Sun Ji and her brother-in-law Lee Tae Gyun was really sweet.   It’s always invaluable to have  a zombie expert in the family!

♥ Unique Genre

Let’s face it.  Few people would blend horror, comedy, and film noir.  But strangely, this one works, as long as you go into it with the right expectations.  Each element brings an unusual feel to the drama and the whole package is something different and interesting.  With so many dramas borrowing from the same themes and tropes, this one provides a fun change of pace.

Zombie Detective - Full Review

Things I Didn’t Like

Rough Start

This drama starts out a bit slow.  Mostly, there is just a lot of set-up involved before they can get into the heart of the story.  But it did seem a little disjointed in the first couple episodes.  Once everything gets introduced, the shows settles into a more consistant rhythm.  As with many crime dramas, the beginning makes a lot more sense once you get to the end of it all, but it can make it hard to get into in the beginning.

More Moo Young

There are moments when this drama creates some heartfelt character insight, but I think they could have explored more of Moo Young’s thoughts and feelings.  His lonliness as a zombie in a human world, the ideas of what it really means to be human, and just who the real monsters are provide an interesting perpective and food for thought.  I would have enjoyed a little less comedy for a little more heart.

Story in a Story

Usually I love a story within a story as an extra layer of storytelling, but they didn’t really work for me this time.  The story scenes didn’t mesh well with the rest of the drama and never seemed to really fit in.  I feel like that screen time could have been used for other storylines or character development that would have enhanced the drama better.

Zombie Detective - Full Review

The Ending

As is common with a lot of crime dramas these days, “Zombie Detective” ends by wrapping the cases up well but still leaving some crumbs of cliff-hangers in case someone decided to do a second season.  The gang works together to capture Noh Poong Shik, who has become a zombie himself, but Moo Young ends up having to kill him when he refuses to surrender.  With their final open cases settled, Moo Young decides to move into the mountains alone, where no one else will be in danger.  Fast forward 1 year.  Sun Ji has taken over Moo Young’s detective agency.  Tae Gyun has finally written a successful zombie movie and become famous.  And Sung Rok is fulfilling his dream of making World King Agency an international company by sending Wang Wey to open an office in China.  When Sun Ji receives an invitation to a Halloween costume party, she is hopeful that Moo Young will be there.  They finally meet and begin catching up and Moo Young asks her to help him find an American doctor who has invented a zombie cure.  Just then, a murder is discovered at the party and Sun Ji and Moo Young decide to work together to solve it.  In the final scene we see that Sung Rok, who was bitten by Poong Shik but seemed to be fine, might actually be a zombie now.  So will there be a season 2 where Moo Young and Sung Rok continue looking for a way to regain their humanity?  There is no official announcement yet, but you never know!

Zombie Detective - Full Review

Should I Watch

Zombie Detective - Unspoiled Review

“Zombie Detective” is a silly crime comedy with heart.  It is full of cheesy humor and crazy storylines.  Despite it’s title, this is not a horror drama, so if you are looking for gory fight scenes and true crime, this is not for you.    Though there is a love triangle, romance is kept to just a hint, so don’t expect a deep love story either.  There are some heart-warming moments where Moo Young gives  voice-overs on what it really means to be human, but most of the drama really focuses on the comic elements and his role as a detective.  If you are looking for something fun and unapolgetically ridiculous, this drama is an easy watch with a unique feel.  I give “Zombie Detective ” an 8 out of 10 ramen.

Go Ho is a 29 year old, single, advertising contractor who has struggled to find success in career and love.  And things aren’t looking up when her ex-boyfriend shows up as her new boss and seems to want to pretend nothing happened.  But his sudden appearance awakens the competitive nature in some of the other guys she works with.  Now she has five suitors and she works with all of them.  Is one of them the right guy for her?

Kwon Yu Ri as Go Ho

Go Ho works at an advertising agency with a boss who is difficult and impatient.  After a painful break-up with her boyfriend, Ji Hoon, last year, she has thrown herself into the job.  So she is shocked when he shows up as the new team leader in her company.  And it seems like he would like to be more than just a team leader.  Not only is Ji Hoon expressing romantic interest, but the whole office is suddenly full of potential suitors, including her prickly former boss.  As a way to process her feelings about each guy, she publishes a magazine article for her side job where she rates and anyalzes  each guy.  But she quickly learns that, for better or for worse, first impressions are often wrong, and people are seldom who they seem.

Gogh, The Starry Night - Full Review

Go Ho is cheerful and hard-working but she hasn’t been lucky in work or love.  When her last relationship ended without any explanation, it left her feeling insecure and hurt.  Kwon Yu Ri plays this role well and I love the chaotic charm she brings to the character.  She conveys a kind of vulnerablility which makes the men around her want to take care of her.  It’s easy to overplay that kind of neediness, but I felt like Kwon Yu Ri handled it well.

Kim Young Kwang as Kang Tae Ho

Kang Tae Ho is a team leader at Go Ho’s advertising agency.  Tae has had a crush on her since the first day she showed up on the job, but he has always missed the timing to confess.  When Ji Hoon shows up at the company and other guys start expressing an interest in her, Tae Ho decides that after four years of waiting, he isn’t missing his chance this time.  Now he just has to convince Go Ho that this hot temper he has shown for years isn’t the real him.

Gogh, The Starry Night - Full Review

Kang Tae Ho has let his personal frustration with Go Ho influence his actions at work, but his bad temper is really just jealousy.  But his secret actions reveal his true heart as he constantly watches over her and takes care of her.  Kim Young Kwang is one of those actors who expresses so may emotions through just his face and I loved him in this role.  From irritation to longing and everything in between, you could tell exactly what he was thinking and feeling without a single word.

Hwang Ji Hoon is the ex-boyfriend who broke up with Go Ho a year ago.  After realizing that he doesn’t want to live without her, he is hoping to win back her heart.  He gets a job at her company so she will have to see him, and gets lucky when she is transferred into his team.  But has too much happened for them to start again?

Shin Jae Ha as Oh Jung Min

Oh Jung Min is the handsome, young playboy at the office.  Every woman who works there considers him the dream boyfriend.  He flirts shamelessly with Go Ho and begs her to date him.  But are his feelings sincere or is she just another woman for him to toy with?

Kim Ji Hoon as Park Jin Woo

Park Jin Woo is older and rough around the edges but he is a family man with a heart of gold.  He has worked comfortably with Go Ho for years but she never guessed that he might be romantically interested in her.  He has always seemed brusque and unkempt but there is more there than meets the eye.

Things I Liked

♥ Fun Cameos

“Gogh, The Starry Night” already has a pretty star-studded cast, so cameos are just an added bonus, but this drama had plenty.  Most noteably, the “Pinocchio” reunion of Kim Young Kwang with Park Shin Hye, Lee Jong Sook, and Yoon Kyun Sang.  I must admit I gave a delighted squeal when each of them made their sudden appearances.

♥ Bite-Sized Episodes

In terms of kdramas, 20 minute episodes might seem short, although that is a similar length to many American shows, if you factor in commercials.  Actually, whether you’re fitting one show into a quick break or want to marathon a couple  back to back, 20 minutes is really nice length.  And 20 episodes is plenty of time to establish a simple story and relateable characters.

♥ The Leads

Tae Ho and Go Ho are both really likeable.  Both as individual characters and as a couple.  Kim Young Kwang is absolutely swoon-worthy, with his sly smirky smiles and smoky eyes.  And even while pretending to be a grouch, he is attentive to Go Ho’s needs and feelings.  And Go Ho escapes all the irritating rom-com troupes.  She doesn’t spending a lot of time whining or gloating.  She is down-to-earth and relateable.

Gogh, The Starry Night - Full Review

Things I Didn’t Like

More Choi Chang Sub

It really felt like there were more like 4.5 suitors instead of 5.  Before throwing his name into the point breakdown, no one was even aware that Choi Chang Sub was interested.  But I love the unique element he brings to the pool of potential boyfriends and I wish they would have given him a bit more screen time to establish his presence.

Office Drama

There is an attempt to broaden the plot a bit with some work drama and competition, but it never really gets very interesting.  It makes sense, since a lot of the romance has to happen in the office but the work-related story never really gets off the ground or goes anywhere.

Second Lead

As a second lead, I didn’t feel like Hwang Ji Hoon gave us much to work with, character-wise.  I didn’t feel much chemistry between him and Go Ho and the role came across as pretty flat, in my opinion.  Ji Hoon is set up as the only real competition to Tae Ho, but I just didn’t find anything interesting about his character.

Gogh, The Starry Night - Full Review

The Ending

“Gogh, The Starry Night” is a simple drama with a nice happily ever after.  In the ends, Go Ho meets with Ji Hoon to tell him that  while she has fond memories of their time together and wishes him happiness in the future, she has someone else who is her present.  Tae Ho shows up, looking worried that she will choose Ji Hoon, but Go Ho comes to him and tells him that she has made her choice clear and they hug.  There is a cute voice-over where Go Ho talks about how her ratings for each guy has changed as she has gotten to know them better.  The ending scene shows Go Ho waiting to meet Tae Ho after a meeting.  He shows up, still acting like the prickly boss we have seen, until he flashes that beautiful smile and holds out his hand to her.  They walk away, laughing and teasing each other, obviously very happy together.

Gogh, The Starry Night - Full Review

Should I Watch

Gogh, The Starry Night - Unspoiled Review

I don’t usually bother to do reviews on the shorter webdramas, but I was so suurprised at how much I enjoyed this one, that I decided to.  “Gogh The Starry Night is a cute romantic comedy with some very charming characters.  At about half the length of the average kdrama, you shouldn’t expect a huge amount of character development or complex plot, but it gave enough story for me to become invested in the characters and entertained by their web of interactions.  Most true romantic comedies are light on plot anyway, so in this case, the length is actually an asset.  The story is simple and to the point, without a lot of wasted material.  if you are looking for a quick binge with a fun romance, I recommend you give this one a try.  I give “Gogh, The Starry Night” a 8 out of 10 ramen.

Lee Je Hoon as Kim Do Gi

After finding his mother brutally murdered, Kim Do Gi is approached by Jang Sung Chul to join him in establishing an organization that helps powerless victims get revenge on those who have wronged them.  Do Gi becomes the premium taxi driver for Rainbow Taxi Service, where he meets and helps their clients, by carrying out various missions to bring them justice.  For years, their team has worked with those in need, but when their cases begin crossing paths with an inquisitive prosecutor she becomes suspicious of their actions and begins investigating the disappearance of several criminals.

Taxi Driver - Full Review

Kim Do Gi lived the upstanding life of a respected military officer until his mother’s death left him feeling angry and powerless.  Now he is determined to  bring the kind of closure he never got, to the people who come to them for help.  This is another outstanding performance by Lee Je Hoon, who continues to prove his talent and diversity in the roles he plays.  Even in the course of this one series, Kim Do Gi disguises himself as several very different characters and they are all a joy to watch.  Toward the end of this drama, as Do Gi struggles with the question of whether revenge simply breeds more revenge in a neverending cycle of pain, we see his character finally begin to heal and grow so that he can finally embrace the life he has left to live.

Esom as Kang Ha Na

Kang Ha Na is a fierce prosecutor who becomes suspicious when she realizes that several of the criminals from her cases have mysteriously disappeared unexplainably.  As she digs into these cases, the clues lead her back to Rainbow Taxi Service and a mysterious deluxe taxi that seems to show up at the last place each criminal is seen.  Ha Na becomes obsessed with finding out what is really happening at the mysterious taxi company and what secrets Do Gi is hiding.

Taxi Driver - Full Review

Kang Ha Na has become successful at her job by seeing the law as completely black and white, but the diffence between right and wrong has not always been so simple for her.  And as she begins to uncover the truth behind Rainbow Taxi company, she is once again faced with the question of whether sometimes the end doesn’t justify the means.  Her faith in the system is shaken by the idea that this team of vigilantes is able to bring justice to situations that the law could not.  Esom did a great job as the determined and unswerving prosecutor.  But I do wish they would have given her more of a backstory, like the other characters got.  As a lead, I felt her part was a bit one dimensional in a drama full of great characters.

Kim Eui Sung as Jang Sung Chul

Jang Sung Chul is the CEO of Rainbow Taxi Company and also runs a non-profit organization that helps victims and their families through financial support as well as other resources.  He gathered the Rainbow team together after his parents were coldly murdered in their home, and operates the buiness out of his home.  While he is a kind and gentle person when dealing with his team and the victims they assist, he is ruthless when it comes to dispensing justice.

Pyo Ye Jin as Ahn Go Eun

Ahn Go Eun is the team hacker.  Her sister was driven to kill herself after her boyfriend posted a sex video of the two of them on the internet.  Now her role on the Rainbow team is to be the eyes and ears during their missions and handle any computer security problems they run into.  She and Do Gi have a special relationship that hints at a romantic attraction, although it is never clearly specified.

Jang Hyuk In and Bae Yoo Ram as Choi Kyung Goo and Park Jin Eon (Mechanics)

Kyung Goo and Jin Eon are the taxi company mechanics.  While Kyung Goo is the lead mechanic, who specializes in auto development, Jin Eon is the assistant who specializes in aircraft maintanence.  Their siblings had been engaged before dying in an apartment fire set by an arsonist.  They spend most of their time inventing new items to make Do Gi’s taxi tougher and more effective on missions.

Things I Liked

♥ The Many faces of Do Gi

It is impossible not to appreciate the many disguises used by Do Gi during their missions.  Each character brings a whole new role for Lee Je Hoon and he plays them all ot the fullest.  From straight laced substitute teacher to seasoned gangster, and a few roles in between, we get to enjoy the humor of each change.  For an actor who has shown so much diversity in the span of his career, this is just a chance for fans to be reminded of his talent.

♥ Twin Twist

I love a good plot twist and I have to say I never saw this one coming.  Surprise!  Goo Seok Tae has a twin.  Of course, there wasn’t much evidence to make us suspect that, but it was still a fun twist that was carried out perfectly.  Our villain power suddenly doubles and it confuses our heroes just enough to give the bad guys the upper hand, however temporary.  Well done, writers!

♥ Moral Dilemma

“Taxi Driver” gives us a lot of food for thought on our ideas of right and wrong.  When, if ever, is it okay to break the law in order to see real justice?  Each character has come to their own conclusions to this question.  But even as we are whisked up in the story and rooting for our Rainbow team, we can easily acknowledge that there are lines being crossed.  The truth is that things like right and wrong or truth and justice are seldom black and white and some times it’s good to be reminded of that.

Things I Didn’t Like

Disjointed Story Arcs

Maybe because of the highly emotional tone of each case, the multiple story arcs in “Taxi Driver” sometimes made the drama feel disjointed and lacking any cohesive plot.  This problem was made worse by the fact that the drama was forced to change writers halfway through, and the new writers brought their own style to the later episodes.  This episodic style is becoming more popular in kdrama these days and it does leave more room for subsequent seasons, but it also takes away from the tight, well-developed plots that fans have come to expect.

Female Romantic Interest

The two female leads were unusual in this drama.  There was obviously an attraction between Do Gi and Go Eun, and I really enjoyed their sweet, shy interactions.  But the presence of Ha Na and her realtionship with Do Gi didn’t seem to fit into that situation.  When we first meet Ha Na, she seems more like the love interest in an enemies to lovers kind of story.  Even as the story emerges, there is some unspecified connection and tension between Do Gi and Ha Na that feel ambiguous and kind of confusing.

Too Evil

While the Rainbow team had plenty of opportunities to examine their methods, and eventually consider ending their service because of it, other characters didn’t seem as enlightened.  The villains embraced their evil ways without any real motivation or regret.  We never see them refelct on their choices.  And what about Ha Na who stubbornly followed the law through the whole series, and then suddenly decides that locking people in a self-made prison, among other serious crimes, is something she is not only willing to look the other way  for but something she wants to participate in.  The lack of any self-reflection made these characters a bit one-dimensional, in my opinion.

The Ending

“Taxi Driver” manages to tie up all the loose plot ends while still leaving a door open for a second season, which is currently in talks.  The gang wraps up one last case by forcing Chul Young to admit that he was the one who killed Do Gi’s mother.  Ha Na decides that she is going to ignore all the crimes committed by Rainbow Taxi company and resign, but the Chief Prosecutor rips it up and resigns himself to protect them all.  One year later, we see Chul Young recieving his sentence, as well as Sung Mi and the Gu twins.  While the twins get life in prison, Sung Mi gets 20 years.  The Rainbow team is all back to working in their individual fields.  Jin Eon is working with space shuttles, Kyung Goo is doing maintenance for racing cars, and Go Eun has become a police officer.  Do Gi has taken a break to travel and enjoy life.  But when each of them, including Ha Na, recieve a message on their pagers, they meet back at the taxi company.  It looks like they didn’t actually disband after all, they just added Ha Na.  And we get an introduction to their next case, when we see parents stuff a young child into a suitcase and abandon her.  Luckily Do Gi is there to set her free.  What happens next?  Stay tuned…

Should I Watch

Taxi Driver - Unspoiled Review

“Taxi Driver” is a dark, gritty action drama that features an amazing cast and interesting stories based on real life cases.  It begins as a more case based crime drama before moving into a more over-arching theme for the second half of the series.  There is a focus on fighting and action scenes, so if you don’t enjoy watching an invincible hero take down 12 of his opponents in violent and creative ways, you probably won’t enjoy this drama.  Also, the violence suffered by the victims is heartbreaking and touches on some sensitive subjects if you are triggered by those kinds of stories.  “Taxi Driver” never pretends to be a light, fun drama.  But it is a thought-provoking look at the legal system and those who fall through the cracks of true justice.  The Rainbow Taxi crew each have their own tragic backstories that lend themselves to interesting character development and give insight into each members’ strengths and weaknesses within the team.  I give “Taxi Driver” a 9 out of 10 ramen.

So I Married the Anti-Fan - Full Review

When a young journalist loses her job after following a story about a famous idol, she is convinced that he is behind her being fired.  Desperate for revenge, she becomes his #1 anti-fan.  When a tv producer approaches her with an offer to appear on a reality show with the singer, she sees her chance to expose him for the jerk that he really is.  But as she spends time with him, she realizes that her assumptions about him may not have been fair and just maybe he isn’t a jerk after all.

Choi Tae Joon as Hoo Joon

Hoo Joon is a popular singer who worked his way up from a trainee.  After a highly publicized run-in with a journalist, Joon is hoping to never see the woman again.  So he is not pleased when he is asked to appear on a reality show where they pretend to be married.  But as they begin to spend time together, he finds himself strangely attracted to her quirky personality.  But how will his fans take the news that he is really dating his co-star and will their relationship cost him his career?

So I Married the Anti-Fan - Full Review

Hoo Joon has invested everything in his success.  Along the way he has given up his first love, his best friend, and allowed his agency to recreate his whole past.  He has learned the hard way that the life of an idol is isolated and lonely.  Because of this, he seems rude and arrogant.  But when he meets Geun Hyung, he begins to envision a life where he can really just be himself.  I thought Choi Tae Joon was good in this part.  He has a natural aloofness that lends itself to these kinds of characters but also a down-to-earth earnestness that made the character feel sincere in later episodes.   Joon’s desire to find someone who would love him for himself was  endearing

Choi Soo Young as  Lee Geun Young

Lee Geun Young works hard at her job as a journalist, which makes it easy for her boss and co-workers to take advantage of her.  They make her do all the work and then take credit for her great ideas.  In desperation, she chases a story that leads her to Hoo Joon.  But things quickly get out of hand and Geun Young ends up losing her job because of it.  So when tv producers approach her with the promise to pay her generously if she will participate in a reality show with Joon, she can’t resist their generous offer.  Geun Young plans to use her time with Joon to expose his horrible character and redeem herself.  But the more time she spends with him, the more she realizes that her first impressions were all wrong.  Unfortunately, the closer she gets to Joon, the more angry and violent his fans become.

So I Married the Anti-Fan - Full Review

Lee Geun  Young is a quirky underdog who has worked hard but never been able to get ahead.  Because of that, she is fiercely independant and determined.  But she is also naive and easily taken advantage of.  She desperately wants to believe that if she works hard enough, one day her hard work will pay off.  Choi Soo Young plays this socially akward role well, but unfortunately the story is really about an idol who falls in love.  Her own character gets little development outside of her interactions with Joon.  Even after meeting her parents and best friends, we still see very little about her as an individual.

Hwang Chan Sung as Choi Jae Joon (JJ)

Choi Jae Joon was a trainee with Hoo Joon, but he never succeeded in debuting.  Now he dates Joon’s ex-girlfriend and works for a talent agency owned by his father.  He is obsessed with beating Joon in any way he can.  His inferiority complex makes it so no one can even say Joon’s name around him.

Han Ji An as Oh In Hyung

Oh In Hyung also traineded with Hoo Joon and the two of them dated before Joon left her and JJ to debut on his own.  Desperate for a chance to debut as well, In Hyung joins JJ’s agency and begins dating him.  But JJ has personally kept her from becoming successful because he is afraid he will lose her.  Now she is just an older trainee who is past her prime.  This may be her last chance to become a singer and she won’t let anything or anyone stand in her way.

Things I Liked

♥ Go Soo Hwan

At last we get a guy best friend who isn’t secretly in love with the lead.  It was so refreshing to have a guy who had two girls as best friends, and never pined or crossed the line with either one of them.  It’s a rare find in kdrama land and I loved him all the more because of it.  I would have loved to see him get a little more story line but he was perfect as the supportive friend who was always available to listen and lean on.

♥ Lead Chemistry

Choi Tae Joon and Choi Soo Young worked well together.  Whether they were bickering, teasing each other, or flirting they seemed to strike a perfect balance and never overplayed it.  It always felt real and natural.  I looked forward to their scenes together and loved the simplisity of their realtionship.  Even toward the end when all the more serious plot lines were going on, they stayed strong and unwavering.  I was thankful they avoided the last minute break-up and reconciliation.

♥ The Waiting is Over

It bears mentioning that this drama was filmed two years ago, before Choi Tae Joon went into the military.  Faithful fans waited and wondered, for all this time, whatever happened to it.  I am happy that after so long, they were still able to air this drama.  The wait must have been equally disappointing for the cast and crew who worked so hard to produce it.  In the end, we all win now that this one has finally seen the light of day.

Things I Didn’t Like

Mr. Pink Pants

Initially I didn’t really care much about the story behind the guy in the pink pants who was kissing Geon Young’s boyfriend.  But then Geon Young brought it up again when she thought it might be Joon.  Since they mentioned it again, I thought maybe it was going to be important later.  But then we never hear about it again.  Usually if something is brought up a second time, there is some significance to it, so I just thought it was a bit weird.

Last Episodes

This drama seems like it would have been better with fewer episodes.  For me, the last few episodes seemed out of sync with the rest of the drama.  Once Joon’s secret past is exposed, they suddenly tackle a bunch of serious stories that don’t really serve much purpose.  I would have been happier if they condensed it down to 12 episodes and breezed over the melodrama.

JJ’s Brother

So, huge disclaimer here.  I am a huge Sung Hoon fan, so maybe it’s my personal bias.  But it would have been nice to see some resolution in JJ’s relationship with his brother.  It seems like a wasted opportunity to introduce his character and then just forget about him.  JJ was obviously in need of a lot of emotional healing, and mending some of his family relationships seems like a good place to start.

The Ending

“So I Married the Anti-Fan” is full of happily ever afters.  Before going off on his journey to rediscover himself, Joon pays off all of Mr. Bae’s debt, to keep Shooting Star running.  Joon’s biggest fans all speak out in his defense and do their best to restore his reputation.  And Geun Young finally pursues her dream as a writer.  After a three month jump, we find the gang back together for PD Han and Writer Noh’s wedding.  Soo Hwan has opened his own business doing wedding photography.  Mi Jung is back together with her boyfriend, who has given up studying law to become the “Hoo Joon of live streaming”.  Joon and In Hyung’s duet is gaining popularity, but she is turning down agency offers to focus on taking care of JJ, who is finally speaking again.  And our lead couple end the drama with a beautiful proposal in front of a crowd of fans.

Should I Watch

So I Married the Anti-Fan - Unspoiled Review

Every once in a while I just want a mindless, fluffy rom-com that gives me all the feels without making me work too hard.  And in this year of so many heavy crime dramas, “So I Married the Anti-Fan” is just that.  There is nothing new or groundbreaking about this plot.  Especially in the beginning, this drama is unapologetically cliche and relies on some well-loved kdrama tropes.  The fact that the drama didn’t try too hard to be more than that was part of the charm.  Fans looking for a complex plot with lots of character development should definitely skip this one.  But if you are looking for some light-weight romantic comedy that exists solely for the purpose of bringing the leads together in a sweet love story, this is a good choice.   I give “So I Married the Anti-Fan” an 8 out of 10 ramen.

Park Bo Young as Tak Dong Kyung

For Tak Dong Kyung, life has never been easy, but even she can’t believe her bad luck when her doctor informs her she has terminal brain cancer and only has 100 days to live. In a drunken fit, she curses this cruel world and wishes for it’s destruction.  But when she meets a mysterious man the next day who promises to grant her wish she isn’t so sure.  Sensing her hesitation, Doom includes a clause in their contract that if she doesn’t make her wish officially, the penalty will be the death of the person she loves the most.  Dong Kyung decides that the only way out of this situation is for her to fall in love with Doom so that the world will be saved and he will be the only one to die.  Unfortunately for her, the plan works too well and she is left with the impossible choice of killing the whole world or this sweet man who she has fallen deeply in love with.

Doom at your Service - Full Review

Tak Dong Kyung has spent her life sacrificing for the good of others; whether it be the aunt who raised her, her younger brother, or her work colleagues and clients.  She is generous and kindhearted.  She even tries to pretend that she is okay with her impending death.  But as she is forced to come to terms with the  loss of both her own life and Doom’s, she finally is able to admit that life isn’t fair and that she desperately wants to live.  Park Bo Young is adorable and she fits this role well.  She is meek and loveable and I had no problem believing her emotions were genuine.  My only complaint is that, while seeing her big doe-eyes brim with tears rips at my heart, I don’t love her hysterical sob scenes.  The crying seems too forced in my opinion and I find myself more annoyed than sympathetic.

Seo In Guk as  Doom/Kim Sa Ram

Doom is technically not a human being.  He is a heavenly creature created by God to bring an end to all things at the appropriate time.  Having always seen humans at their worst, Doom has a serious distain for all people.  So when he hears Dong Kyung’s wish to destroy the world, he is thrilled.  It is exactly what he would have wished for.  But once he gets involved with Dong Kyung, he learn that humans aren’t all as bad as he thought.  And after seeing her struggle with the weight of her wish, Doom realizes that his death is the only way to relieve her pain.

Doom at your Service - Full Review

Doom is cold and emotionless. Not only does he hate all people but he can’t begin to understand why God likes them at all.  Even when he finds himself relenting a bit, all he has to do is listen in to the thoughts of the people around him to confirm their selfishness.  But Dong Kyung opens his eyes to the personal side of life.  Through her, her friends, and her family, he suddenly sees the beauty of human love and relationship.  Seo In Guk has the ability to both smoulder and freeze with those eyes of his.  He plays the transformation of Doom into Sa Ram perfectly and I really enjoyed him in this role.

Things I Liked

♥ Nam Da Reum

I love Nam Da Reum.  He is definitely an up and coming young actor and it was fun to see him as the young writer/idol Park Young.  Even as a bit part, his character added a fun element to the story. Each peak into what was happening for his character was fun and his one-sided crush on Dong Kyung was sweet and not over-played.  It’s good to see him get to play his own character instead of another younger version of the star, even if the part was small.

♥ Messages

“Doom at your Service” took on some powerful themes that give the heavier moments some purpose and beauty.  Concepts of family, love, and sacrifice are sprinkled throughout the story in different ways and through various characters.  They remind us of the importance of embracing life to it’s fullest, each day, so that we aren’t left with regrets.  Being human is hard, and none of us escape without scars, but there is joy in the process of living.

♥ Second Lead Triangle

It’s unusual to give the secondary characters a love triangle, and I really loved it in this one.  Toward the middle, the lead couples’ story got a little slow, and I was happy to have the second lead love story to pick up the slack and hold my interest.  Their story was entertaining and I thought Ji Na’s chemistry with Joo Ik was amazing.  I was really rooting for Ji Na to finally get her chance at love.

Doom at your Service - Full Review

Things I Didn’t Like

Seon Kyung

I thought SF9’s Dawon did a wonderful job with the role of Dong Kyung’s younger brother.  Seon Kyung was there to support everyone else, but it would have been nice for him to have some storyline of his own.  He does open his own cafe, but even that doesn’t get any real screen time.  He played such an important role in the overall story, that I would have liked to see him get a little more individucal story time.

Uncle Kevin

I just didn’t love Uncle Kevin’s role as the big, dumb foreigner who never understood what was going on around him.  He had his moments of deep understanding and overcoming the language barrier, but for the most part his character was ridiculous.  And Aunt Soo Ja’s English didn’t seem much better.  So the two had just been living in Canada without being able to carry on more than one sentence conversations?  It just didn’t seem very realistic.

God

I really loved the way they thought outside the box by making God a sick, young girl.  But I found her character a bit unsettled.  I never understood where she was coming from or what was actually motivating her.  I feel like her character needed more focus and definition so that we could know a little bit more about what she was thinking and feeling.  That would have given her conversations with Doom some substance and made them feel less cryptic.

The Ending

Regardless of all the tears we shed along the way, “Doom at your Service” gives us a big dose of happily ever after for the ending.  Ji Na finally admits her feelings for Joo Ik and they start dating.  And it seems like she and Hyun Gyu might actually be able to be friends at some point in the future.  Uncle Kevin and Aunt Soo Ja buy their own house and plan to stay in Korea.  Seon Kyung has his own coffee shop.  God is healthy enough to go back to school and live her human life.  And Sa Ram is now a normal human who gets to work saving people as a doctor instead of killing them as Doom.  Dong Kyung is also healthy again and she and Sa Ram are happy and in love.  All is right with the world and life is blossoming in the heavenly realms.

Should I Watch

Doom at your Service - Unspoiled Review

“Doom at your Service” is an intriguing story with a sweet romance.  It’s definitely not the kind of drama that you can say you have seen this plot a hundred times before.  But it is surprisingly heavy for a fantasy genre show.  Even when they are being cute and sweet, there is an overriding feeling of impending, well…Doom.  So if you  are looking for a light, easy love story, don’t let the romance part of this drama fool you.  It’s not always light and fun.  There are plenty of  tears to go with the laughter during the course of this one.  There are times when the deeper plot of God’s role and Doom’s purpose in it gets a bit confusing and non-sensical.  So if you like your plots tidy and perfectly defined, this one probably won’t be to your liking.  But the cast is great and the message is powerful.  I give “Doom at your Service” an 8 out of 10 ramen.

The Leads

River Where the Moon Rises - Full Review
River Where the Moon Rises

Kim So Hyun as Pyeong Gang/Yeom Ga Jin/Queen Yeon

As a child, Pyeong Gang is somehow seperated from her parents and loses any memory of who she was.  Taken in by a band of assassins, she is trained to fight and survive.  But when she is sent to kill the King, she suddenly regains her memory and realizes she is actually this man’s daughter; the Princess.  Unready to face everything this discovery means for her future, she runs away and hides in a “ghost village” where she vows to settle down and live a simple life among these good people.  She also begins to fall in love with On Dal, the man who brought her to the village in the first place.  Eventually fate intercedes and she is forced to reveal her true identity and return to the palace.  Unwilling to face it all alone, she tells the court that she and Dal are married.  Together, the couple take on the role of military leaders for the King.  But juggling love, palace intrigue, and military campaigns begins to take it’s toll, and Ga Jin is forced to make some important choices about what is really important to her.

River Where the Moon Rises - Full Review

Yeom Ga Jin is strong-willed and determined to be successful in all she does.  She is a warrior who wants it all and since she was young, she believed that she could one day rule as Queen.  When she first meets Dal, she believes that she can lay down her sword and live the life of a farmer, but the tendencies of a warrior are too deeply ingrained to be ignored for long.  I loved Kim So Hyun as the warrior princess.  She is strong in battle and fierce in justice, with just a touch of insecurity hidden deep under the surface which, comes from being a female in a male dominated society.

Na In Woo as  On Dal

On Dal is the son of General On Hyeop.  His father ruled and protected the Sunno Region until he was falsely accused of treason and killed.  Since then, Dal has lived with his nanny in the “ghost village” in the mountains, where people come to hide from the rest their true identities.  He is happy with his simple life until a beautiful stranger stumbles into his world and turns everything upside-now.  Now his life’s goal is keeping her safe at all costs.  Even if her violent lifestyle eats away at his own peace of mind.

River Where the Moon Rises - Full Review

On Dal is a beautiful character.  He is innocent and loving.  The tranformation from simple country boy to trained military leader, and the pain that caused him emotionally, was very well-done.   Na In Woo was a great choice for this role, even if he was their second choice.  There was a depth to his character’s development that felt very natural and his motivations always made sense.

Lee Ji Hoon as Go Geon

General Go Geon is the son of an influential politician.  Before the princess lost her memory and left the palace, Geon was her military instructor.  He has loved the princess since they were both young and vowed to always protect her.  But when she returns with Dal Geon becomes jealous and greedy.

Choi Yoo Hwa as Hae Mo Yong

Hae Mo Yong is the adopted daughter of one of the most powerful politicians.  She is a influential merchant and herbalist but she is

also a spy for the Silla Tribe.  She falls in love with Go Geon and will do whatever it takes to win his heart away from the princess.

Hwang Young Hee as Lady Sa

Lady Sa has been Dal’s nanny since he was a young boy.  After the death of his father, she burns her own eyes so that she and Dal can go into hiding without anyone guessing who they are.  Without her eye sight, Dal has no choice but to stay near her where she can keep him safe.  Over the years, she has become the only mother Dal has ever known.

Things I Liked

♥ Dal’s Inner-Struggle

Too often kdramas romanticize the idea of changing or sacrificing for the person you love, and it’s true that can be a positive thing.  But I loved how this drama explored the idea of going against your own human nature and the emotional turmoil and trauma that can result.  Dal’s transformation from a soft-hearted farmer who couldn’t watch any animal suffer in pain to a blood-thirsty warrior who killed anyone who crossed his path on the battlefield was so well portrayed, and you could feel his pain and struggle.

♥ Joong Seo

Just a shout-out to the shaman.  We all love those crazy, devout monk characters with just a touch of tough love.  I loved the character of Joong Seo and I especially loved the way both of his star pupils came to have one hundred percent trust and respect for him.  Everyone should have that kind of special mentor in their lives that can teach you the skills of success and kick your butt when you need it!

♥ Romance

I enjoyed the simple romances between Dal and Ga Jin and between Poong Gae and Jin.  They didn’t need a lot of drama or to be the main focus of the story.  There was a natural realism to them that wasn’t overplayed.  Geon and Mo Yong had a much more fiery passion but I loved the easiness of the other couples.  In my opinion, they struck the perfect balance between true love and undying devotion.

Things I Didn’t Like

Crown Prince Won

We meet the Crown Prince Won at the very beginning of the drama, when he is just a young boy, and then watch him grow up throughout.  But I never felt like I had an understanding for who he was.  His character seemed vague and inconsistant, which might have been fine if he hadn’t become such a prominent role at the end, once he became king.  If he was going to play such an important role, it would have been nice to have a feeling for what kind of man and king he was.  There seemed to be plenty of screen time but no clear character development.

Kim So Hyun as Queen

Using Kim So Hyun in the roles of both Ga Jin and her deceased mother, the Queen was an interesting casting choice.  The jumps between past and present can be a little difficult to navigate to begin with, but using the same actress for both characters, especially in the beginning, when we didn’t know Ga Jin yet, was another confusing element.  I loved Kim So Hyun in her role as Ga Jin, but I didn’t fine her quite as convincing as the mature, elegant Queen.  I feel like they would have been better served to find a more mature actress to play that role instead, and leave Kim So Hyun to play the role she excelled at.

Confusing Politics

This drama has some lofty goals when painting the landscape of the political climate of  the time.  With so many factions, both around the country and under the roof of the royal palace itself, it could get confusing at times.  Especially, when those factions tended to change sides at the drop of a hat.  It was sometimes hard to keep track of who each factions members, allies, and enemies were.

The Ending

The final episodes of “River Where the Moon Rises” give us plenty of tearful moments.  Geon returns from Silla and dies saving Pyeong Gang, just as he always vowed.  Mo Yong stays with him during his final moments and he finally admits that he did love her.  Dal and Ga Jin get delayed and miss most of the fight at the fortress but the King’s army still manages to win the day.  And then, as Dal and Ga Jin arrive and share a sweet moment together, reflecting on what will be their final battle, Dal is shot and “killed”.  Moving a head a bit, we find Ga Jin and the King saying their goodbyes.  Ga Jin is leaving the palace to go back to a quiet life in the mountains alone.  The King apologizes for distrusting her and they make peace.  On her way out of the city, she runs into Mo Yong who is back running her own business again.  When Ga Jin finally gets back to the home she had shared with Dal and his mother, she finds him there, but he doesn’t know who she is.  Joong Seo is there too and he explains that he taught Dal how to enter into an unconscious state to seem dead.  While Dal had succeeded, the process left him with no memories.  Ga Jin vows to wait for him and help him remember.  And after a few failed attempts at they sit talking, Dal slowly begins to recognize her.  The drama ends with him kissing her and Ga Jin is thrilled that he finally remembers.  This last bit was kind of rushed for me, and I wish they had taken time to have Dal slowly regain his memory, but I’m glad they are together and have a happy future ahead of them.

Should I Watch

River Where the Moon Rises - Unspoiled Review

So, let’s just start with the obvious here.  This is one drama where I’m glad I waited to start watching it.  No kdrama fan can discuss this series without mentioning the drama behind the drama.  A bullying allegation against the lead actor, Ji Soo, caused him to be replaced after episode 6.  Na In Woo took his place in the role and later the earlier scenes were all reshot.  So if you didn’t watch this one as it was being released, none of this should effect your viewing experience.  But it’s hard to overlook the fact that what was going on behind the scenes seemed to take it’s toll during the middle of the drama.  It does lose some focus and drift a bit during these middle episodes.  But where “River Where the Moon Rises” stands out is in the costuming and cinematography.  The drama is absolutely beautiful on screen.  Also,   Kim So Hyun is a convincing female warrior and despite the late start, she and Na In Woo have a sweet chemistry that makes a believable love story.  I give “River Where the Moon Rises” a 7 out of 10 ramen.
