Han So Hee as Yoo Na Bi

Being betrayed by her mentor and first love, Yoo Na Bi no longer believes in true love or idealic realtionships.  She is an art student at the local university who creates beautiful sculptures and dreams of using her talents to study abroad.  But when she meets a handsome and mysterious fellow student, she can’t help but be drawn in by his charm and seductive style.  They begin a casual, undefined relationship, but Na Bi has no way of knowing if he really likes her or is just looking for a short-term fling.  And Jae Eon’s ex-girlfriend, who always seems close-at-hand isn’t making things any easier.  Now she will have to decide whether she is willing to risk following her heart and having it broken again.

Nevertheless - Full Review

Yoo Na Bi is a jaded yet surprisingly naive character.  Despite her best intentions, she falls for Jae Eon quickly and completely.  Even the safe devotion of her childhood friend, Do Hyuk, isn’t enough to sway her wandering heart.  Han So Hee plays this role well.  As the big-eyed, hopeless romantic, it’s easy to see how she got herself into this predicament.  But I found her inability to understand and be honest with herself frustrating at times.

Song Kang as Park Jae Eon

Park Jae Eon is an art student who specializes in metal sculpture.  He also has a strange obsession with butterflies.  So when he meets a beautiful fellow art student whose name literally means butterfly, he is intrigued by her.  What starts out for him as just another casual fling brings up new feelings that he isn’t used to. Emotional commitment is something he has never been good at so he is suprised when he finds himself suddenly  wanting to give it a try.  But old habits die hard and he has a long way to go if he is going to convince Na Bi that his feelings for her are sincere.

Nevertheless - Full Review

Park Jae Eon grew up as the son of an absentee mother who is a weatlthy and famous actress.  While he likely inherited his love and talent for art from her, he never got the love and support that would make him emotionally stable and mature.  As a result, Jae Eon is cold and closed off  He is popular and surrounded by friends, as long as they don’t try to get too close.  I think it is Na Bi’s vulnerability that is most attractive to him.  This was an unusal role for Song Kang and it was good to see him try something new.  But I missed his more heartfelt acting.  This character, while tragic, lacked the emotional dimension to feel relatable or generate sympathy.

Chae Jong Hyeop as Yang Do Hyuk

Yang Do Hyuk is Na Bi’s oldest friend.  They grew up together before losing contact when she moved to Seoul.  The two meet up again by chance and Do Hyuk, who never got over his first childhood crush, is hoping they can start dating.  He is a chef who is famous on Youtube and plans to reopen his family restaurant in the small seaside town where he and Na Bi were raised.

Lee Yeol Eum as Yoon Seol Ah

Yoon Seol Ah has just returned from studying abroad.  She and Jae Eon dated at one time and she has never really gotten over him.  She isn’t all pleased when she notices Jae Eon’s interest in Na Bi and she does everything she can to keep them apart.

Yang Hye Ji as Oh Bit Na

Oh Bit Na is also an art student at the university where Jae Eon and Na Bi study.  She is fiercely independant and free-spirited but she is surprised when a drunken mistake reveals her attraction to one of her closest friends.

Things I Liked

♥ Art

Using a university art school as a setting provides a great opportunity to show some beautiful and interesting art pieces.  All of the sculptures were great to look at, and even the bracelet Jae Eon made for Na Bi was unique and noteworthy.  I love when dramas use the setting to promote certain scenery and this was a perfect example of that.  I want to cry right along with Na Bi when her amazing sculpture is crushed into pieces.

♥ Nam Kyu Hyun

The character of Nam Kyu Hyun was such a great addition to this drama and I loved his relationship with Bit Na.  So I was extremely disappointed when a personal scandal halfway through the drama caused the production to team to edit his parts out.  I am not commenting on the scandal itself but only the fact that his honest and down to earth character was a welcome contrast to Jae Eon and I would have enjoyed seeing more of he and Bit Na together.

♥  Mom Backstories

I really enjoyed the way both Jae Eon and Na Bi had mothers with backstories that gave some understanding into their own emotional development.  To show glimpses of their personalities and fears through the stories of their moms made it more interesting than if they had just told us about them with no context.

Things I Didn’t Like

Yoon Seol Ah

Yoon Seol Ah was a mysterious character.  It is easy to see that she and Jae Eon had dated at one time and that she still has feelings for him.  But I couldn’t understand Jae Eon’s lingering attachment to her.  Why was he the one to take her to her doctor’s appointments?  And why does he rush to her side and put up with her obsessive personality even though there is no romantic interest in her at all?  I wanted a little more back story about how they got to where they are and what were Jae Eon’s real feelings about her.

Yang Do Hyuk

Na Bi’s treatment of Do Hyuk really bothered me.  It’s not just that she chose Jae Eon over him, although I know lots of people questioned that choice.  But this is her oldest friends who she obviously cares a lot about.  And she knew that while he is a great friend, he never made her heart flutter.  I understand that a part of her really wanted him to be the answer, but deep down she knew he wasn’t.  He was an adorable guy who deserved better.  And for those who are interested, I did hear that the original webtoon does give him a better ending.

Butterflies

Maybe this one is just me but I swear, I heard so much about those dumb butterflies that I was expecting something really spectacular.  Don’t get me wrong.  Having a whole room in your house full of trees and free-roaming butterflies is definitely eccentric, but I was expected at least a couple shots of stunning butterflies or something.  The reality was much more mundane than I had anticipated.

The Ending

So…this ending.  There are a lot of disagreements about whether or not this is a happy ending, so I will skip any classification.  Let’s just break it down.  After some panic about having to recreate Na Bi’s project we come to the end of the semester.  Sol and Ji Wan are an official campus couple and seem happier than ever.   Bit Na and Kyun Hyun are also still together and all smiles.  Later at dinner, Kyun Hyun confesses that he has liked Bit Na for years.  At the art show, everyone admires Sol and Na Bi’s art, and even the professor praises Na Bi.  Do Hyuk shows up with flowers to show his support but Na Bi keeps waiting for Jae Eon to show up.  It seems like Na Bi’s classmates are the only ones excited to see poor Do Hyuk.  When Jae Eon finally comes, he sees Do Hyuk there and tries to leave.  Na Bi pushes the flowers back into Do Hyuk’s arms to chase after him, basically making her choice obvious.  But Jae Eon is already gone.  Everyone goes out to dinner but the overwhelming couple vibe depresses Na Bi, so she ducks out and heads back to see her piece one more time.  Jae Eon is there and asks her for one more chance and after telling him how much she hates him, she agrees, even though she says she knows she will regret it.  They kiss while Jae Eon sheds tears of relief.  The final scene shows them together and smiling.  Some girls try to give Jae Eon their number but he politely refuses.  Na Bi joins him and as they walk, Na Bi spots Do Hyuk through a window.  She hesitates for just a second before walking away with Jae Eon.  And that’s the end, folks.

Should I Watch

Nevertheless - Unspoiled Review

“Nevertheless” is a modern romantic drama that is provocative and, at times, frustrating.  This is not a sweet love story full of cute, couple moments.  Instead it focuses on two young people who are on a crash course to disaster with a toxic, unhealthy relationship.  That doesn’t mean there is no chemistry, or even potential, but it’s not always easy to watch.  If you dislike manipulative male leads, you should probably just skip this one all together.  But if you are looking for a mature romantic drama with annoyingly flawed yet realistic characters, you might give it a try.   I give “Nevertheless” a 7 out of 10 ramen.

Happiness - Full Review

A mysterious virus is spreading through Seoul that turns normal people into flesh-eating monsters.  In an effort to isolate the fast-spreading disease, government officials quarantine a new, high-rise apartment building that has had multiple cases.  As stress and distrust rise, residents inside the building enter into a class war between those who live on the upper floors and have purchased their apartments and those leasing the bottom floors.  While most of those inside fight for peace and unity, a few will instigate divisiveness to protect their own, personal agendas.

Han Hyo Joo as Yoon Sae Bom

When Yoon Sae Bom is bitten by someone carrying a deadly virus, she is taken in by governement officals for observation.  But it seems like she may carry a natural antibody for the illness.  Going home to her new apartment building, she has no idea that her exposure to the disease is far from over.  After mulitiple cases break out in her apartment complex, the area is quarantined with the resident inside.  While Sae Bom and her long-time friend Jung Yi Hyun try to encourage calm cooperation, some of those trapped inside sow the seeds of fear and distrust to use it for their own gain.

Happiness - Full Review

Yoon Sae Bom is brash and spontaneous.  As a member of the Special Operation Unit Police Squad, she gets paid for her quick reactions and lack of fear.  She will selflessly protect those around her at all costs.  I loved the way her need to protect and serve in emphasized when she stepped up to befriend and take care of Seo Yoon and how she reached out to Se Hoon when everyone else just ignored him. Han Hyo Joo is great in this role.  She portrays a nonchalant confidence that is both reassuring and charming.  Her chemistry with Park Hyun Sik has a depth of sincerity that makes it seem natural and understated.

Park Hyung Sik as Jung Yi Hyun

Jung Yi Hyun meets Sae Bom when they are high school students and they have been close ever since.  He has always wanted them to start dating, so when she asks him to pose as her husband and live with her in a new apartment, he jumps at the chance.  But just after moving in, the government has to close the apartment down because of the spread of a deadly disease.  Unfortunately, his mentor, who was helping him make an arrest when the shut down started, is also stuck inside.  Together, the two try to maintain peace and order among all the residents as fear and distrust rise.

Happiness - Full Review

Jung Yi Hyun’s dreams of becoming a professional baseball player are shattered when he suffers a serious knees injury.  But as his world is falling apart, he meets a prickly detective who becomes his mentor.  Yi Hyun is loyal and quietly assured.  He wears his heart on his sleeve, especially when it comes to Sae Bom, but quickly plays it off as a joke the minute anyone confronts him about it.  I love Park Hyun Sik’s ability to play these quiet, sensitive roles.  He can melt us all with those sweet eyes and quiet reassurances.  This is his first role since coming back from military service, and I was happy to see him again.

Jo Woo Jin as Han Tae Seok

Han Tae Seok is a Lieutenant Colonel in chage of containing the virus and finding a cure.  He used to work for a pharmaceutical company and has secret knowledge of where the illness came from and how it spreads.  His wife was one of the first victims.  She is being kept alive until Tae Seok can find the antibodies needed to bring her back to normal.

Lee Joon Hyuk as Kim Jeong Gook

Kim Jeong Gook is a detective that met Sae Bom and Yi Hyun when they were in high school.  He became Yi Hyun’s mentor, and now the two of them work together.  He is a husband and father who works hard for his family.  He is trapped inside the building because he happened to be there with Yi Hyun when it was blocked off.  But he is desperate to get back home to his wife who has just received news that she has cancer.

Baek Hyun Jin as Oh Joo Hyung

Oh Joo Hyung is one of many villains in this drama, but he is the most prominent.  After Joo Hyung kills his wife, Yi Hyun is in the process of arresting him when the building goes into lockdown.  If Joo Hyung can get rid of Yi Hyun and whatever proof helped him figure out who the killer is, he can still get away with the crime.  This causes Joo Hyung to stir up any kind of trouble he can, to try to turn everyone against Yi Hyun.

Things I Liked

♥ Balance

Strangely, for a “zombie” show, “Happiness” has a great balance of elements.  The action is blended with a slow burn romance and interesting social commentary on human nature in a way that made the drama more than just a monster thriller.  For someone like me who appreciates a wide range of genre, I found this approach very appealing and I thought they handled it well.

♥ Current Events

I loved how this drama used our current issues with COVID-19 as a jumping off point to tell a story that seems interesting and relevent.  Most of us have experienced a lockdown of some kind in the last couple years, so it was easy to relate with how the characters felt and the stress they would have been under.  Strangely, it felt like a not so subtle reminder that things really could be a lot worse!

♥ Seo Yoon

Kudos to this young actress and the well-written character she played.  Seo Yoon managed to bring out the parental instinct in everyone she met, and the actress held her own with the otherwise all adult cast.  Even though she was very ill, she didn’t wallow or look for pity from others.  She jumped in to help whenever she could, but also accepted instructions to stay safely behind closed doors when it was necessary.  I  found her presence a special ray of sunshine and I looked forward to her scenes each episode.

Happiness - Full Review

Things I Didn’t Like

Fewer Group Meetings

While it was interesting to see all the residents gathered in a single place for their meetings, most meetings seemed to be a replay of those that came before.  I kind of wish some of that meeting time would have been spent on back stories for various residents.  There were so many interesting characters and I would have loved to know more about all of them.  The concept of the meetings was a good one, but it just didn’t seem to end up contributing much to the plot.

No Fear

It seemed a bit unrealistic to me that the residents were all wandering around the complex with no real fear or way to defend themselves.  I would think the majority of people would want to lock themselves inside their apartments and never come out, instead of walking the halls and standing by the doors to look outside.  I appreciate the idea that those infected are not monsters but human, and maybe the people really did see them that way but meeting in the same room with a cup full of blood to see if anyone would turn seems like asking for trouble.

Sae Bom’s Blood

So if Sae Bom’s blood contains antibodies and she knows that, wouldn’t she have tried using it to the cure the sick people they knew about?  Sae Bom has proven herself to be impulsive and self-sacrificing.  It seems hard to believe that she would have just sat quietly without trying to find a way to use her blood to help others.  I guess there would be a risk that if it didn’t work, the blood would only heighten the illness, but it seems worth a try at least once, with someone they already have contained.

Happiness- Full Review

The Ending

“Happiness” comes to a satisfying ending all around.  Sae Bom gets Seo Yoon out of the complex and reunited with her mom before going back to make sure Yi Hyun is okay. Her last task at the research center is to give Seo Yoon’s mom her final dose of the treatement. Han Tae Seok gives his wife the other treatment and turns himself in.  But thanks to Seo Yoon, he has a valuable piece of information that allows him to keep his job.  In case we have all forgotten, Soo Min was bitten quite a while ago at this point and still shows no symptoms.  In fact, he told Seo Yoon he has less “thirst”.  So although Sae Bom’s antibodies seem to be decreasing, there is someone else who has them as well.  Back at the apartments, Sae Bom finds Yi Hyun and the two get into a showdown with Andrew.  Together they manage to kill Andrew before Yi Hyun collapses as Tae Seok and the soldiers appear to move everyone out of the building.  The cleaning couple try to claim the penthouse belonged to them all along but no one believes them.  Sang Hee and Hae Sung finally get into Joo Hyung’s bit coin account, only to find out he is actually in the negative.  In the end, both Joo Hyung and Yeon Ok stand trial for their crimes.  And we find a healthy Seo Yoon playing outside and running to give Sae Bom a hug.  Yi Hyun joins them, hugging Sae Bom from behind.  The couple reminisce about last year’s lockdown.  They are still sweet and teasing as they hold hands and walk off together.

Should I Watch

Happiness - Unspoiled Review

“Happiness” was more “human” than I expected.  While there is plenty of action and some blood, it is not dark or gory.  It’s really a story of human nature and how crisis can reveal our true values and character.  This story is not deep or complicated.  The good guys are good and the bad guys are horrible.  We are meant to sit back, root for good to triumph, and enjoy the show without thinking too much.  The leads were great together and their understated chemistry really carried the series. If you are looking for an upbeat drama with some excitement and plenty of heart, this is a great choice.   I give “Happiness” a 9 out of 10 ramen.

Jeon Do Yeon as Lee Boo Jeong

Lee Boo Jeong is a 40 year old writer who recently got fired from her job, but she is hiding that fact from her family.  Secretly she has taken on a job as a private maid.  Due to a strained marriage and a nosy mother-in-law, she spends most of her free time with her aging father.  A chance encounter with one of her father’s neighbors leads her into a deep and complex relationship with a younger man.  Despite their many obvious differences, the two share a connection that brings them both comfort and strength.

Lost - Full Review

At 40, Lee Boo Jeong feels like she has failed to make anything of her life.  She lost her job, her marriage is falling apart, and she suffers from depression because of a miscarriage that left her unable to have children.  The one bright spot is a sweet and supportive father who is slowly succumbing to dementia.  Before meeting Lee Kang Jae, she had even considered suicide.  But finding someone who she could open up to and share her heart with helped her to finally reject society’s definition of success and live for her own fulfillment.  I love this character and I think Joen Do Yeon was amazing in the role.  She conveyed a depth of emotion, often with no words at all.  Seldom have I found a character more relateable or engaging and her relationship with Kang Jae was beautifully precious.

Ryu Joon Yeol as Lee Kang Jae

Lee Kang Jae has his own business as a “stand-in”.  From posing as a boyfriend to turning in someone’s resignation letter, he assumes the role for whatever he is paid to do.  A chance encounter with his neighbor’s daughter on a public bus leads to an unusual friendship.  Their relationship becomes complicated when an old friend of Kang Jae’s offers him a job digging up dirt on Boo Jeong.  But the more Kang Jae gets to know her, the more he is drawn to her.

Lost - Full Review

Lee Kang Jae has made a choice to value money over anything else in life.  His business is thriving and he has rich women showering him with expensive gifts, but he still feels empty and unfullfilled.  When he meets Boo Jeong, he sees her as a soulmate.  She is someone who understands him without judging the choices he has made.  After 5 years, Ryu Joon Yeol is back on the small screen and it was definitely worth the wait.  He is fantastic in this role and I loved his transparent portrayal of the character.  His scenes with Jeon Do Yeon were heartfelt and moving.

Lee Chang Sook is Boo Jeong’s aging father.  He lives alone and is beginning to show signs of dementia.  He makes money gathering cardboard off the streets to sell to recyclers.  Even though Boo Jeong helps support him financially, he enjoys working because it makes him feel useful and productive.

Things I Liked

♥ Cinematography

This drama felt like a 16 episode indie film, and I loved it for it.  The hushed narration, emotional music, and dark lighting created a moody vibe that fit the story perfectly.  This series was all about setting the proper tone and letting the audience become immersed in it.

♥ Boo Jeong and Her Father

For me, Boo Jeong and her father were a highlight of this story.  Their relationship was playful, accepting, and showed a sincere love that was almost tangible.  Boo Jeong never treated him like he was a burden or questioned his ability to do the things he loved.  It has been quite the year for Park In Hwan and I love the quiet wisdom he brings to all of his roles.  I looked forward to Boo Jeong’s scenes with him so much.

♥ Characters and Cast

A drama that relies so heavily on dialogue and narration depends on well-written characters and talented actors to pull it off.  Luckily, this series has that in spades.  It was a breath of fresh air to have characters who seemed so real and the actors made you understand and empathize with them in a wonderful way.  I can’t say enough about how much I enjoyed getting to know and be inspired by them.

Things I Didn’t Like

Woo Nam’s Ex

Woo Nam’s whole story is a little strange.  He just lives with Lee Soon Kyu and expects her to wait on him with no real commitment.  But the scene of his ex-wife coming over to hang out, watch tv, break a dish, and then just leave was really weird.  It seems like she is having some difficulty accepting the divorce and I get that.  But still.  Most ex-wife’s don’t come to their ex-husbands’ girlfriend’s house unannounced, just to visit.

Jung Soo

I appreciated that in the end it was obvious that Jung Soo was really broken-hearted that their relationship had come to this.  But I felt like he missed plenty of opportunities along the way to protect and encourage Boo Jeong.  First, when he refused to take her side when his mother was bullying her.  And second, when he talked so negatively about her to his co-worker.  Boo Jeong felt like her father was the only one on her side and I can’t blame her for feeling that way.

Lee Kyung Eun’s husband

Lee Kyung Eun’s husband was a beautifully written character.  I loved the empathy he showed when he cried for a fellow patient, even though he was obviously suffering so much himself.  But I would have expected a sympathetic character like that to want his wife to live the rest of her life to it’s fullest.  So leaving Kyung Eun with no answer, to feel guilt for trying to find love again seemed out of character to me.

A drama as raw and real as “Lost” would seem insincere if they gave us a neat, tidy ending with lots of perfectly tied bows.  Instead, what we get are glimmers of hope that our characters are finally on the road to happiness.  But first we have the sad death of Chang Sook.  I hate painful goodbyes, but in this case it really fit the context of the drama.  His death leads Boo Jeong and Jung Soo to finally have a real conversation about their relationship, and they realize that while they still love each other very much, they are no longer in love.  After their talk, Boo Jeong deletes all the photos and contact information for Kang Jae.  Woo Nam moves out of Soon Kyu’s house, not so they can break up, but so he can actually start dating her properly.  Min Jung makes a vague confession about wanting to make her relationship with Sun Joo official, which is enough to put a silly grin on his face.  Then a small time jump shows Min Jung working at a coffee shop where Kang Jae and Sun Joo come to visit.  She and Kang Jae have a funny exchange that shows a lighter, more playful side to Kang Jae.  Min Jung flirts with Sun Joo while exchanging payment, showing that they are indeed dating and doing well together.  As Kang Jae leaves the store, he gets a text about a star gazing event coming up in Seoul.  Next we see a confident and professional Boo Jeong meeting her old co-worker to get some free-lance work.  Noticeably missing is her wedding ring.  Her co-worker tells her that Jung Ah Ran has finally divorced that jerk and has come clean about her son in Canada.  As she catches a bus home, Boo Jeong sees a poster about the star-gazing event.  In the final scene, we see Kang Jae take a seat in the auditorium to watch the stars.  As he glances across the aisle, his eyes meet Boo Jeong’s.  They both smile and neither can look away, although neither of them seem at all surprised.  The rest is up to you, but I believe that they have a bright future together.

Lost - Unspoiled Review

Let me start by saying this drama isn’t for everyone.  It is very slow moving and covers some heavy topics like depression, abuse, and suicide.  It is character driven and the plot is moved along mostly by narration and in-depth conversations, with very little action.  But what I loved about this series were the mature, realistic characters who struggled with the kinds of problems normal people often encounter as they travel the road of life.  And for those with the patience to stick it out, the take-away message is one of hope and new beginnings.   If you like slower, more mature dramas like “My Mister” or “Should We Kiss First”, this one is definitely a must-see.   I give “Lost” an 9 out of 10 ramen.

The Story

Dr. Brain - Full Review

A brilliant neuro-scientist has spent years researching the human brain and how to transfer memories between two brains using electric stimuli.  Impatient for progress, he decides to experiment on himself, using a dead person as the second participant.  But the process reveals unexpected results when the dead person’s memories involve his own family and uncover a surprising piece of information.  Now the doctor is motivated not only by the scientific breakthroughs he has strived for, but also to solve a family mystery that could have a profound impact on his life.

The Leads

Dr. Brain - Full Review
Dr. Brain - Full Review

Lee Sun Kyun as Go Se Won

Go Se Won has spent his life researching the human brain and the way it works.  His pet project involves the ability to communicate directly from one brain to another through electronic waves.  But his reserach has been slow and his experiments on mice have met with repeated failure.  Until a mistake leads to success with one of the mice that is dead.  Egged on by this single success, Se Won decides to try it on himself instead of using more mice.  But his brain sync with a random victim in the morgue reveals a startling fact about the son he believed was dead.  Using his new-found technology to communicate with deceased people and creatures, Se Won follows a trail of surprising clues that lead him closer and closer to the truth about what happened to both his wife and son.  And as he does, his own thoughts, feelings, and behaviors become entangled with those of the people he has synced with.

Dr. Brain - Full Review

Go Se Won was always different, even as a child.  He had a driving desire to know and understand how things worked.  As a genius who struggles to understand and process human emotions, he has relied on science to help him make sense of the world around him, even in the face of shocking personal traumas.  Lee Sun Kyun is an outstanding actor and I thought he played this role well.  Playing a character without many emotions while still being able to make the audience empathize with him is not easy, but Lee Sun Kyun was able to make me sympathized with Se Won.  I liked the way Se Won’s character grew and became more emotional as he took on some of the traits of the people he had synced with.

Lee Yoo Young as Jung Jae Yi

Se Won’s wife, Jae Yi, is sure that their son is still alive, even though everyone says he was killed in a fire.  It turns out that she is right, and Dr. Myung and his gang decide to kill her to keep her quiet.  They stage her suicide, but she ends up in a coma instead of dead.  Se Won has her in the basement, where she is hooked up to machines and has a personal nurse.  When she becomes the only person who can lead him to the truth about their son’s whereabouts, Se Won decides to try a brain sync with her, even though, up until this point, it has only been successful on people who are already dead.

Dr. Brain - Full Review

Jung Jae Yi is a really interesting character because she is either in a coma or dead through the entire series.  And yet, through a series of brain syncs, we learn a lot about her character.  We find out she had made a connection with another man through their kids, and they have been spending a lot of time together.  And this leads us to learn that she has struggled with being lonely and having a husband who she loves dearly but who is emotionally unavailable.  We also find out that her death was not a suicide, but murder.  Although Lee Yoo Young has most of her scenes in small, random pieces, she played the role with an earnest sincerity.  Sadly, in the end, I didn’t really feel like I understood Jung Jae Yi or what motivated her as well as I would have like to.

Seo Ji Hye  as Lieutenant Cho

Lieutenant Cho is the police officer who is investigating the mysterious death of Lim Jun Ki.  When the trail leads her to Se Won’s wife, the two of them end up working together to try to piece together the elaborate puzzle of what happened to them.  But neither one of them are prepared for the bizarre reality of Jun Ki’s murder.

Park Hee Soon as Lee Kang Moo

Lee Kang Moo is a former detective.  He is the first dead person that Se Won syncs with.  When he shows up at Se Won’s door later, Se Won has no idea who he is or that he is really just a figment inside his own mind.  Kang Moo continues to guide and goad Se Won along the path to finding out the truth.

Lee Jae Won as Hong Nam Il

Hong Nam Il is a researcher who works closly with Se Won.  Se Won trusts him and considers him as close to a friend as he can have.  But in reality, Nam Il has been planted in his job by Dr. Myung to keep tabs on Se Won.

Things I Liked

♥ Cinematography

Apple put a lot into the production quality of this drama.  There is no denying that it looked great.  The colors, camera work and effects were all first class.  All of it came together to create a smooth and enjoyable watching experience.

♥ Lee Kang Moo

I really enjoyed the place that Lee Kang Moo holds in this story.  The slow revelation that he is actually dead and that his body was the first one used in the morgue was a fun twist that gave the drama a unique touch.  And his gritty, sarcastic character as a constant companion made a great foil to Se Won’s overly serious one.  His character was an unexpected surprise that I really enjoyed.

♥ Opening Scene

The way this opening scene sets up the rest of the drama is really well done.  It was interesting getting to see how, even as a child, Se Won understood and processed things from a very scientific and factual way.  His need to know how something worked was fascinating.  It also shows how reckless he tends to be when he is in search of answers.  This will play out again when he uses himself instead of mice to further test his experiment.  And of course, the trauma of seeing his mother’s death will further isolate him emotionally and make him easy prey for Dr. Myung.  It was much more interesting to show this scene than trying to explain it all in the process of the story.

Things I Didn’t Like

Lack of Secondary Stories

I understand that 6 episodes don’t leave a lot of room for anything outside of the main story, but it left me feeling a bit disappointed.  They introduced some interesting secondary characters, but we never find out anything about them that doesn’t somehow tie into the main story.  These side characters and their own individual stories are one of the things that make kdramas so interesting, so I missed having them.

Mika (The Cat)

Okay!  So brain syncing is already stretching things, but the brain sync with a cat was a bit much.  And when he suddenly developed “cat-like” reflexes, things just really got a bit too superhero for me.  It was just a little weird and hard to take it seriously.   Especially since he always hated that poor cat anyway!

Lim Jun Ki

Again, I know there wasn’t much time for secondary character development but Lim Jun Ki’s character was a total mystery to me.  At first, it seemed like he and Jae Yi were having an affair, but later that seemed to be a bit overstated.  He seemed interested in her, to be sure, but it didn’t seem like anything romantic had actually happened between them.  I thought he, like Nam Il, might be a plant used to lure her in.  But that also didn’t prove to be true.  So I just don’t really see the importance of his relationship with Jae Yi, outside of the clue his daughter helps provide.

Dr. Brain - Full Review

The Ending

“Dr. Brain” ends in a final showdown between Dr. Myung and Se Won.  Dr. Myung’s evil plan to implant himself into the brain of Do Yoon is finally exposed and Se Won rushes to stop it.  Se Won gets there after the process is started and has to put himself into the middle of their sync and persuade Do Yoon to come home with him.  It’s all very dramatic but Se Won succeeds.  The police, led by Lieutenant Cho, show up to clean everything up.  Dr. Myung is still alive but obviously very sick and probably near death.  A brief time jump shows Se Won and Do Yoon at Jae Yi’s gravesite but as they sit together on a nearby bench we see that Se Won can see her much like he saw Kang Moo during the other episodes.  So she is still present in his mind and he seems happy to have her there.  The final scene has Se Won putting Do Yoon to bed in their house.  When he comes out of the bedroom, he comes face to face with Dr. Myung who looks just like he did when Se Won last saw him in their sync, complete with some serious superpowers. It seems to be getting very crowded inside Se Won’s mind!  An open door for season 2 perhaps, but probably just a fun cliffhanger! And there you have it.  The end.

Should I Watch

Dr. Brain - Unspoiled Review

I am one of the lucky ones who gets Apple + with my phone service, so I decided to pop on over and give “Dr. Brain” a try.  “Dr. Brain” is a serious psychological sci-fi drama.  As a die-hard Lee Sun Kyun fan, I can honestly say the acting in this drama is stellar and visually it is amazing well produced.  But, even for sci-fi, this plot is out there, despite lengthy explanations that will try to convince the audience that it makes perfect sense.  Because the series is only 6 episodes long, there is not much filler or fluff, which is nice. But the story feels a bit scattered at times and lacks character development for any of the supporting cast.  My advice to kdrama fans is that it’s too early to include an Apple + subscription as a must have if you don’t already have one.  But if you do have a subscription and are looking for a well-made drama with an edgy sci-fi touch, this one is well worth investing the 6 episodes.  And did I mention, you get to listen to Lee Sun Kyun?  Enough said.    I give “Dr. Brain” an 8 out of 10 ramen.

The Story

Dali and the Cocky Prince - Full Review

When her father suddenly dies, Da Li inherits a struggling art museum and a mountain of debt.  One of her creditors is the uncultured and arrogant CEO of the food service conglomerate Dondon F&B.  While the CEO doesn’t know anything about art, he does know how to make money.  In order to guard his investment, he offers to step in and help turn the gallery into a lucrative “business”.

Park Gyu Young as Kim Da Li

Growing up as a pampered daughter of an art gallery owner, Kim Da Li has spent her life travelling the world to study art.  Her father’s sudden death reveals that the gallery is barely holding on and drowning in debt.  For the sake of her father’s legacy and the staff who have given their love and loyalty to the gallery, Da Li is determined to find a way to save it.  But it seems like someone is working against her to make sure they have to close their doors forever, and the problems may have started before her father’s death.  To save everything and restore her family’s honor, she needs to figure out who her enemies are and why they are doing it.

Dali and the Cocky Prince - Full Review

Kim Da Li has lived a sheltered life.  She is a free spirit who is honest and open-minded.  Money is something that she has never had to worry about.  But stepping in to take her father’s place may be the biggest challenge she has ever had to face.  Park Gyu Young was really perfect for this role as the quirky, innocent art curator.  Her character was a joyful breath of fresh air, and I really enjoyed watching her step up and deal with her difficulties head on.

Kim Min Jae as Jin Moo Hak

Dondon F&B grew from a small market cafe into a major food service conglomerate.  As the CEO, Jin Moo Hak learned how to make and value money.  So when he finds out the art gallery owner he lent money to has passed away, he is determined to get the money back no matter what.  Seeing that the owner’s daughter is financially inexperienced, he volunteers to step in and help her get the gallery back on its feet to protect his investment.  But he may have more personal reasons for wanting to help her.

Dali and the Cocky Prince - Full Review

Jin Moo Hak is bold and arrogant but he is also hard-working and sincere.  He has worked hard to get where he is in life and he never takes anything for granted.  It was so delightful to see Kim Min Jae in such a playful and fun role.  He brought plenty of life and depth to this silly character and I really enjoyed it.  He is charming and the light-hearted chemistry he has with Park Gyu Young is fresh and sweet.

Kwon Yul  as Jang Tae Jin

Jang Tae Jin was once engaged to Da Li, but broke up with her when he found out she had been adopted.  Even so, he has always planned to win her back once his success was secure.  Now that her father is gone, it seems like the perfect time to rekindle their romance, but she isn’t ready to forgive him and her heart may already belong to someone else.

Hwang Hee as Joo Won Tak

Joo Won Tak is a rough-around-the-edges detective.  After a troubled adolescence, Da Li’s father, Kim Nak Cheon, takes him under his wing and accepts him as part of their family.  Won Tak regrets that while Nak Cheon was alive, he never told him how grateful he was.  Won Tak has always had a crush on Da Li but he has never told her how he feels, and she has always treated him more like a brother than a potential love interest.

Yeonwoo as Ahn Chak Hee

Ahn Chak Hee has known Moo Hak since their families set them up on a blind date.  For the sake of her pride, she pretended to be uninterested in him, but she continues to call him for lunch dates and emotional support.  Unfortunately for her, Moo Hak has never been interested in her and once he meets Da Li, Chak Hee really doesn’t stand a chance.

Things I Liked

♥ Music

The OST for this drama is as quirky as the characters and story itself.  Its fun when the music is such a natural extension of the general mood and theme of the series and this one did it perfectly.  While the music never took your attention away from the scenes, it definitely did it’s part to promote the feelings being conveyed.  A more subtle soundtrack would have been overshadowed by the big personality of this show, but instead these songs provided the perfect compliment to it.

♥ Secretary

I’ve got to hand it to Hwang Bo Ra for her fun interpretation of Secretary Yeo. Her character was original and larger than life, but she was also loyal and had plenty of heart, which made her so likeable.  Dialing back any temptation to overplay this character, Hwang Bo Ra brought just enough understated comedy to make the part memorable and fun.

♥ Costumes

I loved the charming touch that the clothing brought to this drama.  The stylists definitely deserve a shout out for creating such a fun and unique look and flavor.  Both Moo Hak and Da Li have a bold sense of style that reflects their characters well.  I always looked forward to seeing what crazy outfits would come next.

Dali and the Cocky Prince - Full Review

Things I Didn’t Like

Tae Jin is Delusional

Seriously!  What is the matter with Tae Jin?  After breaking up with Da Li because he found out she was adopted, does he really believe she will ever come back to him like nothing ever happened?  And really, he isn’t trying that hard.  He just believes she won’t be able to help but fall at his feet because he has become a successful business man.  Did he ever really know her?  It doesn’t seem like the kind of thing Da Li has ever considered very important.  I just can’t believe his nerve!

A Bit of Overacting

While I loved the acting on the part of the leads, and I did appreciate that most of the humor didn’t go too over the top, there were times when the supporting cast got a bit shouty with their lines.  The story didn’t seem to warrant the intensity that characters like Moo Hak’s father brought into some of the scenes.  Luckily, it wasn’t the norm so I didn’t get too annoyed by it, but there were a few moments when I felt like their reactions were a bit much.

Uncle Hong Chun

And Tae Jin isn’t the only guy who totally patronizes poor Da Li.  Her Uncle, Hong Chum is quite the piece of work.  After abandoning his own son, he shows up to shame Da Li just because she was adopted.  And then, when he finds a way to cling to Tae Jin’s bootstraps, he begs her to do the right thing for their family reputation.  Once you try to kick someone out of the family, you kind of lose your leverage to say “do it for the sake of us;  your family”.

Dali and the Cocky Prince - Full Review

The Ending

For the ending, “Dali and the Cocky Prince” really just focused on the lead couple.  Moo Hak is in the hospital recovering from being stabbed with Da Li at his side.  We do find out that the truth about Nak Cheon’s death comes out, and after a year’s time jump we get an update on our villains.  While An Sang Tae does serve time for his crime, Tae Jin is only asked to step down from his position as CEO.  Chak Hee has taken over Won Tak’s apartment on the roof and she and Won Tak seem to have some romantic sparks.  Now that the gallery had been cleared of illegal activities, the artists are coming back to participate in shows and it seems like the business, with Da Li at the helm, is gaining it’s footing.  This is the second drama I have seen recently where the writers lead us to believe the leads have spent or will spend a significant amount of time apart, only to later reveal it’s been more like weeks or days.  This new troupe making fun of a time honored old troupe is clever and kind of cute.  In this case, we see that when Moo Hak’s father tells Da Li to break up with Moo Hak, she tells him she can’t.  They have been together the whole time, except for a short business trip she took to the Netherlands.  In the end, they meet at the gallery where Moo Hak proposes and she accepts.  And they lived, we can presume, happily ever after.

Dali and the Cocky Prince - Unspoiled Review

“Dali and the Cocky Prince” is a quirky rom-com with a bit of political intrigue thrown in.  I loved this drama for it’s sweet simplicity.  It’s not complex or edgy, but it tells a fun story that embraces all the levity of a good rom-com.  If you are looking for a deep plot full of unpredictable twists and turns, this is obviously not a good choice.  But this series has fun costumes, unique leads, and an engaging storyline that kept me well-invested unti the end.   I give “Dali and the Cocky Prince” an 8 out of 10 ramen.

Kim Yoo Jung  as Hong Chun Ki

As a child, Hong Chun Ki was blind, but she still dreamed of becoming a famous painter like her father.  So when she miraculously gains her eyesight, she immediately enrolls at the local art academy.  Now, after years of study, she is a talented artist who cares for her mentally ill father.  But those close to her worry that painting will destroy her mental health the same way it did her father.  A request from the King to recreate her father’s greatest piece of art and help capture the evil spirit, Ma Wang, only adds to their concern.  But when Chun Ki realizes that this project could not only save the stability of their country but also the life of the man she has loved since she was a child, she can’t refuse.

Lovers of the Red Sky - Full Review

Hong Chun Ki is passionate and determined.  Her father’s health and her own blindness left her very lonely as a child.  But one stranger’s kindness left an unforgettable mark on her heart.  When she meets him again as adults, she understands that they must be fated to to be together.  Kim Yoo Jung is well-suited for this character.  Her lively charm shines through as Chun Ki and we see the most character development in the series as Chun Ki grows as an artist and as a woman.

Ahn Hyo Seop as Ha Ram

Ha Ram comes from a family blessed by the water god.  He is chosen to take part in the royal rain ritual used to stop drought.  But when the ritual errupts into chaos, Ha Ram ends up losing his sight and being possessed by the evil spirit, Ma Wang.  While the spirit lies dormant for years, no one realizes he is there, but attempts to capture him in a divine vessel make his situation more urgent.  Now the spirit plans to fully take over Ha Ram’s mind and body so that he can rule the kingdom.  The only thing missing are his eyes, which have been given to Chun Ki.  As Ha Ram finds out about the evil that lives inside him, he is ready to sacrifice himself for the good of the kingdom.  But Chun Ki insists on finding a way to trap the spirit and free Ha Ram to live a life with her.

Lovers of the Red Sky - Full Review

Ha Ram is reserved and intelligent.  Believing that his father died at the hands of the royal family, he has lived his life waiting for a chance to take revenge on them.  But his plans falter when he discovers that the king was as much of a victim as his father.  Ha Ram has always loved Chun Ki, but he knows that his revenge will end in his own death so he tries to keep her at a distance, for her own sake.  Lucky for him, Chun Ki doesn’t give up easily.  Ahn Hyo Seop is a good actor, but I found this particular role very flat.  There is very little character development and even the chemistry he shares with Kim Yoo Jung early in the drama seems to fizzle out as the series goes on.

Kwak Shi Yang as Prince Yi Hoo

Prince Yi Hoo is the middle son of the King.  His older brother, the Crown Prince, has been ill for years and Yi Hoo hopes to inherit the crown from his father.  Yi Hoo is responsible for helping release Ma Wang and he bears a scar from the fire that is the evil spirits mark.  Yi Hoo plans to use his connection with Ma Wang to take power and feed his greed.

Kim Kwang Gyu as Choi Won Ho

Choi Won Ho runs the art academy where Chun Ki studies.  He was friends with her father and now takes care of her, since he friend is no longer capable.  He tries to protect Chun Ki so she won’t lose her sanity to art in the same way as her father.  But his paternal instincts are no match for the stubborn young woman Chun Ki has become.

Things I Liked

♥ Guardian Spirits

I loved the character of Sam Shin and Ho Ryung.  The costumes and graphics surrounding these two characters were the strongest in the drama and their magical presence gave a good break from the main storyline.  It was also fun to watch Ho Ryung and Chun Ki form an awkward and slightly tenuous friendship.  And while Sam Shin was involved in the story from the very beginning, it was sweet to watch Ho Ryung get swept up in the human love story and try to protect the two of them.

♥ Folklore

The fantasy concept for this drama was very interesting and I liked how they were able to incorporate real traditional folklore into the story.  Each of the stories brought a new dimension to the overall plot and it was fun to learn some of the lesser known tales, like Hwacha.  I never felt like these stories were out of place within the context of the drama as a whole.

♥ Baekgyu Institute “Family”

Another friendship I enjoyed was the interaction between Chun Ki and her art academy “family”, especially Young Wook and Painter Jung.  Their familiar camaraderie was touching, and seeing how protective all of them were of Chun Ki seemed very natural.  I looked forward to the scenes where the group of them interacted together.  And the lengths that Chun Ki went to to save them from Prince Yi Hoo made perfect sense.

Things I Didn’t Like

Woman Artist

I don’t know a lot about artists during this time period, but it doesn’t take much to imagine that women artists were incredibly rare, if not unheard of.  And that would be proven by the fact that Chun Ki is the only woman in the academy or the art competition.  And yet I only heard one passing comment that anyone found it noteworthy.  That seems strange to me.  It seems like more should have been made about how rare it was for a woman to be a painter at all, let alone a “divine” painter.

Crown Prince

Okay, I really don’t understand the point of the Crown Prince in this drama at all.  We hear about him a few times and know that he is very ill.  But we never see him once they all grow up, and his place in the overall story is pretty non-existent.  The two younger princes would have been vying for the throne whether he was in the picture or not.  Actually having Lee Yul named Crown Prince earlier would have only fueled Yi Hoo’s jealousy more.  I just really hate unnecessary characters who we never really see anyway.

Blindness

The blindness element of this drama is not handled well at all.  First of all, for someone who spent some of the formative years of her life blind, Chun Ki seems strangely clumsy at dealing with Ha Ram’s lack of sight.  In both speech and actions, she seems to forget that sight isn’t something to be taken for granted.  But maybe that is partly because Ha Ram didn’t really act like someone who couldn’t see.  Wandering the town alone and moonlight horseback riding were treated as normal occurences.  While he would have learned to live without sight, there should have still been times when certain tasks would have required some extra effort.

The Ending

“Lovers of the Red Sky” ends with a hard-fought happily ever after.  Ha Ram shows up at the sealing ceremony but Ma Wang has managed to take full power over him.  As Chun Ki rushes to put the finishing touches on the painting, the demon confronts her and takes back his eyes, leaving her blind once again.  With the help of Hwacha and her father, she finishes the painting, but Ma Wang seems impossible to beat, now that he has his eyes again.  In the end, the spirit is defeated, but it cost the lives of both Mi Soo the shaman and Sam Shin.  Flash forward five years, to Ha Ram and Chun Ki’s birthday.  They are living in the country with their young son.  The Baekgyu artists and the now Crown Prince, Lee Yul, make the trip to visit.  Everyone is pretty much the same with the exception of Lee Yul and Painter Jung’s promotions.  Ha Ram and Chun Ki make a trip back to the peach orchard for a romantic birthday date, which ends once again with them running away from the angry owner.  In a strange last scene, we see Prince Yi Hoo, who is still alive and in prison, leading a coup against Lee Yul and his supporters.  The final credits roll as we see a bloody fight breaking out in the palace.

Lovers of the Red Sky - Unspoiled Review

“Lovers of the Red Sky” is a fantasy historical romance with a unique concept.  This series leans heavily into the magical fairytale style elements, so if you like your historical dramas to be full of true historical events and famous figures, you may be looking in the wrong place.   The plot is largely predictable, so don’t expect any huge surprises.  The love story is sweet and the supporting cast is strong.  As is often the case with fantasy dramas, there are points where the storyline defies logic or the rules suddenly change without explanation.  Repetition and flashbacks also drag down the tempo at times.  But if you are looking for a fun tale of good vs. evil and true love in a historical setting,  this one is not without it’s charms. I give “Lovers of the Red Sky” a 7 out of 10 ramen.

Seo Hyun Jin  as Kang Da Jung

Working as a manager for a big-name hotel, Kang Da Jung doesn’t have much time for a social life.  One day a mysterious stranger takes an unexpected interest in her, but then just as suddenly dies, leaving her a final present that ties back to her own painful past.  As she tries to move on from this confusing and painful event, she befriends a psychiatrist who has an office in the building where she lives.  Together they try to uncover the truth behind the stranger’s death and find that it links to both of their childhoods.

You Are My Spring - Full Review

Kang Da Jung is quiet and reserved.  Watching her father abuse her mother for years when she was a child has made her distrust love and marriage.  But as she grows closer to Joo Young Do, his willingness to listen and give heartfelt advise helps her finally put all of her past doubts behind her and embrace life and love.  Seo Hyun Jin plays these kinds of vulnerable and emotion roles well, and I always enjoy her depth of character.  The subtle, natural chemistry she has with Kim Dong Wook made this couple so pleasant to watch and I appreciated their innocent relationship.

Kim Dong Wook as Joo Young Do

As a psychiatrist with his own private clinic, Joo Young Do is plenty busy, but he keeps finding himself crossing paths with the woman who lives above his office.  He is instantly attracted to her, and when a strange man begins to follow her around he is both jealous and concerned for her well-being.  The man’s sudden suicide is strangely suspicous and Young Do can’t help questioning what really happened to him.  He and Da Jung have an opportunity to grow closer as they try to piece together the life and death of  Chae Jun, but Young Do has a secret that could make any long-term relationships impossible.

You Are My Spring - Full Review

Joo Young Do takes pride in being a caring doctor who listens to patients and helps them forgive themselves for their past mistakes.  But he carries his own guilt of not being able to save his sick brother’s life or comfort his mother in her grief.  As he spends time with Da Jung, she helps him learn to forgive himself and find peace and healing.   Kim Dong Wook was wonderful as the kind-hearted doctor with a wounded heart, both literally and figuratively.  He handled the role with a quiet dignity that made his character sweet and likeable.

Yoon Park as Chae Jun/Choi Jung Min

Chae Jun and Choi Jung Min are twins who were given up for adoption as children.  While Chae Jun stayed in Korea and lived a difficult and troubled life, Choi Jung was sent to American where he became Dr. Ian Chase.  Following Jun’s suicide, Ian Chase shows up back in Korea to operate on a rich, influential patient.  But we soon find out that the lives of Jun and Ian are so tightly intertwined that no one really knows who did what.

Nam Gyu Ri as Ahn Ga Young

Ahn Ga Young is a beautiful, young actress who was once married to Young Do.  She pushes her way into Da Jung’s house and declares them best friends.  Secretly, she is dating a famous idol, but she doesn’t want it to interfere with either of their careers, although he would like to go public with their relationship.

Kim Ye Won as Park Eun Ha

Park Eun Ha has been friends with Da Jung since they were young.  Eun Ha’s father is the owner of the building where Da Jung lives, and Eun Ha runs a coffee shop on the first floor with her twin brother.  Things between Da Jung and Eun Ha become complicated when Eun Ha starts dating Da Jung’s brother.

Things I Liked

♥ Ahn Ga Young

I loved the character of Ahn Ga Young.  She manages to be totally self absorbed and yet innocent enough to still be likeable.   Her desire to be loved and understood showed a sweet vulnerablility and I loved how she just decided Da Jung and Eun Ha were her new besties.  I also thought her romance with Patrick was very cute.  They made a perfect couple and it made sense that he is younger since she is still finding herself.

♥ Da Jung’s Reaction

The scenes where Da Jung found out that Eun Ha and Tae Jung were dating and confronted them were the best part of the finale.  As someone who considers both of them like siblings, it’s easy to understand her speechless disapproval, but it was also obvious that she understood, on some level, how good they could be for each other.  It was a fun way to round out Eun Ha and Tae Jung’s story, and it only made me sad that we didn’t get to enjoy a similar reaction from Da Jungs mom!

♥ Heo Yu Kyung

Heo Yu Kyung provides some wonderful moments of humor in this drama.  From cussing out the guests on the telephone to her silly English mistakes, I found her character endearing and fun.  It’s true that her character has no real impact on the story at all, but her character brought me plenty of giggles and I appreciate her for that.

Things I Didn’t Like

Twin Story

Initially I was intrigued with the idea of combining a slow burn romance with a mystery thriller, but in the end it didn’t really work for me.  The mystery elements were sporadic at best, and the lack of context made it really hard to keep track of which twin did what.  I actually think the foundation of a really cool mystery drama where there, but it should have had it’s own show where they could have more story development.  There was so little crossover between the two plots that it made it feel very disjointed, and truthfully I would have rather used the time spent on the crime plot to develop some of the supporting character stories more.

Dropped Romances

It’s not uncommon for a drama to leave a potential romance on the table, but I count no less than three relationships in this series that are at least hinted at but never materialize.  First is Da Jung’s mother, Mi Ran and her sweet mystery man.  It seemed like she had finally met the kind of guy she deserved, with his thoughtful presents and caring attention.  And then he is never mentioned again.  Second is Ha Neul and Jin Ho, the trainer.  At some point, Ha Neul needs to give up on Eun Ha, who obviously has given her heart to someone else.  And Jin Ho was so honest about her interest in him.  He could have at least given her a chance.  And lastly, was the more suble interest Ah Ri showed in her boss Chul Do.  All of these storyline showed some promise and it’s too bad none were explored.

Vice Chairwoman

Building on my complaint about the mystery crime story development, they built up the story about the Vice Chairwoman threatening Dr. Chase like it was going to have some significant consequences.  But despite her ominous threat, we don’t see anything happen.  She seems to have had something on Dr. Chase to make him do what she wants but we never really find out anything about their connection, their history, or if she takes revenge.  Her whole story seems patchy and irrelevant.

You Are My Spring - Full Review

The Ending

“You Are My Spring” bows out quietly with an understated ending that manages to wrap up most of the main stories but leaves plenty of loose ends along the way.  Ian finally confesses all his crimes to the police, but since none of them can actually be tried, he is set free.  Unfortunately for him, his own guilt doesn’t let him off quite so easily.  In one final scene of him, we see that he is receiving therapy because he is tormented by nightmares and unable to work.  Da Jung finds out that Eun Ha and Tae Jung are dating and is slowly coming to terms with it.  Da Jung and Young Do have committed to staying together, regardless of what the future might hold.  And after a bit of hazing, Da Jung’s mother also gave them her blessing.  The last scene of the drama shows Da Jung waiting for Young Do to finish work.  She walks to the place directly above his desk and begins jumping to get his attention, which works well.  He closes the office and walks up to the roof where the two of them talk about their day.  A voice over talks about the importance of love and healing as the couple giggle suggestively and run inside.

You Are My Spring - Unspoiled Review

“You Are My Spring” is a unique combination of slow burn romance and psychological crime.  If you are looking for an emotional romance with some interesting mystery on the side, this is a good fit.  But if you want an exciting crime thriller, you will probably be bored with this. There are times, especially toward the middle of the series, where the detective story is all but forgotten.  In the end, this is a beautiful love story that is heavily conversation driven and focuses on overcoming the pain of the past.   I give “You Are My Spring” an 8 out of 10 ramen.

Twenty-five years ago, a government funded experiment sought to isolate the genetic marker for psychopathic tendencies by testing unborn children.  Now, a chain of serial killings is striking fear in the hearts of the nation and the cases seem to link back to the original experiments.  A young, caring police officer and a veteran detective are determined to solve the cases and arrest the killer, but the murders may have more of  a personal effect on them than they ever imagined.

Lee Seung Gi  as Jung Ba Reum

A kind-hearted police officer with a love of animals and a desire to protect those around him, Jung Ba Reum is liked by everyone.  After taking an interest in a serial killer case, he begins working with Detective Ko to solve the puzzling crime and find the murderer.  But in the process of capturing the culprit, Ba Reum receives a brain injury that requires surgery and causes him to lose his memory.  When strange thoughts and memories begin coming back to him, he is shocked to find out that in order to save his life, doctors transplanted a portion of the killers brain into his head.  And the surprises don’t end there.  As his memories return and he tries to sort through which ones are his and which are Sung Yo Han’s, he discovers that he is not the person he believed he was.

Mouse - Full Review

Before his surgery, Jung Ba Reum was a psychopathic killer with no empathy or regret.  Growing up in a family where they only expected the worst of him did nothing to help him curb his natural tendencies, and when that family is found dead, everyone assumes he did it.  After getting a portion of Yo Han’s brain, Ba Reum experiences feelings like love and remorse for the first time.  After years of begging God to save him from himself, his prayers were answered.  But the pain of living with what he had done was far more painful than he ever expected.  Lee Seung Gi did an amazing job in this drama.  He was believeable both as the sweet, pure hearted officer and the deranged psychopath.  This more mature, serious role gave him an oportunity to really show his talent and I was impressed with his performance.  In my opinion, it was the strongest part of the whole drama.

Lee Hee Joon as Ko Moo Chi

As a young boy, Ko Moo Chi’s entire family was killed by the serial killer, Han Seo Jun.  Now, as a detective, a copy-cat has surfaced and is terrorizing the city.  Moo Chi is determined to find the killer and inflict judgement however he can.  But when the killer suddenly turns up dead, something still seems off.  And the more he learns, the more complicated things seem to get.  When all the signs start to point to the police officer who has been helping him on the case, he really hopes that he is wrong.

Mouse - Full Review

Ko Moo Chi is hot-headed and reckless.  He has lived his whole life with the guilt of knowing that his parents died trying to give him his birthday wish and his brother ended up disabled trying to save him.  His anger and resentment make him a determined detective with a chip on his shoulder.  I liked Lee Hee Joon in this role.  His strong sense of justice was relatable and well played and he and Lee Seung Gi made a great team.  From friends to enemies, their energy was dynamic and interesting.

Sung Yo Han is the son of killer Han Seo Jun.  He and Ba Reum share a connection because they were both tested for the psychopath gene before they were born.  Yo Han is the killer that Moo Chi and Ba Reum work so hard to catch, and Yo Han dies after being shot by Moo Chi in order to save Ba Reum’s life.  But after his death, additional evidence shows up to prove that he was not the cold-blooded killer that they believed.  Yo Han was also dating Hong Joo, which made Moo Chi jealous.

Park Joo Hyun as Oh Bong Yi

Oh Bong Yi is a young girl from Ba Reum’s neighborhood.  She has a crush on him and he has identified her as someone who would be easy to control, even if she found out the truth about him.  But after his surgery, Ba Reum ends up really falling in love with her.  Unfortunately, once he realizes that he was the one to kill her beloved grandmother, he knows that she will end up hurt no matter what he does.

Things I Liked

♥ Child Actors

The child actors in this drama were required to do some seriously heavy lifting and they all did an amazing job.  These roles required a maturity of emotion that must have been challenging and difficult for children so young.  I have so much respect for their acting ability and hope we will get to watch them in many more roles to come.

♥ Red Thread

I always love the red thread of fate concept and I especially loved how subtly this drama handled the theme.  It is pictured in the introduction to every episode but the concept is never forced or heavy handed.  My favorite example is the puppy.  That one pitiful creature ties together Ba Reum, Bong Yi, Yo Han and even Sung Ji Eun in a subtle way that lets you put all the pieces together for yourself.

♥ Flawed Lead

“Mouse” took a unique approach by giving us a flawed lead who gave us his unreliable account of events for the first half of the drama.  And it is an amazing testament to Lee Seung Gi’s acting skills that even after finding out what a monster he was in the beginning, I was still broken hearted to see him die in the end.  This is not a handsome hero story but it is a story of the kind of redemption and grace that can come to even the most flawed of humans.

Things I Didn’t Like

Oz

I just didn’t really think the whole OZ storyline was necessary.  The story was full enough and they could have easily left it with Doctor Daniel and Han Seo Jun’s experiments.  The members of OZ didn’t contribute that much to the overall plot and I didn’t find their portion of the story that interesting.  In a drama already packed with characters and themes, I feel like this one could have been left out and no one would have missed much.

Trading Kids

The whole idea that the moms traded babies because then they would somehow be able to kill him if they needed to was kind of ridiculous to me.  A child you raise doesn’t have to be your biological child for you to love him.  And it ended up being so unfair to Yo Han.  He ended up not even being a psychopath, but he was raised with the trauma of having a father who is a known murder and a mother who never let herself love him just in case.  The situation accomplished nothing but negative issues.

Psychopaths

I know this is just a drama, not a documentary, and fiction can either simplify or stretch the truth as it sees fit, but I didn’t like the way this drama represented psychopaths.  First, not all murderers are psychopaths, so ridding the world of babies with that gene does not magically create a safe existence free from crime and killing.  And second, not all psychopaths kill people.  There are enough misconceptions about these kinds of mental illnesses and I feel like we should be careful about over-generalizing.

The Ending

As expected for a drama so dark, there isn’t much happily ever after in this one, although they do a fairly good job of trying to tie up all those crazy loose ends.  This is a long one, so hold onto your seats.  In the end, all the members of OZ, plus their fearless leader, Choi Young Shin are arrested for their crimes.  So are Ba Reum and Hong Joo.  With those arrests, Yo Han’s name is finally officially cleared of any wrong-doing.  6 months later, Ba Reum is suffering terrible physical pain because of his brain surgery and emotional pain, now that he remembers all the crimes he has committed.  In a final act of revenge, he kills Han Seo Jun for Moo Chi.  His final scene is a vision of him and his younger self in a church.  He tells the child that his prayers have been answered and he is no longer a monster.  Then Ba Reum bows his head and dies.  Three years later, Choi Young Shin receives a pardon from the Blue House and is set free, but she is killed on the drive back into the city.  Hong Joo’s parents have been raising her son while she served her time, but now she is finally free.  Moo Chi has left the department to sell eggs and support Bong Yi while she goes to college.  He goes to put a marker on Ba Reum’s grave behind the prison, so he seems to have finally made his peace.  The series ends with a dinner party at Bong Yi’s house that tries to add some levity to the final moments, but seems surprisingly superficial and heavy.  We do get a short scene where Moo Chi and Hong Joo talk and he apologizes for his part in wrongly accusing Yo Han.  After the credits we get two bonus scenes.  One shows the mouse from Han Seo Jun’s original experiment miraculously coming back alive.  And the other shows a new doctor performing a brain transplant, so apparently this research didn’t die with Han Seo Jun after all.  While these scenes could open the door for a season two, I suspect they are just a reminder that corruption and evil still live on.

Mouse - Unspoiled Review

Well, in a year full of dark, intense crime dramas, “Mouse” fits right in.  This drama is a gruesome pyschological thriller that is purposefully complex and confusing.  It will require your full attention for all 20 episodes, and even then, the large cast list featuring several murderers makes it difficult to keep all the names and characters straight. If you are sensitive to violence or depressing stories, this one probably isn’t for you.  However, if you are looking for an exciting roller coaster thriller with an outstanding cast and intricate sci-fi crime story that will keep you guessing right up until the end, “Mouse” may be just the ticket.     I give “Mouse” an 8 out of 10 ramen.

Monthly Magazine Home - Full Review

Kim Ji Suk  as Yoo Ja Sung

Yoo Ja Sung worked his way up from nothing to become a wealthy and famous real estate mogul.  But in such a busy career, he has never taken the time to date or settle down and build a real home.  When he hires a new personal PR writer who dreams of the warmth of hearth and home, he is challenged to see life from a new, more personal, perspective.

Monthly Magazine Home - Full Review

Yoo Ja Sung is selfish and rude, but he also has an innocent charm that becomes more appararant as the drama goes along.  Glimpses into his long-time relationship with Shin Gyeom shows that he is loyal and affectionate with those he is close to.  Kim Ji Suk has excellent comedic timing and does this kind of exagerated humor well.  This role is perfect for his style of acting and he handled it well, but I would have liked to see more serious character development, as well.  Both the  character of Ja Sung and the actor Kim Ji Suk had the potential for more depth and emotion.

Jung So Min as Na Young Won

Na Young Won is a struggling writer looking for work until a former co-worker calls her about a job at her magazine.  What she doesn’t tell her is that her new boss is an unreasonable perfectionist who is impossible to work with.  He is also the one who evicted her from her last apartment.  But Young Won is determined to make this job work, no matter how difficult her boss is.  And the more time she spends with him, the more she realizes that Ja Sung is kinder than most people think. While she hopes to learn from his real estate expertise, she is hoping to show him there is more to owning a home than making a profit.

Monthly Magazine Home - Full Review

Na Young Won’s life fell apart when her parents got scammed and lost the chance to finally own a home of their own.  Carrying that scar through life, she writes a blog about the value of making a home where you can find comfort and security.   Although Ja Sung’s methods lack warmth and emotion, she understands that his knowledge is valuable and she appreciates him for that.  Jung So Min is one of my favorite actresses, and part of why I was so excited to watch this drama, but I don’t feel like this role fit her style.  As an actress, her strength lies in emotion and deep character development, and she seemed almost out of place in this silly, over the top style of comedy.

Supporting Characters

Monthly Magazine Home - Full Review

Jung Gun Joo as Shin Gyeom

Shin Gyeom has known Ja Sung since Ja Sung tutored him in high school.  He is a talented photographer from a rich family who is trying to find his own path through life.  Ja Sung hires him to take pictures for the magazine and Gyeom agrees to work for him until he decides to take off on his next adventure.  Gyeom has a crush on Young Won and is heart-broken when he finds out that she and Ja Sung have feelings for each other.

Kim Won Hae as Choi Go

Choi Go is the editor-in-chief at Monthly House.  He has worked for the company for years and helps the business run smoothly.  He is married and spends his life catering to the needs of his kids and his demanding wife.  He lives in an apartment that is supposed to be redeveloped, but the project keeps getting put on hold while the residents are stuck waiting for better living conditions.

Chae Jung An as Yeo Eui Joo

Yeo Eui Joo is an editor at Mothly House.  She has a rich father who abandoned her for a younger wife, which makes her distrustful of all men.  She has vowed that she will never get married.  But when she discovers she has feelings for her co-worker, Nam Sang Soon, she begins to re-examine her life decisions.

Things I Liked

♥ Voiceovers

Though a bit out of place for the tone of the rest of the drama, I enjoyed the voiceovers that reflected on the idea of the value of a home from Young Won’s perspective.  These gave a warm, personal touch to the episodes and gave a heart-warming message.  The contrast between a house and a home is an interesting over-arching theme for this drama, and the voiceovers did a nice job of highlighting this.

♥ Yeo Eui Joo

Yeo Eui Joon probably had the best character development in this whole drama.  In the beginning, she is portrayed as obsessed with money and having an affair with an older rich man, who actually turns out to be her father.  As the story goes on, and the truth is revealed, we learn that there is much more to her story than the quick conclusion we are led to believe.  I admit that I strongly disliked her character through the first half and was pleasantly surprised to find her much more endearing as it went on.

♥ Ja Sung and Gyeom

I enjoyed the sweet, brother-like affection between Gyeom and Ja Sung.  Their quiet support for each other is touching with just enough awkwardness to make it realistic.  Maybe the fact that this is the only understated relationship in the whole drama made it stand out even more, but I looked forward to their heart to heart moments.

Things I Didn’t Like

Over the Top

Pretty much everthing about this drama was over the top and a bit tiresome at times.  From the acting, to the humor, and even the more serious emotional scenes; all of them were taken to the extreme.  As someone who embraces subtlety in my dramas, this definitely got irritating.  Maybe comedy fans liked these moments more than me, but I think it could have been toned way down.

STOP

Okay, I just have to say, please stop with the “STOP”.  This ridiculous tagline was silly from the beginning, but by the end, I really wanted to scream anytime anyone used it.  Again, a little restraint would have made it only vaguely frustrating, but the repetitive use of it was enough to drive me crazy.

Kye Joo Hee

Has there even been a more invisible character than Kye Joo Hee?  The masked intern drifts through this drama with no real character development.  The only thing we find out about her personally is that she lives in a basement apartment.  While she wanders around delivering gifts and messages for her shy co-worker, we see no trace of a personality or storyline.  It just seems a shame to introduce a character that has no real purpose or role.  At least she finally becomes an editor in the end.  I guess that is something.

The Ending

“Monthly Magazine Home” comes in for a messy and unsatifying ending that left many viewers frustrated.  Young Won finally finds her father, which is great, until she realizes he is the one who scammed Ja Sung out of all his money years before.  So she plans a final date for them, and when the date is finished she confesses everything to Ja Sung and breaks up with him.  Then she disappears for 3 years.   Though most of the supporting characters did get their happy ever afters.  After a 3 month time jump, Sang Soon and Eui Joo got their dream wedding. And Eui Joo even got to invite her father, so their relationship seems to be on the mend.  Gyeom is finally moving on to pursue his dream of studying Fine Arts, although he has given up studying abroad to stay close to home.  Chan will be taking his place as head photographer, and he and Mi Ra seem to be heading toward a romantic relationship.  A final 3 year jump shows us that Editor Choi’s son has graduated and their home is finally going to be re-developed.  And now back to our leads.  Ja Sung sees a Youtuber who he suspects is Young Won.  He goes to find her and is disappointed when it turns out to be someone else.  But after forgetting his keys, he goes back to discover Young Won there after all.  The two take a walk, talking casually as she shows him the home she had built.  The drama ends on a voice-over asking viewers how they like their home.  There is no clear indication of what the future holds for our leads.  Whether friends or lovers, I guess the ending is up to your imagination.

Should I Watch

Monthly Magazine Home - Unspoiled Review

“Monthly Magazine Home” is a sweet romantic comedy about first love and the importance of having a home.  Unlike the norm for the genre,  this one leans much more heavily toward the comedy.  Exagerrated humor and acting combine with a simple and fairly predictable plot to make this a great drama if you are looking for something light as a filler.  But don’t expect anything particularly deep or unique.  And if you don’t enjoy over the top comedy and acting, I would skip this one.    I give “Monthly Magazine Home” an 6 out of 10 ramen.
