The Story

May I Help You - Full Review

A new funeral director has magical hands that will bring her clients back to life long enough to ask one final favor before they leave their loved ones.  If she can grant 21 wishes, she will fulfill her task and her hands will lose their magical ability.  When a young man who runs an errand company with his uncle accidentally finds out about her secret ability, she enlists his help in granting wishes.  Along the way, they will each find healing for their own personal loss and purpose for their futures.

May I Help You - Full Review

Lee Hye Ri as Baek Dong Joo

Baek Dong Joo wants a job that doesn’t require any special skills, so she applies to be a Funeral Director.  But when she touches her first corpse, the boy comes to life and begs her to help him.  Her uncle, who is a priest, explains that she has the homework of helping fulfill the final wishes of 21 people before this special magic power will go away.  The only problem is that her dad still thinks she is studying for the civil service exam.  So the secret remains between her and her uncle, until a young man who owns an errand business accidentally finds out.  Thankful for someone to help her, she begins to lean on him more and more.  But when she finds out there is a connection between him and her first funeral, she worries that he may never forgive her.

May I Help You - Full Review

Baek Dong Joo is bright and optimistic.  Once she gets over the fear, she loves creating a happy and healing atmosphere for the people she will be meeting in the coffin room.  Lee Hye Ri has a hilarious way of adding silly over-exuberance to her roles.  While it is true that many of her characters have the same, silly edge, I think she continues to grow as an actress.  There is something to be said for the fact that her loud clumsiness makes me smile every time.

Lee Jun Young as Kim Tae Hee

Kim Tae Hee was a successful doctor before his little brother, Jun Ho, was killed in a tragic traffic accident.  After that, he decides to help his uncle run his errand business.  The stress-free environment of doing small daily jobs gives him time to heal and process his loss.  But when he meets Dong Joo and learns about what she is doing for people, he jumps in to help her.  And slowly he begins to remember how healing it can be to help others heal.  And as his feelings for Dong Joo grow, he begins to allow himself to be happy again and starts to dream of a future.

May I Help You - Full Review

Kim Tae Hee begins this drama as someone who has lost the ability to feel anything at all.  His days go on with no emotion or desire.  But meeting Dong Joo changes all that.  Now he has to let go of his guilt and allow himself to live a full life, as his brother would have wanted him to.  I recently said that I was concerned Lee Jun Young was being boxed into playing the same idol character in all his dramas.  So I was thrilled to see him tackle a more complex, mature role.  While his acting is still developing, I can see his improvement and I hope he will continue to grow and challenge himself.

Supporting Characters

May I Help You - Full Review

Song Deok Ho as Seo Hae Ahn

Seo Hae Ahn is a young police officer who lives in Vincent’s building.  He moved to Seoul from a small town and has no other friends or family.  At least that is what he says.  But Hae Ahn ends up being the hidden “villain” of this drama.  His brother was responsible for Tae Hee’s brother’s death, and Hae Ahn leaves him there to die instead of trying to save Jun Ho.  Hae Ahn has a crush on Dong Joo, but she only sees him as a friend.

Lee Kyu Han as Vincent

Vincent is Dong Joo’s uncle.  He is a priest who was raised by Dong Joo’s father, who is his brother-in-law.  He is the only one who knows about Dong Joo’s “homework” at the Funeral Home.  He keeps her secret and offers his support whenever Dong Joo needs it, whether that entails a strong shoulder to lean on or just a strong can of soju.

Oh Dae Hwan as Michael

Michael or Hyang Bok is Tae Hee’s uncle.  He is the one who started the errand business, and acts as the business manager, sending his nephew to do most of the hands-on work.  He rents out rooms in his building to both Dong Joo and Hae Ahn.

Things I Liked

 ♥ SamSam

The uncles in this drama brought just the right amount of cute comic relief.  I never felt like it was too slapstick, but the scenes with them were always fun; especially when it was both of them together.  I also liked their relationships with Dong Joo and Tae Hee.  It felt like they truly wanted the best for them, which was a refreshing apporoach.  These two actors are both so talented and their partnership in this drama was very enjoyable.

 ♥ Coffin Room

I loved what a bright and beautiful room the coffin room turned into when Dong Joo was helping people.  The comparison between the dark and sterile coffin room, and the elegant and warm makeup room was well done.  The message this room conveyed to me was the idea that death can also be calm and beautiful for those who are moving on to a better place.  I really appreciated this concept.

♥ Baek Dal Shik

Bael Dal Shik is an amazing character.  His relationship with Dong Joo was so natural and healthy.  He always listened to what she wanted and never pushed her against her will.  His patient approach to parenting was inspiring.  It was so sad that he had to be Dong Joo’s last case.  It really served no purpose, except to throw in a little last minute heartbreak.  But I certainly wouldn’t have been so upset if he wasn’t such a great character to begin with.

Things I Didn’t Like

Fire Story Tie-In

This drama had a really interesting tie-in between Dong Joo’s job at the Funeral Hall and the fire she and Tae Hee were both involved in when they were young (Or, in Dong Joo’s case, in the womb).  But the writers didn’t do enough to introduce the back story into the series as it went along.  Then they just threw it in as a rushed story at the end.  If it had been better paced and there had been a few more clues along the way, it would have made the story so much more meaningful.

Chung Ha

I don’t really feel like Chung Ha’s character was needed in this drama.  If Tae Hee had carried some anger and blamed her for Jun Ho’s death, it might have made more sense.  But in the end, he said he didn’t blame her, he just didn’t have feelings for her anymore.  And after her mother’s death, she seems to disappear as quickly as she showed up.  Her story felt weak and unneccessary. And what was the point of the other doctor who liked her?  He was a totally pointless character with no significance.

Wishes

There was a strange unevenness to the people that Dong Joo helped.  While some had very interesting stories and I felt like we got to know the characters well, others had very few scenes and short backstories.  It seemed like the writers just didn’t have enough material to tell all the stories that they chose.  Maybe showing fewer characters with more complete stories would have made the series stronger.  We didn’t even see some of the characters walk down the path, as they moved on to the afterlife.  Some consistancy in the way these wishes were told would have made more sense.

May I Help You - Full Review

The Ending

The last couple episodes of this drama were a let down for me.  What started as such a nice, interesting story, turned into a tragic tale where the whole purpose is buried in a rush to finish.   Hae Ahn is exposed as the villain who broke several crimes to keep the truth of Jun Ho’s death hidden.  I really hate that they ruined this character, who was always so sweet and sincere.  Nothing is achieved by finding out that he is the brother of the actual killer, who has already died.  Dong Joo’s dad ends up being her last wisher, which is also sad and pointless.  But once she spends her final moments with him, she is freed of her magical power.  And in a sudden voice over, we later learn that all of the people Dong Joo helped were in a fire with her mom, while her mom was still pregnant with Dong Joo.  Thanks to their help, Dong Joo’s mom made it out long enough to give birth to Dong Joo before her death.  And young Tae Hee was also there, which explains the burn on his wrist.  That’s a lot to take in for the final 10 minutes, but there it is.  Chung Ha comes to say goodbye to Tae Hee before moving to the US.  Vincent gets an investor to help expand the company.  Dong Joo quits the work at the funeral hall, but finds she can’t stay away.  In the end, Dong Joo continues her job, but takes on a different role, while a new “student” gets her old special ability.  And Tae Hee goes back to being a doctor.  And their relationship is going strong!

May I Help You - Unspoiled Review

“May I Help You” is an emotional, supernatural drama.  It deals with themes like death, final goodbyes, and healing for those who go on after losing their loved ones.  The stories are meant to pull at our heartstrings and possibly require a tissue or two along the way.  So if you aren’t up to bittersweet and heartbreaking farewells, this one is probably not for you.  The pacing of this one is definitely an issue and the last couple episodes are rushed and a bit of a disappointment.  But the stories of the people she helps are unique and interesting, and the leads have a sweet chemistry.   I give “May I Help You” a 7 out of 10 ramen.

The Story

Alchemy of Souls Seasons 1 & 2 - Full Review

An elite group of mage study spells and powers together at the Jeongjingak Training School, as they protect the land from the evil of sorcery and the illegal use of the “alchemy of souls”.  Four young friends, each from one of the most influential families of the kingdom, lead the skilled mages in their fight against the forces of black magic.  But unknown to them, “soul shifters” are living among them in a secret society called the Unanimous Assembly, just waiting for the chance to seize power away from these brave protectors and usher in a world led by greed and abuse of power.

Lee Jae Wook as Jang Uk

Due to a powerful and dangerous birth secret, when Jang Uk was born his father sealed off his ability to perform magic and left the baby in the care of their trusted maidservant.  After years of searching for a teacher who could undo his father’s curse, he finds an unlikely master in the form of a weak peasant girl named Mu Deok, who possess the spirit of the great shadow assassin Naksu.  But after finally reclaiming his abilities, and falling in love with his beautiful mentor, Mu Deok becomes a pawn of the evil Jin Mu and is killed.  Broken hearted, Jang Uk uses the full force of his mage skills to become a ruthless hunter of soul shifters.  But when he meets a young priestess with no memory of her past, he feels a strange connection to her that tempts him to fall in love again.

Alchemy of Souls Seasons 1 & 2 - Full Review

In Season One, Jang Uk is humble, kindhearted and passionate.  But Season Two finds him bitter and sullen.  After gaining the thing he thought he wanted most, his magic abilities, he lost the one who he loved the most.  I loved the growth we saw in Lee Jae Wook for this role.  Getting the chance to play two types of characters in one drama really showed his ability as an actor.  This role was a perfect fit for him and I really felt the character development as it happened through the series.

Jung So Min as Mu Deok

Mu Deok was a blind orphan before Naksu sent her soul into Mu Deok’s body.   After the shift, Mu Deok is no longer blind, but her eyes bear the blue “bruising” that comes from soul shifting.  It is the blue in her eyes that tips Jang Uk to the fact that she carries the soul of the great assassin, Naksu.  Jang Uk swears his allegiance to her as his master, but in the presence of others, she is his servant, which creates some fun, comical moments.  Together, Jang Uk and Mu Deok train in the arts of magic, and both regain at least some of their strength together.  But evil lurks in those around them.  And Mu Deok’s true identity is discovered and used to end her life and threaten Jang Uk. Season One ends with her tragic death, breaking Jang Ok’s heart and spirit.

Alchemy of Souls Seasons 1 & 2 - Full Review

Go Youn Jung as Naksu / Cho Yeong / Jin Bu Yeon

Bu Yeon is the powerful priestess of the Jin family.  She lives in secret, locked away in a room in her family’s home.  She has no memory of her childhood.  But in reality, when Mu Deok dies, Naksu’s soul moves from her body into Bu Yeon’s.  Bu Yeon’s mother hides her so no one will know that her daughter has become a soul shifter.  But Jang Uk finds her by accident and she begs him to marry her and free her from her family prison.  While Jang Uk is hesitant to help her in the beginning, she eventually persuades him to help.  And as they spend time together, Jang Uk begins to sense Naksu’s soul buried within her.  Their marriage, that started as a scam, slowly begins to feel real.

Hwang Min Hyun as Seo Yul

Seo Yul is a childhood friend of Jang Uk and one of the most powerful mages from the Seo family.  He met Naksu when they were young and she was his first love.  He recognizes Naksu in both Mu Deok and Bu Yeon.  But the fated bond that Jang Uk has with Naksu is too strong for him to compete with.

Shin Seung Ho as Go Won

Go Won is the Crown Prince.  As the royal family, his relationship with the mages is complicated.  Go Won has been trained by Jin Mu in the magic arts, but he doesn’t know anything about the secret society of soul shifters Jin Mu has created.  After losing a duel against Jang Uk, the two begin a grudging friendship that neither wants to admit to.  Go Won falls in love with both Mu Deok and Bu Yeon, but neither return his feelings.

Alchemy of Souls Season 1 & 2 - Full Review
Alchemy of Souls Seasons 1 & 2 - Full Review

Yoo Joon Sang as Park Jin

Park Jin is in charge of training the mages.  He is a powerful teacher who was once in love with Jang Uk’s mother.  When she died in childbirth, Jin buried his feelings and prepared to live alone.  But his friendship with Maidservant Kim over the years eventually turns into something stronger.  And even though she tries to make it clear that she returns his feelings, Jin doesn’t get the message.

Things I Liked

 ♥ Romance Lines

I really like that this drama had so many potential romance lines. Obviously Jang Uk was always going to end up with Naksu in whatever form.  But it was fun that she had multiple “second leads” to interact with.  They also kept us guessing with some of the secondary characters, instead of the usual obvious pairings that often happen for non-leads.  The web of relationships in this series was just more complex and therefore more interesting, in my opinion.

 ♥ Go Won

Crown Prince Go Won is a great character in this drama.  His interactions with each of the other characters was unique and funny.  I especially loved his friendship with Jang Uk.  And his desire to become a good, strong leader felt realistic and natural.  The respect he showed both Mu Deok and Bu Yeon gave this role a very just, sympathetic feel that worked well.  And his love of his beloved turtle always made me giggle.

♥ Park Jin

Park Jin was such a fun character.  The comic elements that he brought to this drama were often understated but always well done.  His father-like relationship with Jang Uk was at once heartbreaking and touching, and his push and pull romance with Maidservant Kim was one of the best relationships of the series.  You never quite knew what his character would do next and his balance between the gruff school master and the mentor/father figure to his mages was well done.

Alchemy of Souls Seasons 1 & 2 - Full Review

Things I Didn’t Like

Inconsistent Seasons

The differences between the two seasons of this drama left many fans frustrated.  From the obviously things like number of episodes and lead female actress to the more subtle things like story arc, division of plot lines, and major themes, it all felt slightly uneven and imbalanced.  Season 2 lacked much of the humor, strong story development, and romantic chemistry that made the first season such a success.  This may be because they hadn’t finished writing Season Two when they began airing the first, but the series would have felt stronger if the seasons had been more equally paced.

Mage School

I really enjoyed the scenes that we got to see at Jeongjingak.  The interaction and competition between the mages was an interesting element to this drama that I wish they had explored more.  Even in Season One, I would have liked to see more scenes inside the school.  But when Season Two closed down Jeongjingak, it left a real hole in the plots for the secondary characters.   There just wasn’t much left to do for all the side characters we had met in Season One.

Naksu

Naksu’s presence as a fierce, tough assassin made her such a compelling lead character.  But Bu Yeon’s character never seems to get to the place where she possesses that kind of powerful role.  When all is said and done, the new Naksu feels like a mere “shadow” of her former self.  A newer actress like Go Youn Jung just doesn’t have the same commanding presence that a seasoned actress like Jung So Min has, which made it hard to see Naksu as a tie between the two of them. It just felt like in Bu Yeon, we never actually got the real Naksu back.

Alchemy of Souls Seasons 1 & 2 - Full Review

The Ending

Though fans had their doubts about this one, the Hong sisters delivered a happy ending for all of our main characters with only the villains dead.  Although there were a few fake deaths to scare us along the way.  Jang Uk is able to defeat the fire bird once and for all and kill all of the Unanimous Assembly, including Jin Mu and the King and Queen. But with the destruction of Jinyowon, the relics stored there have all been set free to create havoc in the world. Jumping forward a year, we find Jin and Maidservant Kim happily married and discovering they will be having a baby soon.  They spend their time babysitting the twin boys of Dang Gu and Cho Yeon, who are doing well, and just waiting to please Cho Yeon’s mom by having a girl to pass the family lineage to.  Won is King, now that his parents are both gone.  And Yul is in charge of finding new mage pupils for Jeongjingak, which is now accepting all students who are qualified, regardless of their family name.  Our leads are now living as a happily married couple who spend their time together hunting down the remaining relics from Jinyowon, with the perfect balance of light and shadow that made them destined from the start.

Should I Watch

Alchemy of Souls Seasons 1 & 2 - Unspoiled Review

“Alchemy of Souls” incorporates many of the themes you would expect from a historical drama;  a fight for the throne, birth secrets, and political intrigue and factions.  But it also brings the charm and beauty of a fairy tale fantasy.  This is a fight between good and evil, and what to do when those lines become blurred.  If magical fantasy is not your cup of tea, then the many scenes of spell casting and mythical storytelling probably won’t interest you.  And 30 episodes may start to seem a bit long if complicated politics and historical tropes bore you.  But if you enjoy both of these genres, this drama has lots to offer.  The cinematography is beautiful, the cast has great chemistry, and the world created by the Hong sisters is captivating. I give “Alchemy of Souls” an 9 out of 10 ramen.

Kim Seol Hyun as Lee Yeo Reum

Life seemed to be going well for Lee Yeo Reum, with a long-term boyfriend, a stable job, and a loving mother.  Until tragedy strikes and tears everything that she has depended on apart.  Discouraged and dejected, she packs as much of her belongings as will fit in a small backpack and takes the train out of the city.  When she finds herself in the small, seaside town of Angok, she wanders into the small community library and feels a sense of belonging.  The shy librarian also peaks her interest.  So she rents a building and settles in.  Along the way, she makes friends and builds important relationships.  But a past town tragedy rears its ugly head and threatens to disrupt the peaceful life she has worked so hard to find.

Summer Strike - Full Review

Lee Yeo Reum is warm and thoughtful.  Even those in Angok who wanted to dislike her were eventually won over by her sincerity and willingness to get involved in people’s lives in a positive way.  Kim Seol Hyun is adorable in this role.  She portrays Yeo Reum’s simplicity and easy-going nature in a charming and infectious way.  Due to the slow-burn romance style of this drama, Kim Seol Hyun’s chemistry with Yim Si Wan was understated and natural, as it slowly developed and grew.

Yim Si Wan as An Dae Beom

Once a math progeny and genius, An Dae Beom left the pressure and stress behind to move home to Angok.  Now he works at the local library with the best friend of his sister, who died a tragic death.  He enjoys a simple life at a slow and relaxing pace.  But when a beautiful stranger wanders into the library one afternoon, he feels his heart flutter for the first time.  Having experienced many of the feelings of burnout that Yeo Reum is dealing with, he becomes a guide to her in her journey to embrace a more quiet, slower life style.  And he hopes she will open her heart to him in more personal ways as well.

Summer Strike - Full Review

An Dae Beom gave up academia after losing his temper with his teacher and mentor.  His anger stemmed more from his childhood trauma than his recent studies.  But it became apparent that he needed to find a way to heal the pain he had kept bottled inside.  Yim Si Wan was wonderful as the sensitive and shy librarian who is so earnest in his views and opinions.  He has a special talent for portraying honest vulnerability, and this character reflected that well.

Park Ye Young as Jo Ji Young

Jo Ji Young was the best friend of Dae Beom’s sister when she was alive.  After her death, the two turned to each other for comfort and became best friends.  Ji Young works at the library with Dae Beom.  She is secretly interested in him romantically, but Dae Beom has never returned her feelings.  On the other hand, their friend Bae Sung Min has always liked Ji Young, but she is too preoccupied with her feelings for Dae Beom to notice.

Things I Liked

 ♥ Kim Bom

I really enjoyed Kim Bom’s character.  I loved watching her friendship with Yeo Reum.  Listen to the two of them giggle together was priceless, and it was satisfying to see her finding some joy in her difficult life.  Her romance with Jae Hoon was sweet and fun to watch.  And her scenes with her grandmother were touching.  She had great energy with all the people she was close to.

 ♥ The Romance

The romance between Yeo Reum and Dae Beom was done very well.  Of course, I love this kind of slow burn love story, but their relationship seemed to unfold so naturally.  And they both shared a similar ability to extend kindness, even to those who least deserved it, with a quiet dignity that was admirable.  It is funny and yet fitting, that we see a kiss between Kim Beom and Jae Hoon, but not one between the leads.  And yet the affection between Yeo Reum and Dae Beom is undeniable.

♥ Bae Jun

I just can’t pass up the opportunity to gush about how much I love this little actor. Kim Jun is definitely an up and coming talent.  He has an ability to deliver very adult-like lines with perfect sincerity.  He played a similar character in “Hospital Playlist” and I love him then too.  He takes on the role of parent so naturally and it makes me smile every time he does it.

Summer Strike - Full Review

Things I Didn’t Like

Bae Jun’s Mother

Although it may not have been necessary to the storyline, single father’s are rare in Korea.  And it seems unlikely that a small town like Angok wouldn’t be full of talk about what happened to Bae Joon’s mother.  It just kind of felt like the elephant in the room and would have made more sense if they had at least made a passing comment about who or where she was.  Especially in light of the developing relationship between Ji Young and Sung Min toward the end of the series.

Toxic Characters

This drama had some pretty problematic characters.  At their worst they are toxic and at their best they are at least unlikeable.  Bom’s father is such a horrible person, and watching her be forced to pretend it was all fine after he assaulted her just felt wrong.  Also Chang Soo and his wife.  I understand that they want to protect their son, but not at the expense of other people’s safety.  I never felt like their “redemption” at the end felt sincere or deserved.  They were horrible to Yeo Reum all the way through, and the abrupt turn around didn’t sit right.

Mystery that Can’t be Solved

The whole mystery aspect of this series was a bit strange.  There was no mention of a darker side in any of the drama descriptions.  And once they finally brought the whole story out into the open, they solved it relatively quickly, with no chance for the audience to become invested in it.  There was absolutely no clue that the realtor and his cop son were the villains.  I would have liked it more if the mystery pieces were paced more consistantly through the whole show.

Summer Strike - Full Review

The Ending

“Summer Strike” has a simple, happy ending.  Dae Beom’s sister’s murder is solved and both Geon Ho and Dae Beom’s father are cleared of any charges.  Kwak Moo Chul, the helpful if slightly incompetant police officer is exposed as the actual killer.  And his father murdered Bom’s grandmother to help cover up his son’s crimes.  Jae Hoon comes back from the US and proposes to Bom.  She agrees to date him for the time being.  Ji Young is working in Seoul but she and Sung Min are at least exploring the idea of dating.  And Yeo Reum is staying in Angok and living with Bom and her brother.  In the final scene, the group take a walk on the beach.  Bom and Jae Hoon tease each other playfully while Yeo Reum and Dae Beom hold hands and take their time.  The voice over says that they have learned that this “is enough”.

Should I Watch

Summer Strike - Unspoiled Review

“Summer Strike” starts as a warm, slow-burn romance that turns into a darker mystery drama.  The transition seems a bit jarring, but if you enjoy this combination, it is worth watching.  While I’m not sure that it felt like the “healing” drama it was advertised to be, the story is interesting and the leads are sweet. I found the romance element much more captivating than the mystery plot, but if you don’t like your romance muddied up with more serious storylines, you might want a more straightforward love story.   I give “Summer Strike” an 8 out of 10 ramen.

Reborn Rich - Full Review

Song Joong Ki as Jin Do Joon/ Yoon Hyun Woo

Yoon Hyun Woo gave up his dreams to go to college to take a part time job supporting his family.  Working his way from the bottom, he became the senior manager of the Assets Management Department for Soonyang Group.  But he has taken plenty of abuse and humiliation along the way, with the family members treating him more like a personal servant.  When he is asked to go to Turkey and empty the overseas bank accounts for the company, someone among them murders him.  Instead of dying, he wakes up in 1987, as Jin Do Joon, a young boy who is the youngest grandson of the Soonyang family.  Since he has maintained all of Hyun  Woo’s memories, he is armed with tons of personal family knowledge and historical events that he has already lived through.  Now he has a chance to topple the powerful business dynasty and take his revenge on everyone who has hurt him.

Reborn Rich - Full Review

Yoon Hyun Woo has a lot of resentment toward his father for having to shoulder their family’s financial burden.  Because of this, he has always believed that money could solve all of his problems.  So when he wakes up in a rich family, he is eager to make the most of it.  Originally, Hyun Woo hopes to prevent the tragic death of his mother, but he soon finds that changing the circumstances of her death cannot change the outcome.  Song Joong Ki is his usual charming self in this drama.  He fits the youthful role well and it is easy to feel sympathy for his story as Do Joon.  Although his chemistry with Jin Yang Cheol was very strong, some other relationships lacked development, particulary with Seo Min Young.  This is more a short-coming of the writing than the actor, but it left some of the scenes a bit flat.

Lee Sung Min as Jin Yang Cheol

Jin Yang Cheol is the CEO of Soonyang Group.  He grew his business from nothing into one of the most rich and powerful companies in Korea.  Along the way he has done whatever was necessary to ensure the Group’s continued success, no matter how illegal.  But now, as his life is drawing to a close, he is burdened with the task of naming his successor.  He has always been a strong believer that his oldest son and grandson should be the ones to take over.  But when his youngest grandson suddenly shows natural business acumen and an all-or-nothing attitude similar to his own, he begins to rethink his decision.  Now he will pit all of them against each other to find out which of them has the strongest will to survive.

Reborn Rich - Full Review

Jin Yang Cheol is greedy and obsessed with money and success.  Nothing is more important to him that Soonyang Group; certainly not his own family.  He is wily and will not be easily won over.  He will call the shots right up until his final breath, and possibly even after.  Lee Sung Min was brilliant in this role.  He was entirely loathsome and shockingly cruel.  You could never underestimate the depths he would go to  to achieve his goals, and Lee Sung Min played the part perfectly.  I looked forward to hating him each time he appeared on the screen!

Shin Hyun Bin as Seo Min Young

Seo Min Young is known as the Grim Reaper of the Soonyang family.  She is a prosecutor at the Seoul District Office.  Hyun Woo goes up against her when she comes to invade the Soonyang offices.  And then he meets the younger version of her when he goes back in time.  They end up falling in love, but their relationship is complicated by her job and his family’s unlawful reputation.

Yoon Je Moon as Jin Young Ki

Jin Young Ki is Yang Cheol’s oldest son.  He has spent his life preparing to take over the business.  But he has made plenty of mistakes along the way and his brother and sister are just waiting to catch him in an unforgivable situation.  He spends his time sucking up to his father and determined to become the next CEO of Soonyang Group.

Kim Nam Hee as Jin Sung Joon

Jin Sung Joon is the eldest Soonyang grandson and the son of Young Ki.  Now that he is old enough to assume leadership, he is the next in line to take over Soonyang Group. He is cruel and deceitful.  He is an abusive boss to Hyun Woo, and a mean cousin to Do Joon.  Do Joon’s plan for revenge centers around him and his downfall.

Things I Liked

 ♥ Financial History

I thought this drama did an interesting job of giving a lesson on the financial history of Korea in the 80’s and 90’s.  From IMF to 9/11, we see it all replayed, with some sports victories on the side.  I must admit that my knowledge of the Korean IMF crisis is limited to a handful of dramas that touched on the subject.  But this series shows what happened and it’s effects and outcomes on the country as a whole.  Seeing the whole story of that time in context gave me a clear perspective on how the events shaped modern Korean business practices.

 ♥ Jin Young Joon

Unfortunately, we don’t see much of Do Joon’s older brother, but I thought he was a fun and refreshing character.  His light-hearted approach to all the family drama was the perfect touchstone for Do Joon.  In many ways, Young Joon represents the carefree person Yoon Ki was trying to become, but was never able to quite achieve.  Young Joon really cared more about his family than any of the family business conflicts.  At least one member of the family manages to remain untouched by greed and selfishness.

♥ Jin Yoon Ki

Do Joon’s father is the most interesting of all the Soonyang siblings because he is the only one with any depth or character development.  Unlike his siblings, who are all just terrible for the fun of it, Yoon Ki has a journey.  He is the only one brave enough to step out from under his grandfather’s umbrella, to pursue his own dreams.  But in a moment of weakness, he allows himself to be drawn back into the web of deceit.  Ha In’s reaction to his increasing family involvement make it clear that there is more going on than just family dinners.  And in the end, we see him trying to reclaim that independence he fought so hard for in the first place.  This trajectory makes his character seem relatable and interesting.

Things I Didn’t Like

Grandmother

So the grandmother’s two-faced sweetness was pretty sickening, and I get that.  But the fact that Do Joon sent her out of the country and no one ever gives her a second thought is just really sad.  She specifically says that she didn’t tell any of her kids anything because she couldn’t face them knowing what she did.  Yet those same kids never even try to get her to come back.  And who is actually running the house now that she is gone?  Is there really no one who misses her?

What a Memory!

Okay, maybe this is just me, but who remembers dates and details of everything that happened over the span of almost 20 years.  Even as a kid, Do Joon just magically remembers the day of a plane crash.  Maybe if they had him make a mistake just once, it would have been easier to accept.  But it seemed pretty unrealistic that he remembered everything that happened and exactly when, during that whole time.  I know if it were me, I would have been much less helpful!

Time-Travel Rules

Every time travel drama is faced with the question of what changing the past will do to the present.  In this case, after Hyun Woo’s mom dies despite his best efforts, he concludes that what is meant to happen can’t be changed.  But that doesn’t seem to apply to everything.  Do Joon changes the course of people’s lives often with his knowledge of what’s about to happen.  For example, having his father invest in the movie “Titanic”.  It just felt inconsistant and it seemed like the writers randomly changed the rules whenever the story needed it.  And what are the consequences of certain changes like Do Joon’s mom dying of suicide instead of a heart attack?

Reborn Rich - Full Review

The Ending

“Reborn Rich” has a messy and rushed ending that is open for interpretation.  Was it a happy ending?  That really depends on who you ask.  Do Joon dies in a car accident, just as Hyun Woo remembered.  And  then Hyun Woo wakes up in the hospital after being in a coma.  It is unclear whether his memories of Do Joon are all just a dream or if he did live as Do Joon for 20 years.  But Min Young did save Hyun Woo from dying, and now the two of them team up to expose the family’s crimes.  In the end, all the Soonyang siblings are forced to hand over leadership of the company to a management team. We don’t see any of them doing time for their part in it all.  But we see Young Ki die alone in the hospital, much like his father.  And Sung Joon’s wife leaves him. Do Joon finds Se Hyeon and once again convinces him to be his partner, so Miracle Investments is alive and well.  And Min Young has finally let go of her overwhelming grief at losing Do Joon.  And when she accidentally bumps into Hyun Woo, we see a glimmer of recognition in her eyes.  He definitely reminds her of someone she knew and loved.  So there stil seems to be some hope that their destiny will bring them together again.

Should I Watch

Reborn Rich - Unspoiled Review

“Reborn Rich” is a time travel drama that incorporates 1980’s and 90’s history with revenge and corporate greed. If you love a root for the underdog kind of revenge story, this one fits the bill.  Song Joong Ki is his usual charming self and Lee Sung Min is truly terrifying as the money-loving CEO who refuses to give up on outdated business practices like primogeniture. The suspense and plot twists are thrilling. But ultimately, this is a story about a greedy CEO and his power-hungry children and grandchildren, who will trample anyone who gets in their way as they fight their way to the top.  So, if you are looking for a fantasy style drama and don’t enjoy business and political intrigue, it may not hold your interest, no matter how much you may love Song Joong Ki.   I give “Reborn Rich” an 8 out of 10 ramen.

The Story

Live up to Your Name - Full Review

A Joseon doctor who specializes in acupuncture accidentally time-travels to modern day Seoul.   At first he is overwhelmed with his new surroundings, but a beautiful surgeon and her father take him in and help him adjust to his new life.  Eager to learn all he can from the advanced techniques of modern medicine, he finds a job at a traditional medical facility in the city.  And as he begins to settle into his new life and build relationships with the people around him in the present, he wonders if he wouldn’t be happy staying here and never returning to the past he left behind.  But he is torn between his heart and his sense of responsibility.

Kim Nam Gil as Dr. Heo Im

Dr. Heo Im spent his whole career as a doctor trying to get promoted to a Royal Physician.  But when he finally gets his shot, his hands refuse to stop shaking and the King accuses him of treason.  Im goes on the run but the Royal Guard chase him down and shoot him with an arrow.  Miraculously, instead of dying, he wakes up in modern day Seoul, where his adventure really begins.  Along the way, he makes some friends, works in a huge, successful traditional medicine hospital, and falls in love.  But with his people at home in his time on the verge of war and needing medical assistance, his conscience keeps tugging at him to return to where he belongs, and where he can do the most good.

Live up to Your Name - Full Review

Heo Im is ambitious but he still has a heart to serve those in need.  His time in the present helps him gain a fresh perspective on his priorities and what really makes him happy.  Kim Nam Gil was excellent in this role.  His range of emotions, from silly and overly upbeat to emotional and vulnerable gave this character a surprising amount of depth.  No matter who he was onscreen with, I looked forward to seeing what he would say and do next.  This role seemed to fit his skill set perfectly and his larger than life laughter was a great highlight for me.

Kim Ah Joong  as Choi Yeon Kyung

Choi Yeon Kyung is a cardiothoracic surgical fellow.  She works tirelessly and goes clubbing when she needs to relieve her stress.  But one night after dancing her worries away, she meets an unusual man trying to perform medical procedures on a stranger in the street. And, as if by destiny, the man continues to show up in her life.  As she gets to know him, she realizes he is not as crazy as she had initially thought, but there is definitely something different about him.  When the two of them are thrust back into the Joseon period together, she has no choice but to believe he really is who he says he is.  And as their feelings for each other grow, they wonder how they will ever find a way to stay together.

Live up to Your Name - Full Review

Choi Yeon Kyung began studying modern medicine as a way to rebel against her grandfather, who is a well-known acupuncturist.  But her anger at her grandfather stems from a misunderstanding about how her mother died.  Im’s appearance helps her finally mend their broken relationship.  I liked Kim Ah Joong in this role.  She is fierce and passionate and her enthusiasm and authority come through the screen well.  Her character’s straight-forward approach to life was well portrayed.

Yoo Min Kyu as Yoo Jae Ha / Yoo Jin Oh

Yoo Jae Ha is Yeon Kyung’s childhood friend.  After being inspired by her dream to study medicine, Jae Ha became a traditional medicine physician, like both of their grandfathers.  Jae Ha’s grandfather, Ma Sung Tae, is the Director of the Eastern Medicine Hospital.  Sung Tae and Yeon Kyung’s grandfather were once close friends before a mysterious falling out.

Yoon Joo Sang as Choi Chun Sool

Choi Chun Sool is Yeon Kyung’s grandfather.  He is a famous acupuncturists who has a small clinic where he administers traditional medicine to those who can’t afford to go to a big hospital.  He and Yeon Kyung have been distant since she lost her parents.  Although he tries to make peace offerings to her, she usually ignores his efforts.

Uhm Hyo Sub as Heo Jun

Heo Jun is a famous doctor from the Joseon Period.  He has been a kind of mentor to Im.  Before Im’s turn, Heo Jun himself also travelled to the present time and met both Yeon Kyung and Jae Ha’s grandfathers.  Using the knowledge he learned there, Heo Jun now teaches and writes medical books that are still a part of medical history.

Things I Liked

 ♥ Two-Way Time Travel

The whole time travel element of this drama is done very well.  I liked that it wasn’t just Im coming to the present, but both he and Yeon Kyung going between the Joseon Period and the present.  It was also interesting that the way to jump from one time to the other could only happen through death.  Especially for two doctors, this must have been a significant experience.  These mechanisms gave the drama a unique feel and felt more intersting than random time shifts.

 ♥ Traditional Medicine

This series gives a fascinating look into the world of Eastern medicine.  I have to admit that while I have grown used to medical shows that have patients open on an operating table, watching Im poke needles all the way through a patience hand definitely had me squirming.  Traditional healing is a subject I have always found intersting, and I enjoyed getting to see some of the ways it is practiced, both in the past and now.

♥ Oh Ha Ra

Oh Ha Ra’s story was both beautiful and heartbreaking.  I loved her individual connections with both Yeon Kyung and Im.  I was so sad to see her die after all she had been through.  But I understand how her death affected both lead characters and their perspectives on their jobs.  The impact that her character had on the arc of the drama was as profound as the role itself.  But I’m sure I’m not the only one who would have like to see more scenes between her and our doctors.

Live up to Your Name - Full Review

Things I Didn’t Like

 Dong Mak Gae

Seeing the young Moon Ga Young was a delight and Dong Mak Gae had a great backstory, so I was interested in her character.  After giving her so much potential, there is really no character development for Mak Gae.  I would have loved to see a storyline that focused on her and her struggle to practice medicine as a woman.  Especially when it could so obviously be mirrored by Yeon Kyung and her modern career.  I just wish she could have had more screentime to explore this role.

Lackluster Reunion

Im and Yeon Kyung had great chemistry throughout this drama and a couple very romantic kisses.  So because of that, I was a bit disappointed that their reunion at the end wasn’t more emotional.  After believing they would never see each other again, a few glistening tears on the cheek just doesn’t seem like enough excitement for how they should have felt.  I’m glad it was a happy ending, but I wish they had put a bit more effort into the drama of the moment.

Purpose of Time-Travel

Fantasy dramas don’t always feel the need to explain why a magical event happens, and I get that.  It is part of the mystery and appeal.  But I would have like more explanation about the magic tool set.  Did Heo Jun choose Im as the next time traveler, or did he at least know that was his fate?  Now that the front of the case is blank again, has Im lost the ability to return home forever.  Or is the case now intended for Mak Gae, who is there with him now?  A little more explanation would have been nice.

Live up to Your Name - Full Review

The Ending

“Live up to Your Name” gives us the happy ending we all wanted, after a bit of nail biting.  Im decides to go back to his own time to help the people through the upcoming war.  Yeon Kyung’s father gets his surgery and is back to his old, healthy self.  And he and Yeon Kyung have finally made peace with each other about their past.  Jae Ha’s father, Director Ma also makes peace with Yeon Kyung’s father and asks if he can work in his clinic with him.  There is romance in the air for Jae Sook and Byung Ki, finally!  Back to our lead couple, Im and Mak Gae are together in a pavillion when an accident causes them to fall together.  Im happily wakes up to find himself back in Seoul.  And he immediately looks for Yeon Kyung, who is at a medical tent helping the homeless.  He hurries to her and the two have a sweet, if not overly emotional reunion.  The couple walk together and banter as if no time has passed.  And as a surprise bonus, in the final scene, we also find Mak Gae at the Eastern Medical Office as she bumps into Jae Ha in an examination room.  It seems like she may finally be able to live as a woman and a doctor.  And there may even be a spark of romance to go with it. This actually opens the door for a Season 2, but there is no talk of this series actually getting one. Which is too bad, because I would definitely watch it.

Live up to Your Name - Full Review

Should I Watch

Live up to Your Name - Unspoiled Review

“Live up to Your Name” is a time travel drama with a medical twist.  The comedy elements are fun and the romance is sweet.  If you have an interest in traditional medicine, this one is an interesting watch.  The story is unique and Kim Nam Gil is wonderful as the gifted, though sometimes clumsy, physician.  If you are looking for a serious, realistic hospital series, this is not it, although it does have its heartbreaking medical moments. But the heart of this drama is more about the characters and their relationships than the cases themselves.    I give “Live up to Your Name” a 9 out of 10 ramen.

Lee Jong Suk as Park Chang Ho

Park Chang Ho is a lawyer who makes grand promises but seldom. delivers on them, which has earned him the nickname Big Mouth.  Down on his luck and in huge debt, he is feeling discouraged.  But a secret meeting with the mayor gives him hope for a better future.  What should have been an open and shut case for him takes a surprising turn that lands him in prison, accused of being the powerful crime boss, Big Mouse.  Now his life depends on him convincing everyone that he really is Big Mouse while secretly trying to find the criminal’s true identity.  And when the real Big Mouse is suddenly killed, he finds himself pushed into the position for real, with a surprising ally who he never suspected.

Big Mouth - Full Review

Park Chang Ho is positive and charming.  It is this magnetic personality that helps him to convince a prison full of suspicious inmates that he is indeed the dangerous criminal mastermind, Big Mouse.  But in his private moments with his wife we see a more vulnerable, unsure side that makes him all the more likable.  Lee Jong Suk was perfect for this role.  He was able to portray such a full range of complex emotions without ever losing the down-to-earth qualities that gave this character his distinct, winning personality.  I think this was a defining role for the actor and he has shown amazing growth that should lead to more strong roles in the future.

Im Yoon Ah as Go Mi Ho

Go Mi Ho is married to Chang Ho.  The two of them met when they were young and she worked as a nurse to help him get through Law School.  When her husband is first arrested, she immediately assumes his innocence and jumps right in to gather proof.  Even when all the evidence points to his guilt, she is straightforward in asking him if he really is Big Mouse. And when he assures her that he is not, she believes him without any doubt.  She takes a job working as a nurse at the prison so she can see Chang Ho and help him gather evidence.  But in the course of her duties as a nurse, she is exposed to toxic materials that will put her life at risk.

Big Mouth - Full Review

Go Mi Ho is bright with a sharp edge of strength that makes her fearless in the face of danger.  Her faith in Chang Ho and devotion to him and their marriage is unshakeable, even when she is frustrated with him.  Even though most of the drama had them spending long periods of time apart, their great chemistry and strong personalities made them a great couple to watch.  Im Yoon Ah played this role so well.  She conveyed this character’s bold personality while still showing an honest warmth that gave the role depth.  It would have been easy to undervalue this role next to Park Chang Ho’s undeniable screen presence, but she brought a quiet confidence that made her character and their relationship irresistable.

Kim Joo Heon as Choi Do Ha

Choi Do Ha is the Mayor of Seoul and the main villain of this drama.  He is powerful and ruthless.  His greed and ambition drive him, and he is not afraid to take out anyone who stands in his way.  He hopes to make his way all the way up to President with his strong connections and political savvy. He pulls the strings behind the scenes to keep all the players in his dangerous game under his thumb, but Chang Ho is determined to expose him for the cold blooded killer and manipulator that he is.

Yang Kyung Won as Gong Ji Hoon

Gong Ji Hoon is the President of a media company.  He and Choi Do Ha are battling to win the favor of Chairman Kang Sung Geun, and become the next leader of the secret society, NR Forum.  Ji Hoon’s success lies in his ability to predict which way the wind is blowing, and he is not afraid to change alliegances if it will work to his advantage.  This makes him a smart business man but an unreliable partner.

Oh Eui Shik as Kim Soon Tae

Kim Soon Tae is Chang Ho’s best friend and fellow lawyer.  He has a small, private law office and is quiet and unassuming.  He agrees to represent Chang Ho after he is arrested, and he is working with Mi Ho to help prove Chang Ho’s innoncence.  But in a surprising plot twist, when Chang Ho finds out who the real Big Mouse is, he also finds out that his friend is actually the second in charge in the real criminal’s organization.

Things I Liked

 ♥ Go Ki Kwang

Mi Ho’s father was such a warm and fun character.  Whether his scenes were with his daughter, Chang Ho, or Soon Tae, it was a pleasure to watch his natural interactions and passion for the role.  The scene in Episode 1 where Mi Ho and Chang Ho are fighting over who Ki Kwang would choose to live with set the stage for their relationship all the way through.  I wish that the ending had included a scene with him and Chang Ho together, showing a glimpse of how they have gone on, hopefully still together, without her.  Lee Gi Young took a role that could have been fairly inconsequential and gave it a life of its own.

 ♥ Unique Story

This series brought plenty of fresh storylines and creative plots.  A revenge drama about a corrupt Mayor is certainly nothing new, but this one added some amazing, new elements.  Even after the central mystery of who Big Mouse is gets revealed, there is still lots of intriguing story left to unfold.  It was kind of nice to see the romance side of this drama take place between characters who are already married.  Rather than waste story time on their courtship, we get straight to a sweet and well-grounded marriage that still has tons of romance.

♥ Plot Twists

The best thing about this show was the constant plot twists and surprises.  Even if you managed to guess one or two, chances are there were others that came as a total shock.  My favorite twist was seeing Soon Tae as the powerful second in charge of Big Mouse’s organization.  The fast pacing for this drama didn’t give us much time to figure things out and that kept it even more interesting.  This is not the trope-heavy, predictable kdrama that we see so often.

Things I Didn’t Like

 Rushed and Useless Deaths

This drama introduced us to lots of interesting characters, so it was a real disappointment that several of them died without any real fanfare.  It almost felt disrespectful to the characters themselves.  The first example of this is No Bak, Mr. Big Mouth himself.  After such a long mystery about who he really is, he gets out of prison and 15 minutes later he’s dead.  For a crime boss as successful as him to just randomly open a cupboard and find a bomb seems too easy and convenient.  I would add  Hye Jin and Kwang Hyun to this list.  And don’t even get me started on the sudden deaths of Do Ha and Mi Ho.  It was almost like the writers just didn’t know how to phase out the characters properly so they just said , “And now they are dead”.

Final Lies

As I have said, I love Mi Ho and Chang Ho’s relationship.  One of my favorite things is how honest they always were, even when it was hard to say the truth.  Chang Ho loosing his lawsuit in the first episode is an example of that.  So, even though their intentions were selfless, I wish they hadn’t both chosen to lie to the other right before her death.  Mi Ho hid her illness and Chang Ho hid his new role as the real Big Mouse.  It seems out of character for the two of them to hide those kinds of life changing things from each other.

 Plot Holes

It is so frustrating to me that such a great drama could leave so many loose threads and dropped storylines.  Honestly I could fill a whole page with my unanswered questions.  But let me just hit on the low points.  Starting with the whole story about the Chairman’s son, who is a psychopath. Kwang Hyun takes the fall for him in order to get the money to save his mother.  But other than that, we have no story about him at all.  And why bother having him sue Do Ha for his father’s inheritance in the last episode if Do Ha was just going to die 10 minutes later.  It just seemed like this character was going to have some bearing on the story itself.  Also we never really find out what kinds of horrors were going on in the secret lab or what the missing paper is actually about.  And how exactly did Do Ha manage to become the Mayor of Seoul and a potential presidential candidate without anyone finding out he has been using a fake identity most of his life. All of this and more made me want to track down the writers and insist that they answer all my questions.

The Ending

Most fans seem to agree that the ending of “Big Mouth” was incredibly rushed.  There really isn’t any happy ever after to this ending.  In fact, it all feels a little gloomy and depressing for our hopeful and upbeat lawyer.  Chang Ho’s legal battle against Do Ha is unsuccessful, since Do Ha kidnaps his wife and has her institutionalized.  Mi Ho faints after the verdict is announced.  We next see her in a hospital bed where she tells Chang Ho that she is tired.  She closes her eyes and, we can assume, dies peacefully.  Chang Ho gets the last laugh when he visits Do Ha at his swimming pool.  Chang Ho proudly announces that  Do Ha is swimming in the same poison water that has killed so many people, including Mi Ho.  As Chang Ho leaves the area, we see Do Ha collapse dead into the pool.  We see Chang Ho continuing to act as Big Mouse, but using his money and power to help those in need through legal services and financial donations.  The ending scene shows Chang Ho driving in a car with a bouquet of white flowers as we hear a voiceover of Mi Ho’s words to him, asking him to be a good Big Mouse.  As a photo of the couple blows in the breeze, Chang Ho drives off into the horizon.

Should I Watch

Big Mouth - Unspoiled Review

“Big Mouth” is a legal action drama that is exciting and unpredictable.  The cast is really great, the concept is daring and creative, and the plot twists will keep you guessing right up until the end.  Unfortunately this creativity led the writers to loose control of some of the plots in the second half of the series, causing several glaring plot holes and wasted characters. If you like suspense and are willing to keep your focus on the lead character and his story, this one is a great watch.  And being told to just keep your eyes on Lee Jong Suk for 16 episodes is hardly a hardship.  But if you are haunted by loose threads and dead-end stories, this one may be  disappointing at times. I give “Big Mouth” a 8 out of 10 ramen.

The Story

Extraordinary Attorney Woo - Full Review

Attorney Woo is a 27-year old lawyer with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).  After passing law school with outstanding grades and acing the bar exam, she was turned down at every law firm she applied to.  Until an old friend of her father’s reached out with an offer from Hanbada Law Firm.  In the beginning, the new environment is challenging. Working together with her teammates, she will face plenty of struggles, but she will also make them stronger, with her amazing photographic memory and ability to think outside of the usual perspective.  And as they grow and learn together, they will find friendship and maybe even love.

Extraordinary Attorney Woo - Full Review

Park Eun Bin as Woo Young Woo

Woo Young Woo is a genius lawyer with ASD.  She is finally starting her first job working for a successful law firm.  But the struggles start before she even makes it to her office, with the complicated revolving door.  While law and legal issues are no problem, social interactions with team members and clients are another matter.  But an old friend from law school and a handsome litigator help Young Woo navigate the difficult social barriers.  And as the team solidifies, they begin to appreciate her unique perspectives and her ability to see their cases in a new light.  And with their support, Young Woo is able to move from being someone who is “good at law” to someone who is a good lawyer, with all the duties and nuances that entails.

Extraordinary Attorney Woo - Full Review

Woo Young Woo is quirky and fiercely independent.  Her love of whales and other marine mammals gives her a context to think about the world around her.  She is adorably self-aware of the differences in her thought processes and feelings, as opposed to her neurotypical peers, which makes her all the more endearing.  Park Eun Bin is a fabulous actress and this role is definitely a stand-out for her.  She managed to never lose character while also refraining from being too heavy handed with some of the more subtle points.  I absolutely loved her portrayal of this well-written character!

Kang Tae Oh as Lee Joon Ho

Lee Joon Ho works in the Litigation Department of Hanbada Law Firm.  His job involves supporting the legal team as they investigate their cases and gather evidence and materials.  When a new attorney shows up in the office, he is immediately drawn to her unusual charm.  After bonding over a love of whales, the two become work buddies.  But Joon Ho is surprised to find that his feelings are deepening into something much stronger.  And he understands that this is something that can’t be taken lightly.  Young Woo’s inexperience in romantic relationships and her self-admitted naivete in dealing with people need to be carefully considers before he can take a relationship with her any further.

Extraordinary Attorney Woo - Full Review

Lee Joon Ho is one of the most eligible bachelors at Hanbada.  His list of admirers is long, including Choi Soo Yeon.  And with good reason.  Joon Ho is thoughtful, charming, and hard-working.  Oh, Kang Tae Oh!  I think few fans  could say they didn’t fall for him, at least a little, in this role. He was incredibly sweet and kind.  I was already a fan, but this sealed my fate!  I loved that from the very beginning, Joon Ho treated Young Woo with the same respect he would any other co-worker.  He was patient and indulgent while others were frustrated and bored.  The quiet chemistry between him and Park Eun Bin made for plenty of heart-fluttering moments that always felt genuine and full of real affection.

Kang Ki Young as Jung Myung Seok

Kang Ki Young is a senior attorney at Hanbada.  In the beginning, he is doubtful that Young Woo is suitable to work for their firm, but over time he becomes her mentor and strongest supporter.  He has always given Hanbada his all, even when it came at the expense of his marriage.  But when he is diagnosed with cancer, he has an opportunity to reassess his priorities and fix the biggest mistake of his life.

Jeon Bae Soo as Woo Gwang Ho

Woo Gwang Ho is Young Woo’s father.  He was in law school and set to become a successful attorney, before his girlfriend and classmate, Tae Soo Mi, gets pregnant.  Soo Mi was more interested in a career than starting a family, so Gwang Ho raised Young Woo alone.  Though it has been a difficult and, often, lonely road, he is devoted to Young Woo and her happiness.

Joo Hyun Young as Dong Geurami

Dong Geurami has been Young Woo’s best friend since high school.  The two of them were both outcasts who banded together to form a strong, lasting friendship.  Now Geurami works at a small pub, run by Kim Min Shik.  Geurami is one of the only people Young Woo can talk to freely.  She is strong, eccentric, and absolutely loyal to Young Woo.

Things I Liked

 ♥ Law Cases

This drama did a nice job of showing various outcomes for their cases.  Rather than always being them defending the helpless victim and winning, there were times when they had to defend those who were obviously in the wrong.  This felt more realistic and gave the cases a bit of mystery that kept me invested.  Each case had twists and turns that went beyond what the audience may have originally thought.

 ♥ Public Awareness

This drama did its best to give people an idea of what it is like to live as a neurodivergent person and with one.  I personally found some of the examples and explanations to be very insightful.  As Young Woo patiently explained, ASD uses the word spectrum for a reason.  Her story is not the story of everyone with ASD.  But it does give us an idea of the challenges and biases that people who are neurodivergent face daily.

♥ Min Woo’s Redemption

There is no doubt that Min Woo is a creep at the beginning of this drama.  The things he does are selfish and cruel.  But sadly he feelings and opinions are not isolated.  He represents those who misunderstand ASD, which is why his story arc is so important.  As he gets to know Young Woo, especially through the eyes of his co-workers, he realizes that his attitude toward her was unfair and inappropriate.  And I am glad we got to take this journey with him.  Whatever our own biases may be, I’m sure we all have much to learn from his story.

Extraordinary Attorney Woo - Full Review

Things I Didn’t Like

 Secondary Love Lines

There are plenty of open-ended storylines in this drama, most noticeably with the romances of all our supporting characters.  It may be that they are saving all of that for the already announced Season 2, coming in 2024.  But for now, I would have liked to see a bit more closure, even if it was only to tease what is to come.  These characters were all so fantastic that I just really care about how their relationships end up.

Dad Meeting

I kept waiting for a nice sit down conversation between Joon Ho and Gwang Ho.  Joon Ho is the kind of guy who would want to have a heart to heart about his fears and intentions.  As he himself admitted, Young Woo isn’t the kind of person you can just casually date.  And discussing the situation with her father would be good for both of them.  Especially once Joon Ho knew that Gwang Ho had seen them together.  Obviously, they will meet at some point next season, but I think a scene between the two of them early on would have been really touching.

 “Villain” Motivation

I understand that Han Seon Young doesn’t like Tae Soo Mi.  Maybe they just had a really strong rivalry back in law school.  But her intense hatred seems like more than just hard feelings.  I don’t feel like we ever get a clear picture as to why the two of them are sworn enemies.  I wondered if they were going to make it a love triangle between them and Gwang Ho.  There were plenty of hints that could be used to support that.  But instead, we are left with no real explanation as to where the bad blood started, or if it was at all justified.

Extraordinary Attorney Woo - Full Review

The Ending

After announcing a second season, I am thankful that “Extraordinary Attorney Woo” didn’t leave us on a cliff hanger.  While certain stories lacked ful closure, at least we weren’t left with burning unanswered questions.  Most of this episode was spent on Young Woo’s younger brother’s trial.  In the end, he is able to testity and the case is dismissed.  Since Tae Soo Mi voluntarily steps down from her candidancy for Minister of Justice, Han Seon Young decides to keep Young Woo’s birth secret private.  In the midst of trial preparations, we get a very short scene where Joon Ho tells Young Woo she does make him happy and he doesn’t want to break up.  She agrees that they should get back together before quickly jumping out of the car and running off to do her business. It wasn’t the flashy declaration we may have expected, but it is totally Young Woo!  The gang gathers for a work party to celebrate their victory, and Myung Seok shows up with his ex-wife, so things seem to be going in the right direction for them.  In the final scene, Young Woo tells her dad that she has become a full time employee, before happily skipping off to work.  And for the first time, she navigates the revolving door with no problem.  Joon Ho is on the other side, and as we come full circle, Young Woo identifies a new emotion she is experiencing;  Accomplishment.  Cue the strings, until next season.

Should I Watch

Extraordinary Attorney Woo - Unspoiled Review

“Extraordinary Attorney Woo” is a highly praised legal drama with a fair amount of romance thrown in.  After finally completing this series, I have to say I agree with all the positive buzz.  This has a life drama feel. It’s more about the joys and struggles of living with Autism Spectrum Disorder daily than about a large-scale plot with heroes, villains, and a grand conclusion.  The heroes are imperfect at best, and the villains are more misguided and irritating than despicable, but they all feel human. The strength of this series lies in an outstanding cast, interesting legal battles, and a heartwarming and enlightening glimpse into the heart and mind of someone with ASD. I give “Extraordinary Attorney Woo” a 10 out of 10 ramen.

Ahn Joon Ho enters the military with little fanfare.  He finishes his part-time job, jumps on his employers motorbike and drives himself to the check-in.  He is one of the few men without friends and family there to see him off.  Based on his height alone, Joon Ho becomes a military police officer.  And then a chance encounter with a superior gets him recruited into the Deserter Pursuit Team.  Though his first case ends in disaster, he is eventually paired with his new partner Han Hol Yul.  Together the pair rely on street smarts and a good bit of improv acting to find the army deserters they are chasing.  But Joon Ho is conflicted by his empathy for their situations and guilt that he never tried to stop the abuse he saw firsthand.

D.P. - Unspoiled Review

Ahn Jun Ho grew up with an abusive father and a mother who was more scared of living without him than her own safety.  Because of this, he knows what it feels like to be a victim.  He seems to have a natural ability to analyze the situation and predict a person’s actions and motivations. But he also understands that bringing these soldiers back without making any efforts to change the cycle of abuse only puts them in further danger.  I am almost embarrassed to give the same fangirl rant about Jung Hae In’s acting here as I did for “Snowdrop” earlier in the year…almost!  This guy has such expressive features and is able to convey such a wide range of emotions easily.  He does a fantastic job with this complex character. I love to see him in these challenging and impactful roles and I can’t wait to see what he will do next in Season 2.

Koo Kyo Hwan as Han Ho Yul

Han Ho Yul is sick in the hospital when Joon Ho goes on his first case, but he comes back to find himself partnered with the rookie.  He immediately takes Joon Ho under his wing.  Although Joon Ho isn’t sure who to trust in the beginning, Ho Yul eventually earns his trust and begins to break through Joon Ho’s cool exterior.  Because of his seniority, Ho Yul is not subjected to the same bullying as the newer soldiers, and he does his best to step in and protect Joon Ho any way he can.  The longer they work together, the closer they become, with Ho Yul once declaring that he is sure they must have been married in a past life!

D.P. - Unspoiled Review

Han Ho Yul is relaxed and easy going, but he is also committed to his work in the DP.  While he enjoys his time back in civilian life, he never ignores his duties to find the men they are sent to search for.  He really doesn’t give Joon Ho any choice but to be his friend, as he proves by showing up announced at Joon Ho’s mother’s house.  This kind of friend is the perfect partner for Joon Ho’s reserved, careful personality.  Koo Kyo Hwan is so likable in this role.  I loved his breezy approach to life and their job, and Koo Kyo Hwan portrayed it perfectly.

Kim Sung Kyun as Park Bum Goo

Sergeant First Class Park Bum Goo is the unit leader of the Deserter Pursuit Team.  He is worn out and sick of being passed over for promotion despite his best efforts.  But while those at the top are more concerned with public opinion and the military’s reputation, Bum Goo is always looking out for his team members and their safety.

Son Seok Koo as Im Ji Sup

Captain Im Ji Sup is brought in from another base to supervise Park Bum Goo and the whole Military Police Department.  As a new supervisor, he doesn’t know any of the men personally and is really only concerned with having the Department be successful.  He and Park Bum Goo are always competing and at odds with each other.

Shin Seung Ho as Hwang Jang Soo

Sergeant Hwang Jang Soo is the unit leader of the Military Police Unit. He is the villain of this drama who uses his position to bully and abuse the newest and weakest soldiers.  He is made even more bold by the fact that his enlistment period is almost over.  Later, when challenged by Cho Suk Bong about why he hurt him and others, Hwang Jang Soo simply replied, “Because I thought it was okay.”

Things I Liked

 ♥ No Whitewashing

If you are going to take on such a difficult and controversial subject as bullying and abuse, you really need to commit to the unsavoryness of it all.  If this drama had pulled back or tried to brush over some of the more painful details, it would not have carried the same message.  “D.P.” never shies away from the stark truth of this issue.  There are no rescues or happy ending, and even those not directly involved bare some guilt for not speaking up for the victims.  It’s not always easy to watch, but it is stirring.

 ♥ Outcomes

I liked how every case in this series has a different ending.  This is not your average “good guys search for the missing person, run into trouble, but always outsmart him in the end” kind of show.  There is no predicting what will eventually happen with each deserter.  Whether he is caught, kills himself, or promises to turn himself in later, each soldier has a conclusion that is as individual as his story.

♥ Theme of Mothers

The theme of mothers carries throughout this drama in a fascinating way.  Ho Yul wisely observes that soldiers always want to go home to their mothers.  Joon Ho’s own relationship with his mother is the source of his anger and frustration.  And as he watches case after case of good people reaching their breaking point after endless abuse, he worries more and more that his mother could do the same.  And most heartbreaking of all, with Suk Bong’s final breaths, he calls out for his mother.

Things I Didn’t Like

 Ho Yul’s Backstory

Ho Yul is such a fun and interesting character, but I wished we had found out more about his backstory.  We know almost nothing about him or his life outside of the Deserter Pursuit Team.  I understand that this is a short series with limited epsiodes, but I feel like we know so much about Joon Ho.  It hardly seems fair.  It would help to know more about what shapes and motivates Ho Yul too.

Chi Do

Chi Do’s character is very unique because he is the only one who doesn’t run away because of  bullying, and the only one Joon Ho and Ho Yul allow to get away.  I’m so curious about whether Chi Do kept his end of the bargain.  Did he actually take care of his grandmother and then turn himself in? I feel like seeing him come back would have made his story even more interesting and bittersweet.

 What Happens Next?

Obviously this series is more about the pursuit than the catching, but I couldn’t help but wonder what happens next for the few soldiers who were caught.  Do they serve time in military prison?  Are they eventually dishonorably discharged?  The way they talked about it made it seem like they just went back to their original posts, but Desertion is a serious crime, so that seems unlikely.  I would like to have seen Joon Ho follow up with at least one case to give us an idea of where they are now.

The Ending

“D.P” is intense all the way until the extra scene after the credits.  The final case is Suk Bong, who we have watched get bullied through the whole season.  Coming full circle, Suk Bong, just like Joon Ho’s first case, ends up killing himself, this time in a violent stand-off with everyone watching.  Later we see Im Ji Sup packing his things to transfer to a new unit.  The new recruits gather outside with a new supervisor.  But standing alone in the back of the group is Joon Ho.  As everyone finishes their drill and runs off for some kind of party, Joon Ho stands alone.  As the screen fades to black, we see him run the other way, his footsteps echoing through the empty frame.  Has he finally become a deserter himself?  As credits role, we see him meeting with the sister of his first case, at the soldier’s memorial.  Tearfully, she asks why no one, Joon Ho included, ever tried to stop the bullying.  Joon Ho’s guit is obvious, but he has no answer.  After the credits, we hear soldiers talking about Suk Bong’s “suicide attempt”.  Suk Bong’s friend and comic clubmate, Luffy, comes in from duty.  As the other soldiers begin tormenting him and calling him names, he calmly draws his weapon and opens fire as the screen fades for the final time.

Should I Watch

D.P. - Unspoiled Review

“D.P.” is a dark, intense action drama about military deserters and the search to return them to their stations.  This series focuses on the abuse and bullying, both physical and emotional, that are widespread in the Korean Armed Forces.  It is raw and honest, and the violence is often hard to watch, but it is not gratuitous.  Though there are moments of well-timed comic relief, there is no romance or fluff to be found.  At only 6 episodes, it is fast-paced and to the point. The stories are compelling and the acting is well-done.  The drama has won several awards and its popularity earned it a second season, which has already been filmed and should air early in 2023.      I give “D.P.” a 9 out of 10 ramen.

The Story

Under the Queen's Umbrella - Full Review

The life of a Queen is never easy.  Queen Im Hwa Ryung is in charge of a whole passel of princes, including her own 5 sons and the son’s of the Royal Consorts.  Her own children have coasted through their childhood on the belief that their eldest son would become King and they would be left to live their lives as they please.  Their mischievous antics have been a constant headache for the Queen.  But when tragedy strikes the palace, the need for each of the Prince’s to take his role in the royal family seriously becomes imperative.  Now the Queen will have to tame this group of troublemakers into distinguished royal princes.  And as a royal competition heats up, rivals and enemies will come at them from all sides.

Kim Hye Soo as Queen Im Hwa Ryung

Queen Im Hwa Ryung is the mother of 5 Princes.  While her eldest son has spent his life preparing for the role of King, her other 4 have spent their time pursing their own individual interests and causing trouble.  But when life at the palace takes a troubling turn, she becomes increasingly aware of the danger they could all be in if one of them does not step forward as a potential Crown Prince.  And as the fight heats up, new alliances are formed and past secrets are revealed.  Through it all, she will do her best to protect not just her own children, but all of those who are under her care.  As the Mother of the Nation, being a queen is never easy.

Under the Queen's Umbrella - Full Review

The Queen is passionate and devoted to her children and her duties.  She is unswervingly fair and confident in the abilities of her sons.  Her low social standing made the Queen Dowager and others believe she would be easy to manipulate and control.  But years of fighting against their deceit and mistreatment has given the Queen an assured strength they never expected.  Kim Hye Soo was fabulous in this role.  I loved everything about her portrayal of this nurturing character with a heart of gold, but also a firm conviction that the privileges that each of them have been afforded comes with great responsibility.  What an amazing example of motherhood she managed to show!

Moon Sang Min as Grand Prince Sung Nam

As the second oldest son of the Queen, Sung Nam was the closest to the Crown Prince.  The Crown Prince’s untimely death was shocking and devastating for him.  But, once his grief lessens a bit, he knows he must be the one to take his place.  And while the competition for Crown Prince is important, Sung Nam is also adamant about helping his mother find out the true cause of his brother’s death and who is behind it.  The competion outside of the palace walls also brings him another unlikely supporter who seems fated to stand by his side.  But prejudice against him, a  birth secret, and a revenge years in the making may ruin his chance to become the next Crown Prince.

Under the Queen's Umbrella - Full Review

Because Sung Nam was forced to grow up outside the palace walls, he is more emotionally guarded than his other brothers.  But the brothers are quick to point out to the Crown Princess that while he may seem prickly and hard to get to know from the outside, he is actually the most warmhearted of them all.  He is serious and quiet, but he has inherited his mother’s strong inner strength and fierce need for justice.  As a Crown Prince who has spent much of his life outside of the Palace, he brings a fresh perspective and a love of the people they rule that will make him an excellent King some day.  I enjoyed Moon Sang Min in this role.  This is my first time watching him in a drama, but I loved the warmth behind his cool exterior.  It felt very genuine and realistic.

Under the Queen's Umbrella - Full Review

Kim Hae Sook as Queen Dowager Cho

Queen Dowager Cho was a consort who killed the reigning Crown Prince to put her own son on the throne.  She is ruthless and calculating, and her loyalties lie with whoever can help her most at any given time.  While she is devoted to her son, she is more concerned with her own power within the walls of the palace.  Her position with the other Court Officials makes her a dangerous enemy and a worthy opponent.

Choi Won Young as King Lee Ho

King Lee Ho is the reigning King.  He bears guilt for the way he became the King and the actions of his mother and his other supporters.  He is a caring father to all of his sons, although his busy life and lofty position don’t allow him to spend much time with any of them.  While he has had numerous consorts, he has remained supportive and trusting of the Queen.

Under the Queen's Umbrella - Full Review

Chani as Prince Ui Sung

Prince Ui Sung is the first born son of King Lee Ho.  His mother still resents the fact that Im Hwa Ryung was crowned Queen instead of her.  And she has raised him to believe he has every reason to become the Crown Prince and future King.  Because of this, Ui Sung is proud and competitive.  He doesn’t get along with any of the other Princes.

Things I Liked

 ♥ King and Queen

I thought the relationship between the King and Queen was very interesting.  Usually this relationship is either still blissfully happy or they barely stand the sight of each other.  In this case, Lee Ho’s attentions have definitely wandered, as evidenced by the large number of Consorts and Princes living in the palace.  But despite this, he and the Queen have a very down to earth affection and respect for each other.  The King is always careful to be considerate of her opinions and feelings, even if it makes the Queen Dowager unhappy.   It was a middle ground that doesn’t seemed to be explored often, and I appreciated it for that reason.

 ♥ Brother Bond

The scenes between the Queen’s sons were so fun to watch.  The cast had a great chemistry.  It was nice that at least among her children, the bond was genuine and without any competitive grumbling.  Although I would have loved more time to explore each of their own stories and interests, at least we got to see a touch of each one’s individual personality.  Those interests did trickle into their scenes together in subtle and realistic ways.  As the final scenes with each Prince proves, they have very different and distinct paths to follow into the future, but they will always love and support each other.

♥ Sung Nam and Grand Heir

The few scenes that we got with Sung Nam and the Grand Heir, Won Son, were so cute and sweet.  Their relationship was obviously special, even before the death of the Crown Prince.  I also liked that he was able to bring him back to the palace, just as he had promised all along.  And it seems like Sung Nam was being sincere when he revealed his plan to keep the Kingdom safe, until he could hand it back to his nephew to rule, when the time comes.

Things I Didn’t Like

 Prince Stories

With all of those Princes, it would have been easy to lose track of who was who.  But as things went on, and especially around the time of the competition, they did a nice job of making each one unique in some way.  So I was disappointed when all but the Queen’s sons kind of disappear toward the end of the drama.  Especially for Bo Gum and Sim So, I felt like they got dropped for the palace intrigue and then showed up at the very end for a rushed conclusion.  It would have been nice to see them sprinkled through some of the other scenes in the last few episodes.

“Queen” Yoon

By the end of this one, my head hurt with trying to navigate the increasingly complicated royal family tree.  Not only are the Crown Prince’s widow and son welcomed back into the fold, but also Queen Yoon.  As I said earlier, I assume that the Grand Heir will indeed stay the Grand Heir and inherit the throne when he is old enough.  But what is Queen Yoon’s role?  Is she still a Queen?  And if she was pardoned for her role in the rebellion, what about her grandson, Prince Ui Sung.  Has she reached out to him and Consort Hwang as her only remaining family members? Her role seems confusing to me.

 Court Lady Nam

Most of the villains in this drama are either dead or exiled somewhere away from the palace.  But I couldn’t help but wonder whatever happened to Court Lady Nam.  Maybe even more than some of the more obvious villains, she was personally responsible for carrying out most of the Queen Dowager’s evil deeds.  Was she held accountable for her actions in any way?  I can’t imagine that they let her stay in the palace after everything had come to light.

Under the Queen's Umbrella - Full Review

The Ending

“Under the Queen’s Umbrella” has plenty to wrap up in the end, and, although a bit rushed in places, I think they did a fine job.  The Rebellion is put down pretty much before it even starts, with the Chief State Counselor and Ik Hyeon being the only casualties.  The King finally decides to put the full truth behind his brother and son’s deaths into the history annals and let the people decide how he will be remembered. He sentences the Queen Dowager to confinement in her quarters, but she has other ideas.  Putting on her ceremonial clothes, she dies, presumable by taking the cuckoo pint given to her by the Queen, judging by the gift box placed prominently on her table.  With the truth finally revealed, Sung Nam brings home Lady Min and the Grand Heir.  And Lady Yoon is reinstated in the palace.  Consort Hwang and Ui Sung are living outside in the nearby village.  The Queen is keeping a close eye on him in case he tries to cause any more trouble.  But Consort Hwang is living in denial, still believing they are back in the palace, and refuses to let Ui Sung out of her sight long enough for him to be much of a problem.  Prince Bo Gum is living outside, but making frequent trips in to visit Sung Nam and his mother.  As for our troublemaking brothers, each is choosing his own path.   Mu Ahn marries his girlfriend and spends his time getting child-rearing advice from the remaining Consorts.  Gye Sung decides to travel the world and be true to himself for the first time in his life.  And Il Yung continues to invent and study science and astronomy. Sung Nam is devoted to Chung Ha and their unborn child.  He is slowly checking items off her bucket list and finally seems happy and relaxed.  And the Queen is still rushing around to keep the palace and all its residents in check!

Should I Watch

Under the Queen's Umbrella - Unspoiled Review

“Under the Queen’s Umbrella” is a historical drama that offers it’s fair share of political intrigue, romance, and revenge tales.  It is a drama more concerned with character development than historical accuracy.  But that does not take away from it’s appropriate portrayal of daily life and palace dynamics during the Joseon period. At it’s root, this is a story about a strong, passionate Queen and her love for her children. Unlike many other historical dramas, romance takes a back seat to family relationship here.  But there is love to be found in the background!  This series started with big goals to include so many characters and storylines into a standard 16 episode format.  But in my opinion, they succeeded in creating a story that is well-developed and heartwarming. I give “Under the Queen’s Umbrella” a 10 out of 10 ramen.
