Seo In Guk as Nam Han Joon

Nam Han Joon is famous as the handsome, successful shaman of Minamdang.  His talent at reading people and his sister’s tech  skills assure that his predictions are never wrong.  But despite all their abilities, one case still alludes them; finding the person who killed Han Joon’s best friend and framed Han Joon for the crime. When their team’s private investigation crosses paths with a tough, talented detective, they find that they both share an interest in the old case and Han Joon’s friend.  But Han Joon’s out-of-the-box techniques may be more than a detective devoted to the system can handle.

Cafe Minamdang - Full Review

Nam Han Joon is intelligent and charming.  His ability to win the hearts of ladies has made their cafe and his shaman business an overwhelming success.  But while he loves being rich and extravagant, he is compelled more by the desire to find the killer known as “Gopuri”.  This was a fun role for Seo In Guk and it was nice to see a lighter, more comical side to his acting.  He fit the role to a T and his performance really held the drama together.

Oh Yeon Seo as Han Jae Hee

From the time she was a child, Han Jae Hee was interested in martial arts.  And a childhood crush on a young police cadet set her on a career path that has never wavered. But after her brother’s tragic death, she changes her name and joins the police force with her new identity.  When an investigation brings her face to face with her old crush, she is thankful that he doesn’t recognize her as the awkward young girl who followed him around.  But his involvement in her brother’s death draws her to him, as they both search to find the truth of what happened that night.

Cafe Minamdang - Full Review

Han Jae Hee is known as the “ghost homicide detective”.  She is determined and fearless in the face of criminals.  But her brother’s death left a shadow on her heart that has never healed.  Oh Yeon Seo has played several of these outrageously outspoken characters, and she plays up to the intensity well.  Unfortunately, Jae Hee has a tendency to be all bluster without much substance. A bit more depth to her character would have been nice.

Kang Mi Na as Nam Hye Joon

Nam Hye Joon is Han Joon’s sister. She used to work for the NIS.  Now she uses her tech skills to help Han Joon both with his shaman performances and his more private investigation into the person behind his friend’s death and his arrest.  She falls in love with Gong Soo Cheol, and tries to keep their relationship a secret from her brother.  But Han Joon is smarter than they give him credit for.

Kwak Shi Yang as Gong Soo Cheol

Soo Cheol was a detective before he was fired unfairly.  Now he works as a barista during the day at Cafe Minamdang, while still using his detective skills to help Han Joon after hours.  Han Joon is his best friend, and he is completely devoted to him.  When Soo Cheol falls in love with Hye Joon he is overcome with guilt and worry that Han Joon won’t approve of him as a suitable suitor.

Kwon Soo Hyun as Cha Do Won

Cha Do Won is a straight-laced prosecutor who is known for his ability to bore those he is interrogating into compliance.  He has had a crush on Jae Hee for years, but while she has always depended on his friendship, she has never had romantic feelings for him.  Behind his just, law-abiding prosecutor personae, Do Won is actually the villain who killed Jae Hee’s brother and many others.

Things I Liked

 ♥ Mom

The character of Han Joon and Hye Joon’s mother “Deacon Kim” was very funny.  The lengths the group goes to hide Han Joon’s identity as the great shaman is well played.  And her delicate christian sensibilities are presented with just the right touch of subtle humor.  And that made it doubly funny to watch her find out that her son is the shaman her church friends are visiting.  And also when the group try to explain that the whole thing is really just one big ruse.

♥ Stereotype Reversals

This drama made a couple fun reversals on the usual stereotypes that added to the comic touch.  The most obvious was the weak man begging to not be hit while the woman acts as his protector and shield.  But also, having the sister live in a pig sty while her brother is the clean freak.  Both situations were just subtly absurd enough to give me a giggle.

 ♥ Psychological Twist

Although the shift in this drama from silly comedy to psychological thriller was a bit much for some fans, I appreciated the unique twist the story created.  Although I was suspicious of the prosecutor, the idea of a young psychopath getting hypnotized into becoming a warrior of justice was an interesting touch I couldn’t have predicted.  And it made his character much more complex than the usual evil villain.

Things I Didn’t Like

Villain Ladder

This is a pretty common formula for crime mystery dramas.  They chase after some evil villain and then when they catch them, they find out that there is someone more evil.  And this repeats multiple times.  It’s not necessarily bad, but it can be pretty redundant over time.  This drama did it enough times that it started to seem like it might never end.  By the end, many of the bad guys in the earlier episodes had been long forgotten.  They could have cut out a villain or 2 and gone with fewer episodes.

.

Time Lines and Ages

Because this drama jumped around quite a bit in time, some of the timelines and age differences seemed to veer off-track.  For example, the age gap between Han Joon and Jae Hee seemed to be much bigger when they were young, but hardly any in the present story.  And Aunt Lim’s age seemed to jump all over, especially when considering the scenes where she was an adult and Tae Soo and Do Won were children.  Was she frozen in time in between? Because she didn’t seem much older than them later on.  These kinds of inconsistencies were distracting for me.

 Inconsistent Character

It’s not unusual in kdramas to start with over the top silliness that eventually calms into an actual plot.  But this drama started with some large personalities that seemed to loose all those unique traits as things went on.  Hye Joon’s messy room and crumpled clothes fell to the wayside for beautiful straight hair and a more put together appearance as a whole.  The prosecutor’s habit of filling with air with boring trivia points also disappears and never comes back.  It just made the characters feel inconsistent and a bit more boring in the later episodes.

The Ending

Things wrap up for “Cafe Minamdang” pretty much the way you would expect.  Do Won’s true character is finally revealed and he is arrested.  However, he still refuses to show any remorse for his actions, standing by the idea that he only killed those who deserved it anyway, with a slight exception for Jae Hee’s brother.  Han Joon had hoped to leave the life of a shaman behind after catching Gopuri, but his team was quick to remind him that they hadn’t finished paying off their debts.  So he agrees to keep the cafe open on the condition that he get a 6 month vacation to travel.  Initially Jae Hee refuses to go with him, saying she is happiest working. But a sudden suspension makes her change her mind.  She and Han Joon are just unwinding on their vacation when some other vacationers find a dead body floating in the water.  So, the detective/cafe squad is back in action.

Should I Watch

Cafe Minamdong - Unspoiled Review

“Cafe Minamdang” is a unique crime drama that combines absurd comedy with an engaging psychological thriller that will keep you on your toes.  Despite the fact that the main character is a “shaman” there aren’t many real supernatural fantasy elements. They are mostly just some talented grifters with all the right information. The over the top comedy scenes made for some larger than life characters who were both funny and endearing.  And Seo In Guk’s absolute charm really carries the main parts of this drama, with his perfect comedic timing and razor wit. Whether fighting or flirting, he and Oh Yeon Seo have a  fun chemistry.  If you are a Seo In Guk fan, you should definitely make time for this one.  I give “Cafe Minamdang” an 8 out of 10 ramen.
