Welcome to Samdal-ri - Unspoiled Review

“Welcome to Samdal-ri” is a warm, healing romantic drama about fresh starts, friends, and family.  This drama contains all the elements that I love.  It has a beautiful slow-burn romance, interesting characters and relationships, and warm scenery and writing.  Plus the leads are two of my favorites.  Where this drama fell short for me was in how they dispersed screentime for the secondary characters, focusing more on the characters without their own backstories. I also felt like the leads sometimes acted rather immature for grown adults.  But despite a couple pitfalls and heavy-handed tropes, I loved the warm, slow pace of this drama and the healing story it told.    I give “Welcome to Samdal-ri” an 8 out of 10 ramen.

The Leads

Welcome to Samdal-ri - Full Review
Welcome to Samdal-ri - Full Review

Ji Chang Wook as Cho Yong Pil

Cho Yong Pil grew up in a small town on Jeju Island and stayed there to pursue a career with the Meteorological Association.  Besides work, Yong Pil helps watch over the aging haenyeo in the community.  But when his childhood best friend and former girlfriend, suddenly  moves home, he is forced to relive the heartbreak of their breakup.  And he begins to wonder if there isn’t a way for them to finally be together again.  After all, he has never stopped loving her, and there are secrets about why he had to break up with her which it might be time to finally bring to the light.

Welcome to Samdal-ri - Full Review

Despite a stable job, and being surrounded by both family, biological and chosen, and the friends he has grown up with, Yong Pil lives with deep regret.  Responsibilities to his community and his adopted mother have resulted in him giving up both the love of his life and his career dreams.  But for the first time in his life, Yong Pil is considering putting himself first for once, and grasping at this second chance for love and happiness.  Ji Chang Wook is one of my favorite actors, and I love to see him taking on such diverse roles.  But its always nice to see him go back to these kinds of roles, where he taps into his more quiet, charming side.

Shin Hye Sun as Cho Sam Dal / Cho Eun Hye

Cho Eun Hye is a successful fashion photographer who takes pictures for some of the most famous faces in Korea.  But when her boyfriend cheats on her and her assistant publically accuses her of bullying, she decides to go home to Jeju Island and stay with her parents until the media storm blows over.  Back home, among the friends and family that she grew up with, she is known as Cho Sam Dal.  And everyone is thrilled to have Sam Dal back in their lives.  But being home with the childhood best friend she has spent years trying to forget is not easy.  And as the couple fall into old patterns, Sam Dal isn’t sure she can go on without him.

Welcome to Samdal-ri - Full Review

Cho Sam Dal is bold and confident.  She has always had big dreams and stops at nothing to achieve them.  But after her breakup with Yong Pil, Sam Dal becomes a workaholic whose single-minded ambition takes the place of balance and happiness.  And after 4 failed relationships, she is no closer to getting over Yong Pil.  I love Shin Hye Sun as an actress, and although I found Sam Dal’s immaturity to be a bit irritating at times, I feel like Shin Hye Sun played the role the way it needed to be played.  There were times when I felt like the writing for this character could have been better, but it didn’t stop me from enjoying her performance over all.

Supporting Characters

Welcome to Samdal-ri - Full Review

Kim Mi Kyung as Go Mi Ja

Go Mi Ja is Sam Dal’s mother.  She has spent her life as a haenyeo and is now the chief haenyeo for their community. She was best friends with Yong Pil’s mother, before she died in a tragic diving accident.  And since that day, Mi Ja has cared for Yong Pil as if he were her own son.  But Yong Pil’s father has never forgiven her for his wife’s death or the part she played in encouraging her dive that day.

Jo Yoon Seo as Bang Eun Joo

Bang Eun Joo is Cho Eun Hye’s assistant.  She is the one who Eun Hye’s boyfriend cheated with and she is also the source of the rumors that brought down Eun Hye’s career.  Eun Joo is greedy and mean-spirited.  And although Eun Hye has always tried to mentor her, Eun Joo is too proud to take any of her advice seriously or learn anything from Eun Hye’s natural talents.

Welcome to Samdal-ri - Full Review

Kang Young Seok as Boo Sang Do

Boo Sang Do is part of the childhood group that Yong Pil and Sam Dal grew up with.  Though his family struggled financially when they were all young, they have found success by running a family restaurant that is famous in the area.  Sang Do has always had a crush on Sam Dal, but he could never get between her and Yong Pil long enough to finally confess his feelings to her.  Now that she is back, Sang Do knows this is his last chance to win her heart, but, as always, Yong Pil seems to be a step ahead.

Things I Liked

 ♥ Jeju Setting

I really love dramas set on Jeju.  First of all, the peaceful blues of sky and sea give these slow burn dramas just the right amount of calming energy.  And second, the traditions of things like the haenyeo are fascinating as a backdrop.  This is the kind of setting that drops me into my own private little bubble, as I watch the story slowly unfold.  I know that mood and tempo is not for everyone, but I enjoy it.

♥ Cha Ha Yul

The addition of the child actress who played Cha Ha Yul to this drama was really nice.  As a character, her maturity as the voice of reason among the chaotic Cho sisters was always cute.  And I liked that she was at once so wise and reasonable while also showing that she was still very much a sensitive and impressionable child .  They did a nice job of showing the balance at work in her character and her relationships.

♥ Yong Pil and Mi Ja

The relationship between Yong Pil and Mi Ja was all the more sweet based on their common past and the fact that he is not her biological son.  It must have been a great comfort to them both.  And the idea that Yong Pil gave up the two things he wanted most in life to protect and take care of Mi Ja was heartwarming.  They did a nice job of showing how natural and easy their relationship is.  And Mi Ja was able to keep her promise to watch over her best friend’s son and always love him like her own.

Welcome to Samdal-ri - Full Review

Things I Didn’t Like

Focus on Friends

One of the weirdest things for me about this drama is that they built great backstories for each of the sister’s and then barely gave them any development.  Meanwhile, they spent plenty of time on the “Power Rangers”, who I loved, but they didn’t really have their own stories.  Honestly I loved Mr. Dolphin Dad, Gong Ji Chan, and I really wanted more screen time for them as a sweet new family.  So maybe I’m just biased.  But I felt like, if they were going to spend so much time on the friend group, then they needed to have more individual stories.

Boring Villain

Bang Eun Joo is a seriously flat villain.  Yes, what she did was terrible.  But she does it with such a lack of flair that it’s almost hard to even resent her for it.  Her character is one-dimensional and her shallow motives mostly just seem pathetic.  I actually thought she and Cheon Chung Gi deserved each other.  I certainly didn’t like her character, but i didn’t really hate her either.  And really, that’s the problem.  Why bother to paint a villain if their story is so uninteresting?

Too Innocent

I’ve made mention of this a couple times already, but I didn’t understand the complete naivete of Sam Dal.  I mean, Yong Pil hasn’t dated anyone since Sam Dal, so him acting like an innocent school boy at least makes some sense.  But after years of living and working in the city and 4 other romantic relationships, whether they were successful or not, you would think that Sam Dal wouldn’t blush every time there is the slightest skinship or mention of skinship.  I really thought they overplayed that element of her personality.  Even if they had just toned it down a bit, I think fans would have been more receptive to Sam Dal’s character.

Welcome to Samdal-ri - Full Review

The Ending

“Welcome to Samdal-ri” gives us a nice happily ever after.  With a little help from her friends, both from Seoul and Jeju, the truth is finally revealed about Eun Joo.  And Eun Hye’s name is cleared so she can return to the work she loves.  But she won’t be going alone, since everyone except Yong Pil has decided to go with her.  Yong Pil’s father finally forgives Sam Dal and her mom, clearing the way for them to date officially.  Sam Dal finds out that Yong Pil is going to turn down his dream job and encourages him to go.  The sisters both get a second chance at love with their guy.  And Hae Dal decides to become a haenyo and watch over their mom.  Two years later, the friends have all established lives in the city.  Including a girlfriend for Kyung Tae.  The ending scene shows them gathered together before Sam Dal walks home  in the snow, thinking about Yong Pil.  And suddenly he is standing in front of her.  The couple share a sweet reunion and seem truly grateful to be together again.  And back in Jeju, the father’s sit down to share a drink and finally lay aside their grudges.

My Lovely Liar - Unspoiled Review

“My Lovely Liar” is a mystery rom-com.  For me, the love story for this drama was sweet and fun to watch.  But, despite a wealth of supporting characters, the drama fell short at providing interesting side plots or establishing a riveting murder mystery.  If you are just looking for a simple fantasy romance, this one isn’t a bad watch.  But if you are looking for strong story elements and exciting mystery, this is probably not it.     I give “My Lovely Liar” a 7 out of 10 ramen.

When she was young, Mok Sol Hee discovered that she could hear a sound when someone near her was lying.  Growing up, she used the “gift” as her livelihood, farming out her services to those who needed to know the truth.  Since, a human lie detector power seems far-fetched, she disguises herself as a shaman, which seems easier for people to believe.  But her life is often lonely.  So when a man who seems like a quiet loner moves in next door, she immediately recognizes a kindred spirit.  And when she learns that he has been wrongly accused of a crime she is certain he didn’t commit, she partners up with him, using her powers where she can, to try to clear his name once and for all.

My Lovely Liar - Full Review

Mok Sol Hee’s superpower has been both a blessing and a curse in life.  When she was young, her need to tell the truth got her mother arrested, and as she got older, it ruined friendships and romantic relationships.  But when she meets Kim Do Ha, she realizes that not everyone is good at hiding the truth.  Do Ha’s inability to lie is the biggest green flag she has ever seen!  But it also teaches her that sometimes the truth and lies are not as black and white as she has always treated them.  I always enjoy Kim So Hyun, and she was good in this role.  I don’t know that I saw anything that blew me out of the water, but she handled the role well and her chemistry with Hwang Min Hyun maded the drama very enjoyable.

Hwang Min Hyun as Kim Do Ha

Kim Do Ha was accused of killing his girlfriend when he was a college student.  But his mother, who was a well-connected politician, paid off the police to dismiss the case.  Although he was declared as innocent, he has spend the last years in hiding, always wearing a mask wherever he goes.  He is a successful composer, who writes music in the privacy of his own home, and then hands it off to his best friend, Jo Deuk Chan, who owns a pop music label.  But when a rumor about him and a young pop star goes viral, Do Ha is forced to hide out in an extra apartment owned by Deuk Chan.  And when he keeps running into his beautiful new neighbor, he finds himself actually interested in life outside of his own 4 walls, and the possibility of finding love again.

My Lovely Liar - Full Review

Kim Do Ha has never had a great relationship with his mother, and after a toxic relationship with his high school girlfriend, he has become cold and withdrawn.  The only person he trusts is his old friend Deuk Chan.  But when he meets Sol Hee, his frosty exterior starts to melt away.  Her straightforward attitude and unwavering support, even when he believes he is responsible for Eum Ji’s death, win his trust and eventually his love.  Hwang Min Hyun has gained quite a following since starring in “Alchemy of Souls” and I expect we will continue to see him in upcoming dramas.  He is ackwardly charming and reflects a sweet disposition that makes him good for these quiet, misunderstood kinds of characters.

My Lovely Liar - Full Review

Seo Ji Hoon as Lee Kang Min

Lee Kang Min was Sol Hee’s boyfriend when they were younger.  He had intended to propose to her, but an unexpected diagnosis of stomach cancer changed all that.  And when he lied about the reason he was breaking up with her, she never guessed that he was lying for her benefit, not his own.  He begins a new job as a detective in Sol Hee’s neighborhood, with the hopes of winning her back, now that his cancer is in remission.  But he soon finds out that he is too late, and Sol Hee is moving on with her handsome new neighbor.

Yun Ji On as Jo Deuk Chan

Jo Deuk Chan is Do Ha’s best friend from high school.  After Do Ha was arrested and cleared, the pair started a music label that would allow Deuk Chan to run everything from the top while Do Ha wrote award-winning music in secret, under a pseudonym.  But what Do Ha never imagined, is that there is another reason Deuk Chan has stayed by his side all these years.  He has had romantic feelings for his friend since high school, but he has never had the courage to admit it to anyone.  And those feelings led to a fatal accident he has kept hidden.

Lee Si Woo as Syaon

Syaon is the top artist at Deuk Chan’s label.  She has made a career by singing Do Ha’s music.  And that connection has caused her to develop a crush on her song writer.  Although she has not been shy about making her feelings known, Do Ha has been very firm with her that he sees her only as a close friend.  Syaon is not at all happy when Sol Hee shows up on the scene, but she soon figures out that she doesn’t stand a chance with Do Ha.

Things I Liked

 ♥ Exposing the Gray

I love the way this drama played with the idea that truth and lies are not as simple to discern as we may think, even if we were a human lie detector.  The fact is that the truth is often a murky shade of gray and not all liars are motivated by some kind of evil disregard for the truth.  There are white lies, that we tell to save someone’s feelings or pride and there are lies that we tell because we have convinced ourselves that they are true.  Sometimes knowing the truth causes us to miss the motivations of certain lies.  Right or wrong, this is a great reminder that lies come in all shapes and sizes.

♥ Liar Hunter Cases

I enjoyed watching Sol Hee go out on her “liar hunter” cases, especially in the first few episodes.  Watching her at work does a nice job of developing some elements of her character.  And they did a nice job of bringing those characters back later in the drama.  I kind of wish they had continued to show this element of the story.  It gave some nice variation to the plot.  Rather than having such a large cast of secondary characters who all seem to have undeveloped stories, it seems like it would have been better to follow a more episodic approach, with the cases forming the frame.

♥ Jang Jung Gyu

I really enjoyed the relationship between Do Ha and the local jazz club owner and musician, Jang Jung Gyu.  Jung Su is  proof that Deuk Chan is not the only one Do Ha has, even if he doesn’t exactly know it.  Somehow, it was comforting to know that Do Ha could count on his mentor to always be there.  Jung Gyu’s quiet guidance, gentle teasing, and sincere concern is heartwarming to watch.  I would have enjoyed many more scenes between these two.

Things I Didn’t Like

Terrible Mothers

I could not stand either of these mothers.  Sol Hee’s mom was whiny and self-centered.  She never seemed to care about how Sol Hee felt about her gift, or the fact that her mom’s lies had put her in an impossible situation.  Meanwhile, Do Ha’s mom automatically assumes her own son is guilty, no matter how many times he swore he was innocent.  I was fine with Do Ha’s mom ending up in jail where she belonged, but I think Sol Hee’s mom got off way too easy.  She didn’t deserve either Sol Hee or her sweet, handsome husband.

Murder Story

The way this murder story was handled just wasn’t that good.  There were plenty of plot holes, and then in the last couple episodes, people just randomly start finding all the evidence they have missed for years. I did enjoy the plot twist with Deok Chan. I suspected that he did it from the beginning, but I mistakenly just assumed he was in love with Eum Ji,  The Do Ha crush was a total surprise.  But by and large, the mystery plot felt slapped together and sloppy.

Side Story Development

As I have mentioned, I felt like this drama had way too many secondary characters with unsatisfying stories and development.  There was a lot of potential there.  Whether they had focused on the music industry element, the neighborhood shop owners, the tarot card shop, or the parents, there was way too much material and far too little follow-through.  Personally, I would have loved to have seen Syaon and Chi Hoon get featured as more of a second lead couple.  And how about some present story for our handsome ex, Kang Min?

The Ending

“My Lovely Liar” gives us several happy endings.  But first we have the two jailbirds, Deuk Chan and Do Ha’s mom.  They have both apologized to Do Ha for what they did to him and he has forgiven them both.  In the neighborhood, Cho Rok and O Baek finally get back together.  And Boro goes on a reality dating show.  Chi Hoon leaves the Tarot Shop to become Syaon’s bodyguard, and love is in the air for the sweet couple.  Do Ha has a new artist to support in Ethan, and he is working with the brothers to put out more great hits.  While Sol Hee does lose her gift briefly, she gets it back.  But even still, she decides that she is no longer interested in living her life focuses on other people and their lies.  The couple get engaged and take a familiar bus trip back to where it all began.

Should I Watch

My Lovely Liar - Unspoiled Review

“My Lovely Liar” is a mystery rom-com.  For me, the love story for this drama was sweet and fun to watch.  But, despite a wealth of supporting characters, the drama fell short at providing interesting side plots or establishing a riveting murder mystery.  If you are just looking for a simple fantasy romance, this one isn’t a bad watch.  But if you are looking for strong story elements and exciting mystery, this is probably not it.     I give “My Lovely Liar” a 7 out of 10 ramen.
