Plot Summary

A Tale of Intrigue

The Crown Prince is kidnapped by mistake by a desperate father trying to save his daughter from a tragic fate. While the Royal Physician’s plan seems to go wrong from the very beginning, it throws the Prince into an adventure with the man’s beautiful daughter. And when the Prince returns to the palace, he will find that his future as a ruler is in jeopardy from enemies within his own family, and that his destiny with the woman is much more complicated than they could have imagined.

Personal Reflection

My Thoughts on Missing Crown Prince

Missing Crown Prince is a romantic historical drama that is a spin-off of the drama ‘Bossam: Steal the Fate”. It has a unique story and characters that I enjoyed, and the leads did a nice job. The focus on family relationships and the royal family themselves, rather than only using them as instruments of palace intrigue, gave it a more human emphasis that was interesting. Although I felt like the drama would have been better with fewer episodes and the chemistry between the leads was a bit flat. I give “Missing Crown Prince’ an 8 out of 10 ramen.

Meet the leads

Suho as Prince Lee Gon

Lee Gon is the Crown Prince who finds himself in the middle of a kidnapping scheme on an excursion away from the palace. When the beautiful physician’s daughter, Myung Yoo, helps him escape her father’s evil plan, the pair form a deep bond. But Lee Gon’s world will be turned upside down when he returns home to find his father on his death bed and his own future in jeopardy. And if the Censor’s Office Official Kim Dae Seung has anything to say about it, Lee Gon could lose not only his title but the woman he loves.

Lee Gon is a kind-hearted and even-tempered man who loves both his family and his people. As a ruler, he strives to be fair in all situations and to always protect those he loves. I found Suho’s performance as a patient and optimistic Prince to be unique and charming. It was an original take on the disposition of a Prince, and he fit the role well.

Hong Ye Ji as Choi Myung Yoo

A Clear Look at Missing Crown Prince 7/3/24

Choi Myung Yoo grew up at the knee of her father, the Royal Physician. As she got older, she began working at the local clinic. When she finds out that her father kidnapped a man to try to break Myung Yoo’s unfortunate fate, she steps in to help the man escape. But she soon finds out that the man is no other than the Crown Prince, her intended husband. And as she gets to know him, she also begins to hope for a destiny that includes a marriage to the Prince. But their lives are entangled not just by an ill-fated curse, but also by a secret that could destroy both of their families.

Choi Myung Yoo is strong and fiercely independent. She had no desire to become the Crown Princess until she met and fell in love with the Prince himself. Hong Ye Ji did a nice job in this role, although I didn’t feel much chemistry between her and Suho. But her sassy, carefree portrayal was enjoyable.

Supporting characters

Kim Min Kyu as Grand Prince Do Sung

Grand Prince Do Sung is Lee Gon’s younger half brother. He has never been interested in sitting on the throne, but his maternal grandfather uses the Prince to serve his own need for power. And when the Prince sees no other way to protect the ones he loves, he fights to make himself the next Crown Prince and possibly King.

Myung Se Bin as Queen Dowager Min Soo Ryun

The Queen Dowager was married to the previous King, Lee Gon’s grandfather. But she has been in love with Choi Sang Rok since they were engaged in their youth. And when Lee Gon finds out her secret, she decides that the only way for she and Sang Rok to escape punishment is by getting rid of Lee Gon and making Do Sung the next King.

Kim Joo Heon as Choi Sang Rok

Choi Sang Rok is the Royal Physician and father to Myung Yoo. He is in love with the Dowager and behind the plan to poison the King, so that Myung Yoo can marry the Crown Prince and become Queen. But their plan goes wrong when Lee Gon finds out he and the Dowager’s secret, and Myung Yoo finds the antidote to save the King.

Highlights of Missing Crown Prince

Three Things I Loved

1. Real Family:

I loved how this drama tried to show the Royal nuclear family as a supportive and loving unit. It’s so unusual to see this kind of relationship portrayed in historical royal dramas. And while the Queen Dowager brought plenty of drama and the Grand Prince does waver a bit, in the end they remain a close-knit family. Shout out to the Queen, who I thoroughly enjoyed!

2. Queen Dowager:

I found the Queen Dowager’s story to be both original and heartbreaking. While I never liked her character or the things she did, her story was beautifully told and bittersweet until the very end.

3. Different Choices:

It was interesting the way they continued to compare Lee Gon and Myung Yoo with the Dowager and Choi Sang Rok. And while their ill-fates seemed very similar, the choices they made really defined who each couple was. In the end, Lee Gon and Myung Yoo chose their own happiness, far from Royal politics rather than any need for power or prestige.

Three Things I Didn't Love

1. Mislabeled:

First of all, this drama is classified as a romantic comedy. It seemed like a lot of fans who tuned in to see Suho in a cute Prince role were disappointed with the heavy and slow moving political plot. Secondly, the title is also misleading, since the Prince is only “missing” for the first few episodes. These two points may be responsible for fan’s luke-warm opinions of the drama itself.

2. The Loophole:

I felt like the writers missed a chance to really stick the landing on this one by pointing out the the “curse” was broken because Myung Yoo was no longer marrying “the Crown Prince”. While many fans probably made their own leap in logic, it seems like they could have brought this point home with more emphasis, since it is the whole reason we get a happy ending.

3. Spin-off?:

Another “labeling” issue I had, was calling this drama a spin-off of “Bossam: Steal the Fate”. While the writers are the same, and they both reference the idea of bossam kidnapping, the similarities end there. The plots and characters seem completely unrelated. Again, this isn’t a problem with the drama itself, but it certainly may have given fans inaccurate expectations.

The Conclusion of 'Missing Crown Prince'

Drama Ending Explained

‘Missing Crown Prince’ has gives our leads a happy ending, living free from palace politics. But first, the King finally wakes up from his coma. Do Sung’s grandfather is arrested and beheaded for acts of treason. And Choi Sang Rok is killed trying to escape the palace with the Dowager. Later we see the Dowager die after giving birth to a daughter. And we see Do Sung find a letter from his brother saying that the throne is his.

It seems that the writers finally remembered in the final few minutes that they had billed this a comedy. The ending scenes show Lee Gon and Myung Yoo living together and running a clinic. They are raising not only their own child, but also Myung Yoo’s young sister. The now-healthy King and Queen come for a visit, eager to see their grandchildren. But when Do Sung shows up to yell at his brother for something he has done, everyone scatters, laughing and enjoying the joke.
