General Information About 'Bad Prosecutor'

Air Date: October 5 – November 24, 2022

# of Episodes: 12

Where to Watch: Viki

Genre: Crime Action Drama

Starring: Doh Kyung Soo (D.O) and Lee Se Hee

Plot Overview

'Bad Prosecutor: A Fight for Justice and Revenge

A prosecutor with a reputation for being a reckless troublemaker sets his sites on a powerful, but corrupt, enemy who is hiding behind some very influential people.  And as he begins to uncover the pieces of the puzzle, he will find that this case has a more personal connection than he ever expected.  As he investigates the identity of the mysterious villain who pulls the strings from behind the scenes, he will bring along a team of helpers who include a mediocre hacker, the daughter of an infamous crime boss, and a by-the-book colleague.  But can a team of idealistic rebels take down an ivory tower built of years of co-dependence and bribery?

The Leads - Doh Kyung Soo as Jin Jung and Lee Se Hee as Shin Ah Ra

Meeting the lead characters: Jin Jung

Lead Male Character: Doh Kyung Soo as Jin Jung

Jin Jung is a prosecutor who believes that the sword of justice is more than just a figure of speech.  He carries a wooden sword with him as a reminder of his job to defend the law and those it serves.  But when he challenges a well-connected group of politicians and rich businessmen over the death of a mysterious young woman,  he finds himself demoted to the Civil Affairs Division where he spends his time chasing after lost dogs and other “trivial’ tasks.

He is told to stop all investigations of the murder case he was working on.  But Jung is not easily discouraged and when he gets a lead in the case he, along with his own team of crusaders,  continues to dig into the case.  And when he gets closer to uncovering the truth, he will find that there is a connection between the current murder and the “accidental” death of his journalist father years before.

Jin Jung is brash and impulsive.  He isn’t afraid to take chances if he thinks it will help put a criminal behind bars.  He also isn’t shy about bending the rules if it seems like the only way to catch the bad guys.  But his quest for justice stems from his adoration of his dad, who used his own sword, in the form of a pen, to call out injustice and stand up for the truth.  This was such a fun role for Doh Kyung Soo because you could just tell he was having fun doing it.  It may not have been his most challenging character, but I enjoyed watching this lighter, carefree side of him.

Charming Bad Prosecutor 2022

Meeting the lead characters: shin ah ra

Lead Female Character: Lee Se Hee as Shin Ah Ra

Shin Ah Ra is Jin Jung’s  senior at work.  She is known for her sharp work skills and her ability to always go by the book.  But when Jung shares the information he has been able to gather, she is swayed into helping him investigate further.  She quickly finds herself as just one of the team, although not everyone in the team is so happy to have her working with them.  And the more she works with Jung and his friends, the more she finds herself relaxing and enjoying her job.  And while she doesn’t alway appreciate his methods, she is impressed by Jung’s ability to get results in completely unexpected ways.

Shin Ah Ra has known Jin Jung for awhile, and she is obviously not oblivious to his charming personality and endearing enthusiasm.  Even when she finds herself in danger because of one of his outlandish plans, she can’t seem to help but go along with it.  Lee Se Hee was fun to watch in this role.  I loved seeing her gradually let her guard down more and more as the drama went on.  But I wish we could have learned more about who she is as a character, not just as a response to Jin Jung.

Supporting characters

Ha Joon as Oh Do Hwan

Oh Do Hwan is also a senior prosecutor.  He has risen through the ranks and promoted his career by supporting the most powerful and well-connected higher-ups.  But when the man who had promised to give him a successful future suddenly ends up dead, he is forced to set his sites on a new mentor.

Charming Bad Prosecutor 2022

Kim Sang Ho as Park Jae Kyung

Park Jae Kyung is the head of the Civil Affairs Division.  Like Jin Jung, he stepped on the wrong toes early in his career.  But although it may seem like he has given up on life, he is patiently waiting for the perfect moment to get his revenge on those who double-crossed him.

Charming Bad Prosecutor 2022

Kim Chang Wan as Seo Hyun Kyu

Seo Hyun Kyu is the CEO of Kangsan Law Firm.  He has spend his career building a “library” of dirty secrets and scandals against his peers and competitors.  Now he is pretty much unstoppable as he bribes anyone who gets in his way.  But Jung intends to bring him to justice for all his crimes, no matter the cost.

Highlights of Bad Prosecutor

Three Things I Loved

1. Joong Do and Eun Ji:

I enjoyed having Joong Do and Eun Ji as Jung’s helpers.  Their different personalities and skills made them both distinct and interesting to the story.  I laughed through all the parts where poor Joong Do keeps getting hurt and forgotten.  And the dagger looks Eun Ji threw at Ah Ra were also silly but nice comic relief.

2. Merging Backstories:

I have a real weakness for Kim Sang Ho as an actor.  He is just such an unlikely looking star.  And I loved his interactions with the whole team, but especially Jung and Coco, or should I say Snowball!  I thought it was clever the way they showed both Jung and Jae Kyung’s backstories and slowly merged them into a common moment.  Sure, it wasn’t completely unexpected, but the story is still told well.

3. Fun:

This is one of those dramas that is just fun.  It doesn’t try to be overly mysterious or clever, but the journey is entertaining.  A lot of that is thanks to Do Kyung Soo and his obvious enthusiasm, but kudos to the whole cast for playing along and keeping things interesting throughout the drama.

Areas for Improvement

1. Change of Heart:

I kind of expected Oh Do Hwan to turn into a good guy at some point, and I was glad he did.  But I didn’t really feel like they gave much development as far as what changed his mind.  To go from someone who did all kinds of dirty work to get to where he is to suddenly helping the office outcast is not a small jump.  I would have liked to see some moments where his conscience was pricked a bit first before just having his whole career motivation change.

2. Shin Ah Ra:

Shin Ah Ra has the makings of a good character, but for a lead, she got surprisingly little backstory or character development.  It’s like her only purpose was to be a foil for Jung’s bad-boy ways.  It would have been nice to see her get a bit of storyline for herself.

3. Villain’s Power:

For a character that has every powerful public official under his thumb, Hyun Kyu seemed to be strangely restrained when it came to dealing with Jung.  It just felt like he wasn’t even trying.  He didn’t even have to kill him.  He could have just had him removed from his position as prosecutor.  It would have been easy enough to do, and probably taken care of the threat.  It seemed unrealistic for him to deal with everyone else so harshly but continue to let Jung cause trouble.

The Conclusion of 'bad prosecutor'

Drama Ending Explained

‘Bad Prosecutor’ ends with justice for the good guys.  We finally get to see Jung in his prosecutor’s robe, which is strange for a show that is supposed to be about a prosecutor, but I digress… He asks the court for the strictest punishment for Hyun Kyu.  And the surprise witness turns out to be a very much alive Jae Kyung!  YAY!!  And with his testimony, Hyun Kyu is easily proven guilty and recieves the death penalty.  And he doesn’t go down alone.  It looks like all those who exchanged favors with him are also arrested.  Oh Do Hwan also steps up to help Jung get the bad guys arrested.

And with that, Jung is reinstated and Ah Ra is promoted to Senior Prosecutor, where she is in charge of trying to keep Jung in line.  One month after the trial, we see Jung and his “team”, now with much more investigative freedom, as they hunt down a criminal.  And although Ah Ra calls and yells at Jung to come back, he is too busy doing what he does best!

‘Bad Prosecutor’ is a fun, high-adrenaline crime action drama. They let Doh Kyung Soo (D.O from the K-Pop group EXO) do his own stunts, and the fact that he is having the time of his life doing it is absolutely obvious. The drama takes a while to set up, but the fight scenes keep things entertaining through some of the slower sections.  I enjoyed the chaotic antics of the lead and the interactions between him and the other characters had a casual chemistry that worked well.

The drama wisely avoided all but the most subtle of romantic sparks between the leads, which kept the story focus on the main investigation plot.  But if you are familiar with this style of political corruption drama, you won’t find much new or unexpected in this story.  The character development is weak and the story is often implausible, but it’s a fun watch that doesn’t require much deep thought.  And D.O’s charm is definitely infectious.   I give ‘Bad Prosecutor’ an 8 out of 10 ramen.

Personal Insights

My Review and Rating

‘Matrimonial Chaos’ is a refreshing romantic drama about the complexities of modern relationships.  This drama is not the casual rom-com it may appear at first glance.   It is a realistic portrayal of complicated characters and the struggles of marriage. It does a nice job of combining quirky humor with indepth conversations that tackled emotional issues and thoughts.  The characters are well-developed, and the dialogue is extremely well-written.

But for some, this focus on conversations may not hold your interest.  The story is very slow moving and prefers talking about situations rather than actually showing them.  At times, the action itself is almost non-existent.  But this cast is excellent, so if you enjoy slow-paced, realistic, character driven stories, this one is definitely worth a watch.  I give ‘Matrimonial Chaos’ an 8 out 10 ramen.

Plot Summary

Matrimonial Chaos: A Story of Love and Conflict

After 3 years of marriage, a couple find themselves on the verge of divorce.  Their extremely opposite personalities have made their relationship increasingly difficult to bear, and they just aren’t sure it is worth it anymore.  As they wrestle with this new stage in their relationship, the husband meets his first love and her “husband’.  And the two couples develop an unusual and unlikely friendship that gives them each a sounding board, as they spend their time together talking about love, family, and marriage.  Each one will face important choices about their wants and needs, and what they hope for their own futures.

Meet the Leads

A Clear Exploration of 'Matrimonial Chaos' 8/14/24

Jo Seok Moo's Story

Jo Seok Moo never thought he would get married, but his relationship with Bok Gwi Ju changed all that.  Now, 3 years down the road, their clashing personality have caused him to regret his decision.  And when Gwi Ju agrees to the divorce, Seok Moo is relieved.  But the legal process of getting divorced is much easier than actually breaking it to their families that they have ended their marriage.  So, they agree to live together, as roommates, until they can find the right time to tell their families the truth.

But as they explore life beyond marriage, Seok Moo runs into his first love and her husband, who live nearby.  And since the couple are also going through a rough patch in their relationship, the four of them form a surprising friendship.  And seeing the other couple gives them a fresh perspective on their relationship.

Jo Seok Moo's Character Analysis

Jo Seok Moo is prickly, stubborn, and difficult to get along with.  He had once dreamed of becoming a singer, but after audiences seemed unmoved by his performances, he gave it up and took a job he hates working for a security company.  This disappointment, plus a strained relationship growing up with his father, has left him cool and emotionally detached.  Instead he prefers to spend his time alone without people around to disturb his peace.

Cha Tae Hyun played this role with just enough humor to keep his character from feeling totally selfish and cruel.  I thought he was well-suited to the role and gave Seok Moo a nice depth.

A Clear Exploration of 'Matrimonial Chaos' 8/14/24

Kang Hwi Ru's Story

Kang Hwi Ru was traumatized after her apartment was burglarized.  But the kind security agent who answered her emergency call seemed understanding and patient.  And the pair develop a close relationship that soon turns to marriage.  But the pressure to meet Seok Moo’s often unrealistic expectations of her takes its toll on her life.  So, in a moment of anger, Hwi Ru agrees to divorce him, even though she still loves him and would rather stay together.

Her father’s upcoming surgery makes it impossible to tell her family the disappointing news of her divorce.  So she continues to live in their house, as she comes to terms with what she wants to do with her life now.  Her close relationship with Seok Moo’s grandmother also makes her situation complicated.  But Hwi Ru is determined to make the most of her life, whether she has to do that alone or as a couple.

Kang Hwi Ru's Character Analysis

Kang Hwi Ru has always wanted to write and illustrate her own children’s book.  But she has never told Seok Moo that all the “doodles” she leaves around the house are actually her life’s dream.  She is free-spirited and easy-going, and although she may seem lazy or sloppy, she has a keen understanding of the people around her and an accepting nature that helps her love Seok Moo, even when he is acting unreasonable.

Bae Doo Na is a quirky and interesting actress. I love to watch the way she develops her characters and the unique qualities she seems to bring out in them.  I loved her as Hwi Ru and I sympathized with her character and her journey to rediscover the hopes she once had for her own future.

Secondary Characters

Lee El as Jin Yoo Yeong

A Clear Exploration of 'Matrimonial Chaos' 8/14/24

Jin Yoo Yeong was Seok Moo’s first love.  She is married to Jang Hyun, who has continued to have affairs with other women during their whole relationship.  But rather than address his behavior, she has chosen to ignore it and pretend that everything is fine between them.  But when everything is suddenly brought out in the open, she is forced to deal with her feelings about him and their marriage.

Son Suk Ku as Lee Jang Hyun

A Clear Explanation of 'Matrimonial Chaos' 8/14/24

Lee Jang Hyun is Yoo Yeong’s husband.  Except that he is the only who knows they aren’t actually married, since he lied about taking their paperwork to the courthouse.  Although he cares about Yoo Yeong, Jang Hyun is scared to actually be happy. But through his friendship with Seok Moo, he begins to learn how much he loves Yoo Yeong and wants to finally settle down.

Wi Ha Joon as Kim Shi Ho

A Clear Explanation of 'Matrimonial Chaos' 8/14/24

Kim Shi Ho is a young musician who meets Hwi Ru at a party.  He is interested in her, even though she is much older than him.  But although the two develop a friendship, Hwi Ru never returns his romantic feelings.  Shi Ho also has an unexpected history with Seok Moo that makes things even more complicated..

Highlights of Matrimonial Chaos

3 Things I Loved About 'Matrimonial Chaos'

1. Grandmother:

Moon Sook is wonderful as Seok Moo’s wise and adventurous grandmother.  Her ability to accept and support Hwi Ru, even in the face of her divorce, makes her such a unique and likable character.  Every grandma should have their own curling club!

2. Realistic Portrayal of Relationships:

The writers do an excellent job of depicting the complexities of relationships. It doesn’t shy away from showing the ups and downs, making it feel very authentic. The interactions between the lead couple are particularly compelling, showcasing both their love and their conflicts.  I love the honest portrayal and the well written dialogues in this drama.

3. Strong Supporting Cast:

It feels like a disservice to even refer to Yoo Young and Jang Hyun as secondary characters.  They contribute significantly to the main plot and honestly the drama would not have been the same without them. Their characters and their friendships with Seok Moo and Hwi Ru add layers to the narrative and the dialogues making the drama richer and more enjoyable.

critiques of Matrimonial Chaos

Areas for Improvement in 'Matrimonial Chaos'

1. Shi Ho:

So, in all honesty, I came back to this drama because I was looking for something with Wi Ha Joon.  So it’s no surprise that I was disappointed by his lack of real storyline in this one.  Also, they did quite a bit to set up his backstory with Seok Moo.  Although I never expected him to get together with Hwi Ru, I did kind of hope that he and Seok Moo might become friends again.  That would have made his story seem more worthwhile

2. Grandma/Dad Story:

As I said above, I loved the grandmother’s story.  But I didn’t find her relationship with Seok Moo’s father to be very interesting.  I’m just not sure we needed to go into it.  There were plenty of other examples of his father’s character and relationships without tackling the whole step-mom angle.

3. Publisher:

I really enjoyed Ki Wan as the mysterious, introspective publisher.  His character was interesting and full of unique qualities.  I was disappointed that once Hwi Ru put the brakes on any potential relationship, he just disappeared.  He was, after all, still her publisher.  I would like to have seen proof that he was still cheering for her from the sidelines.

The Conclusion of 'The Atypical Family'

Drama Ending Explained

Although ‘Matrimonial Chaos’ leaves the story of Seok Moo and Hwi Ru open-ended, everyone does get a happy ending of sorts.  Now that Hwi Ru knows about Seok Moo’s past career dreams, she begins to understand some of his personality quirks better.  And when Hwi Ru publishes a book based on their love story, Seok Moo finally gets a glimpse into Hwi Ru’s perspective and feelings.  This allows them to begin building a bridge in their relationship.

When Yoo Yeong finds out that she is pregnant, she is unsure if she is ready to trust Jang Hyun again.  But when he starts to open up to her about his past and how that has made him scared to give his heart to anyone, she starts to wonder if they can start fresh.  When Jang Hyun hears about the baby, he begs Yoo Yeong to finally marry him for real and she eventually agrees.

One year later, we see Yoo Yeong and Jang Hyun married and taking care of their son.  Now that their marriage has found some stability, Jang Hyun seems content and grateful for the chance to be a husband and father, while Yoo Yeong seems brighter and less emotionally detached.  As for Seok Moo and Hwi Ru, they have also found some stability, but for them that does not include marriage.  It does still consist of plenty of nagging and bickering, but there is also some grace and understanding that make it all worthwhile.

Personal Insights

Final Impressions and Rating

Rating: 8/10

‘Matrimonial Chaos’ is a refreshing romantic drama about the complexities of modern relationships.  This drama is not the casual rom-com it may appear at first glance.   It is a realistic portrayal of complicated characters and the struggles of marriage. It does a nice job of combining quirky humor with in-depth conversations that tackle emotional issues and thoughts.
