My Personal Thoughts and Ratings

‘Buried Hearts’ is a revenge melodrama with familiar tropes like birth secrets and family jealousies. It is emotional and exciting. The characters are extreme and the all-star cast is sold out for the story. Park Hyung Sik gives one of his best performances to date. Unlike many popular revenge dramas that seem to glorify the experience, this drama does a nice job of also presenting the pain and disillusionment of finally getting that thing that you always thought you wanted.

These characters are almost all entirely unlikable, with a few refreshing exceptions. Their wealth and power often make them seem unrealistic and overblown, and that made it hard for me to sympathize with them, even when the events are somewhat tragic. The personalities are inconsistent and the lead male is the only character who seems to have a believable story development and arc. The romance is “buried” under a deep layer of makjang that is not everyone’s cup of tea. But I enjoyed the ride and seeing Park Hyung Sik shine in this totally new kind of role was worth the watch. I give ‘Buried Hearts’ an 8 out of 10.
