The Story

After bullying gets out of control at a high school, one model student decides to step forward and protect those who have been hurt. And despite his small  appearance, his quick mind, courage, and coolness in the moment give him the ability to begin making a difference. But bullies seldom give up easy or play fair, and the road to peace and freedom will be long and hard-fought.

'Weak Hero' is an exciting series about fighting back against the bullies.

Meeting the stars: Park Ji Hoon and Choi Hyun Wook

Park Ji Hoon as Yeon Si Eun

Yeon Si Eun is a model student who gets top grades and does his best to distance himself from his classmates and their drama. But when he sees students being bullied and abused, he can’t help but step in. Through his brave actions, he discovers what it’s like to have real friends and to experience what it’s like to be a part of something bigger than himself. Unfortunately, although they eventually manage to put the bullies in their place, it almost costs the life of his best friend, Su Ho. And Si Eun finds himself alone again at a new school in the beginning of class 2.

In his new school, with his past experiences fresh in his mind and Su Ho still in a coma, Si Eun tries even harder to keep his distance from his classmates. But a new friend, Hu Min, who reminds Si Eun so much of Su Ho, pulls Si Eun back out of his shell and into the middle of yet another power struggle with a new group of rich and brutal bullies.  And this time, Si Eun refuses to lose another friend

Yeon Si Eun is withdrawn and quiet. His relationship with his parents has always felt strained and he has never been good at making friends. But when he meets classmates like Su Ho and Hu Min, who are willing to put the time into getting to know him, he begins to find healing and acceptance. Park Ji Hoon is an incredible young actor.  I felt like he did a wonderful job of playing this broken and vulnerable young student.

Choi Hyun Wook as An Su Ho

An Su Ho is a hard working student who has been raised by his grandmother. He works every night to help support them, and often sleeps at school for the few hours he gets. He is a good fighter who has never been interested in participating in the ranking system used by the bullies. But he will step in if it interferes with his sleep.

He decides that he wants to be friends with Si Eun, and he doesn’t give Si Eun much of chance to refuse. Together they take on the bad guys and win. But Su Ho finds himself in the boxing ring  with the toughest of them, and ends up in a coma from his injuries. Unfortunately, he spends pretty much all of Class 2 in a hospital bed, but his presence is felt throughout the whole series. And when he finally wakes up at the end, he and Si Eun share an emotional reunion.

Su Ho is cheerful and lighthearted, despite his difficult life. His willingness to take both Si Eun and Beom Seuk under his wing and offer his friendship and protection show his true character. Choi Hyun Wook has grown so much as an actor and he was perfect in this role. His bright personality was the perfect contrast from Si Eun’s somber and withdrawn character. I loved their interactions and the way their relationship grows through the drama.

Supporting characters

Ryeo Un as Park Hu Min

Park Hu Min is the leader of Eunjang High School. He grew up with a violent father and he absolutely forbids any kind of fighting at school. At one time, he was friends with Baek Jin, and taught him how to fight so he could defend himself. Now Baek Jin is trying to win back Hu Min’s friendship, but Hu Min can’t stand the person Baek Jin has become. Hu Min befriends Si Eun, and they work together to take down Baek Jin and his boss.

Hong Kyung as O Beom Seok

O Beom Seok is the classmate Si Eun ends up defending in Class 1. Beom Seok becomes friends with Si Euna and Su Ho, but his jealousy of their friendship and his need for popularity and power make him turn against his friends, and it is Beom Seok who lures Su Ho to the boxing ring where he almost dies.

Bae Na Ra as Na Baek Jin

Na Baek Jin is the perfect student, but behind the scenes, he leads “the Union”, which steals and extorts money from students through an online gambling site. He used to be best friends with Hu Min, and he can’t stand the fact that Hu Min won’t allow anyone from Eunjang to join his group.

3 things i loved about ‘Weak Hero’

1.

Si Eun’s Journey:

Park Ji Hoon is so good in this drama. His expressive eyes spoke so much between every line. And I loved the way this drama dove deep into his journey through the darkness and guilt of Su Ho’s accident. Even his slow speech patterns during class 2 are meant to reflect his emotional trauma and his road to healing.

2.

Jun Tae:

Jun Tae is such an adorable character. It was funny how even the villains couldn’t seem to help babying him. And that made his acts of bravery that much more satisfying whenever he jumped in to save the day in his own ways.

3.

Strong Male Relationships:

This drama did a great job of showing strong and complex male relationships. Some fans were eager to turn it into a BL drama, but I think it is so much more beautiful as sincere friendship and affection. Was there chemistry? Absolutely. But it’s not meant to be interpreted as a romantic love story.

3 things i didn’t love about ‘WEak Hero’

1.

Baek Jin’s Story:

Class 2 really was as much a tale of Baek Jin and Hu Min as it was about Si Eun. And because of that, I really wish we could have seen more into Baek Jin’s character and backstory. There were hints to several facts about his past and upbringing, but we never get a great idea of who he is or how he became the villain he is. I mean, there was something sympathetic about him, and I couldn’t help feeling sad at his death in the end. And that made me wish I knew more.

2.

Class 2 Too Polished:

Part of the charm of Class 1 was the rough edge and brutality of the scenes and characters. Unfortunately, I felt like Class 2 lost some of that charm and became a bit too polished and sensationalized.

3.

No Female Characters:

I really liked the subtle little flirtation between Si Eun and Yeong I in Class 1. So I was disappointed at the absolute lack of female characters in Class 2. It would have been nice to at least have a few female classmates to create a bit of tension in the story.

The Conclusion of 'WeaK HERO'

The Ending

‘Weak Hero’ finishes with a happy ending for our heroes. But first, there is an all out brawl between Eunjang and the Union. And it all comes down to the final stand between Baek Jin and Hu Min. But when Hu Min had given everything and can’t stand anymore, Si Eun steps in to do his part. And after a rest, it has to be Hu Min who comes back to finish Baek Jin off. And with that the Union runs away and disbands and Baek Jin disappears.

And with peace restored, Eunjang goes back to the comfortable place it has always been. The friendships of our main crew continue to grow. And just when everything seems to be just about perfect, we get the best news ever. Su Ho has finally woken up. And Si Eun takes all his new friends to meet him.

The after-credit scenes show Seong Jae being offered Baek Jin’s position, since no one seems to know where Baek Jin is. But even Seong Jae isn’t interested in being the captain of their sinking ship. And lastly, we see Hu Min and the others at a funeral service for Baek Jin. And as Hu Min stands with tears streaming down his face, you can feel his regret and grief.

I have seen some speculations about a Class 3, but the consensus seems to be that since a) the plot lines were all tied up nicely and b) the drama has covered everything up until the end of the webtoon, it seems unlikely. For now, we have set this band of heroes free to enjoy the rest of their high school life together.

My Personal Thoughts and Ratings

‘Weak Hero’ is an exciting and intense action drama about high school bullying. The drama focuses on friendship and the healing of past traumas. The young cast is talented and the raw emotions of the characters are well developed. The fight scenes are exciting and well incorporated into the over-all plot.

I definitely enjoyed the first season more than the second. And it was a bit disappointing that the second season brings in a whole new cast, with the exception of the lead character. I think, partly because of this, the drama loses some of its charm and depth in the second season. The fight scenes are both brutal and sensationalized, so you should be prepared for plenty of violence. But I enjoyed the story development and the bittersweet relationships.  I give ‘Weak Hero’ an 8 out of 10.
