But while serving her time, she meets a mysterious stranger with a strange offer. The stranger will confess to killing the woman’s husband, if the woman does a favor for her in return. And as more details of the case come to light, they will find both unexpected allies and enemies.
Meeting the stars: Jeon Do Yeon and Kim Go Eun
Jeon Do Yeon as An Yun Su
An Yun Su is a happily married art teacher with a young daughter. But her world collapses when she finds her husband, Lee Gi Dae, murdered in his art studio. And the prosecutor, Baek Dong Hun, is sure she is the killer. Although Yun Su tries to prove her innocence she is found guilty and sent to prison
But in prison she meets a woman named Mo Eun who comes to her with an offer. Mo Eun will confess to Gi Dae’s murder, if Yun Su will kill someone for Mo Eun when she is released. Yun Su agrees to the deal and the pair plan out their strategy for proving that Mo Eun is Gi Dae’s murderer.
Yun Su is released, but with Mo Eun’s trial around the corner, Yun Su will have to find a way to carry out her end of the bargain without getting caught. And there is still the question of who actually killed Gi Dae. When a mysterious third party steps in to kill Yun Su’s target, the pieces start to lead her back to the original murderer.
An Yun Su is a devoted wife and mother. But the shock of finding Gi Dae dead and believing he may have been killed by a mistress, lead her to act in a suspicious way. Ultimately, it is this reaction that makes Dong Hun sure she is the one who did it. Jeon Do Yeon is a great, melodramatic actrss and this part really fits perfectly in her wheelhouse.
Kim Go Eun as Mo Eun
Mo Eun’s sister commits suicide after she is cyber-bullied by a cruel classmate named Ko Se Hun. Mo Eun is out of the country, working at a hospital in Thailand at the time. But she immediately returns home, vowing revenge. Her first step is to kill the parents of the boy responsible. She murders the man and wife after breaking into their home. The police find her still loitering in the house, although the couple are long dead. She is arrested and truthfully confesses to the crime. But while the parents are dead, Mo Eun hasn’t fully carried out her vendetta until she knows Se Hun is also dead.
So Mo Eun devises a plan. She is already going to prison for her crimes, so she volunteers to confess to the killing of Yun Su’s husband as well. But her offer comes with a price, Yun Su, who hasn’t killed anyone until this point, has to find and kill Se Hun. But the plan goes awry when Yun Su tries to deceive her and someone else steps in to kill Se Hun instead. And it turns out that Gi Dae’s true killer is closer than anyone imagined.
Mo Eun’s whole world collapses after she finds out what happened to her sister. By the beginning of this drama, she has become a cold blooded killer with no hesitation or remorse. And the medical knowledge to be able to do it. But she was once a devoted doctor and sister, who used her talents to treat those in need. Kim Go Eun is a versatile actress with a love for challenging, unconventional parts. She was chilling and relentless in this role and she nailed it. For me, she was easily the highlight of this drama.
Supporting characters
Park Hae Soo as Baek Dong Hun
Baek Dong Hun is the prosecutor in charge of Lee Gi Dae’s murder. From the very beginning, he is sure that Yun Su is the killer, and his relentless need to prove it was what put Yun Su in prison. And when Mo Eun confesses, Dong Hun is determined to find out the truth.
Jin Seon Kyu as Jang Jeong Gu
Jang Jeong Gu is the boxer turned attorney who steps forward to handle Yun Su’s case. Although Yun Su doesn’t trust her lawyer at first, Jeong Gu works tirelessly to gain her trust and prove her innocence.
Choi Young Joon as Jin Yeong In
Jin Yeong In is Mo Eun’s public defender, and in a surprising plot twist, also one of the villains in this drama. It turns out that Yeong In took Mo Eun’s case to help cover up the fact that his wife, Su Yeon, is the real killer of Gi Dae.
3 things i loved about ‘The Price of Confession’
1.
Kim Mun Jun:
As heartbreaking as it was to watch Yun Su lose the support of her best friend, this aspect of the drama was handled really well. Mun Jun is torn between loyalty to her long-time friend and the social pressures her continued association with Yun Su will have on her family. This struggle felt realistic and consistent with the characters, and it made the reconciliation all the more sweet.
2.
Evolving Scenes:
This drama had an interesting way of showing a scene as it is described or remembered by one character, and then modifying it as other memories come into play. Key scenes constantly evolve and shift to include new information and new perspectives, so that memory flashbacks never feel redundant or a waste of screen time.
3.
Mo Eun’s Backstory:
When we first meet Mo Eun, she is a cold and heartless killer who doesn’t garner much sympathy. But I like how this drama slowly unpacks her history and helps us gain insight into how Mo Eun became the person she is now. By the end, I felt like we understood who Mo Eun was as a character and the toll her sister’s death took on her as a person.
3 things i didn’t love about ‘The Price of Confession’
1.
Real Motive:
I must admit I was a bit disappointed to find out that Gi Dae’s murder was not at all a crime of passion and was instead based on boring old greed and self preservation. The whole art appraisal story with Yeong In and his wife kind of came out of left field for me and wasn’t nearly as interesting as the reveal I was hoping for.
2.
Unexplained Characters:
This drama presented a lot of complex characters that just don’t get enough explanation. Even Yun Su suffers from this a bit, as I never felt like I understood her suspicious actions in the beginning or who she was and how she had changed by the end. Add to this list Dong Hun’s insistance on Yun Su’s guilt, the prison doctor’s random tendencies to get involved, and Ko Se Hun’s grandfather’s strange political ideas and strained family relationships.
3.
Lee Sop:
Yun’s daughter Lee Sop is a strange character in this drama. The child’s lack of response at the death of her father felt purposefully enegmatic. The few scenes we see of them as a family, Sop seems to have an ideal happy family life. But her emotional distance through the rest of the drama feels strangely out of place.
The Conclusion of 'The Price of Confession'
The Ending
‘The Price of Confession’ wraps everything up quite well for a thriller. The bittersweet ending makes sense for where each of the characters have ended up. Mo Eun escapes and goes with Yun Su to get the fingerprint from Gi Dae’s studio. But Yeong In has also gone there to destroy the evidence. There is a fight and in the end, Mo Eun sacrifices herself and kills Jeong In in the process, as the lawyers arrive to find Mo Eun and Jeong In both dead.
With the fingerprint saved, Yun Su is finally cleared of all murder charges. She is still guilty of conspiring to kill Ko Se Hun. But in light of time served and all she has been through, she gets a light sentence. The final scene shows Yun Su after a time jump. She has finished serving her time and taken Sop to live in Thailand. They go to pay their respects to Mo Eun’s memory by going to the telephone platform on the mountainside and hanging Mo Eun’s watch there.
My Personal Thoughts and Ratings
‘The Price of Confession’ is a gripping crime thriller with deep emotions and a strong, tight story. The cast of characters is complex and engaging and the leads both give chilling performances. Once again, Kim Go Eun shines and Jeon Do Yeon is right there with her. The 12 episode format gives us plenty of time to get to explore the leads, without drawing the story out too long.
But this is a psychological thriller about a sensless and violent murder. The story is not only creepy at times, but also violent. It is intense from start to finish, with no breathers for things like romance or humor. And the complicated secondary characters don’t get nearly enough character development to explain their actions. But if you love a good psychological thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat from start to finish, I thought this one was very solid. I give ‘The Price of Confession’ a 9 out of 10 ramen.
