The Story
A man’s life is turned upside down when he is wrongfully accused of committing murder. And despite his innocence, all the evidence points directly at him. As he serves his time in prison, he begins investigating his case and other similar cases. Slowly he uncovers a web of corruption involving some of the most powerful men in the country and vows to get revenge against those who are responsible.
Meeting the stars: Ji Chang Wook and Doh Kyung Soo
Ji Chang Wook as Park Tae Jung
Park Tae Jung works part-time jobs to help put his brother through school and is in the process of opening his own garden cafe. But his life is thrown into chaos when he is arrested for a crime he didn’t commit and thrown into prison. His life in prison is overwhelming and miserable until he meets Noh Yong Sik, an older prisoner who works closely with the prison chaplain. Slowly Tae Jung learns to fight against the abuse and violence of prison life and devotes his time to investigating his case.
Through his research and a chance encounter with another prisoner whose story is remarkably similar to his own, Tae Jung uncovers an elaborate system of crime and cover-up run by An Yo Han. He vows to expose the truth and see justice for himself and the countless other innocent victims. And he finds valueable allies in Yong Sik and his daughter Eun Bi.
Park Tae Jung is kind, generous, and hard-working. But when he goes to prison, he loses everything. His girlfriend refuses to wait for him, his brother dies of an apparent suicide, and his close friends all feel like distant strangers. As he plots revenge against the inhumane villains who put him there, his morality will be cruely tested. I absolutely love Ji Chang Wook, and I’m happy to see him taking so many intense, action roles. He is a versatile actor who is great in most any genre, but I love to see him in these grittier style dramas.
Doh Kyung Soo as An Yo Han
An Yo Han is the CEO of an elite security service for the rich and powerful. Yo Han specializes in framing innocent people for the crimes committed by his clients. When one of his clients, Baek Do Gyeong, kills a woman in a drugged-out haze, Yo Han frames Tae Jung for the murder. Yo Han’s money, connections, and technological knowledge make it easy to create indisputable evidence against Tae Jung, allowing Do Gyeong to escape totally undetected.
But when Tae Jung begins to put the pieces together, Yo Han’s corrupt empire becomes threatened for the first time. Tae Jung, with the help of Yong Sik, Eun Bi, and even his old friends, proves to be a much more formidable enemy than Yo Han ever gives him credit for. And as Yo Han’s success is threatened, he becomes desperate to destroy Tae Jung and anyone else who gets in his way.
An Yo Han is cold and emotionless. He is an artist who sees his crime scenes as stages to be set. And he uses souvenir body parts to create gruesome art pieces that he sells to launder his fees. He shows no remorse or humanity in any of his action. While I would have liked to see a bit more nuance to Yo Han’s complete evil, I have to say that Doh Kyung Soo played this character to perfection. The intensity he brings to this villain role is terrifyingly believable.
Supporting characters
Kim Jong Soo as No Yong Sik
Tae Jung meets No Yong Sik in prison. He has been a long-term prisoner and he is able to mentor Tae Jung. When he is finally released, he goes back to his old life and his daughter. But he stays in touch with Tae Jung, and when Tae Jung escapes, Yong Sik is there to help him put his revenge plans into action.
Jo Yoon Soo as No Eun Bi
No Eun Bi is Yong Sik’s daughter. She is resentful of Yong Sik for leaving her alone while he was in prison. Eun Bi seems rude and harsh, but it is all just a cover-up for her own scars. She is immediately attracted to Tae Jung, although she refuses to admit it at first. But as she works with her father to help Tae Jung, the trio develop a strong bond,
Lee Kwang Soo as Baek Do Gyeong
Baek Do Gyeong is one of Yo Han’s elite clients. He is the son of a prominent lawmaker, and the true murderer of the girl Tae Jung is accused of killing. He is reckless and revels in the sick power yielded by Yo Han. But he soon learns that Yo Han sees him as nothing but an expendable resource.
3 things i loved about ‘The Manipulated’
1.
Multiple “Chapters”:
The “Squid Games” style racing scenes in this drama were certainly unexpected, and really could have been a full drama on their own. But I loved the way this series moved through several time lines and locations. It moves from Tae Jung’s original life, to time in prison, to the races, and finally ends with the revenge plan. This kept things interesting and fresh while the drama focused on character development without having to slow the pace.
2.
No Yong Sik:
No Yong Sik is a standout character in this drama. While characters like Yo Han, Do Gyeong, and the other sleezy clients represent pure, unadulterated evil, and Tae Jong represents a hopeful innocence, Yong Sik is a more balanced character. He has made mistakes, but his heart and motives remain pure. It is easy to identify with him as the voice of humanity and reason.
3.
Powerful Leads:
I really enjoyed the interactions in this drama between Tae Jung and Yo Han. While the plot may waver at times, the leads carry the weight of the story and kept me invested. I feel like their chemistry is the glue that held this series together and they both had stand-out performances.
3 things i didn’t love about ‘The Manipulated’
1.
Girlfriend:
I felt like we had too much backstory into Tae Jung’s relationship with his girlfriend for her to just leave him in the second episode and never be seen or heard from again. Sure, we needed to see what he lost, but a brief mention of a serious girlfriend should have been enough, in my opinion.
2.
Nanny:
So what exactly happened to the twisted, blind nanny at the end of this drama? She just disappears without any explanation after we find out that she was actually Yo Han’s mother. She felt too important to Yo Han’s story for her to just leave him and vanish.
3.
Moral Dilemma:
Throughout this drama, we watch Tae Jung resist the urge to become like the monsters he is chasing. So it was fitting to have his final showdown with Yo Han force him to make another moral choice. But honestly, after the extreme amounts of violence and bloodshed up until now, this final moment felt less emotional than it may have otherwise been. I mean, Tae Jung just took out an army of thugs with a nail gun. It isn’t that he revels in violence like Yo Han, but he has already proven that he will do what it takes to defend himself.
The Conclusion of 'The Manipulated'
The Ending
‘The Manipulated’ gives us a surprisingly happy ending with just a slight nod at an open ending. Tae Jung and Yo Han have their final showdown, and although Yo Han begs Tae Jung to just kill him, Tae Jung leaves Yo Han after pinning him to his giant screen with a well placed sword. Later the news reports that Yo Han died in a fire that destroyed his whole building. They also report the truth about his crimes and the evil he did.
With Yo Han finally exposed, Tae Jung is cleared of all charges. Six month later, Tae Jun has opened his garden cafe, and Yong Sik and Eun Bi are both working for him. Tae Jung seems at peace, doing the things he loves again. He hosts a dinner where he is surrounded by his friends and found family. Even Officer Yang stops by to congratulate him.
A slight nod to a possible second season is shown in the final scene, as the camera cuts away from the party to take us across the city where someone is sitting in Yo Han’s chair in front of the big screen. We never see the person’s face, but it definitely looks like it could be Yo Han. There is currently no report of a second season, but the possiblity is there.
My Personal Thoughts and Ratings
‘The Manipulated’ is an exciting, gritty crime revenge drama. The cinematography is slick and intense and the all-star cast give impressive performances. Ji Chang Wook shines in this action-heavy role and Do Kyung Soo makes a chilling villain. The story and its characters are complex and intriguing. The action scenes are well-done and the revenge story has you rooting for the lead all the way to the end.
But the plot is pretty far-fetched at times and the drama as a whole is raw and violent. If you aren’t a fan of darker dramas, this one is probably not a good choice for you. There is a random plot line in the middle that some felt interrupted the flow of the overall story. But, if you want a big budget, high-intensity action drama, this one is thrilling and satisfying. I give ‘The Manipulated’ a 9 out of 10 ramen.
