The Story
A powerful shaman and a government officer who has been possessed by an imoogi spirit team up to investigate the unusual ghostly incidents at the palace. And as they each bring their own special powers together to try to identify the vengeful spirit who has set his sights on the royal family, the pair will gain new insight into each other. Suddenly the spirit the shaman had always assumed was her arch-nemesis becomes someone she will be forced to rely on if they are going to free the King and his family from a generations-old curse.
“Now, do you understand? No human can win against a deity.” – Gang Cheol
Meeting the stars: Yook Sung Jae and Bo Na
Yook Sung Jae as Yun Gap/Gang Cheol
Gang Cheol is an imoogi spirit who prepared for 1000 years to rise up into the heavens and become a dragon. But his efforts are thwarted when he is seen by an infant, and therefore he is sent back to earth. Now his only chance to ascend is to get the support of a pure soul like Yeo Ri. So, for the last 13 years he has done everything in his power to make her miserable enough to want to help get rid of him. So when Yeo Ri’s first love is suddenly killed by assassins, Gang Cheol possesses his body as a way to stay by Yeo Ri’s side.
When Yeo Ri and Gang Cheol arrive at the palace at the King’s request, they find a vengeful spirit, known as the Colossal Shadow or the Eight Foot Spirit, has been wreaking havok on the royal family. It is going to take the power of a shaman and a water god combined to set things right. And even then it could end up costly Gang Cheol his life.
Living life as a human requires some serious adapting for Gang Cheol, which leads to some cute bits of humor. And as he discovers the human wonders of hunger and physical weaknesses, he also discovers the beauty of love. I love Yook Sung Jae. It’s been 3 years since he has had a drama role and I loved having him back on the small screen. I liked how he got to play the serious palace official and the sinister yet somehow innocent evil spirit in one role.
Bo Na as Yeo Ri
Yeo Ri is the granddaughter of a famous shaman. But after her grandmother is killed while performing a ceremony, Yeo Ri separates herself from the title by working as a glass worker. But no matter how much she tries to escape her destiny, Gang Cheol is constantly there to remind her. When her first love, Yun Gap shows up to ask her to come and make a pair of glasses for the King, Yeo Ri is excited, not just to meet the King but to travel with Yun Gap.
Unfortunately Gap ends up dead and possessed by Gang Cheol. And to make matters worse, when she arrives, she finds out she was deceived by Gap. The King doesn’t actually need her glass working skills but her shamanic powers. But Yeo Ri can’t ignore a request from the King. So she works with Gang Cheol to solve the mystery of what ghost has targeted the royal family. And along the way, she finds herself falling for the spirit she once considered just an obnoxious arch-nemesis. Now they will need to find a way to defeat the spirit and try to both make it out of the fight alive.
Yeo Ri is brave and independent. She loved her grandmother, and her loss hit Yeo Ri very hard. But the skills and traditions that her grandmother handed down to her are very much a part of Yeo Ri’s life. And between the memory of her grandmother and the pesky annoyance of Gang Cheol, Yeo Ri can never really forget who and what she is. I like Bo Ra and I thought she did well in this role, but the character was a bit underwhelming for me.
Supporting characters
Kim Ji Hoon as King Yi Seong
Yi Seong is a forward-thinking King who hopes to make reforms to things like slavery and promote equality among his people. But his fear of the Colossal Shadow that is haunting the palace has put him on edge and made him worry about the safety of his family.
Kim Sang Ho as Pung San
Pung San is a blind shaman who serves Palcheok-gwi, the Eight Foot Spirit. Pung San uses his body to channel the spirit’s energy and act as its vessel. Pung San has been working with the Queen Dowager to try to put her own blood line on the throne.
Han Soo Yeon as Queen Dowager
The Queen Dowager has spent her life trying to make sure her own son become the King in place of Yi Seong or his descendents. She teams up with Pung San to use dark magic as a way to protect her own son while causing danger to the King’s direct line.
3 things i loved about ‘The Haunted Palace’
1.
Kim Ji Hoon:
For me, Kim Ji Hoon was the highlight of this drama. His portrayal of the King was refreshingly human while still coming off as a competent and admirable leader. His love for his wife, his son, and even his close friend Gap, were well-written and touching.
2.
Gang Cheol and Gap’s Mom:
I really enjoyed the sweet interactions we had between Gang Cheol and Gap’s mother. Her devotion to him, both when she didn’t know who he really was, and later on when she did, taught Gang Cheol a valuable lesson about being human.
3.
Palace Ghosts:
I thought the palace ghosts Yeo Ri met and helped along the way were a nice touch to this drama. I particularly liked the young “night light ghost”. Their stories allowed us to meet different kinds of spirits and have some fun along the way.
3 things i didn’t love about ‘THe Haunted Palace’
1.
Black Goo:
I didn’t find the ghosts in this drama particularly scary, but if I have to see one more person throwing up black, disgusting goo, I just might scream. This was just a little gross, and once would have been fine, but it just kept happening over and over again. That was enough for me!
2.
Bi Bi:
I really enjoyed Bi Bi’s character and the idea of Gang Cheol having a brother. So I was disappointed that his character kind of flitted in and out of the story without much purpose until his tragic death. It seems like there could have been much more to his story than that.
3.
The Monk:
It seemed like the older monks were going to play some pivotal part in helping Yeo Ri and Gang Cheol defeat the Eight Foot Spirit. But in the end, all they really seemed to do is eat taffy and offer depressing advice. Again, I wish they had done more with these characters.
The Conclusion of 'The Haunted Palace'
The Ending
‘The Haunted Palace’ has a happy ending for our lead couple and ties up the loose ends well. They defeat the Colossal Shadow after a hard-fought spiritual battle. And to resolve the issue, Yeo Ri and the King perform a touching appeasement ritual where the King takes responsibility for the actions of his ancestors and apologizes to the people of Palcheok-gwi’s village.
Unfortunately the fate of our King and Queen is not so happy, as the Queen is killed by the Eight Foot Spirit. And at first it seems like Gang Cheol may be joining her in death. But after days waiting for him to wake up, he finally comes back to life when they try to put the lid on his coffin. He tells them that the Jade Emperor gave him a choice to ascend as a dragon or stay as a human. And guess what? He chose to stay!
As a follow up, we see that the King is moving forward on his country reforms, with the help of Lord Choi. Pung San is struck by lightning trying to escape the capital, dying the painful death Gang Cheol had predicted. And a few years down the road, we see Yeo Ri and Gang Cheol living as a happily married couple and raising a precocious daughter who obviously takes after both her parents. This brings Yeo Ri’s vision from the first episode full circle. And Yeo Ri and Gang Cheol still answer the King’s call when he needs help, but not before Gang Cheol haggles over wages.
My Personal Thoughts and Ratings
‘The Haunted Palace’ is a supernatural historical drama full of spooky curses and palace intrigue. The ghostly mystery is engaging and the themes of acceptance, revenge and atonement are thought-provoking without seeming preachy. Kim Ji Hoon is fabulous as the wise yet remarkably human King.
Unfortunately, the story does lag a bit in the middle. The ghostly elements can be a little too intense if you don’t like this style of drama. And the lead couple lacked a bit of chemistry. But I enjoyed the supernatural mystery and the strong moral themes. I give ‘The Haunted Palace’ an 8 out of 10.
