Plot Overview of 'Oasis'
'Oasis': A Story of Love, Friendship, and Loyalty
In the 1980’s, two teenage boys meet the spunky daughter of a local theater owner and they develop a close bond. And as the trio spend time together, both boys fall for their new friend. But a horrible accident rocks their friendship, changing their lives forever. Four years later the friends are reunited, but life has taken each on a very different path that will pit a prosecutor against an infamous gang leader. And lingering romantic feelings will heat up as old rivalries become adult battles.
Meet the leads
Jang Dong Yoon as Lee Du Hak
Lee Du Hak grew up as the son of a servant and farmer. His best friend Cheol Ung is the son of the rich family his father serves. One day they meet Jeong Sin and the trio become close friends. Although they both like her, Jeong Sin chooses Du Hak. But when Cheol Ung accidentally kills a young man in a fight, Du Hak’s father insists that Du Hak take the blame. So Du Hak is forced to break up with Joeng Sin and spends 4 years in prison.
After being released, Du Hak uses his prison connections to start a gang and becomes an infamous leader. But when he meets Jeong Sin and Cheol Ung again he finds that his old friend is now on the opposite side of the law, as he studies to be a prosecutor. And although he broke up with her, Jeong Sin is still in love with him and doesn’t carry what his occupation is. And as their tangled rivalry begins to unravel, secrets will be revealed and jealousy will threaten to tear them apart.
Lee Du Hak is bright and loyal. But the unrealistic expectations of his father and the way his supposed best friend takes advantage leaves him broken and bitter, with a prison record that will follow him for the rest of his life. I love Jang Dong Yoon and I think this character plays well to his strengths. He has a talent for balancing humor and emotion well and he really made you feel the injustice of Du Hak’s life.
Seol In Ah as O Jeong Sin
O Jeong Sin is the feisty daughter of a local theater owner. She meets Du Hak and Cheol Ung when they try to sneak in the back door of her father’s theater and the three become fast friends. Both boys express a romantic interest. And although Cheol Ung seems to have everything, it is Du Hak’s sincere humility that wins her heart. But just when she confesses her feelings and they start dating, Du Hak is sent to prison for murder.
Du Hak breaks things off with her while he is in prison. Thankfully, she is able to stay in touch with Cheol Ung, who is still in love with her. But even after 4 years, Jeong Sin hasn’t gotten over Du Hak . And when Du Hak shows up again, she takes him back, regardless of his dangerous gang ties. But Cheol Ung refuses to accept defeat and begins a vicious battle to break them apart at any cost, undeterred by past loyalty or debts. And Jeong Sin will risk everything to find her Hollywood ending.
Jeong Sin is a confident, free-thinker who insists on living life her way. Her character represents the cultural shift at the time, to embrace modern ideas and attitudes. She is the perfect foil for Cheol Ung’s, mother who risks everything to keep the corrupt status quo. I loved Seol In Ah in this role. She has a bright personality that helps her carry this kind of character well.
Secondary Characters in 'Oasis'
Exploring the Supporting Cast
Choo Young Woo as Choi Cheol Ung
Choi Cheol Ung is Du Hak’s best friend when they are younger. But his refusal to take responsiblity for his own mistakes puts Du Hak in prison and ruins any future he may have had. He met Jeong Sin at the same time as Du Hak and he liked her from the beginning, but Jeong Sin was always interested in Du Hak. He eventually becomes a prosecutor and is determined to arrest his old friend and break him and Jeong Sin up for good.
Kang Kyung Hun as Kang Yeo Jin
Kang Yeo Jin is Cheol Ung’s mother. She is greedy and conniving and her whole life becomes a string of lies and deceptions. Both of her husbands have catered to her disillusions and her obsession to make her son everything she couldn’t be. But as her secrets begin coming to light, everything she worked so hard to build will crumble.
Jin Yi Han as O Man Ok
O Man Ok is Hwang Chung Seong’s right hand man although he also does Cheol Ung’s mothers’ dirty work when she needs him. His work has caused him to commit countless crimes over the years in the name of national security and loyalty to his employer. But along the way, he has lost all sight of who he is or what he wants for his own life.
Highlights of 'Oasis'
What I Loved About the Drama
Gang Brotherhood
I enjoyed the interactions between Du Hak and his gang members. Their brotherhood was fun to watch. And I loved that although Du Hak felt forced to do illegal things to get by, he always tried to help his guys do the right thing and gain the self respect society had taken from them. I also liked the “assists” from the real estate fraud team. Their comic relief was fun!
Jeong Sin
One of my favorite things about this drama was Jeong Sin’s unwavering love and loyalty for Du Hak. If she had wavered any of the times that she thought she lost Du Hak forever, it would have made Cheol Ung’s feeling more understandable and cheapened her relationship with Du Hak. But instead, she remained true to him, with unquestioning belief in him as a person and their potential future.
Du Hak's Mom
I was so happy that in the end Du Hak’s mom got both her sons back. She never agreed to giving Cheol Ung to Yeo Jin and she had spent her whole life having to love her second son from the sidelines. She deserved some kind of happiness at the end of it all. And her ending is especially satisfying when compared to Yeo Jin, who is left with empty dreams and her own disillusionment.
critiques of 'Oasis'
Weakest Points of the Drama
Du Hak's dad and Cheol Ung's Mom
As a pair, Du Hak’s dad and Cheol Ung’s mom have to be one of the worst parent duos I have ever seen. Du Hak’s father’s insistence in living as if he is still a slave was infuriating. And the sacrifices he forced upon his family were cruel and unforgivable. And Cheol Ung’s mom’s belief that nothing mattered more than her son’s success made me want to scream.
Cheol Ung's Change of Heart
I love a good redemption story and I was happy to see Cheol Ung come around in the end. But his character was so inconsistent throughout the whole drama. He would change so much from one situation to the next without any real explanation. And for him to sit side by side with Jeong Sin and Du Hak at the end and pretend it was all fine felt strangely insincere.
O Man Ok
I know O Man Ok is a villain with absolutely no justification for his actions. But even so, I felt kind of sad when he got killed off. First of all, that it would be done by his mentor Chung Seong as he looked him coldly in the eye. But also, it felt like his character got dragged into a situation he couldn’t break free from. And just when it seemed like he might be able to change the direction of his tragic life, he gets offed. I couldn’t help but feel for him.
Conclusion of 'Oasis'
Unraveling the Ending
‘Oasis’ gives us our happy Hollywood ending for our leads. But it’s a bumpy road. A grand showdown brings all the secrets to light. Cheol Ung and Du Hak find out they are really brothers, and in the face of immenent danger, Cheol Ung chooses to protect he and Du Hak’s birth mom before rushing to Du Hak’s side after he is shot. The scene ends with Du Hak losing consciousness while his friends cry at his side.
So where does that leave us? In the aftermath, Chung Seong is hospitalized and chooses to jump out of the hospital window rather than be arrested for his crimes. Having lost everything, Yeo Jin is living in her own reality at a psychiatric hospital. We see a newspaper that runs a story saying Du Hak has been cleared of all charges.
Outside Jeong Sin’s theater, the boys’ mom waits as the authorities arrive and she begs them to give him a little time. Though it isn’t directly stated, we have to assume they are there to arrest Cheol Ung, since Du Hak has been proven innocent of his alleged crimes. Inside the three friends sit side by side like old times. The boys bicker and Jeong Sin scolds them to try to get along.
Personal Reflections and Rating
Final Thoughts and Overall Rating
‘Oasis’ is a historical romantic drama about fated love and enduring friendships. 1980’s and 90’s dramas have become popular lately, and this one does a nice job of capturing the political unrest of the time. There is a gritty, noir feel that fits well with the themes. There is some action, some romance, and plenty of emotional moments. And the injustice suffered by the leads is touchingly gut-wrenching.
But unlike similar dramas like “Youth of May’ or ‘Snowdrop, this drama chooses the tropes of melodrama and birth secrets over any fresh perspective. At times, the heavy emotions overshadow the gritty politics and action, turning the historical drama into more of a timeless melodrama. And the choices by some of the characters are likely to make you want to throw things at the screen. Be warned! But I enjoyed the drama for its engaging story and characters, and I do love a good emotional rollercoaster. I give ‘Oasis’ a 7 out of 10 ramen.
