The Story

A desperate man with a gambling debt hires someone to kill his father so he can use his father’s life insurance to pay off loan sharks. But his actions set off a string of events that connect six random strangers in a tangled web of deceit and murder.  And one woman finds herself with a chance to get revenge for a past trauma that has haunted her her whole life. But nothing is as it seems and no one can be trusted in this dangerous game of life and death.

'Karma' is a twisted tale of violence and revenge.

Meeting the stars: Park Hae Soo and Shin Min Ah

Park Hae Soo as "Eyewitness"

“Eyewitness” is a con artist who makes a living lying and taking advantage of others. He met Jang Gil Ryeong in prison, and when Gil Ryoeng’s initial murder attempt gets complicated he asks “Eyewitness” for help. “Eyewitness” help commit the crime and then disguises himself as an innocent bystander. Later he kills “Debtor” by setting an old building on fire with him inside.

But “Eyewitness” is also burned in the fire.  When he wakes up in the hospital and realizes he has been burned beyond recognition, he claims to be “Debtor” in the hopes of claiming the father’s life insurance. Unfortunately, he finds out the man’s father changed his will shortly before his death. Not only that, but he also learns the nurse caring for him has a vendetta against “Debtor” that he is going to have to deal with. Now he just hopes to get out of this identity alive.

“Eyewitness” is quick thinking and adept at all kinds of deceit. His only concern is making his next buck. Even when his old high school friend, Yu Jeong, is killed, he is unaffected.  Park Hae Soo is particularly good in this kind of cold, calculating role. And he is charmingly humble when he needs to be. I thought he was perfect as this character.

Shin Min Ah as Lee Ju Yeon

Lee Ju Yeon is a nurse with a successful career and a committed boyfriend. But inside she bears the scars of a traumatic sexual attack from her high school days. Since that time, she has dreamed of taking revenge on the group of guys responsible, particularly the ring leader who planned it all.

So she is shocked when she hears that the burn victim newly admitted to her unit has the same name as the man she has hoped to punish. And when she confirms that he is the same guy, she begins plotting her revenge. But when her boyfriend figures out what she is thinking, he steps in to try to stop her. Now that the opportunity has presented itself, she will have to decide how far she is actually willing to go.

Lee Ju Yeon seems stable and well-adjusted.  But her unresolved pain has left her unable to move on from the trauma of her past.   Shin Min Ah is a skilled actress with an ability to take on diverse characters. I thought she played this part well and portrayed her struggle between morality and revenge convincingly.

Supporting characters

Lee Hee Joon as "Debtor"

“Debtor” is the man who sets this whole chain of events in place. He is a habitual gambler who has gotten in over his head with dangerous loan sharks. And he feels absolutely no guilt when he hires someone to kill his father for his life insurance.

Gong Seung Yeon as Lee Yu Jeong

Lee Yu Jeong is a con woman. She is also the one who helped set up Ju Yeon’s attack. She has been dating “Glasses” because he is a wealthy doctor who is willing to spoil her. She also grew up with “Eyewitness”, and she helps him finish the job with “Debtor’s” father.

Lee Kwang Soo as "Glasses"

Glasses is a greedy and selfish doctor. He is dating Yu Jeong and thinks she is the one for him. Little does he know, she has been using him all along. He is the one who hits “Debtor’s” father with his car. But rather than report it to the police, he pays “Eyewitness” to help him bury the body in the mountains.

A Comprehensive Look at Karma 2025

3 things i loved about ‘Karma’

1.

Choices:

This is not a drama about redemption or even satisfying revenge. Instead, it is a story about human nature, the choices we make, and the consequences of those choices. It is a web of seemingly unrelated events, drawn together by the unlikely string of fate.

2.

Cast:

This drama is a parade of well-known actors and star-studded cameos. And each one hits their mark. With this strong of a cast, I suspect the writing and directing was relatively easy. I enjoyed all the familiar faces and obvious talent.

3.

Red Herrings:

By the end of this drama, I couldn’t help suspecting every character of some hidden evil. I was sure something was up with the nun who got all the insurance money. And I wondered if Ju Yeon’s boyfriend had been one of her masked attackers. Little did I know, his evil was much more twisted than I expected!

3 things i didn’t love about ‘Karma

1.

Violent:

This drama is so extremely violent, that it almost borders on a dark humor at times.  I saw several people who said they found themselves laughing, even though they felt like they shouldn’t. I think they may have been better served to tone it down just a bit.

2.

The Dead “Debtor”:

I love the twist to Ju Yeon’s revenge; that she shows mercy to the wrong guy and walks away with a clear conscience. But I feel like her character deserved to know that the man who did that to her actually did receive his karma from a higher power than her.

3.

Character Development:

Six episodes is definitely a fast paced drama, and most of the six “main” characters don’t even live that long. But it would have been nice to get a bit more character development from a few of the characters. Even if the stories were told after they were dead, in relation to those still living.

The Conclusion of 'Karma'

The Ending

‘Karma’ ends as it should, with everyone getting what they deserved; some more than others. By the end, 4 of our 6 strangers are dead. Only “Eyewitness” and Ju Yeon remain. And when the pair come face to face, Ju Yeon is determined to kill him. But, in the heat of the moment, Ju Yeon realizes that killing him would only ruin her own life.

“Eyewitness” breathes a sigh of relief, thinking that he is now scot free. But he has a surprise, when the loan sharks, still thinking he is “Debtor”, show up to claim his organs. And in one of the most satisfying twists of the whole series, Ju Yeon’s boyfriend, Jeong Min, is the doctor doing the organ “transplants” for the gangsters. “Eyewitness” wakes up just in time to meet Jeong Min and the doctor smugly tells him that while he usually uses anesthetic, tonight he will not.

The private detective shows up at the hospital to tell Ju Yeon that “Eyewitness” isn’t actually the man who attacked her. But seeing that she seems to have made her peace, he leaves and throws the DNA results in the garbage. Jeong Min opens his parting gift from his gangster boss and finds the rolex watch that has traded “wrists” throughout the drama. The final scene shows Ju Yeon leaving the hospital. She pauses to watch the snow and then continues with a strong, confident stride that signals healing and happiness for her, now that she can start to put the past behind her.

My Personal Thoughts and Ratings

‘Karma’ is a dark thriller that revolves around a group of dangerous strangers who are only interested in getting rich and staying alive. The short 6 episode format makes the drama easily bingeable. The writing is tight and the pacing is steady and consistent. I loved the way this drama was able to weave such a complex set of characters together in unexpected ways. Each twist and turn pulls the web of fate tighter in a truly satifying way.

Like many thrillers of this kind, it won’t be for everyone. It is violent and bloody simply for violence’s sake. Don’t expect any of these characters to show a shred of human decency or morality. They are bad people doing terrible things. I think I would have liked a little more time to get to know some of the characters. But for me, I thoroughly enjoyed the great writing and the cast is outstanding. I give ‘Karma’ an 8 out of 10.
