Genre: Fantasy Romance

Starring: Kim Hye Ja and Son Suk Ku

The Story

Upon her death, a woman is thrilled to find out she will be reunited with her deceased husband in Heaven. But Heaven does not end up being the rosy paradise she has always envisioned. First, while she kept her body in its true age, her husband chose to live as a 30 year old. And while she is still reeling from their awkward age difference, she finds that her fiery temper and confrontational attitdude could still send her to hell if she isn’t careful. And as the couple wrestle with unresolved pain from their time on earth, they will slowly begin to find healing.

Meeting the stars: Kim Hye Ja and Son Suk Ku

Kim Hye Ja as Lee Hae Suk

Lee Hae Suk is thrilled when she arrives in Heaven and is told she can reunite with her husband. But Heaven is not the perfect paradise she had imagined. Her husband appears in a body almost 50 years younger than hers, she gets so many demerits that she is required to attend a church service with a fussy pastor as the only member, and a beautiful stranger appears whose only memory is Hae Suk’s husband’s name. But as she adjusts to her new surroundings, she learns that there are no coincidences in Heaven and many of the people she meets have some connection to her past.

Lee Hae Suk is quick thinking and sharp tongued. She spent years as a debt collector, being abused both physically and emotionally by angry clients. But Heaven is a place for letting go of our anger and frustration and finding healing. It isn’t always easy or fun, but the outcome is true peace. Kim Hye Ja is a wonderful actress with a long list of successful roles. But it was great to see her play this character with all the spunk of a woman who has lived a long and fulfilling life. She was perfect in the part and I loved watching her.

Son Suk Ku as Ko Nak Jun

Ko Nak Jun lived a tragic life before dying ahead of his wife. So, while in Heaven, he anxiously waited for her to join him. But he is surprised that when she does, she is still in her 80 year old body, while he is in his 30’s. But being with her is all he really cares about.

Nak Jun is shocked when a young woman he saved from being pulled out of the train in Hell shows up at their house. His name is her only memory, but Nak Jun soon realizes her true identity. She is a fractured piece of Hae Suk that occurred after the disappearance of their son. And he will sacrifice whatever it takes to help Hae Suk find healing and become whole again.

Ko Nak Jun is a dedicated husband and a kindhearted person. He spent his life trying to protect his wife, but he feels like he has caused her more pain than comfort. So he hopes that now, as he encourages her along the road to healing, he can finally do something worthwhile to help make her life better. I always love Son Suk Ku and this was such a cute, lighthearted role compared to his usual characters. I enjoyed him in this role and I loved the sweet chemistry he had with Kim Hye Ja.

Supporting characters

Han Ji Min as Som I

Som I is a mysterious stranger who shows up with no memory of anything except Nak Jun’s name. She spends her days with Nak Jun hoping it will help her regain her memories. But she soon learns that she isn’t actually a person at all, but simply a splintered piece of Hae Suk’s trauma.

Eventually, Hae Suk sends her back to the land of the living, agreeing to wait for her until her time.

The Director is a “godlike” character who runs Heaven. His job is to be the face and image of Heaven as he meets new residents and cares for those who are already there.  His twin brother is King Yeomra, the overseer of Hell.

3 things i loved about ‘Heavenly Ever After’

1.

Leads:

I have so much respect for Kim Hye Ja and Son Suk Ku. They definitely saved this drama in its weakest parts. I thought their chemistry was so touching, and I am impressed that they quickly made me stop noticing the age difference. Their natural interactions were convincing and genuine. And at almost 84 years old, Kim Hye Ja is still a Queen at the top of her game!!

2.

That Epilogue:

Wow! The epilogue at the end of this drama may very well be one of the best scenes in the whole series. The scene is filmed as a love letter from an actress at the end of a successful career and may very well serve some day as her final message to her fans. If, like Hae Suk, Kim Hye Ja dreamed of being an actress who lived many lives, I think she succeeded. Please give that woman her award!

3.

World Building:

This drama managed to establish a fairly extensive and complicated world of Heaven and Hell in 12 short episodes. I enjoyed the thought they put into building their own mythology of Heaven, life, and reincarnation. While drawing on several different religious influences, in the end they created a Heaven that was truly unique.

3 things i didn’t love about ‘Heavenly Ever After’

1.

Pets:

While I loved that this drama included the concept of a rainbow bridge, I found many of the pets to people scenes a bit cringey. Even as an animal lover, I couldn’t muster much interest in the pet stories they created. And I’m not sure what the purpose of Sonya was. The actress looked great in the part, but I don’t know what the point was.

2.

Som I:

The concept and reveal of Som I’s character was interesting, but I felt like her character was rushed and left me with a lot of questions. Why would a piece of Hae Suk get sent to Hell? Why did she seem so cheerful if she was trauma personified? And how did Nak Jun recognize her enough to save her from Hell, but then not figure it out when she was living under the same roof?

3.

Ending:

So, of course I was happy that in the end Hae Suk and Nak Jun were reunited again, for good this time. But it just seemed weird that Hae Suk lived a whole life surrounded by people who seemed to love and care for her. And in the end, she died and was like “See you! I’m getting back to my real husband.” I know they are soul mates, but I felt like the treatment of her “other” family felt harsh.

The Conclusion of 'Heavenly Ever After'

The Ending

‘Heavenly Ever After’ gives us a happy ending. But first, Hae Suk and Nak Jun agree to be reincarnated together. After finding out from the Center Director that they had been married 23 times in their lives, Nak Jun feels like he owes Hae Suk a happy life without him. So he walks her through the road to reincarnation but then tells her he doesn’t intend to go with her. Hae Suk is sad but agrees to honor his wishes after he disappears.

We see Nak Jun moping around Heaven as he waits for her to come back. And he finally seems to realize that they really were happy together. Years later, we see a much older Hae Suk on her death bed. As the family says their good byes, Nak Jun shows up to take her back “home”. And they agree that they never want to be separated again. The drama ends with an epilogue where Hae Suk is being interviewed for the documentary in Heaven. She says that she hopes to be reincarnated as an actress and to win an award. I hope she gets her wish.

My Personal Thoughts and Ratings

‘Heavenly Ever After’ is a fantasy romance drama about enduring love and healing. The couple’s story is touching and the leads are wonderful together. It’s great to see an older actress like Kim Hye Ja honored by being cast as a romantic lead. This drama provides one of the most interesting concepts of Heaven I have ever seen, and I appreciated this fresh approach.

But while there were elements I really loved, other parts of this drama were so quirky and weird that I just couldn’t settle into it. Also, the series starts as a sweet love story, but it tackles some dark and difficult topics in the second half without any real warning. So, don’t expect this to be a lighthearted rom-com. But I did love the journey of the leads and their heartwarming interactions. I give ‘Heavenly Ever After’ a 7 out of 10 ramen.
