The Story
A rookie lawyer starts her first job in the litigation department of Yoolim Law Firm. Her passionate naivete and social awkwardness immediately clash with her new supervisor, who is known for his cold and distant demeanor. But as she takes on her own cases and develops a mentor relationship with him, she will discover her own talents and skills as she navigates difficult cases and gray moral arguments.
Meeting the stars: Lee Jin Wook and Jung Chae Yeon
Lee Jin Wook as Yun Seok Hun
Yun Seok Hun is a partner at Yoolim. He is the team leader in the Litigation Department. His standoffish attitude has put him at odds with many of his peers and makes the new lawyers in his department a bit afraid of him. But as he offers them support and advice, his new team members slowly warm up to him.
In his personal life, Seok Hun is dealing with the scars of a failed marriage and the betrayal of a friend. And as he confronts difficult cases and moral questions, he will learn an important lesson about the meaning of love in its many forms. And that love, in some form, will creep into his relationship with Hyo Min.
Yun Seok Hun is known as a cold and logical attorney with a talent for finding creative arguments to win his cases. He becomes a mentor to Hyo Min and as they work together he finds healing from his painful past and learns to see the law in new and more compassionate ways. I enjoy Lee Jin Wook and I thought he played this logical, level-headed lawyer well.
Jung Chae Yeon as Kang Hyo Min
Kang Hyo Min comes from a family of prestigious lawyers. After getting a job at her fiance’s elite law firm, Hyo Min turns it down to work at Yoolim instead. And although many new attorneys avoid working in litigation because of Seok Hun’s “scary” reputation, Hyo Min confidently chooses to work there, so she can help those at the lowest place in their lives. As she works next to Seok Hun, Hyo Min develops romantic feelings for him, but their relationship is left unresolved in the end.
Hyo Min has a complicated family history. She is actually a twin, but her sister, Hyo Ju, was born hearing impaired. Since Hyo Min’s aunt also couldn’t hear, Hyo Min’s mother decided to send Hyo Ju to live with her. But breaking apart their family causes a rift that Hyo Min has never forgiven them for. And as she sees other difficult family situations in her cases, she gains new insight into her parents and how they may have made mistakes along the way, but they really did love both her and her sister.
Kang Hyo Min is empathetic and a good listener, and that helps her to pick up nuances in her clients stories that others may miss. She isn’t afraid to think outside the box when it comes to her cases and legal definitions. And her creative perspectives help her win some unlikely cases. It’s fun to see Jung Chae Yeon take on these more adult roles and she is really growing as an actress. I enjoyed the quiet, easy chemistry she shared with Lee Jin Wook in this drama.
Supporting characters
Lee Hak Joo as Lee Jin U
Lee Jin U is an associate attorney in the litigation department. He is close friends with Seok Hun and often acts as a mediator between him and the new attorneys on the team. He has a crush on his co-worker Min Jeong, even though she is older than him.
Jeon Hye Bin as Heo Min Jeong
Heo Min Jeong is a Senior Attorney in the litigation department. She has a long history with Seok Hun and works closely with him and Jin U. But her complicated personal history causes her to keep a distance at times.
Kang Sang Jun as Han Seong Chan
Han Seong Chan is a lawyer with Yoolim’s rival firm Lee & Seo. He and Hyo Min used to date and he had even proposed to her. But when she confessed that she had a sister with a disability, he started avoiding her and they broke up.
3 things i loved about ‘Beyond the Bar’
1.
Cases:
This drama did a nice job of creating unusual and morally difficult cases to present. Every case had an unusal nuance that made it different from other legal dramas I have seen. It gave lots of thought-provoking ideas with unusual perspectives. And that made the office/court time as engaging as the character development.
2.
Min Jeong:
Min Jeong was an interesting character. As a divorced woman who went back to become an older, non-traditional law student, she is definitely not the norm in Korean culture. Her story was unique and her romance with Jin U was sweet.
3.
Work/Personal Balance:
I liked the way this drama was able to make both the work scenes and the personal backstories balance. And how each law case wrapped back around to add elements to the character’s own personal journeys and life lessons.
3 things i didn’t love about ‘Beyond the Bar’
1.
Past Mistakes:
Hyo Min’s mother and Seok Hun’s ex-wife provided the perfect example of what it looks like when you put your own image and aspirations ahead of those you love. And I think their influence on Hyo Min and Seok Hun made them more aware of what can be lost when the wrong choices are made.
2.
Animal Cruelty:
Again, animal lover here, so maybe it’s just me. But that case about the man who purposefully tortured animals was hard to watch. Not that I don’t think the message was valuable to include in the drama. But I wanted to acknowledge that one made me feel a little ill as I watched it.
3.
Lead Romance?:
I don’t believe every drama has to have romance. But I do believe that if you present the idea and show that Hyo Min did have feelings, it would be nice to get some closure to that plot point. Leaving us hanging on the verge of either a confession or a kind rejection seems cruel. I do think they were hoping to set up a second season, but I would have liked to have at least a clue of what Seok Hun was thinking in those final moments.
The Conclusion of 'Beyond the Bar'
The Ending
Though the ending of ‘Beyond the Bar’ felt a bit unfinished and rushed at points, we did get some happy endings for our new friends. On the work side of things, Yoolim finally gets the house cleaning it has needed. They are able to get rid of some of the laziest and most corrupt at the firm under the new leadership of Na Yeon, with Seok Hun as her right hand.
Jin U plans a grand proposal and finally gets Min Jeong to accept it. And Hyo Ju finally goes home to visit her parents. She finds out her mom has not been as detached as she had seemed, even studying some sign language in case she ever had a chance to visit with Hyo Ju. Hyo Ju thanks them for sending her to her aunt, who truly loved her like a daughter. And the family take some steps toward a reconciliation.
Hyo Min and Seok Hun get set up on a blind date together through a matchmaking company. And although Seok Hun tries to cut the date short, Hyo Min talks him into staying. They spend a nice evening together and Hyo Min tells him that she has learned a lot about what real love is through their cases, as we get a fun montage of memories.
It is obvious that she is telling Seok Hun about her own feelings as well. And then she asks him what love means to him. As he leads into his thought on the subject, the drama cuts away and ends with the question unanswered. And now we just hope for a second season to see what he actually said.
My Personal Thoughts and Ratings
‘Beyond the Bar’ is a legal drama that explores complex cases and difficult moral questions. Their creative approach to each case is interesting and thought provoking. The cast is strong and the wide range of topics involved in their cases keep the show from becoming repetitive. The drama does a nice job of balancing the private lives of the lawyers with the cases they are trying, so that the character development flows naturally with the office elements.
The cases in this drama can feel heavy and complicated. Some people complained that certain cases felt overly exagerrated and unrealistic. Other fans didn’t like the open ending, although it seems to be setting up a much anticipated second season. But if you enjoy episodic legal dramas with deep character development, this one is extremely well done. I give ‘Beyond the Bar’ a 9 out of 10 ramen.
